Porta da Vila is the main entrance to the old town of Obidos, featuring cobbled streets leading to the castle and adorned with whitewashed walls covered in colorful bougainvillea and geraniums. The area also includes the central square with Santa Maria Church and the Municipal Museum. Additionally, visitors can explore Direita for souvenirs and sample ginja de Obidos cherry liquor.
Very charming old streets that aren’t too busy! Many delicious cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops. People were so friendly and it was a beautiful place for photos.

Beautiful ornate gateway into the castle walled village of Obidos. There were street musicians rotating throughout the day, but this opera singer duo in particular were incredible. Wish I knew what track they’re singing because it was an absolute emotional banger.
Alexander ( — Google review
The door of the medieval town within the castle! The azulejos on the wall, the arch, and the stones… Overall, very beautiful! Sometimes, there is also live music or performance art around it, might be fun to watch.

Wasnr entirlelt looking forward to this stop but boy was I wrong. It just so happened that a Medieval Festival was going on when we stopped and it made the trip even more worth the visit. Can't believe how much fun we had seeing the sights exploring the town and seeing everyone perform. This was quite a visit. If you're considering going and you can time it with a festival I highly recommend it. It really made it something to remember.

Upon my arrival in Óbidos, I found myself thrust into a town that appears not to have heard the news that centuries have passed since its founding. Its cobblestones are worn, not from haste, but from leisure. The kind of leisure that suggests people still take time to savor life's simpler pleasures, such as good food, good drink, and the quiet hum of conversation. Porta da Villa is not merely the gate to the city, it is a chapter in Óbidos’ enduring story, one I am glad to have read."

This gate is a unique one. It leads to one of the more beautiful medieval towns

I love this place, Óbidos it is always a beautiful place to visit, it is well maintained and clean and keeps the tradition and historical alive. When we came there was two artists, one playing an instrument and the other posing like a tree. It is worth the visit.

Nestled within the walls of a medieval castle, a charming little town of narrow streets with shops and restaurants to discover. The walkway along the perimeter is not for the faint of heart - there’s no safety rails on the 4 foot wide pathway, and being at times 10+ meters above the town, it can be a little scary especially on windy days. Be careful as well for the stone walkways that have been weathered smooth over time (can be slippery). Expect to spend 1.5-3hours there. Amazing views and a couple old churches to see as well.

Praça de Santa Maria is a charming square in Obidos, adorned with beautiful stone patterns and the striking Santa Maria Church. The tiled flooring adds to its allure, while the historical significance of being a site for executions gives it added importance. This cafe and restaurant is at the end of Obidos Lagoon. It is reachable by a car with plenty of free parking space. I was spending my day with a bike, and this place offered a prefect place for a break. Nice views form the terrace towards the lagoon. There are tables inside, too. Bar
Bar Ibn Errik Rex is a unique and cozy drinking spot located on Rua Direita in Obidos. The cave-like interior is adorned with vintage spirit bottles, antique weapons, and captivating wall art that provides a medieval rooftop view. This local hotspot offers the opportunity to savor homemade ginja, a traditional Portuguese liquor made from sour cherries, along with flaming chorizo and cheese snacks. Visitors can also engage with the owner to learn about ginja production secrets.
Very unique bar and bought my ginja there. The owner is third generation sharing some history and stories about the bar.
Ai — Google review
If you came to a medieval town in rural Portugal and you don’t enjoy a flaming sausage with an affordable glass of port, then I would suggest the problem is with you and not this fine establishment. The owner is wonderful, the ambience is unmatched, and you will become instant friends with everyone else in the place. Shout out to them for saving my favorite rain jacket which I left there after probably one too many glasses of port. This place is friggin awesome!!
William B — Google review
There are so many ginjinha joints in this town and others, but this one is truly unique. The beverage here is (in our opinion - four adults) the best we’ve tasted. Not overly sweet, and more ‘full-bodied’ in character. But what sets this place apart from the others is the owner and his unique shop. The owner is a class-act, with a healthy sense of humor. He was charming and offered to take our picture as a family (and what a great trick he has to capture the best smiles!). Just a terrific man. Plus, his place has a ‘pirate’s cove’ kind of feel with all the bottles and woodwork in his shop. Highly recommend!
P. C — Google review
Bruno the owner of this family bar was fluent in several languages and was great with conversation about history here and Portugal in general. He also lives here within the castle walls. You should check it out!!
Kevin J — Google review
This bar makes its own ginja, and it was my favorite in the city. A local recommended it, and it definitely feels more authentic than the more touristy spots. I had to take a couple of bottles home!

