Kitzbuhel

Kitzbühel is a small Alpine town east of Innsbruck, in the western Austrian province of Tyrol. It's a fashionable winter resort, known for the annual Hahnenkamm downhill race. Upscale shops and cafes line the streets of its medieval center. Museum Kitzbühel chronicles the history of the town and the area’s winter sports, with paintings by local artist Alfons Walde. Its rooftop terrace has sweeping town views.

Mountain peak
Kitzbüheler Horn, a 1,996-meter mountain in Austria, is a popular destination for both winter and summer activities. The area offers cable cars, gondola lifts, skiing, hiking trails, and an alpine garden. Kitzbuhel is known as one of the largest and most renowned winter sports resorts in Austria. It has a rich history dating back to the 16th century when it prospered due to its copper and silver mines.
The Kitzbüheler Horn (also spelt Kitzbühler Horn) is one of the most important mountains in the Kitzbühel Alps in Tyrol, Austria, whose eastern flank lies near the smart ski resort of Kitzbühel. With a height of 1,996 m (AA) it only just misses being a 'two-thousander'. At the summit is a 102 metre high TV tower belonging to the ORF and known as the Kitzbüheler Horn Transmission Tower (Sendeturm Kitzbüheler Horn). The Harschbichl (1,604 m) is a sub-peak to the north which is also accessible. The mountain has several cable cars and gondola lifts and there is a panoramic toll road from Kitzbühel. There are also several mountain inns on its slopes. The so-called Alpenhaus (1,670 m (AA), 47°28′01″N 12°25′45″E) was in recent years the finish of the King Stage (Königsetappe) of the Tour of Austria cycle race. An Alpine flower garden (Alpenblumengarten) has been laid out at a height of 1800 m which, despite its name, has mountain plants from all over the world. Every year in August the International Kitzbühler Horn Race takes place. The route runs along the 7.4 km long toll road to the Alpenhaus. Its maximum incline in the closing stages is 22.4%. The record time to the Alpenhaus is held by Beat Bräu who completed the race in a time of 29:11 minutes. Numerous lifts have been built to support winter sports in the ski region of the same name. On the side facing St. Johann there is a mountain cart route. There is a small mountain lake level with the half-way station on the cable car from the village. Both peaks are heavily frequented, not just by hikers, but also by mountain bikers due to its good paths.

Beautiful view. But it is not necessary to go all the way up to the top of the mountain with a car.
Z. G — Google review
The best place to experience amazing views all around. And if you are doing skiing this is a very famous ski hotspot as well. You can take the cable car and easily reach the top. Or you can take hiking trails from the middle station of the cable car to the top as well. View from the top are absolutely breathtaking.
Ishanka H — Google review
Took me 90 minutes to run on top of it. Great mountain!
Łukasz B — Google review
Absolutely beautiful. Been thereid august, end of afternoon, alone with the wind and the cows and their ringing bells. It was magic. Alors a special climbing space for kids that must be tried !
Nicolas B — Google review
This is the highest point in the Kitzbühel area which can be reached by cable car. I took a cable car from Kitzbühel and a second one from the intermediate station at Pletzeralm. In total the cost was 29 Euros, less a 15% discount for over 65's on a Tuesday. I loved the gondola rides and the views. The hotel on the top was closed when I visited, else I would have stayed even longer.
Ian Y — Google review
Located at an altitude of 1,998 meters, Kitzbuheler Horn in the Tyrol region is one of the most beautiful peaks of the mountains in Austria. This peak can be accessed via a cableway through Pletzeralm or you can climb from the Kitzbuhel countryside. The peak has a very beautiful view. South of Kitzbuheler there is a 1,772-meter Hornkopfli peak which can also be reached by a cableway. In addition to the beautiful scenery, at its peak we will find Gipfelhaus, a unique mountain peak house, with a chapel, a restaurant, and an Alpine garden. During the ski season, the mountains are full of skiers from all over the world.

Beautiful road bike climb, only 7.1km (well marked along the road) .. one of the steepest in Austria… get ready for some suffering to the top, but it is worth it!

