History Museums
Zeeland maritime muZEEum, located in the center of Vlissingen, offers a fascinating insight into the maritime history of Zeeland and the Delta Works. Housed in historic townhouses, this museum is engaging for visitors of all ages with its unique exhibitions, collections, and educational programs. The museum provides a glimpse into Zeeland's sailing culture and Dutch involvement in the Transatlantic slave trade.
A great museum! Can easily spend 1-2 hours here. Definitely recommend the free audio tour. Good place to bring kids. Lots of interactive activities to keep everyone happy and interested.
Claire D — Google review
Sure! Here's the English translation: It’s one of those unexpected but amazing places you come across in Vlissingen. It’s a very well-curated museum, with a wonderful display of the maritime world of the Zeeland region. It’s highly interactive and a real pleasure to explore.
Edwin F — Google review
Very entertaining and informative museum. I really recommend the free audio tour. The museum isn't very big (~1.5 hours), but I feel like kids will like the way the exhibitions are presented, with some interactive activities. The building itself is relatively old, but inside the museum is pretty modern (including some free lockers). The view from the 'small tower' on top of the building of Vlissingen is nice as well.
Tim P — Google review
I enjoyed visiting Zeeland maritime muZEEum. The exhibits were fascinating, especially the detailed ship models and stories about the region’s maritime history. It’s a great place to learn and immerse yourself in Zeeland’s rich connection to the sea. Definitely worth a visit!
Elizabeth A — Google review
It's easy to see why the muZEEum earned a European Museum of the Year nomination in 2004. The building itself is impressive, and the interactive exhibits are cleverly designed, making for an enjoyable 90-minute visit. The museum focuses on Dutch heroes and celebrities of the 17th and 18th centuries, including Michiel de Ruyter and the Lampsins brothers. However, I left feeling uneasy. While the museum acknowledges their involvement in the slave trade, it downplays the brutal reality of their business dealings. These figures were part of a system that forcibly transported an estimated 600,000 enslaved Africans to the Caribbean, with countless individuals perishing during the horrific Middle Passage and in the brutal conditions of the plantations. Ships sailed regularly from Vlissingen and other Dutch ports first to Africa to load their human cargo and take them to the Americas and returning with the exotic goods that fueled the Dutch economy and the fortunes of men like de Ruyter and the Lampsins. While this history isn't entirely absent from the museum's narrative, it lacks a crucial human rights perspective, failing to adequately convey the immense suffering and injustice inflicted upon the enslaved people. Ultimately, this omission left me disappointed.
J-M — Google review
Wonderful place to visit. You can see pretty much everything in less than an hour. Do not skip the introductory video in the beginning of the route. It is a masterpiece. Also the view from the top is worth seeing. Free for museum card holders.

Zoos & Aquariums
Zoo
Iguana Reptile Zoo, situated in the heart of town, is Europe's largest covered reptile zoo. Boasting a diverse collection of over 500 live amphibians, reptiles, and insects from around the globe, visitors can marvel at an array of creatures including frogs, lizards, crocodiles, snakes, turtles, scorpions and tarantulas. Housed in a historic building with various terrariums showcasing these fascinating animals in their habitats.
Reptile zoo/rescue like no other, worth the visit ! Animals in such good shape (other than pre-existing condition before rescue ofc)! Clean habitats, intriguing pletora of species! Fully indoor and definetly big compared to any other reptilezoo.
Feedra M — Google review
Was very nice visiting here, and I would recommend it. The employee at the counter was extremely welcoming and lovely, however we did think the terrariums are run down and on the small side. The animals look good, but I hope there could be some renovations and real plants. The outside does not do it justice! Very welcoming
Jodie O — Google review
The zoo is located in a historic building in the heart of the city, which gives it a quite unique setting. There are many of the biggest reptiles, amphibians and insects in there that you will ever see. We were extremely lucky to witness one of the giant pythons move around in its terrarium - it was amazing to watch for the kids and us as well. There are multiple toilets on the route you are taking, and also snack machines offering extremely fair prices for snacks and drinks. The lady at the entry was extremely friendly and helpful.
Rising R — Google review
The zoo was setup in a historical building. It hosts very interesting reptiles. Most of them looked quite happy in their houses (I am not sure how a reptile can look happy though) still it is sad to see them in captivity. The exception is the albino piton. It could not survive in wild nature so it is better for it to be kept there. There are also a few skeletons in the exhibition and the one belonged to a piton was really impressive. You cannot enter for free with your museum cards. Get ready to pay around 8 euros per person. There is a small discount for kids.
Bülent K — Google review
WORST ZOO I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. If you want to support animals being mistreated then go ahead. Most of the cages were tiny (even when there were 5+ animals in there), pretty much all of the plants were fake (plastic), there was water missing in the cage with the big turtles, there was no real sand or mud in the cages (it was plastic). I could continue this list, i won’t. I also could have taken more pictures. We left early because we couldn’t handle it. I honestly do not know how this is legal.
Betty G — Google review
Lots of animals to see. Rescuing abandoned animals is a great thing to do. Works have like to get more info on the animals, though most have at least a species tag.
Georg F — Google review
Yes, it does have a big collection of various reptiles and even uncommon ones at that, but we thought that "the largest indoor reptile zoo in Europe" would have a bigger wow-factor. To put it into perspective, I would be curious how much larger the zoo is compared to reptilian sections of other zoos. So, for me, the statement "the largest indoor reptile zoo in Europe" raised expectations a bit too much, if I'm honest. Nevertheless, it is informative, there are some really special animals and stories in the exhibits, and overall it is a great option to spend time there with family. Can recommend it, especially if someone is into lizards (and similar), snakes, etc. 4/5!
Daniel R — Google review
This place is a wonderful addition to anyones day in Vlissingen. The animals are very well cared of and have big and beautiful habitats with everything the animal needs. The structure is remarkable, every habitat has been placed in the building in a clever way to still make sure the original features of the building are showing!

