The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a significant tribute to the victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. It offers visitors a chance to gain insight into the tragic events through various exhibits, including audio messages from victims and video recordings of the perpetrators. Despite being emotionally demanding, it provides a foundation for understanding Rwanda's complex history. The memorial also showcases art and documentation related to the mass killings that occurred in 1994, offering visitors an opportunity to comprehend this dark period in Rwanda's past.
Historical place; also quite humbling. Pictures are not allowed inside the memorial out of respect. No charge to access the location. Voluntary contributions can be made. The 'auditory guides' can be rented for a fee, if one requires an auditory guided tour.
Temilolu S — Google review
For me, it was a very emotional experience to see first hand what actually happened to people during the genocide. Visitors were not allowed to take pictures inside. But all in all, it was an educative visit.
Chima E — Google review
Very well done memorial to honor the victims of the Rwanda Genocide. Be prepared to be overwhelmed with the sadness of what happened. It's impossible to understand how people could turn against each other in this way.
Judy M — Google review
Go there's with some emotional preparation as this place will move your soul. The memorial captures the brutal memories of the past so poignantly that one can't stop the tears flowing from their eyes. Every section of the memorial is such a haunting reminder to the history of this beautiful country. I would love to go there again sometime soon.
Robin K — Google review
It's a place where you cannot come out unscathed. Impossible!!!! What happened here is beyond human imagination. Only God knows. On a positive note though, it's amazing to see how the people have healed, reintegrated and moved on. It teaches you forgiveness is possible. It is divine and humanly possible too, I just witnessed it. Well done on refinding one another and preferring peace to anarchy and violence. Choosing to build y our country. May God bless you even more
Tapiwa M — Google review
Very moving & emotion visit...The images & videos inside are very powerful...sometimes extremely difficult to look at ( out of respect filming & photos are not permitted inside the building's main museum) The site is also a final resting place in them for many Rwandan remains for the 1994 Genocide
Richard W — Google review
The Kigali genocide memorial offers chilling details of the event of 1994. You get firsthand information and it's a good avenue to learn and remember what really happened. But it doesn't stop there, it shows how much progress Rwanda had made in just three decades after that event.
Sy M — Google review
Very moving. Just another senseless tragedy that spans generations in our awful world. There's no cost, it's just recommended to donate at the end. If you end up using the audio guide it's a strongly suggested donation of $20 usd or 30000 rwf..

Market
When visiting Kigali, Rwanda, make sure to include Kimironko Market on your itinerary. This bustling market is a unique shopping destination housed in a warehouse complex where vendors offer a wide variety of products, including fruits, fabrics, shoes, clothes, art crafts and more. Located in the heart of Kigali City, it's a must-visit for tourists seeking souvenirs or everyday items.
Kimironko Market, locally known as Kimironko Isoko, is one of the best places for diverse shopping in Kigali. The market is well-organized into sections, including meat, vegetables, fruits, flour, hardware, clothing, tailoring, utensils, cosmetics, electronics (sales and repairs), and a Rwandan handicrafts section that attracts many tourists. Both locals and foreign residents prefer shopping here as prices are significantly lower compared to supermarkets and malls. Bargaining is common, allowing shoppers to get even better deals. The market is always lively and bustling with activity, providing an authentic experience of Rwandan local trade. Tourists visiting Kigali should not miss this vibrant marketplace, as it showcases the entrepreneurial spirit of small vendors making a living through their businesses. Kimironko Market is a government-authorized marketplace where shop owners pay minimal rent and applicable taxes. Previously, street vendors selling fruits, vegetables, and clothes caused congestion and safety issues. The authorities addressed this by relocating them to markets like Kimironko, ensuring a more organized and secure shopping environment. The market’s strategic location makes it easily accessible, with multiple roads leading to it. Kimironko Bus Station is right next to the market, making transportation convenient for shoppers. Additionally, many cab drivers and moto-taxi operators find customers here, contributing to the local economy. Overall, Kimironko Market is more than just a shopping hub—it’s a thriving center of trade and livelihood for many in Kigali!

