The Richmond Gaol, built in 1825, is a notable prison with tours of its cells, holding rooms and yards. The gift shop adds to the attraction's appeal. This oldest jail in Australia features displays that depict the lives of convicts, gaolers and administrators. Visitors are treated to an actual experience of what took place during that time period. Of particular interest are the solitary cells without windows where convicts were confined for up to 21 days without exercise or fresh air.
A must-visit piece of Australian history! I’m so glad the public can now access Richmond Gaol—it’s incredible to think this place was a private residence for so long. The site is beautifully preserved, offering a powerful glimpse into Tasmania’s convict past. The lady at the entrance was especially lovely and helpful—she shared some fascinating details about Richmond’s history that really enriched our time exploring the area. There were also some great activities for my 8-year-old to do while we walked through the jail—she had fun spotting things and ticking them off her scavenger hunt, which made the visit even more enjoyable for her. And just outside the jail, we found an excellent pie and pastry shop—perfect for a snack before or after your visit. Highly recommended stop if you’re in the area!

It was truly excellent. Rod, the staff member, was incredibly friendly, professional, and full of helpful information. The goal is breathtaking, with stunning displays that really wow you, and the condition of the building is impressive. We've driven past many times and are so glad we finally stopped to explore. The informative plaques inside beautifully tell the stories of the men and women connected to this place. The gift shop is packed with a wide variety of products—you'll love browsing through it. I’m not posting too many pictures because you really need to experience it for yourself. Keep up the fantastic work maintaining this gorgeous building and its grounds!

Being older than Port Arthur, the restoration is well done. Solitary confinement rooms where you can experience what it would have been like - dark and tiny. A piece of history captured in completion compared to ruins of other Gaols from original settlements. Worth seeing

Excellent place to visit and with an entry fee of only $12, it's nice and reasonable. You can feel the history of the place and it's been so well maintained. You won't spend long there but you can walk to the Richmond bridge from there and get a double dose of beauty and history.

The oldest existing Gaol in Australia and it has been well preserved. Would have preferred a tour guide or maybe an audio tour but still thought it was worthwhile.

The restoration of this place is very well done, and it's amazing how much was able to be retained/restored when you compare it with other facilities from the same period. The self-tour was informative and there was plenty of information around the place. I appreciated the recreations to demonstrate what conditions would have been like.

Superb little gaol museum. Well worth a visit if you find yourself in Richmond. A completely different experience to Port Arthur.

Had a very interesting visit to the Gaol. Hard to believe how cruel the sentences were and the conditions that the prisoners were housed in. The solitary confinement cells are horrifying

Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
Richmond Bridge, located in Tasmania, Australia, is a picturesque sandstone bridge that was constructed in 1825 by convict labor. It holds the distinction of being the oldest bridge still in use in Australia and is also the oldest stone span bridge in the country. The bridge serves as a main thoroughfare for both vehicles and pedestrians crossing the Coal River.
Stopped by Richmond Bridge and it’s a charming spot, perfect for a quick visit and some great photos. The historic stone bridge is picturesque, and the surrounding area is lovely with heaps of friendly ducks waddling around. It wasn’t busy at all, which made it nice and relaxing. The town itself is full of historic charm with plenty of nice cafes and eateries to enjoy. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

The Richmond Bridge is a beautiful and historically significant spot, and definitely worth stopping by if you are visiting Richmond. Built in 1825 by convicted prisoners, this picturesque sandstone bridge spans the Coal River and stands as one of Tasmania’s oldest and most iconic structures. It is a wonderful place for a short walk where you can appreciate the combination of history, architecture, and natural beauty all in one scene. The surrounding landscape is peaceful and scenic, with friendly ducks waddling around adding to the charm of the place. Behind the bridge, you will find a lovely area filled with blossoms and colourful flowers, perfect for taking photos or simply sitting back and enjoying the view.

Title: Beautiful Historic Bridge Review: “Richmond Bridge is absolutely stunning and full of history. The architecture is beautiful, and the peaceful surroundings make it a perfect spot for a walk or photos. A must-visit if you’re in Tasmania!”

We stopped by Richmond Bridge and it’s such a charming little spot. The bridge itself is beautiful — old sandstone, historic, and surrounded by peaceful views. It’s great for a quick walk, some photos, and soaking in a bit of Tasmania’s heritage. The area around it is cute and easy to explore, and the whole place has a relaxed, small-town vibe. Definitely worth a short stop if you’re in the area!

DUCKIES! Such a beautiful small town with adorable duckies around. A lovely place to spend the afternoon with lots of greenaries and the duckies are an absolute gem! A very peaceful vibe. Absolute loved it and I came back from Hobart a second time during my short trip.

Richmond Bridge is over 202 years old, and it’s amazing to see how well it’s been preserved. I was so happy to walk around the area and take in its charm. The peaceful surroundings and historic feel made the visit even more special.

Richmond Bridge makes history feel beautifully immediate. Built by convict stonemasons in the 1820s, its sandstone arches still carry cars and walkers over the Coal River without fuss. From the middle of the span you get that classic view: willow trees dipping into the water, St John’s Church steeple rising just beyond the ridge, and ducks tracing lazy ripples below. Early or late in the day, warm light turns the stone a soft gold and reflections double the scene almost perfectly. Take a slow wander and the craftsmanship stands out. Hand-tooled chisel marks remain visible in many blocks, and a few stones bear the initials of the men who laid them nearly two centuries ago. Plaques at each end share the bridge’s backstory without overwhelming you, so even a casual stroll leaves you with a sense of the engineering challenge and the convict lives behind it. The surrounding parkland invites a longer pause. Grassy banks make an easy picnic spot, local swans drift by hoping for crumbs, and a short path leads to a vantage point ideal for photos. Parking lines the road near the bridge, public toilets sit a minute’s walk away, and Richmond’s bakery and cafés are close enough to grab a pastry or coffee before you settle in. Whether you visit for colonial history, photography or just a quiet riverside break, Richmond Bridge rewards every unhurried step.

