Immerse yourself in the world of James Herriot, the renowned vet and author, by visiting The World of James Herriot. This attraction offers a glimpse into the life and work of the famous vet, including his former home and surgery. Explore re-created spaces from World War II, adding historical depth to your visit.
Great building with historic recreation of Alf Wight's (James Herriot) former practice rooms. Very detailed room layouts with period furniture, vetinary medications and instruments. Two vehicles on display and activities for children, recording playback and short cine films. Disabled access was good, including internal lifts. Complete section dedicated to the TV filming sets and equipment. Thoroughly worth a visit to learn about his veterinary practice and his books etc.

A wonderful and magical experience for fans of James Herriot! The World of James Herriot is a small but incredibly rich museum that beautifully captures the life and legacy of the real James Herriot (Alf Wight), his veterinary practice, and the world he wrote about so lovingly. The museum is set in his original home and surgery, offering an authentic and intimate look into his daily life and work. One of the highlights is seeing the actual set used in the All Creatures Great and Small series, alongside a fascinating collection of vintage veterinary tools and historical displays about the profession. It's a real treat for anyone interested in veterinary history or a fan of the books and shows. While there is an entry fee, it's absolutely worth it. The museum may be small, but it's packed with charm and nostalgia. If you're a fan of All Creatures Great and Small, this place is magical. The surrounding area of Thirsk is equally lovely – a picturesque Yorkshire market town that adds even more charm to the visit. Highly recommended for fans and curious visitors alike!

We absolutely loved this museum devoted to the life of the original James Herriot (pen name). It is the original house and veterinary office of the man behind the books All Creatures Great and Small. We appreciated the attention to detail throughout the rooms, and were fascinated to learn about the filming of the series that ran on BBC for many years. Upstairs there is a veterinary medicine museum that features equipment used to treat farming animals over the years, as well as a hands on kids museum with some delightful sets to entertain. We left having learned about the real life veterinarian challenges as well an insight to the amazing man behind the books. Parking is in the main Thirsk Pay & Display lot in the center of the town. It's about 2 blocks from the museum entrance.
Barbara G — Google review
If you're a James Herriot fan, this is a must see destination. Wasn't on our to-do list, but was a quick train ride from York, so decided to check out Thirsk. The museum was full of interesting items and information. Cool to actually be in the house where the books were written, where Wight practiced and where parts of the first series of All Creatures were filmed. Regarding Thirsk, we visited on race day and a weekend so the town had tons of traffic and the square was crowded. Outside of Herriot World, not much in Thirsk. The train station is 1.5 miles or so from town. 8.5 pounds entrance fee.
Evan H — Google review
A very enjoyable time going round this museum. With several interactive games for entertainment for adults and kids alike if you want a go. Great value for money at £8.50 a adult. It says allow 1hr 30 mins to go round we were there over 2 hours. Enjoyed every minute. Not really knowing much about James herriot did not matter on visiting.
Daniel G — Google review
Visited The World of James Herriot in Thirsk and absolutely loved it! It was amazing, interesting, and really informative — fantastic value for money. Perfect for anyone who loves animals, the Yorkshire countryside, or the Yorkshire Vet. There’s so much to see and learn, and it’s all presented in such an engaging way. By far the best attraction I’ve visited for the price — a million times better value than the overrated York Dungeon, which felt overpriced and tacky by comparison. The James Herriot experience is full of heart, history, and charm. Highly recommend!

This was fabulous. A fan of all creatures great and small or not. Very interesting walk into the past.
Dawn J — Google review
Lovely museum wonderfully preserved with memorabilia from past productions of James Herriot. A fun top floor area for children to get a feel for being a vet and learning about animals. Plus a very interesting museum on veterinary tools and practices from bygone days.

