How to sum up such an amazing trip?? Since my childhood, Egypt has held a fascination for me. This tour hit many highlights, pyramids, Karnak, Abu Simbel. 5000 years of history. The tour is comprehensive, Medhat, our guide on the Luxor to Aswan leg, was phenomenal. He has a love of his job and the sites we visited and it comes through in the way he explained things. Everything was very well organised, the logistics perfectly worked out. My review will be broken into sections: Sites: Luxor To Aswan This tour covers many of the main sites of ancient Egypt. The shining jewels are the temples of Luxor and Abu Simbel (optional tour). These are awe inspiring in their size and beauty. It's almost surreal to be able to touch items 3000 years old! Medhat was very knowledgeable and gave time to explain the highlights and then free time to explore and take photos. The tombs within the valley of the kings were just stunning, the colours, the stories painted in the walls, carved into the stone. Please note that the entry price to the valley includes 3 tombs but you have to pay extra for Tutankhamun's tomb. It is about £11 per person. It is the only tomb that contains a mummy. Young king tutankhamun 's fragile mummy is there to visit. The temples from the later Egyptian history such as Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae are also on this tour and again just stunning. Queen Hatshepsut 's mortuary temple is also a lovely site. Cairo Pyramids and Sphinx and the Cairo museum It's almost impossible to understand the scale of the Pyramids until you are in front of them. 5000 years old and standing majestically on the plateau. You can pay extra to go into the Pyramid but not for those with dodgy knees, back or claustrophobia. Logistics Medhat and the team ensured that all logistics were perfectly organised. Mini buses, coaches etc were all comfortable and clean though basic. The cruise ship Opera was a lovely large cruise ship with very comfortable cabins, and various places to relax and watch the river go by. Our cabin was cleaned every day. The food was plentiful, varied and a buffet for dinner lunch and breakfast. Drinks have to be paid for, though tea juice and coffee were included for breakfast. Lovely experience. WiFi was not free on the ship, and had to be paid for. Flights from Cairo to Luxor was with Egypt Air and Aswan to Cairo was with Air Cairo. The flight is only 1 hour long. Perfectly fine flights. All in all a very smooth operation. The hotel at Cairo was a really lovely modern hotel with outdoor pool, bar and restaurant. WiFi was free. Breakfast was a lavish buffet affair. Very comfortable rooms and beds. Optional tours Hot air balloon - this was a phenomenal trip though a very early start at 3am. Totally worth it though. To watch sunrise in a hot air balloon over the the West Bank of the Nile with the Valley of the Kings below, is a once in a lifetime experience. The light and sound show at Karnak temple is beautifully done and tells the history of the complex, the gods and Pharaoh's who are immortalised. Highly recommended. The Nubian village tour- something totally different. A long sail on a small boat to a vibrant and warm village and market to see traditional Nubian homes and culture. Plus you can opt to hold a live crocodile if you dare!! Abu Simbel - the undisputed jewel of the options. This staggering site is a must see and so worth the 3am start to get there! Ramses temple and the temple for Nefatari are really worth getting up for. Cairo Camel ride. My 19 year old daughter loved this! A camel ride to see a panorama of the pyramids. For myself, it was an experience and looking back i can laugh at myself but at the time was a little scary! Tour Guide Luxor to Aswan Medhat was a really really lovely tour guide. He was kind, knowledgeable, and humourous. He made the trip really smooth, was always available. He really added so much value to the trip. I enjoyed his company and the care he took of us. Cairo Nasser is an Egyptologist and his detailed knowledge of the pyramids and artifacts at the museum shone through.
