Quinta da Regaleira is a fascinating early 20th-century palace and garden complex located in Portugal. Originally purchased by the eccentric millionaire Antonio Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, it was designed by Italian architect Luigi Manini, showcasing a blend of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline architectural styles. The estate is adorned with hidden symbols related to Templar Knights, Masonry, and the Rose-Cross.
Quite possibly my favourite place when visiting Lisbon/Sintra. Stunning spectacular castle with a mysterious gothical feel. Interior is lush and intricate attention to detail. Every angle of the palace brings a different aspect and feel. Statues leading up to the main entrance are ethereal. Grounds are vast and beautiful but can get a bit lost with some dead end trails. But all part of the exploratory feel with the well and underground tunnels making this so worth a visit. A must-do!

While it's not as large as some of the other palaces, the grounds are beautiful and full of things to explore such as caves, towers, waterfalls, viewpoints, and side trails. Also it's walking distance from historic center, which makes it a convenient visit. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and would highly recommend.
Alex K — Google review
Such and interesting and magical place. Feels like stepping into a mystical storybook. The estate is full of hidden pathways , lush gardens, grotto, towers, and also the famous initiation well. Exploring the grounds is an adventure itself. The grounds are large with lots of walking, stairs. And uneven paths - anyone with mobility issues should be mindful. Overall whole place is surreal with mix of nature, architecture, symbolism and history. Definitely a must visit if your in Sintra!

Definitely one of the places to see when visiting Sintra. You can easily spend 2-3 hours here exploring the sights. Make sure you do the walk down the well to the bottom and out the caves. Spectacular and exciting. The towers monuments and structures are almost fairytale in design and composition with the paths walkways and beautiful forest surroundings. Must see...

Awesome scenery! Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, is a magnificent 16th century Renaissance-style manor with amazing grounds and the initiation well there is an experience to walk through. I enjoyed being outdoors in nature, strolling through lush greenery, landscaped gardens, climbing the towers located on the grounds with views of the surrounding area and exploring the fascinating network of underground tunnels, caves and grottos there. Highly recommended if you enjoy gardens, caves and walking.

This was a highlight of Sintra for us. Just stunning! It wasn't high on my list before arriving but it definitely was worth going to. The only downfall was that we didn't get inside due to lack of accessibility. But the grounds were stunning, if you're on the fence about this one you should go!

I think everyone has already said enough about Quinta da Regaleira, the famous palace I visited on October 30th with the first entry slot at 10 AM. It’s simply majestic and truly a must-see. I’ll just leave a few photos here. Surely recommended!!
Kalyoner — Google review
Quinta da Regaleira was one of the most surprising places I visited in Sintra. The gardens feel mysterious and full of hidden corners, and walking down the Initiation Well was truly unforgettable. I loved exploring the tunnels and pathways — it felt like a mix of history, nature, and a little bit of magic. Definitely a place I would return to.

The National Palace of Sintra, dating back to the 11th century, showcases a remarkable collection of tiles and features intricate courtyards and rooms. Situated amidst lush greenery and hunting areas, this historic palace holds over 1000 years of Portuguese history and was favored by many monarchs due to its proximity to Lisbon. The Coat of Arms room is a must-see among the unique chambers within the palace.
This is a very nice and peaceful place. Not so popular and advertised like the other favorites in Sintra but definitely worth the time. I like it's simplicity, originality and modesty. The garden is outstanding from any angle. I definitely recommend this attraction!

Very interesting place! But in our case it was incredibly crowded... But its a cool place too visit! Lots of different types of architecture. It will take 1,5-2 hours normally, but if its very crowded then 2-3 hours. The walk is quite steep, take that into account, to have a decent endurance.
Karel L — Google review
We decided to walk to the palace to see it up close and enjoy the views. We went as far as we could without waiting in line to go inside. We felt the view and walk was worth the price of the ticket. €9 for seniors. While many people bought the double ticket we were ok doing the outside trip. The traffic the las several kM was crazy in mid Obtober. Near the entrance gate there is a shuttle bus for anyone who wants to avoid a steep walk.Bathrooms at gate and gift shop.

