Puerto Natales

Puerto Natales is a port city on the Señoret Channel in Chile’s southern Patagonia. It’s the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park to the northwest, and the port for boats touring the Patagonian fjords. The Municipal Historical Museum in the city center exhibits artifacts from the region’s indigenous population. To the north is the vast Mylodon Cave, once inhabited by prehistoric, slothlike mylodons.

Spectacular view. Took us 8h including sandwich stop at the top for lunch + picture stops + toilet stop at Chileno. The first quarter was flat and a good warm up, followed by quite a continuous rocky ascending which leads you to the Chileno. There you can go to toilet for 2000 and refill the water for free. The water tastes amazing. The 3rd quarter is a beautiful gentle uphill in the forest before the last ascent which is quite demanding.
We visited the area twice during our stay, and each experience was quite different. The first time, we went for a full day of hiking and crossed several beautiful trails. The landscapes were stunning, with wide open views, peaceful nature, and a real sense of being in the heart of Patagonia. It was a long but rewarding day, and we really enjoyed exploring the paths and taking in the scenery. We returned a second time with the goal of seeing the glacier. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t on our side that day. It was cloudy, windy, and visibility was very poor, so we never got the chance to actually see the glacier. It was a bit disappointing, but that’s part of the experience in this region, nature and weather can change so quickly. Overall, it’s a magnificent place that offers amazing landscapes and great hiking opportunities. Just keep in mind that the weather can strongly affect what you’re able to see, especially if you plan to visit the glacier. On a clear day, it must be absolutely spectacular.
One of the best destinations of my life. The mountains range is so magnificent and beautiful nature. The variety of nature is charming. The perfect place to do hiking in different levels of difficulty. Only one thing that you have to consider is the strong and aggressive wind shear up the hills. My car had been hit by strong wind with the rocks.we have to drove back to town without the window glass.
Torres del Paine National Park is also translated as the Blue Tower National Park. The park is surrounded by azure glacial fjords and lakes, and located in southern Chile. The main attractions in the national park are: Las Torres, Los Cuernos, Valle Francés, Nordenskjöld Glacier Lake, and Lago Grey & Glacier Grey where icebergs can be seen. The park is close to the South Pacific Ocean and the polar high latitudes, so the weather changes dramatically. However, whether it is a rainy day or a sunny day, the scenery in the park has its own characteristics. I really like the beautiful scenery on a sunny day, and I also like the scenery on a rainy day that makes people imagine endlessly because I had an experience in different weather.
A beautiful nature wonderland showcasing the majesty of the Andes mountains and the surrounding glaciers and waterfalls in the Southern Chile region of Patagonia
This adventure is totally overpriced and you get very low quality food for a lot of money, but the nature part of the W-Trek was amazing and very beautiful. We hiked from Central to Grey and it was a wonderful experience. The hiking itself would be more fun and enjoyable if the trails would be better maintained. The park authority is not doing a good job to keep the trails in good condition. The accommodations and food packages are totally overpriced, it’s a RIP OFF. The quality of the food at Central and Frances was really bad. For dinner (USD55 pp per day) we received watered down soup on both days. It was awful. The main course was cold by the time we had it on the table. Cold rice and cold mashed potatoes isn’t very appealing. The lunch box that we received at Central which costs about USD30-35 was a dry bun with one slice of ham and one slice of cheese. No mayo, no mustard, no lettuce, no tomatoes. A bag of nuts that had an expiration date of Jan 2025 (we were there in April 2025), and an apple. The second day we ordered vegetarian, so they put some lettuce and a slice of tomato on the dry bun. Breakfast was very simple, watered down juice that really tasted more like water than juice, white bread, a mini portion of scrambled eggs, ham and cheese. For USD30! One would expect for the $$ that they charge, you would get some energy loaded really good quality food that you need when doing the W-Trek. Except for the check-in desks and the bar, staff at Central was not friendly, actually some were really rude. After dinner they kick you out of the dining area to make space for the next shift, which I understand if the place is fully booked but this was the end of the season, half of the dinning area was empty and we still couldn’t stay there. At Frances dinner and breakfast were slightly better but the lunch box was the same 'rubber sandwich'. Staff was at least very friendly. Paine Grande and Grey had the best food (buffet style) and also the friendliest staff though the tents are very small and at Grey the tents don’t have wooden platforms. Our tent was on a slope so we constantly kept sliding into the same corner. Again, overall it was a great experience that I don't want to miss but the bitter taste of being ripped of will remain. Do your research before you book any packages with any operator. The park doesn't make it easy to book everything yourself but you can save a lot of money if you invest the research time and more importantly you don't pay a lot of money for crap food.
Torres del Paine National Park, located in the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica region of southern Chile, is widely celebrated as one of the world’s most spectacular natural reserves. The park is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, marked by the iconic granite spires known as Las Torres, which rise sharply above the surrounding plains and are a magnet for trekkers and climbers. These distinctive peaks, along with the striking Cuernos del Paine-mountains with unique black and white banding-form the visual heart of the park. The geography of Torres del Paine is a study in contrasts. Snow-capped mountains tower over golden pampas, while turquoise lakes such as Pehoé and Grey reflect the jagged skyline. The park’s glacial features, especially the immense Grey Glacier, offer awe-inspiring views and opportunities for boat excursions or hikes along icy shores. Valleys like the French Valley and Ascencio Valley provide access to some of the most breathtaking vistas in Patagonia, each with its own unique geological formations and panoramic lookouts. Beyond its famous peaks and glaciers, the park is a haven for biodiversity. Visitors often encounter native wildlife including guanacos, foxes, pumas, and a variety of bird species such as the Andean condor. The lenga and ñirre forests add a lush green contrast to the otherwise rugged terrain, especially in the spring and summer months. Torres del Paine is accessible for all types of travelers. While seasoned hikers can embark on challenging multi-day treks like the W Trek or the full circuit, there are also shorter, well-marked trails and scenic viewpoints accessible by car, making the park enjoyable for families and those with limited mobility. The infrastructure within the park is well-developed, with options for guided tours, horseback riding, and all-inclusive lodges that offer comfort and convenience amid the wild surroundings. The weather in Torres del Paine is famously unpredictable, with strong winds and sudden changes in temperature, so visitors should come prepared for all conditions. Despite the sometimes harsh climate, the park’s beauty is undiminished, and each season brings its own charm-whether it’s the wildflowers of summer or the snow-dusted peaks of winter. Overall, Torres del Paine National Park stands out as a masterpiece of nature, offering visitors an unforgettable experience of Patagonia’s raw and untamed beauty. From its world-famous trekking routes to its serene lakes and abundant wildlife, the park promises adventure, tranquility, and some of the most stunning scenery on the planet.
Torres del Paine National Park was simply breathtaking. Loss of words to describe its beauty. Located in the Chilean Patagonia with its beautiful and majestic mountains, glaciers , turquoise lakes and diverse wildlife this national park makes it a nature lovers paradise. Pictures do not do justice for this stunning landscape.

