Rail museum
Museums
The Railway Museum, situated in Omiya, Saitama City, is a modern and interactive museum that delves into the history of railway development in Japan and beyond. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring old train cars and simulators that provide insight into train operation and technology evolution over time. The extensive collection includes steam and diesel locomotives, passenger and freight cars, as well as retired shinkansen.
Every train enthusiasts dream.. Lots about the history of trains and railway cars in Japan and how they evolved. In fact, there is probably too much information for just one day. The museum has: * various trains * a giant diorama (think model train set in a basement but x100) of the trains currently in Tokyo and how and when they operate * simulators (you can to practice driving trains) * a lunch car train for you to eat in * interactive activities, such as making your own train * a cafe/restaurant * souvenir shop * audio information available in English via the app * daily demonstrations of how they would change tracks. I am sure i am missing stuff as well but if you like trains or are with someone who likes trains. I would recommend this museum. It was easy to get to via the metro and you can buy tickets online or in person. Would recommend 2-4 hours based on level of interest.

This place is freaking amazing! It’s like stepping into train heaven. The life-size locomotives are jaw-dropping, the simulators make you feel like a real conductor, and the exhibits are super interactive (even for adults). The whole place is spotless, easy to navigate, and packed with history that somehow never feels boring. Don’t skip the rooftop where you can watch Shinkansen fly by—it’s surreal. If you’re in Tokyo and even slightly curious about trains, this museum is an absolute must-visit.

A must-visit for train enthusiasts, but there's also a ton of stuff for kids. On a Friday morning, there were tons of families and school groups, so I can't imagine how crowded it must get on weekends. It's a really big museum, so you probably need more than a couple of hours to see everything. There are several places to eat, and a really big souvenir shop as well.

Fun and Educational Experience for the Whole Family! We visited The Railway Museum in Tokyo (Omiya) with our 20-month-old baby and had a great time! The museum is very well-organized, spacious, and clean. Even though our little one is still young, he enjoyed looking at the real trains, moving models, and the sound effects — lots of visual and sensory fun! There are many interactive exhibits for both kids and adults. Older children can enjoy train simulators and hands-on activities, while parents can learn about the history and technology of Japan’s railway system. Facilities are family-friendly — clean nursing rooms, stroller-friendly paths, and rest areas make it comfortable for parents with babies. The restaurant and café also offer nice meals and snacks with a train view. It’s definitely a great place to spend half a day or more, especially for families and train lovers. Highly recommended if you’re visiting Tokyo with kids! 🚄✨

Amazing museum! Everything about Japanese trains from 19th century to the newest JR additions! From real trains to models to awesome history rooms with many accessories and authentic things from era. Tickets are also really affordable and they have a model train store here! It's one of the best museums not even in greater Tokyo area but in all of Japan!
Andzio — Google review
We visited the museum on a Saturday in November 2024. For train enthusiasts, this place is incredibly exciting; however, we believe that even non-enthusiasts will be in awe of it as well. This place is amazing! There are several exhibitions stretching from the train station to the entrance of the museum. If I remember correctly, there are about four to five ticket machines outside. We paid in cash, and at that time, the ticket price was ¥1600 per adult. Surprisingly, there was no queue since we arrived around 11 am, and the morning crowd had mostly entered by then. The exhibition features a huge hall displaying various models and types of trains used throughout history. We walked around several times to appreciate each train on display. You can even enter some of the trains to experience what the cabin feels like inside. The different designs of the trains and their cabins can be appreciated by anyone, not just dedicated train enthusiasts. It's also a fun place for kids; the displays are not only grand but also quite engaging. The second floor of the exhibition houses a restaurant and presents a chronological timeline of the different types of trains, including those that are still in existence and those coming in the future, complete with detailed miniature models. In another building, there are several simulators where visitors can experience what it's like to be a train conductor. It's surprisingly realistic. Overall, I can confidently say that this museum is worth the visit. It offers not only a stunning perspective on design but also a deep appreciation for engineering and technology. Over the years, advancements in engineering and technology, combined with innovative design, have made significant contributions to the history of trains.