We were in Lisbon for 6 days before boarding our NCL cruise ship. One tour we took was to visit the national palace of Sinatra. Drive up was long but really nice views. The village is very pleasant and the palace is really interesting, especially on the inside. On the outside, the twin chimneys are very picturesque. Inside, there are many rooms to tour. The guides clearly explain each room. The pictures tell the story.
THE E — Google review
This palace is nice, many rooms and areas to visit and views form the balconies and gardens of the hills and another castles in Sintra. A lot of history to be told here and a nice walk through all the facilities. Nonetheless, I take out 1 star for the elevated price, in my opinion too much for what is has to offer. They take advantage of tourists and it is clearly overpriced. Another star out because several rooms had all the items (furniture, statues paintings) covered in plastic for restoration, but they did not mention this at the entrance and all the same charge full price in the ticket. Shame on them.
Trachemysta — Google review
A royal residence that feels both grand and lived-in. The National Palace of Sintra blends centuries of Portuguese history with Moorish, Gothic, and Manueline architecture, all crowned by its iconic twin chimneys. Inside, richly decorated halls, intricate tilework, and panoramic views reveal the taste and power of Portugal’s monarchs, while the kitchens and living quarters hint at daily life in another era. Compact enough to explore in 1–2 hours, yet full of fascinating details, it’s a perfect starting point before diving into Sintra’s other palaces and gardens.
Florin A — Google review
After visiting the PenaPalace we were not expecting much from this. But it was so interesting and gorgeous! It is totally worth a visit and is rather an unsung attraction that others should participate in.
Linda E — Google review
Avoid if You Can – Beautiful Place, Terrible Experience Yes, the location and palace are beautiful, but the overall experience was awful because of how badly it’s managed. The queues are long, you’re made to wait around for your time slot, and when you try to ask staff for help or information, they are extremely rude and dismissive. They literally walk away mid-conversation. There are some positives – it’s a pretty building and the surroundings are stunning – but the cons heavily outweigh them. There’s no parking, so you have to take the train or shuttle, then wait again just to enter. It’s overcrowded, chaotic, and honestly not enjoyable. We were still willing to deal with all of that just to experience the palace, but the staff’s attitude is what pushed me to write this review while standing in the queue. They have no basic manners and are completely unhelpful. We arrived 10 minutes before our time slot and were told to go to the back of a huge queue. When we politely asked why, a member of staff just pointed to the line and walked away without answering any of our questions. The cafeteria is no better – overcrowded and slow, so if you’re hungry, expect to wait a long time. Absolutely unacceptable behaviour from the staff. The place may be pretty, but the experience is not worth it.

The National Palace of Pena, located in Sintra, Portugal, is a 19th-century Romanticist palace situated on a high rock and former monastery site surrounded by parkland. The palace was commissioned by King Ferdinand II as a summer residence for the Portuguese royal family and was designed by Prussian architect Ludwig von Eschwege. It features a mix of architectural styles including Neo-Gothic, Neo-Manueline, Neo-Islamic, and Neo-Renaissance.
The Pena Palace is absolutely stunning! I chose to visit only the exterior since our guide mentioned that the interior is quite narrow — apparently, the corridors are about as tight as a bus aisle. It’s definitely a must-see when visiting Lisbon and Sintra. Tip: buy your ticket in advance — you get a small discount. If you’re planning to see the inside, be prepared for long queues. To get there, you can either hike up the mountain trail (around 40 minutes) or buy the hop-on-hop-off bus ticket (~€13.5) which is valid all day for Sintra’s attractions. There are also tuk-tuks, but I’ve heard there are lots of scams, so I’d personally avoid them. I took a Bolt/Uber instead — it cost me only about €6 to reach the top. From the palace entrance, there’s still a 15-minute uphill walk to the palace itself, but you can take their shuttle bus for €4.5 if you prefer. I walked up and enjoyed the beautiful scenery all the way. On the way down, I also chose to walk — the forest and park surrounding the palace are absolutely magical. When I return to Portugal, I’ll definitely spend 2–3 full days in Sintra just exploring all the castles hidden in the forest — they’re true hidden gems!

