Iowa City

Iowa City is in eastern Iowa. The Old Capitol Building, the state's first capitol, now houses a museum of local history. The adjacent University of Iowa Museum of Natural History features prehistoric stone tools and taxidermy. By the Iowa River, City Park has ponds and sports facilities. East, the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum displays objects and photos tracing the life of the 31st U.S. president.

I went to university of iowa for my hearing implant schedule...easy to get to .the parking was good went to the top & nobody to bother you ..just write the number where you are =the floor#& you got it Mark
Their referral process to their pulmonology department takes 5-10 days, I was told, when I called. On top of that, it takes time to actually get in for an appointment, I was quoted another 2-3 weeks. When someone has suspected or potential lung cancer, this is a horrible wait time. Meanwhile, Iowa Health Clinics got me in for my first appointment within 2 days and a PET scan within the first week and a half. For Iowa City supposedly being the "best" in the state, this is below standard care. Iowa City still has yet to call me (this was all found out back on April 4th, it's now April 19th), I already have next steps and a diagnosis with Iowa Health Clinics. Time, when it comes to lung cancer, can be the difference between stage 1 and stage 3-4. This is extremely unacceptable.
Proud Alumni of UIOWA. I will forever remember this place. Once a Hawkeye Always a Hawkeye.
I recently traveled to The University of Iowa, my alma mater (Class of 1989), for the first time in 25 years! It was a road trip from Chicago with an old friend whose daughter now goes there. We encountered great service, prices, friendly people, etc. There was "Caitlin Clark Mania" going on still on campus in celebration of the NCAA/Iowa girl's basketball legend who recently broke all NCAA scoring records & brought her team to the Finals. There was such a great vibe on campus while we were there, Iowa City & the university were jumping! We also stayed overnight at a great new hotel that was conveniently located near everything right in the downtown area! Check out Iowa!
My relative went Today to ER Room and they discovered that to order to get in visit or be a companion you have to show an a IA driver's license or valid id And I think they shouldn't ask or request any kind of id to get in and also they don't have not room available and the wanting period or was 5 to 6 hrs so my relative they desired to go to Mercy hospital to get the service done
As many many many have said parking is probably equivalent to purgatory. The way the valet people park cars around the entrances make pulling up to the entrance and dropping someone off problematic at best. The hospital staff as a rule is helpful and glad to be of assistance. Beware of the almost CONSTANT construction going on both on campus and off. Give yourself extra time to get to were you need to be in the hospital. Don't be afraid to use the PAT transport.
got a bill for taking my autistic son in which is all they did was ask us parents questions. Did not get any help. Waste of time and all about money. would not recommend. I wouldn't even give one star but to post this I had to.Go to texas university if you want a good college.
Having had done my undergraduate at 3 different colleges (2 universities and 1 community college), and done my grad work at UI; I can say I have a pretty experienced opinion and UI is the worst college I've been to. It's essentially an adult day care for parents of rich, snobby adult students who act like teens and only want to part.

A wonderful bit of history to enjoy in the University of Iowa campus. We found paid parking spots nearby for up to 2 hours (coins and cards welcome). The museum itself is free but a donation box sits inside the entrance for anyone willing to contribute. Two friendly students welcomed us and gave a nice description of what we could find. We enjoyed the self-guided tour at a leisurely pace and appreciated the beauty and thorough descriptions of the rooms/exhibits. The bathrooms were clean and well-stocked and the gift shop was charming. I could have posted more pictures but you should check it out in person. 😉
Awesome. Great place to spend the afternoon. Very educational, pretty cool to see the history and standing in places where the state decisions were made. Best part, its free. Thank you.
If you're in the Iowa City area, you should definitely stop in to see the Old Capitol. There is so much history in this place. It's free to get in and doesn't take long to get through unless you're reading every exhibit.
Beautiful from the outside. Unfortunately it was closed for a private event and we couldn’t go inside. Would’ve been nice to have that posted on the website before we made the trip to visit.
We doubt about stopping in this town, After we walked around we found great restaurants and a lot of historic buildings, Zero regrets Visiting this cozy place.
This is a very cool little piece of Americana history. I really apreciate that they really keep restrictions as minimal as possible. You can really get right up to the artifacts. I really apreciated the extra tid bits about interactions with Native peoples. The place is really cleen and well done. The bathrooms are nice too. The room in the basement level also has so modern things done for the university. A great place to take photos and everyone was friendly it's also free!
Gal at the front was incredibly helpful! Building is beautiful and well-built, especially after the fire. There's a great display in the basement of before and after the fire and some knowledgeable ladies who were going into the Archive Room down there. It was fun to see the difference in the Old Capitol Senate and House Rooms and the ones in the Des Moines Capitol. Fun facts are posted in all the rooms as well. The gift shop had a lot of neat stuff in it too!
The Old Capitol remains one of the most recognizable symbols of the state of Iowa.  In the many years since the cornerstone was laid, the building has served state legislatures, countless university uses, and has undergone multiple additions and renovations, even surviving a major fire in 2001.