Beach
Nollestrand is a beautiful beach located in Vlissingen, offering visitors the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy a day by the sea. The beach boasts fine sand and clear waters, making it an ideal destination for beach lovers. While some seaweed may be present due to strong waves, the overall experience is still enjoyable. Visitors can also find colorful huts available for rent if they wish to stay nearby.
Nice place, sandy beach. It was a little cold to swim, but very cool!
Google review
Coming from a country with lots of beautiful beaches (Philippines), i can say that Zeeland beach is one of the beaches that is worth visiting in europe. Unlike other beaches that i have visited in EU, this one here has fine sand and clear water; but it can still improve -- seaweeds floating around so much in the afternoon due to strong waves. If you dont have a hotelroom nearby, it would be nice to rent one of these colorful huts. Dont forget to take picture of them too, they are like the "icon" of Zeeland 😉
Kats M — Google review
Vlissingen Beach presents a breathtaking vista, characterized by its dual-sided view that seamlessly merges natural beauty with architectural elegance. Flanked by striking buildings that embody both modern design and historical charm, the beach offers a unique atmosphere where leisure meets sophistication. The gentle waves lapping at the shore create a serene backdrop, while the surrounding structures enhance the coastal landscape, inviting visitors to indulge in a picturesque experience.

Nice beach, clean, not many seashell, so it doesn't hurt the feet, no dog allowed in the summer, there was many jellyfishs in the water but they're quite harmless. We were there when the tide is low, so it's perfect for small kids.

It's fine, the beach is quite clean, although the water quality is not great. I don't know if this is a blue flag beach but the region should put more effort in improving the water quality, for us humans and the environment !

Strandpaviljoen Piet Hein is a delightful beachside restaurant that offers a cozy atmosphere and stunning views of the ocean. While the weather can be a bit breezy at times, it doesn't detract from the overall experience. The menu features quality food with generous portions, making it a great spot for families to enjoy a meal together. Although there are limited vegan options and prices may be on the higher side compared to other local eateries, many guests appreciate the friendly service provided by most staff members.
The place was great and nice, but a bit windy yesterday. The food was good quality and nice portion considering the prices. The young waitress that took the orders and serve us the food was kind and smiling all the times but the one how bring the drinks was rude and grumpy all the way. Anyway is a great place to dine in and enjoy the view.

