Flea & Street Markets
Punanga Nui Market is a lively open-air market located in Avarua, offering a vibrant mix of local handicrafts, tropical fruits, and delicious snacks. Visitors can explore stalls selling clothing, pearls, and locally made arts and crafts while indulging in homemade dishes like coconut treats and freshly caught fish. The market also features live folk music performances that add to the festive atmosphere.
A great market but make sure you check out the entertainment on offer. We were about to leave when the kids who will be competing in Hawaii stepped on stage. What a brilliant show!!!
Lin E — Google review
We stopped by here on a Tuesday when the market isn't on, but there were a few shops open still. There is a playground here for the kids, food stalls and gift and clothing shops. We bought t shirts at Ollies surf shop. Looks great on a Saturday but even if you can't make it for market day its worth a visit.
K H — Google review
Definitely worth a visit and go along to the Waffle Shack for a good coffee and excellent iced coffee! Great vibe and atmosphere. Lots to look at. BEWARE prices of veges and fruit - they were way overpriced. We paid way too much for our fruit and veges. Much cheaper at supermarkets. Cabbage was $10 lettuce $8 paw paw $12 (bigger) all way cheaper elsewhere. I know they may be home grown by locals selling directly. But I reckon they are just as good elsewhere. And then we found a paw paw tree at our accommodation! Yummy ☺️
Kim K — Google review
Open only on Saturdays 8AM to 1PM. It is a bustling place with all kind of vendors. They also have a large stage where they show traditional island dances and sing songs. Food stalls, local crafts, pearls, clothes, plants seashells and the list goes on. A few souvenirs stalls as well. Mostly tourists but locals as well. An easy stroll through the market can take about 2 hours.
Fulldistance G — Google review
Highly recommend going here, what a great place to spend a couple of hours, its alot bigger than you think, we totally got lost. Its held every Saturday, plenty of fabulous stalls to explore, also great food stalls to grab something yummy to eat, plenty of things on offer, was even a dance show going on which really drew a crowd. Don't miss out on this on visiting here
Lee W — Google review
This is a fabulous market with so many wonderful items and it is huge! The people are so kind and pleasant to deal with. Many vendors take credit cards. ATM's are also available, though there will be a line for that on Saturday when the market is the latest. The highlight of our visit was that my wife and I both found handmade ukuleles.
Michael G — Google review
Large markets with stalls that sold clothes, fruit/veges, food, tour operators eg turtle tours, jewellery, etc. Stage with music/dancers, plenty of space to sit and eat/drink. Clean bathrooms. Highly recommend!

History Museums
Nestled in the heart of Avarua, the Cook Islands National Museum is a delightful gem that invites visitors to explore the rich heritage and culture of this stunning archipelago. With an impressive collection of traditional outfits, weaponry, and intricate artwork, it offers a fascinating glimpse into pre-colonial Polynesian life. As you wander through its thoughtfully curated displays, you'll encounter beautifully carved artifacts and replicas of seafaring vaka that tell stories of the islands' maritime history.
Cool little museum with a good collection of artifacts from the Cook Islands and neighbouring countries. I learned about the history of the country and its people, and have more of an understanding of where they fit in the world. There is a little art gallery down the back too. The staff are lovely.

Interesting collection of artefacts and so some sense of the culture, although I would like more historical context and narrative. Seems a little random but still worthwhile and worth the $5 entry.
Ian M — Google review
Great little museum Lots of cultural artifacts. Tivaivai (traditional quilts) on display! Friendly staff and good info.
Marl Q — Google review
I tried a couple times to visit. Closed when I went on the weekend and then again on the public holiday. Was not disappointed when I finally entered. Lots of information so rich and interesting. Only sad part was I could not take photos and there was no opportunity to purchase prints/postcards to take with me of this experience. I'll be back again.

Rehab

Disco club
Bar
Rehab is a popular nightclub on Rarotonga, known for its lively atmosphere and great music. It's the perfect place to end a night out, especially if you join the Rehab Party Bus, which takes passengers on a fun-filled journey along the coastal road before arriving at the club. The nightclub offers expensive drinks but makes up for it with an unforgettable experience. With DJHab spinning tracks and friendly staff, it's a great spot to dance the night away.
If you are looking for a fun night out on the town mixing with locals and tourists, then this is a must. The Rehab Party Bus 🥳 picked us up from the resort and off we went. Music playing, bus was shaking, Kia Orana to everyone we saw, this was so much fun. We stopped at three bars (with the last being Rehab) and every place was hopping, music blasting and people having fun. If you visit Rarotonga, you must book this tour. Cost is $50/NZD per person (or approx. $30/USD).
Barry H — Google review
Awesome spot we did the rehab party bus so that does two other bars before get to rehab. Crazy good drink pours good orice
Karl L — Google review
Please Be AWARE! I was on the party bus paid for a drink using my debit card pay wave, the female bar tender took my card (I did not pay wave myself) gave me my drink & not my card! She started serving someone else & I asked where is my card? Dodgy as, she said sorry it fell down back! Thankfully I wasn't drunk & with it, if I wasn't would have lost my card! Just use cash only if having a big night 🌙

HIGHLY RECOMMEND - Raro Pub Crawl - Rehab Party Bus 🥳🎇🚌 put this on your to-do list if you are looking for a great night out! They take you for a long ride around the island of Rarotonga before hitting 3 bars where you can party and dance the night away. ☺️ When: Wed, Fri, Sat Cost: $50 ✅ Pickup/dropoff included. ✅ Great communication. ✅ Strictly 18+. ✅ Good vibes. ✅ Meet people and make friends. ✅ Friendly and approachable staff. ✅ Toilet stop along the way. ✅ Fun good times!

This was the third place we stopped at on the party bus while the boys and i were on my stag party. It was pumping but had mainly a younger demographic then my boys and I. From what I remember it was awesome I had a great time and only fell over the one time lol.
Te W — Google review
The Party Bus delivered! This Friday night phenomenon was the next best thing to partying on a Burning Man mutant vehicle, with a festive party vibe circling the island to pick up passengers (plus a toilet break),stops of approx half an hour at three lively bars before arriving at Rehab nightclub 11:30ish. We walked the easy 25 minutes back to our accom rather than wait til after 2AM, but the option to stay late and get the party bus home was an option for the young and energetic. A good option if you want a concentrated party night, and it was popular with groups of women and a few couples.

Nice place to have a cold drink at very cheap prices when it's hot at night. Great music, very friendly staff and good party spot! Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Rarotonga International Airport

International airport
Rarotonga International Airport may be small, but it embodies the vibrant character of the local community. Despite its size, it efficiently serves international and domestic flights from airlines like Air New Zealand, Hawaiian Airlines, JetStar, and Rarotongan Airways. The airport is conveniently located just a short walk from the aircraft. However, travelers should be mindful of restrictions on bringing fruits into Rarotonga.
Nice airport, clean toilets and seamless experience from check in to boarding. There is no security for domestic departures, just a gate that you pass to get onto the tarmac ;) International departures has a security check at entry, followed by immigration and there are a couple of duty free shops
Joshua S — Google review
Rarotonga International Airport serves as the main gateway to the stunning Cook Islands. Despite its small size, the airport efficiently handles both domestic and international flights, connecting travelers to destinations around the world. The airport's open-air design and tropical landscaping immediately immerse visitors in the laid-back island atmosphere. Facilities include duty-free shops, cafes, and car rental services, catering to the needs of passengers. The friendly staff exude warmth and hospitality, providing a welcoming introduction to the Cook Islands. While the airport may lack the amenities of larger international hubs, its charm and efficiency make it a pleasant and convenient starting point for exploring the paradise that is Rarotonga.

