Maponya Mall

Shopping mall
Maponya Mall is a bustling shopping center located in Soweto, known for its diverse range of stores, dining options, and entertainment facilities. It stands as a testament to the development in the township, being the first to have a full-service mall. The mall offers easy access and ample parking, with a clean and well-maintained environment. Visitors can expect a vibrant atmosphere with people from different backgrounds enjoying the various amenities.
my first time going here but was really nice. well layed out and good parking!
Megan R — Google review
The ongoing conflict between Soweto Taxi Services and e-hailing services is really disruptive, not only for the drivers themselves but also for customers who rely on both services for their transportation needs. Obstruction at the main gate really inconveniences customers who drive in and out of the mall because of the traffic caused by this conflict. It is disappointing to see the management not intervening in anyway about this matter and having its customers bring such matters to their attention and begging for intervention which negatively impacts the mall’s reputation as a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors. May the malls management please step in and ensure safety, improving customer experience, and maintaining good working relationships with all transport service providers.
Zwelihle M — Google review
We ran a few errands and ended up staying for lunch. It’s busy in a familiar, local way—families shopping, teens comparing sneakers, music from a store spilling into the walkway. We liked that the layout makes sense and you don’t lose time hunting for basics. From a café table we people-watched, planned the rest of the afternoon, and voted on dessert we didn’t need. It works as a reset between sightseeing stops, and you leave feeling part of the neighbourhood rhythm.
Robert G — Google review
It's a nice place to be it also depends on what you are looking for.. Clothes, food, accessories...there is plenty of unpaid parking...I would want to review more of your shops with a small reward if that's not a problem.
SIXOLILE F — Google review
Ongoing conflicts between taxi services and e-hailing services can cause accessibility issues. I'm concerned about the mall's maintenance quality
Mfundo N — Google review
The mall is inaccessible. Go shop there at your own risk. It's unfortunate that I have to give a star but this mall doesn't deserve even a single star because of those taxi association fighting uber drivers, we are forced to use a taxi..
Ntuli N — Google review
I honestly do not understand why the management of Maponya mall is allowing taxi drivers to bully us , even when we complain here on Google . They respond with a generic response which is really concerning. my life was threatened by one of those taxi drivers because I was using Uber. I am now scared to go to that mall. The only thing I want is to cancel my gym membership from that mall and I promise I will never set foot into that mall ever again.
Sarah Z — Google review
The expirience i had with the mall,.. was that it was neat ,very smart and decorative,.. was a bit packed but it is very bif to accommodate all of us,.. theres a lot of shops or most shops are there that you can think of,.. and the parking is very big to accommodate us ,.. it is also good for shoping theres lot of clothing stores and food court is big and tidy,..

Thokoza Park

Park
Nature & Parks
Thokoza Park, located in Rockville, Soweto, is a popular green space with various amenities. It features paved footpaths, picnic areas, playgrounds, and a rejuvenated Moroka Dam named after Dr. James Moroka. The park also boasts well-manicured lawns and large leafy trees. Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere while taking a stroll near the famous Regina Mundi Church and observing the birdlife along the way.
Chilled place i love it good for your peace of mind
Proud M — Google review
Thokoza Park is my go-to spot, it’s conveniently located and has a lots of features like picnic spots, benches, a quaint stream, and braai areas. While Thokoza Park offers much, the state of the water stream is a concern. Despite park cleaning efforts elsewhere, the stream unfortunately remains littered. Addressing this through consistent maintenance would significantly enhance the park's overall appeal. The lack of evening lighting in certain areas creates safety concerns, particularly during shorter winter days. Installing well-placed lighting would significantly improve security and encourage broader park use throughout the day. Children using the park are at risk for injury from some of the broken swings. Making their repair a top priority would guarantee that everyone had a fun and safe experience.
Nando G — Google review
This place lost dignity and care. It's dirty, filthy full of rubbish and people drinking alcohol, peeing on grass and trees. Awful
Kiki M — Google review
The park is a true natural beauty, it's just a bit neglected, as some rides are broken and unsafe for young kids. A beautiful place overall, please keep an eye on your young ones and guide them to safer rides
Ncumisa T — Google review
Was a splendid weather, but saw a lot of unpleasing scenerios while there. Like kids smoking Hubble's, cigarettes and drinking alcohol in public which I thought was rude of them. But overall it was a chilled day, met friendly people, had a proper jol with people
XOLANI K — Google review
The park it's self was awesome. However the police that came at 5PM ended the fun family day in a very disturbing manner. Tonight myself and my family go to sleep again not impressed to be South African because of being treated the way we were. The police could have chosen to speak to the community but they chose to carry on like they were moving sheep from the garden.

Historic Sites
Mandela's House, located at 8115 Orlando West in Johannesburg, was once the residence of Nelson Mandela and his family. The house has been transformed into a museum by the Soweto Heritage Trust to showcase the life and legacy of the revered former president. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring Mandela's personal belongings, photographs, and paintings.
Well preserved artifacts and pictures of late South African president and family. The walls bear the marks of the dangers of the circumstances they lived in and the threats they faced. Tour guide was very knowledgeable. The tour evoked a sense of hope for South Africa and the mother continent and a reminder about the resilence of the human spirit.

Well preserved home of Nelson Mandela in Soweto. If you take the guided tour, you'll better understand the history and the items at the house. A must see place for tourists to Johannesburg. Most of area is level but watch for some steps. Toilets available. Tour can take about 30 minutes. Go early to avoid crowds.

Quick Takeaways 🇿🇦 Small but powerful museum located in Soweto, South Africa 🏘️ Situated in a poorer area — infrastructure is basic but authentic 🚗 Best visited with a guide for ease, safety, and local insight 💬 English widely spoken, so communication is easy (Zulu also commonly spoken) 💰 Expect traders and beggars nearby — guides help manage these interactions 🏠 Tiny but well-maintained site packed with information about Mandela and his family 🎓 Student guides are knowledgeable; tipping (10–20 rand) is appreciated but optional 🍴 No café or shop on-site, though local food options (like kota) are nearby ⏱️ Tour lasts about 15 minutes, with time to wander afterward 🙏 Humbling and emotional visit — inspiring to see Mandela’s humble beginnings ✅ Safe overall with sensible precautions; high unemployment (≈30%) explains the informal trading Full Review Nelson Mandela House is a small but fascinating and well-maintained property in Soweto, South Africa. It’s located within a sprawling suburb that ranges widely in living standards — from affluent homes to some of the poorest areas. The house itself sits in one of the less developed sections, so don’t expect polished roads, car parks, or visitor infrastructure. Because of this, visiting with a guide — either as part of a group or privately — is highly recommended. You can certainly go on your own, but a guide makes the experience easier and more relaxed. They can also help you navigate the number of traders, beggars, and street sellers who operate nearby; our guide advised not to engage, which proved sensible. Communication isn’t a problem — English is widely spoken, and if you speak even a little Zulu, that’s a bonus. Once inside the small gated area, everything is smooth and well organised. The property includes the modest house itself, a ticket office, toilet facilities, and a small garden. Despite its size, the museum is packed with fascinating information about Mandela and his family. You can explore at your own pace or take a guided tour — my guide was a university student who was friendly and well informed. While tipping isn’t mandatory, offering 10–20 rand is a kind gesture. There’s no café or full shop on-site, though you can buy small items like books or souvenirs at the ticket booth. For food or drink, you’ll need to leave the site. Having a guide helps here too — they know where to find safe and authentic local food. I tried a kota, a local street snack served from a small shack nearby. It was inexpensive (around £1.50), delicious, and the cook was kind, talkative, and welcoming. The house itself is tiny, and the guided portion of the visit takes about 15 minutes. You can, however, stay longer to read the displays and reflect on the significance of the place. It’s a genuinely humbling experience — to stand where one of the world’s greatest leaders began his journey is unforgettable. At no point did I feel unsafe. The people approaching you are mostly trying to make an honest living in a country with unemployment around 30%, which explains the informal trade and street hustling. While vigilance is sensible, visiting Mandela’s House is perfectly safe and absolutely worth doing.

Small space with a big atmosphere. We stepped through the doorway and it felt like walking into a family album—photos, letters, and everyday objects that make the headlines feel personal. The guide moved at an easy pace and let us linger where something caught our eye. We left the stoep a little quieter than we arrived, with Vilakazi Street humming around us.
Peter M — Google review
Stepping inside feels like opening a family album—framed photos, small personal items, and notes that turn headlines into human moments. Our guide spoke simply and let us linger whenever something caught our eye. I liked that the rooms aren’t overly staged; you can almost imagine footsteps in the passage and a kettle coming to the boil. Back on the stoep, Vilakazi’s chatter felt different once we’d seen the home behind the name. We took a last look at the doorway, swapped a quiet nod with another visitor, and carried that feeling into the rest of the street.
Robert G — Google review
Quick and full of historical facts tour of Modiba's family house. Price was just faire per adults. R180. Furniture preserved to the point we could feel the presence of their owners. The bullets impacts on the walls and on the top of the trash can, made a clear effective impact on this journey. The surroundings were little markets and all sort of souvenirs you can buy on vilakazi street. They're not cheap but it gave us a sense of participation to the local economy so we did not hesitate. So should you. Overall experience great!!

