Luquillo is known for its long, palm-lined public beach with calm, shallow water that’s popular for swimming, kayaking, and family outings. The town’s roadside “kioskos” offer a dense strip of casual eateries and bars, showcasing a wide range of Puerto Rican dishes. With nearby surf breaks and views toward offshore islands, it combines easy beach time with access to outdoor adventure.
With favorites like Las Pailas, Carabalí Rainforest Park, and Luquillo Beach, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Carabalí Bar & Grill and Wepa Arepa so you can get the best taste of Luquillo while you’re here. El Yunque National Forest, located on the northeast side of Puerto Rico, is a tropical rainforest and national reserve known for its rare trees and birds. It is the only rainforest in the United States National Forest System, covering 29,000 acres with peaks rising up to 3000 feet. Visitors can explore paved roads that provide access to hiking trails, picnic areas, and observation points like Yokahu Tower at an elevation of 1,575 feet.
Absolutely Beautiful Park. We drove from San Juan and the views getting here were good, but once we made it to the property we were blown away. There are tons of hiking trails some were unfortunately closed. Lots of people were here but the place is so big that for the most part we hardly saw anyone. Tons of wildlife and beautiful flowers. Overall even on a rainy day the is a must visit park!
Coach T — Google review
Uniquely beautiful. Even with construction it was peaceful, like taking a step back in time. Early in the day there are very few people and it is nice and cool. Accessible for disabled folks, many of the highlights are very close to the parking.
Beth F — Google review
It was our mistake for coming to this national forest so late (they close at 5pm) but wow. What an incredible place to walk around and walk into. It was a beautiful small hike to the waterfalls and it was just such a pretty view. Next time we come back, we are definitely coming earlier to spend more time here. Such a wonderful place.
Nina H — Google review
Great park!! Very well maintained and it's free to go in! We went to the tower and there was a beautiful view from it. You can drive through the park and stop at the areas you want to stop at. Great place to see the beautiful sceneries and the beautiful nature, and definitely recommend it.
David N — Google review
We went as soon as it opened. When we visited the park was free. The only fee that was collected was at the visitors center. To avoid the cruise ship tour buses go early. Head to the back of the park and work your way forward. I really enjoyed hiking in the rain. It’s a beautiful park. Sights for all ages and skill level. Parking and traffic does get tight as the day goes on.

Unforgettable Adventure in El Yunque National Forest I visited El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico, and it was truly one of the most breathtaking experiences I’ve ever had. The lush greenery, fresh air, and peaceful sounds of nature made it feel like stepping into another world. Whether you’re hiking to a waterfall, spotting tropical birds, or just soaking in the views. The trails were well maintained, and the entire park radiated a sense of calm and wonder. It’s a perfect escape for anyone who loves nature, adventure, or simply wants to recharge. I highly recommend making time for El Yunque it’s a gem that stays with you long after you leave.

The El Yunque Rainforest was so interesting with the weather changing by the minute. We hiked to Torre El Yunque and had sun, mist, rain, downpour, calm, wind, and even clouds all around us. The Visitor Center and Rangers were very nice and helpful. Plus, some beautiful waterfalls.

The rainforest is wonderful. Good for hiking. Some trails are challenged. Some places have no signs to tell the traveler about the trails details.

The Portal de El Yunque Visitor Center serves as the main entrance to the breathtaking El Yunque National Forest. It offers a wealth of information about the rainforest, including exhibits and an information desk. The center also features a shop where visitors can purchase souvenirs. The surrounding area, once heavily impacted by human activities such as logging and agriculture, has shown remarkable resilience in recovering from natural disturbances like hurricanes. Recently renovated at a cost of $18.
Be prepared for some rough driving conditions, winding narrow roads, aggressive drivers, and pedestrians all over. If you can get past that you will find some truly amazing landscapes and waterfalls to explore. If you want to see everything plan for 8+ hours. If you want to see a waterfall of two plan 3-4 hours. Wear comfortable hiking sandals if possible as there are some substantial hills to be climbed.
Joe D — Google review
El Yunque Visitor Center is a great starting point for exploring the rainforest! It’s lush and green, with beautiful views and helpful exhibits. It can get a bit crowded, so plan to go early. We grabbed our raincoats here before heading out — very convenient. A good place to get oriented before hitting the trails! We got all the information, maps we needed here. Restrooms were clean.
Ruchira K — Google review
Like nothing I have ever seen in my life. We checked out the visitor center which was very informative and they gave us the right information about how to get to the waterfall. Loved it.
Lauden C — Google review
Do not purchase visitor center tickets online. It's a scam. One can simply drive up to the gate and pay the forest ranger $8 per person. There's a short and lovely trail below the pedestrian bridge. I emersed myself in the beauty and sounds of nature. Drove maybe 9 minutes to Angelitos Trail. It's approx 40 min hike (stopping along the way to take pictures) to the Rio Mameyes. The water is cloudy from the sand but one can definitely take a dip so bring your bathing suit and towel.
Suzy — Google review
So happy this place was open even during the government shutdown. Bless all you workers. This place was so cool to visit.

