Kentwell Hall, located in Long Melford, is a magnificent red brick stately home with a rich history dating back over 500 years. The house has been carefully restored and retains its original Tudor essence. Visitors can explore the parkland, gardens, and farm on the property. Kentwell Hall is known for hosting historical re-enactments where participants dress in period attire and demonstrate life as it was during the Tudor era.
An absolute amazing day out. I have been a number of times to the Tudor events and you are truly transported back in time. The volunteers put on wonderful activities, from weaving to baking and medicinal plant uses. The costumes that they have made are outstanding and I love that they speak as they would have done in Tudor times. Thoroughly recommend for all ages.
Claire G — Google review
Through the ages at Kentwell was a fantastic experience. It was a really relaxed day, those participating in the various recreations brought the house and garden to life. All played their characters brilliantly bring humour, realism and education to their roles. The gardens are so unusual and well kept with many unique things to see. Great for all ages with lots of participation. I can’t imagine anyone would be disappointed. A huge thank you to all involved in this wonderfully entertaining event!

Great place. I volunteer there. Lovely house with beautiful gardens and grounds. The place comes alive when they put on one of their events. If you can get to see everything in one visit you are a rare person. There is something for everyone. Wear sensible footwear. Oh and wonderful cakes in cafe
The H — Google review
Kentwell Hall, a charming and atmospheric Tudor manor set in the Suffolk countryside, surrounded by peaceful gardens and a wide, tree-lined moat. We visited on a Saturday morning and found it wonderfully quiet, which made exploring the grounds feel even more special. The gardens are varied and beautifully maintained, with both formal and more natural areas to enjoy. We loved strolling through at our own pace, taking in the peaceful atmosphere. There’s also a café on-site serving drinks and some nice cakes - perfect for a mid-morning break. You can also buy fish food to feed the large fish in the moat, which was a fun thing to do. Altogether, it was an enjoyable visit to a place that feels both historic and welcoming.
Maxim S — Google review
We have spend a whole day at Kentwell Hall, as there are do much to see and do. As we went when they had the Tudor period on it was nice yo see how they lived, what they were eating, and how they kept themselves busy with all different activities. There was a lot of things for kids to do and participate but also to learn about Tudor times. The only downfall, it was the lack of bins and benches, for visitors to use.
Angie O — Google review
We wanted to spend a last few hours sightseeing before returning home from our 4 day break in Suffolk. Booking the tickets online in advance saved us a few pounds and was very easy to do. Kentwell was fabulous, we spent a very interesting and pleasant hour in the grounds including the Tudor Farm. We then visited the house and it was fantastic, a very interesting place to visit, a real treasure.
Mark K — Google review
Stunning, largely original Elizabethan moated house. Much of the massive service area looks like it was vacated yesterday. The ovens, the open hearth, the massive copper (laundry tub) all ready to go. Plus all the murals in their rooms above - which the puritans must have missed. Just brilliant and I work as a guide at an open air museum in Sussex of same period so not easily impressed. Also it's very relaxed - not like the usual suspects

#Scaresville 2025 was awesome ! Actors do a great job of emersing you in the experience and time their scares just right 👌🏻. The whole experience lasted a good hour and they do a great job ensuring you don't catch up to the groups in front. So funny hearing screams in the distance as you walk around. Really was great fun, will definitely be coming back next year ! 👻