Theme Parks
Nestled in the heart of Vlissingen, Het Arsenaal is a delightful pirate-themed park that promises an adventure for families and children alike. Here, young explorers can immerse themselves in the world of pirates by navigating through a captivating pirate ship and other vessels. The attraction boasts an impressive aquarium featuring fascinating marine life, including sharks and rays, where kids can even touch some fish! For those seeking breathtaking views, the observation tower offers a stunning 360-degree panorama of the city and the North Sea.
A somewhat small sea life / aquarium with a playground for kids. The aquariums are nice and contain a variety of sea life found in the North sea. Especially nice is the big tank were kids can pet the different kinds of fish! The playground is nice so you can eat something simple in the restaurant. If you like views, there is a very tall tower with a good 360 view of Vlissingen and the North sea. The section about pirates is a bit weird, and not very enjoyable for kids, perhaps this needs an update/change. All around the price / quality is okay.
Caspar M — Google review
The pirate bit was a bit small and with young kids (5, 3 and 2) we got through it in about 10 minutes. Nice play area, but again only going to take 20 mins before the kids are bored. The aquarium was the best bit, but not huge. Not really suitable for kids under 3, I'd say.
CIE L — Google review
The attractions are old and dusty, not all of them work properly. Some don't work at all. The only thing nice was the aquarium and the tower. The rest should be urgently updated and fixed. It's too expensive for the quality of what they offer! For me, family and friends (a group of 4 adults and 3kids) it was really disappointing and a waste of tine/money.
Claudia G — Google review
My 2-year old enjoyed the fish and the pirates, but the rest of the experience was basically exactly what all the other reviews say. The place is outdated, the basins/aquariums a bit dirty. There was almost no staff so the ship simulator just sat there doing nothing. With some renovations/more staff/better aquariums it might be worth the money.
Suzanna K — Google review
We spent two hours there. At first we were disappointed - the exhibition on the top on pirates is not really interesting for kids nor for adults, somewhat carelessly made (translations have not been proofread by native speakers). The game zone in the middle was fun. The aquarium zone on the bottom level is good for kids but very little info on the animals is provided and some fish are clearly sick (inflamed gills @ the dog sharks in the touch basin f.ex). It was worth the money nonetheless; but two hours were not enough; and we only understood the idea of being on a ship with deck, inside a ship and on the sea floor / climbing the mast 2/3 through the experience. It is kind of sad because they could make so much more out of their aquarium and the pirate exhibition, and could improve the experience with better guidance.
Anna K — Google review
Nice aquarium. The tower was very nice to visit. Restaurant pricey and serving very slow. We waited for half an hour for our food and our young kids were out of patience. The food was REALLY not that tasty.
Le C — Google review
Not worth its money. At all. Not only entrance (they charge 3 year olds), parking (there's a free parking available but good luck finding it as there are no - zero - arrows towards it from the entrance and the closeby parking is 2€ / hour, also the restaurant: you'll think *ok its overpriced but all theme park restaurants are* but (1) it's not a theme park and (2) wait until you see the portion. You're practically forced to ask for extra fries. (We complained about being expected to share one small packet of mayo and mini basket of fries with two people, got promised extra, got nothing. To be fair, we did manage to negotiate a discount, and the taste of what we did get was good.) For an attraction aimed at kids, only two baby seats for the entire restaurant... I saw quite some parents balancing babies on their lap to feed them. Although the inside is done up nice, fitting the theme, you quickly get the feeling its all rather platonic. The aquarium is (nice but) nothing special. The animated skeletons and pirate dolls are... Well... In a theme park you get those things to amuse you while you're waiting to get on the ride. Here it's just that, without the ride. There's a person making balloon swords, and this seems to be (expected to be) a very prominent part of the adventure. Against all expectations (I'm certainly not planning to go back) it manages to get overcrowded in the afternoon. It gets stuffy and hot. You don't feel comfortable letting go of your kids hand for a second. The last floor featuring a bar, has some attractions. A kid climbing area is free - for everything else you pay extra. Again trying to be fair here: similar games in theme parks tend to also cost extra. Although the entrance fee there covers most rides and attractions, whereas here... It seems to have all the bad points of a theme park, and none of the good ones. My conclusion: drive to Plopsaland instead. It costs a bit more, but you'll get much better value for money.

Hello, The food was very tasty. The hamburger was of considerable size. The beef steak tasted excellent to us. 😋 We would like to come visit again.

In my opinion, just a tourist trap… -1⭐️ The pub isn’t really clean, the tables are sticky, the toilets are a mess. -1 ⭐️ The waiter was motivated like a sloth. Doesn’t cared about our wishes, doesn’t cared about our opinion at the end of the lunch nor even said good bye to us when we left. -1⭐️ There are hardly vegetarian alternatives. You can’t change the burger, even if it is mentioned in the menu. The ordered salad was a joke. 15,50€ for 5 slices of goat cheese and a handful of green stuff. We then asked for some white bread, as my wife would leave hungry otherwise. We got dark bread instead with some topings we didn’t ordered and payed another 3,50€. - 1⭐️ The Burger patty tastes like sausage, the bun was cold and fluffy and the fries were soft. All in all we will certainly not come back - maybe you shouldn't either…
Daniel R — Google review
We ordered the cheese burger and fries. The staff were very friendly and helpful and gave us advise on the menu. The burger and fries were really nice, we really enjoyed it and I really liked the side salad with the mustard vinegarette. The service was great 👍 I really liked that we could laugh and joke with the staff. The location was great and the place has a very cosmopolitan feel, chilled and relaxed which we enjoyed. Great food, decent beer, great location, friendly staff we would definitely 💯% visit again when I come back to Vlissingen.

