Maponya Mall

Shopping mall
Maponya Mall is a bustling shopping center located in Soweto, known for its diverse range of stores, dining options, and entertainment facilities. It stands as a testament to the development in the township, being the first to have a full-service mall. The mall offers easy access and ample parking, with a clean and well-maintained environment. Visitors can expect a vibrant atmosphere with people from different backgrounds enjoying the various amenities.
my first time going here but was really nice. well layed out and good parking!
Megan R — Google review
The ongoing conflict between Soweto Taxi Services and e-hailing services is really disruptive, not only for the drivers themselves but also for customers who rely on both services for their transportation needs. Obstruction at the main gate really inconveniences customers who drive in and out of the mall because of the traffic caused by this conflict. It is disappointing to see the management not intervening in anyway about this matter and having its customers bring such matters to their attention and begging for intervention which negatively impacts the mall’s reputation as a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors. May the malls management please step in and ensure safety, improving customer experience, and maintaining good working relationships with all transport service providers.
Zwelihle M — Google review
We ran a few errands and ended up staying for lunch. It’s busy in a familiar, local way—families shopping, teens comparing sneakers, music from a store spilling into the walkway. We liked that the layout makes sense and you don’t lose time hunting for basics. From a café table we people-watched, planned the rest of the afternoon, and voted on dessert we didn’t need. It works as a reset between sightseeing stops, and you leave feeling part of the neighbourhood rhythm.
Robert G — Google review
It's a nice place to be it also depends on what you are looking for.. Clothes, food, accessories...there is plenty of unpaid parking...I would want to review more of your shops with a small reward if that's not a problem.
SIXOLILE F — Google review
Ongoing conflicts between taxi services and e-hailing services can cause accessibility issues. I'm concerned about the mall's maintenance quality
Mfundo N — Google review
The mall is inaccessible. Go shop there at your own risk. It's unfortunate that I have to give a star but this mall doesn't deserve even a single star because of those taxi association fighting uber drivers, we are forced to use a taxi..
Ntuli N — Google review
I honestly do not understand why the management of Maponya mall is allowing taxi drivers to bully us , even when we complain here on Google . They respond with a generic response which is really concerning. my life was threatened by one of those taxi drivers because I was using Uber. I am now scared to go to that mall. The only thing I want is to cancel my gym membership from that mall and I promise I will never set foot into that mall ever again.
Sarah Z — Google review
The expirience i had with the mall,.. was that it was neat ,very smart and decorative,.. was a bit packed but it is very bif to accommodate all of us,.. theres a lot of shops or most shops are there that you can think of,.. and the parking is very big to accommodate us ,.. it is also good for shoping theres lot of clothing stores and food court is big and tidy,..

Thokoza Park

Park
Nature & Parks
Thokoza Park, located in Rockville, Soweto, is a popular green space with various amenities. It features paved footpaths, picnic areas, playgrounds, and a rejuvenated Moroka Dam named after Dr. James Moroka. The park also boasts well-manicured lawns and large leafy trees. Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere while taking a stroll near the famous Regina Mundi Church and observing the birdlife along the way.
Chilled place i love it good for your peace of mind
Proud M — Google review
Thokoza Park is my go-to spot, it’s conveniently located and has a lots of features like picnic spots, benches, a quaint stream, and braai areas. While Thokoza Park offers much, the state of the water stream is a concern. Despite park cleaning efforts elsewhere, the stream unfortunately remains littered. Addressing this through consistent maintenance would significantly enhance the park's overall appeal. The lack of evening lighting in certain areas creates safety concerns, particularly during shorter winter days. Installing well-placed lighting would significantly improve security and encourage broader park use throughout the day. Children using the park are at risk for injury from some of the broken swings. Making their repair a top priority would guarantee that everyone had a fun and safe experience.
Nando G — Google review
This place lost dignity and care. It's dirty, filthy full of rubbish and people drinking alcohol, peeing on grass and trees. Awful
Kiki M — Google review
The park is a true natural beauty, it's just a bit neglected, as some rides are broken and unsafe for young kids. A beautiful place overall, please keep an eye on your young ones and guide them to safer rides
Ncumisa T — Google review
Was a splendid weather, but saw a lot of unpleasing scenerios while there. Like kids smoking Hubble's, cigarettes and drinking alcohol in public which I thought was rude of them. But overall it was a chilled day, met friendly people, had a proper jol with people
XOLANI K — Google review
The park it's self was awesome. However the police that came at 5PM ended the fun family day in a very disturbing manner. Tonight myself and my family go to sleep again not impressed to be South African because of being treated the way we were. The police could have chosen to speak to the community but they chose to carry on like they were moving sheep from the garden.