Located on a hill at the north end of Long Melford village in Suffolk, Holy Trinity Church is a stunning example of a wool church. It is considered one of the most magnificent parish churches in the country and has been a site for Christian worship for over 1000 years. The church, funded by the wealthy Clopton family, reflects their rise to fortune during the medieval and Tudor periods when wool trade flourished in the area.
A beautiful church. We were greeted by a friendly gentleman who told us some of the history of the church. We were able to look around the church. The architecture and carvings were incredible. A very well looked after building. It also had a shop. We stayed for about an hour and a half. We experienced a lovely calm and peaceful atmosphere.
Karen W — Google review
A chance find while staying in Long Melford. We visited on a sunny Monday morning and on entry were met by two members of the congregation who gave us a brief overview of this lovely parish church. Constructed in the late 15th Century, likely from profits from Suffolk’s wool trade, and with an early 18th Century tower, Holy Trinity is impressive. It retains eight magnificent medieval stained glass windows, among them a tiny gem of colour showing three hares whose ears are intertwined to form, as some believe, a representation of the Trinity. There are wonderful marble and alabaster funerary monuments, an extraordinary assemblage of church brasses, and some lovely painted walls and ceilings. A prayer for the souls of the church builder, something not often found on the exterior of parish churches, is carved into a long band of stone under the eaves. A donation (tap and pay) is much appreciated, there is a small gift shop onsite, and apparently one can even arrange refreshments to precede or follow a tour (contact the events coordinator). Expect to spend at least an hour.
David R — Google review
A church full of history, civil wars, reformation and dark hidden communities. It’s all there at Melford. Linked to Kentwell Hall with underground tunnels according to locals. This popular church is active and a vibrant part of the local community.
Ray G — Google review
Large, light and airy with lovely grounds. Well worth a visit.
Matt S — Google review
So many lovely flowers! This church is really looked after - everything is beautifully preserved, clean, and cared for. The flower displays, bouquets, and pots were simply wonderful. They made my day. So thoughtful, and it made the church smell beautiful. Thank you ❤️
Katherine S — Google review
Beautiful church set at the end of Long Melford. Lovely medieval glass windows. Also, there is a small chapel at the side, which was once a school.
Richard T — Google review
Certainly worth visiting. Amazing stained glass windows and alot if history. Just a shame about the scaffolding but like so many historic churches it is in desperate need of funds for restoration. Well worth visiting.
Glenys B — Google review
Absolutely stunning church at the top of the green overlooking Long Melford. The church itself is a sight to behold inside and out, almost a small cathedral ! There is also a stunning small chapel at the end of the nave on the left in an annex that has an amazing history, so dont overlook that aspect of your visit note: Be sure to look at the information boards that are located at the top of the green which give a little more information about the area and nearby points of interest.

Historical landmark
Melford Hall, a historic Tudor manor house, holds a rich tapestry of stories and connections to the renowned children's author Beatrix Potter. Once graced by the presence of Queen Elizabeth I, this over five-century-old mansion boasts an interior that reflects the ebb and flow of fortunes, hosting illustrious visitors and enduring natural disasters. The Hyde Parker family's restoration efforts following a devastating fire in 1942 have preserved this cherished family home.
Really lovely place to visit. The cost to look around the house, gardens and park was £13 for an adult, which is extremely reasonable compared to some other estates like this I've visited. I was also allowed to take photographs inside the house, which again often isn't permitted, and there was access to most of the rooms. The garden was gorgeous and we were very lucky to have such warm, sunny weather when we visited. Will definitely come back again, but next time bring my mum! This will be perfect for her, as there were shuttle buggies to and from the car park if you struggle to walk too far, and lots of seating available all around the grounds and in the house.
Catherine D — Google review
The house is full of interesting artifacts and well-informed staff are on-hand if you have any questions. We were given a ten minute contextualisation talk as we arrived (repeated throughout the day, I think) and this set the scene very well - it's very helpful, given the long history of the site. Well worth a visit!
Peter C — Google review
Great day out with the family with some great weather. The gardens are not too big and have family games or enjoy with little once. Nice cafe with scones. There are national trust tours revealing some interesting stories about the house and the estate.
Petya I — Google review
Lovely cosy house, very knowledgeable volunteers, the present owners still live in one of the wings. Very nice tea room and cafe for snacks or lunch, good second hand book shop. We enjoyed our two hour visit.
David B — Google review
Been to Melford Hall twice and each time I discover something new. It’s a beautiful home that is still owned by the family, but partially owned by the @nationaltrust. It has had many revamps due to fire and different owners, but it is a lovely intriguing building with ties to Queen Elizabeth the first and Beatrix Potter. My favourite room would be the Drawing room at Th e top of the sweeping staircase! Definitely worth a visit. The guides are a wealth of knowledge so asking them questions makes it more fun. Chris as well as he others are a wealth of knowledge, but don’t forget to ask if they are #sconeAsinGone. Oh, and the gardens are lovely too. I liked that they are wheel chair friendly downstairs and that you can actually borrow a scooter. It was also nice to see that they try to make it as inclusive as possible.
P_Addler — Google review
A love the scale of this place, it feels so intimate. There are some very sweet touches, like baskets of games for children, all around the grounds. Badminton and huge draughts game set up on the front lawn. We'll be back!
Val G — Google review
Another good day out at a national trust house. Good grounds easy to walk and an interesting Georgian house, with s strong connection to Beatrix Potter.
Barry B — Google review
Interesting visit to Melford Hall today. Steeped in history it goes back to the 16th century. Nice little cafe there also with outside tables and picnic area. Beatrix Potter wrote some of her books whilst staying there and they and they even have the original Jemima Puddle-Duck on display. Extensive grounds with pleasant walks, all in all a pleasant day out

