A magnificent square with historic buildings that will transport you back in time. There’s something unique about that old brick. On the corners of the square, you’ll find locals enjoying wine, elderly ladies chatting, and tourists taking it all in. It’s a place full of atmosphere and charm.
Piazza Pio II is the elegant main square of Pienza, a Renaissance gem in Tuscany. It was commissioned by Pope Pius II, who was born in Pienza (then called Corsignano), and redesigned in the 15th century by architect Bernardo Rossellino. The square is framed by harmonious Renaissance buildings, including the Cathedral (Duomo), the Palazzo Piccolomini, and the town hall. Its trapezoidal shape and symmetry reflect the ideals of Renaissance urban planning. Piazza Pio II offers a timeless and peaceful atmosphere, with views that open out toward the Val d’Orcia countryside.
May 2025. Nice little plaza anchored by Pienza Cathedral (whose Google maps entry seems to be gone)
This is a gorgeous plaza that has plenty of space, fitting perfectly with a small town like Pienza. We were lucky enough to visit during the town's cheese weekend, which had many activities for both children and adults. Located right in front of the main cathedral, it's definitely one of Pienza's most notable landmarks.
Great atmosphere with a nice coffee shop and the crypt with a small underground labyrinth which is very cool for kids to explore. They had a good time.
Beautiful palace, interesting visit on the history of Pienza.
Ah, Piazza Pio II—where history whispers sweetly to you, but politely, like a well-mannered ghost. Strolling through this charming square feels like stepping into a Renaissance painting… if that painting included a few strategically placed gelato stands and tourists trying to take the perfect selfie. The architecture is stunning—so stunning that you might forget to check your phone (don’t worry, it happens to the best of us). The cathedral and surrounding buildings are like the wise elders of the town, silently judging your modern life choices—but in a friendly, “you’re welcome to join us” kind of way.

The Cathedral of Pienza is elegant and serene, with a beautifully harmonious interior. Its unique Renaissance design blends perfectly with the peaceful atmosphere of the town. The village is nestled in the heart of the Val d'Orcia, and yes, it’s near where scenes from Gladiator were filmed. The town is incredibly charming and feels like a postcard come to life, with beautiful stone streets, panoramic views, and Renaissance architecture. It’s a very popular destination, and once you visit, it’s easy to see why. Despite its small size, it draws a lot of visitors, so it can feel quite lively and a bit crowded at times. Still, it’s a must-see spot for anyone exploring Tuscany.
It's not the biggest cathedral in Italy, but it's a perfect fit for a small town like Pienza. It feels huge and calming inside, and is very well maintained. From afar, the cathedral's bell tower is a definite landmark. There isn't a lot to see, but I truly appreciate the soothing calmness this space provides, a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the rest of town.
Heart of the town. Peaceful. Consider taking a walk on the corridor starting behind the church. Beautiful view of the Tuscany fields.
Imagine erecting a small perfect renaissance city in only a few years so you can have asummer home. Pope Pius II obviously felt it important to his time as Peter of our church and a veneration to God 🙏♥️ incredible works by Bernardo Rossellino for a walk into our past and our history
Really nice historical place. Quiet and free of tourists in the morning. Beautiful views from the walls.
Definitely a great place to visit, nit a big one but great fit for the town of Pienza
Beautiful church. Free entry.
Just another Italian church.

We spent the evening with owner Sandra and her family and it was amazing. They are warm and welcoming and so hard working to ensure your experience is perfect. We did a cooking pizza class and it was so fun! And of course delicious. The starters through dessert were great and the wine was flowing. Their property is amazing and a must see - animals, garden and farm. We will definitely return to visit as we have new friends now in Pienza.
We had the most wonderful experience at Podere il Casale for our pre-wedding dinner with 22 guests. From the very beginning, communication was excellent — months in advance we aligned everything by email, from the menu and drinks to prices and details. Camilla was amazing throughout the whole process, always kind and helpful with every decision. On the night of the dinner, everything exceeded our expectations. The food was absolutely delicious, the atmosphere was beautiful, and our guests had such a great time. The staff was very kind and supportive with us, making the evening even more special. I highly recommend Podere il Casale — both for the quality of the food and the warmth of the team.
What a beautiful location! Our tour guide picked this place for us to dine at for lunch and it was very good! It was very interesting to learn about how everything they make there is from their farm! Their cheeses were absolutely delicious and their wines were very good as well! We bought a bottle of their wine, which we enjoyed during our trip prior to returning home. The pasta was a pretty heavy dish, but it was good! The lemon cannolis at the end were delicious! We would recommend visiting here.
We booked the cheese making experience here with dinner after. I really recommend one of their classes or experiences. It was truly a half day experience where we learned all about the farm’s approach to food and everything there is to know about cheese. Ulise, the patriarch of the farm, was with us the entire time and we felt very taken care of. The meal itself was beautiful - you can taste the care in what they produce. The greens in the salad were insanely flavorful. How impressive it was to have pasta from grains grown on the property. And of course- the cheese was magic. This is a special place.
We had dinner here while staying at a nearby agriturismo. The dinner was just delicious and we enjoyed every bite. The team at the restaurant was also wonderful. They were helpful and kind, explaining options and where various ingredients came from. The cheese tasting board was fun and their balsamic vinegar is so divine we came back the next day and ordered bottles of it to be delivered as gifts for people back home.
We had a fabulous experience at Podere II Casale. We enjoyed a very informative tour of their farm, and learned about the process of making Pecorino cheese. Their grounds are lovely, and we enjoyed an extraordinary sunset. We then had a delicious meal in their restaurant, filled with fresh products from their farm and fall flavors. We highly recommend!
One of my favorite things to do in Tuscany with friends and/or family is to take a cooking class with Sandra at Podere il Casale. It's always such a rich experience to tour their farm, see how they make their cheeses, and visit the animals and beautiful gardens. Then the best part is learning new cooking lessons in the kitchen, followed by dining on our creations. All of Sandra + Ulisse's staff are wonderful, happy people. Every friend and family member always comes away saying that was one of their most favorite experiences! A la prossima!
My wife and I were fortunate enough to partake in the pasta cooking class and we had such an amazing time, this was one of our most enjoyable experiences that we had in Italy. The entire staff was great and very informative and knowledgeable. The views while eating our meal that we prepared were breathtaking. They have it all. We will recommend to anyone who wants to take an authentic pasta cooking class in Tuscany.

