Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Newark Castle and Gardens is a historical site featuring dungeons, Victorian gardens, and a King John exhibit. The castle gatehouse was originally built as an impressive entrance for visitors, with the bishops' quarters located here as well. The moat surrounding the castle was stilted up by the early 17th century and later re-cut during the sieges of the civil war. Despite being a small ruined castle, it holds great historic significance and offers guided tours for visitors to explore its rich history.
Lovely gardens on the banks of the Trent , superb view through the old castle windows over looking the river . Castle in a somewhat degraded condition, but offers a nice walk around the perimeter to experience the castle and its walls close up . Ideal location for a picnic during clement weather . Dog friendly ( Always pick up after your dog ). No toilets on site or refreshments. Paid Parking oppsite , which only cost £2.50 for 2-4 hours stay .

Lovely old ruins with a fascinating history. We were visiting Newark for shopping and had a wander around here when we got off the train. The gardens were laid out beautifully with flower beds full of tulips and we were lucky to have been blessed with glorious weather too.

Having visited before I would give this attraction 5 stars - however be aware that on my latest visit (August 2025) the castle and grounds are closed due to extensive renovations that could last several years!

Lovely grounds and a pretty river walk to peek at the beautiful views of the castle! The castle has a great history from the middle ages. Great for a picnic!

Enjoyed reading about the history of the castle. Beautiful situation and the nearby castle barge cafe served a delicious lunch. Dog friendly too.

Came to Newark for a 3-day Steampunk event in the Market Square. The castle is located next to the main road & canal. There is a lovely little park on the other side of the canal and its only a short walk to get into the castle grounds. Once in the castle (which is free entry) only one tower and wall is standing and you can look out of a large arch looking over the canel and park. There is a lovely grassed large grassed area that would be good in the summer for picnics etc. and a band stand. There were a few walk ways and entrances into the tower etc. but these were all locked up for some unknown reason. There was a seperate building with toilets in and parking is across the other side of the canal and is only £3.70 for thd whole day.

Newark Castle and Gardens is such a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. The castle ruins are full of history and charm, with information boards that really bring the past to life.

Such a shame we didn’t check but the castle is closed at the moment temporarily, but we could see the outside, gave us chance to have a walk around Newark, relaxing afternoon out. Cheap car park near by .

There is plenty to see at this museum. As well as the story of the Civil War there is an interesting section on Newark's history, temporary exhibitions and a historic timbered hall. Very friendly staff.

I bought a cavalry helmet from here, great condition I think it was £101 or something but it was worth every penny
Tom B — Google review
Worth a visit if your in the area and costs £8 for an adult entry. Gives an interesting insight to the English Civil War especially in the Newark area and the short videos are worth watching. The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful. There was two rooms which were empty and these could do with some displys in them.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Good exhibits. Very hands on for children. Clean toilets on site. Interesting videos about different aspects of the civil war. Great dressing up opportunities. Easy to find and short stay car park only 2 mins walk.

Fantastic museum, high volume of information and artifacts from the wars. Plenty of children's activities from colouring, to playing dress up and toys. The team are extremely friendly and have made a great effort for entertainment for all.
Dan P — Google review
Great little museum for all ages. My grandson and I have been several times. Free entry for Newark and Sherwood residents. 4 stars rather than 5 because several of the interactive tables weren't working - given that its the school holidays they really were essential to young people getting the most out of the visit. Even the 20 min cinema show was shut ! Always clean and we'll displayed, history is well explained. Generally there's a separate display upstairs. Toilet facilities great. Cafe in the same building, as well as visitor information displays , children's activities often on. Parking nearby (car park fees).

Newark Castle- very impressed but a little disappointed that only the one main wall remains.Must have been quite something in its day.Set on the bank of the river Trent,it’s beautiful surrounding amplifies the castle wall.Still,it’s a lovely walk around.

