If you only have 4 days to spend in Whanganui, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Whanganui offers a blend of riverside scenery, heritage architecture and arts culture centered on the Whanganui River, one of New Zealand’s great historic waterways. Visitors can explore Whanganui National Park by jet boat, kayak or walking tracks, and learn about Māori and settler history at local museums and marae-based experiences. The compact city features well-preserved Victorian and Edwardian buildings, the Durie Hill Elevator and Tower for panoramic views, and respected galleries such as the Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua (currently undergoing redevelopment, with exhibitions hosted in alternate venues). Regular markets, studios and festivals add to its appeal as a small, creative city with easy access to outdoor activities.
With favorites like Stellar Restaurant & Bar, Whanganui River Markets, and New Zealand Glassworks – Te Whare Tuhua O Te Ao (NZG), we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Mint Cafe & Bar and Cactus Creme Cafe so you can get the best taste of Whanganui while you’re here. Virginia Lake Reserve

Park
Virginia Lake Reserve is a stunning park in Wanganui, offering walking trails, picnic spots, and a picturesque lake filled with ducks. The Bason Botanic Gardens nearby feature a diverse range of plant species, including native New Zealand flora. Visitors can enjoy the well-maintained pathways and beautiful winter gardens regardless of the weather. The park is perfect for families and friends to explore, although caution is advised around aggressive geese and friendly ducks.
Virginia Lake, at this time of the year, is a masterpiece of spectacular autumn colours, a serene chilled lake speckled with swan, ducks and Pukeko, and indulgements in simple pleasures like walking hand in hand with your partner.
Andrew K — Google review
This lake is a spectacular sight to see and definitely my favourite spot in Whanganui. Like Pukekura Park in New Plymouth, this attraction is stunningly incredible with a lake, nice walks, the winter gardens and ducks. This spot is great all year round and the ducks do not even run from you! It’s just everyone being friendly and respecting one another. The winter gardens are neat as well, where viewing multiple different plants and large gold fish in their small tanks are great. I honestly think this is one of the best attractions in the Manawatu region!

Lovely place to take a walk. My parents in their 80s took a walk around part of the lake. The stairs are abit challenging (as there wasn't a hand rail)..... Nice to sit in the sun on one of the benches & watch the ducks & birds. The sculpture in the lake is cool We walked up & thru the gardens In the greenhouse/hothouse which had neat Halloween decorations 😉 Then to the Cafe for brunch. Great day trip for my older parents. Also lots of parking on a Friday morning.
Mandy L — Google review
It's a beautiful lake to go and enjoy on a sunny day. It also has a flower garden. I really liked it. It has bathrooms available and parking at the lake.
Lisi S — Google review
The lake is pretty, has a path to walk around it, and has a (botanical?) garden nearby
Albert C — Google review
Virginia lake is a pretty cool spot! It has a coin-operated fountain where you can toss in a dollar for 10 minutes of fun or two dollars for 20 minutes. It's a nice place to relax and watch the water. Plus, there are usually a bunch of ducks hanging around, so make sure you bring some duck food (not bread!) to keep them happy. The cafe is a great touch, perfect for grabbing a coffee or a snack while you're there. The bird aviary is a fantastic addition, offering a chance to see some beautiful birds up close. And a playground nearby makes it ideal for families with younger children. It seems like there's something for everyone to enjoy!
Susan G — Google review
Beautiful little Lake, very well maintained and the biggest variety of Ducks I have seen in one place in New Zealand. Nice little Cafe.
Jeffrey H — Google review
Swarms of ducks and geese come at you as you walk around the lake. The geese in particular terrorise passers by for any crumbs they can wrap their lips around. One of the more confident delinquents had a go at my shoe and wouldn't stop until I handed over my bag of peas. 10/10

Gardens
The Winter Gardens in Virginia Park, Whanganui, is a serene and charming destination for visitors of all ages. Established in 1940 to commemorate the Treaty of Waitangi signing, this Art Deco gem offers a delightful blend of history and horticulture. The gardens feature an array of flora from ferns to high hanging baskets, creating a fantastic display that changes with the seasons. Visitors can also enjoy the bird aviary, where colorful birds of various sizes can be observed up close.
One of the best local reserves. It is big enough for tramping around the lake and small enough for just spending half an hour to take a break on your way to your next destination. The water fountain in the middle of the lake is pretty. The winter garden with different season theme displays.
Lily L — Google review
Small and beautiful. Liked the way they designed it, in a circular way with a tunnel in the middle.

Within the serene confines of Virginia Park in Whanganui, the Centennial Winter Gardens stands as a charming testament to both history and horticulture. Since its inauguration in 1940, commemorating the Treaty of Waitangi signing, this Art Deco gem has been a beacon of color and tranquility for visitors of all ages. Stepping into its squat, Art Deco-styled conservatory, visitors are greeted by a vibrant tapestry of begonias, orchids, and ferns, creating an immersive botanical experience regardless of the season or weather outside. The adjacent outdoor display area further enchants with its floral arrangements, ferns, and serene water features, all complemented by the historic charm of the former park manager's house turned café. While the Winter Gardens exude timeless elegance, they also embrace modernity, featuring rotating displays of colorful annuals alongside permanent plantings. This dynamic blend ensures there's always something new to discover with each visit, making it a perennial favorite for locals and tourists alike. Beyond its botanical wonders, the Winter Gardens offer a whimsical retreat for young visitors, with hidden treasures like a small tunnel and charming statuettes nestled among the foliage and water features. Additionally, the adjacent Art Garden, adorned with sculptures crafted by local art students, adds another layer of cultural richness to the experience. Best of all, entry to this enchanting oasis is free, inviting everyone to bask in its beauty and serenity. Whether seeking solace amidst nature or simply indulging in a leisurely stroll, the Centennial Winter Gardens offers a delightful escape for all who wander through its gates.

Summers day, feeding the ducks, walk around the lake. Very easy walk around the lake with seating with good views. There are a number of walks around the lake with varying times, our walk was half hour, ducks and geese great you around most corners. The winter garden was fantastic everthing from ferns to high hanging baskets. The bird Avery was full of lots of multi colored birds small to large, and you can get very close to them. The big event is that you put $2 for 20mins and watch the fountain in the lake come to life.

Cafe
Springvale Cafe is a popular spot for a delicious and accommodating dining experience. The menu offers options for various dietary needs, including gluten-free and lower carb meals, as well as kid-friendly choices. The warm chicken salad and fries were particularly enjoyable, while the keto ham and cheese scone made with almond flour was a tasty and filling snack option. Despite some wait time during peak hours, the food was described as wonderful, well-priced, and good value.
The food is delicious and beautiful. The shop space is airy and clean.

