Bastogne

Bastogne is a town in southern Belgium’s Wallonia region. In central Place McAuliffe, a U.S. Sherman tank and a statue of General McAuliffe are reminders of Bastogne’s role during WWII’s Battle of the Bulge. Outside of town, the star-shaped Mardasson Memorial honors the U.S. soldiers who fought in that battle. The nearby Bastogne War Museum traces the events of WWII through interactive displays and reconstructions.

Specialty Museums
The Bastogne War Museum, located near the Mardasson Memorial in Belgium, is a modern military museum that offers an interactive and immersive experience focusing on World War II and the Battle of the Bulge. Rebuilt and reopened in 2014, it features digital exhibits, short films, and a reconstruction of the forest battlefield to provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the conflict.
Spent a good 3 hours + here, so make sure you give yourself enough time. An immersive museum full of history, story telling and facts. Follow 4 characters as they take you through the years of WW2. Headsets available for an assortment of languages. Entrance ticket covers 3 sites and can be used over 7 days so no need to rush! Three ‘shows’ with 3D-glasses, special effects and wonderful animation really bring the whole period of WW1 and WW2 to reality. Sad tales are told so bring a hanky 🥹 The generation 45 production I found very interesting/emotional. Covers two soldiers journeys post war. I sadly lost my grandad in the conflict (buried in Belgium), so it really made me appreciate even more so what I lost from my life as his granddaughter 😢 Staff friendly, plenty of toilets available, cafe with hot/cold drinks and basic food has outdoor and indoor seating. Monument to the Americans quite powerful to see. We were unable to walk within it as it is currently being renovated. Parking flat and plentiful. Every vehicle costs £5 to park so a bit pricey for motorbikes, but it all goes to a good cause.

The museum was great as expected but what actually suprised me was the quality of food in the bistro. I expected it to be just a regular bistro not very good food and really expensive, the expensive part was true but I was really suprised that the food was actually good i reccomend almost everything on the menu exept for the sandwitches whitch are as expected bland but other than that its really tasty. If you are hungry after going through the museum dont waste your time trying to find a restaurant just eat there trust me you wont regret it.

Great museum. Bring a sandwich and water because if you are interested in this topic, you will stay for over 3 hours. Excellent exhibition of vehicles, weapons and equipment, as well as other legacies. If you don't bring food, there are restaurants as well as a ww2 themed restaurant. The exhibition also includes films from the war period. A very comprehensive museum, it will not leave fans indifferent. It is not bad to buy tickets online, and there is also the possibility of buying tickets for 3 museums, which I recommend. Parking for a vehicle is 5 euros.
Radovan Z — Google review
Absolutely worth visiting. Wish we had had more time to be able to take in the whole museum. We had limited time as this was an impromptu stop. Make sure you have several hours to be able to spend here.
Verne D — Google review
Its good, some nice theatre settings. I was expecting more Bastogne/Foye specific, the details and notty gritty. It covers the whole war from 38-45 which is good if you don't know, then a secrion in the middle for the bulge.

A Must-Visit: The Emotional Powerhouse of the Bastogne War Museum Visiting the Bastogne War Museum was an unforgettable highlight of my trip, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. This museum, dedicated to the Battle of the Bulge, delivers a deeply moving experience that blends history, emotion, and education in a way that resonates long after you leave. From the moment you step in, the immersive exhibits pull you into the harsh realities of World War II. The museum’s use of personal stories, interactive displays, and authentic artifacts—like the chillingly preserved tanks outside—brings the Battle of Bastogne to life. What struck me most was the audio-guided tour, where you follow the perspectives of four characters: a soldier, a civilian, a nurse, and a resistance fighter. Their stories made the history feel raw and human, stirring emotions I didn’t expect. The museum doesn’t shy away from the war’s brutality but balances it with tales of courage and resilience, honoring the sacrifices made in and around Bastogne. The layout is intuitive, and the attention to detail is remarkable, making it accessible for history buffs and casual visitors alike. For anyone visiting Belgium, this is more than a museum—it’s an emotional journey into a pivotal moment in history. Plan for a few hours, as you’ll want time to absorb it all. I left with a deeper appreciation for the past and a renewed sense of gratitude. Highly, highly recommended!