Clean and neatly arranged and organised. Food produce from fruits to Vegetables, grains and dairy can be found there and at a very reasonable price.
Sy M — Google review
Busy open market with all kitchen needs and more. The craft part is kept for tourists, colorful, local, quite tough to please all business, and the bargains are endless
Oren S — Google review
As a tall umuzungu, the sellers can be pushy and they definitely try to overcharge. Bring your negotiating skills. However, I love the market. You can find lots of neat things and you can get good prices. The vendors really work together and I appreciate the way that they have a sense of unity. I do recommend.
Steve Z — Google review
Nice cultural experience but be aware of tailoring clothes. It takes much more time than the promised 1 hour and the quality is not really good. I suggest to just get the fabric and let it tailor somewhere else with more professional designers. Anyhow, recommend a visit and buy small souvenirs, as usual the appropriate price is at 30-40% of the starting price.
Wakumi P — Google review
Was excited for this market but couldn't even enjoy it. The minute I showed up I had 10 people talking in my ear trying to sell me stuff. No words helped. It just go worse. I'm a confident person and got so annoyed. Then tried to purchase some fruit (2 mango and 2 oranges) and was told it's 20000RFC ($13). Told the dude absolutely not. This should be $2 at most. I ended up paying $3 but they damn well the locals don't pay that. Overall waaaaay to many people trying to jump on selling something that you don't have space to even look.
Hans R — Google review
Very Clean, organized and busy. The market is big and has a structured layout. There are bureau de change outlets outside as well as bikes and cabs.
Temitope O — Google review
A great market. Just be careful you will be charged a whole lot more, once they know you are not local. You are safe with local guide.

Art Galleries
Nestled in the heart of Kigali, the Inema Arts Centre is a vibrant cultural hub that has been championing Rwandan artistry since its inception in 2012. Founded by two brothers dedicated to nurturing emerging talent, this contemporary gallery showcases an impressive array of works from both local and international artists. With ten resident artists creating across various mediums, visitors can immerse themselves in a rich tapestry of creativity.
Inspiring place - fully recommended to pay a visit. There is amazing art everywhere, kids rehearse local dances at afternoon and the vibe on Thursday happy hour is great. Hopefully will be back!
Eugenio I — Google review
A cool art space featuring art from around Africa. They offer workshops from time to time. They also support local nonprofits
Fiorella C — Google review
I visited Inema Art Center recently, and it was an amazing experience! The space is filled with vibrant, thought-provoking artwork that beautifully reflects Rwanda’s culture. The local artists’ talent really shines here, and the atmosphere is so welcoming. Definitely a must see in Kigali!
MUHOZA R — Google review
The gallery is not very big. I loved the art though and the art projects happening . The staff are cool too . They offer complimentary coffee and tea too !
Cynthia K — Google review
The place is cute but we felt a bit scamed. Not mention of a price anywhere on the website or on site but 15.000rwf fees entry, (30k for two!) If we had seen that, we would not have come :/ 15k is really expensive for just 3 rooms. We visited other free art center that was really good. The paintings are really expensive too, feel like this place is for rich tourists only, too bad. I wonder if the local pay the same price too or if its only for "foreigners" So, great place if its free or less expensive, but considering the price, not worth it, sorry :(
Pénélope L — Google review
Nice place but I feel it's a bit too commercial. Seems they ask different price to different person. We were told 10000 RWF per person. I rather recommend Ivuka Arts (also called NP arts) which is just 10mins walk from here. There is much more local and real. No entry fee, they have much more paints, the people who draw the paints explain the idea behind and you can see real artist painting there. They also organize dance and paint workshop for local children. If you have money, better to donate what you want there to help real people.
Jenny H — Google review
It is a wonderful space to explore art from the region. The guide was knowledgeable and friendly, offering insightful information about the various pieces and artists. The gallery itself showcases a wide range of vibrant, contemporary works. You can also buy pieces made by locals talking art classes here.
Muteti M — Google review
Interesting art pieces made by the Rwandan youth. The 5 stars 🌟 are also definitely for the burundian guy who welcomes visitors. He was very polite and friendly, gave a nice introduction to the exhibits, and reminded people that the big dog at the entrance was friendly 😀 Also, they sell art tools. If you are looking for canvases and paint 🎨 pass by!

