Castle
Historical landmark
Erbil Citadel, located in the heart of Erbil, Kurdistan, is a historic gem that seamlessly blends ancient history with modernity. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a glimpse into the city's rich heritage and serves as an ideal spot to witness breathtaking sunsets. The citadel features the Jalil Khayat mosque, adorned with intricate decorations and colorful Zakhrafa paintings.
I visited the citadel 3 years ago and really enjoyed the experience. Some parts make your step back in time a long time ago and you get a feel for what life might have been like there. A lot of artifacts to look at. I highly recommend for anyone to see it. I love history and if you do also you would want to see it. Just looking at the outside of the castle is worth it plus there are so many shops to buy souvenirs and places to eat around it you can exchange money there. The fountains at the bottom of the citadel are nice to just sit and people watch or just walk around.

Unfortunately it is closed. You can reach the view point between 10am to 6pm. Still give you a great view of the square.
Virginia L — Google review
Historical place in the middle of Erbil There's near parking so no worries about the car. The castle is high and for those who are disciplined, there's no way can go up. There's few small hotels around and so fancy..
Crazy L — Google review
The place is historical and ancient and the market is very beautiful and diverse and you can find many products. However, unfortunately, some sellers take advantage of tourists and visitors and sell at high prices.
Roro R — Google review
This is the first time in my life that I have seen a safe zone in the Middle East with different nationalities. I advise you to go and see for yourself. My regards to you, Kurdistan.

A Must-Visit in Erbil We couldn’t enter the citadel itself, but walking through the traditional and souvenir shops was a great experience. The area is rich in history, and the local vendors were incredibly welcoming. We ended up buying a lot of souvenirs for everyone back in Lebanon. A beautiful place to explore!
Dina A — Google review
- it's a beautiful and must visit place if you're in Erbil - when I was there the museum was under renovation so a bit disappointed as I would like to know the history of citadel - parking is spacious

Mosque
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
The Jalil Khayat Mosque, situated on the northeast outskirts of Erbil, is a stunning Sunni place of worship that resembles the iconic Blue Mosque in Istanbul. Completed in 2007, this mosque boasts an Ottoman-inspired interior adorned with colorful Zakhrafa and Quranic verses. Its fusion of architectural styles evokes the grandeur of both the Muhammad Ali Mosque in Cairo and the Blue Mosque. Despite being a newer construction, it stands as an imposing landmark visible from the citadel.
This mosque stands out for its elegant architecture, peaceful atmosphere, and meticulous design details. It offers a serene space for worship and reflection, attracting both locals and visitors. The interior is beautifully maintained, blending tradition with modern simplicity. Overall, it’s a spiritually uplifting and visually impressive place of worship.
Sara A — Google review
One of the most beautiful mosque in Erbil. It seems to be a blend of the Turkish and Persian styles. The daily Imam has a great voice and the interior is just as stunning as the outside. The only problem is that it closes 15 minutes after each prayer, even Magrib, so you can't stay there from Magrib to Isha
Adil W — Google review
I would love to elaborate on this mosque but it wasn't open at the time I got there (at about 8am). From the outside, the mosque is actually pretty nice and large. There are two locked gates that I would assume are the two entrances into the mosque. There is a huge parking lot for vehicles, but go slowly into it since there's no slope or ramp to "ease" into the lot. There was also a homeless guy sleeping right in front of the mosque on the street. I'll have to update this if I get the chance to visit again.

Jalil Khayat Mosque in Erbil A grand mosque built in the Ottoman style, Jalil Khayat Mosque’s construction began in 1997, funded by a wealthy cloth merchant, Haji Jalil, and was completed a decade later in 2007. The mosque is topped by 63 domes, most of them small. The largest dome, located in the main prayer hall, is 50 meters tall and 25 meters in diameter.

The museum's collection includes traditional Kurdish rugs, national dress, and various artifacts spread across two floors and multiple rooms. Visitors can explore diverse designs adorning the walls, representing different Kurdish tribes throughout history. Additionally, the museum features a recreated Kurdish home and a charming cafe for visitors to enjoy.