Beautiful facility - rebuilt after the hurricane a few years ago. Good start to touring the rainforest.

When purchasing food at the restaurant. Checkout girl requested military id when showing America the beautiful veteran card. They need better training on government policies. Very unfriendly to veterans. El Yunque appears to be run by USDA.

It's a nice place but not worth $8/ person to see. You blink and you're done.

Carabalí Rainforest Park is a 600-acre ranch nestled in the lush tropical jungle between El Yunque National Rainforest and the Atlantic Ocean. It offers a variety of outdoor activities such as go-karting, horseback riding, zip-lining, mountain biking, and ATV tours. Visitors can explore the unique ecosystem of El Yunque National Forest, swim in the Mameyes River, or take horses to the beach.
ATV driving and Horseback riding was the highlight of our trip. It was a good activity to incorporate into our itinerary. The staff is very welcoming, friendly, and informational. They require you to arrive before your scheduled time to listen to instructions. We first did the horseback riding excursion for an hour. It contained an amazing view and a great pathway. I believe an hour is more than enough time. Our tour guide Alex was amazing! He gave us a laugh and provided us with things we should do for the rest of our time in PR. We then proceeded to the ATV area and were given even more instructions. It was slightly raining which in my opinion definitely made the ride better in the heat! We also did an hour which was a good amount of time to drive and take pictures! It was messy and muddy but we enjoyed it so much!

5-star experience! The Luquillo Beach Horse Ride with guide Ángel was incredible. Riding my beautiful horse Rescue through the forest, river, and beach was a dream. Ángel and the team were fantastic. I was also impressed by the exceptional care of the horses and the park's efficient operation. Highly recommend Carabalí Rainforest Adventure Park for an unforgettable horseback riding experience!

Horseback riding was fun. Horses are well trained, healthy, and stayed to course. Tour guides were awesome. ATVs was alright, I'd suggest doing the 2hr tour, it should be more exciting. The 1hr was to laxed for me. I like to have fun on the ATVs, this tour was so chill, we never even made it to speeds of 20 unless we fell back some. Our tour guide Jamidel was cool tho and the views at the stops were nice.

Did the UTV this morning for the first time and it was absolutely AMAZING!! Harry was the BEST tour guide (and photographer) He was very informative and you could tell he was so proud of his beautiful island Puerto Rico!! Really enjoyed the tour today and getting to experience the rainforest in another way that wasn’t hiking :) I would recommend this place to anybody visiting PR!!

Easy registration - 10 am horseback for 2 hours with a 6 year old that wasn’t having it. Ashley was freaking amazing talking him down getting him comfy and off we went. Tim and Carlito were friendly, helpful, attentive and knew the history of the neighborhood. Highly recommend!!

This tour was the best. We did the two hours with CARLOS. He was amazing very informative and safe guide. The scenery of this rainforest was nothing less of Amazing. It was nice to see the different type of animals, although same breeds as back home with some differences like the ball with the longhorn, enormous iguanas or salamander, etc.,

What an amazing day. We were on a UTV excursion led by Mark Anthony. He led us through some rough terrain to stop at some beautiful sites. We did the one hour excursion, I wish we would have signed up for the 2-hour trip. It was so much fun. We stopped at a river where we were able to go swimming. This place is packed with so many options. They have horseback riding, ATVs, and go karts. It was so much fun. The staff was great in explaining all the details. We will definitely do it again.

My kids and I did the 1 hour horseback ride in the rainforest and it was incredible! Gerald and Beba were absolute professionals, took excellent care of everyone - but especially the kiddos, took time to take several photos and videos, explain what we were seeing, taught us how to ride properly, and most importantly, shared this beautiful experience with us! I highly recommend this company. Afterwards we went to their gift shop, got snacks, and went go-carting on property. It was an absolute blast and we will be back to enjoy other experiences with them!