Chill little airport easy to get through, friendly vibes, perfect start to island life.
Nesh K — Google review
The lady at the baggage drop-off, named Moya Healy (981), was unhelpful and hostile. She wanted us to check in our hand luggage, in which we had quite a few electronic devices. She stated that our bag didn’t fit the requirements (we had flown into Rarotonga with the same bag). We checked the measurements on our tickets, and they were completely different from the ones presented by the lady. We even offered to place the bag in our leg room, but she was unwilling to help us. She went to check with her manager, and suddenly the weight of the bag was also a problem. When we said that we could move the extra 2kg into another bag and began repacking, she accused us of lying about the contents, claiming we had said the bag contained only electronics (which we never stated). She then labeled us as “uncooperative” and said that she would “assist us” by not allowing us to board the airplane. Her actions and accusations were completely unprofessional and unacceptable. The whole situation made our trip unpleasant. Fortunately, the staff on board were kind and the flight went smoothly. As a traveler to such a faraway country, I would expect better.
Jan G — Google review
A pretty small airport hence the off loading of passengers on the tarmac! I didn't really understand why NZ citizens and residents had to be in a different queue. The immigration queue in arrivals was SO slow moving and there is basically no air conditioning in the building. Duty free is quite little and there are two stores to choose from. Duty free prices were great though (cash and card accepted). The departure area is separate to the check-in area which I found confusing as there wasn't great signage or much direction from the airline staff as to where to go after checking in. There are about 5 small stores at the departure lounge that sells a small range of duty free. Food and drink wise, there is only a small café and I don't think they sold alcohol. There really needs to be more food options. I was looking for a beach towel and managed to find it in the surf store so was pleased about that. The entertainment was stellar.

We were so lucky to be helped by Isabelle during a very stressful situation. Due to a paperwork error on our end, we found ourselves in a bit of a tricky situation but Isabelle went absolutely above and beyond to support us. She was incredibly friendly, patient, and kind throughout the whole process. Her calm and reassuring manner made such a difference, and we felt she truly cared. Isabelle took the time to guide us through every step and made a difficult situation so much more manageable. We are so grateful for her professionalism and empathy. Darren and Caoimhe

Trader Jacks is a classic waterfront dining spot that has been serving patrons since 1986. Located at Avarua Harbour, it offers a simple yet delightful menu featuring fresh seafood and salads. The restaurant's prime location on the western side of Rarotonga makes it easily accessible from the airport and downtown Avarua. When visiting this tropical destination, it's essential to pack sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and swimwear to fully enjoy the romantic experience in Cook Islands.
We had the most beautiful tastiest lunch outside with the view to match. We had the grilled fish, we could easily have had that again the next day! Stunning. Cocktails are yum & strong. Service was great and the staff were so lovely. A delicious place to chill by the ocean and enjoy stunning food. We cant wait to come back.

Came for an early dinner and drinks with a group of 8 (around 430pm) sat outside on the deck next to the bar. No reservation made though noted when we were leaving outdoor area was packed. Ordered pizzas and island fries. Pizzas ok, standout was the cheeseburger pizza. Sashimi pizza was different. Island chips incredibly dry. Drinks reasonably priced. Fella behind the bar not overly friendly/engaging. Super chilled laid back casual place otherwise. Managed to spot some whales swimming by too! Plenty of parking.

What to eat??!! Everything looked so good! I got the small cheeseburger pizza, and it was delicious! Choice of seating, undercover or in the open.Butbyou may need to wait yo get a bit of shade, the weather was so nice, but shade was needed!. Service was good. Worth going, I doubt you would be disappointed.

Beautiful place with really nice food. We didn't reserve a table, however we where there just before the kitchen opened and they sat us straight away. Highly recommend the shrimp cocktail, burger, pizza, nasi goreng, and they had a spicy special available which my son loved. Staff are so lovely and friendly and we had great views aswell

Excellent food, awesome customer service & great atmosphere. We tried a few dishes & they were all great. Didnt have to wait long for our meals. The Ika Mata was soo good we ordered this 3 times. The Tuna Poke bowl - tick, Thai Chicken Pizza - tick, & Mongolian sizzling plate - tick. Also had the Fish Tacos which was good also. Would definitely come back here again if we return to Rarotonga.

Fantastic atmosphere, great views, attentive service and good food. Tried the smoked marlin mornay which had a nice flavour. Seafood chowder was good too. Staff were really efficient. There was live music on too which really added to ambience.

Palace Takeaways is a renowned spot known for its Palace burgers, which are available at discounted prices on Mondays and Wednesdays. The place has gained popularity among locals and tourists alike, with many recommending it as a must-visit in Rarotonga. Despite being busy, the food is highly praised for its quality and unique flavors. The service is considered good, and the atmosphere is described as warm and social, especially when overlooking Avatiu wharf.
Best burger joint in Rarotonga!! Went several times while I was on the island. Tried quite a few different burgers but my favourite was their “wet” bacon burger. Yes, “wet”. It is their secret menu item and makes the burger so much better. Love the fresh salad in the burgers as well. Wednesday is their happy hour where their burgers are super cheap. Also tried their deep fried mussels and they were on point as well. Also while you are there try a vaiora. The cook island produced soft drink.
B L — Google review
From counter lady was very grumpy, as we asked to repeat the ingredients of one burger. So we just order one. But i am a woman with nerve, and it was time to ask her what was in the seafood platter, i let you just image. Anyway the seafood place was not my thing, the burger is ok, nothing crazy, just big because a lots of salad.
S “ — Google review
This place is known for some of the best burgers on Rarotonga. Very tasty, generous portions but I have to say the Fish plate on order was the bomb. 2 lightly crispy battered Parrot fish..👌...light, fluffy, & very tasty similar to flounder. Had the Wetburger & also a Steak burger & both were good. They have some days were the burgers are only $3.50 each but you need to get in early because it gets hectic.
Mark T — Google review
I'll give it 5 stars because the quality, taste and price come together. As I am trying to be vegetarian, I ordered the veg burger worth 7NZD. However, it came with egg. I still ate it and it was yummy. The chips were fresh, hot and crispy. It cost only 6NZD. The good thing is that they are open on Sundays, when most shops are closed. Their location is just infront of the water so you get a good view while eating. They also accept both cards and cash. No surcharge even with a credit card.
Gleeko M — Google review
Tasty burger spot right on the water. Fast and affordable. Come for $3.50 burgers on Wednesdays.
Theo R — Google review
This is a local favourite, and that should tell you enough. $3.50 burgers on Wednesday from 8am-8pm was outrageous, although I’d gladly pay full price for most of the items on the menu. The wait was a little long but the food was well worth it. Definitely call up to order if you can.
Xavier K — Google review
Heard so many great things about this place and went to try the iconic wet cheeseburger. Upon arrival to order; we were greeted with some attitude by the order taker. She was not very friendly and seemed like she didn’t like her job very much. The wet cheeseburger was delicious but nothing special but still a must when in Raro.
Hope F — Google review
Went here multiple times during my trip to Raro. Wet cheese burger is a must! FYI: Messy to eat but all the flavours come together and is delicious. Try aim to go on happy hour! $3.50 a burger which is cheap as chips.

Was so fresh and amazing ! Recommend going ! It is $5 for a car or free if you walk and it’s not far ! Definitely worth it

I think this expedition or experience is under rated. This is because it's not developed properly. The road to waterfall are in pretty bad condition despite they are charging entry fee $2 for walker or biker and $5 for car or truck. Waterfall itself at amazing experience. Surrounded by amazing rain forest and there are couple of trails too if you want more fun. I will recommend this one but with caution

A nice spot for a freshwater swim. Wear insect repellant here as a few mosquitos around. Free to walk up but there is a small charge for vehicles
Jared R — Google review
There was a lady taking payments in a booth at the Main Road entrance. The gravel track to the Falls is in poor condition, with water filled potholes. We walked in and looked for butterflies. The falls are part of a water catchment plant, with tanks along the roadway and a pipe across the waterfalls.
Robin H — Google review
Follow the gravel road to the end.. and there in the middle of the bush is a stunning waterfall.. Well worth it
Toni W — Google review
The drive or walk to the waterfall is prettier than the waterfall itself. Do it because you can but not essential.

We rode e-bikes to the falls and it was well worth it. The falls are lovely and the swim was delightfully refreshing.

It cost $5 for a car, the road is pretty bad lots if potholes and dirt the whole way not too good if you have a van or a large car, best in a 4wd or scooter. You can swim at the waterfall but be prepared to climb down and up over slippery rocks. It's free for locals only tourist have to pay!.

