Museums
Krannert Art Museum, located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Champaign, is a vibrant hub for contemporary international arts. It boasts a permanent collection of over 10,000 works dating back to 4 BC, showcasing diverse cultures and artistic expressions. The museum features changing exhibits in various media and offers free entry. With its rich array of art from different periods and regions, it's a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts.
We recently visited this museum, which focuses primarily on contemporary art, and had a wonderful experience despite some galleries from the permanent collection being closed for renovations. The temporary exhibitions and available galleries more than made up for it and we spent about one hour enjoying the art. The collection of African artifacts, particularly the masks, was fascinating and helped us gain a deeper understanding of their cultural significance. We also appreciated the opportunity to view a rare, smaller Rothko and admired the works of Chilean artist Roberto Matta, whose pieces added a unique perspective to the museum’s offerings. One highlight was how clearly the museum labeled its new acquisitions. This provided valuable insights into emerging trends and artists shaping the contemporary art landscape. We were especially interested in the art for social change exhibition and seeing art from black artists. The section on lesbian perspectives stood out as intriguing and educational, offering a window into diverse experiences. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful, and maps and brochures were available to guide us through the exhibits. Admission is free, with donations encouraged. Public parking is available in front of the museum with special permit, though not required during the weekends. The museum also has water fountains and comfortable, clean restrooms. We highly recommend this museum and hope to come back soon!!

Absolutely amazing! This art museum was well put together and you could see the care that the team puts in to the preservation of the collections. There was a very cool Mediterranean exhibit downstairs, but overall, all of the artwork was interesting. A special shoutout to the staff all who were helpful and friendly. We were visiting from out of the state and they helped us to navigate some logistics.

Krannert Art Museum is a fantastic place to visit, and it's worth checking their opening hours before you go. The guides there are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, which adds to the overall experience. The museum itself is quite spacious, with numerous lounge rooms to explore. During our visit, we had a great time completing a scavenger hunt at the museum, although the real reward was immersing ourselves in the rich history it offers. My favorite sections were the fine Greek, Egyptian, and Renaissance art; they truly captured my heart! When you're there, make sure to read the captions accompanying the artworks, as they provide valuable insights into the portraits and enhance your understanding and appreciation of them. It is free to get in, however it’s worth donating to. ☺️

This museum is a hidden gem in Champaign. 🎨 From the moment you walk in, you're embraced by a calm and creative atmosphere. The exhibits are super diverse, ranging from contemporary art to pieces from distant cultures. Plus, the admission is free, making it even more accessible. Perfect for a cultural outing with friends or a relaxed solo visit.

A jewel of a little museum. It is a nice way to spend a couple of hours looking at a variety of art. I last visited this museum in the 70's and it greatly influenced my love for art today.
Lynda — Google review
DO NOT visit the museum. It was a waste of my time. There is no information anywhere to know that there are only TWO galleries open. Everything else is closed for "renovations". Again, I was not aware of this information till I had gotten there. It is not stated on the website at all. I drove from Chicago to Champaign thinking I would have access to a full museum. On top of that, I had to pay for parking which was ridiculously complicated. The meters do not take coins, you have to download a third party app just to pay. Very annoying. It felt cramped and uncomfortable. The only galleries that are open are very small. When I visited, there were probably 6 other people and that was enough to overstimulate me. On top of that, you have the security guards following you. Do not recommend going until the whole museum is open.
Brandon G — Google review
virtually everything a person with a brain/some taste might want to see is off limits until early next year. not worth a visit until early 2025 edit: it's almost August (i.e., summer) so now there's signs up saying most of it'll be open again... in the summer... which is right now. they were building something (drilling/hammering) during open hours while I visited, making it very difficult to contemplate the minimal art available.
M — Google review
There's no free parking here, and it costs $1.70 an hour, how greedy of the university. Edit: You also have to pay via third party, the parking meters themselves don't actually function. You don't simply put coins into a thing, you have to download an app, create an account, register your vehicle, and pay an additional fee to the third party, just to visit this museum without your car being towed. Second edit: The app you have to use to pay for the overpriced parking doesn't even accept Google Pay, or PayPal, or maybe even credit cards? Been attempting to get it to work for 20 minutes, but I guess I'm just going to leave. Very disappointing, because obviously parking should never have cost money here to begin with.

