Immerse yourself in the world of James Herriot, the renowned vet and author, by visiting The World of James Herriot. This attraction offers a glimpse into the life and work of the famous vet, including his former home and surgery. Explore re-created spaces from World War II, adding historical depth to your visit.
Great building with historic recreation of Alf Wight's (James Herriot) former practice rooms. Very detailed room layouts with period furniture, vetinary medications and instruments. Two vehicles on display and activities for children, recording playback and short cine films. Disabled access was good, including internal lifts. Complete section dedicated to the TV filming sets and equipment. Thoroughly worth a visit to learn about his veterinary practice and his books etc.

A wonderful and magical experience for fans of James Herriot! The World of James Herriot is a small but incredibly rich museum that beautifully captures the life and legacy of the real James Herriot (Alf Wight), his veterinary practice, and the world he wrote about so lovingly. The museum is set in his original home and surgery, offering an authentic and intimate look into his daily life and work. One of the highlights is seeing the actual set used in the All Creatures Great and Small series, alongside a fascinating collection of vintage veterinary tools and historical displays about the profession. It's a real treat for anyone interested in veterinary history or a fan of the books and shows. While there is an entry fee, it's absolutely worth it. The museum may be small, but it's packed with charm and nostalgia. If you're a fan of All Creatures Great and Small, this place is magical. The surrounding area of Thirsk is equally lovely – a picturesque Yorkshire market town that adds even more charm to the visit. Highly recommended for fans and curious visitors alike!

We absolutely loved this museum devoted to the life of the original James Herriot (pen name). It is the original house and veterinary office of the man behind the books All Creatures Great and Small. We appreciated the attention to detail throughout the rooms, and were fascinated to learn about the filming of the series that ran on BBC for many years. Upstairs there is a veterinary medicine museum that features equipment used to treat farming animals over the years, as well as a hands on kids museum with some delightful sets to entertain. We left having learned about the real life veterinarian challenges as well an insight to the amazing man behind the books. Parking is in the main Thirsk Pay & Display lot in the center of the town. It's about 2 blocks from the museum entrance.

Excellent value for money. Beautifully laid out. Brought back many memories. It's visual and tactile. Films give interesting and surprising information. The film sets give you an idea of the conditions they've worked in and how technology has changed. I would imagine all age groups would enjoy. It's a must if your an All Creatures Great and Small fan.

If you're a James Herriot fan, this is a must see destination. Wasn't on our to-do list, but was a quick train ride from York, so decided to check out Thirsk. The museum was full of interesting items and information. Cool to actually be in the house where the books were written, where Wight practiced and where parts of the first series of All Creatures were filmed. Regarding Thirsk, we visited on race day and a weekend so the town had tons of traffic and the square was crowded. Outside of Herriot World, not much in Thirsk. The train station is 1.5 miles or so from town. 8.5 pounds entrance fee.
Evan H — Google review
A very enjoyable time going round this museum. With several interactive games for entertainment for adults and kids alike if you want a go. Great value for money at £8.50 a adult. It says allow 1hr 30 mins to go round we were there over 2 hours. Enjoyed every minute. Not really knowing much about James herriot did not matter on visiting.
Daniel G — Google review
Visited The World of James Herriot in Thirsk and absolutely loved it! It was amazing, interesting, and really informative — fantastic value for money. Perfect for anyone who loves animals, the Yorkshire countryside, or the Yorkshire Vet. There’s so much to see and learn, and it’s all presented in such an engaging way. By far the best attraction I’ve visited for the price — a million times better value than the overrated York Dungeon, which felt overpriced and tacky by comparison. The James Herriot experience is full of heart, history, and charm. Highly recommend!
Francesca W — Google review
What a fantastic museum especially for 'All Creatures'fans. I didn.t realise he had written so many books! Set out in the original surgery from which Alf White operated. Upstairs there is a fascinating display of Vetinary equipment through the years. If you are in or near Thirsk this is a must visit museum.

