We recently stayed at TownePlace Suites Anaheim Maingate Near Angel Stadium and had a very mixed experience.
The Good:
The location is excellent — 10 minutes to Disneyland, walkable to Angel Stadium, Saddleback Church, and surrounded by fast food options.
Front desk staff were exceptional — Josh, Paul, and Sabina were empathetic, kind, and tried their best to help, even though they were limited in what they could do.
The Wi-Fi was strong and reliable, which was appreciated, especially when we needed to plan alternate activities from our room.
The Not-So-Good:
The hotel is currently undergoing renovations, which isn’t clearly advertised.
We were promised a renovated room the day before check-in but were placed in an old, dated room with a musty, moist smell. The air felt moldy. We were told to speak to the manager (David), but he was unreachable our entire stay.
Halfway through our visit, we were finally moved to a renovated room. But this interrupted our plans as we had to come back midday to pack and move so they could clean the room for another guest.
The renovated room looked nicer and more modern, but still had defects — misaligned hooks, peeling door trim, and a broken toilet paper holder. Only some furniture was replaced; the old bed frame, dressers, and TV stand remained.
We also found a large staple sticking out of the carpet next to the nightstand, which I painfully discovered with my foot. It was so big it couldn’t be pulled out by hand — a serious safety hazard (photo attached).
The swimming pool floor had dark stains across most of it. It looked concerning enough that we chose not to use the pool due to water quality worries.
The breakfast area was small, crowded, and always short on hot food. No waffle machine, and overall food quality was below average.
This hotel has potential once renovations are complete and management improves, but our stay felt like a bait-and-switch, and the workmanship was sloppy even in the "new" rooms. Definitely not what you'd expect from this Marriott brand.