In the vibrant Nyamirambo district of Kigali, you'll find the Nyamirambo Women's Center (NWC), a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering Rwandan women through education and training. The center's skilled artisans create beautiful children's clothing, accessories, and home decor from traditional kitenge fabrics, which are sold to support community programs. Visitors can also join walking tours to explore the neighborhood's culture and history.
If you want to learn more about Rwandan history and Kigali specifically, you should definitely take one of the tours or courses offered. Very informative and it contributes to a good cause. And the walking tour includes delicious lunch! The crafts on their shop are top, I left with a huge bag of very unique presents. Recommended.
Genesis M — Google review
The walking tour is fabulous....highly recommend! The work the centre is doing is admirable and life changing for many women across Rwanda. We were a party of 4...adults and teens... duration was perfect for us. Learnt lots about Rwandan culture and history. The lunch was very tasty and it was interesting to get an insight into local home life. If you are looking for a walking tour if Kigali please support the NWC by booking a trip! Much better value than private tours, whilst supporting the amazing work they do.

Lovely place to shop for souvenirs to bring home. This are is different from the neighbourhoods we usually visit as tourists

Fun tour! We enjoyed the local lunch. But our favorite part was looking around the shop and getting some one of a kind pieces.
Soraia A — Google review
The Center has a really interesting range of activities and is run by very friendly local people. We did the cooking class and learned to make some delicious Rwandan dishes. Highly recommended.
Aidan W — Google review
Contacting them was easy and fast. I booked the walking tour, which I enjoyed. Someone said in one review that "random places" have been shown but for me it also had the charm of getting to know the area and normal life. The shop had cute things and I bought a skirt. They are helpful, but I still felt the ladies in the shop to be a bit cold (Angel and Mary were great though). The lunch was amazing. I would do it again. I was done with tour and lunch at around 12.40 pm.
Anni K — Google review
This is a small shop selling quality hand-made crafts, made on-site. I went on a Saturday so the sewing machines were not manned. They also offer workshops there (pre book). The items are expensive for Rwanda, but the quality is high and the cause worthwhile. Get your Rwanda gift shopping done in one place on one visit. Yes! They accept credit cards
Yolanda H — Google review
A women’s cooperative run by women and by women . It stores all hand made good . The prices are a bit on the higher end but the love, intention and the quality makes it worth it . Each item is handmade /hand sewn/ hand embroidered and you can see the ladies at work in the room adjoining .

