Zoo
Outdoor Activities
Tama Zoological Park, nestled in the picturesque Tama Hills, is a sprawling zoo that offers free shuttles and showcases a diverse range of local and international animals in their natural habitats. Spanning 52 hectares, this park boasts three major ecological areas - the Asiatic Garden, the African Garden, and the Australian Garden - along with a vast Insectarium.
We visited Tama Zoological Park in Tokyo, and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable days of my trip! The zoo is huge, green, and peaceful — it doesn’t feel crowded or commercial like some other places. The layout is divided into Asian, African, and Australian zones, and each area is designed to feel natural for the animals. The Lion Bus Safari was definitely the highlight — getting to see lions up close through the bus windows was thrilling! I also loved the koalas, elephants, and snow leopards. The butterfly house inside the insectarium was magical — a must-see for both kids and adults. The entire park is clean, well-organized, and easy to explore. There are vending machines, benches, and shaded areas all around, so it’s comfortable to spend the whole day. The staff were kind and helpful, and English signs made everything easy to understand. If you want a relaxing escape from Tokyo’s busy streets, Tama Zoo is perfect. It’s educational, fun, and surrounded by nature. Highly recommended for families, couples, or anyone who loves animals!

Excellent zoo. Cheap entry. This zoo is huge. Be prepared for walking a ridiculous amount. If you want to see the whole zoo, bring food and drinks and realize it will take 4+ hours. You can get on the free bus and just ride it around but you can't really see the animals well that way. Removed a star due to the ridiculous lion bus where they designed it so you can't see the lions without paying extra to take a bus through the isolated enclosure.
David — Google review
It's a wonderful zoo but it is quite large and could take some time to see everything. You may want to map things out a bit. If you go through the week, you cannot book the Lion Bus tickets in advance, you need to go there right away to get them and they are timed. You must also get there 10 minutes before the time on the tickets. The staff are very nice and helpful but I didn't encounter anyone who spoke English. Through the week is also typically when a lot of schools visit so it may be a bit crowded with children.
Bethany M — Google review
Of course! Here’s a shorter, Google-review-friendly version 👇 ⸻ This zoo is huge and beautifully spacious, with some steep slopes. Many say strollers aren’t recommended, but I think bringing one is helpful if your child can’t walk long distances (you can rent one at the entrance). There are free shuttle buses, but distances are still quite far. Not many restaurants inside, so bringing your own food is a good idea — there are lots of nice picnic areas. A great place to spend the whole day! Parking fills up fast but smaller lots are available nearby. There’s even an indoor amusement park across the street for more fun after the zoo.
Cerise — Google review
Had a wonderful time taking the little one to this zoo. We got in just as the Park opened and it was not crowded. We were one of the first people at the lion exhibit and we almost had a whole lion bus to ourselves where we got to see the lions up close. They put meat on hooks on the outside of the bus so they come up right against the glass to get it. Easily worth the 500 yen or so to get on the lion bus. We got to see a lot of the animals we wanted to see and luckily there was a free shuttle that travels within the park. Each stop brings you a cluster of exhibits. Our little one was too tired to walk so we took advantage of the shuttle. It was a little drizzly when we visited, but I think going in Nov was a great time since it wasn't too hot or cold. Since we didn't see eveything, we would definitely go visit again.

You can visit this zoo mostly guilt-free. I usually avoid zoos in Japan because of the poor conditions for animals, but a friend convinced me to try the Tama zoo. I was surprised and relieved! Most animals have a large enclosure with space to roam and I only saw two with signs of stress (pacing, plucking). There are no animal shows, thank goodness. Most animals can hide and take a break from viewing if they want. A few enclosures are too small, but it seems like they are renovating. A huge new enclosure for the endangered Japanese Toki is set to be completed in 2026. In particular I was impressed by the huge walkthrough aviary, butterfly insectarium, and vast climbing structures for the orangutans. Because of the large enclosures, it is a big zoo. It can take a whole day to visit, and some animal viewings stop at 4PM, so I recommend coming early. For those that tire easily or with small kids, there is a free shuttle bus that goes up the biggest "hill". There are many picnic spots, but there are many vending machines and some snack counters too. I appreciate their efforts to switch to compostable utensils. In May 2025 it costs only 600円 to visit the zoo. If you plan to do the Lion Bus (500円) on a busy day, I recommend purchasing the tickets online (QR code) in advance, otherwise you have to wait in line and can't choose the boarding time (no online purchases the day of) or risk the tickets running out. If you can't purchase online, then I recommend coming at opening and immediately buying the Lion Bus tickets.