Just had a lovely visit to this charming little museum. Saw the infamous Busby Stoop chair which was very eerie and some fascinating toys made from Italian POW's made at a nearby camp. We were greeted by Jim upon entry who was lovely, informative and very nice to us. Thanks for a lovely visit.

It is a popular thoroughbred horseracing location that offers fixtures from April to September each year. The racecourse, located in North Yorkshire, provides a picturesque setting surrounded by the beautiful Yorkshire countryside and hosts various events and entertainment alongside the races.
What a lovely little course. We camped over the weekend here Facilities for Caravans and Motor homes are not flash . But they are clean and adequate. We throughly enjoyed the race day swapping between listening the band and watching each race. Definitely will come again.

Lovely day, very pretty venue and looking in tip top condition, even the weather turned out great. We will definitely be back again. 👌👍

First visit to Thirsk Racecourse and what a fabulous day! Made to feel extremely welcome the minute we walked through the gates. Really well managed inside, all the stewards were friendly and helpful. Only downside was if you are sitting out of the sun under the gazebo it gets very cold very quickly, so had to keep my coat on all day. Hopefully next time the sun will be more apparent. Could not fault the facilities or the service. Will definitely be back very soon.
Wendy C — Google review
Had a fantastic day yesterday (2nd August 2025). The live band was amazing, everyone was dancing, drinking having a great day. We often go to Thirsk but go in picnic area, decided to go into grandstand and so glad we did. Thirsk really know how to keep their customers happy. Loads of choice from pizza ,kebab, burritos, chips, burgers, ice cream and much more, even my 12 year old grandson enjoyed his day. Thank you Thirsk for a great day, and I never had a drop of alcohol (was driving) I would definitely recommend it for a fantastic day out
Lynn S — Google review
It was my first time at Thirsk and a very enjoyable evening. I brought my granddaughter with me who had a great time, she enjoyed the hamburgers and ice cream and the free bouncy castle and also picked a winner. Found the people very friendly and talkative. Wasn't overcrowded so could move around freely. No long wait for food and drinks. Had a couple of winners and a free shuttle bus to and from the train station. Thinking of going back for family day. Winner winner all around.
Neil S — Google review
Nice course but the premier enclosure tickets are not worth money. You are unable to take your drinks up into the stand behind so cannot get an elevated view of the race. We unknowingly bought a bottle of Prosecco to share and because we were then restricted to a small area, were unable to see the first two races. We ended up spending the rest of our day in the grandstand because the view was so so poor. If the enclosure fence was moved to before the stand entrance, premier members would be able to access the area with their drinks and enjoy the races too. On a high note the staff were super friendly.
Claire S — Google review
Did park and ride, a d find it good value for money compared to similar on other courses. Was very busy day but plenty of facilities to cater for all. Only problems in my opinion is another viewing screen is needed as those present can't be seen from the picnic enclosure. Also next enclosure along where screen can be seen, we struggled to get room where viewing ramp is for wheelchair users. Full family's using, and didn't volunteer to move had to be asked by us and other wheelchair users. This happened on our previous visit also, however on that visit a staff member kept moving people. On this last visit no one was moved the whole afternoon, even though I mentioned the problem to a member of staff. There are no signs either informing people it's for wheelchair users

the racecourse as always was lovely staff helpful and friendly. Howerever, the cost of food and drink is ridiculous nearly £8 a pint of very average lager isnt going to make people rush back

The picturesque cobbled Market Place hosts weekly markets every Monday and Saturday. Visitors can explore the charming town center with its independent shops, cafes, craft shops, fashion boutiques, and a quaint cinema. The area is adorned with flowers and knitted characters on the bollards around the square.
Nice town, random collection of people, bikers, visitors, locals, the atmosphere is usually good. Plenty of places to eat/drink.
Michael B — Google review
Lovely little town square with some lovely independent shops as you'd expect. Very friendly locals and a great mix of visitors. Parking was free for one hour or £1.50 for 2 hours. That was enough time for a mooch and quick lunch.