Lovely old station. Has basic services and is with few hundred yards of the Market town of Newark. Also Newark castle a few minutes walk. River is a few hundred yards away and parking is good for those wanting to visit Castle. Waitrose next door and petrol station

Lovely gardens and walkways, with a bandstand in the centre of the gardens, plenty of seating, a good place for families to sit and enjoy a picnic together or take out from local cafés. Anglican church
Sights & Landmarks
Churches & Cathedrals
Nestled beside the bustling marketplace of Newark-on-Trent, St Mary Magdalene Church stands as a stunning example of medieval architecture. This impressive parish church boasts a striking octagonal spire that dates back to around 1220, making it one of the largest and most remarkable churches in England. A fascinating feature is the musket ball hole in its spire, a remnant from the tumultuous Civil War era when it served as a lookout point during fierce battles.
A beautiful and historic church full of interesting features inside, but the presence of numerous buckets collecting leaked water, was evidence of why it is shortly to close for extensive repairs to be made.
Simon R — Google review
Highly recommend a visit for pray or coffee tea cake ,listen to music or just to sit and think or any event the church holds etc or like me today tower tour wow speechless what a privilege Rita tour guide amazing I learnt more history an honour to have buildings like this so near x highly recommend x cheers nicki t volunteers all so kind well done x
Nicola T — Google review
A glorious large church that sits in the centre of town. Well kept gardens, and I hear that it's beautiful inside. Currently a service on when I visited so I didnt want to interrupt, but its quite a large church , you cannot miss it !!
R J — Google review
A really magnificent Gothic/Romanesque church. It was built in 12 Century but pieces were added up to the 15th Century. Restoration in the 19th century changed some aspects of the building but does not diminish its brilliance. It is cathedral-like in its size and decoration but is "only" a parish church. Well worth a visit. With plenty to explore and photograph. The tower is currently closed to the public but there is still plenty to see.
Martin M — Google review
What a wonderful gem in the middle of Newark. No matter where you are in the town, you can't get lost as you just have to look up to see the iconic spire. This church houses some wonderful examples of medieval stained glass and is well worth a visit. Throughout the year, they host different events. Please don't forget to leave donations if you visit as the church is raising funds to repair their roof.
M P — Google review
Magnificent parish church with spectacular interior Free entry but easy debit card 'tap' donations if you wish, on entry Apparently, running costs are about £1500 a DAY! Well worth a visit
S T — Google review
This is a magnificent church. A minor Cathedral in proportions. With one of the very tallest spires in England. Set behind the spacious Georgian Market square (south of the church) with large gardens to the north. Present vicar, David, delivers interesting sermons that may challenge 'pedestrian'-churchgoers.And why not? Strong and competent choir, large set of bells rung regularly. A gem of a building in this riverside town known traditionally as the Gate to the North.
Peter W — Google review
This is a HUGE building. Great historically but pretty hard to worship in I would think. The links with the English Civil War are many, significant and interesting.

Art Museums
The Town Hall Museum & Art Gallery houses a historical collection of local finds, including Roman pottery and many Civil War relics, as well as art from the past and present. It is located in Newark's historic Town Hall building.
This small museum, in the exceptionally fine Georgian Town Hall, is well worth a visit (and free!), with a fascinating collection of the town's history and an interesting art collection, especially featuring the Nicholson family. The volunteer guide who showed me the superb Assembly Room was most friendly and helpful.

I'm glad we are able to visit on a Saturday. The ladies on duty were helpful, lovely, friendly, and welcoming during our visit! The art and collections are beautifully displayed and have lots of information available. The restored ballroom is very beautifully done, and they can host regular events in this historical building.