I’ve been living in Japan for 3 years and have already visited Tama Zoo at least three times. I’m probably one of the rare adults who comes here without kids. (゜_゜) But honestly, every time I visit, there’s only one stop for me: the koala house.🐨 Before I met Kirara✨️, I had no idea a koala could look so… human. Those unbelievable double eyelids are unlike anything I’ve ever seen! Until then, I didn’t even know koalas could have double eyelids. Sometimes I wonder if I’m here to watch animals… or if I’m basically attending my idol’s fan meeting.🥹 If you visit Tokyo and don’t know where to go, just come to Tama Zoo and meet Kirara, the koala with the most stunning eyes.✨️ You might end up spending half the day staring like a true fan.🫶 日本語: きららはコアラ界の北川景子だと思います。超かわいい、推しです。(:.´艸`:.)

The overall experience was good. The zoo is about 1.5 hour away from central Tokyo, but the travel was easy. We went on a Tuesday in November, so there were almost no people aside from some Japanese couples and a few elementary school classes. Some of the enclosures were old or being renovated, but fare more of them here new and very well kept. Most animals had a lot of room and were entertained, but some of them (like the snow leopard) had little to no entertainment or coverage (no trees or bushes). A lot if nice picnic areas to enjoy lunch, coffee or a treat. Saw no tourist at our visit. The staff at the shops spoke little to no English, but were very friendly. Definitely recommend it for tourists :)

Buddhist temple

Takahata Fudoson is a serene Buddhist temple complex located in Tokyo's western suburbs. The temple grounds feature buildings from different eras and host cultural events and classes. On the 3rd Sunday of each month, a flea market with around 120 vendors takes place along the shrine road leading to the magnificent complex, offering a quaint, rustic ambiance reminiscent of an old-time market.
I was very impressed and so grateful to have the opportunity to visit here. It is much larger than I had imagined it to be. The temple buildings are well maintained and the connection to Hijikata Toshizo made it even more amazing😯
小鮒デブラ — Google review
A very pleasant place to wander about (especially when the flowers are in bloom). There's a stunning pagoda, a walk up in the hills behind and the general feel of a temple complex. Free to enter (just remember to act respectfully).

Extremely beautiful shrine with an antique sale every third Sunday of the month. We very much enjoyed walking the grounds and seeing the antiques for sale. Please make time to see this beautiful temple! There is free parking but best to get there early to get a spot.

Beautiful hydrangea, and not too many people compared to some of the more central hydrangea festivals in Tokyo. Lots of space to walk around and spend a few hours exploring.
Emily — Google review
Beautiful temple at any season, but best to visit during autumn or hydrangea blooms. Wear good shoes as you'll be "hiking" most of the areas to see. There's also a quiet prayer hall under the pagoda.
Ruth A — Google review
I visited this temple for the Ajisai Matsuri. I was really impressed with the walking trails. There are 88 stone statues around the trails, it feel like a small hike with beautiful green and flowers around . You can even climb up to the observatory spot to have a city view. Will definitely come back in autumn for koyo.
Annie C — Google review
We went to this place for the flea market, didn't know how big or beautiful the temple was going to be. We were so pleasantly impressed, the temple area is reall big and it is extremely beautiful. We are planning to go again to see more of the temple, 2 hrs of flea market and site seeing were not enough
Chololoco888 — Google review
Such an relaxing place. Every time when I visit Tokyo, I stop by here and take a walk around this area. It's near Takahata station and you can find lots of places to eat and rest as well. This temple associates Shinsengumi, it was a family temple of Toshizo Hijikata. He and his friends use to gather at the temple before they departing to Kyoto. Its history is quite old. It says it's originally built around 8th century, and reconstructed in 14th century. So some materials are possibly placed in 14th century.