So nice to see the knitted tributes around the market square
Margaret H — Google review
Lovely open Yorkshire market place with paid parking during the day Monday to Saturday. Several cafes and pubs (including a Wetherspoons). Several UK High Street shops but also several independents. All in all, a great place to visit for a couple of hours.

We love Thirsk at every time of the year. We always make an effort to visit twice. Fantastic selection of independent shops. Lovely community. Brilliant market and awesome tourist information centre. So much to do. If I can say. Avoid race days!
Ian M — Google review
What a gem! Took advantage of the outdoor seating, as the weather was lovely. Set in the middle of Thirsk, there's also a 70 plus seater restraunt. One portion of traditional fish and chips for my wife, and a chicken breast and chips for me. Delicious! Minimal wait, especially considering how busy they were. All deliciously and freshly prepared. Gorgeous.

Movie theater
Ritz Cinema is a charming neighborhood cinema located in the actual 'Skeldale House', offering an atmospheric experience with balcony seats and a single screen showcasing big-name releases. It also serves as a unique tribute to Alf Wight, the renowned author of the James Herriot novels, dedicated to veterinary science. The cinema provides an intimate and welcoming ambiance reminiscent of traditional moviegoing before the rise of larger chains.
What a delightful old cinema. The volunteers are very friendly and have really done this old cinema proud. Plenty of legroom, choice of stalls or balcony, attractive decor. For the hard of hearing like me, it was a pleasure as the sound system was excellent, clear but not overloud (clarity is required not volume). I didn't need their hearing loop but it worked incredibly well - better than some West End theatres and modern cinemas. On Sundays they even show subtitles. Thank you for a pleasurable experience.
Dave S — Google review
Beautiful cinema just like when I was a child. It was very busy when there especially for a Tuesday. The staff were great. I will be back next time I am in thirsk

Beautiful little cinema in Thirsk North Yorkshire. Makes you feel like you've gone back to the 1920s . Will definitely be going back soon , loved it .
Joe H — Google review
Amazing vintage cinema (with very modern projection, sound and comfy seating). Run entirely by volunteers for over 28 years. Absolute asset to Thirsk. A must to visit
Angela R — Google review
Visited last year. Was a nice old independent cinema. Short wait to get in. Staff were friendly. Had prepurchased tickets but the scanner wasn’t working to scan the tickets. Was disappointed you couldn’t buy popcorn.
Stuffy — Google review
Lovely place to go watch a movie if you don't want the hustle and bustle. Quiet and it has parking. I just hope they consider selling popcorn.
Tapiwa C — Google review
The screen isn't the biggest, the sound isn't the best, the seats don't recline, you can't pre book, only one choice of film per week and there is only a limited selection of snacks and drinks. BUT if you want to get even a glimpse of what the cinema of yesterday was like, you MUST try the Ritz. Fabulous. 🙂

Nestled in the heart of town, this tea house is an absolute gem. We recently enjoyed a delightful breakfast there, and it's one if the best tea houses we've ever been. The food was perfectly cooked; amazing eggs, crispy bacon, and a diverse selection of coffees and teas, all at very reasonable prices. The atmosphere was charming and warm, making it the perfect spot to relax and start the day. The place was clean and tidy. Service was another highlight. The staff was attentive and friendly, ensuring every guest felt valued and taken care of. In summary, this tea house is a must-visit for anyone seeking a delicious breakfast. Highly recommended!

We found this little gem in the centre of Thirsk while waiting for the Races today. Had a breakfast and it was perfect! Good quality sausages and bacon. Eggs equally so. Lovely bread. Brilliant attentive service even though we sat outside in the sun. If you fancy a spot on brekkie. Come here. We will be back very soon. Thank you.