Loved the experience of visiting this place from Lisbon. Great architecture. Must visit when in Sintra. Views from the top are majestic, probably on a clear day, the sunset would be perfect. Recommend buying tickets in advance 3 days to get extra 15% off. Please plan your travel and accordingly book
Vinay G — Google review
I found the grounds and exterior more enchanting than the interior. But your tickets in advance and make sure you are there on time. Once you get to the palace it is still a 20 minute walk to the entrance and that is without stopping to look at anything in the gardens. The line is well run and manned. Do not get inline before the line for your ticket time because they will send you to the back of your line. The inside is beautiful, but I felt a bit rushed. I think I was inside for about 40 minutes. This rushed feeling is the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. I spent 1.5 hours on the exterior and that was without seeing the gardens. The views and style details are wonderful.
JENNIFER D — Google review
Beautiful palace with incredible views and vibrant colors. Be sure to go early and get your tickets in advance. It’s located up in the mountains, so expect a bit of a breeze — but the scenery is absolutely worth it.
Anand S — Google review
The National Palace of Pena was amazing, it truly feels like a fairytale come to life! Perched high above Sintra, its bright colors, whimsical towers, and Moorish details make it even more magical in person than in photos. Wandering the grounds, you’ll find vibrant walls, intricate tilework, and terraces with sweeping views that feel almost dreamlike, especially when the mist rolls in. Inside, the preserved royal rooms give you a charming glimpse into palace life without feeling overly formal. Whether you’re exploring the gardens or admiring the playful architecture, Pena has a way of pulling you into another world — the kind you remember long after your visit.
Dee G — Google review
Pena Palace is another gem to see while visiting Sintra, and like many places in the area it requires a fair amount of climbing since it sits on a high hill. It’s probably not as demanding as the walk up to the Moorish Castle, but you should still wear comfortable shoes. The best way to get there is simply to walk if you’re already at the Moorish Castle or Quinta da Regaleira. But if this is the only place you plan to visit, just order an Uber and avoid the street guys at all costs. Then enjoy this truly majestic masterpiece!
Kalyoner — Google review
Some people told me it's not that good, but I think it depends on the weather. It was a good day so I really enjoyed it. However there is no point using the shuttle bus if you are worrying about the "30 minutes walk". It didn't take us 30 minutes. I am collecting tile patterns in this trip and it full of beautiful tiles!

A nice monument, the visit of which means several lines of waiting and a considerable number of people. We bought tickets online for a specific time that was still available. You need to buy at least 1-2 days in advance if you want a specific time. We took a tuk-tuk to the palace and it was a nice ride with a short commentary on what we passed and a recommendation on which exit to take from the garden. We went back by HOP-ON HOP-OFF bus No. 434 for 13.5 EUR. We took advantage of the shuttle bus offer from the entrance gate of the complex to the castle. According to the time slot on the ticket, you join a queue and essentially complete the entire tour of the castle in this queue. As Central Europeans, I am used to a different form of commented tours of monuments, but I understand that this is not feasible with such a large number of people. I will not comment on the exterior or interior of the palace, because there are thousands of photos for that. However, the extensive park situated in the hills is beautiful. The network of paths and paths is breathtaking and there is always something to admire. We kept walking downhill to the exit by the pond with the Duck House along the path marked by the castle tower. There was a bus stop at the exit.

Nestled in the Sintra Nature Reserve, the Park and Palace of Monserrate is an extravagant 19th-century mansion adorned with Moorish, Gothic, and Indian architectural influences. The Neo-Gothic mansion is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens featuring a diverse collection of ferns and captivating follies. Visitors can explore the opulent interiors of the house before strolling through the lush gardens.
One of the most beautiful palaces and gardens I ever visited and I am a fan. The carving on the walls inside takes your breath away. The room with 12 muses busts is the most beautifully planned. I am in love with the garden layering and planning, you can see how much work went into making different areas and styles look so organic together. Great place for nature and art lovers. No times slots booking needed. Hop on and hop off buses run until 18:30, park clothes at 19:00. Make sure you can spend 2-3 hours here as the area is huge and the hill on the way back are steep. But it is so much worth your visit, I promise!!

One of the most impressive Botanic gardens I've ever visited. Very amazing rare trees, monkey puzzle tree for example and a redwood sequoia. And many others. Also huge ferns. And they have an amazing collection of cacti. I also recommend to use zoomguide to get to know the park better while you walk there. The castle in itself is tiny, but it's all worth it, it really made me think of the Alhambra

Beautiful place. If you want to have fun exploring a palace/house without the mass amounts of tourists like Pena Palace, this is your place. Beautiful gardens to hike through. Signs are lacking a little on the garden trail, we ended up a service road heading down to the next village. If you want to walk directly to the Palace, veer right once you walk through the entrance after a couple 100 feet.

This was definitely a highlight of our trip to Lisbon. It is an absolutely stunning building with a beautifully intricate decor, not particularly large but very grand all the same. The gardens were absolutely beautiful. Anyone who is keen gardener or just loves gardens then this is an absolute treat. There was no queue to get in and we were so glad to bypass the Pena Palace which had hoards of people queueing. I highly recommend a visit.

