Never been before and lived here for years. Went on Saturday around 11am. It wasn't too busy which I loved as I suffer with anxiety and being around crowds. Going into the museum your greeted with a welcome desk, a lovely little shop and a view of the museum infront of you. The staff are absolutely lovely and really helpful. Me and my partner wandered around for a couple of hours! I was shocked by how big the place was. So many interesting bits of information. I took quite a few pictures although it was hard to take some due to reflections and light. This place has a lot to offer. Very informative and fun things to look at. I read previous reviews which only gave a few stars and they are absolutely embarrasing. Someone leaving a review saying they fell down the stairs and the place is a bit run down?. What? The whole of the museum was clean and tidy and very well looked after. The toilets were tidy and clean and even the gift shop looked pleasing. A few more people did come in as time went on, but it's spacious enough to let people past without being too close. This museum really was lovely to walk around and I will definitely go back!.

The band were fantastic, very good and professional. The staff in the venue were very nice and accommodating. The vast Ganges site is now filling up with housing, the iconic mast towering over the buildings below. Every cabinet in the museum holds items of interest to anyone with Naval knowledge. A 'pusser's dirk', (seaman's knife), a bosun's call, still used on ceremonial occasions (and even for getting sailors out of bed!) and 'Blue Liners', duty-free cigarettes which you were given three special stamps to allow you to collect them each month from the NAAFI. The rum barrel reminded me that the daily 'tot' was abolished just two months before I joined the Royal Naval College Dartmouth in September 1970. The museum is extraordinary, the volunteers keen to share their memories with yours. I could have stayed for days and will return soon. A museum full of history around the base and various pieces from over the years (WW2 right to modern day), easy to spend an hour just looking around. The best part of the day though is the visit to the Hardened Air Shelter and the planes. You also drive around 2 miles to it from the Museum so get a good idea of just how big the airfield actually is as you skirt the runway and go to the far side of the operational base. The planes, wow, just wow. Where else can you get up close to a Phantom with no ropes around it and appreciate the sheer size of it. Not only that but you're welcome to jump inside the front of the cockpit and see what it would have been like flying it (cramped!). The Hunter and Meteor are fantastic too and the Scout helicopter currently being restored is a nice touch, even the cold war hangar itself is mightily impressive. The volunteers are happy to talk you through the planes and are incredibly knowledgeable, we could have spent hours there! All in all, a fantastic 2/3 hours. It's free to do but must be booked and they rely on donations to keep it going which we were more than happy to do! Thanks to all involved :)