Large national park with trails leading to caves that once housed prehistoric animals.

Interesting cave with good interpretation. Their website has the wrong price. It was about $12 USD which seemed expensive for a site that takes about 30 minutes to see. There are some other trails and caves we could have seen but the weather was not good that day.
This cave is famous by the fact that prehistoric Mylodons leaved here. The footprints show that pumas and foxes visit this cave at night. This is not a very long but very wide cave.
Interesting spot to visit, particularly if you have a guide who can provide the history and significance of the site.
I was so happy to visit here! I love giant sloths and it was very cool to see where they once roamed. There isn’t much to see inside the cave, but it is a nice visit. We also walked a trail above the cave and another trail to a different cave. We were able to Uber there and back although my service was not very good on the road. We bought our tickets online and then showed them at the entrance. There is Starlink wifi available at the welcome building. This is a great informational stop!
An interesting spot about 30 minutes from Puerto Natales. There are three main caves: the first is the largest and most impressive, while the others are smaller with little to see. If you enjoy trekking, the full trail takes around 3 hours. Worth a visit, though I wouldn’t call it a must.
This place is so impressive to see. Make sure you go from the smallest cave to the biggest. Great time to spend after a day in the towers
Simply beautiful, it’s on the way to another national park. Quick 30-40 min stop with clean bathrooms. We almost missed that you can hike inside the cave:), so don’t miss it’s a bit to the right of the monument. Beautiful pictures from inside cave.
Lovely little excursion near Puerto Natales. We called an uber to take us there, and asked our hotel to have a cab pick us up 2 hours later. That gave us enough time to see the big cave and take a 30 minute hike to the medium sized cave, walking at a fast pace.

We took a catamaran tour to the Grey Glacier, it was a great experience, amazing views! You have to walk at least 30 minutes from the Hotel Grey Glacier to get to the boat(and back). But the tour is definitely worth it;) Plus, Calafate Pisco Sour cocktail is included in your ticket so it helps to stay warm while on board😁
100% must do. Dress warm because of the wind. If the water is high you will have to take the water taxi to the glacier boat. The hotel has wifi that you have to pay for by the hour. Lunch opens at noon. If you arrive early there are some easy paths by the water to walk and kill some time.
Beautiful glaciers. When taking a boat tour from Hotel Lago Grey you can get quite close to them. It costs around 100 Euros and takes 2.45 hours.
I did the Glacier Grey Navigation tour to see this amazing glacier. It's a bit pricey at around $120 for a two-hour tour, but the views are absolutely stunning. Stellar!!
Really nice but expensive to go. I hired a car from puerto Natelas to the Hotel as bus tickets were expensive. 100k $ for ferry tickets which I really recommend to get. Try to get your tickets at least 4-5 days in advance.
Must visit place inside the park and the most beautiful glacier as compared to ballacaedas and Serrano. Glacier can be seen from three different places and the view from each of those is amazing. The tour was conducted professionally and had good experience. The hike from cafeteria to the boat though flat, takes time to walk because of gravel.
Beautiful glacier! We finished our W trek here, and it was awesome. There are some viewpoints along the trail, close from grey campsite.
The boat leaves from Grey Lake Lodge. It's a long walk across the morain to board. The 3-4 hour trip up Gray Lake to the glacier costs $100. Stunning vistas. Nature at its finest. Great place to take in...