Nature & Parks
Playgrounds
Meadowbrook Park is a 130-acre expanse located in the southern part of Urbana. It was acquired by the city in stages since 1967 and features a variety of attractions, including a farm, play structure, restored prairie, gardens, and trails. The park's landscape includes recreated tallgrass prairie with winding trails and the Wandell Sculpture Garden.
Traveling with my dog (Labor Day weekend), this was a great road trip stop to stretch and enjoy a walk through the park with nicely paved paths. I parked in the Race Street lot and then stayed for an hour, to include: Hickman Wildflower Walk, Wandell Sculpture Garden loop, and back down the Wildflower Walk to the restroom and back to the car. Plan more time if you have kids with you (there's a playground) and/or if you want to walk the loop around the entire park.

This park is absolutely fantastic! Fun for every age! Rest areas. Restrooms. Handicap-accessible play equipment. There's even a wheelchair, stroller-friendly sculpture trail nearby! So happy we visited this wonderful park!!

They redid the park recently and updated it from the old wooden one to make it more safe and kid friendly. It is a fantastic park, very large and tons of things to do. They also have a ton of walking paths around the park.

This park is amazing. There are several sculptures and aesthetic structures along the path. The walking path is also huge. I wish I knew here before. This place is a hidden gem.

A nice park with many artistic structures. This park is very close to Orchard Downs university housing. There is a big walking loop with a track.

This is a great trail for walking, jogging, or biking. I walked the 1.55 mile trail almost every day I was visiting my family. Not too busy at 7 am. Saw deer almost every day.
Steve A — Google review
It's an Art / Nature mashup. Beautiful paved trail through stunning prairie. In summertime the prairie is a rainbow of wildflowers and berries. Large sculptures from a variety of artist scattered all throughout. Such a nice place to walk and run. Also features small sections of wetlands, stream, several side trails, pavilion, porta potty (👍), and large wooden playground.

Sights & Landmarks
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, home to the Fighting Illini, is a renowned research university with its own airport and a sprawling 160-acre arboretum. The campus, located between Urbana and Champaign, offers a delightful blend of historic architecture and public art. Visitors can explore the Main Quad's elegant landscaping, tree-lined avenues, and grand Liberal Arts and Sciences buildings.
I was in UIUC to see off my Nephew. The university campus is humongous . The college buildings are awesome , transport system within the university is great(sometimes it takes a long time), there are dedicated bike lanes and accessibility access almost all places they boast the biggest engineering library . The orientation program was good and informative, people seem efficient and I am sure teaching staff is also great There are quite a few frat houses and student quarters around the university The restaurant selection is great and the university also has multiple on campus food court, and surprisingly have a lot of good vegetarian options as well Students who really want to learn well can do wonders. Great place to study and enjoy

Fantastic place to go to if your pet is having a medical emergency. I'm not even going to bother anymore calling my veterinarian when this happens since they always make you wait several days. Staff is very polite and genuinely concerned for the animals welfare.

As a parent, it’s that time when we help our children make decisions about the next phase of their lives. For me, sending my child off to college at UIUC was one of the most emotional moments. On the first day, I couldn’t help but cry as I left her on campus, much like I did when I dropped her off at kindergarten. The feeling of letting go is never easy, but looking back, I can say with certainty that UIUC was a wonderful choice for her. From the very beginning, the campus and community have offered incredible support and opportunities. The professors and lecturers are amazing—engaging and truly invested in their students’ success. There’s always academic help available, whether it’s through tutoring, office hours, or student groups that offer additional support. I was always impressed by how approachable and willing the faculty were to help students succeed. What stands out most, though, is the sense of safety and care on campus. There’s always someone available to help, even late at night, whether you’re walking around and need assistance or have a concern. UIUC truly seems committed to the well-being of all its students. For those of you wondering about religious and cultural connections, there is a Hindu temple just 10 minutes away from campus, providing a sense of community and belonging for students who want that connection. To other parents considering sending their child to UIUC, I want to assure you—it’s a fantastic campus. Don’t worry. The support, education, and experiences your child will have are priceless. You can rest easy knowing they’re in good hands!