A very well laid out museum with many small artefacts and a few military vehicles. There are 4 characters that talk through the headsets narrating their journey through WW2 which brings an interesting perspective. I thought that it was a bit expensive for what it is. There is a lovely cafe on site and a well stocked museum shop. Motorcycle parking is free. Access for disabled is very good.

A Thoughtful and Unfiltered Look at WWII History As an American visitor, I found the Bastogne War Museum refreshingly honest—no sugarcoating, no censorship. It presents the complexity of WWII with depth and integrity, offering exhibits in multiple languages, both written and audio. The ticket includes an audio headset that auto-plays as you move through the museum. The narration follows four fictional characters whose wartime perspectives add emotional context. While this concept is creative, I found the constant audio distracting when trying to read the exhibits. The only part of the audio tour I truly enjoyed was in the immersive theatre sections, where it complemented the visuals beautifully. The museum itself is well-curated, with rich timelines, authentic artifacts, and a clear historical arc. What stood out most to me was the focus on post-war Europe—something many museums overlook. The Generation 45 section was especially powerful, shedding light on the Cold War era and the human cost of division behind the Iron Curtain. Though the ticket price might seem steep, the experience is absolutely worth it. My only real critiques: the dim lighting made some exhibits hard to read, and the audio storytelling, while ambitious, didn’t always enhance the visit. Overall, a well-executed museum that respects the gravity of history while offering a compelling, multi-layered experience.

Military Museums
Bastogne Barracks is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts, particularly those fascinated by World War II and the pivotal Battle of the Bulge. This remarkable museum offers an immersive experience with guided tours and engaging exhibits that showcase the harrowing events of this significant conflict. Visitors can marvel at impressive displays of armored tanks, which serve as a testament to the military strategies employed during this tumultuous time.
Our experience at the Bastonge Barracks was incredible. The woman working the front desk (I am sad I didnt catch her name) was a tremendous help. She provided maps and all the information we needed to make it a great visit. (She also made some great restaurant recommendations andncalled to make sure one restaurant was still open late in the afternoon on New Years Eve - above and beyond!) We took the tour of the warehouses with the restored vehicles and weaponry of WWII, the museum, and the foxholes in the Ardennes Forest. Every detail was excellently portrayed and researched. I learned many things not previously known to me regarding this corner of the war. I was flooded with emense gratitude for brave men and women who took a stand and fought during WWII. Even today, Bastonge is a quiet, small town. I can only imagine what it looked like 81 yrs ago. The most moving thing for me to witness was the foxholes in the forest. They have been maintained throughout the years to be free of debris; however they looked so authentic for the cover they might have provided an American Soldier. It was a powerful, moving, and hallowed ground. To know men were fighting and dying in this forest, in weather much like we experienced (cold, with trees frosted by ice fog) brought me to tears. I am grateful such men lived.

