Madaba in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Madaba, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Madaba is best known for its remarkably preserved Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, especially the 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land in St. George’s Church. The city’s archaeological parks and churches let you see mosaic floors in their original settings, offering a compact look at early Christian and regional history. Nearby Mount Nebo, a major biblical site with panoramic views over the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea, makes Madaba a convenient base for exploring the area. Its location just south of Amman also makes it an easy addition to most Jordan itineraries.
With favorites like St George's Greek Orthodox Church, Al Hakaya Museum, and مطعم دارنا, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Hekayet Nebo and مطعم دارنا so you can get the best taste of Madaba while you’re here. St George's Greek Orthodox Church is a 19th-century church that holds a significant treasure of early Christianity. It was built over the remains of a 6th-century Byzantine church and houses a remarkable mosaic floor depicting the oldest map of Palestine in existence. The mosaic, discovered in 1884, provides historical insights into the region and covers an area of about 94 square meters. The church offers visitors an opportunity to explore this ancient artifact and learn about its historical significance.
Home to the world-famous Madaba Map, St. George’s Church is a living mosaic of faith and history. Built in the late 19th century over the ruins of a Byzantine church, it houses the oldest known map of the Holy Land—crafted from millions of tiny colored stones. Known locally as كنيسة القديس جورج, this active Greek Orthodox sanctuary draws pilgrims and historians alike, standing as a bridge between ancient cartography and living worship. Its humble exterior hides a treasure that continues to shape how we see the sacred geography of the past.

Majestic Hilltop Church with Hidden Caves & Tower Viewpoint Discover a stunning church perched above the town, known not only for its grand architecture but also for the mysterious caves lying beneath its foundation. Climb the ancient tower for panoramic views across the entire town and surrounding landscape, a truly breathtaking experience that combines history, faith, and natural wonder. Better to visit when winter is about to begin.

A Sacred Gem of History and Faith Visiting the St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Madaba was a deeply moving experience. The moment I stepped inside, I felt a sense of peace and divine presence that words can hardly describe. The church is home to the famous 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land, a breathtaking piece of sacred art that beautifully connects history, faith, and geography. The priests and caretakers were warm and welcoming, happy to share the story of the church and its significance in Christianity. The atmosphere is serene — the scent of incense, the gentle flicker of candles, and the ancient walls seem to whisper prayers from centuries past. Whether you come as a pilgrim, a seeker of history, or simply a traveler drawn by curiosity, St. George’s Church offers a rare opportunity to feel the union of heaven and earth. It reminds us that faith transcends time and that sacred spaces still hold living energy. A must-visit for anyone exploring Jordan — not just for its history, but for the peace it brings to the heart.

The beautiful Madaba Map, a floor mosaic in the Church of St. George in Madaba, Jordan, depicts a map of the Middle East dating from the Byzantine period. The mosaic is the oldest cartographic representation of the Holy Land, including Jerusalem. It dates back to the 6th century and is truly impressive.

The Church of the Map in Madaba, located in blessed Jordan. The Church of the Map is a Greek Orthodox church, famous for its mosaic map of the Holy Land—covering Palestine, Jordan, and Sinai—and dating back to the year 560 AD. The map is composed of over two million mosaic pieces and provides a vivid depiction of the natural landscape, as well as the topographical layout of cities and villages—up to 150 locations. It includes incredibly detailed elements, even down to streets and roads within cities. This mosaic map is considered one of the oldest discovered mosaic floors and the oldest original map of the Holy Land. The map stretches south to the Nile Delta, north to Sarafand in Lebanon, west to the Mediterranean Sea, and east to the city of Karak. Among the sites featured on the map are: 1. Jerusalem 2. Bethlehem 3. Hebron 4. Jericho 5. Karak 6. Mount Sinai 7. The Jordan River 8. The Nile River 9. The Mediterranean Sea 10. The Dead Sea

You need to buy a ticket to ender now worth 3 jod, cash, from the shop on the ruight side. The shop is disorganised, no queue, just a bunch of people near the register talking through one another. The mosaic inside is impressive.