Visited 20 September whilst in the area. Received a warm and friendly welcome and was promptly shown to a table. There was an excellent choice of menu. I chose sausage barm. It was delicious and had very fresh roll and quality sausages. My friend had toast, butter and jam. Our drinks were perfectly made. Very reasonable priced. We would highly recomend and return. Many Thanks.

I ordered lunch from Tea Time in Thirsk, and they delivered it straight to my office—fresh, hot, and absolutely delicious! The toasted sandwich was perfectly crisp with a generous filling, and the fries were golden and crispy, just the way they should be. The quality of the food really stood out, and it was clear that great care had gone into both the preparation and presentation. The delivery was prompt, and everything arrived in perfect condition. If you're looking for a tasty, well-made lunch with great service, I highly recommend Tea Time. I'll definitely be ordering again!

It offers a traditional deli, Yorkshire tea room, and sandwich bar where visitors can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or a delightful scone with cream. The tearoom proudly supports local suppliers and provides an array of products such as jams and sauces.
As you come out of the James Herriot building walking towards the square this is the first Cafe you'll come to. You can't miss it on the corner and it's blue and white exterior. The shop is downstairs and the cafe is upstairs. There's a large menu for a small cafe with a lot of choice. I went for a Coronation chicken with mango that came with an onion Bhaji, crisps and fresh salad. Excellent value for £8. It took me a while to eat it all and it was very tasty. It was a really nice place with quick service and very good value for money.

Lovely spot!! Gorgeous deli downstairs full of stuff you didn't know you needed! Sandwich bar behind this but upstairs is the cafe! Only small but characterful! We only had coffee and cake today but other people's lunch looked delicious. My latte was smooth and velvety and I loved the mugs! And the cakes were beautifully presented!!! Oh my goodness! Passion fruit, physalis, blue berries and cream! Gorgeous!! Yes, I would recommend it to anyone that can manage stairs. Great little spot!

Visitors can enjoy the excellent selection of craft beers while taking in the lively ambiance. The friendly staff and dog-friendly environment add to the overall appeal of this quaint establishment.
Absolutely brilliant pub and now one of my new favourites. Really quirky layout as it's clearly a very old build that is full of fun and character. Great friendly staff, very dog friendly and some fabulous beers on hand pull. Couldn't really ask for more ... But if you did you'd find an amazing space outside too!
Sean H — Google review
This is a small, quirky pub that to my knowledge only opens certain days of the week. The range of beers is good but not vast and the prices seem fair. The place comes alive when the live music is happening (Thursday and Saturday). Can't comment on the food if the actual serve it. Well worth a visit.

John G — Google review
This is an exceptional Thai restaurant that happens to be in Thirsk. But we have to say, the quality of the food and the level of service is special. We found this restaurant last year, and when we came back to the UK this year we had to go back. We were not disappointed. The chefs care about what they are sending out, both for quality and presentation and everything tastes like it was prepared fresh. The Chu Chee Tiger Prawns were amazing. But then again, everything was delicious and expertly prepared/presented. The Paneng chicken was rich and flavourful and the Pad Med Ma Muang had just the right amount of heat and sweet! Megan our server provided the right amount of attention and care, covering all our needs. The service was fast and attentive and she really made us feel welcome. It's evident that the chefs, staff and owners care about what they serve and how they serve it, and the result is a great dining experience that can be found on a little side alley in Thirsk. If you are thinking about trying this place, we recommend you do. We have been back several times over several years and every time its been great. From a family of well traveled foodies (from Canada)..

1st visit to this little gem tucked in Bakers Alley. Covid guidelines all in place. Warm friendly welcome. Staff very pleasant and informative on menu. Food was delicious. Scallop starter was my favourite with the king prawns a close 2nd. The shin of beef in the massaan curry spread across the plate with a spoon it was that tender. Lovely coconut rice for a bit of sweetness. Dessert menu looked lovely but we were both stuffed so no room. Delightful evening and look forward to sampling more.
