Te Rua Manga, also known as The Needle, is a prominent feature along the Cross Island Track in Rarotonga. This challenging hike takes you from the north to the south of the island, offering stunning panoramic views from The Needle and culminating at Wigmores Waterfall. It's recommended to wear good hiking shoes and be cautious of slippery areas with ropes for assistance. Transportation to the drop-off point is necessary as it's quite inland.
Amazing hike with stunning views. Do not attempt if you are not an experienced hiker with enough water and really good shoes. This hike is straight up DANGEROUS for those who are out of shape or inexperienced. If you hurt yourself, be prepared to self-rescue. If you are inexperienced, go with a local guide. Worth the adventure but only if you know what you are doing.

Yoshi made it up Te Rua Manga (The Needle) and what a climb it was! 🦖 The track was steep, muddy in spots, and definitely a leg-burner, but the jungle vibes were awesome — birds calling, big trees everywhere, and even some cheeky crabs along the way. The view from the top? Totally worth the effort! Rarotonga spread out below looked amazing — a real “level complete” moment. 🎮 Tip from Yoshi: good shoes, water, and start early before the sun gets too strong. Not an easy hike, but a fun adventure for anyone ready to power-up their day!

Can easily do a quick hike up and back in 1.5 hours if you’re used to a good bush walk! 40 minutes from the north end car park and I was at the viewpoint of the needle with a great view of the surrounding mountains. Then it took about the same coming back down. Both ways was a brisk walk and careful climbing, and i’d estimate it was about 3.5km return if I had to guess. Highly recommend this if you don’t want to do the whole trek but still want a fun challenge in nature. The climb up and down is basically vertical using tree roots but it’s all marked and was a great workout. Does require closed-toed shoes. Started at 10am and left by 11:30am to head for lunch.
Erika R — Google review
Absolutely loved this walk. We went for the island crossing with a guide and it was absolutely spectacular. Good shoes and plenty of water are an absolute must. Also some insect repellent would be quite handy unless you want to feed the local mozzies.
Ina S — Google review
Bring good hiking shoes. Quite slippery on the way down, has ropes to help guide steep bits. Get a ride to the drop off point, is quite a bit inland. Finish on the waterfall end is a good way to cool off. Is helpful to have someone around to pick you up and drop off. Take mosquito spray and water, small snacks. Don’t miss the arrows or the ribbons on trees, especially on the way down across the river. Go in a group of 3 or more if you can. Took us maybe 3.5 hours post rainy day so was slippery. Need to be able to climb over tree roots and thick bush, also withstand a slip or two. Very nice hike and would do again.
KSHORTT12 — Google review
Amazing view but holy heck, make sure you got your climbing shoes on. These aren't well formed tracks like in NZ. Well...actually, maybe like some tracks on NZ about 40 years ago. Rugged. Testing. Real hiking.
Steven D — Google review
Amazing hike and amazing views!! Definitely not for beginners or children. You will need to climb lots. Only do the needle if you are 100% confident with heights and dodgy climbs!

I definitely recommend doing this hike with a guided tour. We went with Maunga tours and it was excellent. Make sure you are geared up with the right footwear. It is one of the most beautiful places to visit.

Mountain peak
Te Rua Manga, also known as The Needle, is a striking rock formation located in the lush rainforest. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the island and surrounding ocean. While the hike to this distinctive peak can be challenging, adventurers are rewarded with spectacular scenery at the top. The trail through the forest leads to a mountain peak topped with a huge rocky outcrop, providing an exhilarating experience for hikers.
Have done this hike twice, in 2018 with a guide and 2019 with local family. Equally as stunning each time. Track upgrades were in place in 2019. Its sparingly signposted but if its the first time I recommend jumping on a guided tour with Pas treks which was awesome! The needle summit views are the reward and there is a small watering hole for a quick dip at the end.
Toni F — Google review
Truly a one of a kind hike. The course offers access to the summit from both the North and South sides of the island. Be advised that this hike is for intermediate to expert hikers. The north side will be steeper, shorter, and easier. The south side is longer and also much more technical with multiple ropes that are almost required to climb both up and down a narrow route. If you want a quick expedition, go North side up and back. If you are going cross island it's typically recommended to go North to South. Once you get to the top there will be extra credit points if you climb the Neddle itself which is not for the faint of heart as a slip from the rope system could mean a fall from over 50 feet. Always keep one hand on the chain/rope as you climb and you'll be fine. Good luck and enjoy!