Bar Ibn Errik Rex is a hidden gem in Óbidos! Everything about this place is outstanding — from the magical medieval atmosphere to the warm and welcoming owner who makes you feel like an old friend. The ginja served in a chocolate cup is absolutely delicious, and the selection of local drinks is top-notch. A cozy, quirky spot full of character — don’t miss it!
Alejandra A — Google review
Ginja was very good! Not much food tho, only bread, cheese and sausage. Very hot inside.

My friend and I had a truly amazing experience at this restaurant. Every aspect of our visit was perfect, from the delicious food to the comfortable atmosphere and the exceptionally nice staff. We look forward to returning in the future. 😊 P.S. You have to try the chocolate cake, it's excellent! 😇

Very nicely decorated restaurant with excellent staff and amazing food. The dish as simple as sea bream was cooked perfectly to my taste
Denis R — Google review
The restaurant was quaint and cozy, recommended to us by a shop owner. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had the squid salad and the seafood rice, both were absolutely delicious and the pear mousse dessert was one of the best things I have ever eaten!
Dawn S — Google review
Not sure how this place is so highly rated. We came in for lunch for 2 adults and 2 children. The chicken in the Cesar Salad was dry, the sea bream and the vegetables were not very good. Both our kids left most of their hamburger and linguini Bolognese uneaten, and said it didn’t taste good. The service was ok, nothing more. Quite disappointed and would not recommend.

Óbidos it’s one of the most beautiful towns in Portugal.. the streets are so charming and beautiful, small cafes and smiling people welcome you. Tasca Torta it’s a tiny and cozy restaurant located in the heart of the town, the decoration is simply stunning. the chef recommend me on the cod fish, it was unbelievable so delicious so fresh, we also drink great local white wine that was excellent. The meal was perfect.. all the staff (3 people) was so friendly and helpful. Go visit there !
Niv S — Google review
Been here on a Sunday evening and it was EXCELLENT. We had 3 courses: bread (you receive two different kind of breads) with olives and oil, main was the cod with corn bread topping (delicious! And you can choose 2 of ~5-6 sides), and for dessert we had some pear-compote and chocolate cake (it was more like some mousse au chocolate with some crispy biscuit!) - the combination of fruit and chocolate is awesome. Everything was really on point if not exceeded our expectations. The service was really kind too, so we felt really taken care of well. Would always come back! The only thing is: they could really add some decoration to the tables. Or a candle ;)
Beatrice K — Google review
Brilliant! Best meal in Portugal. Salmon Lasagne - simply incredible.! Tons of excellent moist salmon with just enough cheese & pasta. Dessert was chocolate cake - melts in your mouth (honestly). Unreal pastry with just the right complexity of chocolate. To top it off, serving a full house of 20+ guests there was only one waiter and one chef. Considerate, excellent English, and quick with service and response. Quite impressive! Thanks for a wonderful meal & a delightful experience.

Located in the enchanting streets of Obidos, Jamon Jamon is a must-visit for those seeking an unforgettable dining experience that showcases the best of Portuguese and Spanish cuisine. The restaurant offers seating on a shaded terrace under a 16th-century aqueduct or in cozy dining rooms with exposed-brick walls. Guests can indulge in traditional tapas and mains, such as pork cheeks braised in red wine, stuffed mushrooms, grilled octopus, duck rice, and fried padron peppers.
Very nice food. We went for the sharing dishes. 2 per person is definitely not too much, as the portions are quite small. The dishes come out the kitchen very quickly, which is a plus in our books. We also loved the service here. Everything was very well done.
CM P — Google review
Excellent food and service but with a few things to keep in mind. Ja!mon Ja!mon was a great meal. The salads were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully balanced and honestly some of the best we’ve ever had. The food overall was top quality, and the presentation was thoughtful without being overdone. Service was also a great. The staff was friendly, informative, and very accommodating with allergies, which we really appreciated. The swordfish and sweet-and-sour salmon were both excellent. Cooked perfectly, well-seasoned, and paired with sides that showed just as much attention to detail. Every dish felt like it had real care behind it, and nothing was rushed or generic. One thing to know: the codfish in a clay pot is a traditional Portuguese dish. It’s not made with fresh fish. The cod is cured in salt for over a year, which gives it a very salty flavor and a dense, gummy texture. This is not a problem with the restaurant it’s just how the dish is meant to be. That said, it may not be for everyone, and it’s worth asking questions before ordering if you’re unfamiliar with it. Prices are on the higher side, especially for lunch, but the quality and service make it worthwhile. Everyone at our table enjoyed their food, and we would absolutely return. This place is a great choice if you’re looking for elevated Portuguese cuisine and professional service in a relaxed setting.