Very nice cafe, first time here. My dad and I got a bacon and egg thing which was very nice, very filling also. Egg was runny which was great. The Nutella brownie was amazing probably the best brownie I've had. Soft, just like melts in your mouth. I also had half a cheese scone and that was really nice also. Very good service, good vibes. Will be back

I love business succeeding- but value for money within reason and a professional look is vital to me and places I recommend in Whanganui .Golden rule in the food industry -How clean and the presentation on the out side, revels the pride/cleanliness taken in the kitchen. Prices are the top end in this location but sadly is starting to look run down- attempted tables been haphazardly half painted yellow with yellow paint drop over the concrete in the process shows a lack of pride in their premises. This makes a difference to me and in recommending to friends visiting or social gatherings. I wish the new owners well, but a more refined approach to how their premises are presented goes a long way with the clientel that can afford to go there. Food is still presented well but a professional premises are just as important.
J A — Google review
Food is really nice, coffee is a bit small but still good, the prices are a little expensive but overall it’s a nice place. They also don’t make you wait long. It’s usually pretty busy when I come here which means something 🙂
Rose — Google review
Granted it was very busy when we came so expected a bit of a wait for food. Was a little disappointed by the fact they served one of us who had cabinet food almost immediately then we had a huge wait for the cooked food so didn't get to eat at the same time. Also when she bought the food out she just slammed it down on the table rudely. Disappointing experience, however it's obviously a popular destination based on the amount of customers.
Hayley C — Google review
Arrived at the busiest time (just after midday). Queued to place our orders, and advised a wait of approximately 30 minutes. When the food arrived it was wonderful: Fried Haloumi with salad, Fried Haloumi with Cajun Potatoes and Spinach, followed by Raspberry and Almond cake with yogurt. (See pictures)
Beth S — Google review
Very good food and surprisingly quick service given how busy it was. Came in at 1130 on a Saturday (the busiest time of the week) and it was lucky to find a table. Quite a few tables were reserved for events.
Nicholas O — Google review
Food and coffee were average. I had a tulip flat white and had to pay xtra for a double shot. Lots of noise coming out of the kitchen. Staff obviously having a good time but I found it intrusive and distracting.

Kickstart your morning at the vibrant Yellow House Cafe, a charming spot that beckons with its bright yellow exterior and inviting atmosphere. The delightful aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the sweet scent of homemade pastries, creating an irresistible allure. If you find yourself there on a Saturday, don’t miss the Weekly Farmers Market nearby—it's a treasure trove of culinary delights!
What a wonderful cafe that has perfect pancakes and an excellent breakfast menu. The service is very friendly and helpful eventhough they are so busy they have the time with a smile and serve us. The atmosphere, wow, gives you the nostalgic feel. If you are ever in this town, you must not miss a visit.

Lunch on a Saturday. We are returning customers as we enjoyed our first visit here and were keen to return. Unfortunately our second experience wasn’t as good as the first. Menu seemed to be reduced with limited options compared to previous. Overall we had: cream and jam scone - average; pineapple ham savoury muffin - average; lamb burger - good; loaded wedges good. From this we concluded cabinet food is so so and the menu is the go.
Nick R — Google review
Had a scone 5.50$ and a coffee5$ . Acceptable. Will try other items next time. Although looking at the prices they are generic 30+$ for a breakfast with coffee

Convenient and simple spot for coffee and a bite to eat. Good variety of cabinet food. Love the Chai Coconut Banana smoothie! Slices were a little dry and could be served with cream or yogurt to improve service. Maybe I just needed to request it? Service and environment was otherwise ovely.

Every time I come here the meals and coffee are amazing. I can always count on a good experience here. There is gluten free, dairy free and vegan options. The yellow atmosphere is happy and very welcome. Thanks. Love the art on the walls too!

Specialty Museums
The Whanganui Regional Museum, established in 1892, is a cultural gem that offers visitors an immersive experience into the natural and human history of the region. The museum boasts an extensive collection of Lindauer portraits and taonga Maori, providing insight into the treasures and everyday lives of the people of Whanganui. Additionally, the Quartz Museum of Studio Ceramics showcases a rich history of pottery and ceramic art in the area.
Amazing ... quite, peaceful and fun. Could spend hours looking at the butterflies, listening to the birds, making patterns etc etc etc... it also had a play area for the kiddies..
Rauru F — Google review
Really disappointing. So many of the items kept in the museum are gone. The lovely old Victoria Ave walk at the turn of the century was so special as a memory of such a historical town.... I was so looking forward to sharing with my children, but it has all been taken away. Perhaps if all the pictures were moved to the new Art Gallery, it may have made room for the historical items that are locked away from the public. (nice to see the sunfish has remained).
Rochelle L — Google review
A fab museum, runs off donations (free entry). Not huge but the perfect size for an hour or two of exploring. Nice that it has the regional history rather than just repeating the national history. Friendly lady welcomed us and explained what was included in each exhibit and where to find the toilets! There was also a toy/game station to amuse children near the entrance and a couple of other games/activities around the upstairs exhibits too.
Charlotte S — Google review
Very interesting Museum, with lots to learn about Māori and their history. You should plan enough time or visit on two different days, to have enough time to look at everything. The ladies from the reception were also very lovely and helpful. Totally recommend to come and visit when you’re in the area.

Easy accessible, wheel chair friendly, awesome displays that are very educational, interesting not to over whelming. Great areas for children fun and educational. Koha donation. Well worth the visit!

This a great museum with awesome displays of many New Zealand Historical items and events. The displays were well laid out and the explanations were excellent. It would be one of the best museums I have visited in New Zealand. The staff at reception were most helpful and very polite. They answered all my questions and helped to make my visit very worth while.

Very interesting! The Maori canoe is 22m and held 70 warriors! Great collection Maori culture artifacts, paintings and very early photographs and portrait paintings of Maori royalty, Skeletons from Moa (a bird related to the ostrich...their backs are 6ft high!). Early settler equipment. Photographs and artefacts from early Whanganui town centre.
Ian M — Google review
NASA announced that organic molecules have been found on Mars. Organic molecules are the key building blocks of life on Earth. It is theorized that life on earth got kick started from the arrival of meteorites. The Mokoia meteorite in the Whanganui Regional Museum collection is made of carbonaceous chondrite, the rarest of all meteor types. Carbonaceous chondrite is mainly composed of carbon: the atom that defines organic molecules. It has been dated as 4.57 billion years, which makes it the oldest known material in the solar system. Larger bodies like planets and meteorites started forming 10-50 million years later. It is of such significance, that fragments of the specimen are now held in the University of New Mexico, the American Museum of Natural History, the Natural History Museum in London, Arizona State University and The Field Museum in Chicago, the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris and the Geological Survey of India in Calcutta among others. Science is about collaboration which allows scientists to combine their knowledge and resources to form new ideas and make breakthroughs, that might not have been possible by working alone. It is a fantastic museum, well worth visiting. Darwin would be proud. During his stay in New Zealand Darwin collected insects, shells, fish, rocks and a gecko. His detailed observations were carefully recorded in his journal of the Beagle expedition, which was published to much acclaim in 1839. He later wrote that the voyage had been ‘by far the most important event in my life, and has determined my whole career.’ In 1871 Darwin published The Descent of Man, which argued that human beings shared a recent common ancestor with the great African apes.