Cultural center
Highland Paradise offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and explore the former mountaintop village of the Tinomana tribe. The site provides stunning views of the island's west coast and hosts authentic tours and captivating night shows. Visitors are treated to informative presentations on local culture and history, as well as traditional ceremonies that honor the land.
Asked our AirBnB host for something local and authentic and she recommended Highland Paradise....and she was spot on. We did the dinner tour, which begins with a presentation about local culture and history. Three people from the crowd are selected to participate in the next portion of the event, a ceremony outdoors where we ask the land to allow us to be there. After that, the guide takes you to an overlook where he explains Maori history of the three island tribes, how he is connected directly to one of the chiefs, how Polynesians from Cook Islands sent out explorers and eventually migrated to Aotearoa/New Zealand in 1350. After this portion, you move inside for food and traditional music. After you are done eating, the show begins with more history lessons and traditional music & dancing. All musicians and dancers are local students, which is a great link to their history and culture too! Parking was ample, the drive there is interesting, the views are beautiful, the history/culture are enlightening, the food excellent and overall a great time. Cannot recommend this enough! We even met the Minister of Justice and Education!

Being on the tour was amazing and we learned so much from our guide who shared Matauranga and history through stories and hands-on experiences. The evening show was full of Ritenga, performance and amazing local food, all prepared by people who are wonderfully strong in their indigenous identity. Thank you so much team for your manaaki, it was so wonderful being at your spot !

A throughly good night. It exceeded my expectations. The entertainment was excellent the food was good transport worked perfectly. To me the highlight was the host Danny who shared his knowledge of the history of the Cook Islands in an interesting and humorous way. I learnt more from him about the fascinating history of this magical island than I did on a 4 hour tour we took the previous day. Thanks to all at Highland Paradise for a great night.

Would definitely recommend it if you want an authentic informative evening. They talk about the importance of their land as well as historical aspects. They pick you up from your accommodation and as a solo traveller this was most appreciated. The entertainment was absolutely superb and well worth it. There was plenty to eat especially as someone who eats plant based foods. It's an evening you won't want to miss!!!!

We took our 1, 3 and 5 year old and it was a great activity for them. There were a lot of cool pieces to see. This kids loved looking at all of the shark teeth. The stone fish and coconut crab were highlights for me. Finishing of with an ice cream was also a treat. Great hospitality, keep up the good work!

It was cool to see a coconut crab and stone fish and learn a bit about the Cook Islands however the entry fee is high for what is there. Good rainy day activity.

The eco centre is an excellent place to learn about the natural and maritime history of the Cook Islands, with lots of interesting artefacts and stacks to learn about. We saw some white tern nestlings and a young wood pigeon being nursed back to health before re-release into the wild, and the coconut crab and stonefish are also fascinating. My kids (14 and 10) particularly enjoyed learning about shipping and ship wrecks including the RMS Maitai, which is visible from Avatiu Harbour. Great little centre that is clearly doing great work.

Fun and informative, it is small but we spent an hour here going back and forth seeing all the little things we would miss the first time around. Has a touch tank, and some tanks with a variety of fish. 'Dwayne' the stonefish being fed was a highlight.

Lovely place to stop on our scooter ride, if you are looking for a place with beautiful service, and yummy milkshakes and food, come and see Drena. Drena made the whole experience wonderful, I wish there were more people like her in this world.

This small aquarium/rescue centre for Rarotonga's birds and amphibians is such a worthy cause. We had a lovely time talking to Steph. She has so much knowledge of the local wildlife. Some interesting artifacts and history to learn about too and an ice cream sundae is always good to finish with.

Nestled in the heart of Rarotonga, the Rarotonga Golf Club offers a delightful escape for golf lovers seeking to enjoy their favorite sport surrounded by breathtaking tropical landscapes. This charming 9-hole course caters to players of all skill levels, providing both a relaxed atmosphere and an engaging challenge. As you navigate the fairways, you'll be treated to stunning views of majestic mountains and the sparkling ocean, making each swing feel like a mini-vacation.
Great 9 hole golf course for when your husband needs his golf fix. The views are amazing as you are next to a beach and right next to the airport with planes coming over the top as you tee off.
Amy A — Google review
Good little course with some tough obstacles around the fairways. Fairly well maintained course - well priced.
Brent T — Google review
If you’re a golfer with a handicap of 13 or lower, you’re probably better off heading across the road to Black Rock Beach — you’ll enjoy the sea life far more than the golf here. I played the course using just a 6-iron, 7-iron, two wedges, and a putter, and still managed to shoot a 76 — and I play off a 9 handicap. It’s a 9-hole course that you loop twice, and the layout doesn’t offer much challenge. For example, playing a 77-metre par 3 with a sand wedge and a single putt just isn’t very engaging. Unfortunately, the biggest challenge wasn’t the golf — it was avoiding being hit by balls from impatient local members. While waiting for the group ahead, we were repeatedly hit up on by a group of four members behind us, even while we were putting. One ball narrowly missed our heads. I’m sure this was an isolated incident, and most members likely have good etiquette — but it left a bad impression. Sadly, I won’t be returning for another round. Instead, I found donating to the local SPCA and walking the dogs to Wigmore’s Waterfall a far more enjoyable way to spend my time and money. This course may suit beginner golfers — but only if it were less congested. As it stands, the risk of being hit by a stray ball is just too high.

Great little course. Nice to be able to have a hit while on holiday. Course is quite tight, which for a hack like me can be a bit intimidating 🤣. Definitely worth checking out
Matt T — Google review
Showed up around 2pm and hoped to walk on but didn’t feel welcomed and the starter didn’t know which rental clubs were left handed clubs which is kinda wild if you work at a golf course. Didn’t feel like it was worth the rate of $150 for two players after she said they’re closing at 4 even tho hours say till 6pm.
Sierra D — Google review
Pros: One staff member made us feel so welcome on our first day. We bought a concession card for 8 rounds. Cons: Didn't tell us we weren't allowed to play on the weekend. Had a family emergency so had to leave Rarotonga suddenly. Wouldn't refund. Only able to play 2 rounds. Zero compassion or care.
Shannen M — Google review
$250 for four players with one set of clubs and one cart, a little bit steep in terms of course layout / quality. Good times though.
Richard C — Google review
Played golf today as a family and had a great day. Didn't finish as we ran out of time and dawdled a bit, just having fun. The lady that checked us in was wonderful and friendly. Can't rate the course as we are not exactly professionals, but we thought it was pretty good. Thanks for a great day.

Fishing charter
Game Fishing Rarotonga offers a variety of fishing options, including game fishing for marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and mahi mahi, as well as sport fishing for giant trevally. The company is known for its professional and respectful approach to whale watching tours. Customers have had memorable experiences with the crew being able to get close to whales without disturbing them. The boats are well-equipped to handle rough conditions and provide all necessary gear for a successful fishing trip.
We had an amazing time on the Temu with our skipper. So much experience and passion. We ended up catching this amazing Mahi Mahi. On the way we got up close with 2 whales. It was just the best experience in this beautiful Island Paradise! Thank you so much. We’ll definitely be back.