Where to begin……. As per usual we found ourselves arriving right before the kitchen closed. This was an unplanned stop but we are so glad we did stop here! It was the highlight of our 2 week trip. Francisco seated us and even took the time to explain the menu and recommend a bottle of wine. This place is an experience. Amazing views, incredible food and hospitality. Luis was so funny and also very accommodating. Everything we had was amazing. I can’t imagine anything not being delicious here. Presentation was incredible! We hope to return!

Incredible food. We had the cheeks, potato skins, fried runner beans, shishito peppers, and the Iberian ham. The desserts were outstanding as well. Service was great and so welcoming. Make sure to get a reservation as multiple people were turned away because they were booked for the night.

Great place in Obidos for something different than the other restaurants that pretty much all have the same menu. They have tapas style dishes which were all decent!

Fantastic service, very nice and attentive. Nice selection of tapas style dishes, all were quite good but some of them could be richer in flavor.

The menu showcases exquisite Portuguese cuisine, including must-try dishes like shrimp risotto, wagyu beef, and blackened pork tenderloin drizzled with a delectable almond sauce.
Food was delicious, service was excellent. What more can you want? Highly recommend the scallop & prawn risotto. The chocolate mousse was possibly the best I have had in my life. Highly recommend this restaurant if you are in Óbidos

When you visit this charming medieval town. You should definitely stop by here to have lunch before heading out and hitting the road again. Did exactly this. The place is extremely charming, good service and also very good food. Would have liked to try more of the menu but felt many of the items would suit a nice dinner better. Therefore if you have the chance, come here for dinner if not! Would recommend this for sure. Cozy and homely feel.

The service was equally impressive; the staff was attentive, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a wonderful dining experience!

A fantastic evening in this interesting restaurant in a beautiful location. Immediately on arrival we had glasses of spumante put in our hands so we could cheer happy birthday to another customer. Our food was cooked to perfection and so tasty. The wine was amazing and dessert had to be shared as dinner was so good. Pedro made us feel like family and checked in with us on many occasions causing much laughter. Tom Cruise and Sharon Stone 😉

Wonderful restaurant with beautiful decoration and amazing serving. Great food, portions could be bigger. Some items we found overpriced, 4 Olives with smashed Olive mouse €7?.

Great Food and Hospitality! Staff is very responsive to requests and attentive. Just outside the castle walls of Óbidos. Parking can be a challenge, keep that in mind. We live local so we will be back.
Mick M — Google review
The ambiance is great, the service was also really great. The food was well executed but it just sort of wasn't too our taste. They use some cheddar cheese topping for the bacalhau and in my opinion it overwhelmed the dish after a few bites and I had to scrape off the cheese to finish the dish. My wife also commented her dish was also a little too heavy on the strong cheddar. It sort of felt french inspired instead of Portuguese dishes. Again, the dishes were well executed, just not to our tastes.

Incredible dinner at A Nova Casa de Ramiro. The black pig main course was sensational and fully justified it's tag as their signature dish! The service from the team was perfect - highly personably and very friendly. It was also excellent value in a lovely setting. Will 100% be returning if in Obidos again. First time here, a local recommended this place. Honnestly the food was great, flavorful and hot. The service was great, spoke english and was glad to explain the menu to us. I usually do not give negative reviews to businesses however our experience was not as expected. After waiting extremely long for drinks from our waiter and getting the feeling that i was getting ignored multiple times, I was forced to get up and ask for our drinks and even offered to take them to our table. At that time it appeared that our drinks started to get prepared and ultimately served, a litter of red sangria with a little something extra (a piece of lettuce 🥬). Don’t know why the attitude but a little smile goes a long way. The food was nice, we had Bacalao de nata, it was the best we had so far in our Portugal 🇵🇹 journey. As a former restaurant employee I can only suggest the owner to strengthen the team and step in to assist the waiter at least serving drinks when necessary.