Great walk, highly recommend.
Kara T — Google review
Nice hike. I would recommend to hike it with a tour guide If you are not a experience hiker. Got lost a couple of times on my way down. Don't hike if it was raining the day before it get quite slippery.but all in all worth to hike up.
Sabina K — Google review
Cool experience. Been on a lot of hikes and definitely found this one difficult as it's a steep hike and was slippery at times. Will pay to perhaps have a good stick with you as support as I found this handy. The ropes and chains towards the top might seem a bit daunting but is quite easy- just take your time. The reward is definitely once you reach the top and is spectacular 😍 The path to the track is a bit confusing. Once your parked up you want to take the road/path on the right. Follow path and keep going to the end then turn right and follow until you see a small make shift bridge leading into the forest.
LanaJD — Google review
We did the Rarotonga Cross Island Trek during our stay and definitely recommend it. Try to pick a day with some breeze. Start at the North (town) side, as there is a section going up hill which would be much more difficult to do in reverse. Take lots of water. At the end you can swim under the waterfall to cool off. It was easy to catch the bus back to town. Download the TransportMe app so you can track the bus.
Sam I — Google review
Most amazing experience. A rooster followed us all the way up. Went on a rainy day a few years ago and it was quite dangerous. But definitely worthit!!
Maisey C — Google review
Awesome walk, even for kids like 8 — 10 years old. Not sure if it is suitable for 5 years old. It has challenging bits. Don't walk it in your jendals as you'd be suffering from stuff falling into them. Close shoes are recommended. Can be easily done in shorten time, than the description suggests, but taking photos and enjoying the space takes time too. Also going down hill seemed even more challenging than going up hill. At least for people having issues with their knees. And it is really slippery (downhill) so don't underestimate the terrain.

Highland Paradise offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and explore the former mountaintop village of the Tinomana tribe. The site provides stunning views of the island's west coast and hosts authentic tours and captivating night shows. Visitors are treated to informative presentations on local culture and history, as well as traditional ceremonies that honor the land.
Asked our AirBnB host for something local and authentic and she recommended Highland Paradise....and she was spot on. We did the dinner tour, which begins with a presentation about local culture and history. Three people from the crowd are selected to participate in the next portion of the event, a ceremony outdoors where we ask the land to allow us to be there. After that, the guide takes you to an overlook where he explains Maori history of the three island tribes, how he is connected directly to one of the chiefs, how Polynesians from Cook Islands sent out explorers and eventually migrated to Aotearoa/New Zealand in 1350. After this portion, you move inside for food and traditional music. After you are done eating, the show begins with more history lessons and traditional music & dancing. All musicians and dancers are local students, which is a great link to their history and culture too! Parking was ample, the drive there is interesting, the views are beautiful, the history/culture are enlightening, the food excellent and overall a great time. Cannot recommend this enough! We even met the Minister of Justice and Education!

the best show ive seen as it portrays in depth knowledge of history and culture. the performance was absolutely sensational. i could feel the spirit of the mountains and my ancestors. truly an amazing experience. the buffet was good, quality was good not amazing but still good. highly recommend this cultural show especially if you love history!

Being on the tour was amazing and we learned so much from our guide who shared Matauranga and history through stories and hands-on experiences. The evening show was full of Ritenga, performance and amazing local food, all prepared by people who are wonderfully strong in their indigenous identity. Thank you so much team for your manaaki, it was so wonderful being at your spot !