Historic Sites
Mandela's House, located at 8115 Orlando West in Johannesburg, was once the residence of Nelson Mandela and his family. The house has been transformed into a museum by the Soweto Heritage Trust to showcase the life and legacy of the revered former president. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring Mandela's personal belongings, photographs, and paintings.
Well preserved artifacts and pictures of late South African president and family. The walls bear the marks of the dangers of the circumstances they lived in and the threats they faced. Tour guide was very knowledgeable. The tour evoked a sense of hope for South Africa and the mother continent and a reminder about the resilence of the human spirit.

Well preserved home of Nelson Mandela in Soweto. If you take the guided tour, you'll better understand the history and the items at the house. A must see place for tourists to Johannesburg. Most of area is level but watch for some steps. Toilets available. Tour can take about 30 minutes. Go early to avoid crowds.

Quick Takeaways 🇿🇦 Small but powerful museum located in Soweto, South Africa 🏘️ Situated in a poorer area — infrastructure is basic but authentic 🚗 Best visited with a guide for ease, safety, and local insight 💬 English widely spoken, so communication is easy (Zulu also commonly spoken) 💰 Expect traders and beggars nearby — guides help manage these interactions 🏠 Tiny but well-maintained site packed with information about Mandela and his family 🎓 Student guides are knowledgeable; tipping (10–20 rand) is appreciated but optional 🍴 No café or shop on-site, though local food options (like kota) are nearby ⏱️ Tour lasts about 15 minutes, with time to wander afterward 🙏 Humbling and emotional visit — inspiring to see Mandela’s humble beginnings ✅ Safe overall with sensible precautions; high unemployment (≈30%) explains the informal trading Full Review Nelson Mandela House is a small but fascinating and well-maintained property in Soweto, South Africa. It’s located within a sprawling suburb that ranges widely in living standards — from affluent homes to some of the poorest areas. The house itself sits in one of the less developed sections, so don’t expect polished roads, car parks, or visitor infrastructure. Because of this, visiting with a guide — either as part of a group or privately — is highly recommended. You can certainly go on your own, but a guide makes the experience easier and more relaxed. They can also help you navigate the number of traders, beggars, and street sellers who operate nearby; our guide advised not to engage, which proved sensible. Communication isn’t a problem — English is widely spoken, and if you speak even a little Zulu, that’s a bonus. Once inside the small gated area, everything is smooth and well organised. The property includes the modest house itself, a ticket office, toilet facilities, and a small garden. Despite its size, the museum is packed with fascinating information about Mandela and his family. You can explore at your own pace or take a guided tour — my guide was a university student who was friendly and well informed. While tipping isn’t mandatory, offering 10–20 rand is a kind gesture. There’s no café or full shop on-site, though you can buy small items like books or souvenirs at the ticket booth. For food or drink, you’ll need to leave the site. Having a guide helps here too — they know where to find safe and authentic local food. I tried a kota, a local street snack served from a small shack nearby. It was inexpensive (around £1.50), delicious, and the cook was kind, talkative, and welcoming. The house itself is tiny, and the guided portion of the visit takes about 15 minutes. You can, however, stay longer to read the displays and reflect on the significance of the place. It’s a genuinely humbling experience — to stand where one of the world’s greatest leaders began his journey is unforgettable. At no point did I feel unsafe. The people approaching you are mostly trying to make an honest living in a country with unemployment around 30%, which explains the informal trade and street hustling. While vigilance is sensible, visiting Mandela’s House is perfectly safe and absolutely worth doing.

Small space with a big atmosphere. We stepped through the doorway and it felt like walking into a family album—photos, letters, and everyday objects that make the headlines feel personal. The guide moved at an easy pace and let us linger where something caught our eye. We left the stoep a little quieter than we arrived, with Vilakazi Street humming around us.
Peter M — Google review
Stepping inside feels like opening a family album—framed photos, small personal items, and notes that turn headlines into human moments. Our guide spoke simply and let us linger whenever something caught our eye. I liked that the rooms aren’t overly staged; you can almost imagine footsteps in the passage and a kettle coming to the boil. Back on the stoep, Vilakazi’s chatter felt different once we’d seen the home behind the name. We took a last look at the doorway, swapped a quiet nod with another visitor, and carried that feeling into the rest of the street.
Robert G — Google review
Quick and full of historical facts tour of Modiba's family house. Price was just faire per adults. R180. Furniture preserved to the point we could feel the presence of their owners. The bullets impacts on the walls and on the top of the trash can, made a clear effective impact on this journey. The surroundings were little markets and all sort of souvenirs you can buy on vilakazi street. They're not cheap but it gave us a sense of participation to the local economy so we did not hesitate. So should you. Overall experience great!!