Awesome, better than I thought it would be. Their variety of equipment was amazing. The main display hall was kinda dark. The military guide was very knowledgeable and friendly you could tell he really enjoyed his job
Tyrus K — Google review
This is a fantastic WWII museum with various displays both inside and outside. It isn't very big overall, and you could easily see everything in an hour if you wanted to, but I took a little longer as I like to take my time and read about stuff. If you like WWII history and you're in or near Bastogne, be sure to check this place out, and if you like to take your time, give yourself a couple hours here!
Nate — Google review
Awesome display! If you want an extensive overview of military hardware, this is the place to be! The sliding doors of hal 1 open and you are greeted by the smell of engine oil and grease, AND a 152mm pointing right at you :) It's really worth every euro of the entrance fee, MUCH visit when in Belgium (or central Europe for that matter ;) )
M E — Google review
Really nice exponation. ISU 152, IS 200, several Sherman incl different guns. Lots of howitzers and trucks. I was really satisfied with their collection. Worth a visit!
Mario M — Google review
The best museum in Bastogne (must see), with a lot of armed vehicles and tanks in perfect condition. They've got vehicles from the Soviet Union, France, England, America and Germany.
Drangleiker — Google review
The “Vehicle Restoration Center” is a real gem. There are two large buildings with an amazingly diverse set of vehicles and other equipment. And there is a third, smaller area with some artillery pieces. In places, the lighting could have been better. Signage was pretty good overall. There was a very basic but adequate bathroom facility. There was no cafe or vending machines that I saw. The confusing part for us was that you had to park on the street, fairly far down from the entrance, and then walk quite a distance just to get back to the entrance/ticket booth. You can not drive directly into the grounds, though there is a provision for handicapped people to drive in. Bottom line, this is well worth the entrance fee.
James — Google review
Would have had a better score but the main hall was closed when we went. If you like military hardware, not just tanks, this is worth a visit. And there is an excellent Virtual Reality view of the inside of a Sherman Tank.

Located in Bastogne, the Mardasson Memorial is a striking tribute to American soldiers who were injured or lost their lives during the Battle of the Bulge. Designed by architect Georges Dedoyard, this imposing structure takes the form of a 12-meter tall five-pointed American star with points extending 31 meters and a central atrium measuring 20 meters in diameter. The memorial offers fantastic panoramic views of the battle areas and features informative maps detailing the movements of German and Allied forces.
Didn't visit the museum just had a nice wander around the monument /crypt and took in the beautiful views over the belgian countryside. Impressive monument- just a shame you can't climb up the spiral staircase to the top anymore... Also had a coffee in the cafe adjoining the museum. Friendly service.
Ness R — Google review
A fitting tribute to all the American troops who gave their lives. The memorial is free entry but the museum that occupies the same site is 22€ per person that added to the 5€ parking charge it does start to become expensive. The memorial and grounds are well worth a visit if you want to pay your respects for free and the first 20 mins parking is free.
Deb L — Google review
Two years ago they were busy with the restoration, and now it's complete (although we couldn't discover where they restored it). Overall it is worth a visit when you are visiting the museum or if you are visiting Bastogne. It is a large monument to commemorate the Second World War.

Images from the Mardasson Memorial. Honoring the memory of American soldiers who were wounded or killed in the Battle of the Bulge. We should never forget. The museum was closed, but this monument brought tears to my sarcastic, cynical eyes. A great way to end our trip.

The Mardasson Memorial in Bastogne is striking, respectful, and deeply thought-provoking, honoring those who fought in the war. Visiting is definitely worthwhile, a powerful and moving experience. The upper deck wasnt open when we were there.

Its sadly closed for renovation but it has to be done so I dont see the reason for all of these 1 star reviews. But other than that its great its really majestic commemorating the sacrifices of thousands of soliders i would reccomend to visit
Dag 5 — Google review
Impressive monument, but at the time it is closed and cordoned off, the crypt is open thou, sign mentions renovation should have been completed last year and I see reviews here mentions it has been open since

The movies (3) was very good, but they tell the story in a too complicated way. Hard to follow as an adult and the children barely keep up, even though they know history and have seen some of the related films and series.

Located in the impressive Chasseurs Ardennais officers mess from 1936, the 101st Airborne Museum provides a comprehensive look at the Siege of Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge. Housed across four floors, this museum features immersive exhibits with authentic artifacts such as weapons, uniforms, documents, and civilian objects from that era. It also includes an underground bunker as one of its main attractions.
A great piece of history in Bastogne. The exhibition is amazing; there are hundreds of objects from the era. Very well organized and displayed. And the bombing experience is really good!
Matias J — Google review
Amazing museum. Everything was done really well and wax models are so life like. Exceeded my expectations with lot of video and audio effects. Not just old stuff from WW2 this exhibition shows so much more.
Petri L — Google review
This is a great museum. The exhibits were well displayed and the dioramas were excellent. Well worth the 14Euro entry fee. Free parking nearby. No need to visit the expensive tourist trap Bastogne War Museum, who even have the nerve to charge for parking.
Stuart S — Google review
If you are a fan of WWII, you must see attraction. If not, as well, you must see attraction. Located on 3 floors, there are so many things from WW2 and showing 101st Airborne story. All the manikins look like alive, well presented scenes of fighting and other situations. Bunker is something different, I must say.

