Connemara National Park

National park
Connemara National Park covers around 7,000 acres of diverse landscapes including mountains, bogs, heaths, and grasslands. The park offers scenic walking trails and the chance to spot wildlife. Nearby attractions include Leenane, a picturesque village nestled between mountains and the shore of Killary Harbour fjord. Inland from there lies Connemara National Park and Kylemore Abbey with its Victorian walled gardens.
The car parking is pretty spacious, if the designated parking is full, then the cars can be safely parked along the road side. It's free car parking. At the base of the hiking, there are clean toilets, tea rooms, a good eatery where refreshments, coffee, tea, ice cream are sold, the staffs are wonderful. We chose the longer hiking loop, which was about 4 kms, but had to abandon the last leg of it due to unsafe climatic conditions. E The hiking experience was pretty good. Better to have hiking gear including hiking shoes and support if possible. Overall, a great experience. Would love to visit again.
Pavan R — Google review
The Connemara trek was absolutely beautiful. At the base, there's a café where you can grab a snack, and toilets are available as well. The trail starts off flat and gradually becomes steeper as you approach the Upper Diamond, but overall it's not a difficult trek. The views are stunning, with the Atlantic Ocean in the distance and a refreshing cold breeze throughout. There are clear signboards and well-maintained steps along the way. Everything is well organized—perfect for a scenic and enjoyable hike. Everyone loves the hike...
S G — Google review
The red loop that brings you to the top of the mountain had a lot(mainly 90%) of stone stair but easily doable for most people that hike a least 2-3 time a year. It is a beautiful hike of around 6.5km. Lot of wind of top of it, bring good equipment if you can't handle cold. It says to not do it on bad weather, but if you're an avid hiker, it won't be a problem, simply be careful not to lose for on the stone, it could get slippery. Clean site, beautiful place.
Philippe M — Google review
Beautiful national park! They have a visitor center offering information, parking, toilets, and areas for eating—all for free. The different hiking paths are well marked, with options for all levels, from easy to hard.
Brenda M — Google review
A great National Park with a good visitor centre with a large free car park on the outskirts of Letterfrack. Varied scenery from coast to mountains, a marked "mountain" trail up Diamond Hill from the visitor centre. Many historic sites, famine villages, holy wells, prehistoric forts, and such like, within the park. Visitor centre has cafe and toilets. Can be very busy in season.
Geoff B — Google review
Absolutely gorgeous! Don't miss the upper Diamond Hill Trail loop if you're able. We were all alone except for a few sheep. The views are incredible and just get better and better as you go.
Kate K — Google review
Definitely do the Diamond hill walk in Letterfrack. I'd say medium grade walk but you can see most of it from the village so you can make up you own mind. Great local pubs immediately at the bottom to eat and drink.
John K — Google review
Incredible views, breathtaking. Ireland really has some beautiful spot. I can’t wait to be back. The views here are better than Cliff of Moher(cough cough).

Galway Cathedral

Mentioned on

Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Galway Cathedral is a modern and airy Catholic cathedral with a green-domed, renaissance-style architecture. The building features a mosaic of JF Kennedy and offers uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape, including Mercy Convent. It is located near the National University of Ireland, Galway and University Hospital Galway. Visitors can spend the day exploring Galway City by visiting the free Galway City Museum, going shopping, or taking a food tour.
During my time studying abroad in Galway, I would pass by and stop in daily. I’d come in, light a candle, and say a quiet prayer. I’ve visited on weekdays and weekends. I’ve come for masses and novenas. I’ve prayed each time I walked through these doors. I visited the gift shop and found gifts to send back home, wooden rosary, cathedral slate magnet, postcards, and the like. You can find medals and prayer cards for different saints, bibles, journals, books for children, and gifts for sacramental milestones. This is a beautiful stone church with large stained glass windows, a very beautiful place. It was previously the site of a jail, so I’m glad I’m here on my own accord in its modern, Cathedral form rather than the former building. My photos show the Cathedral during various times of day, in all different lighting, some are very dark, others are further away overlooking from the river. You are seeing it in my photos through my eyes as I’ve seen in at all points of the day. This was the place I came when I needed to feel safe.
Mary N — Google review
A wonderful cathedral to visit, right in the heart of Galway, there is a colourful beautiful dome in the ceiling with many windows to let in the light with a purple glow. Many splendid columns support the wonderful arched wooden ceilings. The organ pipes are in a wonderful display surrounding a beautiful stained glass window. There are many beautiful stained glass windows to see. Many rows of great wooden pews that run the length of the cathedral and seem to go on forever. Entrance is by donation.
Don L — Google review
Majestic , Serene & Beautiful! Wonderful place of worship and reverence! The organ, stained glass , alter, etc is just plain amazing. Wonderful history behind all of this as well. A definitely must see in Galway! Pictures don’t do it justice. You have to be here in person to experience and view its grandeur!
Rex N — Google review
The most beautiful cathedral I’ve ever visited Galway Cathedral truly took my breath away. The architecture, the atmosphere, the light streaming through the stained glass — everything felt majestic and peaceful at the same time. Out of all the cathedrals I’ve seen, this one left the strongest impression on me. A must-visit when in Galway!
Luba M — Google review
Very modern, but at the same time with a nod to the past with the building materials used. Very beautiful, peaceful and serene inside. A good place to stop, think, pray and contemplate.
Edward T — Google review
Must visit. Don't miss it. We just had a couple of hours to spend in Galway and it was cloudy and rainy. On a grey, cloudy and rainy Sunday in Galway, the cathedral feels just right. Its solid stone exterior blends into the muted sky, sitting proudly by the river. Inside, it’s a different world—stained-glass windows glow softly, even without much light, and the faint smell of incense mixes with the quiet hum of Sunday service. It’s calm, peaceful, and a perfect escape from the damp day outside. A great spot to pause and reflect.
Bala V — Google review
I expected to see a regular Catholic Church when we entered the Galway Cathedral. Its exterior was gothic. Its interior was inspiring. As I walked from one corner of the cathedral to another, awe overtook me. Wall-mounted, flush statues depicting the Stations of the Cross caused my heart and spirit to pray. I’ve never been so overwhelmed by the grandeur and beauty of a church to cause that reaction. This cathedral stands almost equal to the majesty of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. It’s a must-see when you travel to Galway.
Gail D — Google review
Stunning Cathedral in Galway. There must be 80 beautiful stained glass windows inside. The walls are a spectacular dark and light gray sandstone.

