Definitely worth a visit. Tour was very informative and our guide was very friendly. Interesting to see how folks operated the mines back in the day. The gift shop had a nice selection of items for sale. The food was pretty decent too and reasonable value. Not far from Carrick-on-Shannon. If you wanted to make a day of it I'd recommend doing the The Shed Distillery afterwards and then maybe the boardwalk or a cruise in the Shannon 😎
Gerry was the guide during our visit, & what a guide he was. As a miner in this pit until it closed, he was informative & could tell afew funny stories along the way. He explained about how the equipment worked & how the men would have to position themselves to work safely. He & my dad, who also worked in the pits as a teenager, were able to compare notes, albeit different types of pit. This is probably the most engaging mining experience I've visited. There is an area of photos & old equioment/tools as well as a short video to help explain the mining jobs of the men and a nice clean cafe. I would highly recommend a visit here, worth the money. Added bonus, spectacular views of Lough Allen & the valley, especially when the sun is shining.
If you've got a weekend in Leitrim/Roscommon, this is worth the visit. Our guide was an ex-miner. His accent was tough for me (from Dublin) so I'd be interested to know if foreign tourists think similarly. The mine itself was pretty interesting, a bit chilly so a fleece/jumper would be recommended, and there's a small space for extra reading & a video. The cafe is ok with a small gift shop. There's plenty of parking & there's gorgeous views of Lough Allen. The driving route to Arigna is on some tiny, narrow country roads.
Really great experience, history of the mines was so interesting, our guide Eamon was lovely to chat to and hear his tales of the mines, its great the guides are ex mine workers to hear first hand stories. The cafe was so relaxed and lovely food, the staff were so welcoming and friendly, highly recommend a trip to the mines.
Absolutely fantastic experience, massive thanks to Eamon who was employed as a miner in Arigna mines until it closed, for the fantastic tour. Thanks to all the staff who were very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend this experience.
Arigna Mining Experience - An amazing tour into the history of Irish coal mining! A tour with former miners reveals 400 years of history at Arigna mines. In 1958, local coal powered the ESB power station, which closed in 1990. The miners had a grueling job: working on their knees in narrow 45cm faces, in dust and darkness. Awesome experience. I definitely recommend visiting!
Maurice an ex-miner did a private tour with us. He provided great explanations but also stories of the time he was digging coal. Great visit.
My wife and I toured the Arigna mine in May 2025. There was just the two of us and of course our guide. I think his name was Ian, but can't remember for sure <sorry>. It was fascinating to hear the stories of the brave people working in the mines. It was hard and dirty work to say the least. Besides the potential inherent danger, we were told the vein of coal they would try to extract was only 22 inches thick. Well worth the time to see how some people had to earn a living. There is a small gift shop and cafe if you're hungry for something quick. There is also a nice view of the surrounding area in the lunch area if you stay for something to eat.

An interesting ruin next to a nice town park. Dog friendly, we strolled the park first and then walked around the castle. A great afternoon!
We visited Roscommon Castle on our way back from Westport. It's a great place to take a break from the road and stretch your legs. It's free to enter and the views from the castle towers are stunning.
What a glorious sight. The history wrapped in this castle is uncomprehensible. Being able to walk, touch, climb the walls was an honour. It felt so calming to stand within the castle grounds. The park surrounding the castle was excellent with play equipment and walking tracks. Just beautiful.
Its a Norman Castle built in the 13th Century. Well maintained by the OPW. Nice view over the park from the top. Its free admission.
A great historical place around Roscommon to go soak a bit of history, it is family friendly, has a lovely park for kids and a fitness playground. Gets very windy in the fall though so wear an extra layer. Also free tp visit.
Roscommon Castle is a striking medieval ruin built around 1269. It sits beside a pleasant town park in Roscommon and gives you free access no admission fee, no strict schedule. The grounds are well-kept: walking paths, a pond, children’s play area nearby and plenty of picnic space. The ruin itself is evocative: high curtain walls, D-shaped towers, echoes of battles and architectural innovation from centuries past. What you should know: parts of the castle are not accessible (for safety), and if you want guided tours that may only be available at certain times. It’s great for a contemplative or family outing, less so if you expect full interactive exhibits. Overall: highly recommended for history lovers or a laid-back stop on a drive.
Beautiful ruins of a once beautiful community I am sure. So peaceful to walk around and imagine people going about their daily duties.
Such a fabulous place to visit. The park is kept in such excellent condition. The castle itself is very well maintained and I'm delighted to see that it's an active protected home for swifts in aid of their conservation. I love that it's accessible for mobility aids and that it's open to view without having to go to a visitor centre or book a tour.