Came for the island night incl buffet dinner - very informative culture show with traditional dancing. Drummers and dancers to be commended. Would recommend. Reservation required.

A throughly good night. It exceeded my expectations. The entertainment was excellent the food was good transport worked perfectly. To me the highlight was the host Danny who shared his knowledge of the history of the Cook Islands in an interesting and humorous way. I learnt more from him about the fascinating history of this magical island than I did on a 4 hour tour we took the previous day. Thanks to all at Highland Paradise for a great night.

Would definitely recommend it if you want an authentic informative evening. They talk about the importance of their land as well as historical aspects. They pick you up from your accommodation and as a solo traveller this was most appreciated. The entertainment was absolutely superb and well worth it. There was plenty to eat especially as someone who eats plant based foods. It's an evening you won't want to miss!!!!

Great night with great cultural ceremony, dance, music and drums~ Host Danny was funny~ Made my friend's brithday a unique one😄~~ There were a couple of traditional dishes, although the meat was a little dry, but the ika mata and banana taro pudding was very nice~

A must see experience. We did the night tour and it was great! A bunch of passionated people proudly showing their culture and history. Food was nice, be aware that you will be loaded with carbs and protein will be served by them to ration it.

Black Rock is a unique and historically significant beach located on the northwest side of the island near the airport. It's a popular spot for sunbathing, snorkeling, and enjoying the aqua-playground in the lagoon area. The large basalt rock on the shoreline holds cultural importance to Cook Islanders and offers opportunities for climbing, snorkeling, and taking scenic photos. Visitors can also watch airplanes approaching the nearby airport from this picturesque location.
Picturesque beach to the north of black rock great for swimming and snorkelling. Better at high tide but still ok at low tide. A variety of food vans present and an undercover eating area makes it great for lunch, dinner or a snack. Nice place to watch the sunset too.

This place is open for everyone. It has a good view of the west side of Rarotonga and is a popular place for sunset. You can also swim or snorkel in this area. There is a parking space on the main road and you need to go down the rocks to go near it. Not possible for those with wheelchair or has problems climbing up or going down a rocky area.

Tamarind House Restaurant & Ukulele Bar is a popular dining spot in Rarotonga, offering a unique experience with its Polynesian and seafood menu. The restaurant provides an ultimate dining experience and is known for its romantic ambiance, making it perfect for special occasions. Additionally, the establishment offers outdoor seating, adding to the charm of the dining experience.
We celebrated my mum’s 60th birthday on 30/07/25 with a private booking for 50 people at Ukulele Bar. The service and hospitality we received were absolutely amazing. The food was outstanding, and we received so much positive feedback from our family — everyone loved it. The team made sure we were all looked after, regularly checking in to ensure everything was perfect and that we had what we needed. I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Tamarin staff for making such a special evening for my mum and our family truly wonderful. It was a perfect night, and we’re so grateful. Highly recommended!

Beautiful place on the beach with stunning sunsets, and a wide inviting lawn for children to run around on. The service was great and we really enjoyed our two dinners there. Unfortunately the food is a bit inconsistent - I loved my good old fish n chips, but didn’t really like the seared tuna which was just too cold in the centre - raw is good but fridge-cold is not. Cocktails were great, desserts so-so. Very good live music.

Only a short walk from my hotel and came recommended by a taxi driver it did not disappoint. As you can see from the photo the view is perfection, the food is on point - fresh and delicious. Priced well. A highlight for me was having a dinner quest who joined me and enjoyed part of my dinner with excellent manners. The only downside is the Maître D did not know his name.

Had the most wonderful experience at Tamarind House Restaurant. Last night on the island and our mael was most memorable. We chose a table outside and witnessed a magical sunset. Our waiter was an absolute gem, saw to our every need and more. Brought us cushions for our seat and a cute little light for our table as it got darker.