I originally gave a 5 star rating for my nails. They were gorgeous!!! However, on my last visit 3 weeks ago i decided to get my extensions removed. I didn't realise at the time, but the male technician buffed and filed my natural nails down to almost nothing! They were so soft and painful. Even today my nailbeds are still red (see photo). I still cant open a can of drink with my fingers. The past 3 weeks whenever my nails start to grow they just crumble so my nails are super short now. So disappointed. Will not go here again!

This wasn’t our first visit & we will keep coming back here every time we come to Whanganui (oftentimes). Service is consistently amazing. The staffs are customer friendly and truly attentive. Bridgette did exactly just that with us. She patiently waited and attentively listened to our dietary restrictions. Thanks Bridgette! You are a superstar. Most Ludicrous price in this while entire country for a small snap squeeze tomato sauce to enjoy with my daughter's savoury potato top pie. $1.50!!!!! Can you believe? Never in my life have I ever come across it, ever. The owners of this cafeteria should seriously rethink about this. Wouldn't you prefer to know that your patrons were enjoying their powers properly with tomato sauce rather with none. For I witnessed every single person eating pieces in here today, all without sauce. As they weren't mad enough to spend that rediculous price on such a thing.
Tui H — Google review
So extremely disappointed. Paid $27.50 for the bacon pancakes to find the pancakes similar to the ones I buy in the supermarket, not fresh, dry and all perfectly shaped and thickness all round… these were not made fresh, I ordered and it came out 9 minutes later. As for the banana, I had to remove the skin off it myself. The bacon was enough for half of the pancakes. The only decent thing on this plate was the maple syrup and the garden they threw on top to make it look pretty. 27.50 for this is extremely unacceptable

We visit this cafe every time we come to Whanganui. Everything is always very good. Today we were very disappointed in the scones. We always get a cheese scone with our coffee. Please go back to your old recipe/baker. 😢🙏

Tried getting a McRib. What is that? Buns were dry, no sauce at all, onions aren't cooked, meat tastes like cardboard, half the onions and pickles were in the box. Very disappointed in this. Doesn't look like how it's advertised at all.
Jett W — Google review
Came in here on the evening of Sunday 4th June approx 2145hrs. Drive through looked reasonably busy. Foyer only moderately so. Building inside looks dilapidated and run down. Not particularly appealing or clean 'looking'. Receipts lying all round the floor, maybe a dozen or so. You'd think someone should have been tasked to keep the foyer tidy. One of the kiosks wasn't printing receipts- not a biggie in itself. Serious Angus burger looked seriously skinny to me. Opened the lid on it and it didn't even come up to the rim of the bottom half of the box. Fries warming but that was it. Not overly impressed. Place looks like no one gives a damned.
Gerard M — Google review
Food was average as the big Mac build was way out the window. The middle bun was next to the top bun, the patties were together and was basically put together with a lack of order or care. The Waite time was also rather long with a 12 minute wait and no receipt was put in the bag. This was however at about 23:30ish on a Saturday night so I would've expected a bit more. The staff member that took my order was polite.

Kristy's Cafe is a quirky spot that boasts an eclectic decor featuring vintage tools adorning the walls, creating a unique ambiance. Known for its signature savory pies and all-day breakfast offerings, this cafe has something for everyone. While some visitors have found the food to be average and prices on the higher side, others rave about the deliciousness of their meals. The service is generally praised as friendly and efficient, although there can be delays during busy times with limited staff.
We went to breakfast on a Sunday morning and there was only one cook and one server which made the wait to eat, long. But we aren't complaining about that, just FYI kind of thing. The food was amazing and service was great. It was clean and very unique inside. Theres inside and outside seating, bathrooms available and decent parking spaces. Nice choices and plenty of options on the menu. We were happy we stopped by. They left a good impression on us.
D B — Google review
I recently visited Kristy's Cafe and was a bit disappointed with my experience. The food was average and the prices were quite expensive for what you got. I had the kids hamburger with fries, which was okay but definitely could have been better for the price. Overall, I would give Kristy's Cafe a 3.5 out of 5 stars. While the atmosphere and service were nice, the food and prices didn't quite live up to my expectations. It's not a bad place to eat, but there are likely better options in the area for the same price or less. That being said, the cafe has some redeeming qualities such as friendly staff, so it's worth considering if you're in the area and looking for a quick bite to eat.
Steve M — Google review
August 2022. I must say after Christy’s sold her restaurant the quality hasn’t dropped. The new owners maintained the tradition of delicious pastries and the venison pie is no longer on the menu, but my new favorite is Mince with Mushrooms. Best venison pie in New Zealand. Christy is up for sale that’s a little bit sad. We were lucky to get this legendary pie

Nice place to take children, great concept. I was a little disappointed with the breakfast though overall it lacked in taste. Asked for over easy eggs and it didn't quite meet expectations even after we sent them back for a touch up they came back as shown. 3 stars overall as it is a nice place and deserves another try but 2 stars for the meal on the day.

Great pies!! Very nice pastry and filling. Coffee was excellent- hot and good flavour! Kids enjoyed. Perfect highway side stop- cozy ambience and nice outdoor seating.

We asked "do you really have the best pies in Wanganui" they said yes. I think I should have asked "do you have the best pies in new Zealand/Australia" And I can answer that for you. Yes.

Whanganui, situated on the North Island's west coast, is renowned for its historical significance and cultural heritage. The city is nestled at the mouth of the Whanganui River, New Zealand's longest navigable river, offering breathtaking views of mountains, parks, beaches, and native forests. The Whanganui River Markets are a popular attraction in the area.
Great range of food and things to buy. Bought a great hat. Had strawberries and chocolate in a punnet. Bought Nice artisan bread from a stall too.! Parking is a bit tough with roadworks but doable.

Paddle Steamer Waimarie is a historic coal-fired passenger paddle steamer in Whanganui, New Zealand. Rescued and restored after 50 years underwater, it offers leisurely cruises along Te Awa o Whanganui. The boat features a museum showcasing the river's history and offers informative commentary during the cruise. Visitors can enjoy tea, coffee, and cakes on board while taking in stunning views of the river and its surroundings.
A river cruise on the beautiful Whanganui river, in genuine old paddle steamer. History and lovely sights and a super friendly crew. Jusy do it, so worth the time.

Doesn't worth the money $55/adult. Boring 2 hour trip with muddy river water surrounded by trees and minimum commentary and no activity at all. Staff looks unbothered and no complementary drink etc. The boat was overfilled and left with no proper seating. I have done many boat trips in north island and this one is least entertaining.