Thirsk Racecourse Ltd has a rich history dating back to the 1700s, with its modern venue opening in 1923. It is a popular thoroughbred horseracing location that offers fixtures from April to September each year. The racecourse, located in North Yorkshire, provides a picturesque setting surrounded by the beautiful Yorkshire countryside and hosts various events and entertainment alongside the races.
What a lovely little course. We camped over the weekend here Facilities for Caravans and Motor homes are not flash . But they are clean and adequate. We throughly enjoyed the race day swapping between listening the band and watching each race. Definitely will come again.

Lovely day, very pretty venue and looking in tip top condition, even the weather turned out great. We will definitely be back again. 👌👍

First visit to Thirsk Racecourse and what a fabulous day! Made to feel extremely welcome the minute we walked through the gates. Really well managed inside, all the stewards were friendly and helpful. Only downside was if you are sitting out of the sun under the gazebo it gets very cold very quickly, so had to keep my coat on all day. Hopefully next time the sun will be more apparent. Could not fault the facilities or the service. Will definitely be back very soon.

Had a fantastic day yesterday (2nd August 2025). The live band was amazing, everyone was dancing, drinking having a great day. We often go to Thirsk but go in picnic area, decided to go into grandstand and so glad we did. Thirsk really know how to keep their customers happy. Loads of choice from pizza ,kebab, burritos, chips, burgers, ice cream and much more, even my 12 year old grandson enjoyed his day. Thank you Thirsk for a great day, and I never had a drop of alcohol (was driving) I would definitely recommend it for a fantastic day out
Lynn S — Google review
It was my first time at Thirsk and a very enjoyable evening. I brought my granddaughter with me who had a great time, she enjoyed the hamburgers and ice cream and the free bouncy castle and also picked a winner. Found the people very friendly and talkative. Wasn't overcrowded so could move around freely. No long wait for food and drinks. Had a couple of winners and a free shuttle bus to and from the train station. Thinking of going back for family day. Winner winner all around.
Neil S — Google review
Nice course but the premier enclosure tickets are not worth money. You are unable to take your drinks up into the stand behind so cannot get an elevated view of the race. We unknowingly bought a bottle of Prosecco to share and because we were then restricted to a small area, were unable to see the first two races. We ended up spending the rest of our day in the grandstand because the view was so so poor. If the enclosure fence was moved to before the stand entrance, premier members would be able to access the area with their drinks and enjoy the races too. On a high note the staff were super friendly.
Claire S — Google review
Did park and ride, a d find it good value for money compared to similar on other courses. Was very busy day but plenty of facilities to cater for all. Only problems in my opinion is another viewing screen is needed as those present can't be seen from the picnic enclosure. Also next enclosure along where screen can be seen, we struggled to get room where viewing ramp is for wheelchair users. Full family's using, and didn't volunteer to move had to be asked by us and other wheelchair users. This happened on our previous visit also, however on that visit a staff member kept moving people. On this last visit no one was moved the whole afternoon, even though I mentioned the problem to a member of staff. There are no signs either informing people it's for wheelchair users

the racecourse as always was lovely staff helpful and friendly. Howerever, the cost of food and drink is ridiculous nearly £8 a pint of very average lager isnt going to make people rush back

Cafe
Thirsk Market Place is a historic outdoor market dating back to 1145, offering a diverse range of products and fresh, locally sourced produce. The picturesque cobbled Market Place hosts weekly markets every Monday and Saturday. Visitors can explore the charming town center with its independent shops, cafes, craft shops, fashion boutiques, and a quaint cinema. The area is adorned with flowers and knitted characters on the bollards around the square.
Nice town, random collection of people, bikers, visitors, locals, the atmosphere is usually good. Plenty of places to eat/drink.
Michael B — Google review
Lovely little town square with some lovely independent shops as you'd expect. Very friendly locals and a great mix of visitors. Parking was free for one hour or £1.50 for 2 hours. That was enough time for a mooch and quick lunch.
Emma F — Google review
So nice to see the knitted tributes around the market square

Lovely open Yorkshire market place with paid parking during the day Monday to Saturday. Several cafes and pubs (including a Wetherspoons). Several UK High Street shops but also several independents. All in all, a great place to visit for a couple of hours.