Not the most popular sight in Sintra but we enjoyed this the most. Perhaps because it was not as crowded as the more popular sights. we got to enjoy the gardens especially and the exterior of the house. Took the public bus 1253 from Quinta da Regaliera, less than 10 minutes away in a mini-bus that blasted away Mamma Mia and the whole bus singing to it. What a trip!Bought tickets onsite as we weren’t sure we would make it in time. Definitely worth a visit.

Beautiful palace, it is a nice construction, tgat has been nicely restored, but the interior is rather empty (they want to recover the items that once were inside but those were sold in auction years ago, thus it may be quite difficult). The surroundings of the palace are also beautiful for a walk. I went myself a with my mother 77 years old, and she had some struggles walking around the park. The path is steep at some points, with plenty of stairs. Walkable for a normal person, but difficult for those with reduced mobility. Some areas may also be slippery. She fell once, and luckily she didn’t hurt herself, but it is something that people should take into account. Definitely the park is not visitable with wheel chair, although the lower part of the palace could be accessed. Inside the park there is a tea shop to sit and relax. The park itself gathers plants from many different parts of the world, very beautiful to see. Also mindblowing how plants can grow when left in nature. Finally, I would say it is worth getting an uber from Sintra, as we did this on the way there, and it costed 8€. On the way back we took the bus that goes slower (also very full!) and we paid 5€ x person (this was after 16h, I heard that if you take it before during the day, the cost is 13,5€, but then you can hop on and hop off at the different stops. This was informed in our accommodation). I would recommend the visit.

🏛️🌿🇲🇽📸 Visiting the Monserrate was an unforgettable experience and easily my favorite historical site in all of Portugal. The self-guided tour was incredibly well organized, complete with an audio program and fascinating archival photos showing the original state of the mansion. The gardens are absolutely stunning, with plant species from all over the world. As a Mexican, I especially appreciated the beautifully curated Mexican garden — the size of the cacti and other plants was genuinely impressive. I highly recommend prioritizing this over other nearby attractions. There’s plenty of parking available, but do keep in mind that Sundays are free for Portuguese residents, so it might get busy. I visited on a rainy Saturday, waited a bit in the car for the weather to clear, and ended up having the entire mansion to myself. Did you find this review helpful? ❤️

While we got the tickets in advance online, I believe it would be easy to purchase them as you come in. The palace and the surrounding area with gardens, park, greenery and the ruins was beautiful. The palace itself was also gorgeous but a bit empty inside but understandably why as it’s less popular than the near by palaces. It was peaceful and quiet compared to other places. It is definitely worth visiting and is a hidden gem!

The Moorish Castle, constructed in the 10th century, sits atop a cliff in Sintra and offers breathtaking panoramic views. It played a significant role during the Reconquista and was built during the period of Muslim Iberia. The castle is part of the beautiful Sintra-Cascais Nature Park and is surrounded by other historic sites such as Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, and Convent of the Capuchos.
Excellent hike with excellent views. One of the oldest and rarest intact castle in Europe. There are multiple ways to the top. You can hike or you can take a car. Hike is faster and cheaper but make sure you bring your camera and a bottle of water.
Batalia122 — Google review
Be prepared for a hard climb. Don't trust taxi and tuk-tuk drivers. You'll still have to walk up; it's impossible to drive up. Visit only in good weather; rain will make it incredibly slippery, and clouds will prevent you from seeing the stunning views of Sintra and the surrounding area. Many other castles and palaces in the Sintra area are also visible from here. Stunning!😍 During the season, it's better to buy tickets in advance, but carefully calculate the time; the climb may take longer than you expect, and if you buy a timed ticket, you won't make it in time.
Anastasiia — Google review
Moorish castle has very impressive viewpoints of Sintra. Walking along the ancient stone walls feels like stepping straight into history- and views of the city/scenery are incredible. There is quite a bit of walking and the terrain includes lots of stairs, uneven pathways and cobblestones so definitely something to think about if you have mobility issues. That being said the experience is absolutely worth it especially if you enjoy history and panoramic views.
Katherine J — Google review
Be warned, you need a certain level of fitness since it’s a hike. Loads of stairs and walking. But reaching the top made it all worth while! The view was breathtaking and no words could better describe. Buy tickets at least 3 days in advance for a 15% discount

Amazing panoramic views of Sintra and Pena Palace ! But be prepared: it’s a lot of walking and stairs, with uneven paths and steep sections. If you love history and don’t mind a workout, you’ll enjoy it. Bring comfy shoes and some water!
Emily C — Google review
The view from the castle was very nice. Overall, it was a great experience. If you're not particularly athletic, you should definitely take the bus up to the castle, as the road is quite steep. Book your ticket in advance!