Nature & Parks
Nestled on the outskirts of the village, Melford Country Park spans an impressive 8.13 hectares of lush grassland, serene deciduous woodlands, and tranquil lakes formed from former gravel workings. Bordered by the picturesque River Stour to the west, this park is a nature lover's paradise. Visitors can embark on delightful walks that meander through its diverse landscapes—woodlands, grassy expanses, and along the riverbank.
Very pretty little park, very clean and a lovely place to take the dog for a stroll. Was muddy in places due to recent wet weather but that was mainly by the river. Nice car park and plenty of dog poo bins. Would definitely recommend for dog walkers and families with young children as the wildlife sighting opportunities are plentiful
S B — Google review
Dragged the kids out for a lovely walk around the park. Lots of routes to walk and places to explore. Great for a dog walk or to have a picnic. Went at the perfect time to see the baby ducks, super fluffy and cute.
Matt L — Google review
Lovely open space and riverside walk. The dogs loved it. It was quiet but I did visit on a Monday, however there was still an ice cream van there... bonus! Very clean toilets, which look new. Everywhere was clean and tidy... good parking provision, too.
Mike H — Google review
Really nice area suitable for most people. I hesitate to say everyone as some areas would not be wheelchair friendly - but mostly good! Well kept with some places given over to nature. Good place to fish although one local chap said the otters have decimated the fish stock. Lovely for picnics- many tables available and spread out. Excellent for children to play (supervision needed by the river obviously). Lots of places to explore and allow imaginative play. Look out for the swans and cygnets! Toilets handy.
K. W — Google review
Beautiful little park for a wander. Runs alongside the river and has a large pond/mini lake with well trodden paths meandering around the largely wooded park. Lots of points worth stopping to take in the views. Den building area. Several picnic tables spread out and dotted around a very pretty area close to the free parking. The grass in this area is also cut if preferred. Tiny cafe nestled by a pond in the trees is another nice spot to take refreshment. As is the Nethergate brewery just around the corner.
Tommi R — Google review
Pleasant country park tucked away on the outskirts of Melford, by the tranquil River Stour. Parking area, picnic area, kids play area and small cafe, plus handy toilets!.
Steve M — Google review
A pleasant enough park to wander around for a few minutes. The environs here left mostly alone to run wild. There is a track that follows the River Stour, and this loops around to join the lake (which was choked with algae during this hot summer). A narrow picturesque wooden bridge traverses the centre, crossing the lake at a narrow point. Picnic benches near the car park, with main toilets out of order at the moment.
Chen F — Google review
Absolutely beautiful, we have come here for years now but this is by far the best it has been.there are numerous hidden places to sit and enjoy the peace and have a picnic, dogs love it. Great spaces for families to play ball games etc and ample parking. There are toilets and a cafe to grab a drink or snack. Can't wait to come back.