History Museums
The Hector Pieterson Memorial is a museum located at 8287 Khumalo St, dedicated to chronicling the events of the 1976 Soweto student uprising. This historic site is named after its first victim, 12-year-old Hector Pieterson, whose tragic death became an international symbol in the fight against apartheid.
We experienced terrific hours under the guidance of our experienced guide mr. Bheki of Soweto Guided Tours/Muano Tours, who shared a personal testimony about the struggle against apartheid and the years after. A moving story of suffering and overcoming, of not forgetting the pain, of healing reconciliation. Mr. Bheki appeared to be a born storyteller and as a white, Dutch tourist I was drawn into the world from the 1970s and thereafter, while passing by the houses and churches of Nelson and Winnie Mandela and bishop Tutu. Also touching was the symbolism of the Hector Pierson Memorial and its square, plus the shoes on the wall nearby. What a tale to hear! Cycling through the neighbourhood I was also touched by the friendliness of the people on the streets and felt very comfortable being there, contrary to what many may think. This appeared to be the definitive highlight of my SA-trip - apologies to the big 5 :). This is even worth seven stars. Also great was that the organisation arranged a taxi to pick us up and bring us back: driver Chris was nice company who brought us straight into the heart of Soweto.

Didnt go inside the museum. But the information outside is wow. Loved how everything there has a meaning. The trees, the walls, the line, the stones, the water, the paving etc. True artwork. There is this guy who looks like he is not a tour guide but the information he has is too much. He knows everything by head. Wish i could remember his name to recommend him
MUZIWETHU M — Google review
I have nothing bad to say about this site, it was amazing and all so though out and sentimental. We had a guide who described exactly why each little things happened and there was so much thought into the actual museum itself, definitely should visit!

Heavy stuff, but a good addition to your historic experience if you are visiting the Mandela house, which is very close by. Also, a lot of the markets sit right outside of the memorial and give you a chance to experience a lot of the culture in a walkable safe area.

The museum does an incredible job of telling the story of Hector's life and the significance of the 1976 student uprising. The exhibits are well-curated, and the staff are knowledgeable and passionate. A must-visit for anyone interested in South African history and the struggle for freedom. Highly recommended!

I came here early Saturday morning. Before the heap of tourist buses arrives. The museum is really good 👍 I spend almost an hour just taking it all in my own time. You can have a guided tour if you want. I didn't feel the need. It's such a huge historical monument. It's also a very planned layout. If you're a wheelchair user, you'll will not have a problem visiting here. It's incredibly accessible with ramps. Also It's walking distance from the Nelson Mandela house, too. People outside are very friendly and I meet Hectors sister Antoinette!! She does guided tours.
Dayana A — Google review
This part of Soweto is a must visit. The significance of this piece of history to South Africa can not be underestimated. We were lucky enough to be visiting at the time Hector's sister, represented as the girl in that famous photo behind her. Hector's death was the catalyst for change that took another 30 years, sadly.

Dobsonville Mall, nestled in the heart of Johannesburg's Soweto, is a vibrant shopping destination that caters to all your retail desires. As the first mall established in this area, it stands as a testament to local economic growth and development. The recent expansion has transformed it into an impressive space with a plethora of stores including popular names like PNP, Shoprite, and Mr Price.
I couldn't believe my eyes, when I saw my hometown mall three times bigger than it was before. I felt overwhelmed, it was like seeing a favorite place for the first time. A lot have changed, even the number of store is way high. There's more than enough space to move around, there's security and surveillance cameras incase you lose something. Toilets are clean and they offer sanitizers for Hygiene. I had one of the best experiences

Nando's Maponya Mall is a popular Afro-Portuguese eatery that specializes in serving flame-grilled chicken smothered in a zesty chili sauce. This chain restaurant offers a unique dining experience, and customers can enjoy their meals amidst an energetic ambiance. The establishment also hosts various events on its rooftop, including the Basha in Casa event, where visitors can indulge in free beverages while being entertained by talented South African artists like Langa Mavuso.
I really enjoyed my time. I went there with my sister for lunch. When we got there, there was an event on the rooftop. We received a free drink forgot the name. It was a Basha in Casa event. Few SA artists were there including Langa Mavuso as a show stopper. It was such an amazing sunday. A real best belated birthday celebration 🥰🥂

⭐ 1/5 Absolutely pathetic service! This place is a complete disaster and should just shut down. - **No Seating:** Despite there being ample space upstairs, we were told we couldn’t sit there. The staff didn’t bother helping us find a table, leaving us to struggle on our own. - **Terrible Service:** After finally finding a seat, no waiter came to take our order. We had to stand in line *again* just to place an order. - **Food Disappointment:** When the food arrived, it was an even bigger letdown. The portions were tiny—no value for money. The server didn’t even tell us which meal was which. To make it worse, they gave us **no cutlery**! We had to use spoons to cut chicken strips. Moreover the bowl I had ordered was missing the roasted corn as per the menu This was hands down the worst Nando’s experience I’ve ever had. I will *never* return to this place to be treated like this. Avoid at all costs! 🚮

Not so great to be sent away after you spent over R200 on a full chicken meal just because you drinking cranberry juice bought elsewhere, and mind you they DON’T sell cranberry juice in store. It is a quiet big restaurant, compared to other Nando’s’ filling up 2 stories but then no patrons are allowed to dine on the upper storey even when it is packed downstairs, they’d rather put you on the outside tables in cold weather which rather renders it useless

I ordered two quarter chickens with salad and the other with Peri Peri wedges and one garlic roll... Went to do my shopping. So when I came back i couldn't check if my order was fine cause the person that was assisting me approached me with my package so when I was at the door I checked if they put extra sauce in my chicken. Then I only saw that they gave me chips not Peri Peri wedges, only to find out that they didn't give a garlic roll... So when I arrived at work which in protea I saw that this lady didn't give me a garlic roll she just gave me a roll. I regret buying at this Nando's

When you find yourself in Soweto, make sure to add Nexdor to your culinary itinerary. Nestled on the vibrant Vilakazi Street, this lively eatery is a fusion of local culture and modern dining. The name "Nexdor," inspired by a fun night at Sakhumzi Restaurant, cleverly combines "next" and "door," embodying the spirit of community.
I've never had so much happiness in my life. The place is exquisitely wonderful, the setup, staff, food and the music is to die for. My take is the band on Sunday sessions, they specialise in local talent and relatable local genres. The place has a truly South African atmosphere and is extremely classy. It attracts tourists from outside the yard. I would recommend this place to anyone who will visit Vilakazi Street. To date, I still have chills with unforgettably experience. Go have a blast on Sunday sessions...

This place is not what it used to be. They sell almost nothing. 90% of the drinks on the menu were not available. Their food looked hideous and not appetizing at all! To top it off, my friend found a dead roach at the bottom of their glass. The lady that was serving us, looked so depressed and unhappy. Didn't even come to check up on our table at all. The music was depressing and the atmosphere was just not right. We decided to pay and go somewhere else stat! Never again.

A filling mix. Looking for a breakfast, try their omelet. After doing the Mofolo parkrun, we ended up here (Wandies were closed till 11am) and Nexdor was suggested by the manager at Sakhumzi’s. So there we were - only two of us, as Vilakazi Street only gets going much later. It was nevertheless interesting watching the goings on with hawkers unpacking their wares, and our hosts unpacking their umbrellas on the deck. It was fine weather at just Nexdor to Sakhumzi’s. It took a while, but when our omelet arrived, it didn’t have the mix of fillings we asked for but it was nevertheless substantial, well prepared, and at a value price. The waitress did apologise, so accepted the side beacon discounted for the mixup. We left with mixed feelings. Next time, perhaps we’ll try the next door.
Malcolm T — Google review
A small group of us just went into this resturant for coffee and cheese sandwich take out. The resturant was absolutely empty except for us and the food took 20 minutes to receive coffee and 40 minutes for the food to come out. The waitress was laxicazical and mixed up drink orders that that was all literally, coffee and water and a coke. Then the cheese sandwich comes out with no cheese. I send it back, and it takes ten mins for the chefs to put this garbage on my sandwich. I wish I had waited until the end to pay, they would have gotten none of my money for this nonsense. Do not eat here.