This was such an amazing experience! The boat ride was really pleasant with historic commentary. You could see straight down to the coal engine. You were also able to see them shovel coal into the engine. Their little museum was also quite extraordinary! Highly recommend!

Paddle and Bike Package - what a lovely time we had. We cruised up the river in the 125 year old steam driven Waimarie and got dropped off at Upokongaro and had a gin tasting and then lunch and then it was a pleasant bike back to the Riverboat Center. I highly recommend it. You could take a picnic and stop somewhere by the river.

Additionally, they have a dedicated vegan menu along with beer and wine selections. Situated just meters away from the CBD, Mud Ducks provides a relaxed setting both indoors and outdoors.
Clean and friendly cafe, the vegan options were really nice especially as you can make your own breakfast with sides. I had the salmon poached eggs bene, really nice, a whole piece of salmon 😍

Service is always top notch, always served by a Maori Man everytime we go, he should open his own business and train others, he honestly is superb and his job. The food however, not sure what’s happened but the food really has gone down hill. Never have i before been served eggs bene on toast, especially not from this place. Price does not reflect the food. This was always our go to place for breakfast or lunch, not sure if we will be returning!!

A very good information center down by the river, with plenty to do on site. A very big range of information and lovely helpful staff. Cafe in the building and well kept clean toilets. Plenty of parking nearby. There is also a restored tram offering rides next door to the center and cafe.

The Durie Hill Elevator, a unique attraction in Whanganui, New Zealand, is the only one of its kind south of the Equator. Built in 1919 to provide easy access to the Durie Hill Garden Suburb, this underground elevator offers visitors an exciting way to explore the area and enjoy breathtaking views.
We have visited this location twice, as it was definitely worth a re-visit to Whanganui after some years away. The Durie Hill Tower and Elevator are probably the first places you think of when you think of Whanganui. They are both stunning, giving views of the city and nearby Tasman Sea. The elevator takes you down to the bottom but the views from the top are neat as they are.
Straan W — Google review
The walk through the tunnel towards the elevator is well lit with changing colours. The elevator itself is still an experience not to be missed. Nice to know it is run by paid staff now. Lovely views of Wanganui city and the river from the rooftop.
Chris T — Google review
Even though I live but a stone's throw away from this incredible transportation attraction, I haven't visited it for some time. Here's some picture updates of this must see one-of-a-kind in NZ...from the top anyway.
Andrew K — Google review
We were naive and didn't look up their operating hours (showed up 8 mins to closing), but the operator was very friendly and let us walk down to the bottom before taking the lift back up as his last ride of the day. Worth the stop here if you're passing through as the experience in the tunnel is quite unique — especially if you're the only party there. This is one of two community-servicing elevators left in the world, and the ride is very affordable!
Christopher P — Google review
Nice experience with the short tunnel with colourful lights. Durie hill lift is very old school but very well maintained. Nice view from the top. Worth visiting if you haven’t been there. Prefer to park the car at the car parking close to the river bridge and go for a short walk and enjoy the tunnel walk and hill view.
Vinay P — Google review

A great place to climb to the top and view the Whangnui river of to the Sea, and surrounding area. Wonderful for photos. The platform at the top is open, but fenced. Probably a dozen parking spots at the foot of the tower

This is a real kiwi hidden gem. Well worth a look if you are a visitor to Whanganui. The Elevator is one of only two in the world and was built to allow a new garden suburb to be developed in 1919. A real social experiment. At the top of the ride is the suburb worth a few minutes exploring especially the different building styles of the 1900s to 1930s. It's only a couple of dollars ,the staff are passionate and knowledgeable. Photos are taken from the WW1 tower at the top of the elevator ride

The bar Frank Bar + Eatery offers an extraordinary experience with its remarkable staff, delectable food, and exceptional cocktails. The friendly and attentive team is always ready to assist, providing quick service whenever needed. The cocktails served are beyond ordinary, showcasing a mix of artistry and molecular gastronomy that amazes the senses. This venue in Wellington or Auckland CBD has a stylish interior design and well-stocked bar, making it a must-visit destination.
Had the Portobello Burger, which was SUPER YUMMM! Was with a very large group and we all recived great service. Enjoyed a couple of cocktails - Raspberry & Rhubarb Margarita and Pina colada. They were very well presented and well made. Would definitely return for dinner and/or drinks.

Not sure what’s happened but Frank has significantly gone downhill 😢 Waited an hour for mains, even though there was only 2 other tables occupied tonight (Friday night). Steak so overcooked husband had to send it back, seafood tortellini was cold and tasted like it was out of a can. $43-$45 for each dish. Really disappointing as it’s been over a year since we’ve been to Frank, which used to be the most amazing restaurant in Whanganui, with the best food / menu / atmosphere ever! Love to support local, but sorry, no stars from us 🙁

I would love to leave a review for the awesome Cassidy!!! My mother, daughter and I, had come down from Auckland to stay in Waverley during the holidays and had a look over places to eat in Whanganui. We decided on Franks! I'm so glad we did because (besides the yummy food and great ambiance) we had the most amazing server. Cassidy was funny, she was kind and went above and beyond. I really enjoyed the Playlist playing and she unplugged the phone to show me how to follow on Spotify. Cassidy helped us pick the perfect wine by giving us some testers. She helped us pick our dinner options when we were stuck on 2 choices. She was just 10/10. Made a lasting impact. Even though we are all the way from Auckland, we will be back. You've given us a great outlook on the vibe of Whanganui. Thanks Cassidy!!! 😊

Best meal we've had in Whanganui since moving here 7 years ago. I had the fish and the flavors were fresh and delicious. Hubby's pasta was tasty and filling. 100x better than the usual pub bistro meals you normally get at other eaterys. Nice vibe with a great crowd there.

There for lunch... it was OK... but priced far above what it turned out to be. Service: food arrived at vastly different times per person Food: grey thin steak w limp chips ... imagine supermarket frozen meat patty, but steak. Bear in mind, this was a quiet day and slightly late for lunch... my experience may not be typical. Me? Won't be back.

Nestled in the heart of Whanganui, Orange Cafe & Bistro is a delightful spot that perfectly captures the essence of a cozy street-side cafe. With its inviting atmosphere and friendly staff, it's an ideal place for those on the go or anyone looking to unwind. The menu offers a diverse selection of dishes, making it easy to find something delicious whether you're in a rush or enjoying a leisurely meal.
Underestimated how well the food was going to taste. It's absolutely amazing. You know how to cook lamb very well. Very interesting atmosphere, retro but cool. The only downside is there is no table service when we visited.

Updating review time. 😌 This would have to be one of the best, if not the best locations in Whanganui for a street-side cafe. Honestly, you're sitting in Heritage Heartland... The coffee could have been a little hotter, but everything was quite pleasant.

