This iconic mountaintop church has a small museum & dome offering panoramic views.

It is a supernatural beauty. Stands majestic on top of the hill. The surrounding views are breathtaking. Do not forget to go to the top. It costs 2€. The stairs are narrow but the view from the top is absolutely worth it
The Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Mount of Santa Luzia is a monumental masterpiece of Portuguese granite architecture. Its imposing exterior is matched by a breathtaking interior, featuring stunning murals, vibrant stained glass, and remarkable acoustics. The panoramic views over Viana do Castelo, the river, and the Atlantic are unforgettable.
The Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Mount of Santa Luzia) in Viana do Castelo offers breathtaking views! If you can, climb to the top of the church — the path is narrow, but the panoramic views of the city and sea are absolutely worth it. Tickets are available from a vending machine on-site. The church itself is stunning, both inside and out. You can reach it by taxi or Uber, on foot (a steep hike), or by cable car. I went up by taxi and down by cable car, which was a lovely experience. Overall, this is a must-visit spot in Viana do Castelo — one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Portugal!
Large church with sprawling views of the entire area, funicular takes you very close, you can walk back into town via stairs ( start is right beside funicular exit) the is a cafe/ bar behind the church with good views, plenty of shady seating at rear and good views of the Atlantic. Fee entry except if you want to go to the top lookout of the church 2€
It stands majestically on the top of the hill. Massive in shape but light and airy in the interior. Gorgeous views of the surrounding areas from the top! Plenty of parking available at the top.
Well worth a visit , more for the sights from this vantage point of tge city of Viana de castelo. The Church itself is recent compared to other monuments in Viana. Use the little funicular car to get there.
Great views from the top. Definitely visit for them. There is a cafe at the top. But it was already shut at 530 pm, with still more than 2 hours to go for the sunset. Visit at sunset time maybe better. Walk up there from town centre is a 30 min scramble involving a lot of steps. I did that, but one may want to consider a taxi.
Beautiful Sanctuary with amazing view of the city of Viana do Castelo and all the surrounding areas. Visit the interior and marvel yoursel with the small but amazing art murals. You can take the funicular to visit the city after.

Century-old vessel that's served as a supply ship, floating hospital & ice breaker, now a museum.
Slide 1 of 8
Old medic ship called the Gil Eannes, that was used as a medic ship for cod fishermen in the North Atlantic sea(Newfoundland and Greenland). Lots of info and rooms to see 5 different decks even a medical operating room. For €5pp not a bad price. Will recommend if visiting Viana de Castelo. Also has a audio tour but we didn’t do that.
This is a must see, it has been lovingly restored and maintained, you will get to see how a hospital ship worked and how the crew lived. If you like ships and history then go on this vessel. 5€ entry fee is well worth it. Recommend weekdays or early mornings on the weekends
This hospital boat permanently moored at Viana do Castelo is well worth a visit but be warned there are steep narrow steps between the decks as you navigate your way around . It is a very interesting boat giving you an insight as to the working conditions the sailors have to endure to save lives . It cost €5 and I’d say it is not money wasted and recommend you visit .
The Gil Eannes offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of a real Portuguese naval hospital ship. It is impressively well maintained, with exhibits that vividly portray life at sea. There’s also a small but charming bookstore on board, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. The entrance fee is fair, and overall, the visit feels worthwhile. If you’re in Viana do Castelo, it’s definitely a place you shouldn’t miss.
Absolutely a must to be visiting the old but very good ship lady and to study the technology of the past.
It was great! It’s very well restored and it shows in detail how it was living and working inside this ship. Highly recommend. Expect to spend at least 1 h there.
Super nice with kids (and without), lots to visit. 🇨🇦 friends, you’ll learn about a part of our history ;-) Highly recommended.
We were really impressed by all the original fittings and equipment from 1955, all refurbished and looking like the ship was still in use. Engine and machinery space, bridge, galley, crew quarters, X-ray room, medical facilities etc were all properly equipped. There is a lot of information about the ship, its use and the Cod fleet. Would be nice in English but then we would have spent all day on board! An informative film with English subtitles tells you a bit about the hard and dangerous business of salt cod catching.