Specialty Museums
The Museum Kitzbühel, also known as the Museum der Stadt Kitzbühel, is housed in two of the city's oldest historic buildings and offers a fascinating journey through the history and culture of Kitzbühel. The collection includes paintings, exhibits, film installations, and audio presentations that showcase the town's evolution from Bronze Age mining to its prominence as a hub for winter sports.
This is a nice museum. Average entry fee (€17) and while it isn't a big place, it's well worth a tour. The staff speak excellent English, and are very helpful.
Julian H — Google review
A great museum documenting the history of the city and its influence on skiing. Well done exhibits with interesting variety of artifacts. Highly recommend to visit while getting in a ski visit. Staff is incredibly welcoming - we could have done an audio tour but the signage had English language as well.
Korryn M — Google review
great museum on kb history and mainly Walde art and collection. nice building, beautiful made.
Ulle — Google review
January 2022, Superb museum / gallery exhibiting the work of the Austrian Artist Alfons Walde. There is also an independent history of the town of Kitzbuhel and the development of Alpine Skiing. Well worth a visit. June 2022, still worth a repeat visit to see again the ever inspiring work of Alfons Walde.
Patrick M — Google review
Small but interesting collection, must visit for Alfons Walde fans
Olivia Z — Google review
Can’t honestly recommend this museum. It is quite small and doesn’t really do a good job of explaining Kitzbuhel’s history or relevance to anyone who’s not from here. Think of the 6.50 charge as a contribution to the town’s upkeep.
J. G — Google review
An excellent museum with lots of interesting exhibits and information about the local area and its history. The paintings were especially good. The one downside is that there are no toilets in the museum. It costs 7 euros to enter.
Scott P — Google review
Fine local museum with changing exhibitions. Several floors, mainly regional works and exhibits. Currently, 2.9.2018 an excellent display of Tyrolean paintings by Walde, well worth seeing.

Bodies of Water
Schwarzsee, a charming mountain lake just three kilometers northwest of Kitzbuhel, offers a serene escape with its dark green waters and mineral-rich setting. Visitors can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and fishing for carp and pike in the picturesque surroundings. The lake is also perfect for people-powered boating activities like canoeing and kayaking.
This thermal lake has a temperature of between 21°C & 27°C. There are changing rooms and showers for swimmers, as well as a water slide and a diving board. If you don't fancy swimming, there is a lovely 2.5 km walk around the lake, with plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the view. There are various places where you can eat and drink. Other hiking routes diverge away from the lake, so your walk can be as long, or as short as you like. It is about a 30 minute walk from the centre of Kitzbühel.

Beautiful thermal lake. Plenty of hiking and hiking, swimming and running routes. A walk around will reward you with a bit of the forest. You will also see a lot of artwork and info on the environment along the way. Highly recommended.

A beautiful black lake with huge fish, don't know whether they are carp or pike. Surrounded by huge mountains and very cute alpen lodges. There are kids water slides, the adults can just jump into the water from the many jetties. Serviced by cafes which offer a variety of food and drink. This place gets very busy when the sun is out and extremely popular for sunbathing. Not to far from kitzbuhel and I would recommend the shortcut through the town, very well signposted

Absolutely worth the walk from town to come and experience this awesome view with the lake and mountains in the background. We’ll worth it to visit one of the café‘s or restaurants or even for sunbathing. A walk around will reward you with a bit of the forest. Nestled in the Austrian Alps, Wildpark Aurach in Kitzbuhel offers a picturesque setting for animal lovers. Situated at an elevation of 1,100 meters, the park is home to over 200 animals including deer, peacocks, lynx, yaks and monkeys within a game enclosure. Visitors can stroll among the freely roaming animals or opt for a horse-drawn carriage ride.
Amazing place where they keep the balance between nature and humans as good as possible. Animals have access to natural resources of water, to places where they can chill without being bothered. The views from all the different places on the route are amazing, it gives you a small and easy impression on all of Austria. The few negative reviews abt this place testify mostly to the fact that humans have lost their touch with nature. I come from the Veluwe, another place in Europe where deers are still living in nature. But I never could connect with them better then here in Austria. I'm so blessed to have been here. Thanks and love from the Netherlands 🙌💚