My first visit. Amazing museum for free. Beautiful ballroom. & the smallest house in the uk Such lovely staff. Some parts can’t photograph due to artifacts. But otherwise well worth a visit- five star
Sue A — Google review
What a gem. On the first floor (you need to ask to see it) there is an absolutely stunning ballroom. I had no idea and was not expecting anything so magnificent. Designed by John Carr and built in 1776. It has the mayoral offices and the "tiny house". The guide was so friendly and knowledgeable. Gilded columns, "wedgewood" plasterwork and original colouring - restored in the 1980s. Available to hire - stunning!!! In the attached museum and art gallery see the proclamation chair - and various paraphernalia of the town council. Art displayed from many wonderful artists including William Nicholson and William Caparne.
Martin M — Google review
Rather disappointed by Newark as a whole. Interesting castle - shut. Interesting church - shut. Town hall and museum - shut. Despite Monday being one of the market days, many stores were shut. Don’t you realise people visit an all days of the week and may well come for the market. If you’re not open, you’re not making money
Ian S — Google review
A lovely museum in the centre of Newark, expertly guided by Terry who explained about the Proclamation stool and took us to the grand ballroom, the council chambers and the Lord mayors parlour which has fabulous pieces on display including the Maces and Siege Pieces.
Barry B — Google review
Not the largest but something of an undiscovered gem. We had only gone In to check out the William Nicholson pictures, but the guide ended up giving us a tour of the whole building including the lovely refurbished ballroom and the mayor's regalia room and the narrowest house in Newark. Lots of local artists, and a great view of the Market Place Check it out cos it's all free!

Free tours of the museum and chambers. Both of our guides were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I would recommend going If you have 1.5hrs spare. Also the ball room is huge and the decor looks amazing.

Indian restaurant
Koinonia South Indian Restaurant is a delightful gem nestled in the heart of Newark, where the vibrant flavors of Southern India come alive. This easygoing eatery specializes in vegetarian dishes, offering an enticing array from crispy dosas to rich curries that transport your taste buds straight to Kerala. Open seven days a week for both dine-in and takeout, Koinonia has become a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike.
Great little Indian restaurant. We went as a group of friends one evening as a catch up. I had the Biryani and was so good. Tasty, large chunks of chicken and the accompanying curry was so tasty. I had the fish starter special, again really nice and would suggest it's a little like the inside of a good quality fishcake without the batter. Great service, swift and attentive. My friends has the butter chicken and chicken mehini (spelling) special. Lots of empty plates and satisfied smiles.

I had the veg thali, people I was with had a fish molee and vegetable stew. We all found our food extremely tasty. The thali was banging! Service was brilliant, the waiting staff were attentive and very helpful with all our questions about the food. I would definitely recommend eating here if you are in Newark. Some of the best South Indian food I’ve had. Thanks for an ace meal ☺️
Sarah L — Google review
I know I've said this before but hands down the best curry I've ever had! And I have a few 😂 I didn't recognise any of the dishes on the menu so took me a while to order as it all sounded so good. In the end with the help of the waiter I went for grandmas lamb curry with mushroom rice, some potato side and the flat bread. When the bread came, I looked at thinking I'm not going to enjoy that. Not my normal, Oh my god was I wrong. Amazing I would give it 10 stars if I could.
Paul S — Google review
This was our first visit to the Koinonia, we just called on the off chance as it was our anniversary. We didn’t expect much atmosphere on a Sunday teatime, though that didn’t spoil the experience at all. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, the service was outstanding! We were not rushed, they left perfect timing between starters and mains, then even asked if we were ready for our mains, just perfect! The presentation of our starters ( the Mala Kozhi fry which was spicy and succulent and the Spinach and Onion Vada which had a nice crisp finish with not a bit of grease in sight!) was beautiful, very tasty too. Our mains of grandmothers lamb curry and the Peralan chicken curry were both enjoyable. Our only minor disappointment was the side order of rice with dried fruits and nuts. We did expect them to be at least a handful mixed in with the rice, but instead there were just a tiny few sprinkled on top of the dish. This was more of a minor observation, a preference rather than a complaint! The portion sizes were just right, the prices seemed a little on the high side but then the food was of quality so to be expected. Our visit was made all the more enjoyable by the relaxed friendly manner of the team, well done Koinonia! You are doing a great job and we will be back! Thank you to all, Angie and Andy 💖

We were looking for authentic Kerala cuisine and we were very pleased with the choice we made... Located in Newark Town centre, there is parking available at NCP car park nearby or in the ASDA car park across the road. The ambience was good and the staff, very friendly. The menu offered a good spread of authentic Kerala cuisine. The food was excellent, which matched the excellent service. Overall, it was a great dining experience! We will definitely be visiting again...

