Art Museums
Nestled in the heart of Freiburg, the Augustiner Museum is a captivating destination for art enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Housed within a beautifully restored former monastery church, this museum showcases an impressive collection of artworks spanning from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The architectural brilliance of Christoph Mackler has transformed this historic site into a modern gallery that enhances the viewing experience, allowing visitors to appreciate each piece from various perspectives.
This museum was really nice and surprisingly extensive! I was amazed at the very beginning! You get to see some really cool statues and learn about some really interesting history!
Ms. K — Google review
A not very large museum, housed in the building of a former church. In general, you will see religious art. A unique and interesting fact is that there is a small room where you can watch the restoration of some paintings live through the window. There is a small painting exhibition in the attic. On the ground floor is an temporary exhibition with objects from the former German colonies in Africa. If you are not a fan of religious art, you visit it in about an hour.

Excellent museum. Not very big but quite interesting, especially because of the gothic statues and (pseudo) gargoyles that you normally could have admired only from a huge distance on the cathedral tower. You can walk up to them and also see them from above. Similarly they have some beautiful stained glass that you can admire from up close. Apart from these statues and the glass they have a fine collection of medieval paintings and (other) sculptures. Another bonus is their organ, which was played at noon on the Saturday that I visited.
Rob N — Google review
An excellent museum. I truly enjoyed the wonderful artworks on display. The lady at the front desk was very kind and welcoming. However, while visiting the second floor, one of the gallery attendants seemed a bit overly strict. I did not touch any artwork and kept a reasonable distance of about 30 cm, yet she repeatedly said "No, no, no" and followed me around, which I found quite unpleasant. Despite this, I greatly appreciate the museum and the effort put into providing such a remarkable experience.

The museum is set in an old church which has been renovated and converted. Beautiful building with an outstanding roof showing the ancient oak beams. All the pieces are of religious significance and all beautifully maintained and preserved. Unfortunately the staff watched you like a hawk which really put you on edge...
Cliff B — Google review
Fantastic museum in an impressively renovated building with beautiful art from the middle ages to 19th century.
Wouter B — Google review
A must-visit musuem while in Freiburg! Beautiful museum full of amazing art pieces from the medieval ages set in an ancient monastery. All the descriptions are well written and the museum is organized well. Much of the museum has been well preserved and restored, and there is a lot of construction on the exterior but it very minimally affected my experience inside. Great addition of an elevator for those handicapped or not capable of going up many flights of stairs. The special exhibits on the bottom of the museum and top were very engaging and well curated.
Let's H — Google review
During my visit on a Saturday there was supposedly a fire alarm and all guests had to be removed from the building. The Museum closed down much earlier than it was supposed to. We couldn't get back inside later to complete our visit, no money back or a voucher either. Many guests didn't even manage to go to the first floor. I missed the third floor, which I really wanted to see. This has never happened to me before in a museum. An unpleasant experience.

Mountain peak
Schauinsland, one of the highest mountains in the Black Forest, is a popular destination near Freiburg. Visitors can easily reach the summit by taking the Schauinslandbahn cable car, which offers stunning panoramic views over Freiburg, the Vosges Mountains, and the Alps. At 1,219 meters high, the summit station also features a 31-meter-tall lookout tower known as Eugen-Keidel tower.
Beutiful area to walk! A must do place for hikes for those that are visiting Freiburg or the area and locals alike!
Jason H — Google review
Had a lovely visit to Schauinsland last week. Because of a temperature inversion, we got lucky and could see the Alps! Great views from the tower.
Norma K — Google review
The view from cable car is stunning and breathtaking. But the kids playground and the tower were closed for some reason
Ekaterina C — Google review
Lovely location, fantastic view from the tower - which is now open again. Great walking in the area. Wilder than Feldberg, if not quite as high. Would highly recommend getting the cable car to enhance the experience. Well worth the ride - great way of experiencing the wild landscape.
Charlotte G — Google review
One of the best views in the black forest in my opinion. It is quite easy to arrive by public transport from Freiburg, and there are many trails to hike and even a small lake behind the mountain. The cable car is an easy and fun way to get to the top. When I visited the tower was closed, which is a shame but still amazing views all around.
Tal B — Google review
Great landmark for hiking. Bring your book as well as a drink. Sit at the top and relax. You’ll have an amazing view of the valley. Super beautiful paths for walk. If you have a semester ticket or a regional ticket, you’ll get a discount for the cable car.
Amir F — Google review
Cable car pulls you to the top of the mountain and rest of the way is hiking. There is a red line for steep hike, whereas a green line for easygoers. We took the red line to the summit. Incredible views of the black Forest and the hike was super nice through the thick pine forest. Highly recommended.
Sarani B — Google review
Nice place, decent fun experience with the cable car up. Scenery was nice but not amazing. It is something different for people who want to get away from the city. The ease of reaching here through public transport is a great plus point too.