History Museums
The Hector Pieterson Memorial is a museum located at 8287 Khumalo St, dedicated to chronicling the events of the 1976 Soweto student uprising. This historic site is named after its first victim, 12-year-old Hector Pieterson, whose tragic death became an international symbol in the fight against apartheid.
We experienced terrific hours under the guidance of our experienced guide mr. Bheki of Soweto Guided Tours/Muano Tours, who shared a personal testimony about the struggle against apartheid and the years after. A moving story of suffering and overcoming, of not forgetting the pain, of healing reconciliation. Mr. Bheki appeared to be a born storyteller and as a white, Dutch tourist I was drawn into the world from the 1970s and thereafter, while passing by the houses and churches of Nelson and Winnie Mandela and bishop Tutu. Also touching was the symbolism of the Hector Pierson Memorial and its square, plus the shoes on the wall nearby. What a tale to hear! Cycling through the neighbourhood I was also touched by the friendliness of the people on the streets and felt very comfortable being there, contrary to what many may think. This appeared to be the definitive highlight of my SA-trip - apologies to the big 5 :). This is even worth seven stars. Also great was that the organisation arranged a taxi to pick us up and bring us back: driver Chris was nice company who brought us straight into the heart of Soweto.

Didnt go inside the museum. But the information outside is wow. Loved how everything there has a meaning. The trees, the walls, the line, the stones, the water, the paving etc. True artwork. There is this guy who looks like he is not a tour guide but the information he has is too much. He knows everything by head. Wish i could remember his name to recommend him
MUZIWETHU M — Google review
I have nothing bad to say about this site, it was amazing and all so though out and sentimental. We had a guide who described exactly why each little things happened and there was so much thought into the actual museum itself, definitely should visit!

Heavy stuff, but a good addition to your historic experience if you are visiting the Mandela house, which is very close by. Also, a lot of the markets sit right outside of the memorial and give you a chance to experience a lot of the culture in a walkable safe area.

The museum does an incredible job of telling the story of Hector's life and the significance of the 1976 student uprising. The exhibits are well-curated, and the staff are knowledgeable and passionate. A must-visit for anyone interested in South African history and the struggle for freedom. Highly recommended!

I came here early Saturday morning. Before the heap of tourist buses arrives. The museum is really good 👍 I spend almost an hour just taking it all in my own time. You can have a guided tour if you want. I didn't feel the need. It's such a huge historical monument. It's also a very planned layout. If you're a wheelchair user, you'll will not have a problem visiting here. It's incredibly accessible with ramps. Also It's walking distance from the Nelson Mandela house, too. People outside are very friendly and I meet Hectors sister Antoinette!! She does guided tours.
Dayana A — Google review
This part of Soweto is a must visit. The significance of this piece of history to South Africa can not be underestimated. We were lucky enough to be visiting at the time Hector's sister, represented as the girl in that famous photo behind her. Hector's death was the catalyst for change that took another 30 years, sadly.

Dobsonville Mall, nestled in the heart of Johannesburg's Soweto, is a vibrant shopping destination that caters to all your retail desires. As the first mall established in this area, it stands as a testament to local economic growth and development. The recent expansion has transformed it into an impressive space with a plethora of stores including popular names like PNP, Shoprite, and Mr Price.
I couldn't believe my eyes, when I saw my hometown mall three times bigger than it was before. I felt overwhelmed, it was like seeing a favorite place for the first time. A lot have changed, even the number of store is way high. There's more than enough space to move around, there's security and surveillance cameras incase you lose something. Toilets are clean and they offer sanitizers for Hygiene. I had one of the best experiences

Nando's Maponya Mall is a popular Afro-Portuguese eatery that specializes in serving flame-grilled chicken smothered in a zesty chili sauce. This chain restaurant offers a unique dining experience, and customers can enjoy their meals amidst an energetic ambiance. The establishment also hosts various events on its rooftop, including the Basha in Casa event, where visitors can indulge in free beverages while being entertained by talented South African artists like Langa Mavuso.
I really enjoyed my time. I went there with my sister for lunch. When we got there, there was an event on the rooftop. We received a free drink forgot the name. It was a Basha in Casa event. Few SA artists were there including Langa Mavuso as a show stopper. It was such an amazing sunday. A real best belated birthday celebration 🥰🥂

⭐ 1/5 Absolutely pathetic service! This place is a complete disaster and should just shut down. - **No Seating:** Despite there being ample space upstairs, we were told we couldn’t sit there. The staff didn’t bother helping us find a table, leaving us to struggle on our own. - **Terrible Service:** After finally finding a seat, no waiter came to take our order. We had to stand in line *again* just to place an order. - **Food Disappointment:** When the food arrived, it was an even bigger letdown. The portions were tiny—no value for money. The server didn’t even tell us which meal was which. To make it worse, they gave us **no cutlery**! We had to use spoons to cut chicken strips. Moreover the bowl I had ordered was missing the roasted corn as per the menu This was hands down the worst Nando’s experience I’ve ever had. I will *never* return to this place to be treated like this. Avoid at all costs! 🚮
MZIMKHULU N — Google review
Not so great to be sent away after you spent over R200 on a full chicken meal just because you drinking cranberry juice bought elsewhere, and mind you they DON’T sell cranberry juice in store. It is a quiet big restaurant, compared to other Nando’s’ filling up 2 stories but then no patrons are allowed to dine on the upper storey even when it is packed downstairs, they’d rather put you on the outside tables in cold weather which rather renders it useless