A beautifully maintained wildlife park nestled in nature, perfect for spending 2-3 hours with children. Enjoy leisurely walks while observing fascinating animals in a serene and natural setting. Playground and restaurant available on site.
Ivana N — Google review
This wildlife park has so many animals: goats, deer, donkeys, and much more. You can get really close to many of them, they practically walk right into you, which is very funny. We happened to arrive just as they were being fed, and it was so much fun to see so many animals together at once.
Larissa V — Google review
Nice tour with the kids, many wild animals walking free. You can spent 2 hours there. Restaurant and kids playground at the entrance.

Big park on a hill. Free roaming goats and deer. They also have many other animals. If you ever want to play sound of music this is the place. Great place and cute donkeys!
Serpan — Google review
Incredible place to go to! The view was amazing, I can’t believe how lucky we were with the weather! The animals seem to be well taken care of, the goats and donkeys like to cuddle and our 3year old boy was very happy, and so we’re we. I recommend this place 100%, since it is such a good price and quality value.

Mountain peak
Hahnenkamm, Kitzbühel is a renowned peak offering a thrilling ski resort experience and hosting annual alpine ski races. The slopes cater to skiers of all levels, from beginners to experts, and the area boasts 170km of prepared pistes for skiing and snowboarding. In the summer, visitors can hike to the summit from Kitzbühel and enjoy breathtaking views before taking a cable car back down.
The Hahnenkamm is a mountain in Europe, directly southwest of Kitzbühel in the Kitzbühel Alps of Austria. The elevation of its summit is 1,712 metres (5,617 ft) above sea level. The Hahnenkamm (German: rooster's comb) is part of the ski resort of Kitzbühel, and hosts an annual World Cup alpine ski race, the 'Hahnenkammrennen'. The most famous slope on the Hahnenkamm is the classic downhill course, the Streif (streak, or stripe), which is regarded as the most demanding race course on the World Cup circuit. The course features highly technical, 'fall-away' turns (reverse bank), many with limited visibility. It also contains several flat gliding sections, immediately preceded by difficult turns, placing a premium on both technical and gliding skills. A run on the mountain's northeast face, the Streif course, is mostly in the shade in January. It is usually overcast and coupled with fog, the result being 'flat' lighting which compounds the course's difficulty. The 'Hahnenkammrennen' are the annual races, held since 1931 and a fixture of the men's World Cup since its inception in the 1967 season. The races were originally held in March, and sometimes in early February (1949 & 1951). Beginning in 1953, the races at Kitzbühel have been held in mid to late January, often the week following the Lauberhorn in Wengen, Switzerland, another classic downhill. Since 1959, the race has been broadcast on Austrian television.

In summer climb from Kitzbühel to the Hahnenkamm summit. Have a beer. You worked for it. Take in the amazing views, including the Wilder Kaiser Massif. Then take the cable car back down to Kitz. It's challenging if you're not in shape but definitely worth the effort. (Or do it the other way, taking the cable car up and walking down the Streif [World Cup ski run].)

Austrian restaurant
Located in the Old Town of Kitzbuhel, Huberbräu-Stüberl is a quintessential Germanic beer tavern housed in a medieval building. The restaurant offers locally-brewed Huberbrau beer and hearty dishes such as schnitzel, grostl, and grilled chicken. While ski boots are not allowed inside, guests can enjoy their meals at outside tables or opt for takeout to savor alongside their beers.
Nice cafe in the Old Town. Food, particularly the Goulash, was outstanding. Indoor and outdoor seating. We sat outside and seats were comfortable and views were good. Only drawback (and this is not the fault of the cafe) was local maintenance on street was quite loud during times of their work.