Pooley Wines is one of the cellar doors near town, offering a delightful wine tasting experience. Visitors praise Charlie, the knowledgeable and engaging host who adds a delightful touch to the tour with his enthusiasm for each wine's unique characteristics. The rustic charm of the location enhances the enjoyment of their Riesling and other wines. Guests also appreciate Tristan's expertise in serving delicious wines and extras, making their experience enjoyable and unique.
We had a nice wine and decided to track down the winery. The drive was very pleasant, even if we took a slight detour over the mountains. The winery itself was stunning, a nice quiet deck to sit on even for a busy day. The pizza selection was extensive with some delicious platters to accompany them. And a useful selection of wines. Nestled amongst the vines it was a great lunch stop. The tasting room looked brilliant but did require a booking.

Had a great experience doing a wine tasting here! Came for pizzas but we were a bit early, turned out for the best because the wine tasting was amazing, tried some new wines for me personally and had a lovely young guy who talked me through each wine and gave us some great recs for restaurants in the area too. Definitely recommend! The venue itself is beautiful too.

Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable!Highly recommend for anyone to visit and enjoy some of Tasmania’s finest quality wines!

Pooley Wines feels like stepping into the Italian countryside—such a charming and picturesque setting. Even on a busy afternoon, our server was incredibly attentive and took the time to answer all our questions with so much knowledge and care. The wines were superb, each glass full of character and beautifully made. We’re already looking forward to coming back, especially to try their wood-fired pizza next time!

Perfect day. Found it a little challenging getting a park but that is because it is a very charming spot. The service was fantastic, all staff were amazing very natural and accomodating. The food was lovely had two pizzas and the cheese board. In the wine tasting the woman was informative and friendly. Adjusted her pitch to our bogan personalities. It was my son’s first sample of wine and was a great introduction into the subtleties of flavours and what makes a great drop. We left with a bottle of wine. Thanks for a great day

My friend and I came in for a tasting at lunchtime on a weekday (12/11/25) in the Cellar Door. Firstly the entire venue is gorgeous. Beautiful views, plenty of tables outside and well decorated inside. The art was fun to look at. At $15 for 6 wines you truly can’t go wrong. They were all delicious — I only liked one slightly less (the rosé) but really, all were delightful. The young man who did our tasting was absolutely wonderful. Wine tastings can be awkward sometimes depending on who you get but he was friendly, knowledgeable and happy to engage. We enjoyed hearing about the wines from him and he seemed to genuinely enjoy his job. My one and only piece of feedback would be to please play some soft background music. It was dead silent in the cellar door and made trying to catch up with a friend interesting. Though, after some wine it didn’t bother us too much. My parents will be visiting from interstate soon and after trying other wineries in the area, I will definitely be bringing them here. Thank you for a great experience and I’m looking forward to returning.

We booked for the lunch and wine tasting during our day visit to Richmond. Everything about Pooley Wineries is gorgeous! The smell of wood-fired pizza greets you on entry and the lunch area looks out over a gorgeous farm at the top of Richmond. The wine tasting has a variety of selections. We did the 6-wine tasting for $15 and it is certainly worth the money, especially after having a delicious fresh pizza. ** EDIT: I should mention, we did the day trip to Richmond from Hobart without renting a car. The Pooley Winery is an easy walk from the Richmond city centre.

Seasonal river
Nestled in southern Tasmania, the Coal River Valley offers a delightful mix of wineries and farms for visitors to explore. The area is renowned for its mouthwatering delights, with Frogmore Creek Winery's restaurant serving up divine meals paired with their acclaimed cool climate wines. Meanwhile, Pooley Wines invites guests to sample their long-living Rieslings and intensely flavored Pinot Noirs at the historic Belmont Vineyard cellar door.
This river in southern Tasmania and near Richmond village was named coal river by map surveyor James Meehan because as you guess, coal was found in the area. The oldest bridge in Tasmania was constructed and called Richmond (believed to be named after Richmond Park nearby) to go over this river. The settlement around it was hence named Richmond. The river has arable land around it leading to the wineries and farms constructed around it. Currently, the most popular feature of this river is the bridge where many tourists come to visit. The banks is bordered by simple trails where you can take a leisurely stroll along.

Pooseum is a unique museum in the Richmond area that offers an intriguing look into the world of animal feces. It's not as gross as it may sound and is actually quite interesting, especially for kids with a curious mind. The museum features quirky facts about poop, such as the square shape of wombat poo and how some caterpillars can eject their waste up to 1.5 meters away.
What a unique establishment. Never imagined there could be a museum about Poo 💩💩💩 The owner is very passionate about her business and is extremely involved in ensuring the visitors have a pleasant insightful experience. Very thoughtfully done place. Use of modern technology at multiple places to make the whole experience an interactive and informative one. Well done ✅

We were so blessed to meet Karin Koch at the Pooseum today, she is so inspiring in her commitment to share her knowledge and fascination with the natural world (from a unique perspective thats for sure). I would recommend giving yourself plenty of time here as the space is packed with bite sized info, expertly curated by Karin for maximum consumption. The screens and software for presenting details are all top notch, inviting one to delve in more! Thank you Karin for all that you have poured in, the world needs more passionate people like you! P.s. you must visit the loo!

What an eye opener this Pooseum is. Karin has a passion for all animals and their faeces which she displays in such an inventive way, that young and old can't help but become interested too. The only Museum of this kind in the world, is a credit to Karin. You won't regret visiting when you call into Richmond.