Galway City Museum

History Museums
The Galway City Museum is a must-visit cultural stop offering insights into the history of Galway city and county. From Prehistory to the 21st century, the museum showcases documents, photographs, medieval artifacts, and memorabilia chronicling urban life. Notable exhibits include the Reliquary of St. Ursula by Richard Joyce, traditional Galway Hooker boat, ancient Claddagh Ring, and Irish-language books by Padraic O Conaire.
The Galway City Museum was one of the most rewarding experiences of our time in Galway. It offered a clear and engaging look into the city’s history, helping me understand how everything we were seeing around town fit together. It gave context to the culture, architecture, and even the street names, turning the rest of our trip into a much richer experience. The exhibits are well curated and easy to follow. They cover everything from medieval Galway to its maritime heritage and modern development. What I really appreciated was how the museum focused on the stories of the people who shaped the city. It felt personal and authentic rather than just a collection of facts. The museum is welcoming to all ages and types of travelers. The layout is simple to navigate and visually interesting, with a few interactive touches that make it even more enjoyable. Its location near the Spanish Arch and River Corrib makes it convenient to visit during a day of exploring. If you're visiting Galway, make time for this museum. It gives you a deeper connection to the city and its people, and it made everything else we saw feel that much more meaningful.
Joshua F — Google review
MOST VIBRANT CULTURAL SPACE IN GALWAY: We visited the museum in Sept 2025 and were deeply impressed by the vibrant cultural space. The museum is located right next to Spanish Arch, overlooking the fast moving Corrib river as well as the Galway Bay and the mighty Atlantic Ocean. We understand that the museum came into being in 2007. The museum blends effortlessly in the historic surroundings, signifying a combination of heritage and traditions with modernity. The museum displays art, history and architecture of Galway. We were impressed with the traditional fishing practices of Galway. The museum also highlights the importance of story telling with the rooftop offering a breathtaking view of the town on the western coast of Ireland. In short, it provides a cultural immersion into the culture and history of the Irish Republic.
Dr V — Google review
What a cool design for a museum. There is so much history about Galway, from the poets to its fishing history, and all the people who once walked the streets shoeless. I love the historical model facing how the town across the bay now looks. Oh! And the Legos throughout the museum.. Nice touch.
Valérie — Google review
Free entry, no need to book in advance! Very interesting experience, you learn a lot about the history of Galway.
Angelica H — Google review
Very cool experience through the history of the city of Galway. Walk through time and experience well preserved artifacts and interactive exhibits. Learn about the bog and how the people of Ireland used it to their advantage from building to luring enemies to their doom. As you wander the top floors explore their current super human exhibit and see the progression of modern medicine and dive into an under the ocean experience exhibit.
Christina F — Google review
This free museum is very descriptive and informative about the history of Galway. Also, for families with kids it can be educational as there are lots of interactive parts.
Shima S — Google review
Entry is free😍 Museum is worth visiting here and is really good if you want to know about the history of Galway. Worth all the time spent here

Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden

Mentioned on

Abbey
Nature & Parks
Nestled in the Connemara National Park, Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden is a picturesque Gothic Benedictine nunnery with restored Victorian rooms and free garden tours. Originally constructed as a castle in 1868, it became the residence of Benedictine nuns in 1920 after their abbey in Ypres, Belgium was destroyed during World War I. The nuns have since restored the buildings and developed the surrounding areas into a stunning tourist attraction.
This is truly a wonderful place to visit. The staff are lovely and very helpful. It is a beautiful, calm and has a relaxed feel. The way the Abbey is set out with information, is very easy to negotiate and read, and although it contains a lot of information, it is wonderfully executed to keep you engaged in every room. The gardens are exceptional, the food was fabulous and the Connemara ponies were clearly very happy! Overall it was a terrific experience.
Sarah B — Google review
Our day trip to Kylemore Abbey and Gardens has been one of the highlights of our UK tour. The weather was perfect and the drive from Galway to Kylemore on the N59 was a treat. Lough Inagh on the way was one of the prettiest and spectacular views we have seen anywhere. The Abbey and Lake setting is superb. The whole story behind the building of the Abbey until present is interesting, sad and inspiring. The Gardens are a highlight. It is a really well run visitor experience.
Rob M — Google review
Absolutely stunning Abby as well as fantastic example of an extremely large fully walled English garden. We appreciate that there was a shuttle bus taking people from the ticket area all the way to the English gardens. Walking here was absolutely stunning. We had a fantastic lunch inside their cafeteria style food service area. The prices for the food were very reasonable and everything we had was excellent. The historical tour inside the Abbey was also noteworthy.
Mary B — Google review
Small self guided tour through a very well put together downstairs museum. The upstairs display area is very disconnected and feels super random. The grounds are gorgeous. Absolutely beautiful setting right on the lake. Parking is very easy, there is a wonderful cafe at the bottom and another near the gardens. Highly recommend visiting this castle, and the drive out is STUNNING!
B B — Google review
This is a gorgeous place and so much history. The walled gardens are pretty much done for the year, being October, but imagine they are spectacular in summer. It's still worth the visit, even late in the season.
Kat S — Google review
We visited Kylemore Abbey on a rainy day — and although the skies were grey, the atmosphere was magical, and we ended up spending a full 2-3 hours exploring the estate. The moment you arrive you sense you’re in somewhere timeless: a grand castle-turned-abbey set amidst the wild Connemara landscape. What stood out for us: the Victorian Walled Garden (about 6 acres), originally created in the late 1800s by Mitchell Henry in loving tribute to his wife, and painstakingly restored from the 1990s onward. You stroll through the formal flower beds, herb & vegetable plots, old glass-houses, and fruit trees — all within high brick and granite walls. We also took the shuttle bus from the visitor centre to the gardens (this runs regularly) and found it very convenient. The estate features peaceful woodland & lakeside walks, a café where you can pause for tea and scones, and a craft shop showcasing local treasures. Inside the abbey itself, you learn about the castle’s origins, the story of the Henry family, the later arrival of the Benedictine nuns in 1920, and how the estate evolved through time. Highlights include the charming neo-Gothic church (built in memory of Margaret Henry) and the family mausoleum — small but deeply atmospheric. Even in the rain, the reflections of the castle in the lake, the misty hills behind it, and the rich gardens made the visit unforgettable. I’d heartily recommend bundling up and giving yourself enough time to wander gently, perhaps linger in the tea house and enjoy the quiet. A beautiful blend of nature, history and calm that stays with you long after you leave.
Yasmin G — Google review
One of the most stunning places we visited on our 1000+ mile Irish road trip. The story of this place is part of what makes it special so I'd encourage enought time for that. But the grounds are enormous. They have walking paths, gardens, and so so much to explore. We spent 4 hours here. The gift shop is one of the better ones, it carries hand crafted items from the Nuns. The restaurant is cafeteria style, but honestly, some of the better food we had on our trip. The landscape on your way here is also breathtaking. We saw the Fjords on our way north. One of our must sees for sure.
Chelsea — Google review
Kylemoore Abbey & Victorian Walled Gardens were beautiful. Situated between majestic mountains you can see mini waterfalls that flow in to the nearby lake. The landscape is magical. The self guided tour takes you through the history and everyday life of the people that lived in the estate/abbey. You can walk around parts of the lake and take a quick bus to the beautiful walled gardens. The handmade chocolate from the Abbey is very tasty and a nice souvenir. Definitely worth a trip especially on the way to the Connemara National Park.