Spent New Year's Eve at this charming Austrian spot and it was a treat! The price was fair, the service lovely. They even accommodated my boyfriend and me at a big table, allowing us to celebrate in style. It was a tad noisy, but that added to the cozy ambiance. Amidst the revelry, the warmth of the place made it a memorable night. If you fancy a lively but snug New Year's celebration, or a nice warm typical meal this spot is perfect

Lovely place in Kitzbühel! We visited some friends and one night we wanted traditional Austrian food. When we first arrived there were no free tables, so we started with beers outside, loved it! Then we all had Wiener schnitzel and it was all we could have ever asked for. We finished the meal off with some apfelstrudel and vanilla sauce. Amazing meal and great people, will definitely be coming back!
Matilda J — Google review
This place is always packed and I got to share tables with other couples for the two nights I ate there. The food is great for Austrian food. But the conversations were fantastic.
Huan Z — Google review
The best beer I've had in Austria. Food consists of mostly meat dishes, spätzle, very traditional local cuisine. A very satisfying experience after a long day skiing. Authentic tavern.

The food variety is amazing.. very tasty, every dish was better than the other, we’ve visited this place almost every single day during our stay, either for a quick drink or for dinner. Highly recommended 👍🏻
Fahad W — Google review
Absolutely exact as expected and hopes - a beautiful and tasty Wiener schnitzel, made with veal and fried in butter. There could be a bit more potatoes and jam, but the taste was excellent. It’s a traditional Austrian/Vienna dish and the restaurant didn’t disappoint. I can recommend going here - great food and service! 💪🏼
Michael E — Google review
This restaurant we discovered during our ski trip offers delectable, flavorful, and authentic cuisine at fair prices. The menu features classic dishes like schnitzel and bratwurst, as well as stews, soups, pasta, and scrumptious salads, catering to every palate. The food is refreshingly uncomplicated, made with fresh, high-quality ingredients, and prepared to perfection. We had the pleasure of dining here twice and were thoroughly impressed by both the mouth-watering fare and the selection of beers. The staff was affable and attentive, ensuring our orders were served promptly. Overall, we highly recommend this spot for anyone in search of a satisfying and authentic dining experience

Asian fusion restaurant
LOIS STERN Restaurant Kitzbühel is a renowned fine-dining destination that has been delighting diners for over two decades. Located just outside the old town walls, this restaurant offers a diverse menu featuring Asian, European, and continental dishes as well as vegetarian and vegan options. The modern ambiance creates a welcoming atmosphere for guests to enjoy exotic delicacies and indulge in a unique culinary experience.
We had dinner twice at this lovely owner run restaurant during our trip to Austria in July 2024. This was the best dinner experience we had both in terms of food and service. We are vegetarians but they were great in accommodating all our dietary restrictions and the final product came our amazing with flavors of taste. This place is truly a gem and an ideal setting for a date night dinner experience. It is very personalized experience that we will not ever forget. The Chef is an outstanding food artist! Each and every meal we had was very thoughtful! The quality of the food was as good if not BETTER than many of the Michelin star restaurants we have been to! We cannot wait to visit again! Best Place to eat in Kitzbuhel by a long shot ! Small cozy restaurant where dad is the chef and mom and adult daughter run the show. Amazing blend of local food with an almost Asian flare. Everything we had was amazing and the wine selection was spot on. The entire family has real culinary chops/training. Impressive place.
Chad M — Google review
The best restaurant we went to in our week in Kitzbühel - especially if you're tired of the stodgy Austrian cuisine - meat and potatoes. It's simple, clean, Thai food and every dish was excellent - albeit the portions are a little small. I'd recommend the red curry and for dessert, coconut sorbet.
Gina L — Google review
Simply the best! Better than all the rest! Truly, excellent. The staff are wonderful. The chef is one of a kind, swift. The food is both inspired and delicious. When in Kitzbühel, you simply must.
Michael S — Google review
Incredibly tasty family restaurant, despite the full load the service was very good. I especially want to highlight the homemade coconut sorbet. Recommended to visit in Kitzbühel
Polina V — Google review
We really enjoyed the food, especially the appetizers (sashimi and tempura that was just as good as what we've had at Michelin ⭐ Japenese restaurants!). Our main dishes were good, but personally we weren't amazed. The location is very nice, it's quite small inside so a reservation is recommended. What we liked the most was watching the chef prepare the dishes all by himself, and he does this with a calmness that is quite impressive. The only thing we didn't like was the service, we felt like we were bothering the staff when we arrived at the restaurant, but maybe this was just bad luck since the place was already crowded when we arrived.
Alison A — Google review
We absolutely loved our experience at Lois Stern. The food and service was impeccable. The owners prepare the food and run the staff and they are so kind and welcoming. We would dine here every night of our stay if we could!
Lauren P — Google review
The service is wonderful and we enjoyed the ladies working, however, the prices are WAY too high for the food. The dishes were good but an appetizer of tempura vegetables should not be 24€, nor should a small curry chicken dish be 30€. We have dined at many Michelin restaurants and paid similar to what we paid here and received even better service, wine pairings, and multiple courses. We were not impressed sadly.

