Nantes

Nantes, a city on the Loire River in the Upper Brittany region of western France, has a long history as a port and industrial center. It's home to the restored, medieval Château des Ducs de Bretagne, where the Dukes of Brittany once lived. The castle is now a local history museum with multimedia exhibits, as well as a walkway atop its fortified ramparts.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
The Château des ducs de Bretagne, a grand castle located in the heart of Nantes, has a rich history dating back to 1207. It was once the seat of the province of Brittany and home to the Dukes of Brittany for over three centuries. Designated as a national historical monument, it now houses the Nantes History Museum, showcasing more than 850 artifacts that depict the region's diverse heritage.
A nice castle with an insightful museum (need to buy tickets), visiting the castle is free however. The walk around the castle wall is very enjoyable, also around the moat with the ducks swimming around. Many people having picnics around the castle as well. There are many shops and cafes / restaurants around the beautiful streets outside the castle. You can easily spend at least half a day in the vicinity.
Ken A — Google review
Very well worth going. The chateau is very pretty, courtyard is big and there is plenty of space for sitting down and relax. The museum itself is top notch designed and very easy to walk around with clear signs and displays are nicely categorized. Combining with different ways of presenting: videos, games, 3D virtual screens, cartoon story telling, many other ways of references. Great for kids to visit. One of the best museums to visit, I didn’t feel bored at all during the 2 hours. The content of the museum is very educational, you get a full picture of the history of Nantes. And it’s not afraid of showing the “ugly” part of the history about salve trading. Some rare findings about WWII as well.
Robbin S — Google review
If Nantes, the Chateau is a must, really good location. Fantastic that you can walk around the outside/ramparts for free. It is amazing and such a nice vibe when walking around here.
Thurso L — Google review
Had a very quick visit. You even can go through the gates for free and make some pictures. Part of the so called 'Green Line'. If you want more you can pay to go inside the castle itself
Roelof ( — Google review
A great visit. Walked the ramparts and the moat for free. Information boards throughout giving an insight into the history of each area. Amazing views of the city and surrounding areas. There's secure bike parking,a cafe and toilets. Well worth a visit.
Tim F — Google review
Very interesting museum about the history of Nantes and the area. Very modern and accessible with lifts to every exhibition room and even to the walls around! Highly recommended to visit it if you are in the area.

Really nice castle to look at and a very interesting walk around the museum. Nice gift shop.

Wonderful place almost in the center of Nantes. And what is good, that this château isn't far from the railway station. So, if you have a little bit time before your train, spend it here in château 😉

Passage Pommeraye, constructed in 1843, is a stunning shopping arcade that stands out for its Renaissance-inspired architecture and upscale boutiques. This historical masterpiece features an elaborate staircase, statues, and ornaments across three floors, creating a maze of gilded galleries. Visitors can explore fashion showrooms, cake shops, and jewelry or leather workshops within this enchanting setting.
Very high priced shops but really cool architecture with free admission.. and extremely easy to visit via st.nicolas bus stop. There is a Harry Potter merchandise shop, which was cool.

Stunning architecture in this passage way. Very ornate and I liked the old stairs. The shops are expensive.