There is an accessible section where there is shale you can roll up to. The majority is walking. I recommend bringing a sketch book and some pencils for the kids and teaching them to imprint. We're adults, and we also loved doing this. Remember to preserve the space and leave the fossils. We saw some people with buckets and were saddened as, over time, this leads to fossil land loss. Overall, it was a great experience for all.
There were a LOT less fossils in harder to spot than I thought they would be! Half of the time when I heard someone exclaim "There's a fossil!" I would want to go over there and see it as I wasn't seeing much. At the "back" take the narrow path on the left to more uncovered rock/fossils. Then there's the pond and a lovely wide paved path along the river to walk.
Theres literally fossils everywhere! They're sea creatures and corals, not T Rex and big dinosaurs. Go walk down onto the rocks and then get real close, look down and you'll see fossils literally everywhere!! This is one of those amazing off the beaten path stops that I highly recommend. We could have spent 2 hours here easily looking at everything. Theres no RV parking, however its right next to a campground, so we spent the night here and drove down to it, though you could also walk from the campground.
This was a great evening place to walk and explore for kids and adults. It was a great seeking adventure. Unfortunately the VC is closed for renovations (July 2025) where the skull of a prehistoric mean looking fish is. But there were plenty of shells and coral to find. Really cool find.
I couldn't see the fossils and I thought it was more a place where you could find fossils. However, it is a pretty area and pleasant to walk through.
Upon entry it doesn’t look like much, but once you get up close to the rocks there is lots to explore. My toddler loved splashing through the puddles and looking for fossils. We were there for about an hour and only a couple other families/groups were out at the same time as us.
The visitors center is closed for renovations until further notice. We did find the fossil bed & enjoyed walking the bed & seeing the fossils
This natural area is stunning! Truly beautiful views of the river and the wildflowers are fantastic. I found several of the smaller fossil, what a neat place. The trails are nice, but the woodpecker trail has lots of flying insects. I saw a deer on the way in, and a cardinal, painted turtle, and frog in the park itself. If you’re anywhere near Cedar Rapids, come here!

We had a great experience performing for a non-profit event that was being hosted by Kinnick Stadium. It was a very beautiful and accessible space! The event was great and kiddos loved playing on the field!
Kinnick is an awesome place to take in a game. Make sure you reserve you parking online as all the lots are prepay only.
Iowa's Kinnick Stadium is one of the most underrated stadium environments to watch a Big 10 or College football game. The Iowa Alumni, Student section, and general fans bring the heat to opponents with their loud, boisterous nature that has been building for a full day. As a Penn State fan who has attended games between the Nittany Lions and Hawkeyes (2008, 2010, 2012, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2025) it's a budding rivalry full of palace intrique in Kinnick Stadium!
I'm a Penn State fan and I was there for my first Iowa away game. We were welcomed by the Iowa fans. It's a very nice stadium. I love the brickwork and arches. The stripe out was very cool as well as the first quarter wave to the patients in the hospital. The view from our seats in row 27, sec 101 felt very close to the endzone action. Cool atmosphere on the walk to the stadium! The tailgates were along the route in the neighborhoods around the stadium.
1st time there. Seats in North Endzone. Had great view of field. Fans around us were good. Easy in/ easy out. The Wave!
This was my first time at this stadium. they killed the Gophers 41-3. Beautiful campus and its so touching how the whole stadium waves to the children in the hospital after the first quarter. what a great tradition!
One of the best stadiums I’ve been to! Great atmosphere and the wave to the kids in the hospital gave me goosebumps. 10/10 will definitely be back
Absolutely amazing!!! First time making it there. So amazing the feeling when you walk through the gates is so great!!! I hope to make it there for more games!!!! LETS GO HAWKS!!!!

