Extremoz in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Extremoz, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Extremoz offers easy access to some of Rio Grande do Norte’s most striking coastal scenery, including the famous Genipabu dunes and lagoons, known for buggy rides and sweeping views over the Atlantic. The area’s beaches, such as Barra do Rio and Pitangui, combine warm waters with a laid-back, small-town feel just north of Natal. Inland, you’ll find coconut groves, freshwater lagoons and simple local restaurants serving regional seafood. The town also has a modest historic core, including the Igreja Matriz de São Miguel de Extremoz, reflecting its colonial-era roots.
With favorites like Pitangui Lagoon, Barramar Santa Rita, and Lagoa de Pitangui Bar e Restaurante, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Lagoa de Pitangui Bar e Restaurante and Barramar Santa Rita so you can get the best taste of Extremoz while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Aquarium
Zoos & Aquariums
Aquário Natal is a modern and compact aquarium that offers an educational and entertaining experience for visitors of all ages. It showcases a variety of marine species, including touch tanks, penguins, and native fish like piranhas. Upon entering, a guide provides insights into the specimens' habits and backstories, some of which are rescued animals being prepared for reintroduction to their natural habitat. The aquarium also features terrestrial mammals, birds, and reptiles.
There's a small entrance fee and as soon as you get inside, a guide will explain about the specimens and their habits and backstory - some are rescued animals, many are getting prepared to be reintroduced to their natural habitat. There are several species represented, including terrestrial mamals, birds and reptiles. After the initial tour you are free to roam and revisit any animals you wish. There's the "touch tank" and a "mermaid" show every weekend. There's a gift kiosk and a picture booth on the tour path, and outside there's a gift shop and a snack bar. There's also a big parking lot structure.

A good place to go with the kids. A nice selection of animals, but could maybe also be some more from other continents. It’s larger than it seems from outside. Could get some maintenance. Wish they would sell some drinks or small food inside, because now you need to leave the place to buy drinks or food.
Petter R — Google review
A nice little aquarium, that also houses different species of animals. It can use a little bit more maintenance and cleaning, but overall, a fun place to visit.

Nice place lots to see more of a zoo than a Aquarium
Graeme/ B — Google review
This is the saddest zoo i’ve been to in my life. I don’t leave reviews often, but i feel like i had to share my experience. So many of the animals showed signs of distress. Little to no effort put in to their cages and some fish and reptiles were to be found dead in their cages or aquarium

Kind of a Aquarium/zoo combo The exhibits are decent. Didn't care for all the tourist trapping. Make sure to pay with reis to skip the line.

Was surprised to see land animals too. Overall a great experience for the price. Staff were really friendly and informative too.
Dell H — Google review
The aquarium is very nice. The presence of a tour guide aggregates a lot as he gives interesting information about the animals present in the aquarium (which is not restricted to ocean life, FYI). All money spent buying souvenirs is reverted to the aquarium/animals care. The only negative point is that is very, very hot inside it. There are no air-conditioned or ventilators.

This is an excellent place to relax and have something to eat or have a drink. very relaxing..
Jeffery B — Google review
Loved this stop on our buggy tour. Great place to get out of the sun and cool off. Enjoyed the live music and food/drinks in the water. Slightly concerned about the sanitary state of the entire situation.
Seth G — Google review
Stunning natural pool, very well maintained beach in the dunes.
Mila C — Google review
Wonderful place to visit. The water is not super clear, but there are many school of fish there. If you drop some food in the water, you'll have them swimming right at you. I wish they had more hammocks inside the water for patrons. The coconut water was very cold, and the pastel was well stuffed. The water is a zero entry lake, so its not salty water and kids can play on the shallow end. There little playground for kids. Absolutely not accessible to disabled people.

Nestled alongside the stunning Lagoa de Pitangui, Lagoa de Pitangui Bar e Restaurante offers a unique dining experience where you can easily take a refreshing dip in the lagoon and return to your table. This popular spot tends to get bustling, especially when buggy tours stop by for lunch. While the food may not be extraordinary, the vibrant atmosphere and picturesque surroundings make it a delightful place to unwind after some fun in the water.

The bar right next to the lagoon, no problem to swim and then return to the table. Mostly crowded as all the buggy tours come here for lunch. The food is just ok, nothing special.

This charming restaurant boasts a delightful atmosphere and serves some of the finest cuisine in the area, making it perfect for families looking to enjoy a meal together. While there may be times when service can take longer than expected, the quality of food and ambiance more than make up for it.
Way off the tourist path but has some of the best food in Natal with a great atmosphere. Family friendly.