Lovely little pub! Myself, my sister and mam went on a little weekend to Roscommon and loved it here. We spent our time in the snugs! Old school set up but lovely! Really enjoyed and will be back! Great pint of plain!!
Great pub in the Market Square Roscommon. We come every year to Roscommon to play golf and always enjoy our time in Harlows. Great welcome, service and a great pint of Guinness. John Burke
I went to Ireland back in June of this year and a very kind older gentleman who helped me showed me this place and 5 stars isn’t high enough. This place was amazing. The prices were great, the service was top notch, and it was just an overall really friendly atmosphere. If you’re ever in Roscommon, stop by and grab a pint
Please note that many of the reviews are based on the previous owners and the vibe created. Still physically a beautiful bar to visit .
Love this pub! Great atmosphere. Super friendly as you would expect in all of Ireland! Highly recommend!
Great local pub. Lovely pint of Guinness.
Amazing history, great beers, and service and atmosphere.
What I would call a proper Irish pub. It doesn't try to be gimmicky but simply does what it needs. Lots of places try to invoke the atmosphere of an irish pub but this sort of place sets the standard.

Welcome. A beautiful, big and old Catholic Church in the middle of Roscommon. Easy to find as it is the tallest building around. The doors were open on our visit and the atmosphere said “welcome”in every gorgeous view. My wife lit a candle said a prayer for a loved one. I really enjoyed reading the memorial plaques around the walls. I think my favorite thing was peace and inviting solitude of a truly welcoming place.
This is such a beautiful place, I was filled with love as I walked through. I wanted to stay for mass, but was held by time.
"He created the church to meet your five deepest needs: a purpose to live for, people to live with, principles to live by, a profession to live out, and power to live on. There is no other place on earth where you can find all five of these benefits in one place." ~ Rick Warren
A great example of the Catholic revival the mosaic work and art in this church are superb. Well worth a visit even if you are not religious
Beautiful. If you're in Rosscommon, take a few minutes to visit.
At this place one acutely feels the Holy Spirit! Lovely architecture and surrounding landscaping. Sorry about the dark photo but this was taken in February, which means that in Éire nightfall happens around, like, 3pm.
It's stunning Church and there were a good spirit within the community

Great place, lovely staff. All sorts of shows playing at the venue. Nice modern foyer and bar, great amenities backstage.
Lovely little theatre. Very comfortable. I was there for a kids ballet show, and although it was a sellout it didn't feel crowded. Plenty of parking available.
This theatrical arts and events center provided a captivating backdrop for the Greener Spaces Competition awards ceremony. The ambiance was elegant, with state-of-the-art lighting enhancing the stage. The staff were attentive, ensuring smooth event logistics. The acoustics were excellent, amplifying every speech and acceptance. A memorable venue for a special occasion.
Fascinating pieces in the current exhibition. And a very nice man on the door.
First visit to see Al Porter and upon entering all the staff were so friendly and nice. The building itself is immaculate and a credit to all the staff there. Definitely will be back again.
Saturday Night Feb 1st at Roscommon Arts Center was one of the most enjoyable shows ever! Such a brilliant crowd..we didn’t want to leave the stage! Big shout out to Anthony Quinn the house technician for looking after the band so well and making it all run smoothly. Thank you from all at The Swing Cats.. Hope to see you again soon.
A lovely place for a nights entertainment. About 200 seats so you're close enough to the action no matter where you're seated. Plenty of parking and near the town for restaurants and pubs etc. A real gem.
Lovely venue. Nicely done up and really friendly and helpful staff. Very welcoming space

(Translated by Google) It says it's a museum but it's also the tourist information center. There is a map of the city but also of others in the area. The woman who served us is very nice and explained to us that, although there is a star of David, it is not a Jewish building, only that the person who built the building was called David.