Very well prices at only 3 euros for both up and down (can be used seperate days). There's a lovely church at the top. The views are amazing! I stayed at the hostel next to the church and had an amazing sunset view. Would definitely recommend going.
Great funicular, good view, the car itself is small so limited seats, it takes approximately 5 minutes from bottom to top, currently 2€ one way or 3€ return, recommend coming back down on the stairs nice walk 20-30 minutes, entrance to stairs right beside the top funicular exit. Great views from the top.
I would recommend anyone visiting Viana do Castelo to go up to see the Sanctuary of Santa Luzia using the Elevator / Funicular system. It’s a very nice experience and you get to see a bit of the city and waterfront as you go up/down. My only suggestion for improvement would be the ventilation system. It was a hot and sunny day (25°C) and with 15 people inside the “Elevador” it got extremely hot and stuffy. You have trips every 15 minutes and on each trip you can take around 15/16 people. Price: One way - 2€ Round trip - 3€ Kids, adults and senior citizen pay the same price.
Well we didn't get to go up. The queue was over 40 people and it takes 20 people each time, and it runs every 15 minutes. Too long to wait on a hot Sunday afternoon......
There can be a wait, it was hot, but it is very inexpensive and definitely worth the ride up the hill(you can always walk down afterwards). The cherry on the cake is the “igreja” en cima.
The Elevador de Santa Luzia is a great option for going up or down to the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The price is reasonable, and if the elevator’s schedule fits yours, it’s definitely worth taking. The ride offers beautiful views, and in just about 10 minutes, you can travel comfortably between the top and the bottom.
Lovely 100 year-old funicular up to the beautiful church at the top of the hill. Fascinating how the xars going up and the ones coming down avoid each other. Amazing but short experience.
Easy ride up. Runs every 10 minutes. Cash only. Bathroom on site.

The museum is very special, which tells what people wear for different work 100 years ago, and how clothes are made from wood. For only 2.3 euro you can visit 2 museums. I highly recommend this one.
I visited the Museu do Traje de Viana do Castelo to learn more about the region’s historical costumes. The exhibition is very informative, and while the collection isn’t large, it’s definitely worth a visit. For just €2.40 (as of March 2025), it’s a great way to explore Viana do Castelo’s rich cultural heritage!
Visiting the Museu do Traje in Viana do Castelo was a special experience for me. The museum beautifully displays the traditional costumes of the vianenses, and since my family is originally from this city, it felt deeply meaningful to reconnect with these traditions.
The Museu do Traje (Costume Museum) in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, showcases traditional Portuguese costumes, textiles, and accessories. It aims to preserve and promote the cultural heritage associated with clothing in the region. The museum’s exhibits often include garments worn during festivals, ceremonies, and daily life, providing insight into the rich history and traditions of Viana do Castelo and the surrounding areas. If you’re interested in Portuguese culture and textiles, it’s a fascinating place to explore.
The museum is located in downtown Viana do Castelo. You can see traditional clothes here.
The museum is well worth a visit. Discovering the huge role that traditional vianese costume plays in Portuguese culture was fascinating. I especially liked how the social roles of women were presented through the costume. Exploring the museum comes with a bonus of seeing the insides of a grand old bank building that now hosts the collection. The bank vault is now used to display the museum’s collection of gold jewelry, which I found quite clever.
One of the best museums of its kind in Portugal, and the second best museum in the city of Viana do Castelo, it is really worth the visit especially because the price combined with the comparative arts museum is quite economical (€2.20 for a normal ticket for both in 2023). A fantastic museum, very worth it.
Amazing museum for all age. My kids love it. It has all kinds of clothes topical for Portugal. You can see colourful traditional clothes during the years. There are unique exsebition from golden jewelleries. Interactive board for the kids and different tools, helping to melted and proceeded the whole process. The ticket cost 2 EUR and give permission to visit one more museum. It's not free during the weekend, although is written. Enjoy it