The Statue of Michiel de Ruyter stands as a magnificent tribute to one of the most esteemed naval commanders in Dutch history, born in Vlissingen. This impressive monument not only commemorates his remarkable contributions during the 17th century, particularly during the Anglo-Dutch Wars, but also offers visitors a chance to soak in stunning views of the harbor and shipping lanes he once navigated.

The statue of Dutch admiral. Apparently many Dutch people also don't know who he is. Many birds sit on his head and paint him white. Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter is widely celebrated and regarded as one of the most skilled admirals in history, De Ruyter is arguably most famous for his achievements with the Dutch Navy during the Anglo-Dutch Wars. But not many people visit. He fought the English and French forces and scored several critical victories, with the Raid on the Medway being the most famous among them.

Situated below the boulevard, it offers a beautiful setting for film enthusiasts to enjoy their favorite movies and take leisurely strolls afterward. Additionally, Vlissingen hosts the renowned international Film by the Sea festival annually, making it a must-visit destination for cinema lovers.
One of the best cinemas I know. The staff is kind, chairs are comfortable and you of course have the special big screen which makes movies more fun to watch. The snacks are expensive to buy there though.

Good cinema, obviously a great cinematic atmosphere inside, food is a little on the expensive side but not too bad either. It's probably going to be changed into a different cinema company and be renovated. But for the time being it's a great place.

This is the cinema I grew up with. It has always been very clean and the staff is very welcoming towards guests. The prices of food are as to be expected, cinema like expensive. But overall I would definitely recommend going here to watch a movie. It currently houses one of the largest screens in Europe if I recall correctly. Definitely worth a watch!

Museum Panorama Walcheren is a unique artistic attraction that vividly captures the beauty and essence of Walcheren. The panoramic paintings by artist Jo Dumon Tak offer an immersive experience, where viewers feel as though they are inside the artwork due to the meticulous use of color and light. Housed in the old Scheldt shipyard machine factory, visitors can explore various panoramas depicting scenes from Middelburg, Vlissingen, and Domburg.
A wonderful chance to have a view over the Walcheren area via panoramic paintings. They are very impressive, there is plenty of information on the paintings. The volunteers are excellent! Very friendly and welcoming.

Must see in the Walcheren/Vlissingen area. Very engaged stuff, value for money and stunning location (former church).
Kay O — Google review
This is a grand stop! The artist, Jo Dumon Tak, is really interesting and has done some incredible panoramas. A properly done panoramic painting is a huge undertaking: requiring complex perspective calculations. If it is done right, the viewer is not simply looking at a painting--instead you are INSIDE the painting. Dumon Tak's use of color and light make the panorama experience very realistic. One of the pieces places you inside a brilliantly green forest. Another puts your feet on a wet, sandy beach. Each is displayed individually, with no distractions. This enhances the experience enormously. In addition to quite a few panoramas, Dumok Tak shows the work of his students and various smaller works he has completed. The building itself and the history of Walcheren is really interesting; the island was completely flooded during the liberation of Holland. Panorama Walcheren in Vlissingen is a jewel not to be missed.

(Translated by Google) The church was founded between 1308 and 1328. The lower (stone) part of the St. Jacob's Tower dates from this time. The Gothic spire was replaced in 1501 by a wooden crown that resembles the current one. The carillon in the tower is the 4th carillon in the church and dates from 1951. In 1911 a major fire broke out in the church, causing serious damage to the church. This fire caused the spire to collapse and land on the rest of the church building. A large part of the furnishings was lost, as well as the church organs. The northern cross arm was previously intended as an English church; this part was shielded by a wall. After the fire, a large part of this was also destroyed. The English moved to the Nieuwe Kerk in 1914 on the site of the current town hall on Paul Krugerstraat. There were once 466 graves in the church, but after the fire of 1911, only a small number were put back for decoration. Michiel de Ruyter was baptized and married in this church. The St. Jacobs Church can be rented for your own events and is ideal for a trade fair, company presentation, reunion or other meetings.