The Long Melford Antiques Centre is a top-notch establishment that is highly recommended for a visit. The store houses an impressive assortment of exquisite items, all tastefully showcased in numerous rooms. The staff is friendly and accommodating, providing helpful assistance when needed. Visitors are given ample time to explore the vast array of merchandise without feeling pressured or rushed. Those with an interest in antiques will undoubtedly appreciate the store's extensive selection and well-curated displays.
Some absolutely gorgeous pieces here. We loved browsing the many floors . And some beautiful furniture at not bad prices. It's like an Aladdins cave ! . I tell all my family and friends about it ;))
Susan A — Google review
Large airy established quality antique & vintage centre selling many larger pieces that you don't tend to find elsewhere. Many large paintings and bedsteads for sale along with dining tables and an assortment of smaller typical antique and vintage paraphernalia such as Steiff bears and telephones. Friendly staff offering helpful wrapping services. I would say the items for sale are largely more considered purchases here than inexpensive.
Saint B — Google review
Nicely organised shop. A good selection .. but goodness is it all overpriced. You’re just looking at a sea of dead money. Everything, particularly chests of drawers, is marked up by hundreds and hundreds. I personally just found it a bit depressing to see such a lot of money being added to items that were clearly never bought anywhere near their asking price. Lower prices will equal more sales. Personally, the shop just zapped the fun out of buying.
James G — Google review
Great Antiques centre. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Items beautifully displayed and lovely quality, not junk. Good mix of furniture from Georgian to Mid-Century Modern including some beautiful beds. Lots of ceramics and glass too. I was ‘just browsing’ and bought four things. Oops. Lovely things.
Emma C — Google review
lovely old antique centre with personal service. we had been looking for some quality leather armchairs for our new olde house & found them here. Nothing was to much trouble, help given with loading into our car, extra bubble wrap for protection Lovely friendly couple helped with our purchase. There are some stunning beds here, lovingly restored, so we will certainly come back to choose one when we are ready . O & the oriental rugs !!

With regret of writing this review… The old guy that was behind the counter slagging off the French and being outrageously vile was not how I wanted my French mother in law to spend the day.. Knowing full well she was foreign as she wished them “afternoon” Absolutely disgusting disregard for her feelings and seems they wanted her to hear what was being said due to the volume of the conversation…!! Shall not be visiting this shop again and definitely warn others what ever nationality you are to keep clear Classicly obnoxious and ignorant
John H — Google review
Not very welcoming. Leave your bags with them, don't touch things, and even then you will be eyeballed as if at any moment you might just consider trousering a Victorian bed . Go to the other antique center, something for everyone with a much more relaxed experience all round.
Morna F — Google review
Disappointing service. Soon as you walk through the door they jump on you and ask to have your shopping bags. Horrible customer service, to make your customers feel watched and judged soon as they walk in. What an old fashioned, stuck up way too look at life. Rude. The other antiques down the road are friendly and welcoming. No wonder they are busy and this place was dead. Will never return.

Visited with my daughter who is 7 months pregnant. As I was paying for an item we had bought my daughter asked if there was a toilet she could use. The woman serving us said no it’s only for the tea room. She then asked if we were visiting for the day. My daughter said yes and also I’m pregnant so need the loo more often. We then asked were the nearest one was and she said the other end of the road. I cannot believe how unhelpful she was. Ok we didn’t use the tearoom but we did buy a ring so very unhelpful in fact unkind!!!!!

What a lovely shop. I went in hoping to find a replacement engagement ring for my wife (after 25 years, the gold band had become very thin and broken. I've had it repaired, but as it is so thin the goldsmith recommended not to wear it any more), and there it was, the perfect sapphire (her birth stone) and diamond ring. Really well priced, so will definitely be back to look at the vintage watches and other pieces of jewellery.

A labyrinthine old maltings boasting a vast array of antique, vintage and retro objects for sale across multi levels and multiple rooms : selling jewellery, gardenalia ,(chimney pots and garden sculpture), and newly upholstered modern armchairs and sofas with a retro twist, collectables, vintage clothing and much much more ! Staff are very friendly and amiable and strive to help i find. **Do NOT miss the Pullman Tearoom at the back of the shop !!! It's a must! Julie is an accomplished baker with the most divine offerings from incredible scones to delightful cakes and all the ladies here are wonderful! I'm afraid I can't find a separate listing ,(as of yet), to give a glowing much-deserved review for this tearoom alone but by-golly it is brilliant! We were very well looked after for my birthday tea party here having booked about 3 days before and the service was impeccable, food was incredible and I can't wait to come back !

