Museum
Cafe
Viking history museum whose star attraction is a climb-aboard replica of a 9th-century ship.
Slide 1 of 8
I liked that it was close to the airport, yet has enough to see to kill a few hours. I almost read everything, I also liked that you are allowed to step foot in the boat that crossed the ocean for the 1000 year anniversary. I would have loved to read some more, but my son was antsy. We did, however, play some chess downstairs.
Small reasonable priced museum near the airports. Tickets are discounted if bought online. The museum focuses on the viking era of exhibition and settlements. Its more reading than artifacts, but I enjoy viking history. I took my time and spent about 1-1.5 hours. Gift shop has neat souvenirs. Free parking. Water closes inside.
We had some time in Keflavík before checking into our hotel so we decided to check this museum out. So glad that we did as we really enjoyed it. Don’t let the outside of the building deceive you. It looks small on the outside but it is packed full of exhibits in different halls so there is a ton to see and learn about Viking culture. The replica of the Viking ship was really cool and you were able to walk on it as well. Staff were excellent and friendly. Well worth checking out if you are in the area.
Very informative museum on the entire Viking history...will take several hours to really read, see and experience the place in its entirety. The ship that sailed from Iceland to Canada in 2000 for the millennial celebration of Leif Erikson's crossing. Unsure if you're concerned about price, but fairly pricey admission tickets if you just come on your own. I did not have time to tour the grounds.
Saw some Innuit magical creatures carvings that I never saw in any of the other museums so that was really cool. There's also a large viking boat that you can board (it's a recreation, but really good one). There's also chainmai and helmets you can put on to take photos, they're quite heavy
Upon learning about this place, I locked in a time to visit. It was a Sunday morning in November and I was attended by a person who must have been on a super absorbing call. I followed a few hand gestures of directions and disinterested comments along with a suggestion that I could dress up in the warrior costumes (if I’m going Nordic face I will engage the local smith). There were also many information boards that did educate me on a few things I was ignorant of at this stage of my life. Really it seems set up for school children and seemed a little wasted on me. The prize was the long ship replica facing the large windows and being able to step onto it was a great experience. The burial section was okay but was a bit like an afterthought add on.
Small but interesting and informative museum. Lots of exhibits and reconstructions of Viking wares. Worth a visit.
Amazing Museum if you love history and curios!! Super clean and very well exposed!!

A nice, small stop to see, with no wait or admission fee.
This is a fun, child-friendly attraction at the north end of the promenade in Keflavik. Basically, you find a playful cave which a huge chair in front. Inside there is a bed, shoes and toothbrush fit for a giantess, which is also inside the cave house. Opening times seem to be 10am to 5pm daily unless weather is bad. Entry is free.
A fun 10 minute diversion. Based on a children's book, the giantess sleeps in her cave. You can hear her snoring.
Little kids would love it! Fun place to visit in the KEF airport area as a quick 10 min stop .
A very whimsical art display that presents Gigantica the giantess. She collects pacifiers from parents of children who don't need them anymore. loved the pacifier tree.
Fantastic display. Well worth the visit. Kids would love it. Surprised to find out it was free entry and no charge for parking.
This place was very strange and caught me by surprise. I’m sure some kids might have fun here but I feel like some would definitely be scared of it. Also it sounded like the giant was supposed to have animatronics but we couldn’t see anything moving. It’s possible that it was broken. It’s an interesting place to stop for 10 minutes.
We had some time to kill after landing at the airport and before heading to the Blue Lagoon, so we were looking for things to do. This was one thing that sounded interesting, so we stopped by. It was so cute, and so funny. Kids would love it!

Unique museum with interactive exhibits showcasing the history of pop & rock music in Iceland.