Fantastic train museum - kids will love it. HUGE display of trains, galleries full of stuff, heaps of activities and shoes for the kids. Allow a full day to see and do everything. Multiple restaurants and cafes on site to slake hunger and thirsty. Conveniently located right outside train station too! Only star off for complicated "lottery" style reservation system for some of the activities
Jimmy M — Google review
I'm so glad I came here, I'm not even much of a train fan but driving the mini trains and the simulators put a very big smile on my face. A fantastic museum and experience that's well thought out and put together, absolutely worth the journey from central Tokyo! Food in the restaurant was a bit poor, very expensive and not tasty. Would be perfect with a better menu as the decor and atmosphere were great.

Museums
The Omiya Bonsai Art Museum in Saitama is a unique garden-museum that offers a captivating showcase of the traditional Japanese art of bonsai. Since its opening in 2010, it has attracted visitors from around the world who are interested in international gardening styles and bonsai culture. The museum features elaborate bonsai tree specimens, historical displays, and even a shop for enthusiasts.
Bonsai is not just a tree growing in a small pot, but it is an entire landscape that is grown in a pot. Not only Japanese love bonsai but also foreigners. We came to visit the Omiya Bonsai Museum with a cousin who is from the USA. He enjoyed it very much. Amazingly, bringing forth the unique beauty of a bonsai tree requires special techniques and time-consuming labor, with meticulous attention to detail. The museum was amazing and showcased the beauty of bonsai trees. Besides, our understanding of bonsai is also deeper than ever before.

This is a must see! I am so grateful to myself for making the time and the staff for gifting me a postcard since it’s an ongoing partnership with the JR Rail Pass. It was remarkable to see much ancient bonsai. I spent about an hour reading my book in the gardens and exploring. Highly recommend and don’t forget to check out their exhibits and grab your stamp!

Outstanding!! Loved the history/timeline of bonsai in Japan + the explanation of bonsais/different species/pruning/etc. About 300yen per adult which is a super fair price. The garden outdoors (they have umbrellas) is incredible and you are welcome to take photos. They have a tree that is 1000 years old!!

The museum is amazing with beautiful trees and great setup. I also did a workshop of 90 mins with Sensai Ken. He is awesome! I was allowed to carry the potted plant! But my country wont allow with certificate.

The bonsai collections were all great, aging around 100-350 year even two of them are 800 and 1000 years old. Really a great experience to visit the museum. Surely will come back again.👍

Gorgeous and excellent labels in English. I learned a lot and really enjoyed the outdoor garden. I didn’t know about the surrounding village and the few nurseries we were able to enter because of the excellent guidance from the museum staff were eye opening. Like many Japanese museums and cultural events it was a little disappointing that photos weren’t alllowed everywhere, but I learned such a significant amount from the experience, the memories will stick. Each bonsai is an entire landscape!

Amazing bonzai collection and clear explanation of the history and art of bonsai! There are 500 to 800 year old bonsai l and a very kind old man in the garden who folded some truly awesome and cute origami with our museum tickets. Love it!

Neighborhoods
Nestled in the heart of Saitama Prefecture, Omiya Bonsai Village is a serene haven for bonsai enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. This charming neighborhood boasts a rich history, featuring meticulously maintained gardens that showcase unique bonsai specimens from various nurseries. The village is also home to the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum, Japan's first public museum dedicated to this exquisite art form, which opened its doors in 2010.
This location just marks a central place in the village, but there is nothing particularly interesting right at this point on the map. It is best to check the specific locations of the museum and nurseries for their opening hours. However, Omiya is a beautiful area, with several Bonsai nurseries where you can go for a walk, enjoy the bonsai on display and buy some trees, pots or tools. If you are a bonsai enthusiast, this is a must-see, and if not, it is still highly recommended to spend a morning enjoying something so typically Japanese.