I ordered two quarter chickens with salad and the other with Peri Peri wedges and one garlic roll... Went to do my shopping. So when I came back i couldn't check if my order was fine cause the person that was assisting me approached me with my package so when I was at the door I checked if they put extra sauce in my chicken. Then I only saw that they gave me chips not Peri Peri wedges, only to find out that they didn't give a garlic roll... So when I arrived at work which in protea I saw that this lady didn't give me a garlic roll she just gave me a roll. I regret buying at this Nando's

When you find yourself in Soweto, make sure to add Nexdor to your culinary itinerary. Nestled on the vibrant Vilakazi Street, this lively eatery is a fusion of local culture and modern dining. The name "Nexdor," inspired by a fun night at Sakhumzi Restaurant, cleverly combines "next" and "door," embodying the spirit of community.
I've never had so much happiness in my life. The place is exquisitely wonderful, the setup, staff, food and the music is to die for. My take is the band on Sunday sessions, they specialise in local talent and relatable local genres. The place has a truly South African atmosphere and is extremely classy. It attracts tourists from outside the yard. I would recommend this place to anyone who will visit Vilakazi Street. To date, I still have chills with unforgettably experience. Go have a blast on Sunday sessions...

This place is not what it used to be. They sell almost nothing. 90% of the drinks on the menu were not available. Their food looked hideous and not appetizing at all! To top it off, my friend found a dead roach at the bottom of their glass. The lady that was serving us, looked so depressed and unhappy. Didn't even come to check up on our table at all. The music was depressing and the atmosphere was just not right. We decided to pay and go somewhere else stat! Never again.

A filling mix. Looking for a breakfast, try their omelet. After doing the Mofolo parkrun, we ended up here (Wandies were closed till 11am) and Nexdor was suggested by the manager at Sakhumzi’s. So there we were - only two of us, as Vilakazi Street only gets going much later. It was nevertheless interesting watching the goings on with hawkers unpacking their wares, and our hosts unpacking their umbrellas on the deck. It was fine weather at just Nexdor to Sakhumzi’s. It took a while, but when our omelet arrived, it didn’t have the mix of fillings we asked for but it was nevertheless substantial, well prepared, and at a value price. The waitress did apologise, so accepted the side beacon discounted for the mixup. We left with mixed feelings. Next time, perhaps we’ll try the next door.
Malcolm T — Google review
A small group of us just went into this resturant for coffee and cheese sandwich take out. The resturant was absolutely empty except for us and the food took 20 minutes to receive coffee and 40 minutes for the food to come out. The waitress was laxicazical and mixed up drink orders that that was all literally, coffee and water and a coke. Then the cheese sandwich comes out with no cheese. I send it back, and it takes ten mins for the chefs to put this garbage on my sandwich. I wish I had waited until the end to pay, they would have gotten none of my money for this nonsense. Do not eat here.

Vuyos Restaurant is a success story inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of a township local who turned his passion for creating unforgettable moments and delicious food into an upmarket restaurant and catering service. Located on Vilakazi Street, it offers South African favorites like Boerie and Chips and Malva pudding. The founder's journey began with a mobile vending business selling Boerie rolls under the trademarked name Vuyos, drawing inspiration from a fictional tale in a Hansa Pilsener advert.
Very chilled but vibey place. In the heart of Vilakazi Street, a gem 💎 exists. They served us tasty food and a variety of drinks at very reasonable prices. The service is excellent. The waitrons are very pleasant and eager to serve. The view from the deck is awesome 👌🏿. There is plenty of seating, enclosed and outside. There is no ramp for persons on wheelchairs, no special bathrooms for paraplegic people. There is only one toilet for males and another one for females, which resulted in a queue for the females. The toilets are clean and well serviced. There is also no special/wheelchair friendly parking. In fact, there is no dedicated or special parking for anyone. Parking is along the pavement of Vilakazi which is lined up of businesses and restaurants, and that parking is on first come first served basis.