We just ate lunch here for the first time today. Not many places are open on Sunday so we were pleased to find them open. The food was excellent. Authentic Portuguese cuisine. We had the melon and prosciutto for our starter and shared the Steak with Mushroom Sauce. It was very good and just enough for two people with small appetites. And the Sangria was quite good! We will return! Update: Since our first time here (long before Covid), we’ve returned three more times! I highly recommend the catfish! I’ve had it twice now. It was delicious! My husband had the pork cheeks! He loved it. The food and service is always great!

Alcaide is a charming restaurant located in the picturesque village of Obidos, offering a delightful dining experience. The retro dining room exudes a relaxed atmosphere, and while it may benefit from an update, the surroundings are easily overlooked once you indulge in their delicious specialties. The menu features mouthwatering dishes such as cod with walnuts, apples and cheese, grilled octopus, veal with mushroom sauce, filet mignon steak and grilled sole.
Amazing little hidden gem. Up some stairs so not super obvious. The food was second to none though and the service was great. It was a little quiet but we went on the Monday after Easter Sunday on a rainy day. I'm sure with more people in it would have a great atmosphere. Also an amazing view across the fields that surround the castle.

Category: Tourist Area. Based on a recommendation from our hotel, we had dinner here on our only night in Obidos. In fairness, there are many restaurants in town with attractive atmosphere and I suspect much of the food is similar, but we really enjoyed our choice. The restaurant is on the second floor, reached by a staircase from street level, through a Portuguese-tile-wainscoted hallway. The single, comfortable dining room has an old-world feel with rustic dark wood clothed tables, arch-backed chairs, herringbone terracotta brick floor, tongue-and-groove ceiling, and plenty of wine bottles everywhere, but we were led straight through it to one of only two balcony tables, which overlooked a green garden, village cottages, and the countryside outside the village wall. We started with the cherry tomato 🍅 and mozz salad (the way to assure that the tomatoes are fresh and ripe in such a salad is to use sliced or halved cherry tomatoes, as this chef did). As for my main, for the second night in a row I had an Iberico Secreto (at a different restaurant, not in Obidos), which is the best cut of pork in the world. 🌎 Grilled briefly over high heat, it was perfect and juicy. Sarah enjoyed the sea bass. Portions were more than we could eat, even after our 14,000 steps that day. We capped the meal with the luscious chocolate mousse. YouTube’s Chef’s Apprentice

My family of 6 found this hidden gem by recommendation of one of the local store owners. We arrived shortly after opening for lunch and were provided the best seat and view. Likely the most authentic and flavorful food we experienced our whole trip. We had the clams, octopus, swordfish and dessert and all were amazing. Probably the BEST baba de camelo I’ve ever had.
Andreana C — Google review
We had grilled octopus and cod fish. The octopus was fresh and perfectly grilled, with a slightly crispy exterior and a tender texture inside. The cod fish was quite unique, as it was our first time having fish served with cheese. Although it’s not something we’re used to, we still enjoyed the meal. For those in a hurry, this place might not be ideal since all dishes are freshly made to order.
Yu K — Google review
It was a quiet afternoon when we visited. The starter sardines and grilled fish were good. The rest like spaghetti and salted cod fish nothing special.
Ai — Google review
The food was well prepared, if somewhat dull. Large portions, but lacking anything to make it memorable; in short - food. Avoid the bony grilled sardines. The wine list is extensive, and ranges wildly in price. The service was terse. Everything was fine, but there was no friendliness whatsoever. At the end of the meal we felt a bit rushed out the door. It was somewhat akin to eating in a hospital or nursing home cafeteria. Fine, but nothing at all special. Old style food for the well-heeled elderly Portuguese tourist crowd. It seems there was a certain disdain for tourists. You can do better.
Rich P — Google review
Nice place. Super easy to reserve a table using the google maps reservation button on Android. The melted cheese with honey was delicious with fresh bread. The plates of fish were very generous and the shrimp pasta with garlic was very good.