We love Thirsk at every time of the year. We always make an effort to visit twice. Fantastic selection of independent shops. Lovely community. Brilliant market and awesome tourist information centre. So much to do. If I can say. Avoid race days!
Ian M — Google review
What a gem! Took advantage of the outdoor seating, as the weather was lovely. Set in the middle of Thirsk, there's also a 70 plus seater restraunt. One portion of traditional fish and chips for my wife, and a chicken breast and chips for me. Delicious! Minimal wait, especially considering how busy they were. All deliciously and freshly prepared. Gorgeous.

Monk Park Farm, located near Thirsk, is a delightful destination for families seeking an engaging day out. This charming farm features both indoor and outdoor feeding areas where visitors can interact with a variety of animals, including the adorable piglets and lambs. The experience is enriched by unique attractions like the egg hut nestled in a woodland area, which requires a bit of walking but offers rewarding views. Kids will love the excitement of pig races and bouncing pillows that keep them entertained for hours.
A lovely day close and personal to many farm animals, a walk round the park and play in the park. And the staff in cafe where friendly and helpful. The play park and extra large sandpit was a hit for a toddler. My favourite was the highland cows. All the above at a good ticket price so definitely value for money
Tracey P — Google review
First time here and would recommend to any age group. Animals are well cared for and there is a good range of activities for children to take part. The have a pig race during the day which was fun to watch as the pigs seemed to be the ones in charge. There's a lovely woodland walk too.
Dawn F — Google review
We traveled 3,500 miles & Monks Park was on our itinerary as we saw it on The Yorkshire Vet. A great place to visit with or without children. Up close encounter with Pygmy goats, highland cows & alpacas was a special joy. The paved walk through the property & woodland trail was so peaceful. A very clean environment for the animals & visitors. Highly recommend visiting for kids 4 to 99 years old. Handicap accessible.
DinerGalRee — Google review
We visited for the adults only date night on a Friday. Overall enjoyable experience with a range of activities throughout the night including pig racing, meeting the animals and tractor rides. There was various food and drink vans and a live singer which added to the experience. Only downside was there was no sheltered areas for when it began to rain. Definitely worth the £12 per person entry for a different night out.
Tod H — Google review
Had a great evening pumpkin picking — really enjoyed it! There were lots of different pumpkins to choose from, great food options, and a lovely atmosphere. I also loved visiting all the animals. It was my first time visiting, and I’d definitely return!
Jess R — Google review
Great place for a day out with the kids. Probably up to 10 years old. Our 5 and 8 year old grandchildren loved it. Price is very reasonable for a family ticket. Food in the cafe was good, and not actually that expensive compared to similar places. Lots of activities in a beautiful setting. Only negative would be the lack of places to cool off on a very hot sunny day. We survived though.
Phil J — Google review
Great farm for a family day out. We were camping nearby and decided to come here for the day and there were so many different activities and animals to keep the kids busy and entertained. The multiple play parks are great sizes for kids of all ages, the staff are very friendly and the sand pit especially was a huge hit. This farm is definitely one of the best for “value for money” and we’ll be back when next in the area!