Amazing Experience! 5 Gardens plus the museum… No photos Allowed… Masterpieces and authentic atmosphere…
Georgios F — Google review
Incredible experience. The staff were helpful and kind, the exhibits at the museum were informative and interesting, and the trees were amazing. From the tiniest baby Bonzai in the nurseries, to seasoned trees older than the USA (where I am from), everything we saw was beautiful and a testament to the dedication and skill of generations of Bonzai practitioners.
Sparrow M — Google review
The museum was closed due to renovations, so check its re-opening date before you come. There were 5-6 other bonsai nurseries there that you can visit, and I saw plenty of amazing bonsais. No photography is allowed, so just soak in all the beautiful arrangements. I asked one of the masters about a small bonsai and he told me it took 25 years to grow from seeds. For international travellers you are probably out of luck, domestic visitors can buy bonsai at pretty reasonable prices (when factoring in the work that has been put in). You can buy some nice and small ceramic bonsai pots in a couple of the nurseries. Eye-opening experience if you like plants. Only two train stops away from Omiya Station or if you are a walker you can definitely walk here from the Station through the Omiya Park.

place for serenity and love. certainly a relaxing place to visit. an extraordinary experience to see those tiny trees in pots. imagine all the loving hands that took care of them from generations to generations. it is that deep sense of culture and love. one does not apply to work as a bonsai care taker. it's pure love that connects the master to the tree that brings out the best of that relationship. awesome is an understatement.

What a cute area! We did not arrive in Omiya until 4PM on a Friday evening after a last minute change in plans, sadly the bonsai and manga museum were already closed, but after seeing this area on Design Talk+ during an NHK World broadcast, I knew we'd have to at least walk around and check it out. The small visitor center was still open and provided free walking maps of the area, which was appreciated! The entire area was a quiet residential district and a pleasure to walk. Littered with small outdoor bonsai areas in from of random houses and small parks to enjoy outdoor time in, if that's your cup of tea I highly recommend talking a stroll in the neighborhood if you find yourself in the area. It was a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Lots of information about the history as well as a crash course on how to appreciate the artform before you are unleashed outdoors to apply that history and appreciation on century old bonsai specimens. Loved my time there so much.

Musashi Ichinomiya Hikawa Jinja is a historic Shinto shrine founded in 473 BCE, making it one of the oldest and most significant shrines in Japan. Located in a park with cherry trees, a zoo, and a museum, the shrine attracts large crowds during festivals and special events like hatsumode.
It is a great walk along the 2 km approach to the shrine. This shrine has a history of 2,500 years. During the year-end and New Year's holidays, many Japanese visit the shrine to pray for good health!

This is a historic shrine set in a beautiful park with water features, ducks, koi and turtles. The sense of peace and tranquility fills you as soon as you enter. We happened upon it by accident, walking back from the Bonzai Village. It was so beautiful, and we enjoyed playing our respects at the temples inside, as well as veiring the gardens and wildlife. The koi were especially friendly. There are signs warning not to feed them. Thought the park, there is a children's playground, and a zoo as well. We returned the next day to visit the zoo.

Museums
The Museum of Modern Art Saitama, or MOMAS, is a must-visit for art enthusiasts. Located in a striking building with stylish design chairs, it features rotating exhibits of international and Japanese art. The museum also houses a permanent collection of chairs with beautiful designs from history that visitors can even sit on. Additionally, the museum offers great value with special collections viewable for just 100 yen and free admission to the rest of the museum.
Wonderful place to be explored calmly! Many statues strategically placed throughout the gardens and inside we can see many rooms with several exhibits to be enjoyed at the same time!