Food court
Markthalle in Freiburg is a vibrant food market located just a few steps away from Martinstor. It offers a diverse culinary experience with options ranging from Italian, Middle Eastern, and Asian cuisines to French, Indian, Brazilian, and German specialties. Housed in the halls of a former printing press, this gastronomic hub features over 20 stalls resembling a culinary bazaar. In the evening, the atmosphere comes alive with live music at various bars and restaurants within the market.
I have come home from my travels over a week ago still thinking about the food from the Afghan food stall called Kabul. It felt like a warm hug from a grandma. I have only tried Afghan food once before when I was a child, so as soon as I saw the rice on display, it was like I was being drawn to it. I tried to use google translate but no luck so I just looked at the pictures and ordered the beef with rice and salad. It was so good I could fly back just to eat it again. It cost €14 for a plate and it’s a food hall so you just sit anywhere to eat. They had this amazingggg red chili sauce on the top of their counter which just elevated the dish. I was with friends and they got the Brazilian dish and they couldn’t finish their food because they said it was quite bland 😂 but ended up sharing my plate with me (even though I really didn’t want to share because it was so good) And then another friend of mine got the mixed bowl and they said the okra was really good. The servers spoke English and it was super quick service, very simple and although I was thinking I’d try some German food on my quick visit to the town, I will now always bang on about the Afghan food 😂
S A — Google review
A small food hall with good selection of cuisines, we ordered the German & Puerto Rico food, they were big portion and very flavorful. If you ran out of food options, come here and you will be happy you do.
Hong L — Google review
It’s not a regular food court! They have live DJ and cute disco ball on the weekend evening. But everyone needs to go to the asian food stall at the corner , close to the stage. I went there everyday along 3 days in Freiburg. As an Asian coming from Asia, i could tell that they serve really good quality of food and flavor bomb!
Angelia M — Google review
Dogs not allowed, saw the sign outside! Just walked inside to have a look alone but couldn’t buy anything. As I was in there during lunch time it was very busy. Lots of choices. Indian, Afghan, Badische, Spanish, Chinese etc. yes there were seating options. Pity, dogs were not permitted!

The Markthalle in Freiburg has something to suit every taste. I went for Afghan food and wasn’t disappointed. The prices were absolutely fair – overall Freiburg turned out to be surprisingly affordable. I’d definitely come back here on my next visit to Freiburg.

Nice place with different kind of food from the world 🌎. I tasted the Viet food pho and it was good enough. I appreciated more the ambiance than the food there. You can easily find tables and also discuss with other people if you want.

Schwabentor is a famous sight in Freiburg, known for being one of the gates in the city wall during medieval times. The Old Town features little creeks flowing through its streets, providing a refreshing experience and improving the climate. Located south of Freiburg is the Black Forest, renowned for its dense forests and iconic Black Forest cherry cake.
Freiburg has two surviving medieval city gates: Martinstor and Schwabentor, both originally part of the city's 13th-century fortifications. Martinstor, the older of the two, was significantly modified in the early 1900s with Neo-Gothic additions that gave it its current height and clock tower. Schwabentor was similarly enlarged in the 20th century. It features a mural depicting a Swabian merchant who, according to legend, tried to buy Freiburg with sacks of salt.