The Bromley at Fiskerton is a charming pub located in the small settlement of Fiskerton-cum-Morton, situated along the picturesque banks of the River Trent. The establishment has garnered praise for its special community spirit and lovely atmosphere, particularly when the sun is shining. Guests can enjoy dining or sipping drinks next to the river while watching boats pass by. While some find the prices slightly higher, they appreciate the quality and presentation of the food.
I wanted a venue that could cater for 60+ people to host my Uncle's Wake, and the staff at The Bromley rose to the occasion wonderfully. Gemma, the Manager, deserves a very special mention as she was truly outstanding Their organisation was superb, the food was lovely (well done, Louis), the service was warm and always attentive (thank you, Becky) - nothing was too much trouble for them. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the occasion even though it had a somber tone. I can not praise The Bromley highly enough and have no hesitation in recommending it others, and we will certain be returning in the near future Thank you, The Bromley staff - you have done us and my late Uncle proud !!

Visited last weekend while camping down the road. Amazing Staff all so friendly and happy, very refreshing. Had drinks and a bowl of chips all which were lovely. What a fantastic location too by the river. Only improvement I could recommend would be the lighting in the ladies loo's it was a bit dark. Will definitely be back in the future for food as what was coming out to other tables looked really good.

Friendly service, good food. Ordered 2 lots of 3x small plates for £22 which were delicious apart from the crab fish cakes which I won't be having again. Also £5 for a small bowl of fries is a bit cheeky. Looks a bit tired, needs new windows or some tlc

This review has been edited.......Summer 2025, the food is amazing! Would definitely recommend. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the pub itself is in a lovely location, right by the river. We ordered drinks to be told they had run out of ice! Not a great sign! Unfortunately, the food was very substandard, it just didn't seem fresh! I wouldn't return for food in a hurry but would for a quick drink by the river in the sun, hopefully with ice next time!

This is one of my favourite places to come when it’s warm and the sun is shining? It was busy but service was good. We had baguettes which came with a salad and a choice of fries or hand cut chips. I was pleasantly surprised at the price £8.50 as the baguette was large and the chips were a generous portion.

Was nothing like previous owners, place was run down was no table service no alcohol free wines and tables were sticky. Roman Way Beefeater is a trendy pub that offers a variety of classic international dishes, grill options, and burgers. Their 8oz fillet steaks are among the most delectable cuts available, aged for at least 30 days to enhance their flavor. These steaks are expertly grilled and served with chunky triple cooked chips, crispy flat mushroom, juicy grilled tomatoes, and peppercorn sauce.
Excellent service from Rich who sold us on the desserts that made for a great end to our meal. Steaks were good as you'd expect and my wife enjoyed the sea bass main. We we there till nearly 10pm with no pressure to leave. Yes they had to lay up tables for breakfast and judging from the car park the hotel was full. But that didn't detract from our experience. All the staff were helpful and friendly. Update from 2nd visit: fillet steak was very good and the Diane sauce was amazing. Wife enjoyed her lasagne.

We went to Beefeater on Sunday last week. I have never been in Beefeater before in my life . Service was good, staff was friendly, but the food wasn't the greatest 😕 I ordered the 74 mixed plater, but the quality of the ribs was dreadful, which made me feel like I was having Tesco ribs , the chiken brest was very dry I thought quality on meet would be higher standard my Mrs had her vegan Burger she said it was okey nothing exciting, & my daughter Ten VEG PAST well she is 2 yewrs old so not much of a comment on that I forgot to take picture of the starter but nut much of a different we had breaded mushrooms the where very tiny mushrooms very watery possibly frozen mushrooms , we had potato dippers which basically was potato wedge & mozzarella on top.

