Maritime museum
Museums
Zeeland maritime muZEEum, located in the center of Vlissingen, offers a fascinating insight into the maritime history of Zeeland and the Delta Works. Housed in historic townhouses, this museum is engaging for visitors of all ages with its unique exhibitions, collections, and educational programs. The museum provides a glimpse into Zeeland's sailing culture and Dutch involvement in the Transatlantic slave trade.
A great museum! Can easily spend 1-2 hours here. Definitely recommend the free audio tour. Good place to bring kids. Lots of interactive activities to keep everyone happy and interested.
Claire D — Google review
Sure! Here's the English translation: It’s one of those unexpected but amazing places you come across in Vlissingen. It’s a very well-curated museum, with a wonderful display of the maritime world of the Zeeland region. It’s highly interactive and a real pleasure to explore.
Edwin F — Google review
Very entertaining and informative museum. I really recommend the free audio tour. The museum isn't very big (~1.5 hours), but I feel like kids will like the way the exhibitions are presented, with some interactive activities. The building itself is relatively old, but inside the museum is pretty modern (including some free lockers). The view from the 'small tower' on top of the building of Vlissingen is nice as well.
Tim P — Google review
I enjoyed visiting Zeeland maritime muZEEum. The exhibits were fascinating, especially the detailed ship models and stories about the region’s maritime history. It’s a great place to learn and immerse yourself in Zeeland’s rich connection to the sea. Definitely worth a visit!
Elizabeth A — Google review
It's easy to see why the muZEEum earned a European Museum of the Year nomination in 2004. The building itself is impressive, and the interactive exhibits are cleverly designed, making for an enjoyable 90-minute visit. The museum focuses on Dutch heroes and celebrities of the 17th and 18th centuries, including Michiel de Ruyter and the Lampsins brothers. However, I left feeling uneasy. While the museum acknowledges their involvement in the slave trade, it downplays the brutal reality of their business dealings. These figures were part of a system that forcibly transported an estimated 600,000 enslaved Africans to the Caribbean, with countless individuals perishing during the horrific Middle Passage and in the brutal conditions of the plantations. Ships sailed regularly from Vlissingen and other Dutch ports first to Africa to load their human cargo and take them to the Americas and returning with the exotic goods that fueled the Dutch economy and the fortunes of men like de Ruyter and the Lampsins. While this history isn't entirely absent from the museum's narrative, it lacks a crucial human rights perspective, failing to adequately convey the immense suffering and injustice inflicted upon the enslaved people. Ultimately, this omission left me disappointed.

Wonderful place to visit. You can see pretty much everything in less than an hour. Do not skip the introductory video in the beginning of the route. It is a masterpiece. Also the view from the top is worth seeing. Free for museum card holders.

Zoos & Aquariums
Zoo
Iguana Reptile Zoo, situated in the heart of town, is Europe's largest covered reptile zoo. Boasting a diverse collection of over 500 live amphibians, reptiles, and insects from around the globe, visitors can marvel at an array of creatures including frogs, lizards, crocodiles, snakes, turtles, scorpions and tarantulas. Housed in a historic building with various terrariums showcasing these fascinating animals in their habitats.
Reptile zoo/rescue like no other, worth the visit ! Animals in such good shape (other than pre-existing condition before rescue ofc)! Clean habitats, intriguing pletora of species! Fully indoor and definetly big compared to any other reptilezoo.
Feedra M — Google review
Was very nice visiting here, and I would recommend it. The employee at the counter was extremely welcoming and lovely, however we did think the terrariums are run down and on the small side. The animals look good, but I hope there could be some renovations and real plants. The outside does not do it justice! Very welcoming
Jodie O — Google review
The zoo is located in a historic building in the heart of the city, which gives it a quite unique setting. There are many of the biggest reptiles, amphibians and insects in there that you will ever see. We were extremely lucky to witness one of the giant pythons move around in its terrarium - it was amazing to watch for the kids and us as well. There are multiple toilets on the route you are taking, and also snack machines offering extremely fair prices for snacks and drinks. The lady at the entry was extremely friendly and helpful.
Rising R — Google review
The zoo was setup in a historical building. It hosts very interesting reptiles. Most of them looked quite happy in their houses (I am not sure how a reptile can look happy though) still it is sad to see them in captivity. The exception is the albino piton. It could not survive in wild nature so it is better for it to be kept there. There are also a few skeletons in the exhibition and the one belonged to a piton was really impressive. You cannot enter for free with your museum cards. Get ready to pay around 8 euros per person. There is a small discount for kids.
Bülent K — Google review
WORST ZOO I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. If you want to support animals being mistreated then go ahead. Most of the cages were tiny (even when there were 5+ animals in there), pretty much all of the plants were fake (plastic), there was water missing in the cage with the big turtles, there was no real sand or mud in the cages (it was plastic). I could continue this list, i won’t. I also could have taken more pictures. We left early because we couldn’t handle it. I honestly do not know how this is legal.
Betty G — Google review
Lots of animals to see. Rescuing abandoned animals is a great thing to do. Works have like to get more info on the animals, though most have at least a species tag.
Georg F — Google review
Yes, it does have a big collection of various reptiles and even uncommon ones at that, but we thought that "the largest indoor reptile zoo in Europe" would have a bigger wow-factor. To put it into perspective, I would be curious how much larger the zoo is compared to reptilian sections of other zoos. So, for me, the statement "the largest indoor reptile zoo in Europe" raised expectations a bit too much, if I'm honest. Nevertheless, it is informative, there are some really special animals and stories in the exhibits, and overall it is a great option to spend time there with family. Can recommend it, especially if someone is into lizards (and similar), snakes, etc. 4/5!
Daniel R — Google review
This place is a wonderful addition to anyones day in Vlissingen. The animals are very well cared of and have big and beautiful habitats with everything the animal needs. The structure is remarkable, every habitat has been placed in the building in a clever way to still make sure the original features of the building are showing!