A lovely Church with the oldest mosaic map in the world. Unfortunately the church was under renovation when we went so most of the artworks were not in place. The main one we got to see was the Map on the floor.

When visiting Madaba, a must-see stop is the Apostles Church كنيسة الرسل, renowned for its remarkable mosaic floors. As part of a walking tour, visitors can explore this ancient church and learn about the early Christian communities that once thrived in the area. The city also offers access to significant religious sites such as Mount Nebo and the Madaba Museum.
One of the must-visit places while in Madaba. This is a restored church with lots of mosaic that is being rebuilt. You can buy tickets at the entrance. Exploring the place would take no more than 15 minutes. If you are exploring Madaba through the pre-defined path, this is the last station in the tour after which you head back to the Madaba Visitor Center.

One of the stops on the Mosaics tour in Madaba features a massive mosaic floor that has been restored and protected. The design elements and inscriptions are amazing. If you are interested in mosaics, this is definitely a place you should not miss.

Nice historical place to visit, lovely mosaic work of early Christianity days especially the Byzantine period. On the other side, not much going on, not that many tourists, services poor and much of it under renovation.

Madaba is a mosaic city. Can see lots of mosaics all over the city, especially i. The church. Apostles church is an archaeological site and you can see well preserved mosaics. Good place to visit
Kwang K — Google review
The Church of the Apostles is an ancient historical church and one of the significant landmarks in the history of Christian architecture. One of its most remarkable features is the large mosaic floor, considered one of the finest examples of Byzantine mosaic art. This floor is composed of thousands of small, colorful pieces forming religious and symbolic scenes, often depicting the apostles, intricate geometric patterns, and inscriptions in Greek or Latin. The mosaics were not merely decorative; they served as a visual means of teaching the faith and conveying Gospel stories to the congregation, especially at a time when illiteracy was widespread.
Abdullah W — Google review
This is an interesting site with very beautiful mosaics on the floor and their structural arches make a very beautiful shape. Definitely worth a lot because it is included in the Jordan pass.
David L — Google review
Hidden near the edge of Madaba, this 6th-century Byzantine church stands out for its mosaic of Thalassa, the sea goddess, framed by apostles and marine life. Built on a small hill, it combines spiritual symbolism with artistic detail, offering quiet insight into early Christian art in Jordan.
Marina S — Google review
Beautiful little Church filled with ground mosaics and murals. Very neat and the guard was supper nice to let us in even after he finished his working hours because we were 10 min late to closing. He went inside with us and explained everything…the building itself is brilliantly designed by the well known Jordan architect “ Ammar Khamash”…worth the visit for sure.

Madaba Visitors Center

Visitor center
The Madaba Visitors Center, established in 2011, is conveniently located in the heart of the city and within walking distance of other attractions. It showcases a collection of photographs and images dating back to 1902-1911, featuring mosaics from St. Stephen's church in Umm Al Rasas, Mukawir, and other mosaic art from Madaba and its surroundings. The center offers detailed maps and organized sightseeing information for visitors.
Wow, what an excellent visitor center. Free parking, welcome, short description on what and how to see sites within the small ~1km area of the tourist part of town. Obviously a lot of $ was spent creating a very nice area for tourists. There is a gratis map and 1,2,3...instructions for visiting. Even (!) a brown line on the sidewalk to follow. Well done. WCs are clean and big. There is a picnic bench area (under shade). And all the 'mosaic' sites are within easy walk. Perhaps ~2hrs to see all of it. The cute streets are full of cute shops, cafes, restaurants, usual tourist things. They really want tourists here and have done a great job. The town around the tourist area is usual busted up, falling-apart look. Streets very tricky to navigate (thanks, google!), traffic chaotic, folks stopping or parking anywhere they please. But the tourist area, the sites are very well done.