Located in Luquillo, near the El Yunque National Forest and just a short drive from San Juan, Las Paylas is a natural wonder that offers an exhilarating experience. The rushing waters of the Las Paylas River flow over smooth rocks, forming waterfalls and two natural water slides - one large and another smaller one downstream. Visitors can access the site by asking locals for directions or using GPS. A small fee allows parking in a resident's driveway, providing convenient access to the river.
This slice of heaven in the back yard of the citizens of Puerto Rico is kept clean and pristine. Its slide at yoir own risk, but the risks are minimum. Its so much fun to slide in mountain waters into a pool of fresh cool refreshing waters that are grounding and cleansing. There's a 30 foot slide & a 100ft slide. I didn't dare go down the 100 ft slide but it was fun watching thr locals slide down on their feet!

WE DROVE WITH NO GUIDES Today we visited Las Pailas Waterfall. The entrance is right off the side of the road, and it felt crowded as soon as we arrived. We paid $10 for parking and $1 per person to access the waterfall. The trail starts with a short concrete path, then you walk along the river for a few more minutes until you reach the first waterfall. There’s a second one just below. The waterfalls are beautiful, and the natural water slides are really fun! But honestly, the place was very crowded. There were a lot of tour groups, loud music, and people everywhere. It was not only a Sunday but also Father’s Day and a holiday weekend—so that probably made it even busier. Because of the noise and the crowd, it was hard to enjoy the peaceful side of nature. One more thing: the place doesn’t have much structure. There are no bathrooms, and no one really welcomes you or gives any kind of orientation. It’s just a house by the road with someone charging at the entrance. For the number of people going there, it definitely feels unprepared. Our tip: Avoid weekends and holidays. Try to go early and during the week for a more relaxed experience.
Andre S — Google review
A beautiful spot and worth a couple hours of your trip to visit. There are two "slides". One is a little more aggressive and rough. The lower one is way more gentle and ends in a pool of water that was refreshing to swim in. A little bit of a current in the pool, so keep an eye on little ones and weaker swimmers - it's very deep in the middle.
Lauren J — Google review
We had a great time here! Lots of tour groups coming in and out so if you go on your own you kind of feel like you need to get out of their way/get your slide down in between groups. We were a bit scared of the parking situation but it turned out fine - they do ask you to park on a literal cliff though so be aware of that. Including some pictures of the place to park/area because that was what threw us off the most and hopefully we can help others find it. Quick but steep walk down, good shoes are a must if you plan to scramble the rocks to slide down.

Awesome place for a splash. A couple of water rides. Not too long walk from the ride stop. The walk could be challenge if wet.

Wonderful place to visit!! My family had a great time. Remember to bring socks so you won’t fall going up to get to the top of the natural slide. Barefoot, Crocks, and other type of shoes are slippery. Be careful! We paid $10 per car + $1 per person (bring cash!). Definitely recommend.

Luquillo Beach is a well-known and popular destination in Puerto Rico, featuring palm-lined sandy shores, food stalls, restrooms, and shallow areas for swimming. It is one of the most famous beaches in the area and is often depicted on postcards. The beach offers a great vibe with numerous kiosks offering a variety of food options and souvenir shops. While it can get crowded during weekends, it's still possible to find a spot on this large public beach.
I had the most amazing time at the beach! The sun was shining bright all day, and the clear blue water looked like something straight out of a dream. The atmosphere was pure paradise — vibrant, relaxing, and full of good energy. The drinks were incredibly good and surprisingly cheap, which made everything even better. Whether you were just lounging in the sand or dipping in the ocean, it felt like the perfect getaway. Jet skis were available for rent, adding a fun, adventurous touch to the day. The thrill of speeding across the water with that view was unforgettable. It was the kind of place that makes you forget all your worries and just live in the moment. I genuinely could see myself living there every single day. The peaceful vibe, amazing weather, and fun activities created an experience that I’ll be dreaming about for a long time. Highly recommend this beach to anyone looking for a little slice of heaven!

Absolutely beautiful beach for everyone!! This is a great place for tourists to visit, with enticingly smooth sands, wash off areas, passing business, and warm waters where you may discover sea creatures like I did!

Such a beautiful and wonderful beach. Easy for families, no huge waves, soft sand, lots of space, and not very crowded.