This is probably one of the best antique centers in Suffolk. It is based in the town of Long Melford. There are three stories in this establishment. The ground floor is stocked mainly with antique furniture. The two upper stories have items from the very old to modern retro. If you like having a look for antiques or retro modern stuff this is a very good place to go. And of course it is set in Long Melford which is a very picturesque place in its own right. Highly recommended

I recently visited The Famous Old House Gallery in Long Melford, seeking to add to my collection of Clive Madgwick artwork. During my visit, I had the pleasure of meeting Colin and Jane, who proved to be both passionate and knowledgeable about their art. This gallery is a must-visit destination for any true art enthusiast in the area. I was thoroughly impressed with their expertise and would highly recommend this establishment for those who share a serious appreciation for fine art.
On a recent visit to Long Melford, I visited the Famous Old House Gallery. As soon as I walked inside, I was greeted with a friendly welcome by the two owners. They were very polite and let me freely explore the gallery. The artwork was very beautiful, which included pieces from both the 19th and 20th century. I was also impressed with their contemporary range which featured some stunning Aboriginal artwork. And to top it off, they even showcased an exquisite range of glassware! They've also done an amazing job of restoring this building and the interior design looks gorgeous. They also have a pretty garden which you can see as you walk around the gallery. My overall experience of this gallery was very positive. The two owners were lovely and made me feel very welcome. I would definitely recommend visiting this gallery if you are in Long Melford.

Extremely Rude Owner - I rang the bell (I was with my elderly mother and my son) and asked if I could please browse the paintings. The owner said I could only come in if I was definitely going to buy. I replied 'Well I won't know if I want to buy unless I've browsed first' (a perfectly reasonable response) at which point he slammed the door in my face and locked it. I recommend people take their business elsewhere as there are plenty of other galleries in Long Melford and the surrounding villages. I gather from speaking to neighbours that this chap has something of a reputation for rudeness. I am a regular buyer and seller of good quality art and have never experienced such crass behaviour from a gallery owner.

I recently visited Melford's Famous Old House Gallery as I was looking to expand my Clive Madgwick collection. Imagine Gallery is a cherished destination for individuals who call to mind their partner and always make an appearance when in Long Melford. It boasts an exceptionally charming gallery showcasing meticulously curated artwork, encompassing striking paintings and an extensive array of extraordinary three-dimensional creations. This establishment stands out as one of the most exceptional artistic encounters, having been visited countless times with great admiration for its magnificence.
My aunt and I absolutely love this wonderful gallery - always a treat to see what unique and amazing items John has on display. We purchased many gorgeous things over the years. A visit to the gallery is an absolute must for anyone visiting Long Medford.

Spent a lovely 20 minutes browsing this lovely shop. So much to see and ponder over, beware you might be tempted to spend money. Though I did walk out with some lovely cushions for just £5 each. What I loved was the calm elegance, the way things are given the space to shine. I also can’t fault a gallery that has works by two of my favourite authors. “The lost words” by #JackieMorris and works inspired by The boy, the fox, the mole and the horse by #CharlieMackesy. A lovely gallery. The owner John has a passion for art and once we got chatting he had so much insight into the pieces of art in his gallery that we spent a good 10 minutes chatting about art. Will most likely be going back Today to pick up a piece of original art I am gifting to me, and maybe a piece of The storm too! Thanks John, it was a pleasure to meet you! And if you are peckish pop into the #TheCrackedNutDeli across the road!

My partner and I always call into Imagine Gallery when we're in Long Melford. It's a really lovely gallery with beautifully curated paintings and a wide selection of fabulous 3D pieces. One of the best we visit (and we've visited a lot!)

Amazing place. We have lived in Melford for 17 years and have bought lots of art and sculptures from John Foley incuding many works from Kate Leiper. Highly recommend.

Wow what a beautiful gallery but what a miserable host/person running the place. Had every intention of buying a £200+ item but no engagement. Left without purchase 😢