Vuyos Restaurant is a success story inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of a township local who turned his passion for creating unforgettable moments and delicious food into an upmarket restaurant and catering service. Located on Vilakazi Street, it offers South African favorites like Boerie and Chips and Malva pudding. The founder's journey began with a mobile vending business selling Boerie rolls under the trademarked name Vuyos, drawing inspiration from a fictional tale in a Hansa Pilsener advert.
Very chilled but vibey place. In the heart of Vilakazi Street, a gem 💎 exists. They served us tasty food and a variety of drinks at very reasonable prices. The service is excellent. The waitrons are very pleasant and eager to serve. The view from the deck is awesome 👌🏿. There is plenty of seating, enclosed and outside. There is no ramp for persons on wheelchairs, no special bathrooms for paraplegic people. There is only one toilet for males and another one for females, which resulted in a queue for the females. The toilets are clean and well serviced. There is also no special/wheelchair friendly parking. In fact, there is no dedicated or special parking for anyone. Parking is along the pavement of Vilakazi which is lined up of businesses and restaurants, and that parking is on first come first served basis.

My partner and I visited Vuyos in Soweto on a Saturday afternoon, drawn in by their seemingly professional and polished website. The images and reviews online promised quality and cleanliness, creating high expectations. However, upon arrival, it was immediately clear that the management and maintenance of the establishment had significantly declined. The stark discrepancy between the website’s portrayal and the reality was disappointing. Despite our initial doubts, we decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the experience only worsened from there. The food was substandard, with the salad - primarily wilted lettuce - appearing unappetizing and possibly reused. The drinks were equally underwhelming; my Soweto Gold craft beer was flat and lacked freshness, reminiscent of a poorly stored Castle Light. The pricing added insult to injury. The bill rivaled what one might expect at a premium establishment like Monte Casino, yet the quality and experience fell woefully short of justifying the cost. Hygiene and presentation were sorely lacking, leaving a lasting negative impression. Regrettably, the consequences of our visit extended beyond the poor dining experience. Both my partner and I suffered severe stomach cramps and diarrhea the following day, with her still feeling very ill even a day and a half later. This raises serious concerns about the restaurant's food safety and hygiene standards. While the restaurant’s location is excellent, it appears to be plagued by severe mismanagement. In light of our experience, I cannot recommend Vuyos. For those considering a dining option in the area, I strongly suggest visiting the restaurant across the street, Sakhumzi, which seems to offer a far more reliable and enjoyable experience. The only reason I gave this review a one-star rating is that the waitress was very helpful, offering a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing visit. I hope this review helps others make an informed decision before choosing to dine at Vuyos.

The vibe to this place is awesome. My guests couldn't stop talking about how amazing the food was. Guys their food is really tasty. Pricing is reasonable and service on point. You won't sit with an empty glass the waiters are on top of things. Matt was awesome and accommodating. I would most be be there again!! Well done Vuyos team!!!

Great place. Food is nice. Excellent service (was served by Precious). Definitely will be going back soon. Had dumplings and meat which was on special. Though I was charged R20 for parking on the side of the road, which was demanded by the car guard (iphara).

Had a lovely experience. Food prices at a slight premium but almost want to say worth it. All dishes were well prepared and thoroughly enjoyed. Would definitely recommend to others and consider going again when in the area. The chef even prepared something special for a birthday girl. Only complaint was some plates that was not properly cleaned /washes before being brought to our table.

Very nice restaurant with good staff. The food could do with a little bit of work, my friend and I both had ribs and wings. The ribs were not really good, that disappointed me and the portion of them don’t deserve to be called ribs. Wings were great! I enjoyed the vibe however the music was to loud, we had to talk so loud in order to overpower the sound. I think the moments where they would switch off we found a bit of relief.

A quaint venue situated along the buzzing Vilakazi Street in Orlando West, directly opposite Sakhumzi Restaurant. Go to this restaurant to experience the thrill of Soweto - the energy is electrifying. While your first drinks order may arrive quickly, expecting efficient service thereafter is a tall ask - there are periods where you’ll be kept waiting for a very long time for staff to attend to you. Similarly, the food isn’t amazing and there isn’t a vast amount of variety on the menu, especially if you aren’t a fan of beef or fatty meat. While there wasn’t a DJ on the day we went, several buskers stream into the venue so there’s a great deal of entertainment on offer. If you want a venue that’s quieter than Sakhumzi, then this venue could work for you. Either way, it’s great seeing Black businesses thriving in the townships and Vuyo’s deserves our support.

Chez Alina’s was a great dining experience after touring Soweto and the Nelson Mandela Museum 07 February 2025! A group of us thoroughly enjoyed lunch which felt like a homecoming. Chicago, Illinois and Houston, Texas USA was in the house. Thanks for the hospitality.

The food was nice and I really enjoyed the trifle. The tables can be more spacious than that because felt that they were a bit crowded. But apart from that I really enjoyed visiting here.

Welcome to Chez Alina, where you can savor the local dishes of Soweto while immersing yourself in the neighborhood's vibrant culture. The restaurant is frequented daily by busloads of tourists eager to experience authentic cuisine in a family-run establishment that has been passed down through generations. The food was excellent, and my party of five finished our meal just before a charter bus arrived, bringing more hungry patrons eager to enjoy the delights of Chez Alina Restaurant.

What a great find! Alina was a tour guide but now opens her home in Soweto to feed tour groups and provide a unique experience. The food was very tasty, with lots of variety. Neighbourhood kids serve the customers, which contributes to their confidence, experience and English language. There were fans keeping the room cool, the bathrooms were clean, and the drinks were well chilled! Having the opportunity to see inside a residential area of Soweto was so much more interesting than the typical tourist restaurants.

For day 2, we recommend exploring the west side side of town. Start the day off with FNB Stadium, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Johannesburg Botanical Gardens. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

FNB Stadium, also known as Soccer City and The Calabash, is a renowned landmark in South Africa. This colossal stadium gained international acclaim as the main venue for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Today, it continues to make history by hosting major concerts, state events, and sports competitions. With a seating capacity of up to 95,000 people, this architectural marvel has become a premier concert destination for both local and international artists.
We went to Calabash 2025 and had a awesome time. Not only was it great to see three great musical acts but the whole event was well organised and the FNB Stadium created just the right atmosphere for such an occasion. The ushers all pointed us in the right direction so no wasted time searching for your seats. Easy access in and out.

Spent over 2 hours stuck in traffic trying to get into the Chiefs vs Sundowns match, very poor planning from those involved. Be prepared to be stuck for another 2 hours after the match. Luckily I left before extra time and was the 3rd row of parking on the road so made it out before the stand still traffic started.
Olatomiwa A — Google review
The biggest stadium in Africa! Yup it’s huge! Went here for the Travis Scott concert. Everything is actually very well organised in terms of management, security and seating. For the music concert, there was an abundance of food stalls available. This entire opinion is based off my personal experience at massive music concert with over 70k fans but it was very well organised. Parking however can be a nightmare and it can take a very long time to enter/exit the designated parking areas. I wish the stadiums roof had the ability to close because if it rains you are going to get soaked. Overall, it’s a fantastic and massive stadium that is known for hosting iconic sporting and music events. I’m happy I finally got to see it in person.

TRAVIS SCOTT CONCERT WAS OFF THE CHARTS. IT WAS FIRE 🔥 🔥 NOT EVEN THE RAIN OR THE DELAY HAMPERED MY SPIRIT. ONCE THAT MAN GOT ON THE STAGE, BONAAAA, ALL MY ANXIETY DISAPPEARED. SO GLAD I GOT TO WITNESS THIS IN MY LIFETIME WITH MY LOVELIFE BY MY SIDE
Mpho M — Google review
We arrived early and just stood for a minute taking in the calabash glow—it's one of those places that feels big even before you find your seats. Once the stands started filling, the energy rolled in waves: drums, vuvuzelas, people in colours, and that buzz that makes you grin before kickoff. We kept pointing out little details—the roof line, the patterns on the bowl—and then the teams came out and the noise lifted. Inside, everything felt smooth: easy to find our block, friendly staff, decent food queues. We spent halftime just watching the stadium breathe, crowd chants echoing, lights washing the pitch, kids dancing in the aisles. Walking out after the final whistle, voices were hoarse and everyone was smiling. Big, loud, and surprisingly warm—one of those nights that sticks.

Good stadium to accommodate supporters more especial when is Kaizer Chiefs against other opponent FNB Stadium is the best.
Linda K — Google review
Stunning Stadium, there's food and drinks on each level so you won't walk far. As well as restrooms. Had the best time while there for CB and TS concerts.
Randy K — Google review
As a South African, this stadium is where all your most biggest concert memories are made. I've seen artists like Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Foo Fighters, Guns and Roses, and so many more. Usually, they make you walk incredibly far, as the drop-off zones are usually extremely far for some reason. The lines to drinks are always extremely long, and I've missed some opening acts because of this. The management is okay, and the bathrooms are usually fairly clean because they cleaners are constantly busy there.

