Scenic Railroads
Railway Tourist Haut Quercy offers a captivating 13km loop tour through the Dordogne Valley, featuring the option of steam locomotives or diesel engines. The town of Martel, steeped in legend and history, serves as a starting point for this scenic journey. As the train traverses through woods, gardens, and winegrowers' houses that blend seamlessly with the landscape, passengers are treated to picturesque views overlooking the valley.
It's absolutely fantastic. Such a great experience, just bring a cushion as the seats are quite hard! The town of Martel is one of the prettiest places we've been in France and there are great restaurants for after the trip
Ollie S — Google review
Great steam train experience- but check days and times and book in advance. Train backs down the line and then returns up the hill in full steam so be prepared for the steam and smoke in the tunnels which adds to the experience💨 Good value for money and fantastic views 🇫🇷😘
Martin G — Google review
This was on our "bucket list" for a long time and we decided to do it. A journey through times past and absolutely stunning scenery, definitely recommended for all age groups. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
John L — Google review
Great experience... kids and young children will love this... about 1.20mins...cracking views and tunnels full of steam and smoke!...what's not to like.👍👍
John E — Google review
If you are a train enthusiast or a tiny bit of an adventure seeker, then this is for you. If you are into air-conditioning and Prosecco you might want to just check out the brilliant station with it's copper bar. These are open carriages, the track is a bit rickety, you will get specks of soot(don't wear white), and the brilliant volunteers do their very best to make sure things run smoothly but sometimes.......anyway who cares as I'm on holiday. Lovely place full of surprises. As a serious warning if your children like to run wild in supermarkets, you'll have to ratchet them down as our wonderful commentator, encouraged you to move round the carriage to take photos.. with good reason. Plus, I have never been on a steam train before that actually stops and lets you get down and wander around, mid-journey. We got here as a last minute thing, basically from wearing ourselves out in 30 degrees in the fantastic Rocamadour. We had no bother just turning up and buying tickets at the booking office in the station but seeing how popular it is, probably best to book. I would also set some time aside for the town of Martel...its rather nice. Parking is slightly scattered if you cannie get into the station car park but there is plenty of street parking around the gare and car parks in the town a short walk away. We parked in the town which was free.....hurrah! Even if we could not have got tickets, I would have been happy wandering around the station, with it's brilliant copper fronted bar, museum, gift shop and a smattering of unusual engines and hardware. This is a bit weird but I have never seen a WWII weapons carrier converted to rail use before. Made my day. Then came the train. I'm not going to go into the history of the train as it is all online should you need it. If you don't speak French, the scrum is a bit daunting but there was plenty of room as we all elbowed our way....onto the wrong train. We all got off a bit sheepishly and when the actual train arrived everyone was visible more restrained. This was the last train of the day and people were keen. If you want the views without moving try and get a seat on the side of the train away from the station, or be prepared to move around because you will want to take shots of the glorious views. Of which there are plenty, looking back as you leave the station, the town is highlighted by the Eglise St Maur and to begin the journey is pleasant until you pass through the first tunnel when it becomes spectacular. The Dordogne valley is wonderful and this is a great way of seeing it, from 80m up, for 13kms, over tiny bridges and narrow tunnels. It's not quick, or smooth but rather wonderful and all for around 13 euros. All facilities are at the station....including bar, and the website advertises ramp'ed access to the train. My wife and I really enjoyed the experience but as Ollie said in a previous post...maybe bring a cushion.
Jonathan I — Google review
What a fantastic experience this was. Such beautiful scenery and such fun for all the family. You can buy tickets at the station itself, as buying a ticket in advance won't guarantee you a seat.
Coralie P — Google review
Book in advance, get there early enough to be front if the queue, the French arent good at queuing, bit of a scrum to board the train. Make sure you get seats on the side on which you board, the best views are from there. Well worth a trip, good value.
Ian T — Google review
Brilliant trip down the cliff face of the Dordogne valley. Pulled by a steam engine with unforgettable views. Efficient ticketing at the station. Busy train but easy to get great views. Lots of smoke because of the gradient. Train whistles upset some younger children. Do it by steam 🚂.

Market
Marché de Martel is a charming medieval village located in the Valley of Dordogne in France. The market is housed under historic halls classified as Monuments Historiques, offering a variety of local products and a pleasant shopping experience. The village itself boasts narrow streets, seven towers, and an overall reflection of the charm of France. Visitors can explore top-notch boutiques and enjoy the picturesque surroundings. Despite not having many stands at certain times, the market remains very pleasant with friendly traders.