Nice decor, and friendly staff. But the food was below average and over priced compared to other amazing cafes. Two of us had a pie each from the cabinet was very dissapointed - hardly much filling inside. My son's burger was dissapointing too and so expensive. The bathroom/toilet was filthy. The toilet bowl was black. My Mother-in-law also mentioned how discusting it was.
Kim — Google review
Couldn’t serve alcohol because manager was away, food was actually cold (not even luke warm). The nachos had about 50g of mince amongst the sour cream and chips, a rip off for 27 bucks! Coffee was burnt, steak was chewy and service was poor. Won’t be coming back.
Karlis Z — Google review
Nice café at the city centre. Everything ticks the list especially the ambience. Can be more clean(not food or tables). The dust on the light fittings, decors or wall fittings.

Polite staff, nice friendly atmosphere. The food is well presented, just a bit small on the portion size. I enjoyed my breakfast. However, the hash stack wasn't enough to fill my hungry husband's belly
Patricia N — Google review
We've visited this cafe before earlier in the year and it was run by a diverse, super friendly bunch of people. The food amazing. This visit the food, service and friendliness surpassed our previous experience. We sat outside and enjoyed the early afternoon sun, the lunch crowd must have gone as it was nice and quiet, with the incoming foot traffic being stable and many people leaving with smiles. We enjoyed the Hash Stack and the Eggs Bene, both were superb! Eggs for the Bene were perfect served with tangy hollandaise sauce, and the HS was en pointe accompanied by a creamy mushroom side. Tea for two with a round of freshly baked shortbread, hit the spot as well. The carrot cake, was full of flavour, with plump sultanas and delicious cream-cheese icing. We'll return to sample the dinner menu soon. The only photos I remembered to take was of the tea set (the food was all gone by then!) and carrot cake.

May 2025 I had seafood basket, was quite nice. The fish pieces were the tastiest of everything. I struggled to get through the lot and ended up leaving most of the chips. Could have done with more tartare sauce, also I didn't get any tomato sauce that should have been with this meal. My wife had the pork belly meal, she said it was OK. She thought it was more like roast pork than twice cooked pork belly. Also the mash potatoes were lumpy. She says 6 out of 10. We both think we would dine here again if we were back this way.
Peter T — Google review
This place was a fine stop for dinner. Steak was cooked well and the ribs were a great deal on rib night ($20 and you get an extra couple of ribs to the normal portion), served with a finger bowl too. They had ran out of several beers on tap which was a shame but still a few to choose between. I had a margarita which was nice - they had cocktails and some mocktails which is always nice to see! We were seated by the window which was nice, although meant we were right by the door which was less pleasant, thankfully they weren't too busy so it didn't ruin the evening

Honest review here! We eat out quite a lot, I ordered the serloin steak which was cooked really well, good amount of chips and some salad. My partner had fish which was cooked well and was nice and fresh. Nothing flash here but tasty. If I could put any constructive criticism, it would be the price, a little bit pricey and when it was time to pay I noticed a sneaky milkshake added to the bill, but that was sorted no problem. Thanks guys an enjoyable meal.
Ian W — Google review
My husband’s steak was cooked perfectly, but unfortunately, my pork ribs were the worst I’ve ever had. I’m not a professional chef, but I do cook a lot at home, and honestly, my own ribs turn out much better. Before anyone asks, “Then why eat out?” because it was a date night. We wanted to enjoy a nice meal together. The ribs were incredibly tough, and the sauce tasted like it came straight from a Wattie’s BBQ bottle, veryyy very sweet. I’m not the type to complain at the table, so we forced ourselves to finish, but we both ended up feeling sick afterwards. I really hope this was just an off night and that they improve for future diners, but unfortunately, we won’t be rushing back any time soon.
Yzel T — Google review
Very poor customer service. We booked a table and turned up, but it seems the new staff member made an error with the booking — totally understandable, and we don’t blame her at all. However, the way the manager handled it was shocking. Instead of apologising, he was rude, dismissive, and basically asked us to leave. Imagine trying to explain that to an 8-year-old who was excited for a nice family meal. Terrible attitude and absolutely no customer service skills — definitely not the right person for that role.

We had booked a table, but when we arrived, we were told the booking hadn’t been entered properly — apparently a new staff member took the call. That’s totally understandable; mistakes happen. What really disappointed us was the way it was handled. The manager (I assume) was extremely rude, offered no apology, and asked us to leave. We had our whole family with us and were looking forward to a nice meal, but instead we were made to feel unwelcome and basically kicked us out.

The Wanganui Cosmopolitan Club and RSA is a fantastic destination for both locals and visitors, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere perfect for any occasion. Whether you're looking to enjoy a delicious meal at their first-class restaurant or unwind with friends over drinks, this club has something for everyone. Families will appreciate the variety of activities available, including pool and snooker tables for those seeking a bit of friendly competition. The entertainment lineup on Friday and Saturday nights ensures that you can dance the night away in style.
Just moved to Whanganui, opted to have my daughters 18th Birthday at the Club as a reciprocal member of another Club. First time being in the Club and highly greatful and impressed with the service and the support in setting our girls birthday up. The Bar Staff/Manager were 👌 welcoming and Attentive. The ONE and ONLY downfall was the wait time for our food orders, not all but pretty much the last orders, to be honest, I expected that, cause the Clubs I have been to tend to have the same issue being only minimal kitchen staff, but did dissapoint the family members that had to wait. I will say though, the food was beautiful, unfortunately we didn't have pudding so next time we will All in all, I will be signing up to the Club and feel like I will have further functions there.

Fantabulous, the people are super friendly, amazing restaurant, great value, pool tables, darts and snooker tables, when the karaoke is on, amazing, regular Bands play. Definitely worth heading to and having some food and drinks listening to some great music

Would have been good if they updated menus on board on the counter. Things on the new menu we wanted weren't available. Got told resturant is shutting down so decided not to join. . Lovely people and staff at the club though.

Excellent place to visit, day or night. Friendly staff and a great variety of things to do for the family. A first class restaurant is on site which caters for the most discerning tastes. A good variety of entertainment is put on each Friday and Saturday nights so you can dance the night away to your hearts content. There's pool/Snooker for the enthusiastic bunch if you want to have a bit of a challenge or simply go in for the atmosphere.

Had my Mother-in-laws 80th birthday here. A very good meal of a generous serving size. Service was generally good except the bar lady who a number of people had a rude experience with her. We would go back again as everyone had a great time.