One of the gates of the old town. Very beautiful and very nicely restored. An interesting old-new contrast is given by the tram line that passes through the arch of the gate, on which modern trams pass.
Paul C — Google review
A very beautiful avenue full of clothing, food, cosmetics shops, a very special clock building, part of the entrance gates to the city

A very beautiful monument, being one of the only 2 remaining entrences in the Old Frieburg Citadel, along with Martinstor.
Codrin G — Google review
Beautiful architecture. Worth the walk. Besodes, you can find a great bakery below the gate. You can find a good variety of sandwiches and sweet breads. Perfect spot for a photo and snack pause ⏸️!!
Daniel G — Google review
The Schwabentor is one of the only two remaining old city entrances of the fortified city of Freiburg. It is a beautiful tower with a special architecture that lets you into the city center. From here you can walk into the center to all the shopping streets. It is a beautiful building with the painting that depicts the legend of Schwaben. With its merchant carrying barrels full of money to buy the city of Freiburg. The idea was not only absurd but even funnier when they found out his wife secretly took the money and replaced it with sand and stones 😂
Nikita N — Google review
Nice gate that leads to the hill on the edge of the city with many walking and hiking paths. Its in good condition and a main sight in the city.

The food and dishes are delicious serve and deco nicely and with a reasonable quantity of food that at the beginning can seemed it's not enough but believe me it is! The menu has a variety of food but as a suggestion will be nice to have more vegetarian options. Highly recommended worth a visit for a great culinary experience .

We stopped by for lunch after hearing some good things, and overall, it was a pleasant enough experience. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere was cosy. I tried a few of the soups, they were definitely the highlight for me. Each had a distinct flavour and the seasoning was spot on. The lentil soup, in particular, was lovely warm and comforting. That said, I wasn’t completely blown away by the rest of the meal. The mains lacked a bit of depth and could’ve done with more creativity. It felt a little on the safe side🤝 Still, the service was great and the team did their best to make us feel at home. I might come back for a bowl of soup and a quiet afternoon, but I’d probably try somewhere else for something more memorable. Thanks.

They served the worse ice-cream I have ever had. It was full of ice pieces inside and god knows how old it was. I ordered bcz I thought they do fresh. Its just turist scam. Only the view they have nothing else.

My experience here was very brief. I came on a Wednesday, 1,5 hours before closing time, for a piece of schwarzwald kuchen and a beer. Dattler was recommended to me for one of the best places to get schwarzwald kuchen. As I arrived, the waiter was very accommodating and friendly. Throughout the night the various staff have been very polite and professional. I sat outside, next to wall which overlooks the city including the cathedral. This view is probably one of the best in the city. It started to rain while I was enjoying my cake and beer and the staff lowered screens between me and the view to protect me from the rain but not low enough to block my view (very considerate). I had been waiting to try this cake for a long time so my expectations were high. It was really nice but I realised then that I'm not a big cake lover. No fault to the cake, it's just not my preference. I only ordered cake so I don't feel like I can give a fair rating for the food, only the service and atmosphere.

Great view of the city. Nice place to get the black forest cake with coffee or have a cocktail. Their meals are quite expensive though. We were able to get a seat without having a reservation. Would recommend after taking the cable car up Schlossberg.

This restaurant of fine German dining has its act together. Definitely worth the experience. Service was attentive and courteous. The ambience is amazing, wonderful view of Freiburg. If possible schedule your reservation 1-1.5 hour before sunset if the weather is right you will not be disappointed. The food flavor was excellent and the meat tender with just right medium preparation. Many compliments to the chef for near perfection! One of the best for sure. Romantic and quiet indoors, open air and cozy outdoors.

Absolutely good experience. I have been here maybe 15 years before but I was well impressed. I admit that we were lucky and got one of the best tables at the terrace. I recommend booking in advance because the terrace was fully booked on Saturday already a day before. The place is well kept but not too formal, the obvious highlight is the terrace with the amazing view on the city. The service was really good, fast and attentive without being intrusive, and at least some waiters speak English. The food is also quite good, quite a twist on typical German foods. Also a wide range if vegetarian and vegan options is available. Prices are in line with the quality, medium-upper range. Will be happy to come back in the future.
Giulio — Google review
There are a lot of customers in this restaurant, so you need to wait. At that time, I couldn't see the Black Forest cake at the scene, and I was very disappointed. But the manager told me that he would take out the finished cake soon, and he would keep a piece for me. So in the end I ate the Black Forest Cake and it was delicious. The cream had a strong cherry wine flavor and the cake was soft.