The Rwanda Art Museum, located just four kilometers from Kigali International Airport, is housed in the former presidential house and showcases a diverse collection of contemporary artwork by local and international artists. The museum aims to provide insight into Rwandan creativity and arts, both modern and traditional, through various artistic practices such as music, theatre, poetry, dance, and visual arts.
I was there in the evening for an exhibition and wished I had come during the day to appreciate the compound as well. Great work done by the team there. Great place to visit at a reasonable fee.
D O — Google review
I recently visited the Rwanda Art Museum, formerly known as the Presidential Palace Museum, in Kanombe, near Kigali Airport. The museum, built between 1976 and 1980, was once the residence of two presidents between 1980 and 2000, offers a unique glimpse into Rwanda's history and culture. The ground floor exhibition, which featured old pictures from the early colonial period, was a highlight of my visit. The photographs showcased various aspects of life in Rwanda, including fashion, music, social life, and architecture. I was particularly fascinated by the rare color footage from the 1950s movie "King Solomon's Mines," which was shot on location in Rwanda. It's a shame that this exhibition is only temporary, as it provides a valuable insight into Rwandan culture. The top floor of the house is dedicated to contemporary art, but unfortunately, the pieces are not curated or accompanied by explanations, which made it difficult to appreciate their significance. The house itself is impressive, and it's interesting to see what a presidential palace looked like. The gardens are also beautiful, and visitors can explore them at their leisure. For an additional fee, you can visit the closed-off area where the remains of President Habyarimana's aircraft are preserved. Although there's not much to see except for a few plane parts, it's still a poignant reminder of the country's turbulent past. What made my visit truly enjoyable was our knowledgeable guide, who shared many stories about the house and Rwanda's history. The guide's expertise added a rich layer of context to the museum, making the experience even more memorable. Overall, I would recommend visiting the Rwanda Art Museum, especially for its unique exhibitions and historical significance. While some areas of the museum may be lacking in curation or context, the guides are excellent, and the house itself is worth exploring. Tips: - Be sure to check the exhibition schedule, as the ground floor exhibition is temporary. - Consider paying the extra fee to visit the aircraft wreckage, but be aware that it's not an extensive exhibit. - Take your time to explore the gardens and the house, and don't hesitate to ask your guide questions. I hope this review helps, and I look forward to seeing more exhibitions and improvements at the Rwanda Art Museum in the future!
Marcus M — Google review
You can visit the site of the plane crash that started the genocide in 1994. This is very interesting and gut wrenching. The museum itself is the former presidential palace, which is now an art museum that features local artists. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, but the art felt a bit toned down given the vibrant culture scene in Kigali. So maybe it could be a bit spicier - at least for my taste. But, if you have some time before going to the airport , I would definitely recommend a visit.
Gerald S — Google review
Nice but was very quiet. Pictures weren't allowed in the museum. We saw the debris of the plane that crashed close to the former presidents' residence.
Bisola O — Google review
The museum has so many paintings and art from many local artists. It was interesting how we had to remove our shoes to get in, at least the time we went there, so it would be nice to go there with socks. It's 1500, to visit the museum and 10k to visit both the museum and the plane crush site ( my opinion it's not worth it) The time we visited there was no kids activity but there's a room for kids to color, paint which is good. It will be great to call in advance if you want to take your kids there. My kids enjoyed running outside. It is also a good venue for weddings, and there was a tennis court.
Ineza D — Google review
Interesting visit and approach here, the reception staff will guide you through the entire indoor visit. She has asked the question though so you can get guidance or go on your own. I thought it was interesting to have the guide, some of the insight in Rwandan culture was basic while there is so much more to tell so they can increase the learning process especially for first time visitors to Rwanda. The art work is of an interesting diversity yet rather limited in expo still. Definitely interesting to see (at least we can imagine a bit) how the presidents used to live there in a massive house with many facilities and in-house decorations ( and that about 40 y ago and earlier). The 2000 fr extra are worth it to see the parts of the plane that was shot down in 1994 ( who doesn't remember this news), half of them are still in the original spot, the others were moved to that closed section. Interesting thing to observe are the tennis field and open space used for fighting sports coaching, the swimming pool has not been restored which could be a nice extra for the local community.
Vince L — Google review
This museum is fairly new, but there's still a lot to see and learn. We're not allowed to take photos inside so you'll have to go and enjoy it yourself.
Myra M — Google review
The place opened my eyes to art in Rwanda. This visit and the guidance and explanations of the tour guide made the place come alive, I felt sad, happy, scared and joy all just by immersing my self in the stories told by the arts. Please ask about the art depicting the story of Mugarura, Enjoy :-) . FYI, check the pic with announcements, one in particular, you have to remove your shoes before going inside the house.

Located in the lively Kimihurura neighborhood of Kigali, Repub Lounge offers a taste of authentic Rwandan cuisine in a contemporary African setting. The restaurant is adorned with locally made furniture and artworks, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Guests can enjoy a selection of Rwandan favorites such as sambaza, matoke, roasted goat, and fish steamed in cassava leaves while sipping on Virunga beer at the bar.
FINALLY! A authentic African restaurant, that everything MATCHES! The atmosphere, the food, the service and the prices! This restaurant has to be HANDS DOWN, one of our favorites so far in Kigali. Coming from America we don't know to much about African food. But what I will suggest this place to anyone with or without knowledge! The appetizers are GREAT! The main dishes we excellent! We even stepped out of our comfort zone and got the sombaza fish from lake Kivu! Great choice! The "Pili Pili" was great as well!