Specialty Museums
Keio Rail Land is a transportation museum and play area operated by the Japanese company Keio. It offers an inquisitive and fun environment celebrating public transportation, with attractions including a model railroad display, full-scale bus, and various kid-friendly activities. Visitors can experience operating a train in a large-scale simulator, play in a sports course designed like a railroad network, and ride a mini train around old-time train cars displayed outside.
Very fun and immersive experience for young children and their parents. Plenty of hands on opportunities with educational exhibits. If your child gets excited about trains and/or the railway system, this is a great place to visit. There are a few realistic simulators they can try and some cool photo opportunities as well. I would recommend purchasing tickets online ahead of time.
Mark T — Google review
While the place is a great visit for kids who love trains and purarail, it must be noted that strollers have to be parked outside - so bringing babies that need to be in a stroller won't be convenient. Also the tickets at the door are only for entry. Most activity inside requires additional payment and some of those are a limited number of entry tickets per day. Recommend to research the place in advance and plan accordingly.

Get ready for an unforgettable experience at this intriguing two-building museum! Step into the main building, where you'll find convenient ticket machines and a plethora of captivating exhibits. Explore hands-on interactives, jump into creativity at our reservation-only Lego play areas, and engage with fascinating static displays that will spark your imagination! Venture outside to the open-air section, where a world of wonder awaits! Discover more static displays and hop aboard our charming miniature train for a delightful ride. Best of all, you can freely roam between the buildings and the outdoor exhibits, making the exploration truly flexible and fun. When you arrive, you’ll find multilingual automated ticket machines at the entrance, accepting various payment methods for your convenience. Although there aren’t any vending machines inside, fear not! Just a stone's throw away is a handy 7/11 by the ticket gate for snacks and refreshments. Don’t forget to check out the patio dining on the second floor—just bring your own food and enjoy! Beverage vending is also available to keep you refreshed as you discover all the delightful offerings. Plus, the museum is wheelchair accessible, ensuring everyone can join in the adventure! Get ready to dive into a day of excitement and exploration!

It’s the best rail play land for train lover kids! There are trains display, train simulator, train models, play areas with ball pit and playing toy trains etc. It is located right next to HugHug play centre, a big indoor play land for children, and cross the road from Tama Zoological Park. You can easily spend a whole day here with your little ones.
HF C — Google review
Keio Rail-Land offers many attractions, including a large-scale ‘experience simulator’ where visitors can operate a train and learn, touch, and experience how railroads work. Children can also play in complete safety in a special sports course designed in the image of a railroad network. A very popular mini train runs along the perimeter of a fleet old-time train cars displayed outside.
Eric D — Google review
Fun place for kids 2-5. Older kids need more “room” I think. Frankly speaking too small a building for a major public attraction. And for more “room” Tama Zoo is just across the street!:).
Robert — Google review
It’s perfect for kids. They can ride a mini train and also visit old Keio line cars. There is also a scale model of a City and they can drive different trains. Best thing is, it’s right in front of the Tama Zoo!
Marcos C — Google review
This museum is small and geared more towards small children. I was disappointed, but it is not the museum's fault. My expectations were a little larger than what this museum offers. Plus, it's a ways off the beaten track. I would recommend the Railway Museum in Saitama over this one, but if you're in the area with some time to kill, you might as well pay a visit.

Keiō Mogusaen is a serene traditional Japanese garden located on a hill, boasting native plants, a pond, and an 18th-century ambiance. The garden is home to 500 plum trees that bloom in February and March, creating a beautiful sight. Visitors can explore a traditional thatched-roof house and monuments dedicated to Japanese literary figures like Matsuo Basho and Bokusui Wakayama. Bird watchers will appreciate the variety of wild birds found in the garden.
The place is worst to go. The beauty of the garden is changing during the whole year. In winter season (End of February) is a mood of cold, calm of ume flower.