We went on a whale watching tour today. It was amazing! Game Fishing Rarotonga are so professional and very respectful of the whales, in fact, I think that’s why we had a whale swim under our boat! We watched at least two more boats, and no one seemed to be able to get as close to the whales, without disturbing them, as what we did. The afternoon was so memorable. 100% recommended!
Samantha O — Google review
These guys are the real deal. Hook up after hook up on our 1/2 day shared charter on the 40ft decked out Lady D. Top notch blokes, good vibes, good music. Will definitely be back next time!
Harry W — Google review
Great crew. Awesome boat. Very respectful of Whales. Saw heaps of action! Turned engines off way out and Whales came into play. Surreal experience being so close for over 45mins as they worked us out. Felt this was also pretty special for the crew too, smiles all round. Highly recommend, well worth it!
Ashton W — Google review
We just came back from their whale watching tour and it was fantastic. Skipper was great and determined to find us some whales. Took a little while but in the end we saw many whales for a long time and they came so close to the boat! Only 6 of us on board so felt very intimate. Skipper shared lots of his knowledge, overall 10/10. Thank you for making our trip so memorable.
Alex G — Google review
An average experience. It was ok that we had to change our booking due to weather, but we weren’t informed that we would be on a boat that wasn’t advertised, or be without a deckhand. We were under the impression that, because we booked a shared charter, we would be on the Lady D Kat, or at least on one of the boats advertised. Because we didn’t have a deckhand the skipper had to run around the boat to keep sorting the reels. The skipper we had also told us to steer the boat, while he went to the end of the boat to have a smoke multiple times, and the swells were likely 3-4 metres. We were uncomfortable with this and unimpressed by the set up of the charter from when we first turned up, right till when we returned, and don’t think it was worth $250 a head.
George T — Google review
We went out on Lady D last week for the half day charter out of Raratonga. Very rough conditions in strong winds and swell but the boat handled them very well. A great crew and easy to organise our trip. All the gear was provided. Some nice wahoo, yellowfin and mahi mahi were landed. The captain filleted what we needed to take home. Highly recommend this great operator.
Paul S — Google review
Unfortunately, our experience differed quite substantially from some of the other reviews posted here. Our party of three was booked in for a Thursday morning charter in July with Captain Kataou. We paid our funds ($750), and we're immediately told fishing catches would be shared with local restaurants. This was confusing because there was no mention of this anywhere online or disclosed earlier to the booking, or none that we saw – perhaps hidden in the fine print. They explained that whatever we caught, we would receive an individual portion but nothing for our families, while they keep the majority to give (sell) to local restaurants. This wasn't a factor for us because over the 5 hour expedition, we didn't have a single bite or catch. We knew this could be a reality, but due to climate factors and simply overfishing, our understanding was that fishing declined substantially in Rarotonga. Not advertised, but be advised there is a strong chance of catching nothing at all. Check with locals or watch the catches before deciding if your intention is to catch food. While we can't control the nibbles or how they decide to take their share of fish, I was extremely disappointed to have our captain within the first 20 minutes of launching pull out a pack of cigarettes and ask the group if it was okay if he smoked. On a small boat, there's nowhere to run, so I politely said I would not be game to breathe in second-hand smoke. He got the message, but 5 minutes later, out comes the smokes and a lighter and begins to fire one up. Why would you even ask permission if you were going to some anyway? Again, if advertised, our skipper/captain would be smoking a cigarette every 40 minutes a different charter would of been chosen. The cherry on top of this whole experience was watching the captain throw his used cigarette butts into the beautiful ocean. For tourists to do something like this is unacceptable, but to have locals use it as their dumpster for used cigarettes was shocking to me. Please be hyper-aware of these things before you decide to select a chartering company as it ruined what could of been a lovely time. EDIT: Thank you for your response, GFR, and awareness that this conduct does not reflect the organization at large. My group made a note too, that while not a tour experience – the lack of an introduction from the captain, minimal engagement, no fish finder on board the vessel, and no swap to bait fishing after lure trawling failed resulted in a $750 boat ride with a captain who appeared to be going through the motions. GFR, you can email Frank, our booking contact, to communicate further.

With a fleet of three boats, they cater to various fishing styles, including big game fishing, down fishing, and blue water spearfishing. Their experienced staff is dedicated to ensuring you have the best experience possible while using top-quality gear. Many guests rave about their thrilling encounters with impressive catches like yellowfin tuna and even blue marlin during their trips.
Great staff. Fun trip. Amazing fine day and calm water. We were very fortunate to catch a 96kg Blue Marlin on this epic trip. Also saw Mahi Mahi flying out of the water on a mission not to be eaten by a pursuing 2nd Marlin. Saw whales. Saw actual flying fish. The Giant Trevally at the wharf some how knew we had caught something. Seeing them fight for the marlins insides as they were tossed in the water was incredible. Highly recommend.

Thank you to the team, for the great time we all had. Good communication from the skipper at the start. Thumbs up to the crew when the reels started screaming with the hook ups. 3 Mahi Mahi caught with another hook up but unfortunately got off. We even seen Hump back Whales out at sea, then again as we come back into the harbor. All around fantastic day, the private charter was well worth every cent.

Had the most awesome time this morning out gamefishing with Akura. Toru was our captain for the day and worked hard to get us onto this fish. We hooked a yft early on and lost it after a short battle. Then not too long later we were onto a double hook up of chunky yellowfin. Lost one at the boat and got the second in. On the way back in we snagged a Blue marlin and got that into the boat too. Great day all round with an awesome captain. Thanks heaps team, we will be back!

Arrived at the Port for our 4.5hr trip full of excitement A man called George was prepping fish (one) already caught by previous trip asked if he was the captain got a Aggresive Reply .So our captain turned out to be Buff got a lecture on boat safety anyone who stood up or moved was told to sit down .Felt like we were naughty kids at school after the lecture we were told by Buff that he was in a bad mood and that would not change unless we caught a fish. He then left and climbed the ladder to pilot the ship .Never heard or seen him again for 4hrs . The seas were very rough with high waves, and frankly the charter should have been postponed; it was a very uncomfortable 4.5 hours! Food was boring cheap white sliced bread with soggy filling and bottled water rolling around the bottom of a old chilli bin with the stale melted water. Buff tried hard to find fish to catch and on we sailed thru the heavy seas in vain. Was never so glad to get off a boat and head home .just a horrible experience.Total cost of $500 dollars for two of us .Never again
Budge C — Google review
Spent 4 hours with very little interaction from the skipper and assistant. We were told not to touch any fishing equipment and given no advice about fishing the local area. We saw no fish and had no action for the entire 4 hours. They could have spent more time giving some commentary about local fish and sites but kept very quiet. Bottle water was supplied but just dumped in an old esky with sandwiches Not a very rewarding experience.

Although it was a rougher day then expected, great day out for 5 of us with capt Boof and Deckie Daniel. Both friendly and easy to chat to. Bagged a couple fish and got a good feed. Nice change towing lures for different species! Owner and other boats of the fleet all meet up after the chater to chat etc. Boat was tidy, lots of room, definitely would recommend

Antipodes Rarotonga is a beautiful destination located in the Cook Islands, offering stunning views of the ocean and a variety of dining experiences. The Falafel Shack is a popular food stand in Rarotonga, known for its vegan-friendly options and delicious food. Visitors can enjoy dishes like the Philistine feast for 2 and baklava cigars with mint ice cream while being accommodated by friendly staff.
Lovely dinner at Antipodes. Service was excellent although the concept of slow dining appeared to be enforced by simply not bringing food / dessert menus until a specific time during the seating. Food was delicious and generous, drinks were diverse and delicious. Spirited celebrations around us for anniversary and birthday. A special place to watch the sunset and enjoy a lovely meal.
Sonia T — Google review
What a beautiful experience the 3 of us had at Antipodes. We went for dinner on a Saturday night and we received a warm greeting from one of the staff members and we had a lovely chat with one of the owners. Antipodes is a different kind of experience in Rarotonga. If you are looking for a quick burger and to get in and out quickly this is not the place for you. If you want the best view on the Island, amazing food, service and to overall have a one of a kind experience, this is for you. We went in knowing this was fine dining and our expectations were exceeded. I saw some of the negative reviews and I really feel a lot of this comes from the financial aspect. Yes, this is higher priced than most (or all) of the other restaurants on this Island, but so worth it. Money is an exchange of energy and if you are looking for that top notch exchange, Antipodes hit the nail on the head. We had cocktails, mocktails, wonderful bread with amazing dipping sauce, 3 lovely entrees, 2 deserts and coffee to pair. We will be back for sure. Thank you Antipodes!!!

We had a beautiful romantic dinner here. From the amazing staff, to the stunning scenery and delicious food, it was a lovely experience. The portion sizes are huge and quality of ingredients is excellent so don’t let the prices put you off, you are certainly getting your moneys worth.

This restaurant just has to be #1 for Rarotonga in our opinion. From best service, most wonderful staff to the expansive and delightful menu there is something here for everyone. Cocktail menu has to be seen to be believed. Our food was delicious and 10/10 for presentation also. The view is to die for make sure you book for sunset. Kudos to the chefs/owners who have created something truly special. So good, we had to go twice during our weeks holiday.
Tina B — Google review
Breaks my heart to give this rating as I wanted to love Antipodes so much 💔 I watched countless tiktok videos saying nothing but good things. I went to with a group of 8 people and I ordered a seafood platter which cost $115 for 2 people. $20 cocktail. $16 garlic bread (from memory). The garlic bread was the best thing I had that night unfortunately. The seafood platter was not nice at all. Overcooked, chewy, and the rice was burnt on the bottom. The service was also not great considering the amount that you’re paying. The view that day was not at its best as it was raining - which is no fault to them. I would only recommend on a nice sunny day where the view might make it a bit more worth the experience and price. One positive thing was if you are celebrating an event or occasion, they do a really cute song for you. There were 3 celebration songs that night that were so cute!
Keana L — Google review
The large antipasto board was delicious and generous. The ribeye and gnocchi mains were excellent and the creamy smooth white chocolate zabaglione was the perfect finish. Amazing sunset views and the restaurant’s unique style made the experience even better.

