Museums
The Museum of Ojibwa Culture at Old Mission Saint-Ignace is a seasonal city museum located in a 19th-century mission church near Lake Huron. It offers visitors an immersive experience into the history and culture of the Ojibwa, Huron, and other tribes who inhabited the region. The museum features a replica of a Huron longhouse, exhibits, videos, sculpture gardens, and unique craft items for sale.
Google is inaccurately stating that this is closed. It is not. They even have big signs that say "Open" outside of the museum. This is a nice, small museum. It has a lot of information packed inside. There's a gift shop with great items. My kids liked the little kids' coloring area. The people working there are friendly.
Melissa D — Google review
Stopping in to check this out was a smart decision! There is no charge to walk the grounds and go through the building, but there is a donation box. I suggest dropping a couple of $20's in the box. Supporting any museum is a good cause in my book. The gift shop area is full of locally handmade items such as dream catchers, knives, jewelry, etc. The ladies behind the counter were very friendly and helpful. The artistry and craftsmanship of the items for sale are amazing! It was well worth stopping by and spending some time here!
Michelle A — Google review
I can't say enough about how exceptional this cultural museum is. I was there for hours and could have stayed longer. The information and resources available are wonderful. The book shop selections are extensive. The outdoor gardens and sculpture park are great. I especially liked the medicine wheel garden. The staff was very friendly and helpful as well.
Cori S — Google review
Excellent educational opportunity to learn about both the Ojibwa culture/history and some information about Father Maquette. The indoor exhibits way back need better lighting but the other displays and videos were very very good. The store across the street (on the lake shoreline) has some great views and is stuffed with tshirts and trinkets etc. including a large selection of moccasins.
Allen S — Google review
Excellent museum. Very clean, great displays, a lot of native history and friendly staff. No admission price but accept donations to keep the museum open.
Yvonne E — Google review
The Museum of Ojibwa Culture is both enlightening and somber. The museum is donation based, self-guided, has some videos to watch, and includes interesting artifacts. It is small but teaches quite a bit. The outside has informational plaques, buildings, metal artwork that explains traditions and several gardens. The first time I went, I wondered why I never learned about this in school. As an adult, I knew the information, but this museum told the story of the Ojibway people in a factual way that I had never heard before. It made me get curious and ask more questions. Later while co-teaching a 7th grade social studies class, we spent 3 days on all things “Indian”; Trail of Tears and the Indian Removal Act. I can see how I might not remember content from my own 7th grade social studies class. The self-guided aspect of the inside museum and the grounds allows for reflection. Each time I visit, I find something new to learn. This space is wheelchair accessible for the museum. The outside buildings and gardens are spread out without a path.
Renee B — Google review
A good look at what was taken and who was lifted after the genocide of MANY first Nation peoples. None of the atrocious things like cutting out the tongue of any speaking their native language - how many buried at this museum? Left with a heavy heart.
Toni M — Google review
Nicely maintained small museum with informative displays both indoors and on the grounds. They also have a good selection of books for purchase related to the history and cultures of the local native populations. Admission is by donation.

So happy to find this facility for my mother. The manager and staff are wonderful. They were so accommodating in getting her moved in and worked with us every step of the way. I would recommend them to anyone that is looking for a clean, comfortable, and welcoming place for your loved ones that need the extra care.

Lighthouses
Wawatam Lighthouse is a picturesque and accessible lighthouse located in St. Ignace, Michigan. Situated along the Huron Boardwalk in Wawatam Park, it offers stunning views of Lake Huron and the iconic Mackinac Bridge. Visitors can easily reach the lighthouse with a short walk from large parking lots, making it one of the more accessible lighthouses in the area.
Nice spot to walk to after dinner or ice cream. Our kids enjoyed the park nearby and beautiful sunset!
Maggie — Google review
Bugs are so bad here- so bad that you cant walk without being in a cloud of them and the closer the the boardwalk then closer to the lighthouse you got the worse it became! Bug spray helps with bites but does nothing for walking directly into the clouds. Unfortunate because it really is a nice walk and beautiful lighthouse.
Chemicalclowns — Google review
The view was absolutely amazing! The surrounding area was super beautiful, and the lake nearby was just perfect. The whole place had such a peaceful and beautiful vibe. An amazing spot to visit great experience overall. Definitely don’t miss it!
Aishwarya R — Google review
I absolutely loved this place! Gorgeous views, a calm and very family friendly place. There is a splash pad, benches and even a cool sun clock.
Alex L — Google review
Cute little lighthouse with some information provided on the boardwalk. There is a massive collection of bugs around the base of the lighthouse and the telescope there does not adjust and the lens is dirty.
Gwendolyn N — Google review
Our recent visit was a return visit from a couple years ago. Still a great place to walk around with some amazing history, but this year the engine was missing from the tracks and some of the pictures are getting brittle and/or fading from the sunlight. This park presents an important part of our history to the next generations. I hope there is funding to bring the rail car back and re-generate the pictures on display.