The Cliffs of Moher are a stunning natural attraction on the western coast of Ireland. These dramatic seaside cliffs stretch for 18 kilometers and offer an 18-km hiking path, O'Brien's Tower, and a visitor center. Nearby, Stonecutters Kitchen is a family-run restaurant with outside seating that provides views of the Wild Atlantic Way.
Beautiful cliffside landscape in Ireland. Worth the visit. Lots of tourists. So go early if you can! Parking is easy with help from the park staff. Public restrooms, souvenirs and food are available at this popular site.
Virginia H — Google review
The Cliffs of Moher are absolutely breathtaking. The views over the Atlantic are stunning, and the sheer scale of the cliffs is awe-inspiring. Even on a windy day, it’s an unforgettable experience and a must-see if you’re in Ireland.
Griffin P — Google review
Very beautiful view but the walking path is extremely tight so you constantly have to watch out for people behind and Infront of you, and if that wasn't enough there is an electric fence which you almost need to touch because the tight path. Also there are a lot of flies which ruin the view because they keep flying in people's faces. The unisex toilet stinks very bad, so I would recommend going to the bathrooms at the souvenir shop
Tarik E — Google review
Very nice attraction here, but honestly, kinda a tourist trap. If someone could park outside the car park, you could was right in and not being questioned. Views are amazing and park well maintained. Highly recommended if you love cliffs sightseeing!
Jean-Francois L — Google review
You cannot go to Ireland without seeing the Cliffs of Moher. They are beautiful and rugged. You can climb as much as you want or just a little and still see the Cliffs in all their splendor. There is also a really good museum built into the hill.
Tom V — Google review
Sadly a foggy day for us when we were there. Otherwise im sure the views would have been excellent. There are lots of small flies along where people would take pictures and its kind of annoying. There is a visitor centre where you can tour some exhibitions and there is a cafe and restaurant there too. There is also a well stocked gift shop.
SL W — Google review
Such a beautiful place to visit. Well designed location when it comes to the Welcome Centre being built into the hillside. Paths are easy to navigate and they have golf cart for people with mobility issues. The views are stunning and well worth the trip to get there. Nice big gift shop with plenty of things to buy and they also have a sit down restaurant. Recommended.
W Q — Google review
It’s one of the most impressive places in Ireland, where the beauty of nature takes your breath away. The massive cliffs stretching along the Atlantic Ocean create an incredible sense of grandeur. The wind, the sound of the sea, and the breathtaking views to the horizon make it feel like a fairytale. It’s a place where you just want to stop, watch, and enjoy the moment. Definitely worth visiting for anyone who wants to experience Ireland’s stunning nature! 🌊🇮🇪

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Dunguaire Castle is a beautifully restored 16th-century tower house located on the southeastern shore of Galway Bay near Kinvara. Once owned by the OHynes clan, it was restored in the 20th century and became a meeting place for literary figures like Yeats and Shaw. Now open to the public year-round, it offers local entertainment and banquets during summer.
Stopped here in a tour from Galway in April this year. Just a quick visit and we're able to walk around the perimeter. Very picturesque 16th century castle home. Worth a quick picture if your nearby. Also really neat to see how low the tides get nearby.
Eric S — Google review
We stopped on a Monday afternoon just to take a peek. Parking is across the street and down the road a little bit, but an easy walk overall. Parking is also free which is nice. The castle itself was not open when we were there, I'm not sure if it ever is anymore? But we could see theres a gift shop inside through the windows. We took some photographs and walked around it and went on our way. There were many others there as well. All in all expect to spend 30 minutes here.
Alex B — Google review
Stopped off on the way down the coast and wasn't dissapointed. There was a free carpark a short walk from the castle with plenty of parking available. The walk to the castle was actually good as it provided a few photo opportunities and survey the surrounding scenery. While it was closed it was still a very interesting walk around and well worth the visit.
Darren S — Google review
Pretty cool castle on the side of the road. Think high tide makes it look cooler. Inside is still closed but you can walk around outside and take pictures. No cost. Parking 50m past castle.
Jer S — Google review
Only 4 stars because we couldn't get into the inside as it was locked, apparently it's a seasonal attraction. We were able to walk around the outside, completely around the castle and that was ok. The view of the castle is great,v from the road, from town and from the entrance walkway. There is a car park across the road. There are no public toilets outside as far as I can see and I walked all around it. The view of the bay is gorgeous.
Elk H — Google review
Dunguaire Castle is one of the most iconic sights on Galway Bay. Built in the early 1500s by the Ó hEidhin (Hynes) clan, it later passed to the Martyn family — one of the “Tribes of Galway.” In the 20th century, it became a gathering place for Ireland’s Literary Revival, hosting the likes of Yeats, Lady Gregory, and George Bernard Shaw. The car park is a few minutes’ walk away on the opposite side of the road, so be ready for a short stroll. At the moment, the castle itself is closed (major repair works needed, so no tours or banquets), but it’s still worth stopping to walk around and take in the views. Great to see a Palestinian flag flying from the walls here — you’ll notice quite a few of them around Clare. It adds a contemporary layer to a place already steeped in history.
Aga D — Google review
Dunguaire Castle is absolutely charming and steeped in history. Perched right by the water, the views are stunning, especially around sunset. The castle itself is small compared to others in Ireland, but it’s beautifully preserved and gives you a real sense of what life might have been like in a 16th-century tower house.
Oshadha A — Google review

The spiritual centre of Galway. Market has selection of stalls but would like to see food choices upgraded to make it compete better with vast selection nearby. Would love to see a permanent theatre like many urban parks.

Nice and lively square in the heart of Galway. Perfect for a break… but beware of the local “mafia”: pigeons and seagulls are always ready to steal your food. Great spot – just guard your sandwich!
Sabrina C — Google review
Great place to rest or plan. The local Tourist Info advertises 4 daily walking tour (more than offered via apps!) and the mini tourist train. Bring your icecream and sit under shady trees (mind the gulls and pigeons!) kids can play on the set in the corner, see the Browne Doorway and view the flags for the clans of Galway
Jennifer S — Google review
A beautiful space in the heart of the city, good to relax but surrounded by history and culture. Public toilets are in need of some attention but that aside, it's a lovely square.
Phil H — Google review
Very cute park in a very cute town. Often bands will play and vibes are good
Brandon P — Google review
Eyre Square is the perfect balance between the past and present of Galway. Even on cloudy days, it's full of colour and people. You'll find monuments with incredible stories behind, touristic attractions, thousands of shops both with traditional Irish crafts and clothes and modern ones with things that you will like. There is a shop for everyone, including Corrib Shopping Centre and Eyre Square Centre. There is also a Supermac's across the street, and as it's well known, Supermac's is the favourite fast food establishment for friends, family, and more in Ireland. You will also find ATMs around the Bank of Ireland building. There are also numerous bus stops there since most buses from Eirann pass by Eyre Square before going to and out of town. During summer, they have trading markets, and during winter, they have the Christmas market with plentiful attractions for children and more. In summary, Eyre Square is a great place for locals and tourists.

Loved the short tour in the museum explaining the history of how bog land got to be along the west coast. So interesting! The walk up Diamond Hill has spectacular views and is steep enough to be mildly challenging.
Kenneth W — Google review
We went for the Upper Diamond Hill Track and completed the 7 km and 530 m of elevation gain in roughly 100 minutes. Great trails—although the weather wasn’t ideal and the winds on the red trail were quite strong, which actually added positively to the experience.
Santosh D — Google review
The information center is quite basic and provides little information. The Connemara route, however, is definitely worth it—very beautiful and well signposted.