My husband and I love coming here for lunch! Service is so slow so what we started doing is calling in when we are on our way to pre-order. Food is authentic and consistent every single time! Our favorite is sombe, rice, sambaza, beef stew. No ambiance during lunch but I’ve heard Friday dinner time there’s a live band. Will 100% go back here

We had a lovely dinner here and our waitress (Olive) gave us great recommendations (the eggplant) and offered even better service! Definitely a must if you’re visiting Kigali

Setting: Charming and nostalgic, with eclectic decor and a view that is sure to impress. Cuisine: Delicious and flavorful, with a focus on fresh ingredients. The curry and ginger rice is a must-try. Service: Attentive and not intrusive. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and they are always happy to make recommendations. Recommendation: A great place to go for a special occasion or a casual meal with friends. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is charming, and the service is excellent. I was looking forward to trying the complimentary garlic bread. However, I never received an off to give it a go.

Poivre Noir is an upscale bistrot restaurant in Kigali, offering a cozy and romantic dining experience with elegantly presented French cuisine infused with Italian and African influences. The outdoor terrace provides stunning panoramic views, making it an ideal spot to savor unique produce such as fresh seafood not commonly found outside of Kigali. With its exquisite decor, excellent service, and diverse clientele of locals and expatriates, Poivre Noir stands out as one of the top French restaurants in the city.
The best curiflowers soup I have had in this year. It’s about up market but absolutely worthy every penny you spend there. Very convenient for dinner dates for its quite and stand alone. Even the music selection was just perfect. Can’t say enough about Poivre Noir. It’s a quite and small place so you might need to make reservations before for you will find it full.

We’ve LOVED this place for years but our last few visits the food quality has really declined. The flavor is no longer as robust as it once was. The presentation is still exceptional but the thoughtfulness is gone. The carpaccio was cut so thickly it was like tartare. The initial bite they gave to every customer used to be a delicious soup and grilled bread. Now it’s a doughy fried corn fritter. The service is still exceptional but I am hoping they can improve their kitchen once again to reach the standard they once had.
Lauren J — Google review
I loved the cozy and intimate ambiance of this place. The food was good, but we had an issue with dessert not coming as described on the menu since some ingredients were missing. It would have been nice to be informed beforehand so we could decide whether to go ahead with the order. Otherwise, it was a lovely experience!
Hellen B — Google review
The food is not great. The place does not look great. The prices are not moderate. They give you only a byte of cabbage and avocado cream, like a joke. The vegan burger was not tasty enough. There are way nicer restaurants with a lot better food, with much better prices, like The Hut for example. I do not recommend this place.

Decadent and delicious! One of my favorite restaurants in Kigali. I have eaten here and ordered delivery a few times. The burger picture was at home. I even enjoyed their jerk chicken. Juicy and flavorful, and reminded me of home :)

Fusion Restaurant in Kigali offers an elegant poolside fine dining experience with international cuisine. The restaurant provides a modern African culinary experience with expansive views of the city as a backdrop. It is known for its romantic ambiance and is located at 2 KN 90 St, Kigali, Rwanda. The restaurant's opening hours are from 8 am to 6 pm daily, and the average price per meal is around $9 USD.
My husband and I had a delicious meal with excellent service during our visit. Our server was accommodating and took great care to ensure we had a fantastic first meal in Kigali. The menu is unique and full of interesting flavor combinations. We opted to start with risotto balls and pasta dishes each for our entree. We then shared the lemongrass panna cotta (which was refreshing and flavorful) and sampled some banana beer and homemade Ginger ale. Service is top notch and we were even provided complementary tasting spoonfuls from the chef and warm, eucalyptus infused towels to wash our hands before the meal. The outdoor dining, interior design and general ambiance is excellent. Don’t miss this foodie gem in your quest for a great dinner in Kigali!