History Museums
Father Marquette National Memorial is a serene and lush green space that commemorates the 17th-century French explorer. Situated on a rise overlooking the Straits of Mackinac, it offers an interpretive trail showcasing the meeting of French and Native American cultures in the North American wilderness. The memorial features history stations, a monument, and beautiful hiking trails through verdant woods, providing unobstructed views of the iconic Mackinac Bridge.
Wonderful natural space dedicated to the history of Father Marquette and his missions and the Native people of the area. Free with a State Park pass. Lots of history stations, the monument, gorgeous hiking trails through the lush green woods, and beautiful, up high, alternate views of the bridge. Definitely worth a visit. Restrooms on site, most if not all is accessible by wheelchair. Be prepared to walk a bit. Very peaceful and serene.
Thomas — Google review
As of July 6, 2024 the park has its entrance blocked off for repairs to the memorial. However, at the Straights State Park ranger station they informed me that it was ok to enter. It is about a quarter of a mile walk to the site. A low frills place even before the museum burned down the memorial could use major renovation, but it is in a wonderful location and the interpretative trial intersects with some great views of the straits and bridge. Likely not worth a trip in itself but if you are in the St. Ignace area it’s nice place to pay respects to one of Michigan’s founders.
Danny T — Google review
Admission here is included with Straits (or any other) State Park though, to be completely honest, we saw one other vehicle in the lot when we pulled up, and they were gone by the time we left about 30 minutes later. There's a couple different places where you can get a pretty decent, unobstructed view of Mighty Mac. We followed what appeared to be a trail at the southern end, but it kind of opened up into a field which didn't entirely feel like it was part of the park, so we turned back around. In hindsight, it looks like you could walk all the way down to Bridge View Park, though you'd have to cross at least one intersection and walk along the road for a short distance. The memorial to Fr. Marquette was also quite informative, discussing the really early history of French exploration in the area, including on down the Mississippi.
Ryan M — Google review
This is a nice little park with hiking. There are some historical signs to read in a little pavilion. There is a scenic overlook of the bridge. There are restrooms. There is a cool map where you can see the journeys of Father Marquette.
Jessica F — Google review
This park seemed unappreciated. We saw no other cars in the parking lot when we came and left. Walking about 15 or less you get to some great views of the Mackinaw bridge thru the trees.
Alex W — Google review
Learn a little about history. French explorer. He mapped the Mississippi River. Beautiful park, nestled in the nature. Easy trail loop with information signs about native plants, scenic look out. The memorial monument talks about the trip. Benches, picnic tables. A must stop.
Michelle T — Google review
Awesome place to visit beautiful walkways awesome parking and the views are spectacular and to us Native American people this is called Turtle back it is where we hold our yearly Pow Wow with the Mac people and salt tribe
Jamica D — Google review
Nice small National Park area to learn about Father Marquette and his explorations in the late 1600s. Took us about 1 hr to get through the informational walking trail and to see the memorial. A good place for a quick stop while traveling through. The National Passport book stamp is a short drive to the campsite office while buildings are closed for COVID. Views of the Mackinac bridge at an overlook on the walking trail.

Bar & grill
Mackinac Grille & Patio Bar is a laid-back lakeside restaurant and bar that offers classic American and regional dishes. The outdoor seating provides a stunning view of Lake Huron and the Straits, making it an ideal spot for dining al fresco. The menu features a mix of familiar favorites and unique surprises, such as the whitefish Caesar salad and the whitefish patty melt on grilled rye.
At the beginning of May, it's difficult to find a decent, open restaurant in St. Ignace. After not being particularly impressed with the restaurant north of town, we tried the Mackinac Grille the next day. Conclusion: It's worlds better. You feel like a welcome guest, not just a paying extra that you're just trying to get rid of as quickly as possible. The food is prepared with heart and soul.