Specialty Museums
The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa, offers a comprehensive look at the country's 20th-century history and the now-defunct apartheid system. The museum features exhibits such as 'The Pillars of the Constitution,' which symbolize the values enshrined in South Africa's constitution. Visitors can explore the apartheid era through a variety of mediums including photos, artifacts, newspaper clippings, personal accounts, and film footage.
An exceptional museum. Very well curated. This museum is designed as a journey - it tells a difficult and painful story through powerful content, images, and videos. It’s also incredibly inspiring. Change is possible! Highly recommend. I arrived right as they opened at 9am and had the entire museum to myself for most of my visit.
Theresa — Google review
The Apartheid Museum is one of Johannesburg’s most important landmarks, offering a powerful and moving journey through South Africa’s history. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, guiding visitors through the story of apartheid with honesty, depth, and impact. It’s an educational experience that lingers long after you leave, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking to understand the country’s past and its path to reconciliation. Beyond the exhibits, the building itself is striking and picturesque — its architecture blends raw concrete, steel, and open spaces in a way that feels both symbolic and visually compelling. The design amplifies the weight of the history inside while also providing moments of reflection. The Apartheid Museum is as much a place of learning as it is of remembrance, and its setting makes the experience all the more profound.
Paul L — Google review
Quick Takeaways 🏛️ Impressive, modern museum documenting South Africa’s apartheid era 📍 Located in Ormonde, Johannesburg — adjacent to Gold Reef City 🚗 Safe, accessible area with ample parking and good transport links (car, taxi, bus, or guided tour) 💬 Everyone speaks fluent English; signage and staff communication are easy 🕊️ Immersive exhibits tell South Africa’s story from apartheid’s origins to its abolition 📽️ Powerful use of artefacts, videos, and photography — deeply emotional and thought-provoking 🧭 Layout can be confusing — follow the large vertical black signs to stay on route ☕ Good café with friendly staff and outdoor seating; local food and wildlife nearby 🛍️ Gift shop is overpriced but offers quality books, clothing, and standard souvenirs ⏱️ Allow 1–2 hours to visit fully 🙏 A sobering, essential experience that powerfully portrays South Africa’s long struggle for freedom ⸻ Full Review The Apartheid Museum is a striking and modern site that powerfully documents one of the darkest yet most defining periods in South African history. Located in Ormonde, Johannesburg, beside Gold Reef City, the area is relatively safe for tourists — especially during the day. While Johannesburg does have a reputation for crime, this particular location is well policed and well maintained. It’s accessible by car, taxi, bus, or tour, and at no point did I feel unsafe. I wouldn’t say there are zero risks — as with any large city, awareness is important — but tourist-related crime here is very low. If you drive, there’s ample, clearly marked parking only a short walk from the entrance. Ticketing is straightforward, with friendly staff who all speak fluent English, and prices are reasonable. From the very beginning, the museum immerses you in the ideology of segregation that defined apartheid. The entrance itself symbolically separates visitors by race — an immediate and sobering reminder of the injustice at the system’s core. From there, the exhibits guide you chronologically through apartheid’s origins, enforcement, resistance, and eventual dismantling. The displays are rich and varied, using a mix of artefacts, documents, photographs, films, and oral histories to tell the story. The presentation is impactful and emotional, with several areas that are genuinely moving. Many visitors — myself included — found certain sections deeply affecting, with some visibly in tears. The layout can be a little confusing, so make sure to follow the large black vertical signs to avoid missing key parts of the exhibition. Most of the museum is indoors, though there are a few outdoor installations, a small garden area, and a café with outside seating. If it rains, it won’t impact the experience, as the majority of the exhibits are housed inside. The café, though modest in appearance, serves good coffee and light snacks. The staff are friendly and happy to chat — one told me about the locally sourced food and the wildlife around the site, sparked by a conversation about weaver birds nesting above the café seating area. The gift shop is perhaps the weakest part of the experience — it’s expensive, but it does stock a good range of high-quality books, clothing, and South African-themed accessories, alongside the usual souvenirs. Overall, the Apartheid Museum is a must-visit. It’s emotional, educational, and unforgettable. You can easily spend one to two hours here, though you might linger longer if you want to take everything in. It’s a sobering reminder of how far South Africa has come — and a testament to the resilience, pain, and triumph of those who fought for freedom.
MilPoPo — Google review
What a great experience, and a sobering one too. We moved through the galleries slowly, reading, listening, and letting the story build room by room. The way the exhibits are laid out—photos, film, letters, everyday objects—makes it feel personal and real rather than distant history. We barely spoke for long stretches; it’s one of those places that asks you to pay attention and you do. Outside and in the open spaces we took a few breaths, looked back at the steel and concrete lines of the building, and felt the weight of it all in a good way—honest, necessary, human. We left quiet and thoughtful, grateful we’d made the time. It’s not a quick stop, but it’s the one we’ll remember.
Bradley S — Google review
I visited the Apartheid Museum during my short stay in Johannesburg. The museum was interesting, but it didn’t quite meet my expectations. There weren’t as many historical artifacts or organized exhibits as I had hoped. Still, I’m glad I had the chance to visit and learn more about South Africa’s history. The entrance fee was 170 South African rand as of October 18, 2025.
Anar G — Google review
Absolutely worth a visit. Very well done. Stop to read and learn. I also watched all videos along the route. Ended up spending 4 hours in the museum. Excellent work by the organisers.
Mia K — Google review
Buckle up for +1h of deep dive into the story of South African human foolishness way of thinking and treating pairs as folk... The museum immerse the visitors so well that at the end you may feel the weights of those stories and appreciate the efforts made to tell them. We highly recommend this stop when you're in Jozy.
Anicet J — Google review
We were educated and moved by the museum's displays, and wish we'd had more time there even after spending 5 hours. Thought provoking doesn't capture it. The museum grapples with one of humanity's greatest challenges and displays how flawed we are in relating to and loving each other, and at the same time hope we collectively can make a difference and become better.

Johannesburg Botanical Gardens is a sprawling 125-hectare park that offers a diverse range of gardens, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts. The park boasts an impressive collection of trees, including rare and perennial varieties, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the natural beauty of South Africa without leaving the city.

The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens offer a tranquil and serene environment — perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape. The garden areas are clearly marked, and the dedicated trails for runners are thoughtfully designed to minimize disturbance to visitors enjoying nature at a slower pace. There’s ample seating and well-maintained grassy spaces throughout the park, making it ideal for picnics and relaxation. However, I’m giving three stars due to the parking experience. Unfortunately, many visitors park without any sense of order, which can make finding a spot frustrating. The car guards on site seem to lack the authority or structure to manage this effectively, leaving the parking area feeling somewhat chaotic and insecure. I think local donations for the various flower beds would be great, there isn’t a specifically diverse range of flowers.

SUCH A DISAPPOINTING TIME. when you have been to the botanical gardens 🏡 n Durban and you come to this botanical garden in jhb you would think there would be beauty as along the roads many homes have better outside gardens than this place. Lots of trees, even a weed has become a tree which made us roar with laughter. The only flower we saw was one bush of stralitzers and a little water feature. Rather call it a park and put swings and slides for the kids there bec of you going to look at the flowers, sorry there aren't any.

Excellent food well prepared at excellent prices, great service with a good vibe. The owner takes great pride in her restaurant and goes so far to be head chef in her very own kitchen. Her cooking is beyond exceptional. Went there twice (once for supper and again the following day for brunch) and thoroughly got way more than expected. They also have daily specials and some of them are extraordinary. I highly suggest if you are looking for a great meal you pay this place a visit, you will not be disappointed. Highly recommended.

Came here for quiz night and had a decent time. They bring you some starter chips free of charge and the food was quite good. The main issue was that our server was very slow and forgot to bring us a few drinks and then ended up bringing us too many and what came on our bill ended up not being what we ordered. The restaurant is quite small and separated from the bar so it makes the vibe a bit strange as it feels like three distinct areas. The decor is nice and I enjoyed my visit but don’t think ill be rushing back.

Ntsitsis FUN Foods is a family-owned fast-food spot located in the Diepkloof neighborhood, just 20 minutes from Soweto. It's renowned for its Soweto-style kotas, which are essentially quarter loaves of bread filled with potato fries, Russian sausages, meat and veggie stew, cheese, mango atchar, and various other toppings. With over 50 variations on the menu, this street stall has become a favorite among both locals and tourists.
Easily top 3 best kotas in Joburg. You have to make a stop at Ntsitsi’s if you are looking for that original/traditional kota taste. I ordered a kota while my wife and son had a sly, all on point and zero compromise on quality.
Kgothatso S — Google review
The struggle is real.... You order Kota and wait for it 45 minutes whilst the staff takes orders from their friends telephonically whilst sitted there waiting and these ladies there are so very unbothered by this no matter how much one tries to correct them. I live in the North, and I still appreciate having a good Kota in Soweto but when you call to order, there's no response however you get there you see the staff on phone taking orders with their personal phones. They are extremely unprofessional.
Thando N — Google review
Just to verify the reviews I've read about Ntsitsi Fun Foods, I went try it out for myself. Hmmm, as I enjoy my Kota. I was deliberately vague in my order, I changed my mind too many times, but the attendant was very friendly and helped me with suggestions. They have a wide variety of kotas, a wide selection of what to put in your kota to make it interesting. They got my order right and in less than 15mins as expected. The place is wheelchair friendly, there is a chill place while you wait, cool music in the background, not sure where it was coming from but it was not blurring. Lots of parking space across the road.
Hilda P — Google review
Spoke to them to confirm if they have a menu online and two minutes later, no answer till I had to drive there and obviously wait 30 minutes for an order. To top it off, their prices online are totally different to the actual price. Gear up on the service 🙏

In a time of gourmet Kotas which can sometimes be unnecessary this place still makes the best traditional Kota just the way it used to be done, I buy the slice one every time. Fresh quality ingredients. Expect to wait 20 - 30mins for your Kota.