I have been going here since I was a kid. I've taken my children here as a parent. This place is amazing. Iowa history, biodiversity, animals, and prehistory. Some of the exhibits look worn and faded but some of them are well over a hundred years old. What an outstanding place to spend an afternoon with the family. OKish parking and central location in the Old Capital area make it easy to get in and out. A must visit for anyone in Eastern Iowa.
Awesome. Great place to spend the afternoon. Very educational and lots of work and care have gone into the displays. Best part, its free. Thank you.
Really cool museum on the campus of the University of Iowa. The students working the front desk were extremely welcoming and friendly and told me everything I needed to know about the museum. There are three floors of exhibits including the natural history of Iowa, mammals, and birds. This museum is also free, although there's a donation box. The staff were not pushy at all about donating.
An excellent museum of natural history. Full of detailed information. Many of the exhibits are very vivid; the scenes have a lot going on. The taxidermy is superb. Admission is free.
The natural history museum is definitely one of my all time favorite free activities in downtown Iowa city. There is rarely a big crowd and the taxidermy is well done. I can't wait for my kiddo to get older so he can learn more. My only complaint would be the ineffective air conditioning, but it is a older building and again is completely free.
As a familybwe loved it, it's free, and you learn so much about natural history a gem in Iowa City for sure!
We had a great time visiting this museum and the exhibits there. There is a wide variety of displays. It's so neat to see the history of the collections there. I'd highly recommend visiting if you're in Iowa City.
Nice free Museum with lots a animals! My kids enjoyed a lot!

Saw a great show there. Nice selection of concessions. Parking is always rough downtown Iowa City. It was a hot day and the air condoning could not keep up
This is a nice live theater. Located downtown. It is on the small size. Seats definitely are. Very small bar. Saw a performance of the touring group of Second City. Like all live comedy acts it really helps if you are a bit drunk. The act was definitely geared to college students but that was fine as Iowa City is a college town.
The most extraordinary and overwhelming experience of my life was performing a table read with Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes at the Englert.
Heard Noah Reid in concert. The venue was perfect for an intimate musical experience with excellent audio. A downtown gem in Iowa City.
It's such a beautiful venue. The staff is excellent, the building is incredible! The history of this theater is very interesting, and the staff will tell you about the great community efforts to bring this place back from the ashes. We went to a concert there and had an amazing visit!
I went to the Englert Theater to participate in a fundraiser for Girls On The Run annual Luna Fest & watch some great films made by women for women. The event was awesome & the films were very inspiring, moving me to tears & joy in some cases. It was a great venue for the film festival, silent auction, and treats. They also had 2 bars for ordering beer or wine.
Excellent shows at this theater. Not a bad seat in the house. Most comfortable seats of all the little venues I've been to.
Nice little Theater. Excellent sound quality, with a capacity just under 800 it is a great place to see a show.

Q&A about Iowa City

If you don’t have locations planned for Virginia yet, I recommend Abingdon! I moved here from California a few years ago. It’s small but super cute and has lots of historic buildings and main street is nice to walk around. Lots of good places to eat and cute little shops. Wolf hills coffee is delicious and Abingdon Vineyards is lovely and has great wine! The creeper trail is a nice little nature trail to take a walk on, and there are lots of other great trails not too far from this area. The Barter theater is doing Covid safe drive-in productions which are super cute. It’s also super close to Bristol which straddles the Virginia and Tennessee state line and also has a lot of good food and drinks.