My partner and I visited Vuyos in Soweto on a Saturday afternoon, drawn in by their seemingly professional and polished website. The images and reviews online promised quality and cleanliness, creating high expectations. However, upon arrival, it was immediately clear that the management and maintenance of the establishment had significantly declined. The stark discrepancy between the website’s portrayal and the reality was disappointing. Despite our initial doubts, we decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the experience only worsened from there. The food was substandard, with the salad - primarily wilted lettuce - appearing unappetizing and possibly reused. The drinks were equally underwhelming; my Soweto Gold craft beer was flat and lacked freshness, reminiscent of a poorly stored Castle Light. The pricing added insult to injury. The bill rivaled what one might expect at a premium establishment like Monte Casino, yet the quality and experience fell woefully short of justifying the cost. Hygiene and presentation were sorely lacking, leaving a lasting negative impression. Regrettably, the consequences of our visit extended beyond the poor dining experience. Both my partner and I suffered severe stomach cramps and diarrhea the following day, with her still feeling very ill even a day and a half later. This raises serious concerns about the restaurant's food safety and hygiene standards. While the restaurant’s location is excellent, it appears to be plagued by severe mismanagement. In light of our experience, I cannot recommend Vuyos. For those considering a dining option in the area, I strongly suggest visiting the restaurant across the street, Sakhumzi, which seems to offer a far more reliable and enjoyable experience. The only reason I gave this review a one-star rating is that the waitress was very helpful, offering a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing visit. I hope this review helps others make an informed decision before choosing to dine at Vuyos.

The vibe to this place is awesome. My guests couldn't stop talking about how amazing the food was. Guys their food is really tasty. Pricing is reasonable and service on point. You won't sit with an empty glass the waiters are on top of things. Matt was awesome and accommodating. I would most be be there again!! Well done Vuyos team!!!

Great place. Food is nice. Excellent service (was served by Precious). Definitely will be going back soon. Had dumplings and meat which was on special. Though I was charged R20 for parking on the side of the road, which was demanded by the car guard (iphara).

Had a lovely experience. Food prices at a slight premium but almost want to say worth it. All dishes were well prepared and thoroughly enjoyed. Would definitely recommend to others and consider going again when in the area. The chef even prepared something special for a birthday girl. Only complaint was some plates that was not properly cleaned /washes before being brought to our table.

Very nice restaurant with good staff. The food could do with a little bit of work, my friend and I both had ribs and wings. The ribs were not really good, that disappointed me and the portion of them don’t deserve to be called ribs. Wings were great! I enjoyed the vibe however the music was to loud, we had to talk so loud in order to overpower the sound. I think the moments where they would switch off we found a bit of relief.

A quaint venue situated along the buzzing Vilakazi Street in Orlando West, directly opposite Sakhumzi Restaurant. Go to this restaurant to experience the thrill of Soweto - the energy is electrifying. While your first drinks order may arrive quickly, expecting efficient service thereafter is a tall ask - there are periods where you’ll be kept waiting for a very long time for staff to attend to you. Similarly, the food isn’t amazing and there isn’t a vast amount of variety on the menu, especially if you aren’t a fan of beef or fatty meat. While there wasn’t a DJ on the day we went, several buskers stream into the venue so there’s a great deal of entertainment on offer. If you want a venue that’s quieter than Sakhumzi, then this venue could work for you. Either way, it’s great seeing Black businesses thriving in the townships and Vuyo’s deserves our support.

Chez Alina’s was a great dining experience after touring Soweto and the Nelson Mandela Museum 07 February 2025! A group of us thoroughly enjoyed lunch which felt like a homecoming. Chicago, Illinois and Houston, Texas USA was in the house. Thanks for the hospitality.

The food was nice and I really enjoyed the trifle. The tables can be more spacious than that because felt that they were a bit crowded. But apart from that I really enjoyed visiting here.

Welcome to Chez Alina, where you can savor the local dishes of Soweto while immersing yourself in the neighborhood's vibrant culture. The restaurant is frequented daily by busloads of tourists eager to experience authentic cuisine in a family-run establishment that has been passed down through generations. The food was excellent, and my party of five finished our meal just before a charter bus arrived, bringing more hungry patrons eager to enjoy the delights of Chez Alina Restaurant.

What a great find! Alina was a tour guide but now opens her home in Soweto to feed tour groups and provide a unique experience. The food was very tasty, with lots of variety. Neighbourhood kids serve the customers, which contributes to their confidence, experience and English language. There were fans keeping the room cool, the bathrooms were clean, and the drinks were well chilled! Having the opportunity to see inside a residential area of Soweto was so much more interesting than the typical tourist restaurants.

For day 2, we recommend exploring the west side side of town. Start the day off with FNB Stadium, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Johannesburg Botanical Gardens. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

FNB Stadium, also known as Soccer City and The Calabash, is a renowned landmark in South Africa. This colossal stadium gained international acclaim as the main venue for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Today, it continues to make history by hosting major concerts, state events, and sports competitions. With a seating capacity of up to 95,000 people, this architectural marvel has become a premier concert destination for both local and international artists.
We went to Calabash 2025 and had a awesome time. Not only was it great to see three great musical acts but the whole event was well organised and the FNB Stadium created just the right atmosphere for such an occasion. The ushers all pointed us in the right direction so no wasted time searching for your seats. Easy access in and out.