The food is great. Always fresh food. Sometimes service may be slow but it is worth it. The atmosphere is more of a takeaway area but there is space to relax and eat. Cars pass by the area hence I gave the atmosphere 4 out 5.

This place was absolutely amazing. We went there on a Friday night looking to just unwind and relax. We got just that and more. The receptionist was friendly and welcoming. Our waiter was so friendly and helpful. She assisted us with the menu (as it is digital). The food was out of this world. We ordered some platter for 4 ppl. The meat was tender and tasty. The chips were finger licking good. There was some funky group performing that night. They lit the place up. All in all, my experience there was over the top. Our waitress was amazing right through our time there. It was an honor parting with our money to tip her.

I would like to say how disappointed in this establishment for selling counterfeit Partagas No. 4 cigars and the manager on duty blatantly lying and saying it is not Fake?! Never again will I purchase a cigar at this establishment. Nonetheless, the service and atmosphere is top notch

Shopping mall
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Soweto, Jabulani Mall has been a shopping haven since its grand opening on October 26, 2006. This bustling destination boasts an impressive array of 109 stores, including the only Game store in Soweto, catering to diverse tastes and preferences. Known affectionately as "the people's mall," it offers a delightful food court filled with both sit-down dining options and fast-food favorites.
One of the friendliest mall in Deep Soweto,, everything you need, you will find. My kids loves the restaurant as it has a big playground......

Beautiful and open mall with a variety of stores. Gets pretty packed during month end weekends and it can be a hassle to do your shopping around those time. Decent toilets they are clean, the mall is also generally clean. Parking speaker is enough unless you want to park near the mall entrance. Great selection of fast food chains, clothing shops and everything in between.

Properly located for the community and looks very busy. I just feel the security needs to be improved with access control. The place is too crowded with most of the people being outside of the shops than inside.

Since I started to deliver food at kfc Jabulani Mall using uber eats app I’ve never undermined and dissatisfied and disappointed like today (23/04/2025)I got this order DFFE8 instead of giving me order for the customer manager said I can’t get it when I asked she said it’s not showing that you’re inside then I tried to advise her that update your delivery tablet because it’s functioning slow then she start shouting to me or being hash and I didn’t get that order.order was delaying and customer was also complaining because app was adding time while order is ready.kfc must update their delivery tablet because it’s only happening in Jabulani mall kfc other restaurants it’s fine and they must respect drivers because we are representing customers.

I had the worst experience in all pick n pay since I have started my working life, employee called Zoleka Dlamini with gold teeth and light in complexion, work at the vegetables section harrassed me to the point I almost cried when I talked to customer service manager to report her I work nightshift and I went to the store in the morning around 8am or 8:40, 28 Jun 2025, I didn't sleep the whole night and I was tired trying to by some vegetables, first she blocked my way as I was trying to pass her and at first I didn't realise she was trying to start a fight, this happened around 8:20am I guess and date 28 Jun 2025 plz check camera at the vegetables section I never minded her as she was blocking my way just looking at me and I went around another isle to grab some tomatoes, I was caring two vegetables plastic bags the one you take in the shop to put some vegetables inside them for scale, As I was leaving the isle she yelled at me that I should leave the other plastic bag, I was confused and asked her to repeat the question and then I told her even though Im moving away from the vegetables section Im still shopping and she doesn't know if Im still thinking about what I should buy She kept on yelling for me to leave the plastic bag and I told her to follow me if she really wants me to leave the vegetables scale plastic bag As I was shopping she apparently told security that Im a thief and after I have paid my groceries as I was leaving I was ambushed by 3 security personal accusing me of stealing, it was such an embarrassment as 2 of my work mates were in the store and everyone was looking at me being accused of stealing All this for a free plastic bag we use to scale/weight vegetables and arrogant employee Zoleka Dlamini who looks people at the face to see if she can take advantage of them, she is arrogant, Incompetent and after arriving at home I couldn't sleep because I was traumatized, I had to go back to the store to speak with manager and I felt way better even though they tried to cover for her, I knocked off at 8am and now is 1pm no sleep as Im truamatized and Monday I will call head office to take this further

Located in Jabulani, Soweto, the iconic Soweto Theatre is a hub of diverse activities such as fashion shows, musical performances, and works by renowned playwrights like Athol Fugard. The adventurous design of three cubed-shaped buildings adds to its allure. Celebrating 10 years of storytelling and operation in 2022, the theatre offers panoramic views of Soweto and houses a museum showcasing the township's history.
We went for the 7 Colours festival and it was fantastic! The facility (Soweto Theatre) is in immaculate condition. The entrance has a massive stretch tent making the area optimal for hosting events outside. The outside toilets were clean and even though there was no water, they organized ladies to hand out water buckets to people to use the toilets. There's a safe play area for the kids. The gardens are well maintained, there's plenty of spacious parking and security at the gate. The place is safe and a real gem for the arts in the community.

The red cubes pull you in from a distance, and up close the place feels welcoming. We arrived early, wandered the forecourt, and chatted to staff who were happy to point us to seats and answer questions about the programme. Inside, the sightlines are kind and the sound sits right—close enough to feel the performance without losing comfort. After the show we lingered outside, soaking up the after-performance buzz as people compared favourite moments. It feels like a community space with polish, and we left talking about what we’d come back to see next.

The production of Have you seen Zandile was phenomenal. Cast and crew really performed well. The theatre is so beautiful and spacious. The staff were friendly, except the ones at the refreshment station. The security guard refused to allow us to park the car at the Accessible parking bay. Dimpho and her team made up for the terrible attitude from the security guard, and we were very happy in the end.

Shopping mall
Nestled along the bustling R558 and Protea Boulevard, Protea Glen Mall stands as a vibrant hub for the local community in Soweto. This modern shopping destination features a mix of well-known retailers, including both Pick n Pay and Shoprite, making it a go-to spot for all your grocery needs. The mall is designed to cater to its close-knit neighborhood, allowing residents to enjoy shopping without venturing far from home.
Great shopping experience overall! The main entrance does get quiet congested especially during peak time. The mall itself I can't really fault, they have a wide variety of offerings. Was able to get helium for balloons from Afripack which is such a scarcity!
Buyiswa T — Google review
Worst Shopping Experience Ever, Was There Literally Yesterday With My Family, My Wife Wanted To Quickly Change Our Daughter's In The Family Room Opposite Vodacom, But Unfortunately She Was Denied Access, And Apparently Centre-Management Has Informed The Cleaners Not To Open For The General Public(Customers). We Generally Know That The People Handling The Property Do Not Care About The General Public, But Not In That Manner...... Would Definitely Not Advise Anyone With A Family To Go There.
TSHEPISO M — Google review
It is a good place. They just ruin things by trying to be too expensive and not have many options at the same time. Like can your prices increase when your stock is diverse and inclusive? (most stores, respectfully)
Relebohile L — Google review
There is no shopping at peace here, this mall is always full of people regardless if it's during the week or any other day. They should have just said this was a shopping complex coz it's too small to be considered a mall. Imagine the whole of Protea Glen depending on this complex for shopping...yep it's a nightmare. Considering how big Protea Glen is and how rapidly it's expanding, they deserve a proper mall.
Khuthadzo M — Google review
Poor! Both pick n pay and shoprite have no sugar free drinks, " we didn't receive our stock" Pathetic if you ask me!

All major banks available, clothing, food, furniture, food outlets available to name a few. It's a very nice, peaceful ✌️ and safe place for shopping.

