Churches & Cathedrals
Our Lady of Chartres Cathedral, a towering 13th-century Gothic masterpiece, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most renowned cathedrals in France. Its construction began in 1194 after an earlier cathedral was destroyed by fire. The cathedral's significance is tied to a miraculous event during the fire, which led to its intention of being one of the finest churches globally.
Absolutely beautiful inside and out and definitely worth a visit. You can spend half a day just exploring the cathedral itself but if you get tired, the restaurants just outside are also excellent and reasonably priced too. I can also highly recommend staying until after dark for the free Chartres Illuninaire show which projects a light and sounds show on various buildings throughout the town, including the cathedral itself. Better yet, have a stay for a few days as it's a beautiful place itself.
Colin M — Google review
Unbelievably beautiful cathedral! Have seen quite a few in my lifetime but this one was special. Beautifully restored and not too busy. Loved the inside even more than the outside.
Arnout M — Google review
If you are only in Chartres for a few hours spend them visiting the incredible and Architecturally astounding Cathedral. Being the first UNESCO awarded and supported further by the volume of original stain glass. If able to stay for the evening the light show on and around this Cathedral and the surrounding Chartres centre is highly recommended.

Beautiful cathedral of Chartres. They made beautiful renovations, everything is really clear and neat. Even with clouds and no sunshine, the inside is bright enough to see through the painted glasses of the windows. They are marvelous piece of art. If you have the chance to be in the area, you should take the time to walk there and look for yourself how gigantic and stunning it is. What actually surprised me the most is how modern they are inside. They have contactless payment card machine for donation at each corner of the cathedral. So if you don't have coins like me, you can still use your card to pay to lit a candle or novena. The hours of the priest are written on a card board inside. The confessional is brightly litten and has a priest waiting inside for anyone who wants to confess theirs sins. This is unseen for me before today in France. There is also a treasury room which you have to pay to access it. Overall a great place to visit. I advise to park your car at the parking lot of Cathedral. There almost non existant place to park there.
Anne-Cécile — Google review
Magnificent, historic, surrounded by lots of cafes, bars, restaurants and shops and not flooded with tourists when we visited. Chartres is an utterly beautiful city well worth a couple of days of your time. BEWARE, the cathedral is atop a hell of a climb up through steeply sloped streets.
Keith B — Google review
Magnificent large cathedral of which the main structure was completed in only 26 years early 13th century. It then replaced a previous church that was lost by fire and of which only the crypt and the West facade with the Royal Portal remained. The interior is a feast to the eyes, with splendid stained glass windows, some of which date back to the 13th century. The highlight is the beautiful choir screen that circles the main altar. It's a monumental sculptural ensemble of 100 meters long and over 6 meters high. There are richly sculptured scenes about the life of the Virgin Mary and Jezus. You "read" the story by starting at the South transept and follow around. I got emotional looking at it. At the time of my visit, there was a lot of scaffolding work inside the church.
Seimen B — Google review
One of the greatest High Gothic cathedrals now reinvented with its controversial very light painting of the pillars and vaulted ceilings… it grew on me as we walked round, I concluded it’s wonderful not least by setting off the magical 13th C stained glass. We love the way it feels it’s still an active place of worship, not the case in all French cathedrals.
Andrew E — Google review
An amazing cathedral. The stone carving of the rood screen incredible. Tiny, tiny detail. Stained glass windows also v impressive. The only cathedral I've ever been in that didn't seem a bit damp, this one positively warm on a cool day. Entrance is free. It was very busy on the day we visited, lots of groups. A nice international hubbub.

Nestled right across from the stunning Chartres Cathedral, Le Café Serpente is a charming bistro-style café that beckons travelers looking for a delightful dining experience after exploring the town. With its inviting atmosphere and beautiful floral decor, this café offers an extensive menu filled with French classics like Croque Monsieur and crepes Suzette, alongside an array of tempting pastries. The large windows provide picturesque views of the bustling town square while showcasing unique collections of tea and coffee pots.
Family friendly restaurant with delicious food and great service directly at the cathedral. Gorgeous interior design. Delicious beer selection. We had a super friendly waiter that went the extra mile for our little boy. Thank you ! Booking recommend.

I went in May 2022, we ate outside after a bit of a wait but servers were helpful. Avocado egg pastry was interesting, quite good but plating was its better quality. French onion soup was very bad, not thick not creamy or beefy or smooth at all— so watery and flavourless compared to the one we had at the Monet restaurant!! But I’m told that’s how they typically make it in France. Burger maison was wonderful, so delicious especially the cheese, very special burger and good fries too. I am writing this review because I was thinking about it. I wish I could go back!
An A — Google review
This café was an excellent escape from the cold. While touring the nearby cathedral, I stopped in for a breaks. The hot wine, the crème brûlée and the French onion soup were excellent.