Gardens
Bason Botanic Gardens is a vast expanse of greenery with diverse collections of exotic and indigenous plants, situated in Whanganui. Prominent features include winding trails, open fields, terraced gardens with different shaped earthenware pots at various tiers creating corridors leading down to the bottom and beyond. One of the highlights is the Friendship Garden which boasts an impressive twisted sculpture. The reserve offers ample space for family or work functions complete with barbeque facilities scattered throughout the area.
A huge open parkland area, immaculately maintained. The plants are interesting, but you can just spend all day strolling around the area, use the facilities to have a BBQ, find a spot for a picnic, or simply have a nice family afternoon. Well worth a special trip.
Peter H — Google review
This is my first visit to a botanical garden in New Zealand, and as someone who studied horticulture in university, I am truly amazed. Even in the chilly winter, the garden is so vibrant with colors. The public facilities are very clean, and every path is clearly marked. It is very quiet, making it easy to get immersed in the surroundings. The staff are very friendly. When I asked one of them where I could park, she patiently explained the parking areas and gave me directions. People greet each other warmly, and everyone is very kind. It must be even more beautiful in spring, and I hope to have the chance to visit again.
DingDing Z — Google review
Always a lovely place to go to. Today we had a picnic and had a BBQ with the free BBQs they provide. The toilet was clean and stocked, the gardens were well maintained, and everyone had space to do their thing. We go pretty often to the gardens and see the beautiful plants and drive around. 10/10
Emily R — Google review
This was my first visit and yes the gardens were impressive. Firstly I saw the trees while driving in just majestic and sadly due to torrential rain I didn't see the whole garden. I came to see the collection of Jean Stevens hybrid iris collection and I wasn't disappointed below I've added a few photos. You don't often see chimerism in an iris so I've added the photo . This one is named Aurora Lights a plicata , it made my day adding extra hues of the rainbow on such a rainy day. Next bloom season 2025, October through November will be a sight for historic iris lovers.

Beautiful open park like gardens. Download a map as it's not too clear where you are. Very narrow entrance so caravans and RVs be careful. Very peaceful
Penny R — Google review
Situated 15 minutes from the Whanganui city center, Bason Botanical Gardens (off Rapanui Rd) is a small piece of paradise, and a definite must see if you are in or near Whanganui. Entrance to the gardens is free and there is ample and accessible parking all over the park. There is a wide variety of native and exotic plant life to enjoy, along with some interesting sculptures, scattered throughout the gardens (of which there are 8 different areas). This place is ideal for a nice relaxing picnic with the family (several gas barbeques are available to use at no charge) or a scenic walk away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. I highly recommend a visit to anyone who is in the area, you will not be disappointed!
Maurice V — Google review
Great place to visit - almost any time of year. The easy access site has ample parking, free toilets and little guidance from gardeners/carers or "staff" on the weekend. The grounds have several set walls in park-like surroundings in addition to the Friendship Garden and the Conservatory. The mixed contour landscape might make driving rather than walking more feasible for timid pedestrians. The landscape features are interesting in addition to the trees, bushes and extensive range of "flowers", succulents and a wide range of different 'gardens'. Clearly the exact plants, and condition of the plants, reflect the season in which you visit (and so its great to visit more than 'just the once '). The rhododendron are outstanding in October.
Myke W — Google review
An absolute gem of a place, beautiful gardens with a fascinating history. Perfect spot for a picnic, or use one of the many public BBQs. Best of all, it's free entry!

Brett M — Google review
Great beach! Go on a day when it's not windy, went today and almost got blown off my feet. But scenery is great and the sand is black which is unique. Loads of driftwood everywhere. Look, it's an nz beach so don't expect nice warm fluffy sand, swimming and sunbathing. If you go expecting freezing driving wind, freezing water and hardish compact sand you won't be disappointed. All in all very nice!
Lee R — Google review
Black sand beach within close walking distance to the popular Citadel Cafe and highly recommended campground and playground at the end of Rangiora Street. Plenty of parking and space to run the dog or kick a ball. Swimmin is recommended between the flags in front of the Pavillion where Surf guards patrol in the summer. Beware of the rips and undertow, stay safe.

The pools are nice, but the showers at the women's section were freezing cold. We told reception, and they could only tell us the hot water goes to the men's first, and that they might be using it all. They need to find a solution, as it was genuinely impossible to shower in that water.

What a lovely find in Whanganui . Arriving late in the night but was welcomed in so wonderfully . The room was super comfortable , the heater had been turned on after I’d rung which was super thoughtful . The fudge was great too . Clean comfortable and with incredible hosts . The world-class gardens are well maintained year round. I enjoy the challenging walk zones as much as the time spent ambling amongst the flaura and fauna. Theres an ok mix of natives and exotic species- inasmuch a way that it may offend some purests of either denomination. Very highly recommended! Great fish and chips, cooked well and well worth the price and the wait. Great menu options that worked for our whole family. The team were lovely and friendly - and up front about the wait given they were so busy (no wonder - quality food!!)

Ordered through deliver easy. Have called them and laid a complaint. I ordered $35 pack : x2 fish, x2 hotdogs, x3 crab sticks and x2 scoops chips also added half a scoop. I only received 23 chips. Yes I already at a hot dog and crab stick but holy hell if that's 2 and a half scoops you are getting ripped off.

I have to be honest, by far the worst fish n chip shop ive ordered from ! I spent over $40 & the food was shocking & way over priced for the quality you recieve .. To the left is a steak & egg burger $8.20 "where is the steak" it was mainly meat patty .. The middle is a lemon fish $4.20 & the inside was horrible .. To the farr right that is the entire meal i had paid for, the scoop of chips for $3 was so dissapointing i honestly felt so ripped off as i only went there because i heard great things about this store, i was proved wrong!! At my original fish & chip store i usualy order 2× $5 packs & 2× ham burgers which costs $16 the $5 packs consist of 1× fish 1× hotdog 1× scoop of chips & chicken nuggets from glasgow take aways !! I hate giving bad reviews but i had to let people know that my experience wasnt all that great 😔

Bushy Park Sanctuary is a secluded and captivating bird sanctuary that effectively exhibits the local avian species in a safe habitat. The preservation efforts ensure minimal disruption to the animals and the heritage of the area. With a visitor center and charming Cafe set within an ancient manor, visitors can enjoy tea and scones while immersing themselves in history. While wheelchair access is available within the manor, exploring the grounds requires navigating through nature trails, making it more challenging.
Bushy Park, Dale and his excellent staff. There are not enough superlatives to express my joy at staying at the Gem in New Zealand. I could wax lyrically about this place for hours, the staff, Dale, the surroundings, the walks, the food. Beautiful bush lands, such a brilliant job done to maintain and keep secure this jewel by all who were involved. They have very knowledgeable guides who were very polite and enthusiastic about this gorgeous sanctuary. We seen some native birds up close that we have only seen in books, such a wonderful experience and recommend that everyone local or tourist go visit this beautiful piece of paradise.

Went there for just a quick activity. turns out it was way more interesting than i thought! The mansion is impressive, the hikes around the property were lovely and there were many birds. The luxurious vegetation was one of the most impressive of my trip.