Walter Sisulu Square, located in Kliptown, South Africa, is a vibrant area that offers a glimpse into the township's entertainment history. It is known as the country's first township entertainment center and features a chisa nyama where people gather and socialize. The square also houses the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication, which is home to various shops, galleries, and traders offering an array of goods.
We read the clauses of the Freedom Charter set into the stone and then watched the square get on with its day—taxis edging in, kids weaving through the arcades, elders greeting each other at the corners. Inside the museum the timeline is clear and compact, adding layers without overwhelming. When we came back out, the sun had shifted and the paving caught the light. We found a bit of shade and sat for a few minutes just watching the movement. It’s a lived-in space with history underfoot.
Robert G — Google review
It breaks my heart to see a place so full of our history and heritage look the way it does. It's like a dying corpse in the midst of a dark valley swimming in poverty. How is it that our elders/government knows how to spend money on expensive nonsensical things, but refuses to revamp heritage sites. It just angers me and sets my blood boiling. The Freedom Charter remains as a lost paper to a corrupt government that forget that hunger causes a lot of anger and one day the people will stop begging and start storming their high walls and send them to the Gallatin. It's absolutely disgusting.
Nontokozo Z — Google review
Wonderful concept that has been left to be destroyed. There was a local artist that was talented and has good work.
Chadwick B — Google review
Such a sad state, this beautiful monument to our freedom and democracy has been vandalized and trashed. Surrounded by litter, it reflects the current state of our government and leadership. A real shame.
Lynn C — Google review
A genuine public space layered with history. We read the Freedom Charter clauses set in the paving, then just watched daily life flow around the square—taxis, kids, small traders. It feels lived-in rather than packaged, which I appreciated. The adjacent museum adds useful context in a compact format. Facilities are basic but fine, and locals we met were friendly. It’s a short, meaningful stop that pairs well with a Soweto day.
Ryan M — Google review
Quite interesting history even though they don't do enough advertising for the area but that's one place that all kids leaving around Soweto should know and understand what Walter Sisulu Square came about
Muzi M — Google review
The flame was out, but its ideas burn on. The Freedom Charter Monument is part of the Walter Sisulu Square (also referred to as Freedom Square) with The Soweto hotel providing an interesting architectural flank to the one side. The monument is a cone shaped building with the 10 core Freedom Charter statements (adopted in 1955) in a circle where a flame was ignited when the building was commemorated. One door looks out over Kliptown and is particularly dramatic when seen at sunset. Don’t forget to look up and see the cross in the roof structure. On leaving we reflected that the flame may be out for now, but the ideas of the Charter certainly burn on in the hearts and minds of most South Africans. Certainly worth a visit.
Malcolm T — Google review
The memorial tower with the 10 chapters of the freedom charter worth a visit. However, the whole area very neglected and dirty. Why the residents of Soweto take so little pride in their history is a mistery to me.

SOWETO TOWERS

Bungee jumping center
Paintball center
Soweto Towers, located in Orlando, Soweto, is an iconic site featuring twin 33-storey cooling towers adorned with vibrant murals. Adventure seekers can experience the ultimate adrenaline rush by bungee jumping from a platform suspended between the two towers. For those seeking even more thrills, options include a straitjacket bungee jump and a suspended catch air device (SCAD) freefall inside one of the towers.
I went to Soweto Towers for a bungee jump and it was nothing short of amazing! From the moment I arrived, the staff were incredibly friendly, supportive, and full of positive energy. Their encouragement made the experience even more thrilling, and I felt completely safe throughout the entire process. The atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming, and their professionalism really stood out. I loved every single moment - it’s something I’ll never forget. If you’re thinking about doing it, stop thinking and just go for it! You won’t regret it.
Cherine W — Google review
The colorful towers beckon from afar: "Wow, art!" you think - until the dazzling facade turns out to be a giant advertising poster. Bungee jumping awaits at the top, accessible via a rope ladder that looks more like a game show than safe. Inside: A beer garden - quite nice, but 20 Rand entry just to be allowed to buy beer? Oh well. Everything feels like a marketing event that relies more on likes than on real experiences. Three out of five stars - for fans of painted advertising, beer and adrenaline.
Tilman B — Google review
Distinctive landmarks in Soweto. Artwork is ever changing advertising but it is bright and colourful. Used to be coal power stacks (which are still used in other parts of Joburg). I didn't personally bungee jump but enjoyed and was freaked out watching two strangers do so from the bridge between the two towers. I've never bungee jumped before but the price looked cheaper than I've seen elsewhere in the world.
Timeshare C — Google review
We rolled up to the painted cooling towers and the colour hits you first—huge murals against the sky, music drifting from the plaza, people cheering as someone counts down for a jump. We grabbed coffees, found a spot near the base, and just watched for a while. Even without jumping you feel the buzz: harness clicks, a moment of quiet, then a shout and laughter floating back down. Cameras out, then pockets again, because it’s just as good to stand there and take it in. After a bit we wandered the perimeter for photos and kept pointing out new details in the artwork. Kids posed, a drone zipped by, and locals waved us into frame once or twice. The whole place has an easy, friendly energy—industrial bones turned into a meeting spot. We left with paint-streaked skylines on our phones and that light, happy feeling you get when a simple stop turns into a memory.
Peter M — Google review
Had so much fun, did the free fall off the Soweto towers and then had lunch there. Wow a real incredible experience and delicious food I didn't even manage to get any photos of the food 😂😋 it was that good!!!
Bianca M — Google review
The towers hit you first—bright murals against big sky—and then the plaza energy kicks in: music, food smells, people filming jumps on their phones. We grabbed coffees, found a spot near the base, and watched the countdowns and laughter bounce around the concrete. Even without jumping, you feel part of it. We wandered the perimeter for photos and kept finding new details in the artwork. Locals waved us into frame and offered angles we’d have missed. It’s industrial bones turned into a meeting place, and it leaves you smiling.
Robert G — Google review
Cool place, you can jump on buggy, ride quads, play paintball or take advantage of 50m free fall. But even if you do not want to raise your adrenaline, you can use the observation deck on the tower, which makes a great impression - a beautiful view of the city skyline.
Pawel C — Google review
The Soweto Towers are one of those landmarks you recognise instantly, even from far away. Up close they are even more striking, with all the artwork and colour. If you are into extreme activities, the bungee and other adventure options will definitely get your heart racing. Even if you do not jump, just being in that space and watching other people do it is an experience on its own. Around the towers there’s usually music, food, and people hanging out. It has a chilled, social vibe where you can grab something to eat, take photos and soak up the atmosphere. It is an easy place to combine with a Soweto tour or lunch in the area.

Eish. This place doesn't look too good from the outside. Also the environment is somewhat not conducive but the hotel itself is quite nice and the staff are courteous. I wish there is a way the surrounding area can be brushed up to have a more serene look so that one does not have to keep looking behind ones shoulder when driving to and fro there.

Guys I’m not happy with your service o orders breast with lemon & herb sauce and spicy rice with Nandos relish your meat was not sauced up at all it was dry with no sauce why though? I’m so irritated 😣

Customer service was good, ordered the spicy rice with chicken strips and veggies and the only vegetable I could find on my plate was carrots, rice was a bit under cooked but otherwise it was good enjoyed the churros very much.

Though recently renovated just before the pandemic, they have not lost their sense of service and chicken well prepared for the times i have recently visited, I would give them 7 out of 10 for the need to observe social distancing, sure they will get it write soon. I can definitely suggest for anyone looking to visit Nando's restaurant after the easing of the lock down level 2 to give them a visit.

Day 4

Keep it simple
For day 4, these 5 places should be enough to fill your day with something exciting to do in Soweto. Start the day with Zone 6 Venue and make your way through the city to get to Regina Mundi Catholic Church. This should take about 8 hours of your day.

Event venue
Zone 6 Venue is a two-story, swanky space that has hosted performances by renowned artists like Mobb Deep, Jean Grae, and Pharoahe Monch. The venue boasts state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems, a spacious stage, an outdoor deck, and a luxurious pool area. One side of the venue features a concert setup with a large hall and main stage, while the other side offers a club setup with tables and chairs.
If you wanna have a secure fun entertaining place for a night out on weekend in Soweto this is your first class go check it out. A home ground to Black Coffee.
Andrew M — Google review
The place is nice. The toilets are not in the best condition. The upstairs toilets had no water when we were there and we had to go downstairs where the queue was way too long.
Mathapelo M — Google review
I truly enjoyed being here, but a couple of things I found ridiculous, 1 during an event, there's no pass outs, 2 hooked pipes are expensive, 450 for 1 coal is observed. Not for many people also, the place has a potential to be luxurious it needs good attention.
Angel T — Google review
The vibe is great, they have ample space for big events. One side has a concert setup (big hall with a main stage) and the other has a club setup (tables & chairs available). They have 4 stars because I attended a major event on the 16th of December and the only alcohol they served was Strongbow, Savanna, Heineken and bottles which started at R1300. For such a big place, I expect variety in terms of alcohol ciders, wine & for them to offer shots. That really disappointed me.
Precious M — Google review
Bad service. Extremely long queues, we spent 3 hours on the queue only to be told there’s no alcohol and ice.

Diepkloof Extreme Park is a stunning green space situated adjacent to a bustling thoroughfare, immink. Regrettably, the park suffers from neglect as the barricades meant to deter unauthorized scrap collectors have been pilfered. Moving ahead, it would be highly desirable for individuals to assume responsibility for the upkeep of this picturesque park. It also serves as an ideal location for engaging in athletic activities due to its vast expanse and excellent safety measures in place.

