Liberation Hall, also known as Befreiungshalle, is a grand monument situated on Michelsberg hill. It was commissioned by King Ludwig to honor the victories in battles against the French during the Wars of Liberation from 1813 to 1815. Constructed with local limestone, this monumental temple features allegories of Germanic tribes.
On our winter road trip to Berlin, we made a delightful stop in Kelheim! Despite the chilly December day and gentle snowfall, the exterior of the Liberation Hall took our breath away. Its impressive size and beautifully sculptured walls were truly captivating. We have very peaceful moments while admiring the structure. A perfect little gem to explore on the way! ❄️🏛️❤️

This building is inside really huge! Really nice view outside and stunning inside! If you have chance, visit this place! Near parking is great and is ready for any size of car. Nice clean toilets. Nice view from the bistro.

It's lovely inside, but mainly it is in German. So I could only use Google translate and also read up online to understand it. The walk up to the top of the dome is a very narrow stairs but the view up in the dome is superb. Giving a 4 stars, cos I couldn't understand German.

This place is impressive. It’s a gigantic hall where you feel like a tiny person. The main hall was spectacular and huge. I’ve never seen something this big before. It was a bit scary to feel so little. You can also climb at the top to get a view over the horizons. The climb isn’t easy and the stairs are narrow but it is worth it for the view. The park around the monument is also pleasant to have a walk. It’s quiet and peaceful.

Wonderful architecture and views from the top. Restaurant next to the ticket office. It wasn't crowded and if you take your own food/drinks you can have a picnic and enjoy the sun.
Daisy A — Google review
A great place to visit, even though it doesn’t feature any special exhibitions or temporary displays. The surrounding area is very attractive. However, we were disappointed to find that both of the shortest walking routes to the Danube River were closed, without any clear reason.

Really cool monument. Typical of mid 19th century early German nationalism. Great views of the Danube.
Patrick F — Google review
This place can be a lot of work to get to if you park at the bottom however it felt great making it all the way to the top! Lucky for me the rain held off and was a good hike. Inside the liberation hall which you have to pay to enter just go to the visitor center. But it has some gorgeous views from the top! Definitely a must! Lots of history marked in here.

A beautiful city gate from the 14th century and with a fresco
Benseer M — Google review
The Mittertor is one of Kelheim’s three medieval city gates, originally constructed in the 13th century as part of the town’s fortifications. This defensive tower once featured a saddle-shaped roof; in the early 19th century it was rebuilt with a tent-style roof, similar to those on the other gates. A striking feature of the Mittertor is the fresco painted on the inner side of the tower in 1904 by Georg Lickleder. It commemorates local butcher Matthias Kraus, who led a revolt against Austrian occupiers on December 12, 1705. The original painting is now preserved in the Bavarian National Museum in Munich.

Hotel
Nestled in the picturesque old town of Kelheim, Gasthof Weißes Lamm is a charming inn housed in a historic building dating back to the 1890s. This family-run establishment has been serving guests for generations and offers simple yet comfortable accommodations along with a complimentary breakfast. The highlight here is undoubtedly the Bavarian restaurant, where food enthusiasts can indulge in traditional dishes crafted from homemade, regional ingredients that celebrate seasonal flavors.
There were four of us on a cycling holiday. The hotel has safe storage in a large garage. This was well used by the many cycling guests. We stayed in a recently renovate block which was smart, modern and in good condition. We spent two nights. We ate in the hotel restaurant and enjoyed good traditional German food. The restaurant is closed Sunday evening and we went out to one of the local restaurants instead. The staff were friendly and helpful.

We visited the restaurant part of this hotel & restaurant place as part of a group of about 30 people. Service was quick in taking up the orders - and friendly. The ordered food didn't take a long time to get prepared and arrived hot on the table. The Cordon Bleu that we had was pretty good, the fries were a bit dry but generally okay as a side dish. In addition to the small pack of Ketchup you could also get more Ketchup/Mayonnaise upon request. Prices were very reasonable. Location wise, the place is in the old town of Kelheim and only a short walk away from the big parking lot at the boat dock where we had arrived by boat. For summer, there is spacious outside seating with plenty of sunshades or glass roofs. Bathrooms were clean and equipped with the typical amenities. Generally, this was quite decent for our lunch and there was not a lot to complain about.

(Translated by Google) Bavaria had been our springboard to Italy until then. A five-day visit to Kehlheim was supposed to change that. As we often do, we were looking for a restaurant away from the hustle and bustle. And we found the Gasthaus Stockhammer. We ended up going there four evenings in a row, and we experienced firsthand how a family business apparently survives several generations. The boss – an approachable older lady – was recognizable within seconds. She still had a habit of asking each table if everything was as it should be. She made her rounds, and if they were locals, a conversation at the table would last for minutes. Even we, at the kids' table right next to the bar, like an eagle's nest with the necessary overview, were able to gain her attention, and a brief, lively exchange ensued. The meal was – and this was her pride and joy – cooked by her son, who had already worked at fine restaurants. And this was immediately apparent from the first dish. In short: regional cuisine, but decorated like an initial on a witty text. Solid, tasty, no overflowing plates, full of ideas and pizzazz. A fine knife! The chef not only knows the ingredients, he mixes them together with culinary skill. The two waitresses filled the room with calm and serenity, avoiding the dreadful, hectic movements, even though it was rather busy. They always had a cheerful eye and the necessary composure. We enjoyed it very much, especially at the kids' table, and we'll be back next year.