Class spot for a walk great coffee shop. Entrance to the park is free and loads of free parking. Great view from the top of diamond hill. Tessa walshe from athlone, the first person in the whole wide world to do a little irish dance at the summit 😀

Seafood restaurant
Located in the Claddagh corner of Galway, Oscars Seafood Bistro is a charming restaurant known for its delectable seafood offerings. The interior features a nautical theme with dusky blues and sea greens, creating a delightful ambiance. The menu highlights the Catch of the Day, offering unique dishes such as Japanese-style seaweed steamed oysters and blackened cod with habanero spiced beans.
We booked Oscar’s for a small wedding party and it was just perfect. Right from the start Ilya was so welcoming and gave us so much attention all night. The food was incredible, with a focused menu with interesting options that made it hard to choose. The ingredients are really high quality, and the sauces that came with each dish were delicious. I’d love to go back and try more. We had a lovely night, and can’t recommend it highly enough.
Michael D — Google review
My parents and I managed to get a walk in on a Tuesday night while we were visiting Galway. This restaurant is an absolute Galway must see! Our lovely waiter Ilija/ Ilya had the best wine recommendations, the oysters were the best I have had in Ireland and the fish dishes we had were so good we didn’t even stop to take a photo of it for this review first. It’s a seafood forward restaurant that mixes flavors from all over the world to highlight the beauty of local irish seafood. If you aren’t a seafood fan then this gem will be wasted on you. They even have a gin martini with a fresh oyster in it.
Hannah K — Google review
A little expensive but food was amazing. Seafood wouldnt be my 1st choice but I was good with it and this place did not dissapoint. I got the seabass on the specails menu and wow such a good dish.
Barry A — Google review
The food is exceptional. I enjoyed their special, sea bass, and it was cooked to perfection and the sauce so good. I always eat at Oscar's when I'm in Galway.
Connie A — Google review
Hidden gem. Fresh, innovative flavor combinations, great vibes, and an overall wonderful experience. If you love seafood don't let the lack of online menu or reservations scare you off!
S B — Google review
It was our first time visiting after reading others reviews. If you love sea food, and the guidance on what you want to try and experience then the staff are wonderful to describe the nuances of each dish. Please partake!
Darcy C — Google review
When entered, didn’t feel any welcoming reception. Stood for couple minutes in front of the bar until someone chined up and said hi.
Kingkarn K — Google review
The food was exceptional and the staff very friendly and welcoming. The sauces each had a little twist that made all the difference: star aniseed in the mussels/fish, curry powder in the wild prawns, and something magic in the steak sauce. We were lucky to get a table without a reservation just shortly after they opened for dinner, because they were packed.

Aniar

Fine dining restaurant
Irish restaurant
Aniar is a high-end dining establishment with a bright and homey interior that offers creative, farm-to-plate Irish cuisine and an extensive wine selection. The restaurant follows a 'back-to-nature' ethos, using wood and stone decor to champion ingredients from Ireland's Atlantic Coast. Named after the Irish for 'From the West,' Aniar sources the majority of its ingredients from the land and shores around Galway.
We had a wonderful dinner at Aniar. The service was very thoughtful and friendly and the food was delicious. The night we dined, we had 24 courses and they were all delicious and celebrated Irish food and produce. The food was always beautifully presented and the staff gave wonderful explanations of the food. We got lucky and happened to be dining when Chef JP was working so he actually served us some of our dishes and chatted with us at the end of the meal. He was super friendly and we really appreciated the time he spent talking to us. He also recommended his other two more causal restaurants: Cava Bodega and Kombu. Although we had so many courses which featured a lot of fresh seafood like langoustines, oysters, shrimp, smoked salmon, and mackerel, some highlights include: Irish brown bread with 3 different seeds served with butter A potato dish with spelt, mushroom ragu, topped with potato foam and potato skin tuile served with potato bread Oyster ice cream served in an edible tempura shell Duck with beets & grilled duck heart Aerated blue cheese & fig jam Blackberry sorbet with pickled blackberries The final dessert was a really unique collection of petit fours and I really enjoyed the pate de fruit (apple), torched lavender marshmallow, and miso fudge. We were also sent home with some oat cookies too. The Michelin star is well earned. Definitely come here to enjoy some fine dining in Galway.
Vivian A — Google review
Loved the decor and the concept of the « doors » in the walls containing items local to the area. Wonderful ethos. Except for one dish (which was merely very good!) the food was excellent. The service though was distinctly patchy. We were greeted at the door by someone who seemed not to speak any English, and who kept asking if we were going to do the wine pairing as she was seating us, before we’d even seen the menu. The first few dishes came out far too quickly, some being placed on the table before earlier dishes has been cleared. Two dishes were not even explained, just plonked down. We had to ask someone else what they were. As the meal progressed, dishes started coming out too slowly with long gaps. At this price point the service should be better, and it did feel expensive. The food was truly excellent but this time, the service did not match it.
Carl K — Google review
International staff serve up local produce in this innovative and classy restaurant. The wine pairings are of particular note. This is the closest I've come to food and wine being perfectly matched. Whoever is responsible for it, your palate and ability to pair strikingly similar flavour notes is quite remarkable. The fitout is modern. The attitude, comforting. Aniar is well worth a visit to experience for yourself.
Angus C — Google review
This restaurant is well worth a visit. We made a special trip to sample the wares and we were not disappointed. We had 24 courses over the evening and the wine pairing. It was definitely a unique experience and gave a broad insight into flavours from the west of Ireland.
Tim T — Google review
20 course meal of art, poems, passion and excellence; as a client, you are engaged in an affairs involving the locally sourced food, poems (yes really, a poem that comes with the food!), detailed explanation of each meal, a letter at the end of your meal, a personal thank you by the people that cooked your food. The flavors are bold, innovative, artful.... the people that paint this menu are still very in love with their art. Whether you are in a group or traveling solo, we are all participants of something truly special. I hope they get awarded another 🌟
Jen R — Google review
We had a fabulous experience last night. All of the staff welcomed us so well. Super friendly and top class service. Now for the food... Unreal. Every dish we savoured and hardly spoke until every last bite was consumed before moving on to the next delight. The wine pairing was stunning. The decor the cutlery all so unique yet homely. Everything was wonderful. We really can't wait for the next celebration to return to aniar.
Sinead B — Google review
This was one of my two favorite dining experiences ever. They paired two of the courses with poems. I was particularly excited about this as an English teacher but I think that anyone can appreciate how the poems enhanced understanding about how the food presented has gone on a journey to get to the plate, a journey that was full of human interaction and care. The resteraunt nurtured the idea that food doesn‘t appear without love and toil. This idea will help me consider the path my food takes as I eat going forward.
Leo M — Google review
The 4 of us had a wonderful night at Aniar. We started off being asked to return 20 minutes later, which surprised us, but in the end it made sense: The 24 course meal took 4 hours for us to enjoy. We started at 21:00 and ended at 01:00. All 4 hours were a joy, and we took the Irish drink pairing which was filled with unique flavours. Some of the courses were extremely good hits and absolutely utterly delicious with fantastic flavors. Some of them we did not enjoy at all, such as the oyster icecream, and didn't finish. It was hit and miss, with the hits being incredible. Both gluten free and seafood-less options were made possible, and the table agreed that the seafood-less courses were always the tastier of the options, so I would recommend going for that if possible. The service was good and friendly, and accommodated us as well two separate times when we asked for something specific. Thank you so very much. Highly recommend to try, and bring friends to check out and discuss the flavors as you go along. It is a joy of a time.

Ard Bia at Nimmos is a festive cafe and restaurant located near the River Corrib in County Galway. The restaurant boasts a quirky interior with unsealed reclaimed timber tables and wax-encrusted candlesticks.
Such a special and delicious meal! We had 2 starters and 2 mains and they were all delicious but all had their own individual tastes. The trout and the aubergine were stand out and the wine was also delicious. We also had brilliant service- food was perfectly timed and the waitress we had was so friendly and helpful! Couldn’t recommend this place enough- the atmosphere is gorgeous. Quite expensive so be ready to spend!! But totally worth it

Cute little spot near the Spanish Arch. Line on a Saturday morning was long, but moves quickly! Brunch was delicious. The orange pancakes were fluffy and perfect. the Lebanese Cardamom coffee was amazing- i’ve never had anything like it. My only regret is not trying Ard Bia’s dinner, as i’m sure it would be just as great as brunch :)

This place has to be one of the BEST brunch I’ve ever had! Located right by the river side of the Spanish Arch, lovely view. I ordered the trout and let me tell u, it was so fresh and the taste was next level!!! Soy and sesame cured with spinach and bok choi it was so refreshing! I also couldn’t help myself to order an Apple Cake for dessert even though I was full, the apple cake was light with perfect flavoured apple slices. See pictures urself!