The Erbil Textile Museum, located inside the historic Erbil Citadel, is a fascinating place that beautifully preserves Kurdish and Iraqi cultural heritage. The museum showcases a wide collection of traditional handwoven carpets, rugs, and textiles from different regions of Kurdistan and Iraq. Each piece tells a story through its patterns, colors, and craftsmanship. The atmosphere inside the museum is peaceful and full of history, and the displays are well organized, helping visitors understand the cultural importance of weaving in this region. It’s also interesting to see the old weaving tools and how the artisans used natural dyes. Overall, the Erbil Textile Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in art, culture, and traditional craftsmanship.”
Rasha D — Google review
I really enjoyed visiting this museum. It didn't only show textiles but also had a lot of information to offer about the Kurdish culture and its recent and current struggles. It is also very informative about the textiles, explaining patterns and material used for the natural dyes. I would recommend this museum to anyone who is interested in learning about cultures and traditions.

This is an unique place which makes you ponder about art and its destiny with time, These colorful, elaborated kilims and rugs are the products of Kurdistan nomadic life style which will not survive in the 21st century.‬
Mustafa Z — Google review
It was beautiful, exciting and fascinating visit ever. There were a lot of old traditional Kurdish stuff too look at and discover. Some of them like man and women old kurdish customs, there were old rugs which were created by hand and there were sea rocks! They were really nice and colourful.

Shopping
Family Mall Erbil is a modern and expansive shopping and entertainment destination situated in the heart of Erbil, Iraq. It features an international bus terminal nearby, making it easily accessible for travelers. The mall offers a wide range of retail stores, dining options, and recreational facilities suitable for families. Additionally, visitors can enjoy an amusement park within the mall premises as well as a multiplex cinema hall for entertainment after shopping.
Seriously ?! It's even better than some of the best malls in San Jose. The place is impeccably clean, and the selection of clothing and footwear is amazing and unique. The food court is on another level – it feels like dining at gourmet restaurants. And the cafes? They transport you straight to Italy! I already scored some fantastic clothes and shoes, but I'll definitely be back for more. If you're in Erbil, don't miss this shopping experience!
Ashourina — Google review
Honestly, I personally have never seen a mall so huge with so many shops. It was extremely clean and organized. As with many places I believe things would be more expensive in the mall than on the street but if that's what you like then you'll have no problem there are many places to choose from as well as places to eat. I was very impressed even though I just walked around.
Joseph J — Google review
One of the most successful Malls in Erbil. It’s quite big and has so many stores and brands and they have a big parking space. You never have to worry about space. They also have VIP parking. Although the malls is old but it’s very clean. And the mall is always crowded and the cinema inside is great.
Dler M — Google review
It's very similar to a shopping mall in Türkiye. All kinds of brands are available there. The clothes are good.
Flower L — Google review
A decent sized Mall with plenty of shopping choices, lots of games, toys and entertainment for the children, hence the name so shops were less than other Malls but still worth a visit. Again, because of Ramadan so much was not open, but next time we will go a different time of year!!
Gary H — Google review
Very nice mall, one of the largest malls in Erbil and Iraq. There are too many brands of clothes and food. The calm and air conditioner are excellent, They are very clean and they clean it every minute. There is a cinema which is excellent, clean, quiet, large halls and professional staff with very reasonable prices. Also there are big games-city with too many games for children and adults and gardens. The mall contains a motel inside as a separated house which is large and suitable for families. A very recommended place to visit if you came to erbil especially if you came with your family.

The hotel is praised for its pristine environment, courteous staff, and outstanding facilities including a large outdoor pool and an indoor pool. Guests also appreciate the diverse and delicious breakfast offerings. Centrally located, this high-end hotel offers various dining options, including East Asian and Indian cuisine.
Cannot recommend this hotel enough! Heva, the receptionist checking me in and out, was extremely helpful throughout. She provided me with a great room on the seventh floor, stored my luggage for me and ensured I could stay in the hotel while waiting for my flight back home. She definitely enhanced this trip for me. Breakfast is extraordinary with a large variety of breads, spreads, fruits and other breakfast items. Staff at the spa and pool are attentive and made sure nothing was lacking. What a great way to end my holiday.

Everything was excellent from the moment we checked in till we left, all staff were hard working, willing to help and excellent. The service provided by all staff was a 10/10 service. The hotel was clean and well maintained.