Great location, food and service. Beautiful decor and layout of the main restaurant area. Food was the best we’ve had on the island. The lamb and beef was cooked to perfection (as per our request). Food price is on the upper end, but you’re paying for quality, premium service and an outstanding view. Have recommended this to the rest of our traveling group and would recommend it to all those who visit Rarotonga. We will return!

We had the most beautiful tastiest lunch outside with the view to match. We had the grilled fish, we could easily have had that again the next day! Stunning. Cocktails are yum & strong. Service was great and the staff were so lovely. A delicious place to chill by the ocean and enjoy stunning food. We cant wait to come back.

Came for an early dinner and drinks with a group of 8 (around 430pm) sat outside on the deck next to the bar. No reservation made though noted when we were leaving outdoor area was packed. Ordered pizzas and island fries. Pizzas ok, standout was the cheeseburger pizza. Sashimi pizza was different. Island chips incredibly dry. Drinks reasonably priced. Fella behind the bar not overly friendly/engaging. Super chilled laid back casual place otherwise. Managed to spot some whales swimming by too! Plenty of parking.

Excellent food, awesome customer service & great atmosphere. We tried a few dishes & they were all great. Didnt have to wait long for our meals. The Ika Mata was soo good we ordered this 3 times. The Tuna Poke bowl - tick, Thai Chicken Pizza - tick, & Mongolian sizzling plate - tick. Also had the Fish Tacos which was good also. Would definitely come back here again if we return to Rarotonga.

A great market but make sure you check out the entertainment on offer. We were about to leave when the kids who will be competing in Hawaii stepped on stage. What a brilliant show!!!

We stopped by here on a Tuesday when the market isn't on, but there were a few shops open still. There is a playground here for the kids, food stalls and gift and clothing shops. We bought t shirts at Ollies surf shop. Looks great on a Saturday but even if you can't make it for market day its worth a visit.

Definitely worth a visit and go along to the Waffle Shack for a good coffee and excellent iced coffee! Great vibe and atmosphere. Lots to look at. BEWARE prices of veges and fruit - they were way overpriced. We paid way too much for our fruit and veges. Much cheaper at supermarkets. Cabbage was $10 lettuce $8 paw paw $12 (bigger) all way cheaper elsewhere. I know they may be home grown by locals selling directly. But I reckon they are just as good elsewhere. And then we found a paw paw tree at our accommodation! Yummy ☺️

Open only on Saturdays 8AM to 1PM. It is a bustling place with all kind of vendors. They also have a large stage where they show traditional island dances and sing songs. Food stalls, local crafts, pearls, clothes, plants seashells and the list goes on. A few souvenirs stalls as well. Mostly tourists but locals as well. An easy stroll through the market can take about 2 hours.

Highly recommend going here, what a great place to spend a couple of hours, its alot bigger than you think, we totally got lost. Its held every Saturday, plenty of fabulous stalls to explore, also great food stalls to grab something yummy to eat, plenty of things on offer, was even a dance show going on which really drew a crowd. Don't miss out on this on visiting here

This is a fabulous market with so many wonderful items and it is huge! The people are so kind and pleasant to deal with. Many vendors take credit cards. ATM's are also available, though there will be a line for that on Saturday when the market is the latest. The highlight of our visit was that my wife and I both found handmade ukuleles.

We ordered steak sandwiches & waited an hour for our food only to see that the server must’ve misheard us as we received steak and eggs - by that point we were hungry and over it. Food was average, cost definitely wasn’t worth the wait.

Nice little food stop near the waterfront not far from the airport. We took the clockwise bus around the island and stopped at the final bus stop. Ate lunch before heading back to our resort. The Lucky Rooster was busy, but we were able to get a seat. Our server took our order and promptly brought us our drinks. We were able to watch the kitchen staff as they were busy and they were hustling to get orders out. The other thing I noticed was the cook staff seemed to enjoy their work, smiling and having good conversation with their coworkers. Our food came out fairly quickly even though they were busy. We split the two orders between us and there was plenty of food. We were full when we left. They serve breakfast all day which was what we ate.