It's ok. Campus is very large and seemed like it needed a lot of work. I understand that it's an old university, but with all of the graffiti, seemed like we were walking around Dailey college in the city. Felt very unsafe. We had a tour and intro for the college for possible incoming Freshman, and we has to park on the street and pay rather than park in the parking lot (for staff only) that was right behind the place where the presentation was being held. And, the lot was practically empty. We asked about where we could eat lunch on campus, and the tour guide told us the eat at the dining hall, so we did. $14 per person later we found out that 95% of the food options were not available/closed. So we had options of veggie burgers, turkey corn dogs, and pizza that was worse than frozen pizza. They say that you experience the Freshman 15 and gain 15 pounds, but with these limited food options it seems like you won't have a problem with that. Send your kid here instead of fat camp to lose weight. Poorly run Freshman presentation and amenities. Tuition is very high even for in state students.

My Alma Mater and forever my home. The U of I was a fantastic experience overall. Met friends for a lifetime, taught by brilliant professors, and indescribable opportunities.

Let’s call it like it is: UIUC doesn’t just compete — it dominates. In engineering, computer science, agriculture, and business, it’s a national powerhouse with global reach. This is where Fortune 500 recruiters go hunting, where innovation is the baseline, not the goal. You don’t just attend Illinois — you level up there. UIUC is for the builders. The doers. The ones who don’t just dream — they design, calculate, code, and deliver. It’s home to Nobel laureates, Turing Award winners, and world-changing startups. The Grainger College of Engineering alone outpaces entire universities. The Gies College of Business? Modern, aggressive, and built for the real world. Let’s not kid ourselves: UC Davis can’t touch that. UC Davis sells itself as laid-back excellence. But in reality? It’s a fog of overhype. It talks the talk but limps through the walk. Underwhelming outcomes, lackluster academic energy, and a culture that discourages edge or initiative. You don’t get sharpened — you get smoothed out, filed down, and boxed in. Meanwhile, UIUC puts steel in your spine. You’re surrounded by peers who bring the heat, professors who challenge you to produce, not just parrot, and opportunities that actually lead somewhere. Want to intern at Tesla, Amazon, or Google? That pipeline runs right through Champaign-Urbana. The ROI? Massive. UIUC consistently ranks among the top public schools for return on investment, and grads don’t just find jobs — they’re recruited. In tech, finance, engineering, and research, the UIUC name carries real weight. UC Davis? A shrug, at best. And let’s be honest — the Midwest may not have California’s zip code, but it has grit, affordability, and focus. No fluff, no flash — just results. At UIUC, you’re not just another number crammed into a lecture hall. You’re a talent investment — and it shows. So here’s the truth: UIUC gives you tools. UC Davis gives you traffic and bureaucracy. UIUC builds leaders. UC Davis breeds compliance. Choose fire over fog. Choose Illinois…

Visited for a quiz bowl competition but almost all sidewalks were coated in ice which made it quite treacherous to walk anywhere. Seems a northern school would take more care in winter safety. Other than that it was pretty interesting with the old style architecture compared to my university.

The Spurlock Museum, also known as the Clarice V. Spurlock Museum, is an ethnographic museum located at the University of Illinois. Established in 1911, it houses a vast collection of over 51,000 artifacts from various cultural heritages and geographic regions. The museum's exhibits showcase ancient Egyptian art, Mediterranean works, modern African art, East Asian artifacts, European pieces, Mesopotamian objects, and items from the Americas.
This museum is absolutely amazing! We explored all the galleries with fascinating art from all over the world, but were excited to see those from Ancient Mediterranean and the Americas. It was outstanding. The museum offers a wealth of history and culture. We enjoyed learning about Latin American art, including fascinating pieces from Bolivia (with a surprise of a sensory experience!). The Native American art displays were equally impressive, showcasing the richness and depth of their traditions. A standout feature of the museum was the interactive screens, which provided detailed insights into rare objects, such as a fragment of the letter of James from the New Testament. We also loved listening to music created with ancient versions of violins and other string instruments, which added an immersive element to our visit. Admission is free, and parking on the street is free on weekends. There are puffs and cushions in the galleries to have a moment of gentle rest. The facilities were spotless, and I greatly appreciated the availability of sanitary pads in the restrooms—a thoughtful touch. The staff were incredibly kind and friendly. We deeply enjoyed our visit and highly recommend this museum for anyone interested in history, culture, and art!