I had great vanilla tea here (beware the boiling metal teapot). We shared a really tender lamb shank for lunch, I would recommend. The service was great, even though it was really crowded
Asya B — Google review
This is a super cute French bistro just off the church. We sat for a meal and a glass of wine. I ordered escargot and a steak tartare. The snails were delicious, perfectly cooked and seasoned. The tartare was fine, but it didn’t have any capers. We sat out side, shrubs could glasses of wine and enjoyed a great mean. Highly recommended if you have time.

We came with 3 children, very fredly 😊and had just some different type of meny to taste famous French dishes 😁
Anna P — Google review
The French Onion soup was bland and the broth tasted old, not fresh. For excellent French Onion Soup go to Cafe Degas in New Orleans. The whole city rocks with fantastic french food. Go during Jazz Fest. A long wait now for main course.
L R — Google review
I ordered the onion soup with croque madam. The cheese on top of the soup was burned black while the croutons were on the bottom and soggy. The croque had some cheese on top but the sides were black- burned low quality loaf bread. The egg was well done and crispy. It was the driest, most tasteless burned sandwich I ever tasted. It was clearly evident that everything was poorly reheated with a blowtorch and served up for the tourists. Save your money, better food at McDonald's.

Nestled in the charming Place des Halles, La Chocolaterie is set to open its doors soon, bringing a delightful culinary experience to the area. This new venture by Ludovic Villedieu, an established artisan baker and pastry chef from Saint-Georges-sur-Eure, promises a feast for the senses.
A nice cafe where you can have lunch with children if they prefer fries and nuggets. Everything was quite nice and tasty. The service is quite smiling, food is served and delivered quickly. Everyone left happy and full, since the portions were served quite large) And another plus is that payment of the bill can be divided separately among all your friends, this is very convenient.

Unassuming tea house with large terrace overlooking pedestrian square. Most of downstairs is dedicated to displays and preparation of takeaway orders. There are several small tables on the ground floor yet most of the seating is upstairs via a narrow and steep staircase, including two large chesterfield couches. One toilet is upstairs. A varied selection of classic French pâtisseries, snacks, ice-cream dishes and drinks. Known for its hot chocolate, local sweet delicacies and macarons. Reasonable prices. Well frequented.

The Macorons are very good. They are crunchy, and tasty! The funniest part of the quick bite I had at The Chocolaterie was when I got the Limonade, The Limonade brand was not the usual brand that you would get like Garçon Limonade, it was the PS**TH Limonade!! The service is ok, nothing too say about it. Atmosphere is like a regular cafe. It is a cozy cafe. Highly Recommended!

Playground
Parc André Gagnon, also known as Clos St. Jean, is a large 2.9-hectare park located near the train station on Boulevard Charles-Peguy. The park has a horticultural focus and offers various recreational activities such as an accrobranche course, a playground enclosed by fences, basketball courts, and table tennis tables. Visitors can enjoy jogging or walking their dogs on-leash within the park's designated areas.
A wonderful place to hang out with children. The jumps are absolutely safe, the zones are divided according to the age of the children. Very nice and beautiful place with landscapes.
Anastasiia P — Google review
A nice park to relax in, with an area for children to play as well as a beautiful flower garden.
Troy S — Google review
Best park at Chartres. The entrance fee is totally free. Good for both adults and kids. It has decent public toilet too. Kids play area is vast to keep them busy. Best for picnic with families to share food with each other. It even has rope hanging activity.
Faizal A — Google review
The ropes course was so much fun! It was 16 euro per person for unlimited times and well worth the price. We had a wonderful time and the gardens/ flowers were also beautiful!
Kris — Google review
Beautiful, easy to access, and very close to Chartres Cathedral. The zipline and rope course cost us €16 a person but was well worth it since we had a kid, and would have been worth it as an adult as well. It was a delight.
Taylor B — Google review
What a nice medium sized park ! A little decentered, it easily passes unnoticed despite its size and nice location (very close to the train station). It provides huge spaces of colorfull arrangements, floral and wooden. The walk around is probably 10-15m depending on your walking speed, and it is mostly discreetly filled by locals enjoying it's peaceful nature. A few young couples on bank, some retired ones, and on the north part of the park : childrens or young will gather around the constructed playgrounds for the youngest, the immense metal web for the more adventurous, or even the ping-pong or basket ball setups for the oldest or the sportive adults. The overall feeling is that the high train's railroad on the east side and the big high trees provide a protected and shadowy nice shelter for a beautifull natural setup, where the discret human life in its full diversity is an important part.
Valentin L — Google review
Lovely town park in Chartres. Beautiful flower beds. Now have zip line activity in tree tops.