Madaba – The Ancient Byzantine Mosaic City Madaba is an ancient Byzantine-era city, beautifully repolished in a way that mirrors many European towns, with tiled roads, cozy cafés, boutique shops, and charming restaurants—always bustling with foreign visitors. The city is world-renowned for its mosaic craftsmanship, an intricate art form that uses tiny granite pieces to create stunning depictions of history, religion, and culture. Madaba is steeped in mystery and heritage, filled with ancient churches, hidden caves, stone towers, underground tunnels, and countless stories waiting to be discovered. There are three main ticket counters where visitors can purchase passes to access eight historical sites across the city. The best time to visit is between September and April, when the weather is mild and pleasant. However, summer welcomes travelers who enjoy the intense sun and heat. While a small Christian community still lives here, most residents are Arab Muslims, exceptionally friendly and welcoming to all guests. Overall: Madaba is a must-visit destination in Jordan, rich in culture, history, and hospitality.

The receptionist welcomed me warmly, gave me a map, and explained to me in details how I could see all the spots and enjoy Madaba. Thank you, for your time and effort. And I definitely recommend to everyone to start here when intending to explore Madaba. Don’t forget to cover up and protect yourself from sunlight and use sunscreen as you will be doing a lot of walking under direct sunlight

Madaba is known as the mosaic city and you might get mosaic-fatigue at the end of your day here if you don't pace down. Most of the interesting sites are located within a small walkable area and it's a good idea to just stroll around looking at the many shops selling mosaics, souvenirs and other things. There are also a lot of small eateries, cafes and restaurants. For us, the best sights were the Archeological Park, John the Baptist Church and St George's Church.

This is a hidden gem that depicts the history that passed through Jordan since the time of Moses, to Jesus, and finally modern Jordan. The place is well designed and well equipped. They have some very well developed sculptures. There is also a guide that explains every sculpture. Expect to spend around 30 minutes. Getting in incurs a small fee, and can be paid by cash or card. They have ample parking outside. There is a large store, and cafeteria. The place is 1 KM away from Mount Nebo.

Mount Nebo, also known as Jebel Neba, is a significant pilgrimage site for Christians due to its association with Moses, who is believed to have seen the Promised Land from this peak. Situated about 30 km from Amman and 10 km from Madaba, it offers stunning views of the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and the hills of Jerusalem. The area is often included in organized tours along with Madaba and the Dead Sea due to its convenient location.
Visiting Mount Nebo was an unforgettable experience. This historical and spiritual site offers stunning panoramic views over the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and even Jerusalem on a clear day. You truly feel the significance of the place where it’s believed Prophet Moses stood and viewed the Promised Land before he passed away. The site is well-preserved and peaceful, with beautiful mosaics inside the memorial church and friendly staff who are happy to explain the history. There’s a small museum as well, and the surrounding gardens are very calming. It’s best to go in the early morning or late afternoon for better weather and lighting. Don’t forget your camera — the scenery is breathtaking! Highly recommended for anyone interested in history, religion, or just a peaceful place to reflect. 🇯🇴✨

Mount Nebo (where Prophet Musa AS viewed the Holy Land) to Al-Maghtas — is considered blessed land in the Qur’an: “Glory be to Him Who took His servant by night from Al-Masjid Al-Haram to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed.” — (Surah Al-Isra 17:1) • Scholars say “blessed surroundings” refers to the land of Jordan, Palestine, and Syria — the area of many prophets.

Beautiful mosaics and sculpture of the bronze serpent cross.. Peaceful church on the hilltop, great for photos One of Jordan’s most spiritual stops!

This place is magical. According to ancient pilgrims, the biblical Moses was supposed to have seen the Promised Land from Mount Nebo, which he was not destined to enter with the Israelite tribes. Today, the peak houses the Sanctuary of Moses, with an archaeological park cared for by the Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land. Excavations have shown that the first Christian sanctuary was built in the 4th century. The church contained a diaconate and a baptistery. Thanks to inscriptions discovered on mosaics, we know, among other things, the names of the artisans. John Paul II visited Mount Nebo during his 91st apostolic journey. The Pope planted an olive tree next to the remains of a Byzantine basilica.