Very interesting castle but due to our disabilities we were unable to do the full tour and restricted ourselves to the cafe and shop. Staff were friendly and polite. Would recommend.

We visited this restaurant to celebrate my husband’s birthday with our family. We had a reservation for 12 people, later updated to 14. A few guests arrived about 10 minutes early and were told the table wasn’t ready yet. It wasn’t a warm welcome and the atmosphere from the staff felt far from friendly. It was very difficult to get two additional chairs and space for the extra guests, despite the update in the booking. The manager eventually brought a chair over, but did so with clear displeasure, practically throwing it at the table. To make matters worse, two guests who ordered later than the rest were served their meals much earlier. We waited a long time and couldn’t eat together as a group. My salmon was absolutely awful – completely inedible and definitely not worth the price. No one came to check if everything was okay and after we were served, we were left completely on our own. No one returned to our table, no one cleared anything. We were simply ignored! We left feeling extremely disappointed. What was supposed to be a joyful birthday celebration ended up being frustrating and upsetting. This place completely ruined the mood. I absolutely do not recommend it.

1st time and won't be the last. Made very welcome. One of our party in a wheelchair with no access problems. On a very hot day aircon was lovely and not too cold. Our waitress was so lovely. The food was served fairly quickly (considering the variety we ordered) quality 100% best steak I've ever had. We were celebrating our late mum's birthday and experienced everything she would've loved. Already made plans to return

Horrid food super dry burgers people on our table got food after 10 minutes the rest of us had to wait an extra hour, then the food came and it was poor quality, very dry burgers and awful coleslaw, lasagna was disgusting, salad was overly salted garlic bread was rock hard. Surroundings were loud and had people screaming while eating. Forgot about our reservation awful service.
Kyle K — Google review
Attended with a small group of friends on a Wednesday tea time. Wasn't very busy. Service was friendly and quick. Food is standard pub chain restaurant quality and value. I'm yet to find one of these chains that can cook prawns and scallops correctly without turning them to rubber. I ordered my steak medium rare and it was closer to medium/well done. The rest of the food was good though, with a nice black forest Sundae to top it all off. You get what you pay for in these type of restaurants and overall its good value. Access is good and parking available right outside the door. The local McDonald's next door does get busy and blocks the access road with drive thru patrons, but it's not a massive inconvenience to wait a few minutes.

100% will not be returning. I was looking forward to having a meal out with my family but sadly its wasn't a good experience. Service was slow like it normally is, the food was not one bit good or tasty. In my partners burger was the stub from a lettuce and the chips was very well done. My burger, well there wasn't anything good about it, only thing good on my plate was my chips. my daughters steak was just a chunk of fatty meat. When told the manager, all they said was "that wasn't good, il pass it on to the kitchen"

Nepalese restaurant
The Everest Inn is a Nepalese restaurant that is popular for its variety of dishes and elegant feel. The staff are excellent, and the quality of food is also good. Some minor disappointments include the lack of variety in beers, and the fact that some dishes can be ordered as part of starters but are then served as main courses. The toilets are generally clean, but it can get busy depending on location.
Found this fabulous restaurant during & overnight stay in Newark & we struck gold. The venue is lovely, the food was absolutely delicious & the service excellent 👍 One of the best meals we've had, Dev the chef took the time to come to our table & talk through the menu & make recommendations based upon what we liked. Everything is competitively priced & great value, if you're in the area & like Nepalese / Indian food then you'd be mad not to try this place, you won't be disappointed!!

We had an amazing first experience at this restaurant. The chef came out to personally greet us and take our order which was a nice touch. The clay oven baked trout was so full of flavour. All 4 of us thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the price was very reasonable. I would drive 2.5 hours just to eat here then drive all the way home again!