To commemorate our first night in Galway, we decided to have dinner here. Definitely not your typical/traditional Irish food, but we absolutely enjoyed everything we ordered (most especially the grilled peach dish). The fish and pork chop were NOT overcooked and the sauces/broth served with it complemented the while dish. Our waitress was absolutely attentive to our needs. ***I do recommend making a reservation if you plan on dining here.

We had a super cozy meal at Ard Bia’s! We were seated upstairs and I really enjoyed all the natural light in the space. The bar was also set up quite nicely — everything felt very peaceful. Our food was yummy and perfectly filling and our server was friendly. We’ll be back next time we’re in Galway!

If you're in Galway, you must go here for Brunch!! Amazing pancakes, tacos, and french toast. It was so flavorful and every detail was taken into consideration, including presentation of the food. Servers were very kind and attentive. We had to wait outside for 15 minutes for obvious reasons, everyone wants to eat here!

They went beyond , it was clear that the team was focused to give a great experience to the guests. The food , in one word DELICIOUS Loved the Irish coffee prepared with baileys . Thing to note , the hot whiskey we paid 5-6 EUROS in other restaurants but here it was a whooping double the price. Would suggest to check the prices of the drinks if ordering some thing outside the stated menu. Rest enjoy your meal. Highly recommend the restaurant

Ard Bia is beyond charming, and everything we had was freaking delicious! We were there for brunch-- and we promptly returned the following day for more. You can't go wrong with any of the choices, and the chai was so flavorful and not overly sweet. One member of our party has very specific food restrictions, and the team at Ard Bia were knowledgeable and so clear with ensuring she also had an amazing experience. They even helped us find other restaurants for meals later in the day!

Kai Restaurant, located in Galway city on the western coast of Ireland, offers organic European dishes in a vibrant setting with colorful chairs and rustic wooden tables. Chef Jess Murphy creates Kiwi-inspired comfort food using locally-sourced ingredients. The restaurant is just a short walk from the popular Galway Market, where visitors can enjoy home-baked treats, locally sourced fish, cheeses at Sheridan's Cheesemongers & Wine Bar, and browse handcrafted jewelry and art by local artisans.
Hands down the best meal in Galway. Fresh ingredients, lovely staff, and a beautiful inside. The detailed menu is written on a chalk board above the kitchen and it may be small but it's mighty. Every dish is wonderful and the desserts are a must. We had the most divine Key Lime Pie. Can't wait to come back and enjoy another meal. Wish I could give it 10 stars!
Paul B — Google review
Snagged a 6 PM reservation at Kai yesterday for tonight. Wow, wife & I so pleased we were able to experience a meal here! Terrific service, friendly atmosphere, casual feel throughout. But the care in preparation & presentation becomes immediately apparent once the dishes are served. Wife started with a lovely Sauv Blanc varietal while I enjoyed an August special 1800 Paloma cocktail. She ordered and enjoyed the crab appetizer with roe while I loved the subtle flavors in the mackerel served sushi style ( that would’ve been just a touch better if offered with chopsticks). Our main courses were simply ginormous portions. Her med rare strip steak (easily 10+ oz) with Bloody Mary Butter was so rich-indescribably good. My whole Black Sole served with bone in was seasoned and prepared perfectly, delicately flavorful and delicious. We simply could hardly enjoy the side green salad or the scrumptious potatos. I did finish it off with a lovely tawny port wine digestive. Needless to say, I highly recommend Kai! Come hungry.

Was recommended this restaurant but wanted to keep a flexible schedule so didn’t make a reservation. We stumbled in here from nearby crane bar and got super lucky to snag a table from a missed reservation. The waiters/ waitress were so friendly and happy to fit us in. The atmosphere was homey and rustic but still upscale. And the food was terrific. Highly recommend!!
Alex A — Google review
This may be the best restaurant in all of Ireland. The service is friendly and laid-back, the menu is interesting and varied, and the drinks list does not disappoint. A few weeks ago I asked ChatGPT for a restaurant recommendation in Galway, and it immediately pointed me to Kai. Thank you to our new robot overlords for the suggestion, and thank you to the team for a truly wonderful lunch experience. We had the hake fish finger feature and some gorgeous little fritters, each served with a flirty little salad and fresh-baked bread. They also have a cheeky selection of local bottled zero-proof drinks including some cute lemonades and sodas (try the Irish apple juice—or as the Irish call it, “Apple juice”). 10/10 would go back.
Paul N — Google review
Incredible meal!! We loved the way that this restaurant had a refreshed take on Irish ingredients and Galway dishes. Ordered the whole mackerel, cod filet, and raw oysters! Absolutely delish! This spot is not to be missed!!
Lennis B — Google review
Absolutely loved this place. Great food and service, with a very cozy dining atmosphere! Managed to get into this restaurant as a walk in but we have limited dining time. The crab and roe starter had a good combination of refreshing and a crab mix with a spice kick to it. The steak portion was generous and the pak choi that accompanies the steak was very delicious. There is a slight spice to the meat which brought the flavor together very well. Overall a great experience and would highly recommend for a special event. The price is on the higher side relatively to food in Galway, but worth checking it out nonetheless.
Hann W — Google review
Disappointing. Given the many positive reviews, we had high expectations. We should have read through the reviews more carefully, as our experience was similar to that shared in about 1/5 of the reviews by others below. Atmosphere is really nice. Service is good, but nothing special given the price and reputation -- perfunctory comes to mind. The real disappointment was the food. The parma appetizer was great. The rest of the dishes, however, while cooked really well, were either remarkably bland, as if missing key ingredients, or plain off with mismatched ingredients. There are numerous better restaurants for this price across Ireland, including within a few blocks away in Galway.
Jerry D — Google review
The best meal we had our entire visit to Ireland. I would come back across the ocean just for the crab salad. All of our mains were exceptionally good. The beef cheek and polenta were tender and flavorful, the pork chop was cooked perfectly, and the pannisse was addictive.

Oh my god were we blown away with this restaurant! The inside of the restaurant was cozy and charming with a lively atmosphere. The service was very friendly and helpful without trying to over serve you. The food was absolutely delicious and a 10/10! One of the best restaurants I’ve been to in a long while and the presentation was amazing. Can’t recommend enough!

I had dinner with a group of 6 people so we were able to try a lot of items. The menu has many choices and the service was very quick. Everything we ate was delicious but the aubergine fritters, jamón croquettes, and lamb special were my favorites. We ordered 12 tapas (2 per person) and it was just the right amount of food for us. I would recommend a meal at Cava Bodega if you enjoy tapas!
Vivian A — Google review
We decided to try this place while in Galway for my birthday. The food was amazing! We had some jamon iberico to start with. A very large platter with all sort of accompaniments. Just lovely. Then we had the lamb shoulder and pork belly accompanied with some spinach and patatas bravas. Everything was so good, especially the spinach, just a simple dish with excellent flavors. The lamb with polenta and pork belly were so flavorful and just melted in our mouths. I then had some pear and quince sorbet for dessert. It was a fun experience, have never tried anything like it before. The service was also very good, we did not have to wait long for the food and the plates came as soon as they were ready. Would recomend this place to anyone visiting Galway.
Rakel B — Google review
Came here last minute on a busy Sunday when the restaurant was fully booked. I asked if I could be seated outdoors, having heard great things about the food—and it was absolutely worth it. The spinach dish and the scallops were outstanding. A definite must-try. So refreshing to discover such creative and flavorful dishes.