Nice and tidy museum at UIUC. There's no section on India in Asia section, which is very surprising. Maybe the Museum should get some funding to add an India specific section and that would be nice.

A really great place to visit if you are at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. They have different sections according to continent and a great collection. Place is free for anyone.

Smaller, but splendid, museum with LOTS of varying exhibits, artifacts, and traditional ethnic garments of various cultures from around the world. In addition to special exhibits, the museum houses 9 permanent exhibits, They are organized by geography and cover hundreds, if not thousands, of years of human history from North, Central, and South America and the Ancient Mediterranean. On the 2nd floor are East Asia, Southeast Asia, Oceania, Europe, Africa, Ancient Mesopotamia, and Ancient Egypt.

Spent about 30 minutes here, wish I’d had more time! It’s full of unique items and history. Free to enter, although donations and encouraged. I went on a Saturday afternoon, right before closing, and it was almost completely empty and very quiet! Exhibits are (mostly) based on regions of the world. I especially appreciated the effort of transparency with where the artifacts were acquired, although I’m not sure if there’s been any pressures or requests for returning items.

Fabulous free museum with an eclectic group of culturally significant exhibits. I learned a lot on this quiet Tuesday before thanlsgiving

This was a great little museum. If it's free it's for me! My oldest son loved the mummy they had on display. They showed pictures too of what they thought the mummy looked like if he/she was still alive. Many of the items they had on display were replicas, but just as fun to look at. I wouldn't say a great place for young children. Easy to sound an hour here.
Will — Google review
Not bad at all! Only 5% of their collections (artifacts, sculptures etc) are on display due to the space crisis. What a shame! There are no entry fees, however, it’s my request to everyone to donate as much as you can so that they can keep up the good work for years to come.

The light-filled space features colorful art and large windows, creating an inviting atmosphere for reading or using the computer. Visitors can enjoy amenities such as TeenSpace, a coffee bar, a small bookstore, private meeting rooms, and free internet access.
Wonderful children's section. Really nice, clean, safe, lots of books and toys. Places for parents to sit and possibly get work done while keeping an eye on the kiddos. Clean spacious family bathroom with stools for hand washing. Hand dryer wasn't too loud. Water fountains with stools and a place to refill your water bottle. Just a wonderful place to beat the heat and enjoy time with kiddos.

Great atmosphere, resourceful and something for everyone young and old. Beautiful murals, art work,Cafe, comfortable seating, teen lounge, children section, great business accommodations upstairs with computers. They have extensive collections of books, CDs, movies etc. If you're bored look no further!!

The building is very nice and the staff have always been kind and helpful. They have a cool store downstairs with items being retired. But they don't seem to have the proper resources (security staff) to deal with people who can't act right. Mentally ill people hang around and it's not unusual for someone to be disturbing half the library with their schizo babble in the evenings. In addition, the wifi gets overloaded during peak times and stops working, and noise really carries through the building.
H K — Google review
Amazing staff very friendly and helpful. Beautiful open layout inside with seasonal decorations and wonderful images to look at. Huge selection and variety of books of all genre and ages. Lots of new technology including multiple game systems, 3d printers and Mac computer with beat making technology. 11/10 Most incredible library I've visited in my adult life. Even has a little shop to buy snacks and drink.

The staff is super friendly and helpful. The facility is updated and clean. There are activities outside of the usual day to day library atmosphere. There is a teen center, which is actually very cool! There are reading programs and fun events every month. What a great resource for our community!