What can I say about the Baseri Nepalese & Indian Restaurant. From the immaculate service, warming manner of its staff and the carefully curated traditional cuisine it really is the most quintessential Nepalese experience to grace the Newark & Sherwood District and Greater Nottinghamshire as a whole. If you are a person of culture. Look no further! 10/10 would recommend.

This place is a hidden gem in Newark. The food was extremely good and every dish was bursting with flavor. The service was top-notch too, everyone was extremely friendly and very welcoming. As a Nepalese living in the UK, it is very hard to find a restaurant which serves authentic Nepalese cuisine and Baseri surprised me with their large selection of Nepalese food. I felt right at home from the moment we walked in. Chef Dev even gave us some complimentary pulao rice during our first visit, and they prepared jhol momo specifically as per our taste. He also prepared a potato dish for me which immediately reminded of food cooked by my mother in Nepal. The Keema Naan is top-notch! I definitely recommend checking this spot out if you're looking for a great Nepalese and Indian meal. Baseri is our new favourite restaurant in Newark and we'll be back for sure! Five stars all around.

Went for a Sunday lunch with my husband and in-laws. What a fabulous treat. We were greeted with a beautiful smile and taken to our table, drinks order taken and they arrived with our warm popadoms and pickles - what a great start. Order taken for our starters and mains again with a smile. Every single staff member that we encountered were so professional, polite and above all had a smile. The food arrived and was beautifully presented, tasted amazing and didn’t disappoint. Great menu that will suit every taste, cocktails were also top notch and reasonable prices. Portions were large but not a problem because they ask if you want to take your leftovers away and provide you with pots and a bag so no waste. Fantastic experience and we enjoyed everything about it. Highly recommend and we will definitely be back.

Café Rouge is a chain bistro that offers classic French dishes in a retro Parisian ambiance. Visitors have enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere and delicious afternoon tea at this lovely café. The service was quick and efficient, with a variety of tasty options such as calamari, seabass, soup, garlic mushrooms, steak, and mussels. The quality of teas, coffees, and snacks surpassed expectations.
Café Rouge quickly became our favourite restaurant on the park after breakfast there on our first morning. The service was very professional and welcoming! The menu is not the most extensive, but the quality of all of the meals we had still made it hard to choose what to order. Can't wait to return!

Lovely afternoon tea experience. Went with my mum & auntie (we all had the 'traditional' afternoon tea), and my nanna had croque monsieur on it's own. The food was all lovely - especially the cakes! Our favourite was the little jam donut. The waitress even brought my nanna a little pot of hot milk to add to her latte so it wasn't too strong! Much appreciated. Staff were all lovely and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you!

Lovely meal, generally great food and amazing server - Isla going above and beyond. Only criticism- prawns starter, the actual prawns were lovely but the sauce they came in was exactly the same as the lemon water you rinse your hands in, they’d be much better without it.

We went in the evening during our stay. Staff we lovely and service was quick but we weren't overly impressed with the over priced food. It was very loud, its lovely they have a little soft play for the kids (just soft padded shapes to play on) but it was just constant screaming, even though we went with our young children even they found it too much and another family asked to move due to the noise. Can't say I'd go again unfortunately

We had our evening meal at Cafe Rouge today. All our party enjoyed their food but I would like mention how amazing the service from Rachel was. The one year old in our party has several allergies and after reviewing the menu unfortunately there was nothing suitable, Rachel spoke with the chef and they were able to create a meal. We were extremely grateful and want to say how much we appreciated this.

Stevie was such a fantastic host. Couldn’t do enough for us celebrating our wedding anniversary. The food was tasty and beautifully presented. Also good value for money.

Food was delicious for all the family. The chef Rich made an exceptional effort to be inclusive to my vegan diet and the server Rachel was very friendly and made us feel welcome. Would definitely recommend this place and we aim to come back again