Lebo's Soweto Backpackers

Youth hostel
Lebo's Soweto Backpackers is a laid-back hostel located just a short drive from Vilakazi Street. It was the first black-owned backpackers in South Africa and remains a popular choice for accommodation in Soweto. The backpackers offers simple dorms and private rooms, along with a kitchen and an open-air restaurant where guests can enjoy authentic South African meals.
I took the 4 hour bike tour today and can not explain just how amazing the experience was. I was collected from my hotel by the wonderful Issac who graciously shared with me tales of his life living in Soweto, which included being there during the student shootings in 1976. On the tour itself you become immersed in township life, and are welcomed wherever you go. I will absolutely never forget the smiling faces of the beautiful children who high fived us as we cycled past. Thank you Lebo's for all you do for your community, for this humbling and hopeful experience and for sharing your stories with us ❤️
Amanda O — Google review
Lebo's backpackers is unique and one of the best. As always it's the people that make or break an experience and it's know exception at Lebo's. I could see the team here are a close knit group and are here to give their guests the best time. They have showcased to us the resilience of the Soweto township and it's people. Great food, comfy bed, clean rooms and common areas. We had a room with ensuite. Tents and dorm rooms are available. Plenty of in-house activities; biking tours, tuk tuk tours, walks, food tours and cooking classes. The team including guides immersed us in the history of Soweto, showcasing life as it was and imparted the positive developments of the new. We felt very safe while in Soweto, including our 4 night stay at Lebo's. We enjoyed a walk on our own, going to Nelson Mandela's house, Desmond Tutu house, Vilakazi street, and Hector Pieterson museum. Great interaction with Sowetites, welcoming us to their township. Also enjoyed a bike tour , tuk tuk tour and a story telling event including song. Thanks goes to the Lebo team for arranging airport shuttle anfy a driver to take us to a local shopping mall.

Wonderful experience. I did the 2hour tour with family/friends and it was truly worth it. The lunch before the ride was spectacular , and the service was impeccable. Our guide , ye-ye was extremely passionate and was wonderful at informing us all about Soweto . We met the locals and I loved seeing all the little kids who were equally happy to see us. If there is one thing to do in sa, it’s this. Highly recommend .

Nature & Parks
Mofolo Park is a delightful, pristine recreational area with a stunning, spacious ambiance that makes it an ideal spot for enjoying barbecues and outings with loved ones. This tranquil location could benefit from additional activities like fitness gatherings or similar events. It serves as an excellent haven for creative individuals due to its immaculate condition and secure surroundings. The park's aesthetics are pleasing, providing visitors with a wonderful space to unwind and rejuvenate themselves.
Mofolo Park, previously known to locals as the 5 Roses Bowl, has been revived. A great place for a picnic or a performances that require a stage, much better because it has a permanent stage. Our dj for the day placed their sets on the stage. But yhey required a gazebo to block the sun in the afternoon because the bowl faces the west of park & it's too sunny, although a plus for the spectators or public who'd be dancing & facing away from the sun in the open space. There are enough trees to enjoy their shades during summer. There's a fenced children's play area with swings & slides a few meters from the bowl. We had to bring our own braai stands & didn't see any braai stands. There are a few picnic benches, most of us enjoyed sitting on our picnic blankets, enjoyed the shades & the music
Angel T — Google review
It's very peaceful and they need to put little effort into cleaning daily and the toilet situation is beyond me. I don't understand y Soweto parks don't have toilets or usable ones at least. Security is visible these always traffic offices. They need to fix the kids' playing area as nothing is usable. Good gyming equipment, they just need to maintain and have a security looking after that section cause since the swings are not working they swinging there.
Lindiwe T — Google review
I absolutely enjoyed my time there, not necessarily for the place itself but the people. The art that you will see there was done by us and the girls. That was an awesome experience. The dust thou wasn't sexy, some driver decided to spin and create even more dust - I hope he chokes on it one day. The space itself is lovely, just needs more maintenance cause it could be way better. It's child friendly but that slide is dangerous, they could have made it more safer for kids. That's just my 2cents. Happy parking 🅿️
Nontokozo Z — Google review
Mofolo Park's well-kept grounds are obvious in the neatly cut grass I saw, suggesting that maintenance may be occasional. The park shines as a tranquil retreat when there aren’t any events. I always bring my pet with me, so the park's dog-friendliness is a big advantage for me. One of the drawback for the park is the children's play area, which is currently missing a few swings which is evident in the grounds the swings used to be. Hopefully, these will be replaced soon will complete the park's offerings and make it even more appealing for families. Also, restrooms. I did not stick at the park long enough because I saw non.

Catholic church
Sights & Landmarks
Churches & Cathedrals
Regina Mundi Catholic Church, a prominent landmark in Rockville, Soweto, is not just the largest Roman Catholic church in South Africa; it also holds a significant place in the nation’s history. Officially opened on July 24, 1964, this architectural gem designed by Anthony Noel Errol Slaven became a sanctuary for anti-apartheid activists during one of the most tumultuous times in South African history.
At the heightened time of political unrests, resistance and revolt against the fascist apartheid regime in South Africa, churches used to be meeting places for the anti apartheid activism. People would be mobilised to resist apartheid. The gatherings would be initiated by either students or civil or political organisations... Regina Mondi in SOWETO was one such church. Not that the church was playing a role of influencing people, but church halls were use for venue... Roma in Small Farms Evaton was also rendezvous for political movements... Like Morris Isaacson High School, where the June 16, 1976 student uprising started... Church ministers, like Archbishop Desmond Tutu, would be seen in between the police and the revolting crowds trying to plead with the police not to use excessive force when dispersing the gathering crowds. In those scenes then, violence would erupt, the police would be seen hitting people with sjamboks. People getting injured, apprehended and detained without trial by police... Regina Mundi, a tourists attraction features a lot in the rich history of SOWETO.

Cool air and a high, generous space. We slipped into a pew and let our eyes travel—stained glass, photographs, and small marks that carry big stories. A guide shared memories from the struggle years, and the building felt like it was listening with us. We didn’t stay long, but we left with that steady feeling you get from places that have held people in difficult times. Outside, the neighbourhood’s everyday sounds picked up again, and we carried on a little quieter than before.
Robert G — Google review
So glad we stopped by this church. They say it was one of the places that egged the revolution on for the downtrodden of Soweto. It was so beautiful inside, I hope it continues to stay full with the faithful. The surroundings are a little sad (poverty). The stained glass inside the church was amazing. Images of Mr Mandela leading people, mixed in with religious.

1947 on Vilakazi Street

Restaurant
1947 on Vilakazi is a unique restaurant located in the heart of Soweto, next to the homes of Nobel Prize Winners Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former president Nelson Mandela. The establishment aims to embody the ethos of ubuntu by offering authentic African cuisine in a family-friendly setting. While some visitors have experienced challenges with bookings, others have praised the efficient service and delicious food with generous portions. The atmosphere is lively and bustling, making it a great spot for those who enjoy vibrant settings.
I visited 1947 on Vilakazi Street, and it was hands down one of the best meals I've ever had. Every dish was bursting with flavor, perfectly cooked, and beautifully presented. The lamb chops were tender and juicy, the ribs were incredibly flavorful, and the sides were just as impressive—crispy fries, creamy mashed potatoes, and fresh vegetables that complemented the meal perfectly. The ambiance of the restaurant was vibrant and welcoming, making the experience even more enjoyable. The service was top-notch, with attentive and friendly staff who made sure everything was perfect from start to finish. I would revisit Johannesburg from Canada just to eat here again—that's how good it was. If you're looking for a restaurant that delivers exceptional food and a fantastic dining experience, 1947 on Vilakazi is an absolute must-visit! Highly recommended, and I can't wait to return!

Get out of the burbs and have a great culinary and social experience in Soweto! The food was beautifully presented by their young chef (if only a tad over-seasoned for my palate); cocktails delicious; service was good. I'd go back.
Melissa S — Google review
To say I was disappointed would be an understatement, especially because I spent 2 years planning to go there for my birthday because I love the aesthetics of the establishment. The service we got from our waiter was the worst, he was absent minded and looked like he didn't even want to serve us. No introduction or explanation of the menu and it's content, we had to figure on our own what was on the menu and what it could possibly be, we even resorted to using Google because he looked bored when we asked him questions... Worst service of my life... The food was just alright, I only enjoyed the lamb chops and the cocktails.. The rest was just Bland and lacked flavour. There's great potential for the establishment to grow if the staff can change their attitude and focus on giving customers a great service... Otherwise the place is gorgeous. Left a huge lump on my throat and ruined my birthday but hey.... There might be a better experience next time.
Tebogo M — Google review
I celebrated my birthday with a lunch at 1947 on Vilakazi Street, and I couldn’t have chosen a better spot. From start to finish, it was nothing short of amazing—warm hospitality, rich flavors, and an atmosphere that made the day feel extra special. The setting is elegant, right in the heart of Vilakazi Street, which already gives the place a sense of history and pride. The food? Absolutely phenomenal. My brother and I had the mogodu with dombolo, and it was melt-in-your-mouth tender—comforting, hearty, and packed with flavour. My husband and my brother’s girlfriend ordered burgers ( I tasted the chips and for me personally the best chips I ever tasted) and everyone was raving at the table. For drinks the guys ordered theirs and we had a purple cocktail (completely forgot the name of the cocktail but it was nice, a bit too sweet but nice) Our waiter was so friendly and attentive without hovering, and it really felt like we were being taken care of by someone who wanted us to enjoy the moment. Price-wise, everything felt worth it—generous portions, great cocktails, and the overall experience made it feel like a celebration in every sense. If you’re looking for a place to make a birthday feel special—delicious food, great vibes, and true South African hospitality—1947 is the one. I left full, happy, and already planning a return