Wow, we loved it here!! We ordered a decent amount of the tapas and every single one was mouth watering. The pork belly, cucumber, roasted garlic aioli tapas was our FAVORITE, with the mussels coming a close second (both dishes pictured). Wine selection here was also unmatched. A must visit!

Moran's Oyster Cottage

Seafood restaurant
Nestled along the Weir at Kilcolgan, Moran's Oyster Cottage is a charming family-run establishment that specializes in gigas oysters and a variety of delightful local seafood dishes. This quaint thatched cottage, with its rich history dating back to 1790, sits just upstream from where the Dunkellin River meets Dunbulcaun Bay—an area renowned for its fresh oyster trade.
This is my seventh day in Ireland on this trip and this is the best (eat out) meal so far! Fresh WILD and natural oysters are so sweet that’s out of this world. But it’s not all about the oysters. Must also have the chowder, brown bread and clams (from the special menu). Bread was soft with crunchy crusts and cut in perfect thinness. Clams were cooked in perfection to conserve its natural sweetness and well balanced with white wine and butter sauce. Seafood chowder contained all the goodness from the sea in a just right not too light or too thick creamy broth that is utterly gorgeous. And of course, all the great good must be accompanied by a pint of Guinness or a local G&T for good measures. For Gin, Gunpowder was my choice of the day. Good atmosphere, great music, booking is recommended even in the so called “quieter period” today. All in all, a good crack! Highly recommended.

Moran’s has a wonderful, casually upscale, cheerful, and comfortable atmosphere. The staff are exceptional, anticipating our wishes, needs and questions, and meeting them with a friendly demeanor. Though the menu provided a smaller selection, the food was delicious. I had the tiger prawn salad, and my husband enjoyed oysters and cod. It was all excellent and ample! Prices are what you might expect for this kind of experience. I absolutely recommend this restaurant for a special lunch or dinner out. Cheers!

This was probably our favorite place to eat at on our entire trip. It's a small business. the menus are beautiful and simple. It was incredibly clean. Very well organized. Loved this place. It was our first day in Galway and this was a good beginning. We ordered two large glasses of Rose and took in the atmosphere. It's very nice she's cozy inside. They have their a la carte menu as well as a pre theater one and the whole table does not need to participate. So I got their special oysters which were one of the best ones I've had. My daughter got their salmon done in an Asian style with a side of chips. I then got the salmon and the sticky toffee pudding from the pre theater menu. My husband got the prawns, salmon and the sticky toffee pudding. Everything was delicious. Now I'm a sticky toffee pudding snob and this one was average. It didn't have enough sauce. But overall the experience was really good. I would highly recommend it.

The booking process at Brasserie on the Corner was smooth and hassle-free. They were very prompt in replying when I asked to move our reservation to an earlier time ,great customer service from the start. We arrived a bit early and waited briefly, which was totally fine. A gentleman ( believe his name was Rory), kindly guided us to our table. Our server, Neil, was incredibly welcoming and accommodating throughout. I had mentioned in advance that it was my daughter’s birthday, and when I reminded Neil, he didn’t miss a beat. They gave her a lovely surprise, complete with the team singing Happy Birthday and presenting a dessert beautifully plated with “Happy Birthday” written on it. It truly made the moment extra special. Huge thanks to Neil and the team! The food was absolutely delicious. We skipped the starters as we had eaten earlier at a café, but the mains were superb, cooked perfectly and full of flavour. The ambience was spot on,cozy and relaxing. I had requested a quiet, private table, and they granted that perfectly. Everything from service to food to atmosphere was just top-notch. I’m genuinely super impressed with this restaurant. 😍👌 Highly recommended for special occasions or just a quality dining experience in Galway!

Located at Glenlo Abbey Hotel in the outskirts of Galway, Pullman Restaurant is a unique dining experience set within two meticulously restored train carriages that were featured in the 1974 film 'Murder on the Orient Express.' The carriages boast brass luggage racks and mahogany paneling, creating an impressive ambiance. The menu showcases wild game, fish, and beef with a focus on traceable ingredients. Guests can enjoy French-style flair and fine bone china while overlooking Lough Corrib.
Our second visit to the Pullman exactly one year apart. The restaurant remains the same but there has been a change in the kitchen and the service, all for the better. The new head chef is preparing the restaurant for a Michelin star rating in 2025 and we could immediately tell from the standard of dishes and service provided. The food was absolutely exceptional throughout and cannot wait to see what 2025 brings with their planned renovations. Highly recommend the venison. Cooked to perfection.

From the start to the end it was an experience. A safari of dishes mafe with a chef with a salient eye for detail. The orient express carriage takes you away, enabling a step out of reality and providing the escapism we often all so crave. Led by Ian, the restaurant manager, he is endowed with his exceptional front of house team. Sophie was excellent also. She could really put a spin on the explanations and the staff seemed so engaged. The team are so well drilled and they know their product inside out. As regards the food offering, we thought this was exceptional. Service was razor sharp. From the quality of the food down to the chefs magic with herbs, the provenance of the dishes, the cooking styles and just the crockery, cutlery and general magic that prevaded throughout the experience. If you like a treat or like fine dining. This is a must do. We opted for the wine pairing. It was sublime. Take a bow.

Our waitresses Alex and Hannah were so knowledgeable and beyond lovely. Not to mention, you’re having dinner in a legit train car, beyond cool!! The grounds at Genlo Abbey were beyond gorgeous, truly a 5 star experience! Can’t recommend this restaurant enough! An absolute MUST if you’re in Galway!

Bring on the Michelin Stars! The food was amazing! All the courses utilized local resources. The dishes were all beautiful and delicious. Chef Angelo himself gave us an after dinner tour of the kitchen with such confidence and pride. We were warmly introduced to the Sous and Pastry Chefs. The kitchen was a mixture of an art studio and chemistry lab designed to serve dishes both pleasing to the eye and the pallet. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, striking a perfect balance between elegance and comfort. Soft lighting, tasteful décor, and an attentive staff set the stage for what for a dining experience on the Orient Express. What truly set this restaurant apart was not only the quality of the food but the way it was presented—each plate was a canvas, and each dish a work of art. The service was impeccable, with knowledgeable servers who were happy to offer thoughtful wine pairings and describe each course in detail. In every way, this restaurant delivered an exceptional dining experience. Whether you’re a devoted foodie or someone simply looking for a memorable night out, this place deserves a spot at the top of your list. I can’t wait to return.

So cool! Would give them 10/5 stars if possible on atmosphere. Eating in an old train-car - a first. Great service. Food was excellent. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Really neat venue - if you are staying at Glenlo make sure this is one of the evening dining choices (make a reservation). Very glad we ate here!
Jonathan P — Google review
INCREDIBLE!!!! Eating on one of two train cars originally from the Orient Express was an awesome package at Glenlo Abbey. Yes it's quite a bit more costly but overall a once in a lifetime experience. Our room (luckily and maybe purposely) looked out over the trains as we eagerly awaited eating there. We were 'boarded' at our reservation time by a man in full train attire and handed train tickets which just added to the experience. The initial ambiance was on point. Our waiter fit the part as well and was prompt to greet us. We also received a goat cheese filled mini waffle cone as a treat after ordering and tarts after dessert. Our deal included a three-course meal including bread. The bread was really delicious and more of a French bread type of crust yet soft inside. The appetizers we ordered were absolutely delicious as well. As our meals came out and we were greeted with a show of revealing the plates which added a little pizzazz. The entire meal is what you would expect from a five-star restaurant. The drinks we ordered were amazing too!!!! Sitting in our booths and learning that the likes of Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin were once guests on the train along with many other old time celebrities. These cars were also used to transport Winston Churchill to his final resting place. We were seated in the 'Leona' which is one of the oldest cars. Overall, this was an amazing experience. Highly recommend you upgrade to this package.