Museum Scheldewerf may seem small and dusty at first, but it's a treasure trove of stories and enthusiasm. Visitors are encouraged to take a guided tour for an in-depth experience, with teenagers particularly engrossed in the guide's narratives. The museum exudes nostalgia and offers insights into the construction of the Willem Ruys as well as information about the Scheldt shipyard, making it a recognizable spot for enthusiasts.
A charming small museum with lots of details and insights of the Royal Schelde (Koninklijke Schelde Groep, now Damen Naval) and its impressive (almost) 150 years of shipbuilding history in the city of Vlissingen. I don't feel like I paid the right price ,since the area is still constructing and some of the games (the ones I was actually looking forward to the most) are not available . When I tried to talk about this with one of the staff his answer was a bit rude and he looked like he didn't care that we are paying the full price but not for the full experience . Other than that it's fun and nicely arranged. Also in really hot days you get a free slush puppie 😉

The bad: a bit chaotic, very noisy due to new bowling alley construction. Paid for SkyRide but was broken so received one arcade coin in return. Lasershoot delayed due to technical problems. Not enough parking spaces, needed to park in the street. Tables shortage and table cleanup could benefit from frequency increase. The good: friendly and enthousiastic staff, kids had good fun.

Uncle Beach Memorial Vlissingen is a significant historical site located on the seaside resort of Vlissingen beach. It commemorates the Battle of the Scheldt, a crucial Allied operation during World War II. The outdoor museum offers visitors a deeper understanding of the events that took place in this area and pays tribute to those who lost their lives for freedom. The memorial provides an opportunity to reflect on the impact of WWII and hear stories that give a profound appreciation for history.
UNCLE BEACH. On September 21, 1944, the Battle of the Scheldt begins, consisting of several Allied operations, with the main objective of securing the passage to Antwerp. At the beginning of October, the dykes on Walcheren are bombed to pieces at various points, as a result of which Walcheren is largely under water. On November 1, the final of the Battle of the Scheldt, operation Infatuate, starts. Allied troops make the crossing from Breskens and land at Vlissingen on Uncle Beach, with the intention of retaking Walcheren. The Allies moved into the city along three routes along the boulevard, towards Souburg and right through the city center.

Roompot Noordzee Resort Vlissingen is a dreamy destination where you can fall asleep to the soothing sound of waves and wake up with the beach at your doorstep. The beach lodges and villas offer a magical experience, equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The location is perfect, just a few minutes' walk from the beach. While there are some minor points to consider such as storage space and WiFi connection, the friendly staff and overall experience make it highly recommended.
It's an absolutely magical place. If you think about booking a beach house in Vlissingen, do not think twice - book it. You will NOT regret it. We spend 4 days in this paradise and would go back in a heartbeat. The houses are equipped with everything you might need, the beds are comfortable, and it's clean - plus you wake up directly at the beach. We had a hard time finding the front desk, as it is tucked away as part of a camping spot. They have exact check in times lots but the check in process is super easy and hassle free. They even drop off your luggage and belongings directly in front of your house. There are a total of 32 beach houses at the Nollestrand. I would recommend to stay at the ones closer to the end, if you like a little more silence and privacy. The other ones are closer to the part of the beach that is frequented by tourists. There are grocery stores in walking distance (20 minutes), and you can pre-order your bread rolls at the front desk the day prior. The only thing that would make this even better is room service and room cleaning 🤣 Highly recommend!

Good situated within walking distance to the beach and city center. Very nice staff. The beach houses direct on the beach look very nice. Also the dune houses. We stayed in an Urban Villa: Quite noisy place. You hear chairs moving from neighbour villa. If you open the window towards the street the noise level was also too high for us. Mattress far to soft for us. Was like a hammock:-). But of course these are all topics we did not found very appealing. If you don't bother with this then it is a lovely place.

Oranjemolen is a place where visitors can reflect on the essentials while witnessing the forces of nature in action. The windmill, built in 1580 and named after the palace of the Prince of Orange, stands on a dike and offers an idyllic setting for parents and children to explore. Visitors can climb steep wooden stairs inside the mill to witness the process of flour-making by hand and observe various machines and mill mechanisms on different floors.
We chose to come here on foot. Took the dog with us also. There are surprisingly quite a few secret beaches dotted about the path and one of the better ones is right next to the Oranjemolen for sure. The sunset looked amazing from here. Loved walking at the beach, and loved swimming. Nothing but dreamy beach sands for kilometers wide, and no see creatures or whatever to annoy you. Sometimes full, but mostly empty and nice. Loved coming here and putting up a sun tent, then reading and looking at the beach. The water is nice and cold and there are some boats passing by, which just make the scenery more pretty in my opinion.