(Translated by Google) We went there for dinner and were lucky to get a table. The senior chef kindly asked if we could sit down. Conversation beforehand was very much appreciated. The meal itself was fantastic. The best, because it was a real Wiener Schnitzel (not just any old style!!), I've ever had. My wife had asparagus with char and a !homemade! hollandaise sauce to smother it in. For dessert, we had a delicious Bavarian cream. We were so hungry, we unfortunately forgot to take pictures. The prices are reasonable for the quality, portions, and, above all, the taste. If we're ever in Kelheim again, we'll eat there. We didn't have a reservation, but I would definitely recommend it.

Bavarian restaurant
Weisses Bräuhaus Kelheim is a historic microbrewery and restaurant known for producing Bavarian wheat beer since the 17th century. The vaulted ceilings and leafy patio create a charming atmosphere for enjoying hearty Bavarian cuisine and their famous brews. The friendly and attentive staff ensure a pleasant dining experience, while the barrierefrei facilities make it accessible to all guests. Diners can savor exquisite dishes, such as trout with vegetables, served by the accommodating service team.
As it says on the restaurant's official website, "The Weisses Bräuhaus in Kelheim is the oldest wheat beer brewery in Bavaria. Weissbier has been brewed in the historic vaults of the Weisses Bräuhaus since the beginning of the 17th century." This was not the reason why I stopped to eat here, but simply hunger. I ordered trout with vegetables and it was an inspired choice. It was one of the best cooked trout portas I have eaten (and I eat fish whenever possible). The vegetables contributed decisively to the success of this dish: incredibly good, full of taste, authentic! I can only appreciate this food with maximum points. Then I had an Apfelstrudel, also very tasty. It must be said that the staff, the waitresses, were very kind, present, attentive. The summer garden is spacious, roomy, a relaxing and pleasant space. Finally, the prices are decent.
Daniel W — Google review
We visited Weisses Bräuhaus for lunch and had an absolutely fantastic experience. This place is not only a restaurant but also the oldest Weissbier brewery in Bavaria, with roots dating back to 1607, which adds an extra charm to the visit. We sat in the cozy beer garden, but I also peeked inside and was impressed by the stunning historical interior with its vaulted ceilings and authentic Bavarian atmosphere. The service was excellent – the staff, dressed in traditional costumes, were both professional and welcoming. The food was outstanding: the veal liver was probably the best I’ve ever had, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The pork knuckle was just as impressive, with crispy skin and juicy, tender meat, while the chicken in lemon sauce was fresh and perfectly balanced. Weisses Bräuhaus combines unique history, authentic atmosphere, top-quality Bavarian cuisine, and its own famous Weissbier – a place I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone visiting Kelheim.

Avoid this place! The owner treated us extremely impolitely and unprofessionally, they only accept cash, they have nothing of what is in the menu, the menu is not in English, the food (what they have, because they had 3 up to 7 options we asked for) is soooo mediocre! A nightmare! When we asked to speak with the manager as we did not have cash and nobody informed us in advance,he refused to talk and send a waiter (she was really kind,at last!)to let us know he didn't have time. Then we went to pay and he was there, telling me that in Italy nobody speaks German with him!But we asked a menu in English and TAP water, they served water that made us pay and again nobody told us about the payment cash only. It's a shame!!Never more!! Learn how to treat your customers!! And you lost 20+ customers as tomorrow we were supposed to come here with our tour group!!🤣

The hotel situated above Café am Donautor offers spacious accommodations with a pleasant outlook. The complimentary breakfast is exceptional, although guests suggest the inclusion of (sparkling) water as a healthier alternative to orange juice. Many patrons visit primarily for this meal. Nice hotel in a good location in very likeable small-town Kelheim. Excellent parking. Spacious clean rooms, nice showers, separate toilet. Even a small fridge. I'd give it 4.5 stars for the absence of a kettle in the room which would be much appreciated. Nice soccer tables near reception, but we couldn't find balls so couldn't have a go.
Karl R — Google review
I stayed there for 3 nights in July. Unfortunately I received the worst service from the receptionist ever. We we checked-in, we found one female socks under the table, I went to the reception and reported that very politely to a guy at reception, and all he said was: "OK". I said probably the cleaning staff didn't probably clean properly, and he said: "Yes, Maybe" and didn't even look at me while he was typing something in his computer. I waited for him to ask me the room number, and since he didn't ask, I told him: "Do you want to know the room number?" He just said: "OK, yeah" ... It was very strange behaviour, I understand these things may happen in hotels but he didn't even apologised.for that.. I still think he (or the hotel) owe me an apology ... I don't recommend this hotel if you expect a civilised behaviour from the receptionists...
Farshad — Google review
If your coming from road that's parallel to the Danube River. Once you're approaching the clock tower with arch, stop and dont pass through the arch. Make a left instead. That's where the reception is. I want to take the male housekeeper who helped me with the steps to get our stroller through the hallway. Although I wish the frontdesk would've assigned us to the room that won't pass the steps or hallway that has ramp for more accessibility. Awesome fridge with drinks. Beddings are good. I have the view of downtown Kelheim. My room was pleasant. Toilet and shower are separate. I like their floor and rainfall shower head. The over all vibe remind me of hot topic store in US. They have courtyard with fountain. The breakfast area is near elevator that's close to front of Building. It is also 3 minute walk from reception desk to bus stop. It is 5 minute walk to tourist information desk.