Beautiful beach with very nice vendors. All of the people that we met were very friendly! It’s a great place to spend with your family take lots of pictures. We did a jet ski tour, which was such a blast! The area was relatively clean but there was a little bit of trash and I saw a piece of glass out there on the grounds. According to one of my friends, If you need to use the restroom, apparently one of them you have to pay for and the other one is dirty. You’ll definitely see lizards!
Clarke E — Google review
Nice beach, it has a big extension of sand, warm water. If you dont a beach umbrella or chairs you can rent them there. If you don't want to carry your cooler, there are different choices of food at the food trucks or kiosks. You have to pay $4 to access the parking lot
Christian S — Google review
We visited Luquillo Beach on a Sunday, so as you can imagine there were a good number of people on the beach. Getting the umbrella and sun bed rental was a little busier than usual because of this. There was somewhat of a line, and we had to wait until some chairs were returned - but this didn’t take much longer than 10-15 mins. I would encourage anyone hoping to visit over the weekend to get there earlier, to make sure that you have less of a wait if you’d like to rent sun loungers. The beach is extremely clean, and is along a beautiful stretch so that you can walk along the sand for a long while in each direction.
Tania W — Google review
I loved this beach. The water is gorgeous, and there are umbrellas and chairs available for rent. The umbrella/chair guys are true professionals. 😁 We ate at kiosko #20, El Terruño. The grouper ceviche was fresh and tasty. I also had the cool opportunity to see a sun halo rainbow, which they said happens once in a while.

Carabalí Bar & Grill is a fantastic dining spot nestled in beautiful surroundings. The food and drinks are top-notch, with generous portions and refreshing cocktails. The grilled salmon and seafood mix are particularly outstanding, surpassing even the best dishes from other regions. The staff is attentive and accommodating, adding to the overall enjoyable experience. Despite being a bit crowded at times, this restaurant offers delicious meals, great drinks, and nearby attractions for an all-around memorable visit while in Puerto Rico.
We had a wonderful experience at Carabali tonight. Tamara was our waitress and she was so delightful. She gave us amazing recommendations for dinner. She also explained the different drinks. We absolutely loved her! The food and drinks were phenomenal. We all had some sort of skirt steak dish. I had the skirt steak with the added shrimp. Outstanding!

This place is filled with a variety of different things to do. I visited Carabalí before but never did I eat at the Bar & Grill. Our waitress was amazing and sweet. She did a fantastic job. The place is nice…there’s a big screen TV and you can see the cooks in the kitchen. Everything was nice and clean including the bathroom. The food however was a different story. The bacalaitos were burnt and the mofongo was not good. I was a bit surprised. I actually expected better. Immediately after I finished eating, I got heartburn 🤦‍♂️. There are other restaurants in the area I would eat at before choosing to dine here. I must say that when our food was served, it looked good. Sadly, looks are deceiving. I would not recommend this place for dinner. However, they may serve a better lunch. Best wishes!

As we finished our UTV experience we stopped to grab a bite to eat on the premises. They were quick to seat us and brought us cold beers. We ordered several appetizers and they were delicious. We ordered the fried mozzarella, alcapurrias, and Bacalaoitos. They were really good, mostly bite size versions.

Wepa Arepa is a must-visit spot for an authentic culinary experience in Puerto Rico. Located just 11 miles from Luquillo Kioskos, it offers freshly made corn tortillas and masa daily, along with mouthwatering tacos like Al Pastor and Surf & Turf Arepa. Visitors rave about the delicious mofongo and strong mojitos. The steak and shrimp arepa receives high praise for its amazing flavor and seasoning.
Food was really good. We got the steak and shrimp arepa, pork taco, beans arepa, and passion fruit juice. I liked it a lot. My family is used to Colombian arepas and were disappointed because the arepa was more like a fry bread instead of a corn masa. The arepas were $15, which was a bit steep, but the tacos were only around $5, which was a steal. The juice was $6, pretty expensive, but I couldn’t turn down a lovely passion fruit juice.

Best kiosko in the Luquillo strip bar none. The arepa is slightly sweet to balance the rich fillings. We got the steak and the shrimp and both were excellent. The salsa that is available on the side is a MUST - it's so fresh and delicious. Moreover, the staff had a great energy and the restaurant is spacious if you want to sit and eat. A great spot to stop by after a beach day in Luquillo. Overall, while most of the dishes along the strip are horrible - this one is a rockstar. Highly recommend.