The Champaign Public Library is easily one of the most inviting public places in the area. Every visit feels comfortable from the moment you arrive because the free parking makes everything so convenient. It is always easy to find a spot, which already sets a good tone before you even walk inside. The building itself is bright, spacious, and thoughtfully designed. There are quiet areas for reading and studying, and there are also open spaces where people can work, relax, or meet with friends. The overall atmosphere feels warm and calm. It is a place where you can stay for a quick visit or spend an entire afternoon without ever feeling rushed. Inside the library, there is also a small café that serves coffee and quick bites. It adds a cozy touch to the experience. Being able to grab a drink or a light snack makes long study sessions more enjoyable. The café area is clean and comfortable, and it blends nicely with the rest of the library space. The book collection is impressive as well. Whether you are interested in fiction, nonfiction, research materials, magazines, or audiobooks, you will find a wide range of options. The library’s catalog is well organized, and the hold system is efficient. If you prefer digital reading, their online resources are also extensive and easy to use. Overall, the Champaign Public Library feels like a true community center. It is clean, modern, comfortable, and managed with care. Whether you want to study, pick up books, enjoy a cup of coffee, attend events, or bring your children for activities, it is one of the best places to spend time in Champaign. I always leave feeling satisfied and grateful that a place like this exists in the community.

This is a pretty nice public library. The staff members I've had interactions with have all been absolutely wonderful to me. A few weeks ago, I lost one of my wireless earbuds inside the library. I searched high and low for a couple of hours and couldn't find it anywhere. I knew my missing earbud was inside due to the fact I could see it disconnect from my phone when I walked outside, and reconnect upon walking back inside. I came to the conclusion my missing earbud was most likely gone forever. 🥺😞 After a few weeks, I decided it's worth a shot to check back at the front desk with lost & found. My hopes were not high, however to my surprise, they returned my long lost earbud to me safe and sound. I am forever grateful to the unknown staff member who located my lost item, and the staff member who returned it to me. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart. You guys / gals are all awesome and it's great to see a public entity as well ran as the Green St. Champaign Public Library.

Black Dog Smoke & Ale House is a popular BBQ spot located near the University of Illinois campus in downtown Urbana, IL. Housed in a restored train depot, it offers delicious ribs, brisket, and burgers paired with craft beers. The restaurant also boasts a brick four-season porch for outdoor dining with open air from large windows and radiant heating units to keep guests warm on chilly nights.
The best brisket we have ever had. It was moist and full of flavor. I also had some delicious fried sweet potatoes. The Mac and Cheese was typical as were the BBQ beans. Great selection of draft beers. Friendly servers and a great atmosphere that is located in an old train station. They had some outdoor seating as well. I want to come back and try their other selections now.

Excellent meats and sides, especially the Twice Baked Potato Casserole. I tried the Georgia Peach and Texas sauce. Both were ok, nothing special about them. Food came out very quick but server never checked back until it was time to pay.

Love it when you just open Google Maps and find a great place to eat. Black Dog is one of those places. Great food and drinks. I ordered a Coco Sunrise that came with coconut liqueur, and Hubby ordered an Oscar's Old Fashioned. Both were very tasty. We shared the Blackdog Cornbread that comes with pulled pork mixed into the batter and the 3 meat combo (chicken, burnt ends, and smoked catfish) along with a sweet potato and green beans with tomatoes. All we can say is, WOW! So delicious and meats were so moist. We really enjoyed talking with our server.
Teresa P — Google review
We were really looking forward to trying Black Dog BBQ in Champaign, but unfortunately, it was a huge letdown. The staff who served us were friendly and attentive, but the food itself was very disappointing. We ordered the two-meat combo (brisket and pulled pork) with mac & cheese and twice-stuffed baked potatoes, along with a side of beef ribs. I was so excited to dig in since we love trying different BBQ joints, but everything lacked flavor. There was no seasoning, no smokiness, not even basic salt—it was shockingly bland for BBQ. The ribs, brisket, and pork all tasted the same: plain and underwhelming. Even the sides didn’t stand out. This was honestly one of the most flavorless BBQ meals I’ve ever had. Really disappointed, especially given how much we enjoy good BBQ elsewhere.

This is an awesome establishment in the Champaign/Urbana area. In regards to the amount of access one could have for BBQ, this is one of the best you'll find given the area. The servings are proper large and you get a really nice bang for your buck. The service was great and the staff was friendly which goes a very long way for me.

This is a very nice location. The food was good and exactly what I was expecting. The meat was nicely smoked and the sauces were good but had some room to improve. A great place to satisfy the BBQ craving.

The smoked Jackfruit was really good, I really wish there was a more traditional BBQ sauce that I could have as a vegan. I tried the Lexington dip and Carolina vinegar, which didn't really do it for me. The sweet potato fries were the best I've had. The Texas Caviar was also great.