Outstanding art museum with fabulously cool collection of design chairs you can actually sit in. Modern art (Picasso, Monet, Pissaro et al.,) is beautifully accessible and you are allowed to take no flash photography. This is almost unheard-of in most private collections in Japan. I will visit again and again. The price for adult admission is only 200JPY. The downstairs exhibit today had local artists work- a huge photography juried show with outstanding work, even from high-school students. I especially enjoyed the other exhibit downstairs of locally crafted Saitama dolls. Each display is a separate artist’s work, only labeled with each artist’s name. I met two lovely women who were stationed at a table at the entrance and found out that the two women were two of the artists. They gifted me with a handmade bag charm!

Hawaiian restaurant
Restaurant
Eggs ’n Things is a popular restaurant known for its fantastic food and great service. The airy beachy ambiance adds to the dining experience, but be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes for a table, especially on weekends when the place is always packed. Reservations are not available for weekends, so arriving early and getting a ticket is recommended. The pineapple waffle and salmon avocado eggs benedict are highly recommended dishes.
Their potato, bacon, and cheese omelet was a hearty and comforting dish. The eggs were perfectly fluffy and wrapped around a generous filling of soft potatoes, smoky bacon, and melted cheese. The ketchup drizzle on top added a simple but nostalgic touch, balancing the richness with a hint of tanginess. Paired with their Kona coffee, the meal felt complete. The coffee was smooth with a clean finish, carrying a subtle sweetness that worked beautifully alongside the savory omelet😍

Good quality and service. No line at around 14:00 on weekdays. Weekday morning menu around 1,000¥ including a drink.

Eggs’n’Things is an all-day breakfast restaurant that was founded in 1974 in Hawaii. It creates a tropical and fun local Hawaiian vibe. We tried the Big Island Plate. It was huge. It looks smaller in the picture shown on the menu. We were pleased with our order and everything was great. However, we liked the grilled shrimps the best. They were sweet and very fresh. They were perfectly cooked. I would suggest the single fruit pancake for an additional ¥638 charge, so that you will most likely have tried many different things on the menu in a single visit. This is also good for your first visit.

Excellent place for brunch. This particular chain is always packed on the weekends. You can’t make reservations for the weekend so I would recommend coming early, getting a ticket and then doing a bit of shopping to kill the time. The eggs Benedict and omelette were amazing and very filling. The staff were kind and most spoke excellent English. Would recommend if you are in the area!

This restaurant is very popular and I understand why. The food was fantastic, the service was great, and I really liked the airy beachy feel of the place. I would anticipate waiting at least 15 minutes for a table. If your want to be seated as soon as possible when the restaurant first opens, then you may need to line up quite early. However, I would love to return and try more dishes from this place; the pineapple waffle and the salmon avocado eggs benedict I had were so good. This is a chain restaurant, so if you find yourself near another location of it go ahead and try it!