The Kilburn White Horse is a famous landmark located in England, known for being the largest and most northerly turf-cut hill figure in the country. It was created in 1857 by a village schoolmaster and his pupils, inspired by the chalk hill figures of southern England. The site offers stunning views from Sutton Bank, which has been described as having some of the finest scenery in England.
View it from a distance 👍 Great walking in the area, and you can park at the base of the horse very cheaply for the day. I prefer to park at the visitor centre at the top of Sutton Bank to save the climb as there are many other great views to be had, and in fair weather, the gliding club will be operating.
Andrew C — Google review
No problem with car parking but not a weekend or school holidays. We did the yellow walk which was challenging initially up very steep steps/ trail. Then walked all round the top by the glider field. Dog friendly but we did put ours on a lead around the top when there were steep drops and no fences (I don't trust him not to leap off!) Downward section steep and rocky. I imagine it would be slippery if raining but the sun was out for us. Really enjoyed it.
Carol A — Google review
We didn’t get up close, we saw it from the distance. For the enthusiast who wants to get up close, there is a small car park nearby. Fun to have seen it.
Hans R — Google review
Lovely views and a good walk. We started in the small car park near the horse and walked via the visitor centre to Sutton Bank. Lots of effort has been put in place to accommodate people in wheelchairs (if you park at the visitor centre). Food and cakes great at the visitor centre car park and a first rate cup of tea. Unless your dog is very sensible, keep it on a lead as there are some really steep and unfenced drops. Also great for watching the gliders.
Tracy C — Google review
We called here on the way home from Thirsk. A bit of a winding road to get there. There are other places you can stop nearby. £2.50 to park but the money goes to the forestry commission. You can use the slope of steps to walk to the top of the white horse.
Chay B — Google review
Was driving past it as we spotted it so had to park up and get a photo of this famous landmark in North Yorkshire
Amber N — Google review
Amazing chalk cut out of the white horse cut into the hills. Lovely walks and the daffodils looked beautiful on the side by the car park
A G — Google review
Not a pretty site up close, just a pile of off white chalky rocks, very long steep climb up around the top of the horse and some muddy woods to walk through at the bottom by car park, £2.00 charge for all inc. Blue badges. If you have any disabillity avoid it, view from a distance or hire one of the gliders next door.

Fantastic little cafe, staff were lovely and helpful. Had a slice of the most amazing chocolate orange cake and the coffee was excellent too. Would definitely recommend.

This is obviously a very popular cafe in the centre of Thirsk; we were lucky to get seating near the counter and it was full whilst we were there. There is also a small amount of seating outside with great views of the Market Place. It’s quite a quirky place with lots of memorabilia linked to cycling. Service was reasonably quick. I had a piece of gluten free lemon drizzle cake which was excellent; was pleased to see that it was clearly marked and under a separate cake dome. My husband had coffee and a very large scone which he enjoyed.

We called in today for breakfast and have to say this is one of the most friendly cafes we have been in! We had our dog with us and were immediately welcomed, we ordered small breakfasts which were a generous size and totally delicious, our dog was very impressed with his doggy sausage and bowl of fresh water brought for him! Well worth a visit if you are in Thirsk!

Stopped off at Thirsk while touring in the Yorkshire Dales, and had a late lunch at this welcoming little café in the marketplace. It was very busy when I arrived, but I managed to get a small table inside. The café seems very popular with cyclists, and the walls are covered with cycling memorabilia as well as nice artwork. There's a clean toilet behind the counter. The staff were very friendly and service was quick. The menu offered a good choice of breakfasts, sandwiches, toasties and lunchtime specials. There was a wide selection of speciality teas, and you can also get beer and wine here. I ordered a homemade vegetable quiche with salad and a tasty homemade coleslaw. The quiche was delicious and piping hot, and the salad, with radishes and beetroot as well as the usual tomato and greens, was crisp and fresh. Generous portions. The pot of good Yorkshire tea was served with a jug of hot water. There were also mugs, tea towels, preserves and other gifts for sale. A very satisfying lunch experience! Would definitely come here again.

Italian restaurant
Bianco Ristorante Thirsk is a popular Italian restaurant in the heart of Thirsk & Northallerton. This family-run establishment takes pride in offering a delectable menu made with fresh, quality ingredients at great prices. The restaurant also boasts an impressive selection of Italian lagers and wines to complement their mouth-watering dishes. Visitors have praised the excellent food, friendly service, and beautiful ambiance, making it a must-visit dining destination for those exploring the area.
We were visiting the races at Thirsk this weekend for the first time and stopping in the town centre. Feeling extremely hungry we popped out for food and immediately came across Bianco Ristorante. The building itself really drew you in and once we checked out the menu, we knew we had to give it a try. When we walked in, the restaurant was heaving, always a good sign, so we decided to ask for a takeaway. The gentleman that served us, so sorry I didn't get your name, was wonderful! He apologised for there being no tables inside but offered to get us drinks if we were happy to sit outside and wait. He was so extremely polite and accommodating, and we were more than happy to enjoy the drinks and watch the world go by. The food was ready in no time and he once again thanked us for waiting outside. We got back to the hotel and when we opened the boxes, we couldn't believe the high quality of the food. This was the best pizza and garlic bread we have had in years! No wonder the restaurant was so busy. Thank you so much to the fabulous host of the restaurant and we can't wait to visit again next time we are in Thirsk. 10/10 for food, location and of course service!