A truly wonderful, treasured place! Well looked after, beautiful fauna and flora and various walking tracks to explore within a good distance of the carpark/Visitor Centre/Homestead. I was there in the late afternoon, and there were may tieke/saddleback, toutouwai/NI robin, as well as a few hihi/stitchbirds, kererū and tui. The tall Northern rātā, rimu and puketea were really neat to see.

This park is a true gem. Countless volunteer hours have been devoted to bringing the bush back to life. All sorts of walk options through recovering bush with birdsong from the rare bird population protected by a predator proof fence. The homestead was closed for the winter. We were the only humans in the park for the most part. Very tranquil.

Our homeschooling group went to Bushy Park today and it was an amazing experience! The kids had a great time and learned a lot. It was so lovely having the educators take use through the different areas in the park and they were so passionate, it was really heartwarming. We'll definitely be going again soon!

Free bird sanctuary with multiple nature walks through the forest. If you do the 3 shorter loop trails it will take a little over an hour at an easy pace. There are some stairs and gentle slopes. We went on a cold, rainy day and didn't see a whole lot, but we heard a good amount of birds. Saw probably 3-4 species. I feel like there would have been a lot more activity if it were warmer or less rainy. Still was enjoyable. You can also look at one of the largest native trees in NZ on one of the trails. It was impressive. Recommend waterproof shoes if it's been raining recently. The paths are mostly packed dirt, but not very muddy. Has a small, indoor, self-service info room and bathrooms.

Cool place for the slightly older crowd, live music most weekends and a nice relaxed vibe. I always have a good time when I go to Lucky Bar. There is a nice outdoor section to, which is great in the summer and gives a nice space to get away from the live music if it's not your thing. They mostly do bar snacking food, and it was fine, nothing amazing but adequate. A good night out and recommend giving the place a try!

Very impressed by this place, we gathered here in a rather large group after a funeral (with around 8 kiddies in tow.) The staff were welcoming and attentive not only to the adults but to the little guests too. What was intended to be a drink and debrief after the ceremony became dinner and a really wonderful evening. When it came time to order meals there was a range of gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options available so everybody was catered for. I believe they make everything on the menu in house too? Guys, it shows. The food was delicious. I'm a Whanganui expat living overseas now and I can't tell you what a delight it was to come home and find such a beautiful little addition to the city, go Lucky Bar. Top notch hospitality. Only bummed we had to head off before the live music!

A comfortable place to be for our large group of friends gathering after a funeral. Food was delicious and we appreciated the large area we were able to use despite dinner guests arriving. Great little place to catch up with friends - concerts are a little lacking, they kind of need a stage or raised area so that you can see the performers (it would make it feel like a concert rather than having a band in your living room)

Burger King Whanganui is a popular fast-food destination that specializes in delicious grilled burgers, crispy fries, and refreshing shakes. During a recent visit on a Saturday night with my son, we were pleasantly surprised by the calm atmosphere and exceptional service. They even offered him a sample of an ice drink to help him decide on the flavor—what a thoughtful touch!
I went in here with my son on a Saturday night. It was quiet. Service was great. My son has Down Syndrome and the staff on the counter took their time to understand him and take his order. Takeout Restaurant
If you're on the hunt for a culinary adventure, look no further than Delicious North Indian Takeaway. This gem offers an authentic taste of North India that will tantalize your taste buds from the moment you step in. The menu is brimming with aromatic dishes, and their butter chicken is a must-try—creamy and rich, it pairs perfectly with their cheesy naan. For those who enjoy a bit of spice, the beef vindaloo delivers just the right kick without overwhelming your palate.
Had Dinner from here tonight and it was great. Really yummy Onion Bhaji with Tamarind sauce. Big serving to.. Cheese and garlic Naan great tasty and full of filling. Chicken Brijani was really tasty, full of chicken and great it contained no bones or portions just chicken meat which makes it so much more enjoyable to eat. Authentic and great tasting Really recommend this place. Take care outside the shop as the area where the shops are and locals hanging round outside seemed a bit Feral.

First off the time given for preparation was over estimated so the food was sitting on the counter waiting (not being kept warm) 🙁 We ordered lamb korma; the lamb was tough and rubbery and the korma was hot and light brown, Not creamy and mild. Onion bhaji was nice flavours however sadly it was cold and rubbery.

We were excited to try this takeaway, since that was the first Indian cuisine for my parents. Luckily, they loved it. They tried the mildly spicy Chicken Madras, which is a great choice if you want to introduce someone to Indian food. I ordered the Karahi lamb, which was tasty and had a great balance of spices. The takeaway restaurant has long opening hours, and the portions are decent.
Attila K — Google review
Tried this place for the first time yesterday, the lunch special is good value for money. We had the beef vindaloo medium yesterday, was very good. Just now I finished my butter lamb (mild) and it was bloody delicious!!! 👌 Just like the name says, no lies there. It's soo creamy, stupid creamy, and the lamb is so soft. Highly recommend ☺️

I have been returning here the past 5 years for the Best butter chicken in town. I always refer friends and take my out of town visitors here, they have all been overly impressed saying it was the best Butter chicken they had tasted. Delicious every time. Love the garlic Naan, Homemade vegetable Samosa and Onion Bhjai are also extremely tasty. Excellent lunch deals at an affordable price.

I would rate this the best & freshest in Whanganui. Lovely family who provides great customer service. Thank you (pic of butter prawn mild. yum) *Tip* We always phone order about half hr - 1hr in advance because it's made fresh. Soooo much better than the Auckland Indian takeaways I use to order from.

Absolutely one of the best indian food experiences in NZ. Just go if you can. Pretty uninspiring shop but the food! Oh wow! Had Beef Kamahi Masala with onion bahji and onion paratha. So good 👍

Day 4

Proximity is everything
For day 4, we bundled attractions like War Memorial Tower and Royal Whanganui Opera House and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 8 hours.

War Memorial Tower

Monument
The War Memorial Tower, located next to the Durie Hill elevator in Whanganui, stands at 33.5 meters high and offers panoramic views of the entire district. Visitors can climb its 176 steps for a breathtaking experience at the top. The tower is accessible by driving up or taking the ratchety old Durie Hill Elevator, which costs $2 per person.
Great tower. Be prepared if you are going up the tower. It is 176 very circular stairs up and 176 very circular stairs down. I am fit my legs hurt for days Gorgeous views
Fiona E — Google review
A bit of a staircase flight to climb but when you get to the top, you'll get 360 degree views of Whanganui 🥰 Free admission Free parking
JOYNME L — Google review
It's very high and can make you dizzy if you're sensitive, as the staircase is spiral. But it's worth reaching the top because the view is beautiful and panoramic. There's plenty of parking. (when the place is not too crowded of course). I recommend it
Lisi S — Google review
Great remembrance for those that went to fight for our country. Nice little work out on the steps, it can be very windy on a blustery day but well worth the effort.
Pete — Google review
Kind of cool place. You can catch a 160yr old lift up to the tower. Leaves from the street at bottom of Durie Hill. The charge is $2.50 and if you prefer you can walk a paved track back down. Awesome vista of Whanganui city and river from up there and there's benches to just sit for a while and take it all in. As an historic site it's also interesting to read about the place noted on the information board.
Lynda — Google review
Iconic tower in Whanganui. Visited this place way back in February 2010, when I was living in the town for a year (student at UCOL). Good memories last forever. 👍🏽
Timothy J — Google review
173 steps to climb the tower...amazing view it's windy...we had fun climbing the stairs
Eric M — Google review
You can see the whole of Whanganui district from here. I forgot to count the number of steps to climb up and down. It may take you a good 10 minutes to go up. It is very windy on the top so look after your hat and even cellphones. This is a free attraction and quite a unique one. Across the road are the public toilets as none is in the tower. You can visit this area by driving up to the tower or take the Durie lift which costs 2 dollars a person. We took the lift and climbed up the spiral tower.