Everything was excellent. The service was very friendly and rather quick. We were given amuse-bouche which was great. The food is made from high quality and fresh ingredients. One of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to in France. I recommend!
Monica — Google review
Excellent experience; lovely service, great food and a location that is hard to beat. The only thing we didn’t like so much was the selection of starters; we felt that it was rather short on highlights and a bit boring. They can do better here.
Arnout M — Google review
We were passing through Chartres and came here because it had a knife and fork mention on the Guide Michelin. We made a reservation and glad we did for lunch because the place was full. I had the special which was cuisse de canette with orange sauce and he had the beef with mushrooms. Both were excellent. Be sure to order the Iles Flottante for dessert it's a dramatic presentation and delicious!

This was a superb meal and dining experience. Every dish was outstanding and we thought the value was fully there. Our 3 hour lunch with cocktails and two bottles of wine for 3 people was thoroughly enjoyable. Could not recommend more highly

Exquisite food, wonderful service, very good choice of wine, we tried the pork and the beef, along with a red and a white wine of Bourgogne. Highly recommended especially this time of year with the "Chartres en Lumiere" illuminating the facades of the Cathedral!!

Sushi restaurant
Côté Sushi Chartres invites you on a culinary journey that traces the roots of Japanese immigrants in Peru, blending rich cultural history with delightful flavors. Diners have praised the exquisite sushi offerings, highlighting their freshness and taste as standout features. While some guests experienced inconsistent service during quieter times, recent visits showcased improvements with attentive staff and an engaging ordering process via tablets. The ambiance is cozy, making it a perfect spot to unwind after a long day of travel.
Tired and weiry from a very long days travel, this place was just the antidote. Good service, friendly and the food was so good, the only downside was we couldn't order the whole menu! Speaking of which, great looking menu and design. Prices were good too, I was pleasantly surprised 😊😍

Great quality fish that is very fresh. The wasabi and ginger were in plastic packets… as well as the soy sauce in a tiny plastic bottle. The food was good/mediocre but overpriced.
Sopaipilla — Google review
Pretty good sushi. There are some interesting flavours with a kind of salsa feel to them. The "Tacos" were very good. Service was fine, although it was a little slow due to all the delivery riders coming in, so it's obviously popular for takeaway.

You pay restaurant prices for McDonalds style service. Next time I will go to the Asian restaurant next door Pitaya. ...... 06/01/23 We revisited Cote Sushi. We were greeted by a charming young waitress with a written menu. No more squinting at my iphone mini in the low light ambience of this restaurant. She took our order via a tablet which allowed us some pleasant interaction; a big improvement on being told to order via our iphones. We ordered the the seasonal 'Scottish Box' with the whimsical 'Fish 'n' Chips' sushi, some grilled salmon skewers, a side of padron piments and the aubergine miso. The sushi was perfectly acceptable for a chain restaurant, the salmon, clean, simple and tasty, the padron peppers were moorish and the aubergine miso is my favourite dish here. If I were to make a recommendation, it would be to add an adult non-alcoholic beverage to the menu. Not everyone wants to drink alcohol, nor some variation on a sugary drink. Asahi, Sapporo and Kirin all make excellent non alcoholic beers. This would be a welcome addition. I have changed my review to four stars.

We went here every day during our time in Chartres and literally everything we tried was delicious. Very kind people as well who were patient with us with our broken French and communicated well enough that we could understand. Would recommend to anybody looking for a good bakery.

Honestly incredible boulangerie in Chartres. I imagine the best but it's also the only one I've tried. Fantastic tradition for only €1 the best croissant aux chocolat et amandes that I've ever had. The escargot pistache was nice and flaky, not sure griottes were the best combo for my tastes but it was great. Overall the ambiance is calm and clean, a hint of Nordic minimalism in what appears to be a recent renovation. Kind ladies behind the counter as well. I'm also impressed with their pain au chocolat. And the fact that they have a different special bread every day of the week is very fun and a good reason to visit every morning!

Had a wonderful meal here on a very warm evening and found the fabulous food was perfectly tailored to the hot weather. Our starters included a delicious mixed tomato salad with burrata and a fresh, perfectly flavoured crab concoction. This was followed with seared tuna with sesame and sea bass with vegetables, and finished with peach Melba and a rich chocolate fondant with hazelnut ice cream. All absolutely perfect. The waiter was extremely kind and attentive, arranging our taxi and even helping my mother, who has limited mobility, all the way to the car afterwards. I'd highly recommend this restaurant and have only marked down the 'atmosphere' a little as the outside terrace at the back is quite small and more practical than beautiful!

Delicious food. Best roast duck I've ever had. My husband's beef lightly seared and not overcooked at all, just as he likes. Tried raw cod fish for starter (first time) and pleasantly surprised. Go if you get the chance. Bar next door a good place to grab an aperitif beforehand. Need to walk here, no parking.

Had lunch there a couple of months ago with friends who own a home in France ! We all agreed , without a doubt, the worst food we have ever had anywhere. This place is not much crowded when compared with other competitors, and one can get all necessities with a bit high rate. It's better to stick with things under promotion for budget purchasing. And we can find many side shops to roam around. No problem with parking, but many trolleys won't come out with the coin key provided, it needs some serious servicing because it really spoils the shopping mood in the beginning.