We were a group of 8 enjoying a sunset dining experience complete with whales in the distance. Portions were generous and our server Nancy was a delight! The Waterline Restaurant and Outrigger Beach Bar is a popular dining spot in Rarotonga, offering a special atmosphere for celebrations. Located near beautiful beaches, it's an ideal place to enjoy happy hours and three-course dinner specials. With positive reviews from visitors, this restaurant is known for its amazing food and beachfront setting. Whether you're looking for a casual meal or a special occasion, The Waterline Restaurant and Outrigger Beach Bar offers a memorable dining experience in the Cook Islands.
Our Arrival Walked down the long drive way to the beach end here is waterline restaurant . As per other guest don't be fooled by the suburban look as there is a fantastic restaurant just around the corner . Service Greetings with a big smile and shown to our seats. Feeling very welcomed and relaxed. Food They have great variety of options on there menu with affordable prices. The restaurant has a rustic feel casual dinning and overall I would come back well done to Waterline and the team.

Came to Waterline twice during our stay. Don't be fooled by its appearance when you pull up to the restuarant, it looks a little dingy but it was one of our favourite places to dine on the island. No reservation needed, plenty of seating. Undercover seated area on the beach, otherwise open tables on the beach. Plenty of parking out front. Lunch needs to be ordered before 2pm. Small menu though enough variety. Casual dining, nothing fancy. Over both visits we had the fish and chips and beef burger (adventurous I know!). All cooked to perfection. Delicious flavourful. Fish juicy. Drinks cold. The best mango daiquiri! Waitress to be commended, there both days we visits. Excellent friendly service. Reasonably priced. Views to die for. Would recommend. Would go again.

Don’t be fooled by the front facade 🤣 when we first arrived it felt like it was somebody’s home. The restaurant and bar is rustic and very inviting. The whole restaurant has a really inviting atmosphere. The service was outstanding. The food was super good and probably some of the best meals we had in Rarotonga.

Lovely food, well presented with devine side salads and reasonably priced. The tempura fish & prawns + the Pineapple delight desert were my favourites. We did not book but arrived early and were accommodated and promptly served. We dined on a Friday night and did have to remind them we were there when it got busy later, island chill attitude rules here! We ate here again and everything was delicious

We ordered steak sandwiches & waited an hour for our food only to see that the server must’ve misheard us as we received steak and eggs - by that point we were hungry and over it. Food was average, cost definitely wasn’t worth the wait.

Nice little food stop near the waterfront not far from the airport. We took the clockwise bus around the island and stopped at the final bus stop. Ate lunch before heading back to our resort. The Lucky Rooster was busy, but we were able to get a seat. Our server took our order and promptly brought us our drinks. We were able to watch the kitchen staff as they were busy and they were hustling to get orders out. The other thing I noticed was the cook staff seemed to enjoy their work, smiling and having good conversation with their coworkers. Our food came out fairly quickly even though they were busy. We split the two orders between us and there was plenty of food. We were full when we left. They serve breakfast all day which was what we ate.

Shipwreck Hut Bar & Restaurant & Accommodation is a hidden gem that offers a relaxed and charming beachfront dining experience. The location has been redeveloped, featuring an extended bar area and a great pool. The staff are engaging and the food, while simple pub fare, is delicious - with standout dishes like beef nachos and chicken wrap with fries. Visitors can enjoy good drinks, great food, and a nice atmosphere while watching the sunset or listening to live music.
Happy hour from 3-5pm with $13 cocktails, nice tasting Pina Colada, chicken burger was okay too though chips and tomato sauce could be improved (more crunch to chips and more tomatoes to the sauce or do spicy coco cream instead). Good spot by the water to listen to the break and watch dogs entertain themselves. Tables are often all booked out for dinner so call ahead.

Fun place and great food. The music was 80's and upbeat. The food was really good. The fish and chips was crunchy. The seared tuna was flavorful and cooked to perfection. The sashimi was straight out of the sea fresh. Try this place ASAP then make plans to eat there again.

From the moment we walked in, this place felt like a warm welcome. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the relaxed beachside vibe set the perfect tone for our lunch. The view is simply stunning—right on the beach with the ocean just steps away, it’s hard to beat. We ordered the Ika Mata and the fish and chips—both were absolutely delicious. Fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. The Ika Mata in particular was a standout—light, citrusy, and refreshing. The decor adds to the charm—cool, creative, and totally in sync with the coastal atmosphere. Great music playing in the background made the whole experience even better. To top it all off, it was very reasonably priced—great quality without the hefty price tag. Highly recommend this spot. We’ll definitely be back!

It's a popular spot for sunbathing, snorkeling, and enjoying the aqua-playground in the lagoon area. The large basalt rock on the shoreline holds cultural importance to Cook Islanders and offers opportunities for climbing, snorkeling, and taking scenic photos. Visitors can also watch airplanes approaching the nearby airport from this picturesque location.
Picturesque beach to the north of black rock great for swimming and snorkelling. Better at high tide but still ok at low tide. A variety of food vans present and an undercover eating area makes it great for lunch, dinner or a snack. Nice place to watch the sunset too.

This place is open for everyone. It has a good view of the west side of Rarotonga and is a popular place for sunset. You can also swim or snorkel in this area. There is a parking space on the main road and you need to go down the rocks to go near it. Not possible for those with wheelchair or has problems climbing up or going down a rocky area.

Awsome place to look at the beautiful view and planes coming in. Even you can swim there. Rock was black here.

Embark on a unique water adventure with Raro Reef Sub, a semi-submersible vessel that takes you to the deep outer reef. During the 1 hour and 25 minutes tour, you'll have the chance to spot large pelagic fish, turtles, sharks, and even whales. The highlight includes cruising around the RMS Maitai shipwreck and accessing areas that are typically difficult to reach.
Great tour with the family. The water is so clear. We saw giant trevelley, a turtle and various fishes around the coral as well as the shipwreck in the harbour
Gemma S — Google review
Went on the Raro reef sub as a whānau and we all thoroughly enjoyed it! Owner is lovely and informative! We saw turtles, coral garden, the ship wreck and so many giant trevally and schools of fish. Also learnt about the ship wreck (Maitai) and some other history of Rarotonga. Highly recommend Raro Reef Sub!!

Inside knowledge into the history of the boat in the harbour. You can see the remains from town. Great and knowledgeable staff. Easy booking through Facebook, as we had a large group we got to have the boat to ourselves. The waters of Rarotonga are pristine and we were lucky enough to see a turtle. Whales weren’t out this day but the GTs came in force and we watched them eat. Amazing time had by all. Thank you Raro Reef Sub!
Cara W — Google review
Was told about the Raro reef sub tour by a fellow guest. Had a spare couple of hours so we called. Were lucky enough to get the last two seats on the 11am trip. The afternoon trips were cancelled due to higher winds. While not the best weather for a calm viewing... it had all that was promised. Entertaining and the the crew were great. Recommend it to anyone wanting to see what is offered.

Really enjoyed the Raro Reef Sub experience! Got to see giant trevally, turtles and a shipwreck, such a cool way to explore under the sea without getting wet. Definitely recommend it!

Great tour. Laid back guide and cool boat. Good views of coral, turtles, a shipwreck, and fish large and small. Not as good as a snorkel or dive, but great for the kids. Nice to see Avarua from the water.