The Royal Whanganui Opera House stands as a magnificent testament to New Zealand's cultural heritage, showcasing its status as the last remaining Victorian theatre in the country. With its striking gold columns and pristine white exterior, this architectural gem exudes elegance. Inside, visitors are greeted by plush seating and luxurious red carpeted corridors that enhance the operatic ambiance of this historic venue.
Awesome night out. First time we have been here but such a lovely building. Sound was great for the show we went to - couldn't fault it. Lovely staff too.

We hosted a 60th birthday on the weekend on the Stage at the Royal Whanganui Opera House. An absolutely incredible space which suited our needs which was made for such an incredible occasion. Thanks to Maria who was a phenomenal Coordinator who made our event so special and amazing. Also our barman was incredibly friendly, accommodating and happy to help with anything else we needed. Everything they did was above and beyond.
Carmen W — Google review
We went to watch the Whanganui Comedy Gala and the show was absolutely hilarious. The Opera House is still as beautiful as ever but it was a very very cold night, so I recommend heavy layers & a wee blanket in the winter months, the heaters were on but they can only do so much in a Grand old lady like her.
Jodi-Anne H — Google review
Phillip and I saw the Michael Jackson tribute concert and the staff were fantastic. Phillip rang and ordered the ticket's, he asked the lady for seating as I'd had knee surgery and she gave us seating on the end which was easier for me to get in and out. We also had a good view of the stage.
Lovsywovsyyummygirl — Google review
My husband & I went to Kevin Bloody Wilson on the 7th sep. Kind of liked it but very crude. Wouldn't bother going again. But the staff were extremely caring & wonderful. Very uncomfortable seats though specially after 2 hrs.

Bar
Porridge Watson is a bar that offers a delightful experience, whether you're in need of food, drinks, or entertainment. The cuisine served here is remarkable as evidenced by the empty plates left behind after lunch. Even picky eaters raved about the exceptional fries. This establishment boasts an impressive array of beverages and features an eccentric decor that caters to all tastes. One can't help but be drawn to its cool ambiance and laid-back vibe.
I like the consistency of this bar. Feels the same today as it did 3 years ago. There's a food menu so I was excited to try it on this visit back to Whangnaui. The burger tasted great but very oily, I think it was $22 dollars for their version of the double cheese burger (fries not included). The bun was basically just a wet mush of oil. When you add a drink and a side such as fries, it's approaching the $40 mark and you'd really expect better quality. There's better burger joints in town (better burger, better price, even the Burger King is better), however this is definitely the place to go after the burger 😊
Ice M — Google review
We don’t get to Whanganui that often now but we always make a beeline for PW. The coolest bar in Whanganui in the coolest street. Eclectic meets a seriously well run bar. This team knows their bevies. And then there is the divine Ms Coco who runs the shop. Magnificent. Go visit.

Highly reliable for a quirky cool atmosphere, a committed Landlord, often great music with national and local musicians example: Heti & Hope ; ) calling in from time to time. Food and drink always available with the added craft beer and some house concoctions. Outdoor area, a place to sit in Sunny weather, always a bonus and certainly worth a visit.

Nice area to remember our servicemen , picnic area , great views over whanganui & out to Mt Ruapehu on a clear day , just above library & gallery

Big open area on a hill with good views over the city and if the hill suburbs. Has two of the city libraries with WiFi for both Notebooks and mobile. Parking and toilets when libraries are open. The museum lies to me corner along with a Children's library and The Davis Theatre and the War Memorial Area. Be careful if the pigeons which nest on the Palm tree tops. Close to downtown, river walks and the Saturday markets.

Went for a spontaneous family dinner, was seated right away and served not 10 minutes after our orders were taken . We have a picky 8 year old that loves the fish and chips , a 10 year old that fell in love with the roast beef , I also had me some beef and the mrs was served the biggest freshest seafood basket we have seen in a long time . Our hostess was awesome and the portions are nice . All in all best place we've been to in Wanganui for a long time

Lovely old building with great space and perfect for groups. Staff very friendly and service was good. However, they need to up their game with the food. I can't vouch for the whole menu but my salad was very below par. I'm sure they can do better.

Not gonna lie, best steak I have had in a hot while. Expectations were exceeded. Staff were wonderful, food was faultless. I had scotch fillet [medium] cooked to perfection. Opted for veges so cheese cauli, cabbage, peas carrots, a roast potato and a scoop if mashed potato, added an egg.... perfection. Not sure what this building used to be but it reeked of Whanganui history. Had to post before and after photos lol. Well done Brick House ... Five Stars

Had a Roast Beef meal on the 7th Sep Meat a bit tough not sliced nicely. Not much gravy for such a good size meal. Service very good were very busy. Loved the sticky date pudding. Meal served a bit cold. But maybe because they were so busy. Probably won't be back.

Got to hand it to The Brick house they never disappoint. Many occasions we have come here to enjoy good quality homely style meals and it's always worth it. From there $10 breakfast menu which is of course plentiful, to the lunch menu and then dinner. All very affordable prices in my opinion whether you wanting to do a function or enjoy a date night with a loved one. Grab a bite to eat with a friend or colleague they got ya covered there at the brickhouse. Staff are super friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere is lively even when it's a busy time of the day. Gorgeous style to the place and there's plenty of places to sit and enjoy your meals. Child friendly I celebrated my 30th here 3 years ago and had my niece and nephews and they let them play and enjoy themselves as well. There's the option of making a meal a half size because they are very big portions which is great, an entire kids menu as well.

Unfortunately we had to vacate our table as there was a 7pm booking. Our reservation was for 5.30pm. It would have been better if the other party has been booked for 7.30 as that would have given us two hours for the meal and we wouldn't have felt unimportant and rushed. We drove from Bulls which is 40 km away for a 70th birthday dinner and admittedly we're 10 minutes late but an hour and a half just wasn't enough time even if we were bang on time. The food was excellent and the staff friendly. Just a shame we were not given enough time to enjoy the meal.
