We didn't stay at the lodge but definitely will in the future. On our first day, we drove up from Hanmer for some sledding. The slopes were empty and our 6yo had a great time. On our second day we did some skiing and snowboarding. We also has some 1 on 1 lessons. Everyone was so friendly and so willing to help out newcomers like us. Overall, it was a great experience and we'd love to come back. Some tips from our Winter trip: The drive from Hanmer is long and unsealed. It's a beautiful drive but make sure you check the conditions before you go and always bring chains. There is no rental on the mountain (only sleds) you can hire gear from Hanmer Adventure before you go up. They also have have a shuttle up the mountain if you don't want to face the drive. There is no food or Cafe on the mountain. They have a kitchen and tea/coffee facilities which can be used. If you are having lessons, bring cash :) Mobile phone reception is patchy. On Vodafone we only had voice/txt reception. Other carriers might be better.

We tried once on our own car, but I don't recommend as it is super narrow road and 4WD required with chains on. After that used a shuttle, but it was very expensive. Honestly, there's not much to see but trees until you get to the top, but the path is well-maintained but was a bit muddy (winter weather) and provides a great workout. There's a shelter and seating to rest and take it all in. A word of advice: The Lucas Lane track is a decent 10-minute side trek to see Jacks Pass, but the main Conical Hill summit is the real showstopper and has by far the best views. It’s like science class met a magic show—except with hot chocolate, snacks, and zero school vibes. The views out in Hurunui were next level—pitch black skies, stars for days, and a telescope that basically lets you time travel. You won't find McIntyre Road on Google maps. We first went to Dog waterfall which took us 75 minutes and then to My Isobel. Our journey was all up, up, up and up. After the Dog Waterfall, the track needs repairing so be careful. There is no Toilet facilities or any DOC shelters. The track is all up and at times very steep. From the Dog Waterfall the track has loose stones which I found quite challenging especially coming down. The weather was beautiful and clear sky gave us the much needed view of Hanmer valley and ranges. There is orange markers that will quite you. I had to persevere because of the steep track, However, I made it to the top. The view is surreal and worth the effort. Coming down was good but we had to be careful because one can slide on the loose stones. We made our return to Waterfall car park in 6 hours.