Excellent place. The professional Daniel took excellent care of us and the cod was the best I have tasted in the oven so far after 5 years living in Ireland. Very nice place that maintains the essence of haute hospitality. We will be back.
Gustavo F — Google review
Such a cool and unique experience. You're dining on two of the original orient express carts. There are two dining carts and two private dining carts. We were lucky enough to be seated in a private cart. It was so lovely. The small attention to details like the subtle train track sound effects made it feel really special and immersive. The staff was also so lovely. The food was also pretty good. Definitely more gastro inspired, so be prepared for some unique flavors and combinations/smaller portions. Not all of them were necessarily my cup of tea, but still worth a visit if you're in the area. We're so glad we went, especially for the ambiance!

Seafood restaurant
Kirwan's is a charming two-floor restaurant located on Kirwan's Lane in Galway, Ireland. The restaurant boasts a cozy atmosphere with pine furnishings and framed pictures, and occasionally features live jazz music.
They got me in on a Saturday night with no reservation, I got to sit under the tent as it rained with the heaters it was so lovely. The service was quicker than ever and kind as well. The food was amazing fresh bread w creamy butter, a slightly sweet lobster risotto but when you add the lemon and some fresh cracked pepper perfection, oysters were the best I’ve had I just don’t know if I’m an oyster girl Thank you!

It was a nice place to visit. It's a very big restaurant with seating outside, inside and on the first floor. We were day upstairs that had a bar as well. We started with a very delicious carafe of red wine. They gave us some yummy bread for the table with some delicious butter. My daughter ordered their prawns as her main and a side of vegetables. My husband ordered the steak and I ordered the seabass. Everything was done well but it wasn't excellent. We enjoyed our meal and the service was very good. We ended with a pistachio creme brulee which was very good!
Monica B — Google review
Unfortunately, I got food poisoning from the oysters. I also had the lobster risotto, which was heavy. It tasted ok. I had the pistachio creme brûlée for dessert, which was also just ok. I wouldn’t recommend this place based on my experience. It was also extremely loud. Service was 10/10, great staff.

I still think about this meal. It was the first meal of our trip and we just happened to walk by and they had a table ready for us pretty quick! I still dream about these mussels. A fantastic seafood dinner to lead into a night heading to different pubs. A breath of fresh air and fine dining before a night of pints all over town. But for real, order the mussels. I'm going back to Galway JUST to eat here. Great wine list too and fantastic service staff.
Nick D — Google review
The service was great, beer, wine- awesome. But chowder with some strange stuff inside, like the thickener(can be wrong), and the risotto its just like an oatmeal, not the original italian risotto. But tasty. So overall 3 from 5.

A wonderful find in Galway for a nicer dinner! I went with my parents while we are here on holidays and it was such a great find. The oysters, mussels and fish were incredible as was the fresh veggies. We were seated outside under some nice heaters so my parents were wonderfully toasty. and our server Marcus was so lovely and gave us a lot of great recommendations both for what to order here as well as were to grab an early breakfast and was super accommodating to my father who has hearing aids and struggles in loud spaces like restaurants. We loved it so much we mag even be back tomorrow!

The customer service was amazing. Didn't realize it was graduation night, so all restaurants were booked. The gentlement at the front squeezed us in. Amazing food. 10/10
Thomas H — Google review
We booked ahead at short notice and sat at the bar, which gave a nice view of the busy kitchen. The staff were friendly throughout with just the right amount of interaction as we ate. Portions were excellent, in fact the sides we ordered weren't really necessary, though we enjoyed them anyway. We had delicious melt-in-your-mouth beef rib with perfectly-cooked crispy and not too greasy battered onion rings to start and a great (supposedly small) portion of mussels in a lightly spiced tomato and nduja sauce. Both excellent and generously portioned for starters. Mains had to be fish in this famous seafood restaurant and the monkfish with curried lentils and sea bass with mussels did not disappoint. The only shame was I didn't have enough room for dessert! We also had a lovely bottle of tempranillo from their extensive wine menu. Highly recommended, can't wait to return and try their lunch offerings.

McDonagh's

Fish & chips restaurant
McDonagh's is a traditional, family-run chippy and seafood restaurant in Galway that has been serving customers since 1902. The cozy maritime-themed dining room and deli offer a casual charm with an incredible variety of sustainable seafood options. With over 115 years of experience, McDonagh's is renowned for serving some of the best fish in the city.
Went to Galway for the day and this place was highly recommended. I had the fried Cod and chips with a small Coke. The fish was so fresh with a nice portion, and the chips very hearty and tasty. Wonderful homemade tartar sauce, but no ice for the drink. I think this is a trend in Ireland. Second place to not offer it. Very festive restaurant to eat as you people watch the crowd on the promenade.
Karen S — Google review
Popped in for a quick lunch ... service was amazingly fast for a super busy period. Fresh seafood... we had the hake, mackerel, sausage , fresh oysters and chips.... no complaints.
Ratna N — Google review
It can be a bit hectic here since it's located right at the "entrance" to the Latin Quarter. But the line goes quickly and the service is great, helping you to order the right type of fish and amount of sides. It was also fairly easy to find a table, which you need to wait until you order to claim. We got cod, hake, and salmon as our fish, and chips, mashed peas, and coleslaw as sides. We shared everything so we could try a bit of it all and the fish was all fantastic! For having it ready so quickly, they do a great job preparing it here. The mashed peas were also tasty but the coleslaw was a bit too mayo-heavy for our tastes. All in all, a solid choice if you've had a pint or two or you're just looking for a hearty meal after a day of exploring Galway.
Geoffrey H — Google review
Friendly and casual environment for a simple meal of fish and chips. Prices are definitely lower than all the pubs along the street, but there is no compromise in quality. The cod is moist and flaky, without being too oily. Staff are friendly and simple ordering process. Food will be served and do consider a carlsberg or guinness? They are serves in cans. :)
Jeffery N — Google review
This place is one of the most famous spots for fish and chips in Galway—you’ll see it on pretty much every “must-try” list. What’s cool is you can actually choose the type of fish (cod, salmon, etc.) and they also serve a variety of seafood dishes and oysters. I went with their classic cod fish and chips and it was delicious—fresh out of the fryer, piping hot, and super satisfying. The chips were nice and crispy too! Staff were quick and really friendly. Can’t wait to come back and try more of their seafood next time.
Carrie G — Google review
We visited McDonagh's on a Saturday right at opening. There was already a line but ordering was very quick. We were able to grab a table indoors & they bring you the food when it's ready. We had cod, salmon, mushy peas, and chips. The fish portions were really generous and very tasty. The battery was very crispy and thin! Although I liked both fishes, I preferred the salmon. The mushy peas were OK - I've had better. It tasted a little watery and needed more seasoning. The chips were fresh but also ok (I think I just don't like thick chips). Would definitely recommend coming here for the fish though.

Fresh and tasty fish & chips! Crispy batter, tender fish, and quick service. Classic spot in Galway. Very busy, but totally worth the wait. A must-try when you’re in town!
Kamilo — Google review
We loved the smoked cod and chips here, and the Oysters were amazing - bursting with flavour and incredibly fresh and the cold Guinness with them was a perfect combination, this place is historic, nicely decorated and well worth a visit, 5 stars, well recommended.