Accommodated walkin at 4 pm on Saturday without a booking for a quick meal. Excellent service in a very clean restaurant with handicap accessibility. Lively place for gatherings in the center of Thirsk. Gets noisy quickly. Entrees: Special of the day: Fruitta Del Mar of mix seafood: mussels, salmon, cod in a light tomato based sauce with mixed olives was tasty. Cod was dry as old boots. Rice with sautéed veggies on top was very good. Fish & chips was crunchy on top but soggy on the bottom. Large steak cut chips were ok with basic tartare sauce. Peas looking a bit wrinkly in a cup were ok-love peas & ate them anyway due to hunger. Very fresh salad with some white bitter iceberg in the middle. Good Evoo to drizzle on salad. A local chef recommended the risotto but I make it often myself being Italian. Outside one can smell oil in over cooked garlic. When we left our clothes smelled the same way. Nonetheless, the staff made up for a “meh” meal. Nice wine selection. Very clean bathrooms with handicapped access on 1st floor. Cashless payment available.

Was a nice Italian, with English dishes for those with a plainer plate. Plenty of room inside with bright and clean. A couple of small tables outside, we sat there due to dogs. Our first visit we had pizza and was pleasantly surprised. A good pizza done in authentic pizza oven. Not a bad price, like all places drink is the costliest item on the menu! Would happily recommend.

My partner and myself arrived in Thirsk quite hungry. It was 3.30pm and we hadn't eaten. We stumbled upon this restaurant and read the menu outside, So decided to dine there. We were welcomed with a lovely smile and shown to a seat and eventually (the only hiccup) were brought a menu. We chose from the set menu and we were not disappointed. The starters were substantial and delicious and the main courses...a pizza and a chicken dish were exceptional. ..with drinks £42 was a bargain and we will make our way to return again.

We had so much fun chatting with everyone. What makes traveling memorable. We were steered here from a local while in a pub, saying this was the best in town & he was right! The portions as shown were large, light crisp batter (gluten free option), too many chips for one person- all fried perfectly in good flavored, clean oil. Big plus. Great mushy peas. Get a large side container. So yummy. One of the best memories was that as the locals passed by the owners had a few moments to chat & say hello to them & their dogs. Lovely. It’s what makes Thirsk a special & beautiful town to visit in North Yorkshire. Cashless option Handicap accessible with one small step. Free smiles.

Had our friends from Poland visiting and took them here after a day out in York. and They literally can’t stop talking about the food (delicious), the staff (super lovely and welcoming), and the handsome dude who helped serve us. (He’s not my type, but undeniably objectively attractive.) Great value, lovely staff, amazing fish and chips and mushy peas. Would give 6+ stars if possible 👌❤️

First visit and was very impressed. Staff were very friendly and super helpful and the food was lovely. My Mum was delighted at the Gluten free options and I'm sure will be visiting frequently from now on!

Usually I'm dubious when someone gives a recommendation but many thanks for Dave putting me on to this establishment after a hard day's graft hit the spot perfectly. Then looking at crowd of locals that gathered just as I had received my evening meal can see why it's a favourite with them . Once I got to my car and parked up presentation was perfect the new potatoes were cooked how they should be then the fish was absolutely delicious so definitely can only give a 5star review ! Thankyou soo much for the extras to which I saw the price more than reasonable, I've paid more for a lesser quality product . Then lastly the staff were professional but also friendly many thanks. I'll definitely Recommend to friends and colleagues and I'll no doubt look forward to going here again . Rick TM working on A19 .