Nestled just ten minutes from Bastogne, Bois Jacques is a poignant reminder of the fierce battles fought during the Battle of the Bulge. This serene forest, now a pine plantation, holds remnants of history with foxholes dug by the brave soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division over 75 years ago.
Bois Jacques is a powerful and quiet place to visit. Walking through the forest, you can see the remains of the foxholes from World War II. It’s very moving to think about the soldiers who fought here. The area is peaceful and full of history. A great spot for anyone interested in World War II or wanting to pay their respects. You need a ticket to get in and you can get an interactive AR app to learn more about events that happened here.
Katerina S — Google review
An amazing and touching immersion into the decisive days of the Ardennes battle and the liberation war. A genuine experience in the foxholes of the brave men who stood there, fought and gave their lives.
Fadi H — Google review
Very well kept, foxholes still in tact. Shame that you have to pay to enter, apparently it’s just a recent decision to include this site in the War Museum ticket package. I went on a sunny Sunday afternoon and it was not crowded at all. Maybe 3-4 other people there.
Reihana M — Google review
What a great experience. Downloading their app is totally worth it. It feels like you are in the battlefield with the american soldiers.
Ioanna N — Google review
Part of WW2 history, also very picturesque, worth reading up on the history of the place in order to enhance your visit
AL N — Google review
I used to love visiting the Bois Jacques, to reflect. What a shame that it has become what it has. Today was my 4th time visiting Bastogne, and the Bois Jacques, my last visit dating back to 2022. I am disappointed. The Bois Jacques used to be one of those places that you needed to be particularly interested in a part of history to know of. It used to be open, no gate, no fences. One could visit it at any time of the day, or year. The fact that you now have to pay to access this wood is, for me, disgraceful. Not only does it now attract the wrong people -- those wishing to tick things off of their list of places visited -- but they are all on their phones. Watching a very underwhelming walkthrough of the area. I found both them, and the app, quite disrespectful towards the men that suffered and died there. Attempting to make this into one of those 'experiences' is not right.
Edward J — Google review
Interesting experience with augmented reality taking you to the very place where war was taking place - and showing you the "foxhole reality" in your crll phone. Part of the Bastogne War Museum ticket.
Joanna B — Google review
Not monitored by the museum so people’s kids with electric toys were racing cars inside the fenced area disturbing the memorial. Also, the app tour only mentioned soldiers from the HBO show and no other soldiers who fought there making the area feel like a Hollywood attraction rather than a memorial and place of larger historical value.

We had an amazing meal, two pizzas (too big for the plates) and two delicious royal rigatoni pastas. We were seated quickly even though the restaurant was packed. Nice service. Absolutely recommend this restaurant to everyone visiting Bastogne.
Linda P — Google review
This review is for the restaurant/pizzeria only. The only reason for two stars instead of one, is the food, which was actually fairly decent. As for the experience, it was ruined by a few factors, mainly, a huge, extremely rude and noisy group, which was apparently friends with the owner lady (she stopped by the table a few times and joined in the yelling and boisterous laughter). Boorish, extremely loud and completely unrestrained by the owner, these people acted like they owned the restaurant, at the expense of the rest of us - two other parties - that had to endure their presence. The owner did not do anything to restrain said guests, in fact, as mentioned, she seemed to encourage their behavior. Furthermore, at one point, all waitresses (yes, all) left, and the only person left to service the remaining customers was the owner herself. As a result, service, which was slow and fairly poor before, was after this point basically nonexistent. To top it off, we have never waited so long for a pizza in our restaurant-going life. There are plenty of restaurants around the center of Bastogne, most at the same prices, and I see no reason to waste time and money at Giorgi. A very disappointing experience.