Embark on an educational and immersive experience with Cook Islands Tours' Reefman-led tour, where guests can learn about the rich resources of the reef and how they are utilized by the locals for sustenance while promoting conservation efforts. The Progressive Dinner, a longstanding tradition in Rarotonga, offers a unique opportunity to dine at three local homes, each hosting a different course. This cultural experience allows visitors to connect with the community and savor homemade dishes while engaging in meaningful conversations with friendly hosts.
The coolest experience. Me and my family did the progressive dinner with Mike & the other guy ( forgot his name sorry ) but he also works in the parliament as a translator.. The hosts at the 3 locations were amazing and the food was lovely. I recommend to all

The progressive dinner tour with Mike and Tenoa was undoubtedly the best thing we have ever done. So glad we made the decision to join. These local story tellers take you into their homes like family and make you feel so accepted, loved and welcome, and we are no longer the same people anymore. We left enriched, educated, fascinated, blissful, grateful and sooooo well fed. Cake number 4 stuffed us over on table 4 though 🤣 cheeky little Bates was a funny bugger. Marks' main course and hospitality was so utterly enjoyable and entree with Aunty Nono, Noa and their family was superb along with the fabulous garden walk. 🌺 We left the tour bursting at the seams but also bursting with happiness and appreciation for the acceptance into the lives of these amazing locals. Do it, or you'll regret missing this chance. Thanks Mike! Great chatting with you as we drove around the island 🏝 ❤️ life changing experience 🙏 ~Margie and Ross

Sending a huge thank you to Shaina, Mike and the whole Cook Island Tours team for their kindness and hospitality. Their progressive dinner tour was booked out for two months in advance and for very good reason- it was exceptional! When we explained to them that my father and I had booked a last minute trip to the cook islands for my mothers 71st birthday and that it would most likely be our final trip ever as a family due to her deteriorating Alzheimer's, Shaina was able to accommodate us for the night of her birthday alongside the already booked guests. The food was so delicious, the 3 locals hosts we dined with made us feel like family, the whole tour sang mum happy birthday which she was delighted by, and we even got to dine with two Cook Island princesses. Mum might not have remembered the night the next morning but the photos will last an eternity and it was a moment my father and I will remember forever!

Do yourself a solid and book into the progressive food tour!! Having the chance to go to homes of residents on the Island and try home-cooked Rarotongan dishes was a wonderful experience. Everything was so yummy, and we were all very happily and full by the end of the tour. Meitaki to all the families who welcomed us into their homes.
Adubi — Google review
The Progressive Dinner (NZ$98/person) has been running in Rarotonga for more than fifteen years. Recently restarting after a two year pandemic hiatus, the local hosts are particularly keen to share their food and lives with guests. Lucky, as our bus contained twenty-five eager tourists, mostly Kiwis, but with two rogue Americans and two Aussies thrown in. The evening is split between three local homes each responsible for a course: entree, main and dessert. After a garden tour that had one Kiwi guest ask “don’t you have a hard rubbish collection” at the first home (tour veterans of fifteen years) we ate ika mata, where raw albacore was marinated in coconut cream for at least three hours with tomato and spring onion. An even better banana salad teamed the sweet local fruit with mayonnaise, curry powder, lime juice, apricot jam and a dusting of freshly grated coconut. They were accompanied by kinaki: maniota boiled like potatoes. Everything we ate—bar the albacore—was grown on the property. At the second home (a ten-year tour veteran) we were treated to a buffet of “the kind of food we eat with our family at dinner time” to the music of a string band. The highlights were an island curry that out-cooked the ones served by Rarotonga’s big name restaurants, and a pork stew with a top note of lemongrass that amped flavour by using pork roasted in an umu (underground) oven. Amidst a torrential downpour we helped ourselves to a dessert buffet at our final home. Soft meringue rolled around passionfruit cream, coconut buns, and platters of tropical fruit made up some of the offering from these tour newbies, who joined pre-pandemic but then had a long wait! Taken into their long decorated lounge room to wait out the rain, it felt very different to a restaurant experience: a chance to meet local people and see how people live in this island paradise.

The Cook Islands Library & Museum, located in Avarua, is a unique museum set on park grounds surrounded by some of the oldest buildings in the area. The museum showcases a fascinating collection of ceremonial artifacts, cooking utensils, shells, and weapons. Outside the museum, visitors can explore maritime displays featuring vaka and an anchor.
Beautiful to see some of the Cook Islands history, sad to see that this place of historical artifacts and its Library are sadly in neglect of much needed funding. Government puts so much emphasis on funding the new, even of foreign import.. what about our history? Our heritage?

Located in Avarua, Cooks Fudge Factory is a must-visit for food enthusiasts. The factory offers free tastings of their creamy creme brulee, Irish cream, Raro lamington, rocky road and other unique fudge flavors. While the snacks are not recommended due to high prices, the wide range of fudge flavors including chocolate, mint/chocolate swirl, passionfruit cheesecake and more make it worth a visit.
The fudge was absolutely out of this world, wish I had gotten more of each flavour, will definitely be back.

Gift shop / souvenirs / perfume / fudge / ice cream, a real mixed business right at the bus stop. Lovely friendly shop assistants. Didn’t try the fudge but did try the soft serve “gelato” dragonfruit flavour was nice, chocolate was ok. Servings ridiculously large, half the size would be heaps.

Loved the range of fudge available. It is also a shared space with a jewellery gift store. Quite handy for tourists like myself. Love the earrings I got here. Would come back again the next time I'm on the island.

The fudge was nice, possibly a bit sweet and too heavily flavoured. The staff were very helpful.
Peter K — Google review
Polite and welcoming staff. I don’t recommend buying their snacks aside from the fudge, as $4 for a chocolate bar is quite a sting However they have quite a range of fudge flavours to choose from. Chocolate, Mint/chocolate swirl, Passionfruit cheesecake, Russian, Apricot and mango, Crème brûlée, Salted caramel, Perkynana, and a few others were all on display.

Te Rua Manga

Mountain peak
Te Rua Manga, also known as The Needle, is a striking rock formation located in the lush rainforest. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the island and surrounding ocean. While the hike to this distinctive peak can be challenging, adventurers are rewarded with spectacular scenery at the top. The trail through the forest leads to a mountain peak topped with a huge rocky outcrop, providing an exhilarating experience for hikers.
Have done this hike twice, in 2018 with a guide and 2019 with local family. Equally as stunning each time. Track upgrades were in place in 2019. Its sparingly signposted but if its the first time I recommend jumping on a guided tour with Pas treks which was awesome! The needle summit views are the reward and there is a small watering hole for a quick dip at the end.
Toni F — Google review
Truly a one of a kind hike. The course offers access to the summit from both the North and South sides of the island. Be advised that this hike is for intermediate to expert hikers. The north side will be steeper, shorter, and easier. The south side is longer and also much more technical with multiple ropes that are almost required to climb both up and down a narrow route. If you want a quick expedition, go North side up and back. If you are going cross island it's typically recommended to go North to South. Once you get to the top there will be extra credit points if you climb the Neddle itself which is not for the faint of heart as a slip from the rope system could mean a fall from over 50 feet. Always keep one hand on the chain/rope as you climb and you'll be fine. Good luck and enjoy!
Theo R — Google review
Great walk, highly recommend.
Kara T — Google review
Nice hike. I would recommend to hike it with a tour guide If you are not a experience hiker. Got lost a couple of times on my way down. Don't hike if it was raining the day before it get quite slippery.but all in all worth to hike up.
Sabina K — Google review
Cool experience. Been on a lot of hikes and definitely found this one difficult as it's a steep hike and was slippery at times. Will pay to perhaps have a good stick with you as support as I found this handy. The ropes and chains towards the top might seem a bit daunting but is quite easy- just take your time. The reward is definitely once you reach the top and is spectacular 😍 The path to the track is a bit confusing. Once your parked up you want to take the road/path on the right. Follow path and keep going to the end then turn right and follow until you see a small make shift bridge leading into the forest.
LanaJD — Google review
We did the Rarotonga Cross Island Trek during our stay and definitely recommend it. Try to pick a day with some breeze. Start at the North (town) side, as there is a section going up hill which would be much more difficult to do in reverse. Take lots of water. At the end you can swim under the waterfall to cool off. It was easy to catch the bus back to town. Download the TransportMe app so you can track the bus.
Sam I — Google review
Most amazing experience. A rooster followed us all the way up. Went on a rainy day a few years ago and it was quite dangerous. But definitely worthit!!
Maisey C — Google review
Awesome walk, even for kids like 8 — 10 years old. Not sure if it is suitable for 5 years old. It has challenging bits. Don't walk it in your jendals as you'd be suffering from stuff falling into them. Close shoes are recommended. Can be easily done in shorten time, than the description suggests, but taking photos and enjoying the space takes time too. Also going down hill seemed even more challenging than going up hill. At least for people having issues with their knees. And it is really slippery (downhill) so don't underestimate the terrain.