Beautiful garden with a nice pond in the middle on a hill overlooking the valley. In a good day you can see Mount Fuji To get there leave from the south exit of the station , turn right to the Main Street and then just follow the signs. The garden was built in 1715 as a temple garden. In the Meiji period it is known for the poet Wakayama Bokusui who wrote some of his famous short poems after being inspired by the garden. There’s a memorial for him including some of his poems (beautiful ones actually). Admission is 300 JPY foe adult and 100 JPY for children.

A very small museum, but it has many items used to be owned by Toshizo himself, including a sword and his protectors. Only open on the first and the third Sunday of the month. The museum manager is a descendent of Hijikata family who I got to talk to briefly. If you are a fan of Toshizo, you wouldn't want to miss this place.

(Translated by Google) I parked my car in a parking lot near Manganji Station and visited on a Saturday afternoon. Admission fee: 800 yen. It was very interesting to see not only valuable materials about the Shinsengumi, but also anecdotes that only a descendant of Toshizo Hijikata would know. For a limited time, ``favorite swords'' were also on display, and the operator, a descendant of the Hijikata family, was on hand to serve customers. It was a very valuable experience. (Translated by Google) I visited on the first day of Izumi no kami Kanesada's opening to the public. I was nervous as I was traveling alone, but I was so moved when I was handed the ticket to Ai Hijikata, a descendant of the family, at the reception desk...! (I also took a photo later♪ The chants of “Shin Sen Gumi”, “Izumi no Kami”, and “Enomoto Takeaki” are the best😃) The inside is small, but the outside is decorated with things like Inari Shrine, hand-planted bamboo, and a wooden sword used for Tennen Rishin-ryu training, so you can actually swing it (it's very heavy!!) A number of artifacts are on display inside the building, and items are also sold here. (Please take off your shoes and come up!) Once a certain number of people had gathered, Ms. Ai began her explanation, and everyone listened intently. Clafans are also being held to protect these many items! It is also a collaboration with the game Touken Ranbu, and there are stand panels of Kane in some places. Although it was only for a short time, I felt like I was able to receive a piece of Toshizo-san, who has transcended his time, and I headed home excited.

Unagi, a delicacy and a well-guarded secret within the pantheon of Japanese cuisine, finds its ultimate expression at Fujita. As one of the top 100 certified unagi restaurants, this establishment honors tradition with a meticulous preparation. The eels are expertly steamed and then seared to a burnished golden hue over charcoal, after being basted in a venerated, proprietary sauce. A final dusting of sansho pepper awakens the senses with a delicate, fruity aroma, culminating in a dish of unparalleled fluffiness and a deeply complex, sweet-savory flavor.