At Il Canto, a popular Italian restaurant, the lasagna is exceptionally large and delicious. The waitstaff is friendly, although there may be some delays due to shift changes. The prices are affordable for those on a budget, especially if you split the enormous lasagna. Additionally, both the food and service receive high praise. Even non-French speakers can feel comfortable here as the staff readily switches to English.
Atmosphere is nothing special. However, the food and service more than make up for that! Il Canto is far more than pizza. We enjoyed the cheese fondue. They also have a meat fondue.

most important: cash or creditcard only! what an experience, amazing service with a smile and some humor. creates an amazing vibe for the whole place. with on the house bruschetta when you go sit down and an on the house liquor for digestion when you're done eating. the quality of the food is really fine and worth the wait. it took a bit of time to get some dishes but like I said. worth the wait. happy I visited this restaurant. going home with a full belly and a smile. keep in mind that you only can pay with cash or creditcard, this isn't shown very well before you come in and you will see it on the menu.

Our meal was delicious and timely! We had the charcuterie board with cocktails, followed by pasta entrees, and then dessert with a pour of scotch. Alla Dolce Vita is among the top dining establishments in Bastogne, renowned for its delightful culinary offerings. It receives an impressive average rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars from a total of 328 patrons. The restaurant is particularly known for its immense, flavorful, and distinctive pizzas. Huge, tasty, unique pizzas. We had a pizza with duck and truffle, another with pata negra and gorgonzola. A third with gruyere and salami. Not salty, not fat. Nice thin. Eat 3 pizze with 4 people. You would not expect to find the best pizza in the world (not unlikely) in Bastogne! Service could be better, a bit unorganised and - it was no problem - but they got our drinks order wrong twice :). Only cash payment. Nice seating outside on the terrace.

Terrible. Pizza with a raw egg in the middle (after a loooong wait), amateur personnel not speaking any English, boss smoking cigars with his friends inside (just a meter away from pizza preparation table) to suffocate guests, disgusting. Worst pizzeria ever (I visited hundreds worldwide) 🙄

If you find yourself wandering the charming streets of Bastogne, make sure to stop by Le Maxim's for a delightful dining experience. On New Year's Eve, when most places were closing their doors, this gem graciously welcomed us in as the only customers. The warm and friendly staff made us feel right at home despite a slight language barrier, sharing laughs and good cheer as they served up excellent coffees and hot chocolate.
Family and I were walking around Bastogne looking for a place to get a warm beverage and food. Everything was closing because of New Years Eve. The fine folks at Le Maxim's graciously stayed open and allowed us to order anything on the menu. The food was awesome, very well prepared, and presented nicely. The service was great. The employees were gracious and despite a little language barrier, they were helpful, friendly and shared some laughs. Upon leaving, they wished us a Happy New Year. This a must stop and eat at restaurant!

We were saved by this restaurant and the owner letting us in. Almost every other restaurant was closing New Year's Eve. He welcomed us in and we were the only customers. They were a warm and charming staff! The coffees and hot chocolate were excellent. There was a delicious appetizer offered of prosciutto, bread, pickles and mustard. The main entrées were fresh, hot, and delicious. What a gem in the center of Bastogne! They also hold a Guinness Book of World Records title. We met 2 of the guys that were on that record breaking team. It was delightful!