Saturday night in busy season. Expect a wait. Be patient with your server. It is all well worth it. Had the mile high meatloaf on a 90 degree day and that is some incredible comfort food. My son had the shrimp platter and loved it. Kids menu is a bit small. This restaurant does things the old way with no call ahead or reservations. Nothing wrong with that. Would highly recommend!
John J — Google review
It's a quiant and cute place. I ate on the patio, it had a nice view of the lake. The food came out in about 15 minutes. I had the Mackinac burger which was good- menu has good options. Lots of fresh whitefish options, if that is your forte. The service was... okay. Nothing to write home about. Not friendly but not mean. Just seemed like our waitress didn't want to be working, which is fair lol. There is a ice cream shop next door and a light house and boardwalk to go on. Very cute and fun. Recommend to anyone wanting lunch or dinner. They even have a cute gift shop with knick knacks and other treats if that's what your into!
Makalah — Google review
I had the poor man's whitefish and a side salad. The meal was very delicious, and i would definitely order it again. There was a bit of a wait, but that's expected for a big event weekend, and being that the food is so good. A nice was to pass time while waiting for a table is the small shop with various items for purchase.
John K — Google review
We walked in and got seated right away. We got the Mile High meatloaf and it was excellent so good. We also got a French dip and onion rings. The French dip wasn't that good a little overcooked but the onion rings were awesome . We will definitely stop there again.
Cherie W — Google review
Nice little grill we stopped at for lunch before heading to the Wawatam Lighthouse. I tried the Mackinac burger with fries. It was a large burger well cooked and very satisfying. The Mrs chose the Italian Grinder and slaw it was a very good sandwich. All in all it was a great lunch spot and just a short walk to the lighthouse.
Lloyd M — Google review
We spent a week in michigan’s UP. We had several different restaurants and stayed in several different motels. At Mackinac Grill and patio bar my wife and I both ordered different shrimp, entrées. The shrimp was prepared perfectly and well seasoned. The only reason I would probably not go back and eat there is strictly logistical reasons. If you’re in the area, you would not be disappointed. The menu had many options to chose from. They also have a nice little gift shop.
Armyguy1SG R — Google review
We both ordered whitefish entrees. Both good. Service lacked a bit. Our waitress was quiet and not engaging. Atmosphere was ok. Table was sticky. The place/people lacked passion for the business. Gift store was cute, lots of sales too.

Restaurant
Lehto's Pasties is a family-owned bakery that has been serving delicious stuffed pastries since 1947. Located west of the -75 freeway, this no-frills establishment offers a simple menu with a handful of items that are definitely worth trying. The pasties are packed with beef, potato, rutabaga, and simple seasonings, all wrapped in a light and flaky pastry that isn't greasy. Customers rave about the perfect crust and flavorful fillings.
Friendly owner and great food! I came in right before hopping on the ferry and found the beef pasty a delicious and mess free breakfast to have on the way to Mackinac Island. The pasty reminded me of a samosa, with a flaky crusty exterior and a soft and savory filling; in other words, very tasty.
Tim C — Google review
Great meat pocket. Kind of reminded me of a Runza with a pie crust, instead of bread. Regardless, it’s good. Make sure to get the gravy as well. Outdoor seating available or take it to the beach.
Stephanie F — Google review
A Cornish pasty is a hand-held meat-and-vegetable pie developed as a lunch for workers in the ancient English tin mining region of Cornwall. A pasty is a "must try" when visiting Michigan's Upper Peninsula area and Lehto's is one of the most popular places to enjoy one. My wife and I ended up trying both the Beef (a blend of beef, potato's, onions, and rutabaga) and the Chicken (chicken, potato, onion and carrot) with a side of gravy. Both outer crusts were flaky and light while the fillings were hearty, savory , peppery, and aromatic. Letho's Pasties delivered a very satisfying dining experience.
Howard S — Google review
First time having a pastie and Lehto’s did not disappoint! Bobby was great with the recommendations, the beef was definitely the best one! The bread was crispy, the texture of the beef and potatoes together was perfectly smooth, and the gravy was delicious with each bite.
Larissa G — Google review
First time here. Very good pasties. I could tell this was going to be good just taking it out of the wrapper. Starting with the homemade flaky crust, the meat to veg ratio was perfect. Contents were sliced thin, not cubed or minced, and well seasoned which made for a delicious meal. Solid gravy to round out the meal. Will stop again next time I'm there
Rob S — Google review
Was told by a few people around St Ignace who has the best pasties and this place was repeatedly suggested. Being off season the parking wasn't bad. The business bwas very busy. No much room to sit and eat on the inside. The pastie was delish. Buttery and great comfort food. It's my new "must stop" place when going up north.
Rebecca H — Google review
I've had several pasties, I get one each time I go to the UP. This was the best I've had so far. The pastry was soft and flaky and the fillings were generous and flavored to perfection. The ultimate comfort food!
Brandon — Google review
We were in a couple of weeks ago and we loved the pasties. We had the beef and the chicken. The beef was our favorite (we wish they would have recommended the gravy). We also picked up a coleslaw. So good! Great service. We would eat here again.