Fine dining restaurant
Wolfshöhle is an elegant restaurant located in Freiburg im Breisgau, offering sophisticated 5-course menus made with seasonal ingredients. The chef and owner, Sascha Weiss, creates modern German cuisine in a stylish setting within a beautiful old building with green shutters. The restaurant provides an upscale dining experience with healthy dishes and a diverse drink selection. Guests can enjoy the option of a 5-course tasting menu or choose from the à la carte selection.
Great lunch on Saturday 27th May on a lovely street in the old town. We ordered a la carte and really enjoyed the food, wine and service! The hot potato with the menus at the start was funny too - "you speak English to them, no you, no you" 😅😅🤭 The langostino with the asparagus and the meat dishes were really really good. Total €290-

We had high expectations of this Michelin-star restaurant, but left feeling very disappointed by our experience. It just wasn’t worth it. The food was quite good, but the wine pairing did the opposite of enhance the flavors of dishes. The selected wines were off-putting and detracted greatly from the meal, with the exception of an unusual, slightly sweet, almost vegetal red dessert wine at the end. In retrospect, I wish we had ordered a la carte and selected our own wine(s) for our meal. At 250€ per person for the 5-course menu and wine pairing, I give Wolfshöhle 2 stars for price value, at least for our visit. You really need to offer a better experience for this kind of money. On a side note, the restaurant was surprisingly empty, even for a Wednesday night, which put a bit of a damper on the atmosphere.

Drove a whole hour to this restaurant and based on google maps it allegedly open only to find it closed on a “summer break”. Update your opening times if you want to keep people coming!

Wolfshohle is Michelin star dining in Freiburg. The cooking is superb. One of the starters involved raw, but warm salmon that was incredibly good. One picture shows a close up of fried sea bass in a spectacular bouillabaisse sauce with a tiny drop of mashed potato on it. The other photo is potato on top of a tiny perfectly cooked egg and a sauce. We ate here twice this trip. All the staff are friendly and the chef comes to say good bye as you leave. Highly recommended

We were happy to learn that Mr. Fauster had opened his own fine dining in Freiburg since we enjoyed on numerous occasions his dishes in the old "Königshof" in Munich. So, no questions asked, we went for dinner in Freiburg recently. The location was known to us and has not changed, which is a good thing. The dishes were excellent and the service was likewise. Only two things prevented me from giving 5 stars. 1. The Chef attended/served personally one, respectively two tables. The other tables/guests did not seem to be of interest to him. 2. We paid the not too small bill. When we left the premises there was no one to wish us a nice evening or even thank for the visit. It felt as if one left a McD. This is a pity but hopefully not the new standard.

Really great. I had the chefs choice 3 course meal and it was amazing. Beef tartare with mustard ice cream! I felt like an iron chef judge.

The reopening of the Wolfshoehle puts Freiburg back on the culinary map. Excellent food and service. The dining room is lovely but lacks AC which would have been a plus on the hot day (~100 degrees F) that I visited (book outside if you are used to climatized rooms). Overall a great experience!

Basho-An is a bright and modern Japanese restaurant offering sushi, rice dishes, plum wine, and set meals. It is known for its lovely atmosphere and excellent service. The menu features a range of options at varying price points, with main courses and set menus available. Guests can expect professional and attentive servers delivering authentic Japanese cuisine, including sashimi, teriyaki chicken, unagi don, and sushi sets.
Lovely, atmospheric, Japanese restaurant with excellent, thoughtful service. Our servers were very professional and attentive. The food was excellent. It was the best sashimi I’ve had. I had a combo which was a hot dish with a cold dish so I chose chicken teriyaki (perfectly cooked and juicy) with Sashimi (very large slices.) it included a salad and miso soup. This is a real deal Japanese restaurant. It is pricey but you get quality across the board and I can’t recommend it enough.

Overall its a quite good place, would recommend to visit once :) Quality of the food were good and the portions weren't small, taste was also fine so nothing to complain about Price wise its like every other sushi place where its more expensive over here but acceptable. Ambience was quite nice and calming, the service was decent as well.

Friendly, delicious food with high prices. Good rice for sushi and sashimi was really good. The karaage is recommended by the chef to taste a piece first and then serve it to the customers. Other than that, everything was good.