Just another medium sized shopping centre with a good variety of shops and restaurants. Geant is the anchor store and it has just about every thing at very reasonable (for France) prices.

well organized, inexpensive and valuable museum. we can understand basics of agriculture and meet some wonderful vehicles. may stay here for 2 hours or so. Moreover, this place offers great space and opportunity for children to play and understand agriculture naturally. Cheap entre fee (children - free, adult - 5euros) is absolutely one of many strong point.

Église Saint-Pierre

Catholic church
Église Saint-Pierre is a captivating Gothic church with a rich history. It was once part of the Benedictine monastery St-Pere-en-Vallee, dating back to the 7th century. The sturdy tower, built around 930 as a defensive keep for the abbey, offers insight into the building's ancient origins. The church features elements from different periods, including a square tower from the Carolingian era and Gothic-style nave and choir from the 13th century.
A stunning semi -ruin being restored by the state. If ever it is restored fully it will be wonderful. The stained glass alone makes it a marvel. Just a stroll along the river from the municipal campsite. Not to be missed.
Duncan P — Google review
Totally amazing church whose stained glass windows are illuminated from the inside at night, producing the most beautiful effect! The "Chartres en Lumières" visual light media show runs throughout the city from April to October and the Église St Pierre is one of the most beautiful edifices. We took the Little Train (Le Petit Train) from the Cathedral square and saw all the illuminated sites, and went back to St Pierre to get a second look. Fantastic!

Nice eglise with traditional architecture. The coloured glass windows make a fabulous view of sun light reflecting inside the building. The church looks as much beautiful from the inside as it does from the outside. There is a very peaceful and divine feeling you could experience once inside.
K R — Google review
After spending several days at Chartres Cathedral I was humbled to enter this Cathedral through the Gothic red door symbolizing the womb of the Great Mother. In it's erie solitude and disrepair I was transported to earlier times in history. A reverence for history descended, not guilded but pure. The slanted cobbled floors were easier to maintain when horses came into the environment. The layers of painted and peeling motifs exposed the art of the ages. The wood latice and white marble statue in the Apse, a smaller version of the Chartres Cathedral was beautiful in the natural light even laced with cobwebs. The interior natural light was exquisite through the stained glass. There is a seated Black Madonna near the transcept entry with fresh Lilies lay at Her and His feet. A juxtaposion of the physical world to an aged time caught and suspended.

Nestled in the heart of Chartres, the Old Chartres Fortifications are a remarkable glimpse into the city's medieval heritage. These ancient walls echo tales from as far back as the Gallo-Roman Era, when Chartres was known as Autricum. Fantastic location next to the cathedral and all the cafes and restaurants. The hotel is in a medieval building and has lots of character. Our room had all the old world charm but with a modern functional bathroom including a very nice walk-in shower. There is no elevator and two flights of stairs but we didn't see that as a problem. The breakfast was lovely. Parking is in a commercial multistorey car park about 300m from the hotel and the parking fee is included in the cost ... unless street parking next to the hotel is found. The instructions for how to drop off the luggage next to the hotel before parking the car were detailed and clear as were the instructions for late arrival with self check-in as was the case for us.
Claes H — Google review
Classic European B&B experience with kind hosts and pleasant accommodations. It's literally right next to the Cathedral making it easy to visit it and see the light show. If by car, parking is a bit quirky. Wouldn't hesitate to rebook.

This was our favorite hotel in France. It was decorated so nicely. The bathroom had a huge tub with jets. We were so close to the cathedral. We could watch the light show from our window. Our host was very nice. The price was terrific. We were able to walk to shops and restaurants. The bed was comfy and they had air conditioning. Thank you for such a good stay.

The location could not be better. Right next to the cathedral in the city centre, yet quiet and peaceful at night. The welcome was warm and friendly. Comfortable bed - I slept well and woke to a good breakfast with personal service. Highly recommend

We stopped one night at the Parvis to break up a long trip. So glad we did. The location is amazing. Right next to the cathedral and the cathedral square. We stayed in the Henry room which has a lot of space (bedroom, sitting room, bathroom) with period fittings, but also modern features such as air conditioning and a fridge. I must compliment the Parvis on their soundproofing on the windows. Even if the room faces the main square, we couldn't hear a thing with the windows closed. A little bit pricey, but you're paying for the location, and what a location!

If you find yourself in Chartres, make sure to stop by Crêperie Les Trois Lys, a delightful spot that specializes in crafting exquisite crêpes and galettes. This charming eatery prides itself on using fresh, local ingredients to create mouthwatering dishes from scratch. The menu offers an impressive variety of both savory and sweet options, ensuring there's something for everyone.
Wonderful creperie. I visited with some friends who lived in Chartres. Very delicious crepes, very reasonable prices. I highly recommend La Porte Guillaume and of course any crepe with the salted caramel butter. I ate the La Bretonne and was not disappointed. This restaurant has a lovely, quaint old-French vibe to it with a very friendly staff. I visited with friends who spoke French to the waitress. I did not know any French but the waitress spoke a bit of English, and the menu has English translations, so this place can accommodate English speaking patrons.