Really nice museum specifically for Icelandic rock n roll bands over the years. This museum has quite a few interactive features, such as presentations through vinyls, electronic drum set, and electric guitar.
I was here 9 years ago, and not willingly but because our flight got delayed for 12 hours and the airline brought the whole plane here. Safe to say if was a weird experience but I I enjoyed the museum…except for maybe sleeping on the floor with 50 other people… Anyway I write this review as something to laugh at but if you’re interested in music and rock, especially the genre from Icelandic origin this place is for you.
Museum is pretty small but library is nice.if you have some time to spend on your way to the airport it's a good spot
great experience. spent so much time in this museum. highly recommend to music lovers.
If you didn't know that Iceland had a rock and roll history, enough for a museum anyway, as I did not, they obviously do. It was an educational experience with interesting displays of history, art and memorabilia.
Visited 2 years ago: Very well done museum! Love the album covers, play instrument area like the electric guitar, drums and keyboards, the different interactive exhibits like choosing your record on the turntable and getting a visual education on the chosen record. There was also the cinema playing a video as well. It's very well curated and the facility is pretty amazing! They also have other rooms/halls that service for music school and concert/multifunctional hall.
Had so much fun. Went in expecting not much so was pleasantly surprised. We only saw 2 other people in the whole place. Got to listen and familiarise myself with Icelandic music and stars, play with a kareoke machine (some Bjork of course!) and drum sets and read the wall info. Defintely a good place to kill time if plane gets delayed like ours did...
Really cool interactive rock museum in the Njardvik area - bout 15 minutes from the airport maybe a half hour outside of Reykjavik. Awesome history, very modern and clean, good price for entry. Expect to spend about 2 hours here.

Well-presented expositions on one of Iceland's most important victories, its independence. Collection and advertising of being hit with a plastic bag.
This museum is more than just miniature boats. It contains collections of various items belonging to townspeople. There was an extensive pen collection, sewing machine room, even a space dedicated to the designs of plastic bags over the years. There was also some video art in a big black room that seemed to be in Arabic. I gave 4 stars because it all did feel a bit random, but it was very quaint. I probably wouldn't go back, but it certainly kept us engaged because each room was unpredictable!
132 shipsmodels of Icelandic fishing boats but they have been moved to the loft. You have to go through some rooms with "art" and find the stairs. There are no signs saying so They plan to restructure with fishing and art separated in the winter 22-23 Seniors free :-) Open on whitmonday!
Nice museum with a lovely collection of model boats, sewing machines, local art, small geological section. Plus some other local displays. Well worth an hour of your time if you are in Keflavík.
A three-story Trading House from 1877 forms the core of the Duus Museum in Keflavík, Iceland. Grím Karlsson's boat models are a highlight. There's also a 19th century winding wheel in the Duus Museum at Keflavík, Iceland, was once used to lift goods into the warehouse of the Duus trading company.
Very interesting local museum. Staff friendly and informative
We have so much fun chatting with a lady that works there. I wish there were some more explanations in English.
Small museum rich with Iceland fishing history. Great way to kill an hour on a rainy day

The Seaman's Monument (1978) on the waterfront at Keflavík, Iceland, is in the form of an anchor.
Pleasant surprise, simple yet beautiful landmark in the heart of Keflavik. The anchor amplified the fishing/sailing history of Iceland.
The Sailor's Monument is located in the open grassy area in front of the sea and promenade in Keflavik. It is the work of Ásmundur Sveinsson and originally unveiled in 1978 at a different location, being moved to its present spot in 2000. What you see is a large scale and artistic take on an anchor paying homage to the history of sailors and fisherman in Keflavik. It is a large and hard to miss monument when making your way through town. There are a few more monuments and historic fishing boat (Baldur) which you can view in the area as well.
While waiting for a flight at KEF, before giving back muy retal car, I went walking a bit on these shores. Small nice town, windy :-)
Nice statue in the waterfront park.
This coast is much different from Mediterranean.
Keflavik. Nice walk on the sea side