This is an abandoned and very run down dock leading into the lake. It's a famous symbol of Puerto Natales and huge draw for photographers and Instagramers. You're sure to find at least a few people here on week days and many more on the weekend. It's iconic in that it leads right to the mountains and sometimes even into golden clouds during sunset. It's free to visit and just along the road.
It was rainy and windy when I went. Old dock that’s broken but cool to look at if walking along the shoreline
very pretty view!! the muelle itself is nothing spectacular but the history is very interesting and the view of the water and the mountains is phenomenal. it’s a popular tourist spot so can get pretty crowded but is still a nice place to sit out and look at.
Nice photo location, great background.
Unique burnt out bridge in a beautiful backdrop. Can get crowded with people taking photographs. Recommend going for sunrise or sunset as the light would be perfect … I wish I had time to go during sunrise as it would illuminate faces as this structure is West.
The muelle as such is nothing special, however, along with the incredible view of the sea and the mountains, it creates an impressive setting for amazing photos.
It's a nice spot to take pictures and if you are lucky, you might be able to witness majestic sunsets, with hundreds of Cormorans and the mountains at the back
A quiet town, special for a relaxing walk after having equipped yourself with everything you need for the excursion.

Great place in Puerto Natales to relax and take a nice walk.
I had a spare hour before sunset and great weather, so I was strolling along the little town on Puerto Natales and happened to come across this monument. There is skate/bike park here for doing tricks. The sunset is great from here. The views of mountains are great too
pretty cool monument but the statue itself is not spectacular in my opinion but i can see how a lot of people could enjoy it. it’s also fun to sit and watch the people skating and biking at the skate park but if you’re expecting a serene view of a statue overlooking the beach, it may be a bit loud for your taste
Nice spot for a walk around the lake. We were staying nearby and passed this statue a few times walking past. Nice views
Nice sculpture in a nice park area. Mostly good place to walk around the shoreline, Good photo location.
It really feels like the end of the world
The two sculptures, one male and one female, seem to play and float in the strong Patagonian winds, which are prevalent in the area and which the sculptures themselves celebrate and are dedicated to. They have been create in 2012 by the Chilean sculptor Marcela Romagnoli and have since become one of the symbols of Puerto Natales. They sit next to a small skate park and right by the water, in a wonderful spot from which to admire the gulf of Last Hope (as the gulf on which Puerto Natales sits is named) and the surrounding mountainous landscape. It's a lovely sculpture in a wonderful place, well worth a stop.
Nice place to gaze at the sea and feel the wind - it really is windy

Lovely little museum of the local history. The prehistoric history is well documented; the fate of the indigenous folk is portrayed with a lot of detail as well. It includes “newer” history too about the colonizers and their impact in the region. Staff was very friendly and high value for money.
Well documentation of the early settlers, their dreams, their feights, their daily lives. It is preserved there. And in the new part of the museum a well curated description of the racism and greed of some settlers as well, which led to the acceptance of genocide on the native tribes. Luckily the museum gives a place and education on the topic such that mankind stands a chance that this won't happen again as it did so many times. The ones who don't know their history are condemned to repeat it. Thank you for holding up memory and information.
I had a wonderful afternoon here learning about the area and I recommend to someone wanting to know more about the people who lived here first, very well curated
A professional display with very interesting information and displays about the history and early native settlers in the region. Information in this first section is bilingual in Spanish and English. The later rooms are about the colonialists who settled in the southern region. The displays show the life, farming and sadly, the inhuman treatment and extermination of the indigenous tribes. The hour visit was well worth the time and the CPS2000 entry for a foreigner (CPS1000 for nationals)
This museum is a great place for a visit to have a better understanding of the history surrounding Puerto Natales.
Wonderful, charming museum with detailed information in English and Spanish about the area around Puerto Natales - prehistory, early inhabitants, European settlements, etc. Carlos was very welcoming and helpful, pointing out specific details that interested us based on our background. Definitely worth a visit. Highly recommend!
An informative, inexpensive local museum providing a solid history on both Patagonian civilisation and the town of Puerto Natales. Worth a visit if passing through the town.
Excellent museum showing you the history of Puerto Natales as well as Patagonia origins. And everything for just 1000 pesos!