The Tour de Tournemire, also known as the Square Tower or the Prison Tower, is a historic structure that was originally built in the 12th century as part of Martel's defensive wall. Over time, it served various purposes including as a watchtower and a prison for different authorities. Reconstructed in the 14th century to its current height of 25 meters, it stood as a symbol of power throughout the Ancien Regime.

Reptiland is an exciting animal park that showcases a variety of reptiles from around the world, making it enjoyable for visitors of all ages. The park features diverse species such as snakes, crocodiles, alligators, turtles, and varans. Visitors particularly enjoyed observing the impressive Anacondas, which can grow up to 7 meters in length. The staff at Reptiland are knowledgeable and readily available to provide insights into the animals' behaviors and habitat needs.
I had high hopes and was not disappointed. It's obvious their large diverse collection is well cared for. Not only did they all look healthy, they were alert and many were active. Would definitely recommend this to anyone!
Just S — Google review
We recently visited Reptileland France whilst on holiday in France and had a mixed experience. On the positive side, the staff were knowledgeable, friendly, and welcoming. The venue also made a real effort with translations, so English speakers like us could fully enjoy the visit. The collection itself was impressive — a huge diversity of reptiles from around the world, and all the animals appeared clean and well cared for. However, the very range of species on display raised concerns for us. The site itself isn’t particularly large, and many of the enclosures struck us as far too small, especially for some of the larger reptiles. As reptile keepers ourselves — with our son being especially knowledgeable in the field — we found the housing unsuitable in many cases. This is dismissed as a problem by the team, stating that reptiles feel safer in smaller spaces. This is a vague statement which ignores the nuances of different species and nearly all species were kept in smaller enclosures than research or practice recommends. It was quite shocking to see animals of that size restricted in such limited spaces, even if their immediate care looked good. In short, while Reptileland France is welcoming and informative with an impressive range of reptiles, we left with significant concerns about enclosure size and the long-term welfare of some of the animals.
Ali B — Google review
We had an awesome visit, lot of species, well taken care of and displayed beautifully. Staff is super friendly and passionate about the various species. We will be back !

They know the natural needs of the reptiles and take care of them well, all lighting is natural sunlight. So it feels less as an "animal jail" than average zoo. There are literally hundreds of reptiles, so lots to see.

Amazing, traditional food in the heart of a beautiful village. We came here for dinner in 2013 and after trying the magret de canard, we've returned each year, bringing our friends and family too! The portions are generous, the wine brilliant and local, the service great and it has a rustic, chic feel to the interior. I'd highly recommend trying the frois gras - you can buy some from the shop below to take home.

Cool place in the middle of a very ancient square. Simple menu, so you can't really go wrong, children's menu available. Selection of wines also sold by carafe, which went down well with my duck. All in all would recommend, don't get there too late and enjoy.

Timings online said it’s open in the evening - it’s not. Sign in the window says it’s open from 11am-6pm. Come back a day later at 3pm - people are sitting out the front but the sign says closed. Waitress comes out to tell us that it is now closed and won’t open until the next day. What’s the point in having timings if you’re never open when you’re supposed to be. A real shame because we used to love this restaurant but now can never seem to catch it when they fancy being open.

Pizza Martel'li is a highly recommended pizza restaurant in Martel. The pizzas are both delicious and hearty, providing a perfect dining experience. Unlike other restaurants in the area, Pizza Martel'li is willing to accommodate customers even at late hours, ensuring that everyone feels welcome. Despite its small exterior, the owner goes above and beyond to ensure that all customers can comfortably settle in. The quality of their pizzas is exceptional, with the option to customize toppings according to individual preferences.
We (family of 4) visited beautiful Martel in August and had lunch at this wonderful Pizzeria. The waitress was lovely and helped us with our French. We ate outside in the little square and it filled up quickly for good reason. The pizzas were amazing and along with drinks were very reasonably priced. I went for the uniquely local Quercynoise with lots of duck on top. One of the best pizzas I ever had and plenty of toppings. 4 full pizzas, wine and sodas for less than 50 euros. Can’t go wrong.

It's kinda hard to find a different style of restaurant in France than a french one but at least we did with this one. It's a small but family restaurant with some seats outside. The personnel were very friendly. Also the food was great, but the vegetarian pizza was kinda overloaded with toppings. Also the Tiramisu I've tasted already better in other restaurants. So it would be good to change the recipe a little bit. All in all a good pizzeria that would be even better with small changes. (3.7⭐)