The Latin Gyro itself is traditional but comes with a twist of cilantro and feta, making it absolutely amazing. The staff is attentive and kind, adding to the overall experience. Visitors rave about the flavorful food and mouth-watering drinks, as well as the top-notch coffee served at the restaurant.
Great food with service to match. Came here with my family for brunch. We were immediately greeted at the door and seated. The wait staff are true professionals, ensuring that our drink orders were taken and presented while we looked over the menu. The food came out in a reasonable time, and when it did arrive, simply amazing is the best way I can describe it. All of our meals exceeded our expectations. Bottom Line Upfront. Great place to eat with the family or a special person in your life. Will definitely be a repeat customer.

After almost 10 years of not visiting PR I was back and was referred to go to this place by a family member. As soon as we stepped in one of the servers say hi to us and made us feel welcomed. I have to say that it was a long time I didn’t experience such a great customer service like I saw in this place. They definitely look that they enjoy working in this place. They were also very attentive with us and everyone around us. The coffee! OMG is the best in the area we actually had to go twice because we loved this place!! We had brunch and breakfast and did not disappoint everything was delicious!! If you ever go you have to try the (Playero coffee) it was delicious!!! All of the servers have a great attitude. I recommend this place %100. They need to visit florida to give some training on customer service here!!! Thanks so much I enjoyed the experience at Latin Gyros, We will definitely go back to visit you on our next trip to PR.

It might not be Greek to you, but it could be. Great breakfast and lunch destination with a dash of Greek flare. Portions are generous, and everything is prepared fresh. We enjoyed some tasty Gyros, complete with tender lamb, a savory tzatziki sauce wrapped in a soft falafel. The atmospehere of the restaurant is cozy and contemporary, it feels both comfortable and welcoming. The staff is uber friendly, working to make sure youre well taken care of. Its a great experience, just on the outskirts of the town center, but well worth the walk or drive. If youre in Luquillo proper, it an easy walk and visit, hours are 7-4pm, so make a morning or afternoon of it.

Ignore the restaurant name and let me tell you about how it’s the top 3 spots in PR to get breakfast. We ordered the Latin French Toast, Tripleta Omelette and small order of pancakes. The tripleta was out of this world and the Latin French toast tasted like churros no need for any added syrup. Espresso and espresso based drinks were on par with NYC coffee shops. Service was quick and amazing - very cordial tentative and nice. Ran by locals and they retain that local vibe without feeling touristy. Run don’t walk to these guys!

First time and it was amazing. The wait can be long but pretty fast in seating. The food size can feed Two people.

My wife and I came in to enjoy a quick brunch before our flight home. We were greeted with a smile, and a quick coffee order before checking the menu. The food was ordered and came out nice and promptly. Absolutely amazing taste, portion size and price. We not only enjoyed our food and experience, but made it to our flight, right on time.

I've delayed reviewing this place way too long. While we were staying in Luquillo we were told by many that Latin Gyros was an absolute must stop for food. I want to start by saying the atmosphere was nice and the service was fantastic. Also for those wondering the bathrooms were spotless. Now lets get to the food. Risotto Croquettes - These were basically Italian Arancini balls served with tomato sauce. These things were amazing, I've had these from my Italian wife and had them in Italy and these were as good as any I've ever had. Caesar Salad - This was a miss for me, my wife makes her own authentic Caesar dressing and what they gave me was far from a Caesar dressing. I wouldn't order this again. Lamb Gyro - The lamb meat was cooked perfectly and the tzatziki sauce was great. The dish was huge and the fries were nice and crispy. The Chicken Sandwich - Chicken was cooked nicely and as you can see the sandwich was loaded with cheese, my son destroyed it. The sauce it came with was also very good, but not spicy as the description says on the menu. Skirt Steak Gyro - As the others the meat was cooked excellent and had tons of flavor. One of the best gyros I've ever had. Tripleta Sandwich - I ordered this because it seemed to be a Puerto Rican specialty and I had not ordered one yet. I loved it and could totally see why the sandwich is so popular. One thing not in any of the photos is a pickle hot sauce that was amazing. If you love pickles you have to try it. I wish we would've eaten here more. This place is well known for their brunch. If we return to Puerto Rico we will be giving this place another visit. Kudos to the owner and staff of this excellent establishment.

Delicious! Everything we got had great flavors, perfect texture. The service is amazing; very kind, helpful people. Iced vanilla coffee was good coffee just not super sweet. It's a cozy, cool little place, and the menu is a QR code on your table.