Spent over 2 hours stuck in traffic trying to get into the Chiefs vs Sundowns match, very poor planning from those involved. Be prepared to be stuck for another 2 hours after the match. Luckily I left before extra time and was the 3rd row of parking on the road so made it out before the stand still traffic started.
Olatomiwa A — Google review
The biggest stadium in Africa! Yup it’s huge! Went here for the Travis Scott concert. Everything is actually very well organised in terms of management, security and seating. For the music concert, there was an abundance of food stalls available. This entire opinion is based off my personal experience at massive music concert with over 70k fans but it was very well organised. Parking however can be a nightmare and it can take a very long time to enter/exit the designated parking areas. I wish the stadiums roof had the ability to close because if it rains you are going to get soaked. Overall, it’s a fantastic and massive stadium that is known for hosting iconic sporting and music events. I’m happy I finally got to see it in person.

TRAVIS SCOTT CONCERT WAS OFF THE CHARTS. IT WAS FIRE 🔥 🔥 NOT EVEN THE RAIN OR THE DELAY HAMPERED MY SPIRIT. ONCE THAT MAN GOT ON THE STAGE, BONAAAA, ALL MY ANXIETY DISAPPEARED. SO GLAD I GOT TO WITNESS THIS IN MY LIFETIME WITH MY LOVELIFE BY MY SIDE
Mpho M — Google review
We arrived early and just stood for a minute taking in the calabash glow—it's one of those places that feels big even before you find your seats. Once the stands started filling, the energy rolled in waves: drums, vuvuzelas, people in colours, and that buzz that makes you grin before kickoff. We kept pointing out little details—the roof line, the patterns on the bowl—and then the teams came out and the noise lifted. Inside, everything felt smooth: easy to find our block, friendly staff, decent food queues. We spent halftime just watching the stadium breathe, crowd chants echoing, lights washing the pitch, kids dancing in the aisles. Walking out after the final whistle, voices were hoarse and everyone was smiling. Big, loud, and surprisingly warm—one of those nights that sticks.

Good stadium to accommodate supporters more especial when is Kaizer Chiefs against other opponent FNB Stadium is the best.
Linda K — Google review
Stunning Stadium, there's food and drinks on each level so you won't walk far. As well as restrooms. Had the best time while there for CB and TS concerts.
Randy K — Google review
As a South African, this stadium is where all your most biggest concert memories are made. I've seen artists like Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Foo Fighters, Guns and Roses, and so many more. Usually, they make you walk incredibly far, as the drop-off zones are usually extremely far for some reason. The lines to drinks are always extremely long, and I've missed some opening acts because of this. The management is okay, and the bathrooms are usually fairly clean because they cleaners are constantly busy there.