The Moorish Castle had been on my list for a while, but at first I hesitated because it sits high up on a very steep hill. However, seeing this masterpiece from afar while visiting Quinta da Regaleira completely changed my mind, so I decided to take the long walk up and it absolutely didn’t disappoint. Be prepared for some uphill walking and make sure to wear comfortable shoes. You can buy your ticket from the machine at the entrance gate and then enjoy the majestic views. Surely recommended!!
Kalyoner — Google review
We loved walking along the old walls. It’s not an easy walk, so make sure you wear your most comfortable shoes. But it’s absolutely worth it, the views from the higher points are spectacular. Definitely one of the best places to visit in Sintra. It’s also interesting because from the walls you can spot all the popular landmarks in Sintra: the Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, the old town, and more. You need a ticket to enter, but luckily it’s not timed, so you can buy it in advance without stressing about time slots. The crowd wasn’t too bad when we visited (a weekend in November).

Incomum is a sophisticated dining spot conveniently located near Sintra's main train station. Chef Luis Santos offers an exceptional culinary experience with a diverse menu featuring gourmet delights such as smoked duck carpaccio and tender stewed octopus. The restaurant provides a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for elevated family dining, with spacious seating arrangements and impeccable service.
A little on the expensive side for Portugal - perhaps not for a touristy area like Sintra, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. From my range of dining experiences , if they don’t have one already, I’d say it’s worth a Michelin guide recommendation . The food was unpretentious but original at the same time as authentic bringing some new flavours to classic dishes, With the freshness and heartiness that one expects from excellent Portuguese cooking. It was the first time I’ve ever had a Parmesan ice cream Have you sent them paired with beef carpaccio.

We came based on the great reviews, we didn’t have a reservation but were able to be sat on the patio; it was a fairly cold evening so it was just us out there. Our server Luana was amazing! She was very welcoming and flexible to try and accommodate us - even though it was already packed inside. She brought us blankets when she first came out to greet us at our table, and had great recommendations for dishes and wine. We had the beef carpaccio, oxtail risotto & octopus. All amazing, but the risotto might be one of the best dishes I’ve ever had. So so good. We took the tiramisu & mousse to go, also both delicious. They do their tiramisu a little different, with pear soaked in port rather than traditional coffee, and she made sure to explain that to us before we committed to ordering it. The prices were also very reasonable. We wished we had been able to come back again!

Happily, Incomium, meaning 'unusual' in English, is right across the street from our hotel and had a table open to reserve on a Sunday evening after we arrived in town. Make that reservation, as there were several people waiting when we arrived and we're them ushered to our seats in the window. The food was excellent and, well, unusual in some interesting ways like the passion fruit risotto that was the beef for her scallops and the vegetable soup I had made from whatever was available that day in the market. I didn't appreciate the €3 euro charge for filtered water, but at least it was good and sampling basic wines prior to committing was a plus as one was passed on because of this. Beatrice was our waitress and fantastic in every way. We would look forward to a return visit.

We had a very positive and special experience dining here. All the dishes truely exceeded all our expectations. The service was professional and all the food really interesting and good. The Carpaccio with Parmesan icecream is an amazing combo! Rissoto with passion fruit - genious. Lobster soup was excellent as well. Highly recommend!

Hands down, the best dinner of my Lisbon trip so far, even though this gem is in Sintra! Visited after a day at the Moorish Castle and booked instantly through the app. The waitress was incredibly kind and let us in early, which was such a nice touch. We ordered the strawberry and goat cheese salad, oxtail risotto, linguine al nero with shrimp, and three beers right after being seated—everything was super yummy! Every dish was bursting with flavor, and we were so tempted to try more of their signature dishes but were too full. For dessert, we got the floating island with vanilla cream, which was innovative and fun, tasting like a dreamy marshmallow. Next time, I’d love to try their sorbet or ice cream instead. Can’t recommend this place enough—amazing food and great service!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Loved it! We went to Incomum by Luís Santos as a family — my husband and I, plus our two kids — and we all absolutely loved it! My daughter had the penne, my son went for the steak, and my husband and I shared the pork ribs. There wasn’t a drop of food left on our table — we completely finished everything. We were hungry and the food was just so good! Great flavours, good value, friendly service, and a lovely atmosphere. We’d definitely go back next time we’re in Sintra.