Udon noodle restaurant
Restaurant
Fujidana Udon is a casual Japanese restaurant located in Saitama, known for its quick service and delicious udon noodles. Despite being modest in size, the restaurant attracts a large crowd, especially during peak hours. The menu features standard meat soup udon with generous toppings like meat, green onions, and fried tofu. Visitors often find themselves lining up to savor the excellent taste of udon at this popular spot.
Simply the amount of udon is pretty big. You must be hungry when you come there. It was rainy day and we wait inside the car, we have to see the stuff coming off restaurant. You'll have to share a table, but there's enough space to make it not a problem. The staff inside the restaurant are also extremely efficient. They're also very friendly. The kitchen and cashier are very busy, but they're used to being busy, so they work evenly. Meat broth udon. Hot, sweet broth. The sweetness and umami of the meat and the sweetness of the green onions really stand out. The pork is delicious. The udon has a nice texture and goes down easily. How to enter: Write your name, number of people, and seating type on the registration form at the entrance. You will be called by name when it's your turn. There is a number on the edge of the registration form indicating which registration form you're on, so remember it to help you know when you'll be called. There is several waiting seats at the entrance and outside, but there is no air conditioning, so it may be difficult depending on the time of year. I think the turnover is relatively good. There are 7-8 staff members in the dining area, so it's no wonder the turnover is so fast. I envy those who live near this shop. (Translated by Google) I visited on December 16, 2024 at lunchtime. I came here around 11am, and the restaurant was full of customers. Above all, there are a lot of staff! This is why the turnover is so fast. The kitchen is lively and nice. I ordered a medium-sized broth udon. The balance of the firmness of the udon, the broth from the dried fish, the sweet pork, the fried tofu, and the green onions is perfect! I ate it all in one go. July 2, 2025 Lunch As usual, the restaurant was crowded and there was a wait of 8, but because the turnover was good, I was called in about 5 minutes. I had a medium-sized broth udon and kakiage. The sweetness of the pork is irresistible. The soup stock is not too salty, and the balance with the saltiness of the udon is just right. The restaurant is lively and great. I feel like there is a little less green onion than last time... The restaurant is fairly spacious, with counters, tables, and tatami rooms, but even on weekdays, the seats fill up quickly from the moment they open. There are a sufficient number of waiting staff, and their cheerful and prompt service is a delight. This time, I added the secret menu item "extra meat" to the "medium meat udon." I appreciate that the amount of dipping sauce changes depending on the amount of udon. The udon is chewy and has just the right amount of firmness. It also has a strong flavor. Musashino udon has an image of being very chewy, but it's not too strong and is easy to eat. And the dipping sauce is piping hot. The rising steam and the delicious aroma of the broth. The crisp spring onions, the sweetness of the pork belly, the fried tofu soaked in broth...all of it is appetizing. Delicious. I sprinkle a little shichimi pepper on the table halfway through the meal. This adds a great accent and keeps me eating. No wonder this restaurant is so popular. Satisfied. Visited in July 2025 (Original)

The restaurant was already quite lively, but I was able to enter and be seated without any problems, and my meal was served quickly, so I was able to enjoy it without any stress. Even the "regular" size was quite filling, making it an excellent value for money meal. Not only was it a large portion, but the chewy noodles were also very satisfying and left me feeling very satisfied. By the time I paid and left the restaurant, there was already a line waiting to get in, so if you're visiting at lunchtime, I recommend arriving a little earlier. The entrance to the store is narrow and gives the impression that it is difficult to enter, but the inside of the store is a nice and calm atmosphere. They have a lunch set menu even on weekends, and after ordering, they will bring out dishes other than the time-consuming soba and tempura, so you can enjoy the time while waiting for your food while enjoying a small bowl of delicious sake. The most important part of the dish, the soba noodles, had a weak aroma, but they were firm and delicious. Although it was a little over budget, I couldn't suppress my appetite due to the large number of items and ordered it🖐️ However,...too bad! What do you mean, soba? (ToT) Rather than being chewy, it was just hard, and above all, I couldn't feel the flavor of the soba 💦 As the side dishes other than the main course and the smoked duck were delicious, my expectations were not met. Soba - too chewy. Not tasty. Soba soup - not tasty even with soba soup. Tendon - the rice was soggy and not tasty, and the tempura was soggy that I don't think it was freshly fried. It's been a while since I last ate out, and I thought it was terrible. The counter seats let you hear the chatter in the kitchen. The soba I was looking for was disappointing. Like country soba, it is chewy and filling, but it has no flavor and tastes mediocre. It's not that it wasn't delicious, but it wasn't the flavor I liked. As a soba restaurant, it was better than its reputation. It might be a good idea to go there as an izakaya. 5 stars, once all single use items are removed (excluding current Covid 19 measures). Awesome food, good service, Western size portions (metric not US 🤭). Prices are mid-range and well worth it. English welcome. We will definitely be back. Since this is Corona-time, social distancing, masked staff, and regular disinfecting are observed.