Absolutely lovely. Ordered the HUGE fish curry; it was the best yellow curry I have had ever (NZ included). It’s spicy yet with the additional sides it enhanced the flavour to a slight sweet. Hubby, my mom and I enjoyed it throughly. Superb flavours! Kids had the pan fried fish with chips, good portions. The banana and chocolate bread butter pudding was YUMMMMYY, shared it with my daughter and she loved every bit. The servers were so fun, attentive and personable. They asked our names and was addressed by our names on every encounter. Thank you so much! We enjoyed our meal! (Family of 9) - Robyn, Chad, Zipporah, Azariah, Steve & Velena.

I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Tamarin staff for making such a special evening for my mum and our family truly wonderful. It was a perfect night, and we’re so grateful. Beautiful place on the beach with stunning sunsets, and a wide inviting lawn for children to run around on. The service was great and we really enjoyed our two dinners there. Unfortunately the food is a bit inconsistent - I loved my good old fish n chips, but didn’t really like the seared tuna which was just too cold in the centre - raw is good but fridge-cold is not. Cocktails were great, desserts so-so. Very good live music.

It offers a tropical island beachfront dining experience with outdoor seating that allows guests to enjoy stunning views while indulging in delicious food and drinks. Visitors have praised the exceptional food, friendly staff, and attentive service at this beachside establishment.
My wife's birthday celebration at On The Beach Restaurant was absolutely perfect, thanks to their incredible "Dinner Under The Stars" experience! From start to finish, it was truly a night to remember. We were enchanted by our fully decorated, private Kikau hut right on the beach. The setting was beyond beautiful, especially with the stunning sunset painting the sky as we dined. It was a magical backdrop for such a special occasion. The 3-course fine dining menu was exquisite, and having our own bespoke waiter made the service feel incredibly personal and attentive. Every member of staff we encountered was lovely, helpful, and went out of their way to ensure we had a fantastic evening. This wasn't just a dinner; it was an unforgettable experience that we will cherish. If you're looking for something truly special in Rarotonga, we cannot recommend "Dinner Under The Stars" at On The Beach Restaurant highly enough. Thank you for making my wife's birthday so spectacular!

A Little Slice of Paradise by the Sea From the moment we arrived at this beachfront gem, we knew we were in for something special. The view alone is worth five stars—waves gently crashing, the sun melting into the horizon, and a soft breeze that made everything feel magical. It wasn't just the setting that stole our hearts. The food was absolutely delicious—fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with love. Every bite felt like a celebration of the sea. We especially loved The Yellow Tuna Fish " Fish of the day" & the Island Trifle —both were perfection on a plate. The staff were warm, welcoming, and attentive without ever being intrusive. You can tell they truly care about the guests’ experience. Whether you're looking for a romantic dinner, a family meal, or just a quiet moment with a drink and the ocean, this place is pure magic. We’ll be dreaming about it until we come back. 🌅💛

This is literally right on the beach if you want outside dining or inside with clear blinds to outside. I wouldn't say the menu was extensive and there were a few things not available. What we did have was exceptional. Disappointing was our dessert selection ordered at the start of the night was not available. We were not advised until it was due to be served. Staff very attentive and engaging. Make sure you book. Most good places in Rarotonga are hard to get into April on.

The meal was good especially the 3 course deal for $69, agree the mains selection slightly limited, but what was there was very well done(yummy). However, the best part was the staff’s handling of the birthday dessert platter, which made this celebration of our daughter’s 30th birthday, into a delightful happy memory. Piped writing on a plate with candle and dessert artfully to one side was so suitable, & the best part the staff rousing the whole restaurant to sing ‘Happy Birthday’..so special with the wonderful singing voices of the staff. Thank you so much❤️🌴

Great little local wildlife museum The eco centre is a nice little local museum focusing on marine life in the Cook Islands. A good display of preserved marine items like turtle shells and shark jaws that you can get right up close to, along with a small aquarium with some local sea life, and the centre piece is definitely 'jaw dropping'! There is a small animal rescue shelter included where you can get up close to some coconut crabs, and a brief history of whaling and shipping in the Cook Islands. The attached Coconut Crab has pretty good coffee too. Entry price is reasonable and some of the money goes to support the rescue centre. Well worth a visit.

Nestled in the heart of Rarotonga, the Arorangi CICC Church is a captivating destination for those seeking an authentic cultural experience on Sunday mornings. Established in 1853 and constructed from coral, this church not only serves as a place of worship but also holds historical significance, with notable figures like the first Prime Minister of the Cook Islands resting in its cemetery.
I almost cried when they started singing. I had heard about it but wasn’t prepared for such an incredible experience. If you are in Raro on a Sunday this is a must! Be ready for a long worthwhile service.

We went for Sunday service and I was amazed at the heart the people put into their singing 🤩. The mamma's and pappa's were loud and proud. I felt very welcomed in their house of god.

I love going to church when in Rarotonga, nothing beats hearing their language and their singing. This is always a very humbling experience

(Translated by Google) If you don't have any plans on Sundays, you should attend a church service on Rarotonga. Starts here at 10:00 and is diametrically different from ours. Very colorful, everyone sings really well, a lovely experience. Mass was 3 1/2 hours long. But after 2 hours it was enough for us. Going early wasn't a problem. A review from Pylonier. (Translated by Google) We were able to attend the Mother's Day Mass. It was simply beautiful. There was a lot of singing, and the English translation was shown on screens. Afterwards, we were invited to the parish hall, where we were served food and drinks. The atmosphere was very warm and hospitable. This Mass visit left a lasting impression on us.

Mountain peak
Raemaru Mountain Trek, offered by Adventure Cook Islands, is a thrilling adventure for those craving an adrenaline rush and a chance to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Cook Islands. The trek takes about 2-3 hours round trip and involves navigating a slippery track with some rock climbing towards the end. Despite the challenging terrain, hikers are rewarded with stunning views at the top. Along the way, keep an eye out for passion fruit trees adding to the scenic experience.
Nice views as you move up the mountain. Definitely need shoes with decent grip, more so if it's been raining. The rope section at the end is also tough after rain. We did it with a 12 yo and 2 yo but 2yo needed a little help at times.
Jazz C — Google review
I gave it a 4 stars cuz the road is very slippery with mud, and there are hardly stuffs (tree branches etc) on the way to grab onto. I slipped several times ouch. It's a hike on hill with little bit of rock climbing. The view is nice. Better come here during a good day cuz the mud. It's very short around 3 hrs round trip. Check out my youtube channel under my name for travel videos during my 5 months covid lock down stay in Cook Islands!

A 2 hour round trip with a slippery track which gradually goes up the mountain. Rock climbing involved at the end to get up to the top view point. Look out for the passion fruit trees about half way up 😋
Dan E — Google review
Track is slippery after a bit of rain, and near the top the rock climbing will need some good footwear. QR codes at points of interest is a great way to show the history as a narrative and a video will show on your phone if you have data.

A wonderful way to spend a morning! The trek took me around an hour and 30 mins to complete, rock climbing at the top is scary but well worth it!

The Cook Islands Wildlife Centre is a must-visit for those interested in learning about the diverse wildlife, particularly whales, that inhabit the Cook Islands. Located on the Back Road of town, it offers an educational experience with informative displays on whale biology and conservation efforts. Visitors can also explore hands-on activities and interactive displays while enjoying a small but packed facility. Additionally, the centre's dedication to wildlife research and conservation makes it a wonderful place to visit for both adults and children alike.
Great place where kids are allowed to touch and explore. Small but packed with things to see and hands-on activities.

The café attendant was extremely rude and bossy. I placed 2 clean nappies I had accidentally ripped in her bin and she lost the plot, started yelling was very abrupt and bossy. If only she possessed simple manners and customer service skills. Everywhere else in Rarotonga was pleasant and polite. The building and car park were also very run down. A definite sour experience. If you want people to spend money at your establishment, learn to speak nicely to people.
Matthew G — Google review
Situated on the Back Road of town, it was worth going too. It was near lunchtime when we arrived, so we tried their toasted sandwiches and a nice cold drink before entering. We were pleasantly surprised with the amount on display. There were sections on Nan Hauser, who is a Whale Biologist and Principal Investigator of the Cook Islands Whale research project, Whale Conservation, Whale Hunting. I enjoyed reading about the pioneering work Jacques Cousteau undertook with his work in creating the SCUBA. There are also items that have been brought up for the various shipwrecks that have perished over time including the visible SS Maitai which sits on a sandbank in the lagoon opposite town. There are displays on the different species sharks, whales, of course, shellfish, and turtles. For those that are brave enough there is a tank to touch some of the local sea creatures. We spent ages in there and did not read everything. A must do !!!! I'll be back on next trip!