Wonderful place to kite surf. Very windy beach so not ideal to stay long if you are not doing water activity.
Spacious clean beach. Cool water. Good breeze attracts wind and kite surfers.
Great beach with smooth sand, and two cosy beach bars (more terrace/bar then beach club. There is an active atmosphere because of the wind-, wave- and kitesurfing here. Swimming and just chilling is amazing here. Especially at sunset.
Praia do Cabedelo is a popular beach located in the northern part of Portugal, near the city of Viana do Castelo. It is a well-known spot for water sports enthusiasts, particularly for surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, wingfoiling, and stand-up paddleboarding. Here is some useful information about Praia do Cabedelo: Surfing: The waves at Praia do Cabedelo are generally quite consistent, with an average height of around 1-2 meters (3-6 feet). The beach is exposed to the Atlantic Ocean, so the conditions can be quite challenging, especially during the winter months when the swells are larger. Kitesurfing: Praia do Cabedelo is considered one of the best kitesurfing spots in Portugal, with steady winds and flat water. The average wind speed is around 15-25 knots, and the best months for kitesurfing are from May to September. There is a kiteboarding school on the beach that offers lessons, rentals, and storage. Windsurfing: Windsurfing is also a popular activity at Praia do Cabedelo, with good wind conditions and flat water. Wingfoiling: Praia do Cabedelo is becoming increasingly popular for wingfoiling, which is a relatively new sport that combines elements of windsurfing and kiteboarding. The conditions at the beach are suitable for wingfoiling, with steady winds and flat water. There are also several accommodation options in the area, ranging from camping sites to hotels and guesthouses. Parking: There is a large parking lot at Praia do Cabedelo that is free of charge. However, during the summer months, the parking lot can get quite crowded, so it's best to arrive early to secure a spot.
Really good beach, expansive sands that are very clean with sandunes. Very windy which is why it is perfect for kite/wind surfing 🏄‍♂️. If you don't do this, just watch - truly fascinating.
A clean and calm place good for sports like surf, but also fantastic for any nature enthusiast as not only you have the beach but just steps away natural coastal pine forests .
A bit out of the way if you’re staying in Viana Do Castelo but there is a ferry that crosses the river for €1.50 each way. It was wonderful little trip, the beach is beautiful and a lot of wind surfers around which is quite nice to see.
Nice place for nature, beach, kitesurf and surf lovers! Amazing view for the Santa Luzia Palace.

€1.50 to enter. It is a beautiful church inside. If you go back to some of the older reviews, they give you more history about the church and the paintings and tiles.
Stunning interior. Amazing tile art
We entered as a service was being carried out, so we had to be discrete and left quickly. The tiles on the walls are stunning.
Beautiful place. Love presentation of flowers.
This church is a real must see inside . I got the chance to have a Quick Look inside one night and was amazed at such a beautiful ornate church interior and to look at the building from the outside it would not lead you think there was such an interior . It’s simply amazing and a real must see .
(Translated by Google) The Church of Mercy is part of the architectural complex of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, which includes the former hospital and the "Casa das Varandas." This complex reflects the city's maritime prosperity in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Brotherhood of Mercy was founded in 1520 (or 1521, according to some sources) to promote charitable works, such as supporting the poor, the sick, and the widows of sailors. The interior of the church is decorated with gilded woodwork and Baroque tiles, reflecting the opulence of the period. The very simple exterior contrasts with the Baroque exuberance of the interior. -The high altar in national gilded woodwork (18th century). -Tile panels depicting the "Works of Mercy" (visiting the sick, feeding the hungry, etc.), dated 1723. -Ceiling frescoes painted by Manuel Gomes in 1721. -A Renaissance panel by André de Padilha (c. 1534) depicting Our Lady of Mercy, on display in the adjacent Misericórdia Museum. It is for sure one of the most interesting and climatic placest in Vianado Castelo, as well as the oldest part of the city. The first monument's and proves of human presence on this lands was dated for III-VII centuries, dated for Iron Age. The entrance cost 1€, it is also on the top of the mountains, there is no much history tables or informations about the place itself, but it is for sure very interesting, being so close to the church, you should not hesistate to visit!
Citânia de Santa Luzia Type: open air museum/ historical ruins Time spent: 15 min Price: 2 EUR Path for disabled: available Parking: small Bike parking: not available Transport: elevator of Santa Luzia+7 min walk Open air museum located over the historical ruins of the Iron(?) age. It was a small fortified city, typical for the Iberian peninsula. Its location (top of the mountain) helped the locals with the control the territory. Rounded houses were surrounded by primitive agriculture. Probably this Celtic city was destroyed by the Roman Empire.
Interesting! Iron Age/Roman village. Nice overhead walking ramp for great view with chance to actually roam at ground level.
While it's a great place to visit and the entry fee is low (should it be free though?). There is absolutely not a hint of information of the settlements or anything else about them. Just imposing metal walkways that have been constructed that completely ruin the views. So a great site but terrible design by whoever converted this into a museum. The entry is from a container-like box on the East side.
Very small castro, no information panels and 2 € entry - wasn't really worth it... The castro at Santa Trega in the north is much bigger, has reconstructed huts and a lot more information about the history of the place.
Oustanding site, a time travel experience in the heart of Viana do Castelo's pre-roman history, next to the cathedral, and also a starting point to fabulous tracks to enjoy lots of beautiful natural milestones on the hill, coasting the shoreline moving north.
Was not able to understand much about the place... The majority of the buildings were round and that was interesting, but was not able to understand why. Would be helpful if we could find more information. Was fun to see the sheep :D
Paid 1€ (under 26) and usual price is 2€. Fair price for a little historical site. Nothing too special

Modern space located in Viana do Castelo Marina. A modern library, with a very large space and located in the middle of Viana do Castelo Marina, which provides a relaxing landscape over the Lima River. It should be noted that it has a children's environment, which is great. The good organization and helpful employees are positive points of this space. Overall, it's a space for study and culture in Viana do Castelo, with imposing architecture.