Pienza, probably my favorite Tuscan town but then again, I've only visited about a dozen of them out of probably 100! If you go to Tuscany, Pienza has to be on your list. Relatively low amount of Tourists (for Tuscan standards), but stuff is still expensive. Still, it has a peaceful and relaxing vibe to it, so no complaints here.
When’s the last time you prayed in a church that was built around 1000 AD? When’s the last time you prayed? A hidden gem among churches in Tuscany! Don’t be shy ☺️ look around and be present to what the moment will be 🙏
A nice church but just a normal one. You can park by here to walk to gladiators field area. Free parking.
Very cute little church, with the bell-tower over 1000 yrs old, & side bldg over 800 yrs old.(in great shape)
Historic chapel overlooking the land where gladiator was filmed! Worth the stop on a tuscan road trip
Must stop if you're driving close by, lots of history and gives a real feel for medieval Tuscany.
I'm crazy about the icon of landscape! It is Pienza and Val D'orcia.
READ: If you come here as guide to park to visit the Galadiator shooting spot. As of July 2023 is closed for renovation. When we came here, we parked outside, along the highway. And walked to enter the street, as there are also indication of no entry. When you see the side of the church, just follow the rough road then you’ll see the pathways, obviously created by people coming to see the spot, just follow that trail and you’ll the cypress and the shooting spot of the gladiator.

The property is wonderful with all the personal items on display, it gives the touch of a true home. The property looks like in the pictures and the location is great. The room was specious and clean. bed and pillow were comfortable and the bathroom had all needed amenities. The host was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good. Great value for the money!
We had really good time in Monticchiello. La Casa di Adelina is perfect place to stay. Francesco is very nice host. Amazing breakfast, nice and comfy room.
Monticchielo is such a beautiful village, superb location for visiting Val d'Orcia or enjoy in this quiet place. Casa di Adelina is very polished, decorated tastefully and comfortable, inside the old family house. B&B is hosted by Francesco for more than 2 decades now. He prepared excelent breakfast and served it in a beautiful, comfortable living room with windows overlooking the rooftops of this old town. Every detail of the decoration was carefully considered. We truly enjoyed our five days spent here in September.
Loved our stay at B&B La Casa Di Adelina. The town of Monticchiello is quiet and very walkable. Francesco greets you when you arrive and is very friendly. He can give advice on where to eat, hiking trails and wineries near by. He makes your breakfast every morning and his soft scrambled eggs on cheesy bread is delicious! I highly recommend staying here.
Spectacular location and a wonderful, responsive and gracious host. Grazie Francesco - we had a great time in your beautiful village. Thanks for taking good care of us.
Really nice rooms in a beautiful house in the centre of Montichiello. We loved Montichiello. You do need to park in the free parking outside the village, which is a 5-minute walk uphill, but very worth it. Nice breakfast.
This place is really very special! A very old and charming home with rooms and common areas which are artfully put together (which makes a lot of sense as Francesco is an artist!). Lovely small shops and restaurants within a 30 second walk. Many breathtaking views from different points around town. Several choices for walks, including one we found that goes far into the woods. And Monticchiello is a really special tiny village itself- we are so happy we decided to stay here instead of Siena or even somewhere slightly bigger. Also, Francesco is an INCREDIBLE cook and baker. I asked for some tips on making crepes before leaving. :) Thank you so very much, Francesco, for a wonderful holiday!!! Who you are and what you’re doing is really wonderful. :)
My friend and I had an amazing stay! Francesco made us feel at home and was very attentive to how we were enjoying the area. When we expressed an interest in hiking and biking, he made a custom trail map for us based on what we wanted to see in the area. The rooms were great and breakfast was perfect! Wish we could have stayed longer to explore the area more. Will definitely recommend this BnB to friends!