Beach
Nollestrand is a beautiful beach located in Vlissingen, offering visitors the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a day by the sea. The beach boasts fine sand and clear waters, making it an ideal destination for beach lovers. While some seaweed may be present due to strong waves, the overall experience is still enjoyable. Visitors can also find colorful huts available for rent if they wish to stay nearby.
Nice place, sandy beach. It was a little cold to swim, but very cool!

Coming from a country with lots of beautiful beaches (Philippines), i can say that Zeeland beach is one of the beaches that is worth visiting in europe. Unlike other beaches that i have visited in EU, this one here has fine sand and clear water; but it can still improve -- seaweeds floating around so much in the afternoon due to strong waves. If you dont have a hotelroom nearby, it would be nice to rent one of these colorful huts. Dont forget to take picture of them too, they are like the "icon" of Zeeland 😉

Vlissingen Beach presents a breathtaking vista, characterized by its dual-sided view that seamlessly merges natural beauty with architectural elegance. Flanked by striking buildings that embody both modern design and historical charm, the beach offers a unique atmosphere where leisure meets sophistication. The gentle waves lapping at the shore create a serene backdrop, while the surrounding structures enhance the coastal landscape, inviting visitors to indulge in a picturesque experience.

Nice beach, clean, not many seashell, so it doesn't hurt the feet, no dog allowed in the summer, there was many jellyfishs in the water but they're quite harmless. We were there when the tide is low, so it's perfect for small kids.

It's fine, the beach is quite clean, although the water quality is not great. I don't know if this is a blue flag beach but the region should put more effort in improving the water quality, for us humans and the environment !

If you're a marine enthusiast or simply love exploring historical sites, Dokje Of Perry in Vlissingen is a must-visit. This remarkable dry dock, dating back to the early 18th century, holds the title of being the oldest surviving dry dock not just in the Netherlands but also in all of Western Europe. Constructed between 1704 and 1705 by English architect John Perry, it has been beautifully restored and now stands as a national monument.

De Gevangentoren B.V., located in Vlissingen, offers a unique dining experience in a former prison tower with stunning views of the Westerschelde. Whether you choose to sit on the terrace, in the conservatory, or inside the tower room, you'll be treated to spectacular vistas of large ships sailing past. The restaurant's elevated and semi-circular design provides a wide panoramic view, making it an ideal spot for enjoying a romantic dinner or watching the sunset.
Very nice place. Excellent sea view. Gourmet style dishes, but plentiful. Between food and drinks approximately €50 per person.