I didn't stay at the hotel but we ate at the restaurant. The food was great. I got the fish tacos. It was more of a wrap. But it was really good. My spouse got a burger and said it was great. The fries were perfect. The waitress was great. She was friendly and she got our order perfect and didn't have to write anything down. The food came out pretty quick and it was hot. We would definitely go back.

Lunch. I love their food!! I normally dine here for dinner during business. Today was vacation lunch. The pike perch wrap was delicious!! Lightly breaded to perfection. My, favorite whitefish dip is so delicious. Enough to take home. Service is always prompt and courteous. Seating on the big porch overlooking the lake across the road.

My husband and I have been here twice this month. First time we ordered burgers and fries. The best we have had anywhere in a while! Second time, I had chicken tenders, and my husband had shrimp. Also very delicious! Since we didn't want to leave our hotel we ordered a pizza to go, for dinner. Best Pizza Ever! This place rocks with good food. Staff is very friendly and kind. Stop in and have a meal. I don't think you will be disappointed!😃
Jacquelin B — Google review
We were seated immediately, but the wait for our server was pretty long. We finally had to ask someone to find her. Once she got to us, she was great. The food was average at best. My cheeseburger was very overcooked, no garnishments at all. My husband said his whitefish meal was great.
Heather R — Google review
Great spot in town over looking the lake and Mackinac Island in the back ground. Service was really good and the food came out fast. I got the wings tossed is Ray Ray's Yooper Hot Sauce and they were amazing, some of the best wings I've had in the UP.
Chad W — Google review
The room we were in was at the annex. 7 rooms by themselves. The room is incredibly small, especially when you consider how much we were being charged for it. The bathroom is super small, with a round 3' shower that I had to get out of the shower to soap up, then step back in to rince off. We didn't have hot water for two days, and when reported to cleaning staff, nothing was done. The next day before we headed out, we told the front desk. When we came back at 7pm, and asked for some kind of comp, was told no. Wasn't expecting a free night or anything, just something to show that they messed up and are trying to make it right. Back to the room. Not one dresser to put clothes in, not one drawer, nothing. There is a small 3x6 foot table with one chair. Can't put much on that at all. The blinds don't work, so people can see in the room from the outside, even though I tried several times to make it not see through able. The lack of working plugs is another sore spot. With so many choices for places to stay, stay away from this place. We could hear the wait staff/cooks outside of the restaurant, based on our location. From smoking marijuana several times a night, to talking loudly, I will never eat at this place. Worst decision I have made in a long time. Didn't know, now I do.
John B — Google review
Food was decent. High prices. Greeter was not friendly. Did not talk. Just stared at us.... Waitress was in a hurry all through are lunch.. Hit and run and not very talkative either. Not a terrible experience but staff needs to be trained on how to be personable and friendly.....
David W — Google review
we didn't stay there. we had dinner. 3 different plates for the 3 of us. None of the meals were good. Steak was almost raw. sandwich was soggy and childs pizza looked like a microwave brand from the store. I don't think I've ever given a poor review but I won't go back there.