Nestled on the edge of the North York Moors, Carpenters Arms in Felixkirk offers chic country-style rooms and suites with garden views. The pub boasts a cozy atmosphere with original features and luxurious yet unpretentious furnishings. Guests can enjoy free breakfast, dining, and a welcoming pub experience. The inn takes special care in sourcing fresh ingredients for its delicious food, including produce from its own kitchen garden.
We have just visited for Sunday lunch, on a visit to the area from Newcastle. We did some online research and chose here, and so glad we did. My wife and I both agreed it was the best Sunday lunch we've ever had, everything was cooked to absolute perfection and can't get it any less than a 10/10. The staff were great, friendly and attentive and made a fuss over the dog. Nothing was a bother. We've already said despite living over an hour away we will travel back here in the near future just to have that roast dinner again
Neil M — Google review
The location and interior are excellent, creating a lovely atmosphere. The food was good, though perhaps a little on the pricey side for what it was. Service could have been better — our drinks order wasn’t taken before the food, and one of the wine glasses had lipstick on it. Some staff seemed disengaged, and no one checked in during the meal. These things let the experience down slightly, but overall it was still a good evening.
Matthew H — Google review
A few years since we were in the area, and since we ate at the Carpenters Arms. It was brilliant then, so had to return. And we weren’t disappointed. A very busy evening, but the service was excellent. The food was first class. We ate in the conservatory on a very hot evening, and the patio doors being open created a perfect temperature and atmosphere.. Well done to all.

Wonderful Sunday roast! Have eaten here previously and both visits have been great but the Sunday roast was top notch - everything was cooked to perfection including the buttery soft, pink beef. Lovely wine selection too. Service was brilliant - staff checked in during each course to check everything was OK - attentive but not overbearing. It appeared that most, if not all, of the tables were booked and the restaurant was busy, however the service and pace of dishes being served (and plates subsequently being cleared from the table) was faultless. No delays but also not rushed - a lovely relaxing end to the weekend! Just a really fabulous visit 😊

Lovely room, easy to walk in disabled bathroom, with shower. Bed not too high, to be able to get into, being only 5 foot, I often find it difficult, but not here, to room has a mini fridge with little bottles of fresh milk, a nice touch. Menu is good, plenty to choose from, not being vegetarian, I didn't notice any vegetarian food, staff enquired about any allergies, which was good. Food was very nice and cooked well.

Ate last night in the Carpenter’s Arms with family. Best yet. Two young girls waiting on were Stars 🌟 Food choice better now with the added twist of chef specials. On time, and very tasty. Could not fault one starter or main (No room for dessert 🍮) Nailed it 👍🏻

I was disappointed with our stay the room was nice but very warm and no Air-conditioning. The bathroom was like a sauna and had the underfloor heating on .Our toilet didn't flush properly. When we had our meal in the evening we were kept waiting even though there was hardly anyone in the restaurant. They were out of various things .The win we wanted they were waiting for there suppliers. At breakfast they didn't have any fruit they were waiting for suppliers.

East side of town

Sutton Bank National Park Centre, located in Yorkshire, offers some of the most stunning views in England, as declared by vet and author James Herriot. It serves as the flagship cycling hub for the North York Moors National Park and is renowned for its family-friendly rides, pump track, purpose-built trails, and access to extensive bridleways and country lanes. The center also features a quality bike shop with cyclist support services including bike and eBike hire.
Good parking facilities and from the car park there is easy access to gentle walking trails that provide stunning and far-reaching views over the countryside on a clear day. The cafe on site is excellent; the food is delicious and well presented...a cut above your normal park cafe. The staff were very friendly and efficient. All in all a great place to spend the day!