Closed. Apparently neither Google maps, nor TripAdvisor indicate yet that this place is closed. Even Google maps still lists what may have been the hours when it used to be open. Not fun to get there after a bus trip to Avarua and then walking with children in the pouring rain, past a couple of barking dogs that got too close for comfort, just to find out that it is closed. I checked again their Facebook page and only if you scroll down far enough you would see a posting about being closed.

Led by the experienced guide, Bruce, hikers will ascend steeply to Te Rua Manga, also called Needle Rock. Throughout the journey, Bruce shares insights about the diverse and uncommon flora and fauna found along the trail.
Outstanding hike. Spectacular views from the Needle and stunning island vegetation typical of tropical ecosystems. Start from the north end of the track. Requires moderate fitness levels. Be prepared for some scrambling up ropes and chains in a few spots.

Fishing charter
If you're seeking an unforgettable fishing adventure, look no further than Extreme Fishing Charters in the stunning Cook Islands. With options departing from both Rarotonga and Aitutaki, these charters cater to all skill levels, making it easy for anyone to join in on the excitement of deep-sea fishing. Imagine reeling in impressive catches like marlin, tuna, and mahi-mahi while surrounded by breathtaking ocean views.
Had an awesome day out with Troy and Brendan. They were both super friendly and knowledgeable. If they weren't talking to me they were to busy focusing on finding fish for me. I did a half day charter and they did everything they could to try get us fish. We got a double hook up on Mahi Mahi after about 2 hrs and later on a small Yellowfin tuna. The food they provide was delicious our day was as good as you will ever expect to get on a fishing charter. If I had of not caught fish it would not change my review.
Kayne W — Google review
Incredible evening! We were lucky with weather and fish on the bite but Troy sure knows his craft. Was awesome being able to see the flying fish and him cast to the GT just like fly fishing. 100% would go again!
Ellen A — Google review
Was happy to get out on the water on a beautiful day! Caught some wicked big mahi mahi Gavin was a superb captain and Troy was the best deckhand/fisherman I've ever come across helping me catch and land two big fish. Easily the best fishing charter I've been on and I'll be doing it again to tick off some more game fish off the bucket list.
Connor M — Google review
Not a great experience. Had no luck with catching any fish over the 4 hours, yes “that’s fishing” However we were disappointed more so that we were practically charged full price (close to $400) for the two of us. customer experience/service wasn’t there. Out of the two fishermen helping us, if one was driving, the other was standing on the roof so no one made any effort to explain to us the marine life etc etc. Go elsewhere.
Nic E — Google review
Went out on a night fish with Extreme Fishing Charters Rarotonga. Loved it so much I went again. If you want an epic experience go night fishing for GT’s with Troy and Gavin.

Went out last week and caught Wahoo and Mahi-mahi! Gav & Troy put us on the fish when it seemed no one else was catching that day! Highly recommend

Flying Turtle Cafe, located in Rarotonga, Cook Islands, is a vegan-friendly restaurant with extremely attentive service. The cafe offers dishes tailored to suit vegan and coeliac dietary requirements. It has a shipping container vibe and also operates as a tour operator. The cafe features undercover seating and sunny, welcoming staff. Customers can enjoy the Flying Turtle Turkish sammie from its short lunch menu.
First time visiting Flying Turtle Cafe. Was a public holiday in Rarotonga A steady stream of people. Service was great, friendly and always available. Food was good as well BbQ chicken focaccia, bread was light and fluffy. Green papaya salad was crispy and fresh with coriander and mint. Good dressing. Was not over chilled. Definitely recommend this place

We enjoyed our breakfast and lunch in this cafe! Smoothies are really very big and testy. In addition you can enjoy free WiFi here. Recommended 👍
Elena Z — Google review
Also rocking a shipping container vibe, Flying Turtle Cafe is a cafe-come-tour operator with undercover seating and sunny, welcoming staff. From a short lunch menu, the Flying Turtle Turkish sammie (NZ$18), jumps out. Here it’s a little less overwhelming in size, but with more delicate pan-fried parrot fish inside and no caddy of hot sauces, doesn’t quite live up to the heights of the one we shared at Charlie’s. Three fillets of the same fish is beautifully battered and piled onto a wooden board for their fish and chips (NZ$24.50). It’s accompanied by average chips and a very lightly dressed coleslaw that showed off the natural sweetness of the cabbage. The counter holds some good-looking baking from banana muffins (NZ$4/each) to cheese scones (NZ$5/each). A well-balanced and vegan-friendly tropical smoothie (NZ$13) uses coconut milk to good effect in a large glass jar. Well placed for lunch after a snorkel around Black Rock.

Loved coming here in the mornings. Close walking distance to the Edgewater hotel if you want a batista coffee. Awesome range of coffees and free wifi. Not many places have access to free wifi. Very relaxed atmosphere with chill music. Super friendly staff too.

Exceptional experience and food. From the second we walked in all staff were super friendly and accommodating. The chefs special sashimi was delectable and smoothie was very refreshing. Good portion sizes too. We will be back for more!!

Highly recommend, I discovered this the second to last day we were leaving managed to grab a decent coffee before they closed for the afternoon. Went back the following morning and we were not disappointed. Food was on delish. I got a bacon and egg sub. Alternative milk available, vegan options available which was so refreshing for someone dairy intolerant.

One of the best cafes we found on our travels in Rarotonga. As someone who is gluten and dairy free I found lots of options here including the club sandwhich. My friend said the coffee was some of the best she’s had!

The Spaghetti House is a highly recommended restaurant located conveniently near a resort in Rarotonga. It offers delicious pasta dishes that are expertly prepared. The menu includes options such as crab and prawn ravioli and chicken fettuccine, both of which are cooked to perfection with al dente pasta. Each dish comes with its own delectable sauce that is creamy and full of flavor.
We really enjoyed our meal at the Spaghetti House, the food was nicely presented, the tables spaced well - so you don't feel like you're having dinner with the table next door. We booked the evening before as they were full the first night we visited. Most places had a limited meal selection that appealed to our dietary requirements so we were pleased to find such a good selection here. I would definitely recommend this place, also the cocktails are amazing.

Nothing short of amazing. The steak was cooked to perfection. The carbonara was yum and so was the gnocchi. The thick crust pizza was one of the best we tasted on the island. The drinks were stunning with competitive pricing. Nights are busy so a booking is necessary.
Cara W — Google review
Definitely worth the visit! Amazing food, really good portion size. Helpful and friendly staff. If we had more time, I would be back to try other dishes.
Jodie D — Google review
Great meal. We had a early dinner at 5:30 and we were they only one there and was fast service. Get busy around 6:30. HUGE portions so had leftovers the next day. Make it fun when they give you crayons to draw on the table. Makes it fun and sociable.
Louise M — Google review
This place was booked everyday but I managed to get a table. Service is a bit slow but we are on island time.. so ok. That said staff is polite and nice. Restaurant atmosphere is ok. I had a sallad with beef and it was ok. The beef was a little chewy but still was acceptable. Ordered a pizza and it was made on prefabricated pizza dough. Not ok for a place like this that would like to call them self an Italian restaurant.
Mikael L — Google review
If there was an option for negative stars, this place would be my first nomination. Tried to book a table and was told they were fully booked. Walked in anyway and found the place almost empty—apparently, the tables were booked for ghosts. Ordered two pizzas and lasagnas (close to $100), and when I asked for a plastic fork and knife, they tried to charge me extra. Seriously? After spending that much, they couldn’t part with a $0.02 utensil. To top it off, I had to use my international card, which meant paying an extra percentage plus my bank’s commission—so that fork would’ve been the most expensive piece of plastic I ever owned. Asked for straws—none available. I guess that’s considered luxury dining here. And the food? Let’s just say I’ve never been to jail, but I’m confident the pizzas and lasagnas there are an upgrade. Would not recommend—unless you’re into empty restaurants, overpriced forks, and prison cuisine.
César C — Google review
So handy when staying at the Edgewater. Went.once for dine in and the food was delicious. We got takeaways the second time as the restaurant was full. Recommend reservations as its always busy.
Janey B — Google review
Absolute gem this place! Visited twice during our time on the island. The food is so good and you won’t regret it. Must pre book as always fully booked but often walk ins from 7:30pm might be ok!