Gainsborough's House, located in Sudbury, Suffolk, is a charming museum dedicated to the life and works of the celebrated painter Thomas Gainsborough. Born in 1726 in this very house, which dates back to 1520, Gainsborough's childhood home has been transformed into a vibrant gallery showcasing his early portraiture and landscapes alongside later masterpieces.
We came down for the Remembrance Day Parade a bit early. We found that this was the hometown of Thomas Gainsborough. He painted landscapes and portraits during the 17th century. You would recognize him by his famous painting “The Blue Boy”. There was a reduced cost to £12 (~$15.50 USD) due to one of the galleries being closed. After getting your tickets, you can go up to the top floor which has a beautiful panoramic view or go to the left door to see a small gallery of his art. They have diagrams on paper of the art hanging if you want more details. They do this throughout the house which is great for a more in depth review on what you're seeing. To get to the house itself from the gallery, go out the door, through a garden and then into the door to the home. There are plenty of his paintings throughout the house. It was originally 2 medieval homes separated by an alley. It was converted into a split house of which you can see the medieval structure in some areas. There are 2 stories, but a lift is available if needed. There is a painting by Cedric Morris in one of the lower rooms. You also get a glimpse of the silk work done in Sudbury which it was also famous for. Attached to this is a cafe called ‘The Watering Place’ and a store that has 2 sections to it for souvenirs or other trinkets.

Beautiful and very rich picture gallery. The new magnificent building is attached to the original Gainsborough House. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and learnt a great deal about it Gainsborough and his life. Highly recommend if you are anywhere near Sudbury. It's easy to park your car - not far from the Gallery.

Went especially to see Masterpieces from Kenwood exhibition of Gainsborough paintings as well as paintings by contemporary French and British artists. Hung lower than at Kenwood with good lighting which meant you could see the impresive fine detail. Lovely new gallery with no windows. The cafe looks out over a charming sheltered garden where we enjoyed coffee and a delicious lunch. There is also an excellent catalogue accompanying the exhibition (which ends shortly).

A great museum with well curated contemporary exhibitions as well as the permanent exhibits on Gainsborough. Historic house as well which is beautifully preserved with interesting exhibits and a good print gallery showing contemporary work on the top floor. New building for the temporary exhibitions with interesting architecture. Nice cafe and garden too. Really worth a visit.

The design of the new gallery has created a wonderful juxtaposition with the old regency house. There is currently an interesting Cedric Morris exhibition with both his better known flower paintings and lesser known landscapes. The smaller Gainsborough house is evocative with friendly staff. The cafe serves fantastic food and is clearly a destination for locals and the museum wraps around a lovely garden with a HUGE mulberry tree at its heart. My only niggle was the price of entry and the lack of concessions which makes it very expensive.

Gainsborough’s House very interesting place to visit. Gainsborough's work is central but there are works from artists relevant to TG such as Joshua Reynolds, and Francis Hayman, and currently Cedric Morris. Featuring a permanent exhibition dedicated to the local silk industry the new visitor centre was an unexpected treat. The main gallery has green silk lined walls from a local company as a backdrop to some of Gainsborough’s finest works . The old house is wonderful and even has a studio set up as well as rooms set as they would have been used when he lived there. In every room there are is a book on a table explaining a bit about the room , but sadly only one room had a volunteer guide, ( main gallery ) - an elderly gentleman who was charming and gave us some interesting insights into the paintings on display. We visited the day after a temporary exhibition had closed, mid afternoon. There is a fantastic new visitor centre with views across Sudbury and a camera obscura subject to volunteer being there to operate it ( sadly not operated for our visit ). Allow around 2 hours for your visit. We parked in a nearby free car park , off street is available nearby. The garden is very pleasant and it is possible to sit and have refreshments there. Gift shop very good and postcards of the artworks were fairly priced. Standard Admission is £15 Under 18’s admission is free. There are lots of ways of saving money on admission, Historic Houses & Art Fund Members are free. National Rail discount etc. Check the website before visiting for more details. We had a really enjoyed visit , and highly recommend Gainsborough’s House to visit- especially if you enjoy historic buildings , art and new architecture ( the visitor centre has just won a RIBA award ).If you staying at any of the nearby villages such as Lavenham - it’s just 15 mins by car.

Nestled behind the Village Memorial Hall on Chemist Lane, the Long Melford Heritage Centre is a treasure trove of local history. This charming center showcases an extensive collection of photographs that chronicle the village's evolution from the 19th century to the 1960s. Visitors can explore fascinating artifacts dating back to prehistoric times, through Roman occupation, and into Long Melford’s prosperous Medieval era as a Wool Town.
We were in Long Melford yesterday and followed the signs to this amazing resource. It is well worth finding to discover more about the history side. We were also lucky to have the time of one of the volunteers. Thanks!