Nestled in the picturesque surroundings of Kitzbühel, Berggasthof Hagstein is a culinary gem that has been lovingly run by the Zehentner family for five generations. This charming establishment offers an authentic taste of Tyrolean cuisine, with seasonal dishes crafted from high-quality local ingredients by chef Franz. His wife Doris ensures guests feel right at home while their daughters Christina and Franziska lend a helping hand to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Great food, classy interior and attentive personnel. It’s not too far up in the mountains. If you want to walk there it’s just a ~45min walk from the Hahnenkamm Talstation. It has a nice view but don’t expect a panoramic view, it’s not high enough. Tip: Kaiserschmarrn and Holler Spritz and explore the Schleierwasserfall on your way 💯

The view is incredible, the food is good a bit overpriced but expected because of the atmosphere. The rudest thing is that the waiters ask for a tip even though you are already paying for the coperto and is very unusual for Italians to asks such a high tip.

Great views and beautiful setting but the service is really quite rude. If you don’t order a 3 course meal, there’s no chance you’ll get served. We ended up leaving after 15 mins when people who arrived after us got served before they even took our order.

This is the place to be if you want to mingle with the high society of Kitzbühel. Enjoy stunning views with sun until 4pm while listening to après-ski type music and watching people kill one bottle of champagne or wine after another. As a foodie, this feedback will help you if food is your main reason for visiting. ✅ The place has two areas (the restaurant and beet garden). Restaurant only with prior reservation. ✅ Vegan meal options: sautéed vegetables (12€) - small quantity- not enough on its own ✅ Vegetarian: Two Baked potatoes with herbal butter (10€)…you can make it vegan without butter ✅ Sunshine is guaranteed - sun sets behind mountain around 4pm. ✅ Accessible by cable car so you don’t have to ski to get there ❎ Extreme shortage of staff. Empty dishes piled everywhere. Felt sorry for the waiters. ❎ live DJ with super loud music…if you value a nice conversation while relaxing in the sun, this is not your place. ❎ They don’t serve traditional Austrian mountain food (e.g. dumplings, soups etc.) just classic European / Mediterranean food Saturday / February 2023

Restaurant
Restaurant Hochkitzbühel bei Tomschy is a legendary spot with an awe-inspiring panoramic terrace and delicious kaiserschmarrn, a thick pancake served with stewed plums. The mountain station of the Hahnenkamm lift has been revamped since 2015, offering quality combined with casual nonchalance. The restaurant features various guest rooms including a wine parlor and gondola parlor, as well as a lounge and bistro.
One of most perfect settings for a restaurant/bar in the world situated at the top of the gondola that brings you to the majestic Hahnenkamm. We enjoyed a stunning espresso martini before heading out to explore more of the mountain. Another amazing of example of traditional yet functional Tyrolean building. Staff was extremely helpful and efficient despite being a super high velocity day. Thank you very much for the hospitality!

Skiing Kitz and with the low snow cover we were riding the gondola back down. This place was rocking so we stopped in on a Sunday afternoon - great move on our part. It was a packed balcony with lots of people having a great time. Live band playing classic American Rock from the 50/60s and the entire crowd was dancing drinking and enjoying a beautiful sunny day.