Perfection! I find the menu a bit limited but nonetheless, perfect. ❤️ We ordered soup, fish and shrimp curry. We loved it. Service is excellent. The wait staff were all very attentive.
B O — Google review
A little disappointing given the prices and fame of the place. The crab soup and cooked cheese were delicious. The cod fish with potatoes and duck magret were a little disappointing. The fish was a little dry and tomatoes had no real taste to them. The duck was a bit gummy and the puree was too thin. The floating island dessert was innovative and pretty good. The staff is professional and nice. Overall it seems overpriced for this quality of food.

Tascantiga is a laid-back restaurant located in the historic center of Sintra, offering a modern twist on traditional Portuguese tapas. The chef, Vitor Paes, puts a creative spin on classic recipes, serving up dishes like confit pork cheeks with mushrooms, fried cuttlefish with aioli, and codfish cakes with olive puree and ham powder. The restaurant also offers outdoor terrace seating where visitors can enjoy their meal while taking in the picturesque surroundings.
Amazing food and atmosphere! If you’re in Sintra, it’s a must try. My personal favourite was the octopus blades which comes with grid shallots as garnish and it tasted amazing. My other fav was the pro cheeks and it was so tender and juicy! If what we had at dinner is any indication, I’m sure the rest of the menu is also amazing!

Efficient services. Lots of tapa to choose from. We enjoyed the food. The sausage is a bit too salty. The potatoes wedges are flavoured and are served with mayonnaise and ketchup. The mayonnaise is good. The seafood salad has shrimp, octopus and mussels. The octopus is well cooked and we love the texture. Good to recharge ourselves after visiting the Quinta da Regaleira.

Amazing tapas! One of the best highlights of my trip to Lisbon. Great flavours and variety. To expect a queue at peak hours but it’s worth the wait. The port tonic was delicious! Their octopus, calamari, wings were good. Pumpkin petit gateux dessert is a must with their cheese ice cream.

Despite being located in a prime tourist spot, Tascantiga served some impressive tapas. The wait can be long (up to an hour) during peak season, but we were lucky to wait only 10 minutes for a table. Their table turnaround time is quick because the food comes out pretty fast. This is a great place to get lunch during a day trip to Sintra and Pena Palace.

The café was meticulously restored using recycled and regional materials, preserving its authenticity. With vibrant decor reflecting Portuguese culture, it has been a beloved gathering spot for generations of Sintra residents since the early 20th century.
My husband and I stopped here for a quick breakfast on our day trip to Sintra as it's conveniently located close to the train station. We were seated at a back room as space was limited. My best memory however was the large portion sizes of the sandwiches 😀 which tasted great as well. The wait was a tad longer maybe because of the crowd that day but we enjoyed our experience anyway. We even overheard other people in the room express their happy shock when receiving their huge sandwiches as well and joined in for a laugh 😅

This is one of the best cafés in the heart of Sintra. They have great options, both food and drinks. I highly recommend the scones, teas, and milkshakes. The atmosphere is lovely, and the different rooms are beautiful, which is why it’s so popular with tourists. Parking can be tricky, but it’s definitely a must-visit spot for anyone coming to Sintra.

We only had time to grab a small pastry and an espresso but we’re impressed by taste and the quality of the food. We took ours to go but there is a large seating area and you can order more substantial meal.

Came here for brunch and was so glad to find that they offer gluten free bread! So I had the sardine sandwich which was so good! Big portion too! The sardines went so well w the goat’s cheese, pickled onion and veggies. My partner had the chicken empanada (so much filling in that tiny pastry!) and the Travesseiro de Sintra. He said the empanada was really good but would have been perfect if they had heated it up. I went back and ordered a chicken salad to go for dinner. It was also really good. Generous portion and flavours went well together. It can get crowded and for good reason!

We had breakfast at Café Saudade in Sintra as a family of four, and it was a great experience. There was no wait to get in, and the portions were huge — we even took some leftovers to go. The coffee was excellent, and the cozy atmosphere made it a perfect place to start the day. Conveniently located right next to the train station, it’s definitely a spot worth visiting.

Everything is incredibly delicious. The homemade orange pie is wonderful. The warm pressed tuna sandwich on crispy bread is very filling. The portions are huge :) The service is lovely.

Café Saudade was the first place we stopped for coffee when we arrived in Sintra. The staff were friendly, the space was warm and inviting, and everything we ordered hit the spot. We had the Trio Saudade, a Café Saudade, and an XL latte — all really good. The food came out fast, the portions were reasonable, and the coffee was smooth and strong. The pastries looked 🔥 If you’re just getting into Sintra, this is a great place to start your day and take a breather before exploring. Simple, friendly, and exactly what you want from a cozy café.