If you're planning a visit to Bastogne and looking for a dining experience that combines history with culinary delight, Le Maxim's Restaurant is a stop you shouldn't miss. Last week, during a battlefield tour, I had the pleasure of dining at this charming establishment. Opting for a lighter lunch, I passed on the Steak, which seemed a bit much for midday, and instead savoured their Tuna Salad baguette accompanied by a generous serving of fries. It was a decision well made; the meal was not only delicious but also offered great value for money. Situated conveniently in the heart of the city, Le Maxim's boasts a location that's as appealing as its menu. The restaurant itself radiates cleanliness and comfort, making it a welcoming space for both the weary traveller and the eager foodie. What made the experience truly memorable was the warmth and friendliness of the staff. Their attentive service added to the overall enjoyment of the meal. The fusion of a historical setting with top-notch cuisine makes Le Maxim's a gem in Bastogne. It's a place where the echoes of the past meet the flavours of the present. I left with a content heart and a satisfied palate, already looking forward to my next visit. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply in search of a good meal, Le Maxim's will not disappoint. The hist also spoke very good English.

The food wasn't too good. Paid 22 euros for just a hamburger and 5 lettuce leaves. Staff doesn't speak english nor make any effort to communicate. I've been there only once, but I have a wonderful memory. The setting is nice, the cuisine is delicious, and the atmosphere is cozy. It's a pleasant place for a romantic evening. It's particularly recommended for meat enthusiasts. I especially recommend their specialty: pork knuckle with mustard sauce. It's a large portion of tender and tasty meat.
Such a great place to have lunch or dinner. They only accept cash though. We tried frogs for the first time and it was great. Then we had burgers which were HUGE. Le Nut’s is a must-visit restaurant in the heart of Bastogne, known for its rich historical significance and strong ties to World War II. This popular eatery was a favorite hangout of Vince Speranza, a U.S. Army veteran of the 101st Airborne Division, who became famous for his wartime experience during the Battle of Bastogne. One of the highlights on the menu is the Vince Speranza Airborne Beef Stew, best enjoyed with an Airborne Blonde beer served in a signature helmet-shaped mug—an iconic souvenir available in local shops. The restaurant is not only known for its delicious food but also for its unique atmosphere, filled with military memorabilia and photographs of famous members of the Band of Brothers. Due to its popularity, Le Nut’s can get quite busy, but the friendly staff ensure a welcoming experience. Keep in mind that the restaurant only accepts cash, so be sure to come prepared. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking for a great meal with a fascinating backstory, Le Nut’s offers an unforgettable dining experience in Bastogne.

Do not come here if you are a tourist on a short time schedule! My friend and I sat for an hour and 15 minutes waiting for a salad and a burger. Some people on our tour were not served at all. After having told the staff we needed to leave due to our bus leaving soon, they rolled their eyes and said it was coming soon. This place needs an overhaul in management and a more competent kitchen staff. The food was of terribly low quality and extremely overpriced. Definitely a tourist trap. If you come here, only come here for a beer. The food and service are absolutely horrific. Also, this place is cash-only so we had to walk around town looking for an ATM which is extremely inconvenient considering this is a tourist town. The only thing Nuts about this place is the wait time!

Had a beer and my friend had a sandwich. It is a bit tourist trappy. The location was perfect as it was right in front of a car show that happened that weekend. Probably worth snapping a photo here or a quick drink or seat. But find somewhere else to go eat and spend more time if you want to try local culture. Also the name is a classic reference to the American general who refused to surrender. He just said, “Nuts” when asked to surrender by Germans during battle of bulge in Bastogne.

A must visit if you are in Bastogne! Good food, great beers. Try the Airborne beer or General Patton beer, both taste superb. Nicely decorated interiors. Definitely will be back here sometime!

A great and funny place in Bastogne. I'm not often in the area, but I'll greatly make a detour. Good food. Also one of the rare places where you get good French fries. :-)

After that breakfast we vere full for all day 👏 Delicious soup of the day, tasty burger filled with sweet, baked onion served with really good french fries and good omlette (if the bacon would be more crispy, that would be perfect!). Also very nice service, speaking in English 😊 Thanks!

Cute place. Food was good. Not great but good. However, price on the receipt did not match the in person menu or online menu. When my husband brought it up to the owner (as it was a big difference) he said they recently updated their prices but not the menu. If this is the case I'd suggest letting the customer know upon ordering as this is a cash only establishment and when you're pricing what you're ordering and then have to run to the atm because there is a 30€ difference its not ok.