Maison Picassiette is a unique house in Chartres, France, adorned with vibrant mosaics crafted from discarded glass and crockery. The home was purchased in 1929 by Raymond Isidore, a local cemetery worker who spent over three decades adorning its interior and exterior with mosaic tiles made from broken crockery. Visitors are treated to a mesmerizing display of diverse and numerous mosaics covering the walls, furniture, and floors.
So so fabulous. An incredible work of art. Should be a unesco site. Well worth the visit The only thing absolutely ruins it is the intensive information boards. What the hell are they for. Showing black and white photos of the art works on a massive scale and huge yellow quote boards. A disaster. The garden is ruined by them. Picassiette would turn in his grave. Such a shame.

Amazing place to visit. So much to look at. The amount of thought gone into decorating this house is astonishing. So many little faces in the walls . Lots of colourful areas. I do have a concern though. The little fish pond was so green and no noticeable pump to oxygenate the water. The fish were struggling . Not a great expense to sort it out.

We were very moved by our visit here. It is rare to feel so connected to an artist and the feeling behind their work. He turned recycling in to an art form, well ahead of his time! To turn a humble little dwelling in to such a surprising work of art was inspiring. A must see.

What a beautiful mosaic house tucked away into a tiny nook of a neighbourhood. An attraction that turned out surprisingly a lot more interesting than what I thought it would be. I love how the whole house is filled with mosaics and the quotes from the guy is plastered around. Wish the quotes had English translation under or something. The only reason why we could understand it was because of the paid book available in the souvenir store. An interesting place to seek for inspiration for art.

The Église catholique Saint-Aignan, situated in the picturesque town of Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher in Chartres, France, is a captivating 1514 Renaissance church that seamlessly blends Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. The church's towering bell tower is a prominent feature on the town's skyline.
Well worth a visit. Set in the lovely old town of Les Andelys...itself worth visiting...it has some lovely features.

This is a lovely little church with frescos all over the walls. Whilst looking inside, the organ was playing. What i thought was piped turned out somebody was actually playing. If you are in Chartres, even 1 day, take a 5 minute stroll from the market area and have a look around this quaint church
Dwight F — Google review
Free entry, a large church that’s most interesting inside, I would say it is more interesting than the cathedral because you have close views of the stained glass windows and the interior stonework and roof are all painted. In need of restoration work.

Wonderful little church, a hidden gem a few hundred meters from Chartres cathedral. A great example of a medieval church dedicated to St Aignan with painted walls, tapestries and stained glass. Definitely worth a visit

The Collégiale Saint-André, located in Chartres, France, is a must-visit attraction. This medieval cathedral boasts stunning Gothic architecture and a rich history dating back to the 12th century. The building also houses an exhibition center and features temporary exhibitions, including works by artists like Christophe Charbonnel. Visitors can explore the picturesque terraced gardens of the former bishop's palace nearby and enjoy beautiful views of the River Eure from the site.

Now deconsecrated, this Romanesque church was the religious centre of one Chartres' liveliest areas, the "river workers'" quarter, home to millers, dyers, cobblers, fullers, tanners and tawers. In the 16C it was extended with the addition of a choir and an apsidal chapel built on arches spanning the River Eure. Sadly, the choir and vaults disappeared in 1827. Nowadays, this former collegiate church is a cultural centre hosting events and exhibitions.

(Translated by Google) It's a shame not to make this kind of place more accessible. While visiting Chartres, it seemed to me that the heritage, outside of the cathedral, is suffering from its success. The collegiate church was closed; it seems to be open only for exhibitions. When I got home, I looked for the 2020 exhibition schedule, opening days and hours, but I couldn't find anything up-to-date. The history of this collegiate church is terrible; the French Revolution and the years that followed destroyed a jewel. The choir arch over the Eure and the second arch for the Chapel of the Virgin were original architectural features that inspire dreams. For lack of anything better, the walk along the river, a tributary of the Seine, is pleasant. It's a shame not to make this kind of place more accessible; it's less sumptuous and prestigious than the cathedral but so rich in history.