Very cozy place with perfect blend coffee (unfortunately they don't sell it). Food is tasty and hot pressed sandwiches are huge enough for two, not very hungry adult. Recommend it for nice start the day of exploring Sintra. Good luck 🙂

Casa Piriquita is a renowned local institution in Sintra, satisfying sweet cravings for over 160 years. Founded by Amaro dos Santos and his wife Constancia Gomes, the bakery initially gained fame for baking Queijada, a cupcake-like pastry enjoyed by King Carlos. Later, their niece Constancia Cunha introduced Travesseiro, a pastry filled with sweet eggs and almonds.
Our stop here was my highlight of Sinatra! The pastries were out of this world! Every. Single. One. You can’t go wrong ordering here. We walked in and had to grab a ticket from the old school red machine. It did take some time to get served but that was fine by us as it gave us time to decide what we wanted. Our order consisted of: 2 travesseiros (traditional, almond- what they are known for), two queijadas da sapa(I think is what they are called- they are the other traditional pastry!), almond cake, and one chocolate truffle. All of them were phenomenal. I really enjoyed the travesseiro. This is a must stop when in the city. The best of the best in my opinion.

Loved every single pastry that the salesman picked out for me after i asked for his recommended selection ! I highly recommend this authentic bakery !! everything they sell is absolutely worth trying. The pastries are fresh, full of flavor, and you can really taste the tradition in every bite. What really stood out was the guy working there , he was helping so many tourists all by himself, even making the coffee too !! Honestly, I don’t understand how a place that busy and successful doesn’t have at least one more staff member to help him out on the takeaway section . It would definitely make the waiting time shorter. Unless, of course, keeping the line long is part of their strategy 😉 and honestly, with pastries that good, it might just be working! 😄

This is a place you don’t wanna miss out on your visit to Sintra. Situated in the bylanes of the historic centre, this place is heaven on earth. Travesserio pastry, their signature filled with Almond cream was exceptional. Thats what they are known for, they have options of apple and Nutella too. Their quiejadas, basically a cheese and cinnamon, well known in Sintra was also quite good

Didn’t have any issue getting a table. Most people are quick with their pastries and coffee so they can start their day of exploring so if there is a wait, it’s not long. Tried all 5 of the pastries at the too of the menu (known for) and their pastel de nata. My favorite was the travesseiro (pillow). The coffee is really good here.

Casa Piriquita is an essential culinary experience in Sintra, highly recommended for anyone visiting the historical town. With a legacy dating back to 1862, the focus is squarely on their famed signature sweet, the Travesseiro. The experience starts with queue management; visitors must collect a token to be served, and a waiting time is expected, especially during peak hours. However, the service staff are exceptionally fast and efficient once your number is called, minimizing the overall delay. The highlight, the Travesseiro, was served warm, which significantly enhanced the flavor and texture. This elongated puff pastry is flaky and utterly delicious, living up to its legendary status. Crucially, the pricing is extremely fair: pastries and cakes are priced around €2.00, providing excellent value for a high-quality, authentic Portuguese sweet. Verdict: Despite the required wait, the high quality of the warm Travesseiro and the fair pricing make Casa Piriquita an absolute must-visit for a true taste of Sintra.

We took away their pastel de nata and pastel de sintra. Their pastel de nata was really good! Flaky crunchy crust. The egg custard wasn’t overly sweet and had a great balance of flavour. Not too oozy and not too set..perfect texture! We preferred this over the pastel De nata from Belem!

This was hands down the best pastry shop I’ve ever visited! The traditional pastries were freshly baked all day long, and you could really taste the difference. We arrived around 13:20 and were lucky to grab the very last table because it was so busy. Our waitress was incredibly kind—she explained each specialty in detail and even made sure to point out which ones weren’t suitable for food allergies. We tried four different pastries: 1. Travesseiro da Casa Piriquita 2. Pastel da Cruz Alta da Casa Piriquita 3. Pastel de Sintra da Casa Piriquita 4. Noz Dourada da Casa Piriquita My friend’s number one was the Travesseiro, while mine was the Pastel da Cruz Alta. Each pastry had its own unique taste—flaky, chewy, and full of flavor—so I’d honestly recommend trying them all and finding your own favorite! If you’re planning to visit Sintra, a stop at Casa Piriquita is an absolute must. You simply can’t leave it off your itinerary. If I could give them 10 stars, I absolutely would!

