Waterford

Waterford, a seaport in southeast Ireland, is the country’s oldest city. It was founded by Vikings in 914 A.D. and parts of its ancient walled core remain. Within Reginald’s Tower, a circa-1003 fortification, the Waterford Museum of Treasures displays local archaeological finds. Famed glass manufacturer Waterford Crystal began here in 1783. Today the company’s facility near the historic district offers factory tours.

Visiting the Glass Factory was absolutely worth it. Watching the skill of the glass blowers and cutters up close was fascinating. It’s not only a unique experience but also great value for money. Definitely a place I’d recommend visiting if you’re in Waterford!
My family and I came here in September 2025. We were a group of 7. We enjoyed ourselves. I loved the displays of beautiful crystal. I have a lot of Waterford Crystal and love looking at their new items. My husband bought a round of bubbly that was served in Lismore crystal. That was delightful! Four of us took the tour together. My husband and I visited about 20 years ago and took the tour then also. That's when I fell in love with Waterford Crystal. We loved the history and watching the people work at the different stations. This factory is where they make the specialty items, such as awards for different sporting events, the ball for new year's eve on Time Square, and many other interesting things. I highly recommend visiting here and taking the tour.
A must-do experience thanks to Bernie! Our visit to the House of Waterford was one of the absolute highlights of our trip, and it was largely thanks to our phenomenal tour guide, Bernie. Her passion and deep knowledge of the craft were evident from the start. What set this tour apart from any other we've taken was the incredible access. Bernie didn't just rush us through; she actively encouraged us to ask questions, and we had many! She answered every single one with patience and fascinating detail. The best part was the chance to see the "inside stuff." We got to go behind the scenes and speak directly with the master designers and artisans as they worked. It wasn't just watching from a distance; it was a real conversation. Seeing the intricate process up close and hearing about the inspiration from the creators themselves was an unforgettable experience. If you're in Waterford, you absolutely cannot miss this. Be sure to ask for Bernie's tour if you can. Schedule first thing in the day. It's a 5-star experience all the way!
Fascinating 45 minute guided tour learning about the history & how this world famous factory make their stunning crystal glass products. The craftsmanship & attention to detail is so admirable. Many of their products are readily available for purchase from their shop. Highly recommended & good value given the craft activities you get to see from closeup.
Lovely guided factory tour giving the history of Waterford Crystal and the whole behind the scenes operations. Great information! And beautiful crystal showroom.
Dragged my husband on this tour and he actually loved it! Great to learn about the history and to see the craftsmen and women at work. Beautiful!
Jamie the tour guide was very knowledgeable and nice! He really had a great vibe and very professional! Joe the bartender is a great guy! The drinks were great at the end of our tour and we ended up staying for a second drink and chat.
Amazing experience seeing these skilled artisans and craftsmen at work. The showroom is set up beautifully to feature and showcase their exquisite creations!

This museum has a fantastic mix of see, do and read. Too much reading in a museum is why people dislike them so much. This place had a wonderful array of artifacts. Staff were friendly and helpful. You really feel like you are stepping back in time as you enter. Get the Freedom pass as it is the best value.
Wonderful museum with so many treasures! From Henry the VIII’s hat to gold stitched cloaks, it’s a great museum on Waterford. If you can do a guided tour, you definitely should. Splurge for wine in the ancient wine vault.
What a marvellous place.. the people are really friendly, the collection one of a kind, with some real top notch stories. The atmosphere is wonderful and the guides know their history. In other words, a real gem to visit.. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to be there..
A truly fascinating experience! The exhibits at the Waterford Treasures: Medieval Museum are expertly curated, featuring expertly conserved artifacts that offer a stunning glimpse into the city's rich past. The staff were exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable, adding to the wonderful atmosphere. We purchased the Freedom Pass, which was absolutely worth it. It gives you access to five of the Waterford Treasures museums, making it a fantastic deal. If you're visiting Waterford, this museum is an absolute must-see!
Visited as part of the freedom pass (20euro) very nicely laid out, from the medieval wine cellar to the films on each floor giving more details about the exhibits. Enjoyed the story of the clergy clothes on the middle floor especially. The detail and craftsmanship of them is incredible!
I'd say that if you happen to be visiting Waterford this place is a must see. So rich in Irish history and lore. Give yourself about 2 hours to really take in everything, but you could rush through it in an hour. One thing I wish they'd add is a section on Irish mythology like Cú Chulainn, I feel like a lot of this has been lost to time.
Really enjoyed this museum. Great tour guide too. Lots of very historic information and displayes. Would definitely recommend a visit here.
Nicely displayed museum. There's 2 floors plus underground floor. You can see Waterfords history from Viking age all the way to the present.