The restaurant Hekayet Nebo, located near mount Nebo, offers amazing food with a delightful combination of flavors. The refreshing lemon mint perfectly complements the delicious hummus and appetizing salads served before the meal. The chicken in their shawarma plate is exceptional and considered one of the best around. Not only does this restaurant provide great food, but it also offers stunning views and a pleasant ambiance to enhance your dining experience.
Fantastic place. Great view of the valley (hint of the sea), welcoming hosts, great food comfortable tables. Prices are a bit high but the place is worth it. Seems to be no signs as we only learned of it from museum below "why don't you have coffee upstairs?". (Google maps has the icon buried in museum, only when you zoom in will it appear). The humous was very well done, creamy smooth, oil and nuts. The taboule was quite good, not too lemony; more tomatoes, finer grind is my preference.

Local-style restaurant with a decent buffet and relaxed service Place Came for lunch and had a pleasant experience. The restaurant is large and located next to the museum. Despite being near a tourist attraction, it felt local and authentic. Food The buffet was generous in size and offered a good range of dishes. Nothing extraordinary, but also nothing to complain about. Staff Service was basic but efficient. It gave the impression of being family-run, which added a nice touch. Overall A good lunch spot with a local feel and a satisfying buffet, especially convenient if visiting the nearby museum.

Darna is a charming restaurant located in the heart of downtown Madaba, offering a variety of Jordanian Manageesh that are freshly baked and delicious. The seating upstairs provides a great view of the church, and the staff is known for being very friendly and welcoming. Customers have praised their fantastic shawarma and quick service. While they only have an Arabic menu, the staff is super friendly and helpful. Some visitors suggest adding traditional touches to enhance the ambiance even more.
I liked it a lot. First time in it. It has variety of Jordanian Manageesh... fresh from the oven. There is seating upstairs with great view on the church. They have tea but in paper cups. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. And very generous...I think if they add small traditional touches in the seating above, like at the window wall, and table covers it would be one of the best places in Madaba! Also less USA talk, it is kind of a turn off, but more about Jordan would add a real value.

To start with they gave us the english menu in which the prices are double compared to the arabic menu, so we insisted to get the arabic one and translated it with google. We ordered a large chicken fukharat and a small vegtable one. The food came quickly but instead of the vegtable one they brought us a small pizza.. probably deliberately. The food was bang avarage but at least quick and cheapish

Darna Take away Disappointed with lamb pizza. Good view of St George Greek orthodox basilica. Had Lamb pizza, price is reasonable. Seating area upstairs, rather run down, but good view of St George Greek orthodox basilica. The lamb chunks lacks marination, the pizza dough is ok, but not recommended. Maybe try other dishes next time. Would I return? No.

Tasty food and friendly owner. We were visiting St. George's right across the street. I snuck away from our tour group to get a taste of local food. The owner immediately spotted that I wasn't the usual patron and greeted me with a smile. After learning that I was looking to sample some local flavors but needed to run to catch up to my group he got his staff to put my order together quickly. We love supporting local businesses that appreciate adventurous tourists. Not sure about the pricing as I was in a rush and probably overpaid a little for two shwarmas and a lamb and cheese (pizza?), maybe, maybe not, but the helpful owner certainly made it worth it. If you're in Madaba visiting the mosaic, stop in and place a take away order, this way you atleast have something tasty as reward for an underwhelming tour.

I wish I could give more than 5 stars because this place was just amazing. The food, the service and the setting, all were top notch. The salad was simple but mouthwatering. When it came to mains, I wanted the lamb cutlets but sadly they were out of them, instead I had the lamb cubes, and I was blown away. Without a doubt the best lamb I have ever had. The flat bread and the chips were equally delicious. Bisho, my waiter, was the icing on the cake. So sweet. I would highly recommend this place. I wish I had more time in Madaba so I could eat here again.