What a beautiful store this is! And what a different choices of wine! We were welcomed very friendly by Ghino and he helped and advised us perfetto! His words ‘you don’t need to spend a lot of money on a good wine’ will stay with me! Can’t wait to try the Ghino’s wine! Can’t wait to visit again!
Wine people, go there and speak to the owner. Listen and learn.
One of the nicest people I have ever met in Italy, we came for a bottle but left having tasted 4 exceptional wines for free and 8 bottles that were bought! Incredible selection, too, truly a gem!
The best enoteca I visited in Tuscany. Ghino showed that he has enormous experience in wine and gave several tips on which type of wine I should choose according to my budget and tastes.
Ghino was so welcoming and friendly as soon as we stepped in the door. He was so down to earth, offering options to suit our price range. His philosophy that you don't need to spend lots of money to drink good wine was a breath of fresh air. We can't wait to visit again!
Agree with all the wonderful reviews here. When I went to this place it was closed and when I call the phone number listed in the shop, Ghino was more than happy to open the shop for us . Ghino was such a wonderful person to have an engaging conversation.Though iam not an expert in wine, I could make out that Ghino had an immense knowledge on wines and I have bought 6 bottles at the end based on his recommedations. If you are in and around Pienza, I would highly visiting this place.
Ghino was incredible. He treated us like family and speaking with him and trying his wines were a highlight of Italy. We ended up purchasing a case of wine and couldn't have been happier with the decision. I highly recommend making the trip.
Very welcoming store. Fantastic selection of wine and a great tasting experience where Ghino and sons are happy to open any wine for you. Recommendations are all excellent. Shipping is also easy. Always our first stop of the holiday.

The property is absolutely stunning, it feels like stepping back in time, especially with its beautiful, non-operational church on-site. Everything is simple yet elegant, authentic, and refreshingly unpretentious. Most of all, the warmth and passion of the staff made our stay unforgettable. Esther, Valeria from front desk and Andrea from maintenance went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful experience. They took the time to show us around and share the history of the place, and it was truly a joy to see their friendly faces and chat with them each day. We were so taken by the experience that we ended up canceling our trip to Venice and extending our stay. We will definitely be back!
We had the most wonderful stay at S.Anna! The monastery is magnificent, and takes you back in time. We really enjoyed the peace and quiet, sitting in the church having the place to ourselves, walking around and being greeted by fireflies at night (we visited in June), and the sound of nature to fall asleep to. One of the best breakfasts you can enjoy in the garden in the sunshine. What more could we ask for? Valeria and Esther went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible and were kind enough to help us with other aspects of our trip. Kitchen staff were lovely too. One day we hope to be back to this magical place.
An exquisite venue for tying the knot in Tuscany. Nestled amidst the picturesque countryside, just a short drive from the charming city of Pienza (approximately 10 minutes away), this location provides all the essentials to bring your dream wedding to life. As a seasoned wedding photographer in Tuscany, I've had the pleasure of capturing moments here on three separate occasions, and the atmosphere was nothing short of perfect. The staff is exceptionally friendly and accommodating, adding to the overall wonderful experience.
Wonderful quiet Tuscan countryside setting, wonderful hosts, and great food! My third trip here, but first under the new ownership. Special experience, come appreciate if you get the chance!
I stayed here right after they opened in 1998. It was the first time I had farm fresh eggs and milk. I remember Stefano giving us grappa after dinner and having more wine than we could all possibly drink then crashing in our cells only to go hiking the next day. We went everywhere across the property including the woods and discovered an ancient wall that had been used in a battle centuries or even millennia ago. The vistas were incomparable. The food was amazing. Memories that will never die.
Words can hardly capture how magical my experience at Sant'Anna in Camprena was. It truly feels like heaven on earth. From the moment you step onto the grounds, you're transported into a world of peace, tranquility, and spirituality. The sweeping views of the Val d'Orcia take your breath away, and the monastery's architecture, frescoed walls, and ringing church bells make you feel as though you've stepped back in time. If you visit, don't miss the chance to enjoy an aperitivo in the courtyard or lemon garden at sunset. It's unforgettable. The accommodations are modest yet extremely comfortable, with thoughtful details and small touches that make the stay special. Sant'Anna's charm lies in its simplicity, though I've heard that upgrades like a swimming pool, spa, and gym will be added soon. What makes this place truly extraordinary, however, is the staff. Esther and Valeria are incredibly kind and attentive, always going above and beyond to make your stay memorable. Saying goodbye was harder than I expected. I didn't want my time there to end. But I left feeling like I had found not only a new favorite place, but also new friends and a home away from home. Thank you for everything, Sant'Anna. I can't wait to return.
Amazing views, dinner and breakfast were so good, must do. Simple rooms but regardless the views outside are astonishing to look at.
Valeria and Esther are incredible hosts. The heart of this hotel. Beautiful place.