Great place for walks and mountain bikes. We took 4 teenage lads who decided to do the 18 mile red circuit which was beautiful, the sun was shining and the views were amazing. Be warned the last couple of miles are the hardest as you make your way back up Sutton Bank to the car park and there were a few occasions when I had to push the bike. There are two other routes with the green easier route and a blue intermediate route. There is a beautiful little cafe half way around where you can grab a drink and catch your breath. The views from Sutton Bank, on a clear day, are stunning. It's definitely recommended.
Steven W — Google review
Great visitors centre with plenty information for the walks and mountain bike trails, cafe, and reasonably priced parking. You'll need at least 2 hours if you're going to venture any further than the immediate viewpoint on foot. To do the top of Kilburn White horse, it's on a 4km loop. There's a m/bike hire centre on site if that's your fancy. The closest viewpoint is just about doable by wheelchair with an experience aid.
Andrew C — Google review
Great scenic hot spot for walks and exploring.. both the white horse side where you can watch the gliders. Or walk along the top of the cliff on the same side as the tourist centre, gorgeous views.. loads of parking.. only issue is there isn't many bins around
Nicola C — Google review
Stunning views, lovely walks and a fascinating history to learn about. Relatively flat if you walk the main route to the white horse, so suitable for disabled access. You do have to pay for parking but didn't mind because of how beautiful and well kept the nature trails were. Definitely would visit again.
Claire — Google review
Much improved place to park for loads of available walks or even just a coffee and snack. One downside, parking tariff is 'Up to 2 Hours' or 'Over 2 hours' they could have had a few more options since a lot of walks are over 2 hours. Other than this, brilliant. 👍🏼
Matty S — Google review
Great walks here to suit all. Fairly flat ones or steep one down to Gormire Lake. Disabled can do some of them on electric trampers. Fantastic views. Good picnic site with tables & benches.

White Rose Book Cafe is a charming family-owned bookshop in Thirsk, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere. In addition to an extensive collection of books, they also offer various items such as prints, toys, maps, and diaries. Visitors can enjoy breakfast baps with bacon or sausage as well as homemade soup, sandwiches, and pate for lunch.
The best book shop to visit! In the centre of Thirsk, excellent variety of books & a really nice welcoming cafe. Incredible books on display & tasty food & drinks in the cafe. Lots of authors sit in for book signings, we had the chance to buy Julian Norton's latest book(TV's "The Yorkshire Vet"), meet & greet & get a personalised copy of his book. Nice atmosphere, staff very helpful & welcoming.

An absolute delight. Quiet beautiful back garden, friendly helpful staff. My sweetie and I are visitors from America and we both wanted to try the White Rose Savory Tea: fresh cheese scone, chutney jam, Wensleydale cheese and Yorkshire tea. All delicious. A friend who lived in Yorkshire for many years told us to be sure and try Wensleydale cheese (best in the world) and it sure was good. I found that scone, butter, chutney jam and a slab of cheese all chewed together was exquisite. We also enjoyed a nice conversation with a young man who works here, comparing driving the steep hills of my native San Francisco with the steep hills of the Yorkshire Dales. The cafe is very child friendly, with a playhouse for the little ones. And by the cash register was a basket of apples from somebody’s tree and a sign saying help yourself.