We flew to Ireland to join a bus tour of Ireland. Started in Dublin, then toured the island and finished in Dublin. It was a great tour. One of the stops was Waterford where we first toured the glass factory and then had lots of time to walk around the waterfront area. Lots of history here. Reginald’s Tower is a very picturesque 1300th century tower down by the Waterfront. Busy with tourists taking pictures.
We were not sure whether to pay to go in, but we are glad we did, and found that children under about 12 are free. A really helpful and welcoming member of staff when we entered, then after climbing all the way to the top watched a really informative video about the history of the tower and Viking Triangle and Waterford. Plus good views of the waterfront through the small windows! Lots of information boards on the remaining 2 floors - plus I enjoyed the Lego models on the ground floor! There's also a canon ball from 1650 lodged in the outside of the wall. So lots of see - our kids enjoyed it. I guess we had about 30-45 mins there.
Been visiting and then living here in Waterford for years but never visited this tower. This particular day had free admission so we popped in. I would gladly pay the small admission fee though, it was so interesting. It is the root to Waterford's history and how the city began. Highly recommend joining the guided tour (approx 50mins) rather then self guided, you can ask questions and gain many more interesting fact. Unfortunately I've forgotten the young ladies name who guided us but she worked at the Book of Kells last year (I learnt more interesting facts about this too), she was charming, friendly and passionate, thank you. Any tourist coming to Waterford, do not miss this.
Small but interesting tower with exhibits and a video showing the initial history and settlement of Waterford, as well as the building of the tower. £5 each which was reasonable. Just take care on the step & mind your head!
This is a simple but excellent attraction- affordable, interesting, and great place to start in Waterford! It gives a breakdown of the history, local landmarks, and an overview of the whole city. The spiral stairs in particular is excellent!
Very small but cool museum. It explains the history of the Vikings, Normans, and the English as they founded Waterford and fight over it through the ages.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Incredible place where history feels alive 🏰✨ Reginald’s Tower was one of the highlights of my time in Waterford. Knowing this was the exact spot where the Vikings founded Ireland’s first city made it feel so special. The name Waterford comes from the old Norse word Veðrafjǫrðr(meaning something like windy fjord) 🌊⚔️.Standing there, I truly felt like I was in the middle of that history. The tower is small but powerful. It’s the oldest civic building in Ireland 🇮🇪 and has been everything from a Viking stronghold to a Norman fort, a mint, a prison, and more. You can still see the original stonework, and touching those ancient walls gave me a strange but amazing feeling — like I was connected to the people who stood there centuries ago 🪨🕰️. Deffo, I will go back to take more pictures 😆 My phone died.
Really interesting piece of history. If you are the city, it’s worth a look

Epic tours were amazing. Lots of good history was shared in the medieval triangle. Worth the time and Great value
This 18th century townhouse was opened to the public in 2011 and you can see a lot of treasures of the Georgian and Victorian Waterford. The ground and first floors are full of 18th century glass, silver, furniture and paintings. The top floor then continues this walk through history up to 1970. Really interesting museum to learn a lot of about the city's history.
Did a self guided tour here on the freedom pass (20euro) was a beautiful building, with lots of interesting exhibits & artefacts. Top floor contains the history of the town, while the middle floor contains objects from history and are displayed in each room.
Firstly we would like to thank Mrs Rickert our lovely tour guide who gave a wonderful Bridgeton Experience, this is a must do experience when visiting the city, there is so much to see and here about we easily spent a couple of hours there.
Oh it's a lovely interior, interesting historical objects too, I'd recommend
I had a lot of fun on this tour today! My father and I went to the Bishop’s Palace on July 24, 2024 and were told that they had just started doing a Bridgerton inspired tour. After a mix up where we accidentally followed the walking tour guide instead (which was also fun) we went back for the tour of the palace and had a blast. The tour was basically giving us the latest and juiciest hot gos from 100+ years ago and it was great! Our lovely guide told us about some of the characters who’d lived in the building, other notable people in the area, and showed us around the absolutely beautiful first two floors. All in all it was a very fun tour. Get into the mindset that this is just your best girlfriend giving you the 411 on what’s happening and it’s good craic. Despite the theme being Bridgerton the tour is absolutely still appropriate for children. The guide slyly mentioned at one point that one man’s children couldn’t have all been his, but that was probably as raunchy as it got and I don’t think the child in the group picked up on it at all. All in all a very worth while tour and my father and I enjoyed ourselves very much even without him knowing a thing about Bridgerton.
We visited the Museum with our Community Care Group from Conna, from the very start Erin couldn't have been more helpful in helping to organize this as a few changes had to be made along the way, the Museum is wonderful and Ann, the housekeeper, beings it all to life, she's a great woman for the gossip!!!! On the same day half our group visited the Museum of Time, this too is well worth a visit, some interesting and enormous clocks and timepieces, beautiful places thanks and well done to all.
The Bridgerton tour is one you shouldn’t miss. The way the tour was given was both informative and very amusing. We had many good laughs and enjoyed the history of the Palace and the secrets of the family. Absolutely recommend the guided tour!!!

