Abri de la Madeleine, also known as the Magdalene shelter, is a prehistoric site located near Tursac in South-Western France. It was inhabited from the 15th to late 19th century and features troglodyte dwellings and a Gothic chapel.
We really enjoyed our visit. Lots to see and amazing to learn about the landscape and people from thousands of years ago.
Lucy H — Google review
Amazing experience. Very well laid out with an amazing audio guide. We also enjoyed the farm very much where you can get amazing ice cream and walk between the sunflowers.
Thomas R — Google review
Interesting and fascinating place to visit, free parking nearby but the entry ticket is quite expensive considering that the place is not that big. There was a guided tour and we followed it but it was very crowded and we couldn't hear very well what the guide said although he explained well. There is also a rundown castle but a fence doesn't allow getting close to it.
Monica P — Google review
Abri de la Madeleine is a really wonderful place. The situation over the Vézère river is quite idyllic, and the site itself a really interesting one. On the day I visited there were a number of artisans practicing mediaeval crafts around the site, which were really interesting to watch and talk to. I didn't get to visit the farm, but that's something for another day. There are good interpretation materials around the site that explain what you're looking at in French and English. The site is easy enough to walk around, but the ground is quite uneven, so something to be aware of for anyone who's mobility impaired.
Julian T — Google review
Way way better than expected. Superb example of a Middle Ages cave / cliff village. Shame you can’t visit the prehistoric site
Peter T — Google review
Beautiful site, but the truly amazing experience was the FARM. A farm reminding us of what French rural life was like as late as the 70’s. Remarkable!! We loved it!
Robert K — Google review
One of the best an comprehensive troglodytes site ....à must
Marc F — Google review
A very interesting medieval site but there is archaeological work in the prehistoric section so you can't really see the namesake site of the Magdalenian period. I wanted to see that and so was a little disappointed. It was a very beautiful and tranquil place. Your entrance allows you to also visit the farm. There is an enormous amount of archaeology there. Everywhere you look you can find something.

Rouffignac Cave, located in the village of Rouffignac-Saint-Cernin-de-Reilhac, is a fascinating prehistoric site known for its original cave decorations. Visitors can explore the cave on a small electric train and marvel at the intriguing paintings and engravings of mammoths and other animals. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 13 degrees Celsius throughout the year, so it's advisable to bring warm clothing.
What a fantastic visit! An electric train takes you deep inside the cave where you will bear witness of some of the greatest pre historic art. During the high season it is useful to visit before 11:00, there is no reservation system and waiting times can be long ij the afternoon.
Dave H — Google review
It was amazing, the train was really good at taking us around the cave, it felt surreal looking at the art on the walls/ceiling. Would recommend.
Anne — Google review
Guide spoken good English. Very easy cave to visit as almost all was by train. Fascinating paintings
Chris C — Google review
Having to book tickets early in the morning is slightly inconvenient but once we got in, it was worth it. Great to see such old cave paintings and we had a very enthusiastic guide. The train through the caves was also a clever innovation.
Kit E — Google review
We had an ‘English tour’ so our guide spoke to us in only English which was very helpful because it meant we could fully understand everything we were seeing. It was much more interesting than I had expected, and really fascinating. Even teenagers enjoyed it!
Edith — Google review
Excellent alternative to take people who have trouble walking (train tour, we brought my 80 year old dad) to enjoy really awesome original paintings in a beautiful setting, highly recommended. Thanks to the guide for being so knowledgeable and cordial, he was always taking care of my dad, we will never forget that, allez la France!
ALEJANDRO D — Google review
I visited this cave last year and 4 years ago. The train takes you into the heart of the cliff in the dark, then the guide illuminates the cave showing the drawings one by one until finally you get off and appreciate the large room with the famous mammoths on the ceiling. UNBELIEVABLE. ONE OF THE BEST EVER AND LESS KNOWN. I would return again!
Michelle M — Google review
Had a great time , the guide very knowledgeable about the cave, train journey is great, please remember it's a bit chilly 1 km into the cave so wear a jacket or jumper. No photographs, I do understand but you have reminders of your trip, do buy the tour guide €5 well worth it.

Enjoyed walking around the village which at the time was quiet and peaceful. There were signs of rejuvenation of the lower walls and we wondered how the work would progress. It's nice to see photos of progress and we wish the Forteresse owners and people of the village success and happiness.

The man is crazy who runs this place. I wanted to explain the grip of the club to my friends in Dutch, because the man speaks very bad English. The man screamed at me that I can’t explain it and that he is the professional. He threw a golf club at me and pushed my friend. I left the place crying.

Castle
Château de l'Herm, located in Rouffignac Saint Cernin de Reilhac, gained fame through its mention in a novel. The castle's original walls exude a sense of history and offer a glimpse into the past with its secured roof, passageways along the walls, and grand fireplaces. Visitors can explore the three floors and view historical artifacts on display. The ongoing restoration promises further enhancements to this iconic and historically rich site.
Very nice rumdown castle, the kind of place the romantic poets were inspired by. You can feel history through these original walls here more than in restored places! The roof has been secured and you will walk along passageways along the walls as the floors do not exist any more and will be able to see the big fireplaces of each floor and look into the empty well of what once were more living spaces. There is also a video in one of the rooms about the castle and some objects in a glass window.

The hotel is nice, rooms clean and spacious. The restaurant is called "L'Inattendu" and operates as a separate entity. La Salade Perigourdine was wonderful as was the Filet de Canette Griottes. Washed it all down with a bottle of Montagne St. Émilion. Fabulous evening.

Great dinner in the restaurant, very reasonable priced! For 28€ you have a full menu (including cheese before dessert) and everything is fresh and homemade. Service also was very friendly and knowleadgeable in wines. The starter was a red tuna tartar with avocado cream, main dish a beautifully cooked cod/tasty duck magret, and the dessert was a sort of mango tiramisu.