Les Machines de l'Île is an imaginative and interactive park attraction in Nantes, inspired by the works of Jules Verne and Leonardo da Vinci. The park features a giant mechanical elephant that walks, trumpets, sprays water, and even spits fire. Visitors can also explore a laboratory of nature-inspired machines and enjoy a three-story carousel of marine machines.
A wonderful creative imaginative magical experience, for children and adults alike. Blending engineering & physics with creative design and wild imagination. This place is a must see! The Grand Elephant is also impressive, and squirts water everywhere. Don’t get wet! Must see, must try. Not expensive. Worthwhile for family and all ages!
F L — Google review
Love the experience. Amazing place. Most of presentations are in French. You can use app to read all info online. Would suggest more English tours through the week. One on Monday evening doesn’t suit all visitors on different days.
Maciej Z — Google review
Fantastic experience at Machine de l'île, Nantes. The ticketing system is complex but let's you pay for what you want to see - the three options are: The Elephant, The Gallery (with a range of mechanical animals to watch and some you can participate in) and the Carousel - each requires a separate booking and ticket, however the latter are both included in the Nantes pass whi h is good value for money. The Elephant was fun, though busy and you can get a better view from the ground of the elephant itself. The Gallery was excellent, again quite busy but you get to see demonstrations of 5 or 6 machines. The Carousel was better than I expected as each object has different functions that allow you to move them wh ih was fun. One word of warning, only download the tickets once as any subsequent downloads cancels the last ticket rather than duplicating it which meant I ended up in a mess with multiple tickets. You can also get tickets and opies of digital tickets from the ticket office. There's an outdoor cafe on site and a lovely Spanish restaurant adjacent.
Dominic B — Google review
This was on my "bucket list". It was amazing. Total of €30 to visit the Elephant, Carousel and Warehouse. You can see the Elephant walking around without paying if you don't want to pay to ride it. Worth knowing that parts of the carousel ride are wheelchair friendly too. It took us from 11am to 4pm ( with a break for lunchtime closure 12-2), to see everything.
Zena B — Google review
I found this a slightly bizarre experience, maybe best suited to children and anyone interested in beautiful carvings/mechanics.... but the mechanical animals were genuinely impressive and the people doing the tour were very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The highlight for me was the mechanical elephant, which you don't have to pay to watch.
Helen E — Google review
I liked the fact that this building had been renovated for such an interesting and, above all, interactive project. Fortunately, there was an English-speaking guide available. During the visit we were able to touch some of the machines ourselves and activate them, making the whole thing much more fun. It was also nice to be able to access the area where these machines are actually built, so that everyone can understand the hard engineering work that goes into them.
Flavio C — Google review
The gallery is extremely disappointing. You pay 12 euros to watch the staff having fun with the animatronics. You'll be at 10m of distance (if lucky) and with 100 people around. Maybe, maybe you're lucky enough to be selected to "pilot" some machine (actually is managed by the staff) The elephant ride is worth its price though
Inmaculada B — Google review
Staff spoke English so was able to buy ticket and find way around. Lots of machines to look at and shown working by staff. Spent a few hours here and enjoyed it but not a whole days event. Reasonably priced. Parked our vw camper in multistory over the road no problem.

Botanical garden
Nature & Parks
Nestled in the heart of Nantes, the Jardin des Plantes is a stunning botanical garden that offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Established in the 18th century, this lush oasis boasts an impressive collection of around 11,000 plant species, including vibrant camellias and majestic magnolias. Visitors can wander through its picturesque trails or relax amidst its tranquil environment, soaking up the beauty of nature.
Probably the best park I’ve been to. The fountains were so peaceful and made better with the amount of ducks (and even tortoise!). They had some cool guys around to spot with an amazing plant garden at the back. Had lots of fun activities for kids. Even had a cute chess place right in the middle of it - you have to bring your own pieces but the boards are there on the tables. The numerous public art about was fun to stumble upon. Such a lovely park
Oliver D — Google review
I love this park . It is Tranquil and beautiful . The park is one of the best I’ve been to . It has a magnificent Deer statue, lots of ducks , a lake with an interesting fountain and even a little area with some goats . It also has some very quirky big benches , which made me chuckle . It is only a stones throw from the main station as well , so is perfect to visit while waiting for a train.
Steve G — Google review
The scenery is beautiful and expansive, with interesting sights everywhere you look. It’s truly a must-visit. The variety of plant species is impressive — and discovering a special ‘Taiwan section’ was especially moving.
Po-Jen K — Google review
A truly beautiful and tranquil spot right in the heart of Nantes. The Botanical Garden is the perfect escape from the summer heat, with plenty of shaded areas under tall trees and lush greenery. Everything is very well looked after, clean and organized
Moaz A — Google review
This is a beautiful park, easily accessible from the center city, and nearby to many other attractions. Even in the middle of a busy weekday, the park was relatively quiet, and it was easy to find shaded areas to sit on a bench and enjoy the natural surroundings.

Beautiful garden near center of Nantes, excellent maintained and has a great range of different flowers and trees, as well as artistic objects. Many benches to sit and enjoy the scenery. Free entrance.

Really nice walk out to the location from the city centre. Well worth it, very peaceful park with a fair few different things to see.