Mountain peak
Nature & Parks
Slide 1 of 8
Mount Keilir (378.m) was made in a volcanic eruption under a glacier during the last Ice Age giving it the distinctive cone shape. The drive from the highway up towards the mountain is 8.km on a ROUGH gravel road. The car park is aprox. 45.min walk from the mountain and the hike up on the mountain top it self is approximately about 30-40.min for an average hiker. On the top there is a perfect view over the whole of the Southern Peninsula of Iceland. Things to be aware of: -Bad or no telephone reception in the whole area. -Hiking route is very exposed to the weather and windy condition. -Not recommended to hike this mountain in limited visibility or icy-condition.
Seen it from a distance on a bus ride. Beautiful volcano
very nice open view, highest peak in the area but the last bit is quite steep and slippery because of the sand and gravel so not too easy
Nice and close volcano to visit if your just staying in the southwest area. I didn't get very close to it but there is trail that leads to the summit.
Amazing, enigmatic, hyaloclastite mountain. It was created during subglacial eruptions during the ice age. It is easy to climb, and the view from its top on a fine day is to be remembered. On top of the of the mountain is a perfect view over the whole Reykjanes Peninsula. There is a concrete table with a view direction map on a metal plate. Be careful: -hiking route condition depends on the weather -windy area -there are no information desk, toilet, shop, etc -poor or no phone reception 4x4 cars can drive on Höskuldarvegi and there is a parking at Oddafell and from there is a trail to Keilir. From Höskuldarvellir there is ca. 3 km walk to Keilir. Keilir is good visible from the highway no 41 (e.g.when you drive from/to Keflavík-Reykjavík).
Great eruptions! 10/10 would do again. Hot pool right next to it is a little too hot atm though
Keilir is a beautiful piece of nature's art. What a lovely cone. Very iCONIC. Everybody who has ever rated Keilir less than 5 stars simply doesn't understand. BOOOOO haters
Excellent pile of gravel, very conical.

Interesting little spot to stop at. There is a sign in English with details and you can perk inside. You can also walk to a few other interesting things and drive 2 minutes to the Viking ship that you can walk in. Worth the stop!
Always a nice stop when around Keflavik.
Stopped by before leaving to the airport. Really cool to see how some of the houses were built and how they may have lived. No other tourists were around which was nice. Couldn't go inside though. Worth a stop to take a look.
The building is closed but anyway you can walk on the yard and see what's inside through windows. Don't worry - nobody lives there ;)
A short visit is all that you can do here (you can't go inside) but it's an interesting read and a beautifully restored house.
Visited 2 years ago: A nice little detour to visit traditional 1800's fisherman's cottage made from turf, stone & timber. There's a nice information sign and area to take photos. Not visited by many visitors in the area. But great to visit briefly before heading to nearby attractions. Note, the route to this area is not paved.
Pretty forgettable sadly. There's a grass roof or two. You can't go inside. Stop only if you're passing by. Much better things to see!
Nothing special, but is cool to see how the Icelanders lived long ago. It's small, but free and worth the walk around if you have time to kill on the way to the airport or are stopping at the Viking museum. There's even animals you can pet!

Excellent and very descriptive museum! We learned a lot about Reykjanes history, which was very graphically presented. The lady at the reception was very attentive, friendly and gave us a lot of information about attractions in the area including the Bridge between continents and the excellent fish restaurant Vitinn.
The welcome at the cultural center and the heritage museum is as warm as I found it everywhere in keflavik. Well I'm not a fan of abstract art, the heritage museum has a mind-blowing and very original collection of items including thousands of ballpoint pens, boxes of matches and pocket lighters, ending incredible 1170 hand carved fishing vessel replicas. If only for this latter part, do not miss the third floor in the Attic space of the building.
Incredible exhibition of model fishing boats and Icelandic culture. The curator was friendly and made us feel like family, explaining in detail the story of how the boats were made. She even let us hang our coats in the staff room. Worth a visit!!
Wonderful museum with great exhibits about Iceland. Much better than spending time in the airport waiting for my flight
Beautiful and varied museum. Highly recomended.