Specialty Museums
The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa, offers a comprehensive look at the country's 20th-century history and the now-defunct apartheid system. The museum features exhibits such as 'The Pillars of the Constitution,' which symbolize the values enshrined in South Africa's constitution. Visitors can explore the apartheid era through a variety of mediums including photos, artifacts, newspaper clippings, personal accounts, and film footage.
An exceptional museum. Very well curated. This museum is designed as a journey - it tells a difficult and painful story through powerful content, images, and videos. It’s also incredibly inspiring. Change is possible! Highly recommend. I arrived right as they opened at 9am and had the entire museum to myself for most of my visit.
Theresa — Google review
The Apartheid Museum is one of Johannesburg’s most important landmarks, offering a powerful and moving journey through South Africa’s history. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, guiding visitors through the story of apartheid with honesty, depth, and impact. It’s an educational experience that lingers long after you leave, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking to understand the country’s past and its path to reconciliation. Beyond the exhibits, the building itself is striking and picturesque — its architecture blends raw concrete, steel, and open spaces in a way that feels both symbolic and visually compelling. The design amplifies the weight of the history inside while also providing moments of reflection. The Apartheid Museum is as much a place of learning as it is of remembrance, and its setting makes the experience all the more profound.
Paul L — Google review
Quick Takeaways 🏛️ Impressive, modern museum documenting South Africa’s apartheid era 📍 Located in Ormonde, Johannesburg — adjacent to Gold Reef City 🚗 Safe, accessible area with ample parking and good transport links (car, taxi, bus, or guided tour) 💬 Everyone speaks fluent English; signage and staff communication are easy 🕊️ Immersive exhibits tell South Africa’s story from apartheid’s origins to its abolition 📽️ Powerful use of artefacts, videos, and photography — deeply emotional and thought-provoking 🧭 Layout can be confusing — follow the large vertical black signs to stay on route ☕ Good café with friendly staff and outdoor seating; local food and wildlife nearby 🛍️ Gift shop is overpriced but offers quality books, clothing, and standard souvenirs ⏱️ Allow 1–2 hours to visit fully 🙏 A sobering, essential experience that powerfully portrays South Africa’s long struggle for freedom ⸻ Full Review The Apartheid Museum is a striking and modern site that powerfully documents one of the darkest yet most defining periods in South African history. Located in Ormonde, Johannesburg, beside Gold Reef City, the area is relatively safe for tourists — especially during the day. While Johannesburg does have a reputation for crime, this particular location is well policed and well maintained. It’s accessible by car, taxi, bus, or tour, and at no point did I feel unsafe. I wouldn’t say there are zero risks — as with any large city, awareness is important — but tourist-related crime here is very low. If you drive, there’s ample, clearly marked parking only a short walk from the entrance. Ticketing is straightforward, with friendly staff who all speak fluent English, and prices are reasonable. From the very beginning, the museum immerses you in the ideology of segregation that defined apartheid. The entrance itself symbolically separates visitors by race — an immediate and sobering reminder of the injustice at the system’s core. From there, the exhibits guide you chronologically through apartheid’s origins, enforcement, resistance, and eventual dismantling. The displays are rich and varied, using a mix of artefacts, documents, photographs, films, and oral histories to tell the story. The presentation is impactful and emotional, with several areas that are genuinely moving. Many visitors — myself included — found certain sections deeply affecting, with some visibly in tears. The layout can be a little confusing, so make sure to follow the large black vertical signs to avoid missing key parts of the exhibition. Most of the museum is indoors, though there are a few outdoor installations, a small garden area, and a café with outside seating. If it rains, it won’t impact the experience, as the majority of the exhibits are housed inside. The café, though modest in appearance, serves good coffee and light snacks. The staff are friendly and happy to chat — one told me about the locally sourced food and the wildlife around the site, sparked by a conversation about weaver birds nesting above the café seating area. The gift shop is perhaps the weakest part of the experience — it’s expensive, but it does stock a good range of high-quality books, clothing, and South African-themed accessories, alongside the usual souvenirs. Overall, the Apartheid Museum is a must-visit. It’s emotional, educational, and unforgettable. You can easily spend one to two hours here, though you might linger longer if you want to take everything in. It’s a sobering reminder of how far South Africa has come — and a testament to the resilience, pain, and triumph of those who fought for freedom.
MilPoPo — Google review
What a great experience, and a sobering one too. We moved through the galleries slowly, reading, listening, and letting the story build room by room. The way the exhibits are laid out—photos, film, letters, everyday objects—makes it feel personal and real rather than distant history. We barely spoke for long stretches; it’s one of those places that asks you to pay attention and you do. Outside and in the open spaces we took a few breaths, looked back at the steel and concrete lines of the building, and felt the weight of it all in a good way—honest, necessary, human. We left quiet and thoughtful, grateful we’d made the time. It’s not a quick stop, but it’s the one we’ll remember.
Bradley S — Google review
I visited the Apartheid Museum during my short stay in Johannesburg. The museum was interesting, but it didn’t quite meet my expectations. There weren’t as many historical artifacts or organized exhibits as I had hoped. Still, I’m glad I had the chance to visit and learn more about South Africa’s history. The entrance fee was 170 South African rand as of October 18, 2025.
Anar G — Google review
Absolutely worth a visit. Very well done. Stop to read and learn. I also watched all videos along the route. Ended up spending 4 hours in the museum. Excellent work by the organisers.
Mia K — Google review
Buckle up for +1h of deep dive into the story of South African human foolishness way of thinking and treating pairs as folk... The museum immerse the visitors so well that at the end you may feel the weights of those stories and appreciate the efforts made to tell them. We highly recommend this stop when you're in Jozy.
Anicet J — Google review
We were educated and moved by the museum's displays, and wish we'd had more time there even after spending 5 hours. Thought provoking doesn't capture it. The museum grapples with one of humanity's greatest challenges and displays how flawed we are in relating to and loving each other, and at the same time hope we collectively can make a difference and become better.

Johannesburg Botanical Gardens is a sprawling 125-hectare park that offers a diverse range of gardens, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts. The park boasts an impressive collection of trees, including rare and perennial varieties, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the natural beauty of South Africa without leaving the city.