Heritage museum
Museums
The Jules Verne Museum is a tribute to the renowned novelist, showcasing his personal belongings, manuscripts, and a reading room. Housed in a grand 19th-century mansion overlooking the Loire River, this museum offers an immersive experience for fans of Verne's wildly imaginative Voyages Extraordinaires books. Visitors can explore an eclectic collection of books, games, portraits, and documents belonging to the writer.
Somewhat uneven opening hours, so be sure to check the hours for the day before you go. Inexpensive entry fee with a substantial discount for those under 25 years of age. Tri-level townhouse retrofitted into a museum. Shows good information about Jules Verne and his creative work and travels. The visit takes about 1 hour. Highly recommended for a rainy afternoon. Do not miss the Jardin Extraordinaire right next to it.
Annette W — Google review
Interesting museum if enjoyed Jules Verne's book's. Spent a couple of hours exploring the museum, not a lot in English, but Google translator was a big help. It's free entry with the Nantes Pass. It is off a bus route and your legs get a bit of a stretch if walking from the bus station up the hill. It is also close to the planetarium (also only in French), so could do both in a day. Pre book for planetarium. The view over the estuary was stunning and gave some great photo ops. The displays and finding out more about the author of books I read in my teenage years I did find interesting, so for me I enjoyed the visit.
TravellingRhino — Google review
Much smaller than the one in Amiens, but still quite a lot of exhibits on his books. I liked that the location is well maintained. I visited the museum during the week, it was not very crowded and the entrance fee was 4€.
Sasha — Google review
This museum, in the footsteps of Jules Verne's life, has a magnificent structure and is very rich in memories, including personal ones, of Verne. I really appreciated the vastness of this museum and the uniqueness of the objects found there, some of which are even interactive. Last but not least, congratulations on the video game idea and the uniqueness of the bookshop, but above all for being the only ones to provide us with information in Italian. I love the idea that the information sheet can also be used as a poster, I only realized it once I got home🤪
Flavio C — Google review
A rather small museum, not his house. We saw some of his manuscripts, posters and drawings. Interesting to learn about his life and contribution to literature. Interesting his family and his life events presentation. Quite away from the city center, but with the nice view to Loire river.
Jurgita J — Google review
A small museum with replicas of the inventions of Jules Verne, display of his books, manuscripts, posters and games. You can learn a lot about his life and work. The museum itself is not very attractive, just with a few artefacts but for real fans of Jules Verne it's the unique place. A bit far away from the city center but with lovely views to Loire.

Great little myseum. But that hill to it not for the faint hearted Bought a 72hour Nante pass so entry was free. Plus Nantes has free weekend travel on public transport, which is great

Haute French restaurant
Located 25 minutes from the heart of Nantes, Le Manoir De La Régate is a renowned gastronomic restaurant set in a former riverside guinguette. The establishment has been led by the Perou family for over two decades and is currently helmed by Mathieu Perou, an impassioned chef dedicated to showcasing exceptional local and seasonal produce.
My wife took me there for my birthday and what a pleasant surprise. First of all meeting the Michelin starred chef who welcomed us in his kitchen was a very nice gesture. The ambience and decoration is very classy and the service is so organised and superbe. The food oh the food was amazing as we good the eight dishes menu and I have never been surprised as much as this time with every single dish how refined and full of flavour it was. Some dishes are to look at not to eat because they are like a piece of art. Thank you and it’s for sure recommended.

Outstanding dining experience from this young and passionate team! Everything was great from savory dishes to wine pairing . I’ll come back.
Stephane B — Google review
We enjoyed our meal here in late September. The plates showcased a variety of local ingredients, with unique presentation. The servers were very kind and did their best to speak English to us as our French is not strong, which was very appreciated. We noticed some minor issues with the service, which is unusual to experience in such an establishment. Once we were sat at our table, we waited an unusually long time for a server to greet us, provide menus, or offer a drink. Some courses arrived very quickly, while others had long gaps between or delays in having empty plates removed. One course arrived before cutlery was provided for it. Overall an enjoyable evening, but with several small issues which could be easily corrected to offer an improved experience.

We took the menu degustation back in October 2021 with a few wine pairings. We loved the whole experience, staff and the taste and presentation of the meal and atmosphere. Well worth every penny and we will be back to taste more! The owner was a great host as well. My dream dish remains the Cep shaped beauty.

I wanted to invite my dad to an amazing restaurant and chose this one. They more than deserve their michelin star. I’ve been to two stars where the food was not as good. The food was very original, modern but I particularly appreciated the chef showcasing his travels through his food. We also had a chance to visit the kitchen which was great! My dad was extremely happy, and told me it was the best meal he’s ever had. The service was good and efficient but not overwhelming which I appreciated. Everything was well explained to us in term of preparation and ingredients. My only wish is that they had a bit more variety when it comes to Champagnes. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Delicious and affordable for such quality: the 3 course meal cost 40€ for lunch (without drinks). The staff is as professional as you could expect for a stared restaurant. Will come back !
Wafflemanmatteo — Google review
A wonderful experience! From start to finish it felt more like an incredibly well choreographed artistic show than a dinner. We were surprised by each amuse bouche and each starter and each main and desert. A special mention for the sillure dish which really blew my mind. We left happy, full, and with a new appreciation for the magic that happens in the kitchen when the chef and all the kitchen work with their heart.