The Edgewater Resort and Spa is a casual beachfront retreat with various dining options, including a bar. The resort features an outdoor pool, tennis court, and beachfront rooms with stunning views. Guests can enjoy the Kikau Hut restaurant nearby, which offers an extensive gluten-free menu. The resort's clean and tidy environment provides a pleasant stay, while the on-site restaurant by the pool allows for convenient dining. Additionally, guests can partake in daily activities offered by the resort.
It may not be a 5-star resort, but it was absolutely perfect for us. We stayed in a 2-bedroom villa which was clean, comfortable, and had lovely fresh linen. Housekeeping came daily with fresh towels, which was a nice touch. Yes, there were a couple of cracked tiles here and there, but honestly that didn’t matter at all. The location was great — nice and close to everything. The café on-site was fantastic, and the continental breakfast offered plenty of options to start the day. We also loved the Spaghetti House, so much so that we went back twice — the food was delicious! There were daily activities for the kids, and we really appreciated the free access to snorkelling gear and beach towels. Overall, this was such a wonderful and relaxing break. Highly recommended if you’re after comfort, convenience, and a laid-back atmosphere.

We spent just one night at the Edgewater as we transitioned to Aitutaki. We paid a little more for a poolside room with a view and were not disappointed! The rooms themselves were on the average side but did the trick. We loved the included breakfast of fruit and muffins. (There was also yogurt and cereal and the opportunity to order off a menu for an extra cost.) The location is excellent! We had a nice morning beach walk, then stayed for lunch. The Island fries, fish and chips, and vegan tacos were all fantastic and service was quick! We wish we would have stayed longer, as this resort has activities and events scheduled throughout the week (crab racing, ei making, etc.) that we would have loved. There is also a kids program, which looked awesome for families, and transport to an adults only resort for a change of pace.

My family of 5 recently stayed here. We had a 3 bed villa in the garden. Our room was clean, full of the daily things you need. Staff were so wonderful, we had breakfast inc, ate every day. 6 nights and didn’t get bored of the variety. The butter cake on day 4! Perfection. We are at the beach view restaurant for lunches and dinners, the kids eat free was a wonderful perk! Great meals and prices. Happy hour cocktails were delicious. Walking distance to what we thought the best snorkelling, sun set and a sneaky sunrise. We used the on-site spa for a daily special! Great prices and products. We can’t thank staff enough, after plane delays, airport lay overs, our room was ready, clean and tidy and our bags taken off our hands when we arrived.

Good for the price. Walls are paper thin so bring ear plugs. Most the staff are great, the bar staff look like they don't want to be there and couldn't go any slower. Parking needs to be better as at times there was none. Activities are great for the kids. Fish feeding was fun. Pool was great and the kids spent alot of time in it. Breakfast was great. All in all it was an enjoyable stay.

6 night stay at Edgewater Resort I really enjoyed Rarotonga as it was my first time there. However for the cost of the room my friend and I stayed in was well below our expectations. We booked a room that said we would have 2 double beds It had a single and queen bed. Also the shower was very small and very dated with mould. We stayed in the Nassau building top floor. But for 2 people we got one flannel, one hand towel and 2 towels. To be fair the cost per night I thought at least 2 ply toilet paper would be a go but nope 1ply it was. Cups were not clean and a couple of the side tables had marks from cups from previous holiday makers when we arrived. And the Ants were awful. No plugs by the beds. Needless to say I won't be back any time soon. Maybe time to upgrade these rooms especially for what you charge per night. Good point The ladies who did clean our room daily were absolutely awesome and gave us a huge hug when we left. They were the highlight other than the ocean and beach which I loved. I really hope the rooms get an upgrade soon!

Full body massage was so good we went back again 3 days later! The team were incredible and really know how to make you feel relaxed. Best massages on the West side of the island! Will be returning when we come back one day! At the Maia bar, Juan’s service was fantastic and looked after us very well.