The food wasnt good At all honestly. The restaurant it self is very cute and charming. The staff were very nice and helpful our server did a great job. But the food on a Sunday afternoon was terrible. Brisket was DRY DRY the rib tips were decent. The brisket queso didnt have even a smidge of flavor to it. The bloody mary was the worst one I've ever had. Only really good thing were the fries

We just visited for a family brunch on a Sunday (different menu than Saturday Brunch). Everyone at the table loved their food. The drinks were great too. Probably the best Sunday brunch in town (Sun Singer would come in second place). We love this place. (it does get loud in here, particularly in the evening, but they do have some private rooms for largish groups).

A great lunch option in Champaign. The menu is reasonable, the meat was excellent, and the fries were delicious! We ordered the special Valentine's dessert, a Red Velvet cheesecake, and loved it. The portion sizes are generous.

We were blown away by this place—easily the best shrimp and grits we’ve had north of I-10, right here in Champaign, Illinois! The food was outstanding, but what made the experience truly memorable was the service. From the moment we arrived, our waiter set the tone with warmth, enthusiasm, and genuine interest in our journey. He spoke with pride about the General Manager and head chef, and his passion for the menu was contagious. He described the upscale dishes with affection but made sure we knew the burgers were just as carefully crafted. His service was perfectly balanced: attentive without hovering, present without pressure. He gave us space to enjoy our meal without rushing us, and when it came time to discuss dessert, he brought the same thoughtful energy. A rare combination of inspired cuisine and gracious hospitality. We’ll be back.

Well - I had high hopes. But it’s just not good. Food wasn’t good. Service was slow and mixed up orders and requests. We had a group of 5 and we were told we couldn’t put tables together to sit inside unless we wanted a booth - even though inside was pretty much empty. We were 5 individuals there for a work dinner and a both just didn’t make sense…. Outside was fine and ultimately better - but why not let us sit inside? Corn appetizer was probably the best item. Sprouts were ok but very oily. Cheese curds were lot squeaky and tasted like small mozzarella sticks (not a bad thing). Surf and turf tacos were extremely fishy with no sign of any turf. Winter arugula looked like they picked it up off the floor from last week. Won’t be going back.

Haven’t written a review in a while, so here goes! Been wanting to try a full meal at Big Grove Tavern, although I have had some delicious appetizers there in the past. The ambiance is stylish and the outdoor seating is very appealing. The Southwest salad we had was fresh and very tasty, and the avocado in it was high quality and perfectly ripe! The pizza was surprisingly good, especially for a restaurant that is not your traditional pizza hangout. As for my main dish, I ordered the Osso Bucco; braised pork shank over mashed potatoes, sautéed carrots and green beans, with a chipotle gravy. I was absolutely delighted at how delicious and well plated it was! And, as a semi retired food photographer, trust me, they hit the mark with the presentation! I highly recommend this establishment. I can’t wait to return to try another item! PS, our waitress Emma was outstanding, kind and personable!

Went here for lunch. Such great attention to detail. Service was amazing. Waitress knew how to time everything being brought up, was attentive to us. She came out regularly to check in with us. She knew the story behind each dish. She sold us. One friend got the Osso Buco, another got the mushroom ravioli, I got the green curry wings special and pineapple boat special. We also got the soft pretzel bread and both sets of oysters to try. We also tried the slushies. IAlmost a $300 tab for a party of 3 10/10 would do it again. Later that evening we went to another high-end restaurant in Urbana, and the experience was extremely disappointing in comparison. Big Grove officially has my loyalty. Thank you!

Sushi restaurant
Sakanaya, located on Green Street in Champaign, offers a stylish space where you can enjoy inventive sushi, ramen, Japanese entrees, and sake. The restaurant has gained popularity for its attention to detail in both the menu and decor. The owner's travels through Asia have influenced the restaurant's ambiance, while the chef's experience in New York City restaurants ensures high-quality cuisine.
Great experience! The rolls were huge and tasty. The server was also very quick and always ready to help us out if we needed anything. We had a group of 6 and they were very accommodating for us and split the bill perfectly.