The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens offer a tranquil and serene environment — perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape. The garden areas are clearly marked, and the dedicated trails for runners are thoughtfully designed to minimize disturbance to visitors enjoying nature at a slower pace. There’s ample seating and well-maintained grassy spaces throughout the park, making it ideal for picnics and relaxation. However, I’m giving three stars due to the parking experience. Unfortunately, many visitors park without any sense of order, which can make finding a spot frustrating. The car guards on site seem to lack the authority or structure to manage this effectively, leaving the parking area feeling somewhat chaotic and insecure. I think local donations for the various flower beds would be great, there isn’t a specifically diverse range of flowers.

SUCH A DISAPPOINTING TIME. when you have been to the botanical gardens 🏡 n Durban and you come to this botanical garden in jhb you would think there would be beauty as along the roads many homes have better outside gardens than this place. Lots of trees, even a weed has become a tree which made us roar with laughter. The only flower we saw was one bush of stralitzers and a little water feature. Rather call it a park and put swings and slides for the kids there bec of you going to look at the flowers, sorry there aren't any.

Excellent food well prepared at excellent prices, great service with a good vibe. The owner takes great pride in her restaurant and goes so far to be head chef in her very own kitchen. Her cooking is beyond exceptional. Went there twice (once for supper and again the following day for brunch) and thoroughly got way more than expected. They also have daily specials and some of them are extraordinary. I highly suggest if you are looking for a great meal you pay this place a visit, you will not be disappointed. Highly recommended.

Came here for quiz night and had a decent time. They bring you some starter chips free of charge and the food was quite good. The main issue was that our server was very slow and forgot to bring us a few drinks and then ended up bringing us too many and what came on our bill ended up not being what we ordered. The restaurant is quite small and separated from the bar so it makes the vibe a bit strange as it feels like three distinct areas. The decor is nice and I enjoyed my visit but don’t think ill be rushing back.

Ntsitsis FUN Foods is a family-owned fast-food spot located in the Diepkloof neighborhood, just 20 minutes from Soweto. It's renowned for its Soweto-style kotas, which are essentially quarter loaves of bread filled with potato fries, Russian sausages, meat and veggie stew, cheese, mango atchar, and various other toppings. With over 50 variations on the menu, this street stall has become a favorite among both locals and tourists.
Easily top 3 best kotas in Joburg. You have to make a stop at Ntsitsi’s if you are looking for that original/traditional kota taste. I ordered a kota while my wife and son had a sly, all on point and zero compromise on quality.
Kgothatso S — Google review
The struggle is real.... You order Kota and wait for it 45 minutes whilst the staff takes orders from their friends telephonically whilst sitted there waiting and these ladies there are so very unbothered by this no matter how much one tries to correct them. I live in the North, and I still appreciate having a good Kota in Soweto but when you call to order, there's no response however you get there you see the staff on phone taking orders with their personal phones. They are extremely unprofessional.
Thando N — Google review
Just to verify the reviews I've read about Ntsitsi Fun Foods, I went try it out for myself. Hmmm, as I enjoy my Kota. I was deliberately vague in my order, I changed my mind too many times, but the attendant was very friendly and helped me with suggestions. They have a wide variety of kotas, a wide selection of what to put in your kota to make it interesting. They got my order right and in less than 15mins as expected. The place is wheelchair friendly, there is a chill place while you wait, cool music in the background, not sure where it was coming from but it was not blurring. Lots of parking space across the road.
Hilda P — Google review
Spoke to them to confirm if they have a menu online and two minutes later, no answer till I had to drive there and obviously wait 30 minutes for an order. To top it off, their prices online are totally different to the actual price. Gear up on the service 🙏

In a time of gourmet Kotas which can sometimes be unnecessary this place still makes the best traditional Kota just the way it used to be done, I buy the slice one every time. Fresh quality ingredients. Expect to wait 20 - 30mins for your Kota.

I've been Ntsitsis customer for many years and I gotta tell you, if I feel like a real kota, no matter where I am in Joburg, I will drive to Ntsitsis to get it. She is the best ever, when it comes to di kota.

This place was absolutely amazing. We went there on a Friday night looking to just unwind and relax. We got just that and more. The receptionist was friendly and welcoming. Our waiter was so friendly and helpful. She assisted us with the menu (as it is digital). The food was out of this world. We ordered some platter for 4 ppl. The meat was tender and tasty. The chips were finger licking good. There was some funky group performing that night. They lit the place up. All in all, my experience there was over the top. Our waitress was amazing right through our time there. It was an honor parting with our money to tip her.

I would like to say how disappointed in this establishment for selling counterfeit Partagas No. 4 cigars and the manager on duty blatantly lying and saying it is not Fake?! Never again will I purchase a cigar at this establishment. Nonetheless, the service and atmosphere is top notch

Loved it! I went on a Sunday and it was such a vibe, the DJ kept us on our feet with soulful Sunday music. Enjoyed the food, they were having a Sunday Special. I was seated near the windows so the tables are placed spaciously allowing social distancing and room to dance 🤭