This is the building of that what locals call Le Musee des Beaux-Arts de Chartres or the Museum of Fine Arts of Chartres. This is no big but excellent Museum situated just next door to famous cathedral because you can find there personal belongings or artifacts attributed as personal belongings of poor King Charles VI of France (1368-1422). Insanity of this king ruined his personal life and the entire Kingdom of France and untied hands to his uncles and couzen. Their political struggle created two powerful factions of Armagnacs and Bourguignons, caused mutual murders of rivals, and at last brought entire country to open civil wars. So, the main purpose of my visit was to see the gambeson of King Charles VI! It was the funniest visit for all my life! French museum workers didn't understand French word gambeson! Can you imagine?! Even when I explained that this is a padded defensive jacket of XIV-XV centuries usually worn over or under the armor, even then they couldn't understand. At last, I just took a piece of paper and a pen and drew a gambeson! Museum people gladly and with wide smiles started nodding and saying, "Yes, yes! It is here!" Where? And they answered "in the storage!" So, the most precious artifact is in the storage room! So, I have covered 2800 kilometers just to discover that fact! But my travel was worth of seeing houndskull helmet and haubergion allegedly belonged to Charles VI! Museum of Fine Arts, Chartres, Eur-et-Loir, 🇫🇷 France 🇫🇷. January 5, 2015.

The Chartres International Stained Glass Centre is a unique museum located in Chartres, France, known for its impressive collection of over 70 stained glass pieces from the Renaissance Era and beyond. Situated not far from the famous Chartres Cathedral, the center offers a detailed explanation of each scene depicted in the cathedral's windows on its first floor.
Wonderful gem in Chartres! The ground floor show medieval stained glass that has been restored with detailed explanation of the process as well as the context of the imagery. Highlight of the main exhibit are the reproductions of the cathedral’s glass which is accompanied by detail explanations of each piece. Downstairs displays more contemporary stained glass art.

If you want a day trip from Paris, I highly recommend Chartres, a very charming little town dominated by the Notre Dame de Chartres, a Unesco listed cathedral. Stunning leadlights and the cathedral’s detailed sculptures make you wonder how they built it a thousand years ago and how incredibly talented and clever people were then. My photos do not do the cathedral justice. It’s only 1 hr by train from Paris, unfortunately we couldn’t stay for the cathedral evening light show.
Isabelle T — Google review
I think most people have missed this nice museum to visit in Chartres. They have good description to the iconography of each object, as well as good video of the technique of making color glass. More worthy to see are their medieval objects of color glasses. The contemporary exhibition downstairs is interesting. In their yard there was an catto seems on alert to the visitors, which made the visit quite “medieval”.
S. H — Google review
If you love stained glass you must come here. It gives you an opportunity to see medieval stained glass up close. To see repairs and “stop gaps.” There are large scale photos of a large number of windows from Chartres Cathedral so you can study the detail. There is also a contemporary exhibition of modern stained glass which is very thought provoking.
Sara W — Google review
Unless you want to learn more about the biblical meaning of many of the stain glass windows in the Chartres cathedral, you shouldn’t bother to go. It is mind numbing in detail and not very interesting after the first 5 minutes. We hoped/ thought it we would learn more about the process and evolution of same of stain glass over the centuries. Not so much.

Restaurant
Nestled right next to the cathedral, Le 21 is a charming little gem that captures the essence of intimate dining. Run by the delightful duo Claire and Julien, this restaurant boasts a concise menu featuring three appetizers, three main courses, and three desserts—each dish crafted with care to ensure freshness and quality. The cozy atmosphere invites you to savor every bite while enjoying a thoughtfully curated selection of wines.
Wow! This place was so good! We got lucky and got in when they opened at 11:45 on Saturday. Many others were turned away. Small and intimate atmosphere with 7 tables. Make a reservation and request a table with cathedral view. Service is perfect with great suggestions and good English. Food is delicious. We can highly recommend the scallion tart and pepper soup for appetizers, the duck with potatoes and cod with carrot purree for mains, and cheesecake for dessert. 2 courses for 26€ and 3 for 31€. Great selection of wines.

We had a great dinner at Le21 while visiting Chartres. Charming hosts and an intimate restaurant housed across the path from the Chartres Cathedral. We had two completely different 3 course dinners and everything was perfect. Very relaxing experience.

Booking is strongly recommended as this restaurant offers few seatings. Intimate and clean settings. Friendly and Attentive service. Menu as well as drinks (wine, basic cocktails) are displayed on chalkboards. Few dishes but all prepared on the spot! Cheese bricks (fried triangular dumpling) were a great start to the dinner: not greasy and cheesy but not too overwhelming. The pistachio crust on the fish was a delicious surprise that went well with stir fried greens. The veg-friendly dish (lasagna) was a bit dry. The big plus: really great coffee and its selection of pastries! Great food, great view (right across the cathedral), great service: Great option in Chartres!

We skipped Versailles and spent our day trip from Paris in Chartre - and we will remember it always. Our lunch at Le21 would alone have made the trip worthwhile. The combination of the cathedral with our best meal in France served so perfectly in a small and charming dining room felt like a dream come true. We will remember our afternoon fondly for years to come. Many thanks to our host and hostess . ( we booked well in advance - if you have the chance, don’t miss it )

Great evening and meal. Small cozy room with, maybe 16 seats across from the church. Delicious meal with skilled waitress and a nice wine choice. Limited menu, but everything was tasty at a very fair price.