I’m staying here through my company, which regularly books with this hotel. At 2 a.m., I was woken up by a call from reception because the restaurant couldn’t charge a 23,000 IQD bill to my room. No one mentioned at check-in that I’d need to provide a card for incidentals. Instead of resolving this internally or waiting until morning, they decided to disturb a guest in the middle of the night over a minor charge. The next morning, I asked to speak with the Front Office Manager to file a complaint, but was told he wasn’t available. The staff took my complaint and said, “It’s settled, don’t worry about it.” However, when I checked out two days later, I was asked to pay for the same bill they had already told me was resolved. I had also informed reception at check-in that I would be leaving half a day early. They told me it was fine and to call on the morning of checkout, which I did. They confirmed again that it was fine. Yet when I checked out, there was no record or note of any of this. For a hotel that regularly handles company bookings and business travelers, this level of disorganization and communication failure is unacceptable. A 2 a.m. wake-up over a 23,000 IQD restaurant bill is not “hospitality.” It’s unprofessional.

Hotel was great and even better thanks to Thamer who went above and beyond for us. We have recommended the hotel to all family and friends just because of Thamer and how accommodating he was. He is such a valuable asset to the hotel. We will definitely be back just because of Thamer who made our experience better than ever!

I was beyond pleased with my stay at this hotel. From the security for tourists, the presentation/taste/service of food, the hospitality and professionalism of staff...all exceeded my expectations. I plan to return to this facility and am grateful specifically to Ahmed Al-Yosef. This gentleman went above and beyond in service anytime I needed anything. Please see for yourself and experience a stress-free and pleasurable stay at the Erbil International Hotel.

The ground floor is relatively quiet compared to the upper floor. The coffee tastes very good, and the food is also nice. However, the prices are somewhat overpriced. The service is good, and the restrooms are clean. The main issue is the lack of parking space, except for a back garage that is usually crowded and overpriced compared to other places.

De Fermo Restaurant is conveniently located near hotels like Arjaan Rotana, making it easily accessible for visitors. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes, including Turkish and Iraqi cuisine. Guests appreciate the friendly and attentive staff who ensure a pleasant dining experience. The restaurant's modern design adds to its appeal, while the quick service is an added bonus. Although there was a minor billing issue reported, it was promptly resolved with a smile.
Very popular with foreigners and I can see why - good service, wide variety of food and generally a very comfortable environment. I especially appreciate the “no smoking” rule inside the restaurant. It’s not always the case here in Erbil. I had craving for chicken wings and gosh it surprised my expectations. Very very good. My husband got the dolmah, which he enjoyed as well. My only complaint is the bread - generous portions but they’re thin and crispy, a bit dry.

AMAZING food everything they serve is super delicious the prices are affordable and the plates are big and enough for 2 people to share and the appetizers are free and yummy !

The place is so crowded.. noise and no ventilation.. I do appreciate the authentic appetizers but the main course is oily or meat is not smelling nice .. I think the kebab meat particularly is grade 5 meat! Thanks for the experience but not worth it for the price!

At my first visit to the restaurant, I loved the place amd the variety of dishes served there. Although it was too crowdy and the place is not large enough, we didn't wait too long to have a seat. There are not a separate place for families and this is not cultural in middle east. At the end, I recommend it.
Mim S — Google review
When you want to sit down and haven't seen the menu yet, they bring you soup everywhere. They also bring you soup and put some things with the free salads. They charge 3,000 to 4,000 for a soup if you have 5 to 10 people! or a cold dolma that is everywhere like a salad but here charge each one 5,000 When you request an account, you will receive 2 to 3 times more than you expect. Never come back for this place and recommend
Rebeen T — Google review
The location is good but the restaurant is overcrowded and if you are lucky you can get a seat in 20 minutes. However the food is very good and tasty and the meat is high quality. The guy at the front door wears kurdish clothes and i find it very quite elegant. The staff were nice and respectful.

This is a local, famous restaurant with a big variety of food. I tried boiled chicken (organic) . They are serving a lot of sides as complimentary, by the way this is very common practice in this region. Food was really tasty. It's the most spacious restaurant in Erbil. You can get different kind of foods there. Even though I consider the prices high and the food was not delicious last time when I visited there. It has a big car parking area and spacious garden, you can sit inside or outside the buildings. There was no menu! It's not possible to listen to someone to tell you the types of food verbally.

It's a very good place to take out or to dine. If you want to try Iraqi food with good quality, come to this place. It combines the typical Kurdish restaurant with some structure, and elegance.