Fusion Restaurant in Kigali offers an upscale dining experience with a wide variety of drinks and foods. While the restaurant boasts a pleasant atmosphere and an impressive menu, it's important to note that the prices are notably high compared to other establishments in the area. This may explain why some groups choose to have a brief visit and then promptly depart after enjoying just a small drink. Upon entering Fusion Restaurant, guests are greeted with an elegant and sophisticated setting. The ambiance exudes a sense of refinement, making it an ideal spot for special occasions or gatherings. The attentive staff members contribute to the overall experience, providing professional service throughout the visit. Fusion Restaurant's menu showcases a diverse range of drinks and culinary offerings. From creatively crafted cocktails to fusion-inspired dishes, there is no shortage of options for those seeking a unique and flavorful experience. The quality of the food is commendable, with each dish carefully prepared and presented with attention to detail. However, it is worth mentioning that the high prices at Fusion Restaurant can be a deterrent for some patrons. It's not uncommon to see groups visit and then quickly depart after enjoying only a small drink. The steep prices may limit the accessibility of the restaurant to a wider audience, making it more suitable for those with a larger budget or looking for a lavish dining experience. If you are willing to splurge for an extravagant meal or special occasion, Fusion Restaurant may be worth considering. However, if you are price-conscious or prefer more affordable dining options, it may be advisable to explore other venues in Kigali that offer a similar culinary experience at a more reasonable cost.

We had a really nice dinner here while staying at the Retreat. It was because of a heavy downpour that we decided to stay at the hotel for dinner and we sat by the pool under shelter. Our waiter Patrice was so nice and very helpful. We had a lovely time chatting with him and the service and food was delightful.

Good service, nice decor, relaxing environment, next to pool and different seating choices. Food was ok. The waiter was soft spoken so I couldn't hear him well. Creamy soup was good but tiny serving. The salad was weirdly decorated, confusing to eat and no idea what mixes with what but does play with many parts of your taste buds. The duck was decent, sauce does not help with the duck flavour and the duck didn't have enough fats to properly flavour the meat but it was tender enough for the most part. Price is above average.

Very enjoyable meal of Asian fusion. The service was good. Food was lovely. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and the large art work is amazing. A lovely place for date night or if you are trying to impress someone special.

Best place in Kigali. My husband and I cannot get enough of this place. Every time we eat here it has consistent quality, flavors, service, cleanliness & hospitality. We always get the chicken spring rolls to start with amazing homemade sweet chili sauce, followed by the cashew chicken dinner, the sweet and sour pork ribs& the chili rice and iceberg garlic rice. We’ve had a number of the other plates as well but these are our favorites. You will not regret eating here.

Perched on the hillside in an area of other upscale restaurants, Soy isn't the best nor most expensive, but it is extremely pleasant. You'll struggle to find a more relaxing and enjoyable evening in Kigali, especially as the sun goes down and the open fire is lit. The menu is almost too extensive so, assuming you want Asian food (why else come here?) you will find things you like. The only disappointing dish of the many we had was the Thai green curry which - inexplicably- had only the look and none of the taste of a Thai curry. Strange. Never mind, everything else was nice.

Soy Asian is ALL 10s ACROSS THE BOARD! First glance at the menu we thought it was kind of expensive for Kigali. But soon we found out it was for good reason! The food MATCHED the price! All dishes are perfectly curated, ingredients top notch and you get exactly what the menu says. The food is OUTSTANDING, Although normally Asian Restaurants offer larger portions. Besides leaving the restaurant wanting more. We have no complaints!

Super food - we shared dumplings to start and both had pad Thai for mains. Great cocktails too. Friendly service and a minor issue with the bill was very quickly resolved. Beautiful surroundings in a garden and the interior design is amazing. Fun if pricey place to spend an evening.