Very frustrated and disappointed - we had a great meal here last year but maybe because it’s become too popular they have lost sight of what’s important. We phoned , messaged , emailed and confirmed in both French and English that we had a reservation. But on arrival she said we were late by 30 minuets and had given our table away. We were not late and it’s incredibly sad that when we arrived the waitress was aggressive and rude. Book somewhere else .

It's all been said about the fabulous location, ambience, food, wine, value for money and service. Thank you for squeezing us in at the last minute, and gifting us with a cathedral view window seat! One of our trip highlights.

Two sittings a night 7am and 9am with menu at about 30 euro. Great value for money and wine prices also reasonable. Intimate setting much like being in a persons home with exposed wood beams and varied cutlery. First dishes were excellent especially the pepper soup with poached egg. For main the haddock was perfectly cooked if a little overpowered by the tomatoes. Desert was lime cheesecake freshly made. A great romantic night out.

A delightful Saturday lunch in a beautiful location. Excellent choice of entrees and plats along with vegetarian options. Highly recommended when in Chartres. In March 1996 I was on a European backpacking trip that went sideways. I didn't intend on visiting France or Paris but did and as an architecture student visited Chartres for the cathedral's gothic significance and then walked around the town finding a beautiful restaurant overhanging the L'Eure. On that sunny March day I reflected that this was the place I wanted to propose to my future, albeit unmet wife. Fast forward 29 years, a marriage and 4 children later, my wife and I made it back where I proposed again and had an absolutely outstanding meal and experience on beautiful sunny March day. C'est bon!

Very gracious hosts. One of the best meals I have had. I was part of a study abroad group from the States. We had with us one girl who can get by with French, but the rest of us knew only “please” and “thank you”. The hosts and servers were very kind and they graciously (and patiently) served us some of the best food I have ever eaten. The atmosphere was wonderful. We all had a great time. Merci Le Moulin De Ponceau. Merci.

The restaurant is situated in a lovely location next to the river, making for a lovely sunny evening experience. The food is quite high-end, but unfortunately some of the dishes seemed to lack the flavour of the included ingredients. Staff were friendly, and the price is good for the experience, but I think they need to bump up the flavours a bit more.

Jeez. So lively yet complicated. I got lost . Google map needs an up to date concerning where to park the car and continue by feet 🤔. I kept turning around and around instead of just being told, "pack the car and walk, it's not so far" 😜, don't even know if that is possible 😁. Over to you Google. Give us a solution. Thank you.

(Translated by Google) Chartres has many paid parking lots, even very far from the center! So either you opt for one of them, or you go around in circles and find a free place but you will have to walk. That's what we did, it's quite nice because we then reach the center (it's a tough climb) by following the canals then walking through the alleys.

Terrible experience, food not good! We chose this restaurant last Friday evening after walking around the fabulous city of Chartres. It looked to be in quite a nice area of the town amongst some other restaurants and offered the type of dishes we were looking for. We sat inside near the bar, where there was a rather unpleasant smell which drifted in the air from time to time. This seemed to coincide whenever somebody used a door near to where we were sitting. The initial service staff seemed quite friendly and polite. We ordered steak and chips and a crispy fish burger with chips. When it arrived, the steak was very small and seemed to be folded in half. The meat was very tough and after taking the first mouthful it tasted like it had been cooked in rancid butter with a very upleasant taste indeed. The chips looked and tasted burnt. One mothful was enough not to want any more. My partner's fish burger appeared to be microwaved. The bun had a hard texture and the batter on the fish looked very pale and uncooked and was stuck to the bun. She took two mouthfuls and had to spit out the second one as it tasted rank. Her chips were also burnt. After trying the food, we decided that we would just finish our drinks, which were ok, and go. We were both left with a horrible taste in our mouths. The waiter, different one to the one that showed us to our table, came and asked us if we were happy with our meals, to which we replied no with an explaination why. He then went and came back with a bill for 50 euros. I asked him if we could just pay for our drinks as the food was not edible. He refused to do this and went off to chat to some other staff. When he came back he still insisted that the food was good and what we had ordered and we had to pay. He also seemed to become more agressive in his attitude and body language towards us. I did argue that we we were very usatisfied with the meal and felt we should be let off some of the bill. After it started to get more heated, I decided to just give them the 50 euros and call it a day. Over the years we have visited many restaurants in France, some very good ones and some not so good ones. This one is by far the worst restaurant we have visited in any country both in terms of food quality and quality of service! We do not recommend you go there until they have made some big improvements!
Chris T — Google review
The Foie gras was superb! The main dishes are all good. I had the pulled pork burger - yum! We tried two desserts, the lemon meringues tart and the chocolate cake. Both very delicious! If in Chartres this restaurant is worth a visit!
J ( — Google review
Smells like death outside under the « halles », thanks for the garbage cans and the dead rats around them next to the tables. That should have been a dead giveaway for the rest of the experience. The staff is clearly still in school and have acne spots depicting their extensive experience. No knowledge of how to properly place dishes on the table, pay attention to the clients… loooooong waits. The food is good, I’ll admit but way overpriced. All in all, they are way over their head and cannot keep up, looks a bit like a tourist trap.
Pascal L — Google review
Food was ok in general but the onion soup was burned and did not taste at all. Even though I complained nobody really cared. Service was not good in general. We ordered water and salt and never received it.
Stefan G — Google review
A really great meal here, starters, mains and pudding all delicious. Menu has lots of unusual and attractive sounding dishes, but not fussy. Chef is very good. Wine list, particularly Loire selection, nice too and the poire eau de vie we had was pretty special. Friendly and efficient service, cosy unpretentious setting.
Emmanuelle — Google review
Excellent lunch menu at reasonable price and very good quality. We had the sweet potato parmantier with pulled pork for the main course and an original viennoiserie pain purdue. The service was fast and efficient with the staff being very friendly.
Fiona C — Google review
Friendly staff were always on hand, made us feel welcome and were patient with our amateurish French. Nice beer and cider. My partner had a tasty steak with potatoes but not enough salad, I had john dory (perfect) served with a stodgy risotto which was delicious but had the texture of rice pudding. My plate also lacked green veg or salad other than a few leaves on top.