(Translated by Google) The building of the Viana do Castelo Municipal Library has two floors, structurally divided into two distinct zones. One (zone 1) rests continuously on the foundation at floor level, and the other (zone 2) rests on the foundation and on two L-shaped pillars, freeing up the space below, as intended by the architectural project. FOUNDATIONS The existing soil type is characterised by heterogeneous embankments, with stone blocks mixed in, on rock at a depth varying between approximately 10.0 metres to the north and 20.0 metres to the south. For this reason, an indirect foundation solution was chosen, consisting of Jet-Grout columns, involving Micro-piles (Type IV) sealed in the rock. The area of the building resting on the ground, consisting of slabs and walls in an orthogonal grid, was supported by these columns continuously along the walls. The L-shaped pillars of the elevated area are supported by a reinforced concrete massif tied to groups of Jet and Micros columns. SUPERSTRUCTURE Two different situations can be considered: In area 1: Solid or mixed steel-concrete slabs supported by resistant reinforced concrete walls. In area 2: The structure of this area, taking into account the existing spans and the exposed concrete finish, is made up of a structural steel skeleton coated with reinforced concrete. The structural scheme adopted consisted of a grid of lattice beams at roof level supported by area 1 of the building and two metal crosses, which below the 1st floor become two L’s that, for architectural reasons, have one of the flanges placed in the least convenient direction, creating tension on the outer side of that flange. This metal grid suspends the flooring of the 1st floor of the Library by means of tie rods, which consists of a mixed structure of metal beams with reinforced concrete sheets on the upper face and on the lower face (exposed concrete). Given that this entire elevated area should have the least possible deformations, we decided to pre-stress the tensioned area of the cross supports with Dywidag rods and post-tension the composite slabs of the suspended floor. Finally, it should be noted that the exposed concrete is white concrete and that the special characteristics of the work, the stereotomy design, the presence of a metal structure, the proximity of the sea, and the sometimes small and sometimes large thicknesses of concrete (0.12; 0.30; 0.42; 0.54), required great rigour in the study of its composition, as well as in the study of the formwork. The collaboration of the contractor, particularly in the management and preparation of the work, allowed the planned building to be successfully completed, with the necessary quality.

Very peaceful; there aren't many people around in late March. One can walk along the beach or on wooden 'promenades'. Nice spot to collect coloured pebbles :)
Blue flag beach, small but very pleasant.
Great for an exhilarating walk on a windy day 😀
Part sandy part rocky this place is calm and quiet perfect getaway.
Beautiful beach, quite narrow. Nice for an evening walk.
Useless beach unless if you wanna catch shitty waves.

This museum is quite small, but it provides great deal of history! Awesome place!
First off, 90% of the photos attached to Casa Dos Nichos are UTTERLY WRONG and do not belong here. The metal lathe, ship model and numerous photographs of the interior of the Hospital ship moored in the harbor, have NOTHING to do with this small educational museum. Now, about this museum. The original inhabitants of Viana were Celts. The ruins of their city can be seen on top of the hill behind the cathedral. This museum is about those Celtic inhabitants. This museum is used to educate local children about their origins. There is precious little left of this culture here. The museums few artifacts are rare and worth seeing. The museum has built a model of the typical celtic homes and is a great indicator of what was on the hill. Take a look before touring Citania.

(Translated by Google) The Church of Souls was the first parish church in Viana do Castelo. Probably built in the 13th century, archaeological excavations conducted in 2008 suggest its origins may be even older, dating back to the 9th century. By the early 18th century, the church was in ruins and was restored in 1719. The churchyard served as a cemetery from the reign of King Afonso III (13th century) until the end of the 19th century, earning it the name "Chapel of Souls."