We were guests in summer and all was fine. We returened today during winter time for a hot drink and coffee. We had a menue at our table saying- untill 17uur. We had to change the table and on this other, was a second card with different -higher- prices. The price finally charged for an appletarte was 5,50. It said in the card we were given To order (untill 17uur) 4,50 euro. We had only One slagroom, instead if three slagroom which would have been included. We were charged all three. When we asked, why we have to pay the evening price at 16 uur and the Card tells a different price, we where told, that the owner wants it this way and the lower price does not exist anymore. The lady in charge was very friendly to locals, not to foreigners. As you have to pay inside, I don‘t know how much the other customers were charged. Its not about the 1 Euro p.P. Its about the way we were treated, that we will not return and can not recommand it further.
Theasian T — Google review
I am shocked by the treatment we received. I know the place, although its not cheap, the food and the location is really amazing so I took my guests here. We ordered all the courses, wines, etc and it was time for a desert. We liked the one we ordered then asked for another plate of desert. We informed the waiter, then someone else came, who looked like the manager of the waiters, and he rebuked us in a very impolite way saying "i heard you ordered another desert, but this is not acceptable we are not a tapas restaurant, you cannot order food at a second time, you had to order them together." I was shocked and blushed in front of my guests. We were being punished for enjoying the food we ate there, which we pay quite a lot of money. What's more, there is nothing wrong with the tapas restaurants-why looking down to them! If this is very important for this place, they had to write it on their menu, saying that the guests have only one chance to order meals! Unacceptable kind of behaviour which doesnt match the quality of this restaurant. Never going there again nor advising to others- Although my highest compliments to the chef-he/she is really amazing.
Aylin Ö — Google review
We had dinner here last night and it was delicious The only thing that bothered me was the fact that the server brought me my wine and it didn't taste good. I asked for a different wine and received that but ended up paying for both wines....unfortunate Our server wasn't all too friendly either, that's a shame. Won't be going there again
Dianne A — Google review
Can't tell you about the room, just about the restaurant. They took every care in the world, and the menu was slightly adapted due to an allergy - something we notified them upfront about, and were pleased to hear we didn't have to remind them [or the chef] about this - oftentimes you do. We chose to go in blind and go for the 5 course chef's choice menu, instead of the a la carte options. The menu was inspirational, well seasoned, and very varied. It offered a nice array of different vegetables as well. Portion sizes, especially considering the fact that it was 5 courses, were opulant. Especially as it came at only 65 EUR/person! The menu we were served was: - An amuse-bouche of airated tom kha kai soup with a bottom of curried chicken - Cevice of macarel, with avocado puree, radish, daikon, red onion, garlic mayo, fried buckweat and a tomato jus/olive oil sauce -light pumpkin veloute with diced bits of raw pumpkin, pumpkin seeds and local grey northsea prawns - Red mullet with langoustine, on a bed of samphire and tomato risotto, pumpkin, purple cauliflower, a sweet crisp and a white wine cream sauce - Farm-fresh duck breast with fondant potatoes, seasonal roasted vegetables, and a sauce made from duck, and oranges - a desert of plums in various ways: regular fresh plums, pickled plums, plum sorbet, dehydrated plum sugar shards, and a quenelle of dark chocolate ganache, finished with a plum syrup The surprise of the day for us was definitely the cevice. It's a dish we were always interested in trying but never had a chance to before now. It was delicious, with the fattiness of the fish and avocado, contrasting wonderfully with the sour elements. The red mullet dish was also more than delicious, but the crisp was too sweet for our liking - even though that's just a small point of our personal taste VS that of the chef's. - The duck, too, was very delicious. Even though some larger parts of fat weren't rendered and therefor we had to cuts bits away. The potato could use a bit more TLC as well, but as this was one of the replacement ingredients mentioned earlier, we hold zero ill thought aboit it- all in all very succesful, with a delicious sauce. Also, again, after having had a veryvdecent portion of fish, this was also a very decent portion of duck!!!

A compact and nice restaurant with tasty cuisine and a good selection of drinks. I ordered a meat main dish and affogato — both were super tasty. Also, great service. It should have a great sea view, but unfortunately, we visited it after sunset and couldn’t see much in the dark.

A lovely restaurant near the beach that provides delicious food with a perfect view to watch ships pass by on the sea 🚢🍸 During our 1-week stay in Vlissingen NL, we dined there twice; both times we were perfectly happy with our choices of food, drinks and desserts. I had the vegan Sweet Potato Lentil Curry both times, and it was delicious. Highly recommend! I also had the Rubarb-Strawberry Crumble (vegan), which was also very good!🍓

I've been here twice. Once for lunch and once for dinner. For lunch I had the BLVD sandwich, which was delicious and perfectly balanced. I enjoyed every bite. Brasserie Blvd offers a great dinning experience too with one of the best views in town. We ordered the fish of the day, a perfectly cooked Dorade fish with a steam potato and carrots salad and a nice bowl of fries. We also ordered a fish soup, which was very tasty an fair in size given it was a starter. Prices are also fine. Hot meals are a bit pricey, but considering location, it is fair.

A lovely restaurant in the centre of Vlissingen. We had booked a table in advance on their terrace, a big space with lots of comfortable seating ✨️ There were a few options that caught my eye on their menu (thank you for so many veggie and vegan options!), but eventually I chose their "Indian Dinner": Buttermilk Chicken with Basmati rice, raita, mango chutney, mini samosas, papadum, salad, and naan bread. It was very delicious, I highly recommend 🩷 If it hadn't been our last day in Vlissingen, I would have loved to go back a second time.