Fish & chips restaurant
Fish and chips takeaway
The White Horse Cafe in Thirsk is a well-established eatery that specializes in serving traditional fish and chips. Since its establishment in 1982, this restaurant has prided itself on providing high-quality and affordable food. Their fish and chips are cooked using the traditional Yorkshire method, using beef dripping for frying. The cafe offers a warm and welcoming ambiance, with friendly staff who provide excellent service. Visitors to Thirsk should definitely consider giving this restaurant a try.
Lovely Fish and chips, with "Yorkshire tea" in a nice cozy upstairs restaurant. The fish was piping hot and cooked to order served with tea and bread & butter. Attention by the waitress was very friendly and the service with a lovely smile made me feel welcome, I would eat here again on my next visit to thirsk.
David B — Google review
Nice place and presented well with good service . Food is average to good depending what you get. Atmosphere is likewise depending on the clientele. Prices are reasonable for the location. There are many alternatives for eats in the area. We had a takeaway on our visit this time; the fish was done well with crispy batter, yet the chips were soft and floppy - we like ours with a little crunch. Overall it was pleasant enough but nothing to write home about.
Brian W — Google review
Our first trip to Thirsk and across the road from our hotel was this Chop shop. Yorkshire chip shops have a good name, so gave it a try. We did enjoy it although I would not give it 5 stars it was ok. Fish was nice a bit too much batter for me. Staff very friendly and nice. Not much seating area, but benches outside.
Andrew W — Google review
I came here a year ago and it was 5 stars across the board. This time it was very disappointing. The chips tasted odd, perhaps it was the potato variety, and the plate was very greasy. The fish was ok but last time it was excellent. My 3 year old granddaughter who at 2 years old had eaten practically all of a child’s fish only managed a couple of bites this time. So to sum up; if there’s nothing else try this place and you might be lucky otherwise don’t as you might get a not so good day.
Chris E — Google review
Pleasantly situated in the market place thirsk this takeaway restaurant is extremely popular with good outside sitting area loverly upstairs restaurant and some inside sitting places downstairs absolutely delicious fish and chips also does ice creams in the takeaway at front of building nice pleasant staff delicious experience

Situated on the first floor above the chip shop this is a really good place to eat. I believe it seats 70+ (not sure where I saw this) but there’s lots of space and great views down onto the Market Place. It’s a comfortable and cosy venue with some lovely features-quirky fish shapes, big mirror… The toilets deserve a mention as they are bright, spotless and plenty of room. It was difficult to choose lunch as everything looked so good, but we eventually settled on a pensioner special together with steak pie and chips plus another pot of tea. The portions were very generous and food cooked to perfection; we enjoyed our lunch! I loved the fact that our cutlery was wrapped in the serviette and sealed with a branded sticker. The staff were lovely and very helpful. We were only visiting for a few hours but if we come back to Thirsk, White Horse Cafe will definitely be our lunch venue of choice.

It offers a traditional deli, Yorkshire tea room, and sandwich bar where visitors can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or a delightful scone with cream. The tearoom proudly supports local suppliers and provides an array of products such as jams and sauces.
As you come out of the James Herriot building walking towards the square this is the first Cafe you'll come to. You can't miss it on the corner and it's blue and white exterior. The shop is downstairs and the cafe is upstairs. There's a large menu for a small cafe with a lot of choice. I went for a Coronation chicken with mango that came with an onion Bhaji, crisps and fresh salad. Excellent value for £8. It took me a while to eat it all and it was very tasty. It was a really nice place with quick service and very good value for money.

This is an exceptional Thai restaurant that happens to be in Thirsk. But we have to say, the quality of the food and the level of service is special. We found this restaurant last year, and when we came back to the UK this year we had to go back. We were not disappointed. The chefs care about what they are sending out, both for quality and presentation and everything tastes like it was prepared fresh. The Chu Chee Tiger Prawns were amazing. But then again, everything was delicious and expertly prepared/presented. The Paneng chicken was rich and flavourful and the Pad Med Ma Muang had just the right amount of heat and sweet! Megan our server provided the right amount of attention and care, covering all our needs. The service was fast and attentive and she really made us feel welcome. It's evident that the chefs, staff and owners care about what they serve and how they serve it, and the result is a great dining experience that can be found on a little side alley in Thirsk. If you are thinking about trying this place, we recommend you do. We have been back several times over several years and every time its been great. From a family of well traveled foodies (from Canada)..

1st visit to this little gem tucked in Bakers Alley. Covid guidelines all in place. Warm friendly welcome. Staff very pleasant and informative on menu. Food was delicious. Scallop starter was my favourite with the king prawns a close 2nd. The shin of beef in the massaan curry spread across the plate with a spoon it was that tender. Lovely coconut rice for a bit of sweetness. Dessert menu looked lovely but we were both stuffed so no room. Delightful evening and look forward to sampling more.