Absolutely fantastic route...I loved it 💚 Plenty of coffee shops along the way... playgrounds for kids and I have seen water stations too. Beautiful scenery and views. I would definitely recommend it and will come back again. Thanks
Very scenic But Ireland's weather is as unpredictable as it could be... when I left it was all sunny and nice... walked 2 kms and started to rain.. thankfully stopped after 10-15 mins.
It's a lovely walk and beautiful scenery. I always enjoy it here.
Wonderful experience. The Waterford Greenway is a stunning 46 km off-road cycling and walking trail that follows an old railway line between Waterford and Dungarvan. It offers beautiful views of the Comeragh Mountains and Dungarvan Bay, and features eleven bridges, three impressive viaducts, and a 400m long tunnel12. Highlights from reviews: Scenic Beauty: picturesque landscapes and well-maintained paths. Family-Friendly: It’s a popular spot for family outings, with easy bike rentals available. Mixed Opinions: you can choose to start from Waterford, dungarvan or Kilmachthomas bike rentals depending on your preferences. I peronally started at Kilmachthomas and went 16km until the Bay and came back. The cafe here near the rental closed at 5 pm so eating from there was out of the question. But there ate restaurants and coffee stops on the way. Water refills are placed at points. Importantly. We got a flat tire on the way. Luckily we were near a main road and the rental truck came for the rescue.
It needs a places to stop and sit. It's very nice but you don't have a place to rest for a minute in a long walk. Forget about bins or toilet. You have parking every many km. Look for that in your map
The Dungarvan Greenway Cycling Causeway offers a fantastic cycling experience with its scenic views and well-maintained paths. Stretching along the picturesque countryside, it provides a safe and enjoyable ride for cyclists of all levels. The route is beautifully landscaped, with stunning views of the surrounding nature. It's a perfect way to explore the area, combining exercise with breathtaking scenery. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy a leisurely or challenging cycle in Dungarvan
Absolutely fantastic, one of the best and beautiful greenway in Ireland. Just word of advice, if you are thinking of renting bikes then please do not park at SETU campus, there is no bike rental at the campus anymore. Start the greenway from Kilmacthomas , you have bike rentals, restaurants here , however this cuts short the greenway by 24 km(one way) . If you start from Kilmacthomas to Dungarvan the greenway length would be 22km(one way) . But the views are amazing and the route is mostly flat except at few places. If you want to view the railway bridge from the side will need to take a small detour. There is a beautiful restaurant near Dungarvan, which gets crowded pretty fast, but then you have plenty of options available in Dungarvan town.
Just beautiful! Love the fresh air in the morning. We had a good run, will definitely do it again

Went in March when the magnolia was everywhere. It was magical. Planned to go again in May and didn't think it would be as good since the magnolia would be finished but it was even better. The wisteria made the day. Its such a unique place. I was a bit put out at first that you have to pay in but its well worth it.
Absolutely beautiful gardens with a huge selection of amazing plants and flowers, lawns and wooded areas. Views of the river also, plus a lovely restaurant to eat in after walking around.
After spending the night at Mt. Juliet, we were headed to Waterford. I had previously read good reviews about the gardens at Mt. Congreve, and convinced my group we should stop on our way because Congreve is only about 5 kilometers from Waterford. The decision was one of the best last minute changes we made to our itinerary during our two weeks in Ireland. The gardens and buildings on the estate were stunning. We wished we had more time to spend strolling the grounds. It is a must see stop if you have two hours or more when in or near Waterford.
A fantastic garden to stroll arround. Fabulous trees, gorgeous walks, lots of colour all year round. Magnolia season is spectacular but my visit in September did not disappoint. The Foxford shop is beautiful. The Stables Cafe has a delicious selection of food, eat in and takeaway. Some pictures from March included for a hint of magnolia season. Also, this an RHSI Partner garden, 50% entry. There is a small reduction if you book on line. The Plant Fair in Spring is well worth attending too.
I photographed a small wedding here earlier this year and it was incredible! My clients had a small ceremony in the library, which has a cosy, old-world charm about it, and then we got to explore the gardens. Fiona in particular was great, driving us around so we could see more in less time. She also knows the gardens really well and was able to recommend the best stops for photos. The new eco-cabins on site were also perfect for ease of access and charm. Overall, highly recommend for small weddings, I'd happily go back!!
Beautiful and well maintained space featuring plants from all around the world. Take the tour to learn about the history and horticulture from the extremely knowledgeable and passionate gardeners. It's worth it! Hope to come back to see the garden in other seasons soon.
Beautiful gardens, with a real sense of planning & thought. Especially loved the woodland walk!
I treated myself to annual membership and have been a regular visitor over the last year. It is truly a magical place to visit in all seasons. Particularly beautiful in spring when everything is coming into bloom. It's so much more than a simple 'garden' it's a forest, almost jungle-like in places. I do a lot of walking in here, usually spending about an hour or so looping around the various trails. And thankfully in the last few months, the cafe has been vastly improved! In the past I wasn't a big fan and used to avoid it pretty much. But since they've done the overhaul, we've eaten here 4 or 5 times and have had the most delicious meals. The scones are superb. The coffee is also very good. Big big change from what it was in the past, thanks to the new head chef JB Dubois (ex GrowHQ). Side note: the annual membership is amazing value at €100 for 12month access (2 x adults, 2 x kids), including a 10% discount in the shop and cafe.