Mexican restaurant
Jose's Cantina is a vibrant, colorful mexican restaurant that serves up an array of Mexican staples as well as beers and tequila drinks. The food here tastes wonderful and the best part is that it is also great take out. The view of the islands from the restaurant is also beautiful.
Great spot if you're craving Mexican food! They also have a nice outdoor seating area facing the lake—perfect for enjoying the view while you eat. The drinks are excellent too—I ordered an Old Fashioned, and it was spot on, with just the right amount of alcohol for a nice kick without being overpowering. The service was fast and friendly, and our waiter, Dan, did a fantastic job. If you're coming with a big group, I recommend calling ahead to check if they take reservations. Even if there's a wait, the food is absolutely worth it.
Pathik P — Google review
Food was delicious!!! My fiancé and I were greeted then sat down shortly after entering, and given the option of indoor or outdoor seating. We ate outside, it was a little windy but the view was beautiful and the atmosphere was warm and festive. Our server Sherry was very polite and did her job well. We were both very impressed with the food when it came out, my carnitas were very tender and juicy! I also got a NA blueberry mojito which was very good. Overall, Jose’s Cantina is a very great place to stop and eat, it is just a bit pricy, a bowl of queso with our chips was $10 which was a surprise to us, I would just read the prices on the menu if you are worried about spending a lot! Good experience.

Good Mexican food great views. Extensive menu and great chips and salsa. It was windy, wet and cold when we visited Oct 10, 2025 but I think on a warm clear day the views of L Huron and Mackinac island would be sensational especially from the patio when open.

When I tell you this is the best Mexican restaurant I've ever had... it was sooooo good the Carne Asada plate was to die for! Dont let the look of the outside fool you its not as small on the inside and the atmosphere??? So chill and everyone is so nice. We came here for our honeymoon dinner and ugh. I stayed down the street from this place and ended up eating it every night for dinner. The BEST EVER Mango Habanero chicken tacos. The Chicken jerk tacos were amazing as well. My husband had steak and chicken fajitas and said they were really good. I will be back if I'm ever in the area again.

Honestly, I had been looking forward to coming here and was sooooo disappointed when I did. The French toast, which is arguably one of the easiest things to make was under done. The corned beef hash was a JOKE. Literally the smallest portion imaginable. It was just terrible. I would not recommend this place.

Stopped in for breakfast before hitting the golf course, and very happy we did. Nice little step back in time with the retro style and music choice (which was a great touch). I had the home fries w/ gravy, and the gravy did not disappoint. My husband enjoyed one of their homemade cinnamon rolls. Those are a meal in itself! Staff was very friendly. Would definitely come back if in the area again.

Average breakfast joint which offers breakfast and lunch but no dinner due to unavailability of staff. The staff here and specially the owner is exceptionally positive and her positivity is contagious. We ordered chicken nuggets, veggie omelette and milk for kids and everything was below average.

Adorable diner, complete with friendly, funny "snappy" service! I loved all 3 of the ladies running the place. Since I showed up a few minutes before closing time I just grabbed a few things "to go" and it was delicious!! The cream of mushroom soup is one of best I've ever had, and the thick hand cut french fries were excellent!! They even gave me a couple of the homemade potato chips to taste, which were excellent as well. I'm coming back soon!!

Awesome place for breakfast food! Susan was a wonderful waitress and very friendly!
Robb G — Google review
I’ve been coming to this restaurant since I was a kid and never had a bad experience—until now. This visit was incredibly disappointing. Our waitress (a blonde woman) was rude and dismissive the entire time. She never once said “thank you” or “you’re welcome,” and only came to our table to drop off drinks and food. There was zero friendliness or basic courtesy. After we paid, she actually shoved past me to grab our plates and cups, which was shocking and completely uncalled for. I was also given a takeout box with something gross smeared around the rim—totally unappetizing and careless. For the first time ever, I didn’t leave a tip. That’s not something I do lightly, but the service made it clear it wasn’t deserved. I’ve always enjoyed this place, but this experience left a really bad impression.
Spark — Google review
This place needs a few days off for a deep cleaning. It would make a huge difference. The servers wouldn't be tripping on things, the customers would be more comfortable. Its dirty. We left before our food came because we were worried about getting sick. And you cant have your kid putting the silverware together. Dude was rubbing his nose and touching the forks/knives customers would later use. Just take a day or two off, close down, clean up.