Such a great place to get a great time for dinner ! The restaurant is cosy with elegant wood table, soft light and a vegetal wall. About the food you can expect some great surprise ! Everything is well seasoned, the plates are beautiful and full of flavour. The sommelier and the waiters will help you to find a wine that match perfectly with your meal. I definitly recommend this place.

LuluRouget is a renowned restaurant located on the Ile de Nantes in the Zero Newton tower. The establishment, led by acclaimed chef Ludovic Pouzelgues, offers a unique 'Les yeux fermes' tasting menu with 3 to 7 courses for lunch or dinner. The industrial-chic setting features elements such as a ceiling inspired by Gustave Eiffel and artwork by local artist Jeronimo. Velvet seating and an impressive wine cellar add to the ambiance.
Always stay of with the negatives: - architecture is not our thing but hey not too negative... - 1 person had some bones in the fish fillet 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️ The rest was superb! Really almost deserves 2* - excellent service, lovely apéritifs - the amuse bouches were amazing - starters for each of mackerel for me and lobster for my better half - 2nd fish dish of sardines - the lieu jaune with such lovely pepper sauces and purée! - palette cleanser (herbal sorbet) - Raspberry/chocolate desserts 😋

An amazing experience. Every detail is taken care of, from explaining the collaboration on making the bread to the butter to every part of the dish. The explanation of the wine is interesting and told passionately. At this point I have not even talk about the food. The food is simply amazing, every single thing is perfect. An amazing experience that is definitely worth the money.

Great place for a traditional French dinner. It used to have a Michelin star. The server spoke English well and explained the concept of each of the chefs dishes. We sat in the back where you can see the food being prepared and I highly recommend that.
Patryk B — Google review
Aside from my two main challenges (trying every Michelin Star in Paris and every 3 stars in France) I also try all the stars a région or a city. I did Lille and Vendée. Now, I’ll do Nantes and around. So it’s the first one I try there. What’s interesting here? It’s in between bistronomic and bourgeois. The setting is more Bistronomic, but with decent space, confortable etc… so a bit more bourgeois. The cuisine is also very deeply rooted in the more bourgeois (with a spice of traditional) than bistronomic. So it’s a bit disturbing but none the less pleasing, especially on the salty where he’s more at ease. I did have a Terre/Mer dish by the way. Now, look at the prices, especially the lunch. You have a whole menu in a Michelin Star for less than a gas tank refill… So one should factor this in when judging this restaurant. And I know that you could compare it to the Michelin in Vendée, but it wouldn’t be fair because you would compare a restaurant in the countryside against one in a national city center. So it does deserve its star.
MichelinStarsChallenge R — Google review
One of my favourite lunch spot in Nantes. After a dozen experiences there I keep coming back as the food of always so tasty, seasoning is spot on and really well dressed. Roza never disappoints, from starter to deserts, team is super focused, even the bread is good. Which is often overlooked in French restaurants. Way to go!

This restaurant is in front of the 'histoire naturelle de Nantes'. The area is therefore very nice. In the evening, it is a pretty romantic place. Inside, the light are really well manage, you can see everything but with a charming shadow effect... We went there for our 23 anniversary wedding. We were both really enjoying our meals with very nice wine (we were allowed to get glasses of wine). The price is around 50€ each! Very nice place for a particular occasion...

Incredible food and service. The propositions were ambitious and always very well realised! We had a wonderful time as a family! A very warm thank you to the whole team.
Judz C — Google review
We took the menu with 4 dishes. Starting with the good points for the food, the merlin with mussels, yellow tomato and courgette worked very well (highlight of the menu). The sweetbreads were also excellent and the dessert were very good. Unfortunately, the apetizers didn't work. Taste and consistency was underwhelming. Boring start. The fishsoup tasted like it came from a can, and the lobster dish just didn't work at all. The gel had no taste and it covered a lobster-ginger salad, which was way overpowered with ginger. The cold dishes and soup were executed very poorly, whereas the fish, sweetbreads and dessert were excellent.