Transportation in Galway

Getting around Galway can be a little daunting if you’re new here. We can help list some of the major public transportation methods if you don’t want to rely on a car.

Nearby airports

Ireland West Airport Knock

International airport
Ireland West Airport Knock is conveniently located just a 2-hour drive from Dublin, Belfast, and Galway, as well as an hour from Donegal. It's also only 50 minutes away by car from the airport with flights to various destinations in the UK, Spain, Portugal, and The Canaries. The airport offers ample parking with great value for long-stay parking and a short walk to the terminal.
Despite a power cut that caused an hour's delay, I have to say my experience at the airport was fantastic overall. Sometimes, things are just out of our control, and this was one of those moments. The airport itself was surprisingly calm and relaxed, much quieter than I expected. The staff really stood out—they were incredibly helpful and polite, which made the experience so much easier and more enjoyable. Even with the delay, I left with a positive impression and would definitely visit again in the future.

Above excellent Such a great amenity to have on our doorstep. Easy parking Easy departures Lovely departure lounge and shops Fast boarding
Padraig ( — Google review
It's a quieter airport than I am used to, which is a definitive plus. It would have been 5 stars if I had not had the surprise of paying a €10 charge at the point of departure check-in as a "Development fee" Apparently it was in the small print somewhere! I would be far happier if this was added to the airfare as a charge beforehand. Then you know what you're paying from the outset and it removes an added queue and hurdle to the check-in process, rather than feeling like a sharp practice.
Gerald B — Google review
A lovely small airport that is very convenient to get around.
Thomas M — Google review
Great to fly, fast check-in and security Very relaxed. Just remember the parking fee I’ll need to compare it to Belfast and Dublin but we had less of a drive so makes sense in the end. But it’s a extra shock when you land so perhaps pre pay do it’s less of a bummer feeling as it’s bad enough coming home to the rain 😂
K — Google review
The airport charges an extra €10 “airport development fee” that you must pay before going through security — otherwise, you won’t be allowed through. The fee isn’t included in your ticket price, as it often is at other airports, which feels like a marketing trick: advertise cheap flights, then add hidden costs later. On top of that, you also have to stand in line just to pay this fee, so make sure to factor in extra time. Public transport is another issue — early morning flights on Sundays aren’t served by buses, so unless you have a car, you’re likely stuck paying for a taxi. Worth keeping in mind when booking.
Liza K — Google review
Ireland West Airport is a gem. It's a fantastic airport, the staff are always friendly and helpful and the facilities are modern and top-notch. From the moment you arrive, you'll be greeted with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. What I really appreciate about Ireland West is how easy it is to get flights to the UK and Europe. There are regular direct flights to London, Manchester, Birmingham and several major European cities. You don't have to navigate the hassle of Dublin Airport, and you can save yourself a lot of time and stress. I'm so grateful we have such an excellent airport here in the West of Ireland. It's a real asset to the region and makes it easy for us to connect with the rest of the world. If you're looking for an stress-free and convenient flying experience, I highly recommend Ireland West Airport. Here are some of the things I love about Ireland West Airport: - Friendly and helpful staff - Spacious and well-maintained facilities for work or dining - Regular direct flights to the UK and Europe - Easy and Affordable parking options
Corey O — Google review
Ok airport very little to do once you are on the other side. Also the 10 euro 'development fee' is something I'd expect to see in a developing country, you include these costs in the ticket price. No bottle refill stations which is beyond a scam in this day and age especially considering the country is doing a recycle scheme where you need to pay 15cent a bottle/can where you get it refunded later. Time to get your act together knock.

Shannon Airport

International airport
Airport
Shannon Airport, an international airport serving Ireland's west coast since 1945, offers a hassle-free travel experience with its convenient location and well-maintained parking facilities. The airport provides a diverse selection of destinations and a pleasant duty-free shopping experience. Situated close to the medieval quarter of Limerick City, it is within walking distance of classic landmarks such as King John's Castle and The Hunt Museum.
Shannon Airport is a pleasure to travel through. There's plenty of space, which makes the whole experience less stressful and more comfortable. Several cafes are available for a quick bite or coffee before your flight. The airport also features a nice playground for kids, which is a big plus for families. And the bus station is conveniently located just outside the main entrance — super easy for travelers. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Eugen B — Google review
Shannon Airport is a very beautiful and spacious airport. It’s clean, well-maintained, and has a calm, welcoming atmosphere. There are a few nice stores to browse while waiting for your flight, and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout my visit. It’s not the biggest airport, but that actually makes it easier to get around, which I appreciated. Overall, a pleasant experience and a great airport to travel through.
Jay — Google review
Shannon Airport is a fantastic choice for travellers looking for a smooth and efficient airport experience. With just one passenger terminal, it's compact and easy to navigate - no long queues or endless corridors like in larger hubs such as Dublin. The smaller scale makes check-in and security much quicker, which is a real advantage. Parking is another strong point: there’s plenty of space right next to the terminal, and it’s reasonably priced - cheaper than Dublin Airport - which adds to the overall convenience. One of the biggest time-savers is the use of modern security scanners. You don’t need to take laptops, electronics or liquids out of your bags, which speeds things up significantly and makes the whole process far less stressful. The terminal is spotlessly clean and clearly well cared for. While the number of shops is modest, they are well-selected for last-minute travel needs. There’s also a small food court offering a decent variety of quick meals. However, one noticeable drawback is the very limited availability of gluten-free options - definitely an area where improvement is needed. While the location may not be ideal for everyone, it’s conveniently situated just off the motorway between Galway and Limerick, making it accessible for much of the west of Ireland. The range of connections is decent and gradually expanding. Overall, Shannon is my preferred airport in Ireland, and I sincerely hope it continues to grow. It combines comfort, speed, and practicality in a way that makes flying a lot more pleasant. Highly recommended!
Michal — Google review
So much easier than Dublin. Will Ideally fly from here any chance I get from now on. Nicely laid out and easy to navigate, has everything you’d typically need in an airport. Preclearance for U.S. bound flights was also stress free and quick. The only gripe is the usual airport parking costing an arm and a leg per day you forget to pre book (I don’t know how much pre booking the blue red and orange car parks cost yet)
Joe C — Google review
I go here for all of my flights, this is because it has quick security queues, a lot of destinations and lounges to relax unlike any other airport. The lounges include a lot of stores, places to get food and drinks before your flight and a nice plane model gallery. PS: There is also a gallery before security
Kewin M — Google review
Not a bad stop as far as connecting flights go. The staff were super nice, the coffee was hot, and the terminal was clean and comfortable. Appreciate the polite and professional staff that helped us get on our flight in a timely manner.
Chris H — Google review
This airport offers a pleasant travel experience. The staff members provide excellent customer service, ensuring a smooth and comfortable journey. Ample parking is available, eliminating the stress of finding a space. The facilities are well-maintained and contribute to a positive overall impression. Travelers will appreciate the convenience and friendly atmosphere of this airport.
Kacper W — Google review
I’ve been at this airport for maybe an hour and it’s probably my worst experience at an airport. I’ll start with the outlets. The outlets for you to charge your devices do not work. If you’re wondering why it’s probably their way of forcing you to pay for the charging stations. There’s a lounge but apparently they do not allow military/ US military. So despite that I have a lounge membership I am not allowed to enter their lounge and must pay for the amenities that I would have had access to at the lounge without additional charges. At least the WiFi is free despite the requirement to register your email address.