Food is pretty good, shrimp shumai were delicious. I got a roll, only note is the pieces would be cut a bit smaller in order to fit into your mouth entirely, were a bit too chunky. Everytime I go there is a wait however, no matter what day or time it is, which is a bit annoying. Reservation definitely recommended. Went on my birthday and they brought out a complimentary birthday dish, which was adorable and honestly a favorite. Overall best sushi spot on campus though.

Tried various rolls and other entrees with sake. Everything was really good. Lots of options on the menu and all had prices that were very reasonable. We ordered the OMG rolls (shrimp, shrimp tempura) and it came with the best surprise: it was on fire. Literally. It was an unexpected and cool touch and definitely enhanced the experience and dish as the roll got progressively smokier. Very cool seating for a place like Champaign as they have a second entrance with a completely different dining room— as you’ll see in some big city restaurants. Overall a good pick if you’re looking for somewhere nicer. Would recommend making reservations on busier days.

Had a great time at Sakanaya! I got the Kamikaze Roll and it was super tasty—really fresh and full of flavor. You can tell they use quality ingredients. The vibe in the restaurant was really chill and inviting too, which made the whole experience even better. Definitely recommend if you're in the mood for good sushi and a nice spot to hang out.

The staff were very friendly, and the restaurant was crowded. As for the food, the miso soup had a rich flavor, but the pork cutlet was slightly overcooked and the meat was a bit tough. The rice was somewhat soft and tender.

Sakanaya remains a nostalgic favorite from college days. The Willis Tower roll was just as satisfying as ever, layered with unique flavors and textures in every bite. The Aburi nigiri, especially the seared scallop and salmon, were rich and flavorful with a nice char, though the sushi rice could have used a touch more vinegar and softness. Overall a solid and enjoyable experience, and always a treat to revisit while on campus.

OH I LOVED IT. My boyfriend and I got the “i love salmon” and the volcano roll. The portions were huge and beautifully presented. Lots of big fish pieces!

Mexican restaurant
Maize at the Station is a Mexican restaurant located in a former train station, offering a warm and convivial atmosphere. It is known for serving authentic Mexican cuisine with flavors from Mexico City, Michoacan, and Guerrero. Popular dishes include the Burrito Pollo and Quesadillas, accompanied by expertly-mixed margaritas and cocktails. The restaurant is highly regarded among locals and students in both Campus and Downtown areas.
We were a family of 4, new to the area looking for something to eat. We decided to give this place a try and we were not disappointed. We usually get 3 entrees for 4 people, so we were very surprised to see how much food we ordered when it arrived. They only do one free round of chips and salsa, but honestly you don’t even need to fill up on chips because HALF an entree will fill you up. We added zucchini blossoms to the fajitas and enchilada, which added an interesting and unique flavor to it. Whether you’re a student of nearby University of Illinois or just visiting, I’d highly recommend this place!

Second time here. Wanted to try the Mega Tlacoyo. Didn’t like it that much. The flavor was muddled. The meat was the strongest flavor and we didn’t like it. However, the smoked mezcal drink was fantastic! The chips and salsa and order of guacamole was excellent! The chicken and shrimp enchiladas were tasty too. Our server was kind! We will visit again when we are in town.

I’d definitely recommend this spot for fresh, authentic and yummy Mexican food. Home made chips from quite thick tortillas were a little oily and not enough salt for me. Salsa definitely home made and very tomato forward and served warm. Hot sauce also homemade but also warm. Nice wide bar with number of seats up front and then an open seating area with mostly 4-top tables. Fun vibe with music playing. Really appreciated the mix of proteins as well as serving styles. The Vulcan and Quesadilla were my favorite. Happy hour deal was awesome - half price draft and also 3 tacos for $10 - essentially any style or protein. Will be back to try more!!

This place is great! The corn tortillas are organic and homemade with local corn. The presentation is great and service was awesome! Atmosphere is very nice too! It’s clean and has a nice outdoor space as well. Excellent food! Pictured is the chicken enchiladas with mole.

Great place, Met an old friend here, he was on a visit from out of town. His niece said this was a goo place so we met here. I ordered the flautas and my wife ordered the 2 taco meal. Everything tasted great and everyone was happy with their choices.