Even though there were other customers there, I could hear the part-time workers talking loud enough to hear what they were saying. I heard at work that some of the flavors are too authentically French and not to my liking, but I think it's delicious. Chain flavors are too popular and boring. And at 550 yen, it's comparable to other stores, so it's actually a good deal for the quality. It was a bit disappointing that we couldn't eat in, since it would be a bit of a hassle to carry. I was torn between two options, and after I asked the staff for a cake, I decided, "Maybe I should have made the right choice," but when I tasted them, they were exactly what I wanted. 😳✨️ Both were delicious. For me, this is the place to go when I want cake. lol They also have croissants and other breads, which is a plus. They also have baked goods, so the selection is surprisingly diverse. (Translated by Google) This was my first time coming here after I started looking at a lot of things, but the first thing I noticed when I saw Gateau in the showcase was how cheap it was for such a well-regarded store. I felt that this price, including tax, was very well thought out. The staff in charge of sales responded in a gentle and natural manner without making me feel like I was being overly concerned. The wording of Gateau was easy to understand, so I decided on it without much hesitation. This time, I chose three items: Tarte Bagnille (550 yen), Tranche Noisette (500 yen), and Fujiu (720 yen). Tarte bagnille...A mousseline with a firm texture and a strong buttery flavor, with a strong vanilla flavor that spreads afterwards. The consistency of the tart dough at the bottom is not too hard, the flavor of the flour and butter is natural, and the entire gateau is pleasant to eat. Tranchenoisette... Even though it is a firm batakuri, it melts in the mouth smoothly and has a very sharp taste. The flavor of the noisette that goes with it is also very fragrant, and when combined with the batakuri, it becomes 1+1=3 instead of 1+1=2. If this is 500 yen, buy it! Fujiu...I had high expectations since the gateau was named after the restaurant, but I thought the gateau had a flavor that matched those expectations. Despite the moderate sweetness, it has a strong cacao bean flavor. Due to recent price hikes, they seem to have no choice but to use Fuji Oil chocolate, but that didn't make it seem like they were discounting it that much. It had the flavor of the gateau that gives the restaurant its name. Tempura donburi restaurant
At the popular tempura donburi restaurant Shihachi Tendon Ajisai, customers can enjoy a delectable shrimp tempura bowl topped with egg. Despite its price of 1,400 yen, the overall value may not be perceived as high. The establishment boasts a long-standing history and an aesthetically pleasing ambiance. While the staff is limited to two members and could be described as reserved and lacking energy, the food itself is undeniably delicious.
Excellent Tempura & Excellent service I will return many times. Great music also. I recommend this restaurant highly.

I had the Chiki Tama Donburi for 650 yen. The voluminous chicken tempura mixed with the fried egg yolk was delicious. I'm glad it came with miso soup. It would have been nice if they had extra sauce on the table. I'll probably stop by again if I'm in the area. On the menu, we had conger eel tempura bowl and shrimp tempura bowl. The rice was firm, the sauce was not too sweet, the batter was crispy, the shrimp had plenty of moisture, the lotus root was soft and fluffy, and the conger eel was average. The price was reasonable and it was delicious. However, I don't know if it was the batter itself or the frying oil, but I felt that the batter had an unpleasant taste (egg?), so the oil felt persistent, and the progress of chopsticks was slightly slower in the second half. Nestled in the heart of the city, Piccolo Regalo has been a cherished dining spot for over 14 years, earning its place as a favorite among locals. This charming restaurant is celebrated for its unique blend of Italian cuisine with Japanese influences, particularly highlighted by their famous peperoncino dish. Guests can indulge in an array of creatively crafted dishes that showcase a delightful harmony of crispy garlic and rich olive oil, all within an elegantly designed interior that exudes both style and comfort.

(Translated by Google) I saw it on "Solitary Gourmet" and saw good reviews, so I decided to visit. However, perhaps my expectations were too high, and I doubt I'll be back. First, I ordered the Mamma Course, though I'm not sure if they were skimping on lunch. The minestrone appetizer was like baby food? Like hospital food? It was mushy and bland... And it was minestrone, but I wonder if they fry it in olive oil or something? The overwhelming majority of the dishes are oil-free and salt-free. The green appetizer looked like kamaboko, and what surprised me was that the pepperoncino and garlic arrived soaked in oil. Maybe they were burnt (roasted)? It was burnt in a nasty way (everything was bitter), and I thought they'd add oil afterwards, but they didn't, so it was super dry! What is this?! It wasn't tasty at all. I wonder how they could boast such dry pasta as a signature dish. The pizza had a crispy crust. There were a lot of mushrooms, and it seemed Japanese-style, but the slightly fishy sauce made it less tasty. The dessert was also incredibly small, and I wondered if they ordered it from another restaurant. It was especially average. You could get a refill on the coffee after the meal. I don't understand why this place is so popular, and I even started to wonder if the reviews were fake. The price was reasonable, so I feel like I got a good deal for my money. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it, so I think other Italian restaurants or chains have a much more reliable flavor. Making your own might be better. Overall, it was disappointing.