Who doesn't want to stay in a Chocolate Facrory? The hotel is the friendliest, with check in, check out kind and efficient, housekeeping goes above and beyond, and if if they know you are witing will come and tell you when the room is ready. The room sizes are large, and some have balconies off them. We loved the theme of our room. Very quiet and an easy walk into town or to the river. Breakfast is AMAZING! With a large plate of delights, fresh orange juice and coffee/tea. You can also special order at no added cost, bacon, eggs how you like them, Or oatmeal - all to order. The museum is fun, creative and interesting. The gift store - delicious!!
Excellent service, clean rooms with chocolate theme toiletries! Good breakfast, a chocolate product voucher and a museum visit included!
I bought a few chocolate bars and boxes at Fábrica do Chocolate in Viana do Castelo. The staff were very polite, and the chocolates were rich and full of flavor. I highly recommend this place!
Fantastic place to stay on the Camino. The museum was pretty underwhelming but everything else was fantastic. The rooms were clean comfortable and modern. The staff was super nice and who doesn't like choctlate smelling soap especially while walking the Camino. The location is right after you get off bridge if you are doing the Camino.
Quirky hotel with a chocolate theme. Chocolate drinks on arrival. Chocolate in the room. Excellent staff. Great location
Staying in a former chocolate factory was a new and sweet experience. The room was 2 story...small sitting room down and small bedroom/bathroom upstairs. Provided breakfast was excellent...huge tray of cakes, meats cheeses, pastries, fruit pancakes and chocolate for dipping. Also menu with eggs, bacon, and numerous other options. You have to have a hot chocolate at least once...dark, Rich and thick. Fabulous. All for a Very reasonable cost per night. Parking is a little tough...small cobblestone street. We got a good spot and never risked moving the car again. Very walkable area. Took an Uber (very inexpensive )if needed to go farther . All in all, recommend the experience
The service at this hotel is truly outstanding, with a team of welcoming and friendly staff members who go above and beyond to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The hotel is a unique establishment as it was one of Portugal's first chocolate factories, and the food is fresh and delicious, making it a must-try for any foodie. Each room has its own unique style and charm, offering a personalized experience that is tailored to individual preferences. Staying at this hotel also comes with many perks, such as discounts on food and merchandise, as well as a 25% discount on your next stay, making it an excellent value for money. This hotel is a top-notch destination that offers a truly exceptional experience.

The câmara municipal de Viana do Castelo is only few meters away from our hotel. There is a sculpture in front of it. The church is also a few meters away from it. Restaurants and stores are surrounding it. Entrance is accessible for wheelchairs.
Dear officials of Viana, is it really serious to organize an open-air clubbing party a Tuesday night in the heart of the city centre of your city in order to celebrate the opening of a universities sports event? Don’t you think there are clubs or special locations to organize this? Don’t you think your citizens need some sleep in the middle of the week? Do you know the music is so loud that the walls of the buildings located place of the Republic are shaking? You have a so lovely city but it seems you have lost some basic principles on how to run a city and organise events in a harmonious way.
(Translated by Google) It's a shame that the Viana do Castelo city council allows a national monument like the Santiago da Barra Fort to remain in this state. The moat is completely abandoned, looking more like an open-air dump! A terrible image for this beautiful city that calls itself the Princess of Lima. A negative mark for this city council, deplorable urban cleanliness!
(Translated by Google) It's surreal how agreements and licenses are signed to allow a festival like the neo-pop festival with music so loud that in Esposende-Antas you can hear a racket all night until 8:00 AM!!!! At least build a pavilion for this purpose! If it's like this here, just imagine what it's like in Viana!!! It's a disgrace to the public service! Even the tourists run away!!!
(Translated by Google) Terrible service from the new T.U. buses run by the City Council. Not only do they not respect schedules, are late, or arrive early, leaving people stranded on the sidewalk with no other means of transportation, but they also don't wait for people to sit down when they get on the bus, and the driver drives off as if nothing had happened!!!!!! Paying for such a disaster is a fraud unlike any I've ever seen, especially since people are always forced to go to the mall to get where they need to go!!!! Disgraceful!!!!
(Translated by Google) Public restrooms are needed. It's incomprehensible that with so many thousands of people in Viana during the festivities, there are no public places to urinate.
(Translated by Google) It's a disgrace that we can't access ANY shops while in a wheelchair! It's as if people with physical disabilities have no place in this city. We have rights, including Law No. 38/2004, and I intend to enforce them. This city is so sad, it's as if time has stood still. One wonders where the taxpayers' money goes?

Friendly staff in the visitor center. Provides very informative guide on the SmartGuide app with a free self-guided tour around the city. The hospital ship was my favorite.
This tourist office is terrible, the lady just gave me a map and told me to have a look…I can do that on the internet. I was looking for specific advice on which areas to visit in the north of Portugal and Porto but left with a bunch of useless maps. Don’t waste your time to visit. I was practically chased as she told me she had to attend to another person…yet gave me 0 useful information
Helpful, friendly and competent staff. Small minus for the condition of bikes that can be rented there. Some of them require replacement.
Very nice and helpful
Perfect english because my Portugees is bad. Buy some magnets with the logo of the city.
Poor informations. If you don't know what is happening in town and ask for it. You wont have the informations.