Scenic spot
The slightest breeze makes the bamboo pipes hum. A nice spot to rest for a while.
Paul B — Google review
Without seeming arrogant, but here one must clearly relativize the value of the attraction: I do not want to judge art, but the exceptionality of the place and the object of art must be clearly classified as conditionally worth seeing. Impressive are the large ships, which pass close to the lighthouse due to the fairway. But has nothing to do with the artwork.
Bernd M — Google review
Even though it’s windy, the sound is not as loud as i thought and you couldn’t really film it because of the wind noise. But the scenery from the place is beautiful

The water tower is located right on the beach, the boulevard is a stone's throw away and can be reached in just 2 minutes and the tower is within walking distance of the bustling center. The water tower is suitable for 4 to 16 people. There are no fewer than 7 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a sauna and a play cellar for the little ones. All parts of the tower are special. It is even possible to walk around in the original water barrel. In the tower roof you have a beautiful view of the sea and the island of Walcheren on all sides. The meeting room is in the tower room. This has a 360 degree view of the entire Vlissingen. Disgusting to make points like this with wrong information. And there is a bit of sentiment there, I almost lived there. Hope Google Maps will rectify this soon. Frans Naerebout, born into a humble family of fishermen in Veere, was engaged in fishing with his siblings along the Zeeland coast. In 1781, he secured employment from the government as a pilot, and later became a harbor pilot in Zeeland by 1783. Notably, on July 23rd, 1779, he played a vital role in rescuing numerous lives after the frigate "de Woestduyn" met with disaster.

(Translated by Google) Frans Naerebout was of humble origins. He started his working life in the industry his father worked in: fishing, but over the years he worked his way up to become a pilot. It was July 27, 1779. The heavily loaded East Indiaman Woestduin was almost back in his home port of Middelburg after a trip from Batavia. Then they got stuck on a sandbank in the Western Scheldt. There was a heavy storm and the ship was constantly swamped by high waves. That evening it was a fair in Vlissingen, but such a spectacle was not often seen and the population came out to look at the ship in distress. The crew seemed hopelessly lost. Yet Frans Naerebout, together with his brother Jacob and 7 others, took the plunge. After a few failed attempts, they managed to rescue 71 of the 129 crew members with their small ship. The next morning he saved 16 more, bringing the total to 87. The rescue was immediate national news and the brothers were showered with rewards and honors. Life went on and Frans continued to work as a pilot. But the economy and the merchant navy gradually came to a standstill and Naerebout eventually had to look for new work around the age of sixty (his brother Jacob had already died and married Frans). He subsequently became a shrimp fisherman, harbor and lock keeper and lighthouse keeper in Goes. It was not a luxurious life and Frans lived alone on the sea side in a house made of sails and planks. It took years before he got a wooden house with a chimney and a tiled roof. Then his wife was finally able to move back in with him. Towards the end of his life in 1816, Naerebout, who was after all one of the greatest naval heroes Zeeland has ever known, was reinstated. He was given money for services rendered and in 1817 he was appointed Brother in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. This included an annual fixed benefit. However, Frans Naerebout died a year later in 1818 at the age of 70.

(Translated by Google) Agatha (Aagje) Deken (1741-1804) started living together at the age of 29 with her then girlfriend, who died after 3 years. She then started an exchange of letters with Elisabeth (Betje) Wolff (1738 - 1804). Aagje was upset about Betje's fierce mockery of the regents and the church at that time and wrote her a critical letter. A busy correspondence ensued, which showed that Wolff and Deken were not so different in terms of mentality. In 1777, Betje's husband (a dean), with whom she had a marriage of convenience, died and Aagje and Betje started living together. In 1782 they jointly published the epistolary novel 'History of Miss Sara Burgerhart''. This book is considered the first modern Dutch novel. Until 1960, the book Sara Burgerhart was still required reading at secondary schools in the Netherlands. Their book ''The history of den Heer Willem Leevend'' was also a hit. In 1804 they died 9 days apart. Betje went first. In Vlissingen, the birthplace of Elisabeth Wolff, there has been a large monument in the form of a fountain since 1884, for this writing duo with their image on it. Both ladies had a close friendship at a time when the word lesbian had not yet been invented. They are buried together at the cemetery ''Ter Navolging'' in Scheveningen. A memorial stone for Wolff and Deken was also erected here in 1895.