Lovely setting with terrace on Eure river bank on a beautiful day with blues skies over Chartres cathedral. Very reasonably priced menu with good quality and choice. Staff were efficient and friendly. Disappointed that amuse-bouche with aperitif were not a little more exciting in choice (saucisson) and flavour (vegetable puree). Starters were great, original and tasty. Main course salmon was not cooked enough which was easy to rectify but it was a pity that it did not come back on a clean plate with fresh vegetables. Overall a very pleasant meal.

La Brochet du Sud is a charming restaurant located in Chartres, known for its unique vertical skewers presentation. Situated near the south gate of Chartres Cathedral, it's an ideal spot to dine after exploring the city. The restaurant offers a lunch menu tailored for locals and visitors alike. With its retro decor, this small establishment stands out with its carefully crafted menu and reasonable prices.
Excellent value-small menu plus dish of the day. We went for this-suspended brochettes of beautiful steak with potatoes and a mushroom sauce. Followed by their gorgeous homemade chocolate mousse and pears. This place is right by the cathedral and you’d be forgiven for expecting it to a tourist trap. Sure they have an English menu but the waitress barely spoke English and there were French eating there. It was a wet afternoon and not very busy hence little atmosphere. I would recommend this without hesitation.
Julie R — Google review
We had a fantastic meal here - delicious lamb shank and a duck/beef skewer. All cooked to perfection. Good price. Wonderful view of the cathedral and nice ambiance.
Kate S — Google review
Had a lovely evening here prior to watching the illuminations. The welcome and service in general could not have been better. I started with a terrine with grapes from the daily suggestions and my husband had gammas with fennel and chorizo both of which were excellent. For mains we both had the suggested brochette which was steak with mustard sauce and dauphinois potatoes. All in all an excellent experience which we will repeat if we ever return to this beautiful town
Mandy T — Google review
Very good value, and really good food! We had the suspension skewer, and they were excellent. The meat & cheese board to start was also very delicious (and pretty!), and the crème brûlée was perfect. Great portion sizes and views of the cathedral as well. Beautiful, highly recommend!
Kristen K — Google review
We actually wanted to visit that place because of the Andouillette. While my brother and I went into the cathedral, my mother sat outside the empty restaurant to wait for us. She was told off by a rude waitress that this was impossible (according to Google they were open). When my mother wanted to make a reservation for later, she was told this would not be possible since they were not yet open. Quite strange way to get costumers...
Bastian B — Google review
My wife and I are here last Saturday night. The staff were very welcoming and pleasant, to two people with poor levels of french. We chose the brocette boeuf & canard skewers for our main course - highly recommend, nicely presented and very tasty. Also there's a captivating view of he cathedral. We highly recommend this place!
Irish R — Google review
Amusing restaurant whose highlight are hanging skillets with meat or fish. Beef had a hard texture, not good at all, duck was good and tender. All the rest of the meal was just ok but not something to remember. The place is small and a reservation is a must. This place is fine one time but not worth coming back as the menu does not have much choices. It faces the cathedral but there are other, very close restaurants that might be a tempting alternative. A caveat : parking in Chartres is a nightmare, very hard to find one and very expensive.
Bruno D — Google review
Simply Fantastic. I had the salad de le mer for starters and the salmon was perfectly cooked, and had the beef skewer with fries, beautifully cooked beef and the best fries I've eaten in France. To top it all off, it I right next to the north transept of the Cathedrap, giving an amazing view.