Sakhumzi Restaurant, established in 2001 by Soweto-born Mr. Sakhumzi Maqubela, has grown from a small team to 42 full-time staff. Located on Vilakazi Street in Orlando West, it offers traditional African delicacies like Mogodu and tripe, popular among locals and visitors alike. The restaurant is known for its unbeatable South African hospitality and authentic dishes that showcase the rich flavors of the region.
Look no further for traditional food and local dishes; our wonderful guide took us there; you can't go wrong with a mix of tasty food and an all-you-can-eat buffet. The seating area outside is very nice and a remarkable place to enjoy a break during the hottest and humid hours of the noon at Soweto. Eventually, you'll get some artist performance the street across not associated with the restaurant but performing for the restaurant clients, your choice to tip or not I would make an effort to come back there if I ever come back to Joburg

Finally made it!!! It's always been packed the times I have been to Vilakazi Street and I'd end up at another restaurant, but today I had the Sakhumzi experience. The food is delicious 😋, well prepared I honestly can't complain. The service is a bit slow though, could be due to the busyness of the restaurant. I'll definitely pop in again.

We dropped in for lunch and ended up staying longer than planned. The street hums past your table while plates of chakalaka, pap, and grilled meat arrive at an easy pace. Staff were warm without hovering and the vibe felt like a family gathering you’ve been invited to. We swapped bites across the table, ordered a second round of sides, and watched tour groups drift by. What I liked most was the mix of visitors and locals in one space. By the time we left, we’d shared a laugh with the folks at the next table and promised ourselves we’d come back on a Sunday when the street is in full voice.

Beautiful view and the place is a good establishment. The famous Vilakazi street. I did enjoy being in the area The thing waiter was good, just a bit slow, because we came in as a group, but it seemed like they were not expecting a group of people. Otherwise the food was great and the team enjoyed the food. The drinks are reasonable, and their food variety is great. The restroom needs to be at least more easily accessible from the outside. I guess it's a bit too inside if you need to go to the restroom. The vibe is great, great staff. Great service for eKasi establishment.

I guess it's the price of fame. It was packed, tables were put together and seating haphazard. service was slow cause the staff was rushed. We left after the table we were given felt like a back room in the kitchen.

Parks
Dorothy Nyembe Park, spanning 23 hectares, is a popular destination in Soweto for residents and visitors to enjoy sports and nature. The park features walking trails, courts for volleyball, netball, and basketball, wetland-fed dams, morabaraba and chess areas, a children's playground, and designated areas for braai. Additionally, it offers amenities such as an environmental center, bird hide, various dams, and an amphitheater.
Went there around 4pm to meet with a friend and i must say, the quietness there, fresh air under the trees. Not very clean but also not very dirty.

It used to be one of the best oldest parks back then in the 90s, but now it's no longer safe, day in and day out
Godfrey M — Google review
I heard it used to be one of the best parks in soweto, but down the line they've been bad reports of people being mugged, raped and even killed.i guess it safer during the day but make sure you don't visit or pass through alone especially women and children

It's a very very very dangerous park. There a no securities, people get robbed, killed and dumped there. There are many cases about that park but still bad things happen. I advice that these matters should be taken seriously and the must be security to ensure that everyone is safe.so that we can all enjoy being there without worrying about being robbed or being killed. It's a nice park take care of it!!

I had an amazing experience at Naledi backpackers in Soweto. The friendly and helpful staff made me feel like I was living in Soweto for a weekend. This locally-run hostel provided me with a safe environment and arranged convenient shuttles to explore the area. Although I didn't have time for their bike tours, they seemed appealing. Overall, it is an excellent place to spend quality time with friends and family while enjoying delicious food.
Honestly one of thee best experiences I've had in JHB . Look forward to doing this again

We had a great time at Naledi backpackers. We really felt like living in Soweto for a weekend. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful, they took us all around, and they opened the doors of their house for us. This is a familiar hostel, run by locals. They were well aware of our ignorance about Soweto and they arranged shuttles any time we needed them. The area feels safe. We had no time for the bike tours they offer, but they look cool.

Top, Best Awesome service great place to spend time with friends and family. The food is mouth watering, devine. You won't regret it, you'll be coming back for more good times.

Booked a quad bike tour on 29th December 2017 for 10 people. Paid R9000 upfront. When we arrived there were only 5 quad bikes - none of which were roadworthy and all were started with 1 battery. No brakes on any of the bikes. Decided not to do the tour for safety reasons. Received a letter declaring that R9000 would be refunded in 14 days - still have not received a penny from the R9000. In process of instituting legal action.

Great place with lots of history. The food was great but the signs of the Covid void are visible. Nonetheless, it is quite remarkable how they have kept going, even without electricity over the last few years.

I oredered the beef curry, with dumpling, salad and mash.... Honestly the mash was watery it looked like porridge truly a dissapointment, my curry was just chunks of meat, potatoes and 1 carrot slice, it was edible but not flavoursome... Either way I truly enjoyed the salad

If you looking for a little bit of history in a beautiful intimate place you found it. By far one of the most historical places I've ever visited. Couldn't believe the world renowned people who have been here. There's currency notes of places I didn't even know exist. The host Wandi is the sweetest old man who tells the most beautiful stories. The food was authenticallly South African. Highly recommend for tourist and locals. Icing on the cake is being able to write your name on the wall amongst the many who have came and gone.

June 16 Memorial Acre

Memorial park
June 16 Memorial Acre, opened in 2015, is a museum and memorial commemorating the 1976 Soweto Uprising. Located near Morris Isaacson High School in White City, where the original student marches began, it offers an alternative to the Hector Pieterson Museum. The open-air memorial features a striking wall documenting the events of that fateful day through powerful images. Visitors can explore informative displays and artworks that provide insight into this significant historical event.
The place is still clean and well maintained from inside to the outside, and they have all the information about the June 16 history. I enjoyed my visit at this place.

The Acre is another place other than Hector Pieterso Museum, where the story of the students uprising on the 16th June 1976 is told. At the Acre you find a mural in which the route followed by the marching students followed. You also will see a time of the day where each major incident happened. Outside the venue there is a statue of Tsietsi Mashinini. The place is good place to be visited by students and normal tourist who need to know more about the history of Soweto.

We had a wonderful stay at Ekuthuleni Guest House from 04 March to 18 March. There were 11 of us staying at the guest house, and the service was excellent throughout. Sanele K — Google review
The people on comments are lying theres no professionalism about the guest house. The level of disrespect is very high and shifting of blames amongst employees. They told us that they will bring breakfast in the morning at 08H00 am, then in the morning we're told is that the is breakfast for umfundisi and no one told us initially that we have to order and we are told that the breakfast is free all of a sudden. The stinking attitude from the employees is very high, they dont even greet us. We parked our car and had to walk to another house to sleep then what about our safety. The whole 3 room house we were taken to has only 1 bathroom and toilet. Because only good thing's were mentioned on previous reviews but what we got there was totally different. The blankets and pillows were dirty with stains. The service was very bad from those employees. They failed to answer our questions when we had enquiries. The rooms are very expensive, imagine R650 and R850 for the above mentioned in a very small room. Therefore I can't recommend that guest house for anyone! I'm very disappointed in such customer services.

The toilet is very dirty with kaka on it. The blankets are very dirty with stains which are look like makaka and those blankets are very small. They don't treat customers the same thima basincishe i breakfast kwathiwa eyamfundisi. You park your car and go to another house which is about 1km walk. I cannot recommend this dirty house to anyone. They failed even to answer our questions. All of them bane bad attitude kunuka amasimba kuleyandlu yakhona sies

Good Service But My Chicken Was Not Cooked On The Inside
Kevin S — Google review
We ordered a chicken Quesadilla, a chai latte, a cappuccino and a brownie with soft serve. The Quesadilla was NOTHING to write home about. I'm pretty sure it sat under a heat lamp. The tortilla and cheese were both hard and the whole thing was barey warm. Cheese and chicken that was it. No real flavor however we did order the "hot sauce" on the side. Red sauce was doctored up ketchup and the green sauce was just minced jalapeno. Really all-round not impressed, I mean if you cannot produce a tasty quesadilla.... The coffee drinks were good and the brownie was delish! The soft serve was typical soft serve. The staff was amazing! But I won't return.