Excellent Service. Simple, delicious food. The dishes were made with fresh ingredients and then prepared with excellent technique which allowed the flavors of the dishes to showcase themselves. This precision was revealed in all aspects of the experience. Even the iced tea was fresh, bright, crisp, and clearly made with care. Very satisfying without being heavy. But, honestly, even with that backdrop, those corn tortillas stole the show with effortless aplomb. Rich corn flavor. Served piping hot. Ah, but the texture…. the way they yield to the tooth... Listen- no joke-I have been an aficionado of Mexican cuisine for over thirty years now. I have been to countless restaurants serving Mexican cuisine stateside and abroad. I have eaten in fancier places with more dramatic food, but I have NEVER had better.

Great spot for Mexican food with a nice variety of dishes, drinks, and desserts! The restaurant is beautifully decorated, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. I’d definitely come back to try more items on the menu. Just a heads-up—the churros come in a small portion (3 pieces), so they might be better enjoyed solo than shared. Also, the flan has a cinnamon twist, which is a unique take but different from the traditional flavor. Overall, a lovely experience!

Maize is easily my favorite Mexican food location in the area. All the food is fresh and is excellent for brunch, lunch or dinner equally. They offer blue corn tortillas instead of the usual yellow corn also, which I appreciate greatly they're delicious. I tend to get either the pechugo polla (chipotle chicken) if I'm hungry or some of the steak tacos for lunch. Everything I've had is very good.

Seven Saints is a stylish American tavern with wood-trimmed interiors, offering creative burgers, craft beer, cocktails, and wine. The restaurant has the ambiance of an old British pub but with a unique American twist. It's known for its extensive selection of American beers, including seasonal choices. While sliders are their signature dish, they also offer a variety of other delicious items like pretzel bites, cheese curds, sandwiches, salads, soups and desserts from a local bakery.
This place was amazing for lunch!! I got the triple lunch plate and it was great to try each dish. The service was fast and friendly. Additionally, the atmosphere is super cool with old architecture and plenty of seating so there was no wait. I highly recommend if you’re looking for a lunch place!

PROS: open late (11 PM), welcoming and attentive customer service, beautifully served dishes, all reasonably priced. Elegant dark wood decor provides that refined British feel. Music volume is extremely pleasant both for conversation as well as to enjoy the music. PRO TIP: ask for Bella to be your server.

The menu is quite simple, honest, but we found the sandwiches a bit dry and without anything 'special'. My Club Sandwich was one of the simplest versions I've ever tasted. It looked like bread with cheese and slices of turkey breast. The waffle fries were okay, as was the cheesecake. Our waitress was very nice and helpful. We were in the additional room and the wall was extremely dirty, full of dust, which gave me an impression of uncleanliness. Overall, an okay place.

Good upscale pub food. Solid flavors and definitely would go back again. The sliders all served a variety of options and each one was unique and delicious.

Passing through Champaign, there were many restaurants to choose from. We couldn't have chosen better when we walked into Seven Saints. The atmosphere, service, food and value were all great and collectively made this one of our favorite stops on a long trip. Unique decor and friendly, hardworking staff in constant motion. I enjoy a menu where I can try several items in one meal. Slider, salad (excellent and not skimpy), and broccoli casserole. And good drinks! When presented with the bill, we both commented about how good the food was and our surprise at the price. Go enjoy.

So I'm that most annoying of things: a vegan. On top of that, I'm a teetotaler. So when I announced these things to my waitress - Jessica - I was expecting to be told it would be very difficult to serve me. What happened next was astounding. She consulted her supervisor, and the two were able to lay out for me what items were suitable with a complete list of ingredients and allergens! The sliders themselves use a vegan-friendly bun, and the patty can be exchanged for a plant-based one. The tofu tacos simply need to have the sour cream held. The sweet potato fries (and I presume the normal ones) are fried using the same oil as other foods, so people should take that into consideration should they wish, but they're otherwise okay. I ordered the tofu tacos and the sweet potato fries. Excellent meal! The music being played was Nintendo-themed covers and remixes, which I was definitely able to appreciate!

First time here. The wait time for a booth was very short, even on a busy night. The drink, Papa Don't Peach, was great. The Black Jack and Fried Chicken Sliders were awesome. The tab was very affordable. Great spot for a date night.