Drexlers in Freiburg im Breisgau offers a blend of Italian and German cuisine served in a minimalist setting. The restaurant features creative plating and a wide selection of German wines, along with organic, healthy, vegan, and vegetarian dishes. With a focus on seasonal and fresh food, this culinary establishment is an offshoot of an established Freiburg wine shop, providing a modern bistro atmosphere with expertly curated wine offerings.
Absolutely delicious! Don’t need to say much. I loved every dish I had. Would happily come back over and over. 😋 Not to mention the really great service. Always so smiley

We have had an amazing dining experience at Drexlers. We were surprised from amuse bouche until the dessert. We were super enthousiastic about the dishes. The granita from lavas that accompanied the perch was so innovative and smart! The cauliflower with yoghurt and matcha was also one of the favourites. We really loved the wine painting with unusual choices and classics from Sicily, the Loire Valley and Baden. This restaurant deserves to be full every evening!
Robbert B — Google review
Food was good, but underwhelming for the price. While good food takes time, 3.5h for a 5-course meal is excessive. Service was great otherwise.
Paul Z — Google review
What a superb meal I had at Drexlers. I now wish I had the 6 courses instead of just 4! A really unusual amuse bouche of broccoli and kiwi fruit. I know, I’m still not convinced either, but the broccoli elements were great, I just wasn’t sure what the kiwi fruit interloper was doing there. The first proper dish was the pumpkin, lentils, salad, prosciutto & beets. There were lots of lovely flavours of this plate. The lentils had a nice earthy savoury taste offset by the sweet pumpkin puree, cutting through the fatty prosciutto. The element that let it down was the sliced pumpkin pieces, which really tasted of not very much. Might have been better to have a larger chunk of pumpkin on the plate. The fish course was the star of this show. The piece of pikeperch was perfectly cooked and the light and herby bouillon of vegetables complimented it perfectly. Add in a little horseradish kick and uh um yummy. A palate cleanser midway through of gin & tonic granita with lemon zest and mint. Duck with cabbage & shiitake with a side of extra confit duck under some parsley foam (side dish not pictured). That duck breast was cooked to perfection, and was matched in its magnificence by that sticky deep jus. I feel the side dish part was not quite hitting the same heights, not that it stopped me from wolfing it down. A cheese course that is not pictured. And then onto the dessert. Chocolate tart with poached pear and whipped cream ice cream with a berry sorbet on top. Nice chocolate filling in the tart, and the poached peach was excellent. The whipped cream ice cream was a bit weak in flavour, but the sorbet did punch through. Overall it was a thumbs up. Some petit fours of cantucci and tower cake were both deliciously nutty. One crisp & crunchy, one soft & velvety. Definitely a wunderbar meal

It's a limited midweek menu but we couldn't resist going back for a second time the next day. I only wish that we could have tried the full tasting menu at the weekend. Fabulous food and drink and service at a competitive price.

Fancy place,a bit overpriced. They have menu only in German though the staff is more than willing to help with the translation. That atmosphere is a little bit pretentious. But overall the food was tasty and service was impeccable. Definitely recommend for long slow half voice conversations over glace of wine. Wouldn't advise for a cosy family dinner.

Serving good quality food in a beautiful city. It's a little overpriced. I didn't find it overly pretentious at all, in fact it is lacking a little in ambiance of any kind - the red behind the bar is more like what you find in a bistro and some light background music might be something to introduce given that tables are quite close together. The Grauburgunder was a bit disappointing also. On the food side, the most important, the dessert was perfect, just incredibly delicious and we also really enjoyed the starter (a tartar), and the mains, swordfish and calf from the set menu (set menu costs 58 euro per person, or 45 euro if taking only one main -- portions are small-medium size. I recommend serving more squid with the swordfish though as it is mentioned on the menu card and I expected it to feature more. But overall, well done, just the ambiance lets the food down a bit.

Food was alright but notably worse than pre Covid. Service: staff was nice but extremely inexperienced. One had to take it with humor. Wait between main and desert was totally unacceptable (50 minutes). We started the 6 course menu at 7:30 pm and weren’t done until 11:40 pm.
