Churches & Cathedrals
Chiesa San Martino is one of the oldest abbeys in Ascoli Piceno, founded by Benedictine monks between the 8th and 9th centuries. The church hosts a torch-lit parade to the Church of the Historical High City (San Giovanni), accompanied by food, music, and moments of peaceful reflection. It's a beautiful place with a rich history waiting to be explored.
(Translated by Google) The church of San Martino is among the oldest abbeys in the province of Ascoli Piceno. It was founded by the Benedictine monks of the Farfa Abbey probably between the 8th and 9th centuries. The oldest information relating to the church, which reveals that a well-organised complex already existed at that time, is taken from the Farfense Cronicon and dates back to the 10th century, when Abbot Ildebrando of Santa Vittoria in Matenano illegally donated the possessions of San Martino, calling them «curtem Santi Martini». A document from the year 1030 testifies that the steward Trasmondo sold the complex of San Martino to the bishop of Fermo Uberto, calling it "Monasterium", and the rights pertaining to it. At the time of its foundation, the Abbey of San Martino enjoyed large territories, which were reconfirmed in 1193 by Emperor Henry VI: this shows that the abbey was the jurisdictional and religious center of the entire area. The church was probably built on the remains of an ancient pagan temple, as suggested by the portion of the wall in opus caementicium in front of the main facade. Even the titular saint of the church, particularly venerated in the Middle Ages especially by the Benedictines and symbol of the victory of Christianity, would seem to confirm this hypothesis. According to some theories, the abbey was built on the remains of the temple of the goddess Cupra, built by the Picene populations and restored by the emperor Hadrian in 127 AD. But the problem relating to the location of this temple is not yet resolved, as many prefer to place it in the current territory of Cupra Marittima. The church of the medieval complex of San Martino was preserved during a 16th century restoration. The façade of the church is very linear and reveals the internal partition into three naves: the central body is higher and is delimited by two half-pillars which are interrupted at the height of the slopes of the lower side naves. The façade is compact and has only the opening of the central rose window and a fragment of the foot of a Roman statue walled in above the entrance portal. The church has a basilica plan, with a semi-cylindrical apse and wooden trussed roof. The central nave is separated from the side naves by pillars which support five arches on each side. The main altar, raised two steps above the floor of the church, features a detached fresco depicting a Crucifixion with the Madonna, Pope and Holy Bishop. It is difficult to trace a dating of the work due to countless repaintings, but it is possible to hypothesize a dating to the 15th-16th century. The fresco of the Madonna del latte is very interesting: the original work, probably dating back to the 12th-13th century, has recently undergone a careful restoration which has allowed it to be readable and has brought out a beautiful color scheme. The subject reveals the continuity of the cult in this area: in fact the devotion to the Madonna Nurse was particularly felt in the countryside and is linked to the pagan cult of the goddess of fertility which in the past was celebrated near a water source, due to its value of life intrinsic to this element. In this area there was in fact a spring, as documented by the Roman cistern, the so-called Queen's Bath, found not far from the church. The church preserves many classical and medieval finds inside. The two epigraphs mounted on the walls are interesting: one, located above the main door, recalls the restoration work commissioned by Archbishop Alessandro Borgia in 1743; the other, on the pillar in front of the side door, recalls the restoration of the temple dedicated to the Goddess Cupra, decreed by the emperor Hadrian in 127 AD. The importance of this epigraph is attested by the fact that the removal of all the profane tombstones from the building, desired by Bishop Poggi in 1614, did not include the Hadrianic tombstone.