This place had fresh warm pastries for a great value! We got one each of pastel de nata, pastel de sintra, bolo de coco, travesseiro, and quejada. There was a wait around 10-15 minutes but the staff was friendly and super nice:)

Portuguese restaurant
Romaria de Baco is a delightful gem that encapsulates the essence of Portuguese cuisine in a charmingly restored setting. This restaurant invites diners into a cozy atmosphere, ideal for romantic dinners or gatherings with friends. The menu pays tribute to Portugal's culinary legacy, featuring beloved dishes like bacalhau à Brás and hearty Alentejo-style pork. Conveniently located near the Sintra Myths and Legends Museum, it’s an essential stop for food enthusiasts seeking an authentic experience.
We had a fantastic experience at Romario De Baco. The waitress was brilliant and picked us a wine we both loved when the one we ordered turned out to be out of stock. We really appreciated her offering to find us something similar and letting us try some to have with our meal. The meal itself was brilliant, excellent tapas which was served to us when each dish was ready, which helped us pace ourselves! We enjoyed beautiful fried seafood, Portuguese sausage in pastry, lovely pork belly and this delicious steak with pickles and garlic- order this steak tapas if you go it was incredible! One of the best dining experiences of our holiday and we’d love to come back. Thanks to all the staff for their patience and willingness to speak English too! Make sure you reserve a table a few days before as it was busy! I did this easily online.

A fantastic little restaurant that serves traditional Portugese cuisine. We came in for a very late dinner but the servers were still very friendly. Interior was warm and rustic and very cozy. We got couple tapas and a main dish to share. My favourite was the whole fried squid which was hot and fried to perfection. The puff pastry and goat cheese and ham was also very tasty and I would recommend you get multiple because you only get one per order. The shrimp curry was good but I think there are much better options in terms of the main course. Overall I would recommend this place if you’re ever in Sintra!

Found this place as we were walking in beautiful Sintra. We were warmly welcomed and started looking into the menu. The place is charming and the reviews seemed really good, however I left the restaurant a bit disappointed. After getting our meals, no one came to check how things were. I got the grilled Octopus and it was okay, nothing good or bad to say, it tasted okay. If you order that just make sure you don’t eat the piece of toasted bread.. it’s a deco. I asked the waitress about it when I left since it was rock hard and she explained it wasn’t meant to be eaten.

We were exhausted going in so our dinner experience was a little short. I got what was called grilled pork belly, but it was definitely fried. Still delicious if a little bit salty. The black sausage bread pudding was what we would call stuffing and was bland enough to leave untouched. She got what was called slow cooked pork but I would bet it was beef, deep dark brown and delicious and also labeled 'cheeks'on the invoice. We can eat anything, but if you have restrictions be very careful here. Service was average, ambience basic.

Thinking about this experience it wasn’t about the experience at all. It was about putting fuel in our body. But sadly, I didn’t even feel like I got fueled. We ordered the ham and cheese plate, which was weak in serving and impressing us. Then we order the pork in puff pastry. That was even more disappointing. They were tiny round bites that were dry. Overall, the service was kind and I don’t have anything bad to say about them. But the food was not enjoyable and I would not go back.

After a day of hiking and sightseeing we were looking for a nice restaurant. We found this place which offered great service and amazing food. The atmosphere there was very cozy. Best Port wine sauce we had in the region. The meat was cooked perfectly. And the desert was equally good. A definite recommendation for your stay in Sintra.

Finally delicious food in Portugal, (after traveling about 2490 km), a real salad that included, among other things, enough tomato and cucumber, soft and fresh bread, excellent wine, cheap prices, great service, and even honesty,,, they refunded me 50 euros that I gave by mistake (too much). An excellent culinary experience for a cheap price.

During my visit to Sintra, Portugal, I had the opportunity to eat at Romaria de Baco, and it was an experience that exceeded my expectations. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, with a charming mix of the rustic and the modern that reflects the historic spirit of the city. The service was excellent: the staff was friendly, attentive and willing to explain each dish in detail. I tried some typical Portuguese dishes and I was delighted with the quality of the ingredients and the presentation. The wine, as it could not be missing in a place with that name, was another great success: they have a very well-kept local selection. If you visit Sintra and want to enjoy good food, an intimate atmosphere and first-class service, Romaria de Baco is a mandatory stop. Without a doubt, I would come back.
