Only a public street with public spots and in the most trafficked area where it is impossible to even stop the car for a few minutes as you are right on a bus stop! No one in reception is honest or able to provide real and actual information, despite how many times we called in advance to discuss parking, arrangements and ensure a smooth arrival. Terrible! We left right after “checking-in” as we felt we were scammed - all the things we were promised were not actually real. This hotel left us with no place to stay overnight as all other hotels in the area were fully booked (and rightly so, as it was already 4pm on a Saturday!) Never again! Will avoid at all costs.

Downstairs the evening meal menu was imaginative and we were very happy with our choices - locally sourced venison with mustard mash for my husband, and a halloumi burger with fries and coleslaw for me. Lovely desserts too. We noted the Holford Arms grows what it can in its own garden, including heritage vegetables, fruit and herbs and likes to source as much as possible from the local area. I was impressed that there was oat milk sachets in the room as well as UHT milk to go with the tea and coffee supplies, and that at breakfast thought had been given to providing gluten-free cereals and vegetarian options. We did just that on arrival day, to get lunch at a pub and get to know the area, visit the church, and take some plants (with donations of course!). Theres a charming little wine shop just across the road with dessert wines. Their bags are strong enough for the walk back. The Monarchs way is a lovely walk in both directions, cows, horses, and much wildlife about. Please don’t ever feed other peoples livestock/animals, as they may be on special diets, and this is a very expensive vet bill! We wore wellies, and had no issues walking the muddy trails by day, then switching out to more formal footwear throughout the hotel for dinner/breakfast. The area is very quiet at this time of year but it feels very warm and cheerful. The hotel is very generous with their guests, breakfast included into our booking was great, and there are even winter tipples allowances that made pre-dinner time fun! We really enjoyed the other areas for sitting to read/sketch. They have nature books for browsing with interesting tidbits about the countryside ecology and history. Overall this felt like a home away from home in a beautiful area, during a quieter, but not less beautiful time. You can reach the hotel by bus from Bath central. It’s a long ride, but very scenic. We will definitely returning again, and checking out their other hotel sites as well for next year. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. Be sure to check out the art throughout the hotel, there are some lovely pieces about. P.S. Theres a pretty nice parch of land behind the hotel that was once a tennis/sports court, that has massive potential for a secret garden ;) wink wink!

It was supposed to be topped with sun-dried tomatoes, but those were replaced with plum tomatoes, which completely changed both the look and the flavour of the dish. Sun-dried tomatoes have a distinctive, strong taste—plum tomatoes just don’t compare. It was finished off with a very basic salad. In all fairness, the entrees were too notch - perfectly crisp calamari, a beautiful goats curd mousse and the highlight, a cheese and truffle souffle that was just perfection. Mains were so incredibly disappointing though. The chicken Milanese was soggy and covered in a distinct layer of oil. The burgers were pretty much on par with five guys. And there was a nondescript pasta in a simple tomato sauce (with token burrata and fried artichoke on the top) which lacked flavour. The grilled fish hadn't even been cleaned properly and still had what I believe the liver attached. It was below the standard of evenregular pub food and cost upwards of £22 each + 12.5% service. I had hoped for at least decent wine, but their by the glass collection consisted of wines with the average retail price of £11 per bottle (sold at £11 a glass). I didn't even finish my glass, it was so unappealing. There are plenty of drinkable wines at that price point - at least curate your wine list a bit better. Service was disinterested, and at the end we found some additional food items had been added to our bill. Overall, a thoroughly underwhelming experience at close to £45 per head.

I chose an Asian style starter which was tasty and then a tortellini pasta dish - it was disappointing. Very odd flavours and the 'pasta' tasted like dumplings. As a vegetarian I still eat dairy and was not catered for on the menu at all. It was either meat/fish or - vegan. An easy win would be to make pasta dish on the main menu vegetarian. When we were seated we weren't asked if we had any dietary requirements - I guess they assume everyone who eats here is a meat eater. I've not had to question a menu like this since 2000s and can feel like you're being difficult. My husband loved his roast though!