Amazing place to come and have some local dishes. We had a buffet here and it was amazing. Everything on the menu was tasty and well done. The service and staff are very friendly and helpful. There is no parking available here as it's located on a narrow street.

We came for a quick coffee but ended up having full lunch. The food was amazing, shish tawook was mouth watering and Baba ganoush first class as well. Service very friendly as well. Highly recommend!

Amazing tasty food from salads to frappe even links fried and glazed with pomegranate molasses. Salad dressing was tasty and grilled 🍆 eggplant's were properly prepped.breaf was fresh and warm, reserves in plastic bags and cut in halves. I didn't care much for the ambience is it for like sitting in at someone's balcony, not that much decoration but the group with me insisted on being there since we didn't have reservations tomorrow but the food was perfect and the service was friendly and hospitable. The place serves and sells JR wine. As well as some local beer brands that might be worth trying. Turkish coffee was well prepped, aromatic, served warm with perfect with perfect foam for

Haret Jdudna is a great restaurant in Madaba with delicious Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. They have highchairs, a full bar, free wi-fi, and private dining. The setting is great as well with an old castle-like house. There is also live music some nights!
5 stars — Wonderful experience! Warm, welcoming staff, fresh, flavorful mezze, and perfectly cooked mains. Cosy atmosphere and great value — a must-visit.

The food was good and the Atmosphere is great. However, we were the first people to arrive to the restaurant and we saw the manager arguing with a lady staff. He obviously treats the staff (calling them while pointing fingers in a very aggressive and rude manner.. Unfortunately it was an unpleasant experience.

The atmosphere at Haret Jdoudna is undeniably beautiful, with its vintage charm and relaxing setting — easily the highlight of the experience. However, everything beyond the ambiance was disappointing. The food quality fell short of expectations, with very small portions that were heavily overpriced. Even more frustrating was the poor service: staff were slow to respond, inattentive, and lacked the basic level of hospitality one would expect from a restaurant of this reputation. Sadly, Haret Jdoudna would not be my first or second choice when visiting Madaba. If you are only looking for a nice place to sit and enjoy the surroundings — and are willing to tolerate slow service and expensive, underwhelming food — it might still be worth a brief visit. Otherwise, I would recommend exploring other options.

I do not get some of the reviews! You can’t rate atmosphere as 3 and post most amazing pics! I have been coming to this restaurant for as long as I can remember, and I never had but the best food. To be fair we always have mezza and grilled meat, so am not sure about other dishes; the meant is always perfectly cooked. Fair to say portions are not huge, but good enough! Salads fresh and tasty and of course best atmosphere ever with the trees and flowers hanging over our heads and all around and the traditional furnishings. Very good service too. Never disappoints!

We were lucky to spot this place while visiting nearby Church of St. John. As Madba city is all about pristine heritage walks, this place is no exception. Organic beauty and open spaces under the shade of tree canopies is calming and refreshing. Food is great accompaniment, we loved every bit. As we were is rush, staff was helpful to serve fast but everything was were cooked and fresh. I would love to repeat is next visit and every time.

The place is very nice and very cozy and the staff were very helpful. The food test was great yet the portion was very less for the BBQ so the price is a little bit higher compared with the portions

Good food and great atmosphere here! Great variety of options too! Pricey, but a really nice place for a special celebration or date night.

I come back here after 25 years of absence. The atmosphere is the same .. very nice. The crowd is different .. lots of tourists now. And the local vibe is missing . The food .. I remember it being amazing .. now the food is average with less portions than what I’ve had else where . The service was great for some tables .. I could see their orders turning around fast .. to our disappointment .. our service was very bad .. something went wrong with our table and orders.. and at some point we had to service our own table .. including taking away empty dishes and serving our selves another round of Araq!! Overall .. it was nostalgic but did not leave a lasting final impression .. I can recommend the venue on weekdays as the vibes are still special . Not my choice But can still recommend it for the style
