A very nice place to tour. Information is available in multiple languages and the path clearly marked. The views from the top make for great pictures and memories!
Great Experience… could be much better with guided tours or at least an audio guide. Photos of Oreo walking along the Sil river across from the castle.
The ticket booth woman was very helpful, follow the yellow arrows like on the El Camino but.. I still wandered astray. The castle is in excellent condition with extraordinary views of the City. Well worth the cost of admission which was free today. Spend more than an hour here.
From the gates, it looks like a fairy tale castle, inside it is fairly mundane but I suppose worth it for the views. It has been extensively renovated but I don't think it gives much of an idea of what it was like originally
Ponferrada Castle - The templar heart of Castile Visiting the Castillo de los Templarios in Ponferrada is like entering a historical novel. Located along the famous Camino de Santiago, this imposing templar castle dominates the city with its crenellated towers, moats and mighty walls. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it was expanded in the following centuries, becoming one of the largest fortresses in northwestern Spain. The structure is majestic: over 8,000 m² of surface, with an irregular plan and a scenographic entrance protected by a drawbridge and two twin towers A. The twelve original towers reproduced the constellations, a detail that adds charm and mystery B. Today the castle houses the Templar Library and the Historical Research Center, with over 1,400 volumes, including facsimiles of works by Leonardo da Vinci. It is a place that not only tells the story, but keeps it carefully. The castle is loved by visitors for its beauty, panoramic view of the city and unique atmosphere C. It is open to the public and easily accessible on Avenida del Castillo, in the heart of Ponferrada A. The Castle of Ponferrada is much more than a tourist stop: it is a journey through time, a tribute to the Templars and a cultural reference point for the entire region. If you are looking for history, mystery and architectural beauty, this is the right place.
Iconic and emblematic place to visit it. The whole town breath the atmosphere of Knights of Templairs.
It was a wonderful historical Castle…a long stories behind and also a story about the Templar Knights

Incredibly well presented museum in Spanish and English. Fascinating industrial history. Highly recommended.
As someone interested in engineering, this was right up my street but it's also an excellent history lesson of how the area was shaped by mining and economic development. Very friendly staff. Thanks!
A nice museum in a previous powerplant de interior is 90 % complete which is a unicum. The restaurant is in a building where the first powerplant was but the machines are gone 😢 except for a portal crane.
Very good Museum!
Good place to learn more about the history of the Spanish Minery
Very well preserved old power station, really interesting to look at even if you aren't interested in the history of power generation.

(Translated by Google) The Clock Tower Gate, formerly called Gate of the Eras, belongs to the urban wall of Ponferrada. The tower stands on an attractive semicircular arch, which belongs to the only gate of the old medieval wall that is preserved today. This access connects the Town Hall Square with the famous Clock Street and the old town. Built in 1567, it is a building of great historical value within Ponferrada. Initially the tower consisted of two bodies that correspond to separate areas where the coat of arms and the clock are located. At the end of the 17th century, a third part topped with a capital that houses the bell was added. Although the most representative element of this tower is its clock, there are other elements with which it shares space. On both sides of the tower we find an engraved shield, while at the top there is the bell, as well as a large spire.

(Translated by Google) More than a century old, it has seen the city grow since it was still a town. It is a plant that announces the arrival of spring in the capital of Bierzo from the old town of the city and one of the most symbolic images of Ponferrada. The wisteria of the House of Shields in Ponferrada is an ornamental tree that, together with the sculptural support that supports it, whose author was Pablo Voces Bello, due to its showiness and size, has earned a place among the most visited and photographed tourist attractions in the town. The tree, which during spring graces Gil y Carrasco Street in front of the city's Templar Fortress, is a symbol of the capital of Bierzo that has come, thanks to its flowering that is always accompanied by intense purple colors, to co-star in the poster for Holy Week in Ponferrada (declared of National Tourist Interest) in 2018. A plant from the New World that has the instructions of the botanist Bernabé Moya for its care tasks, by the City Council workers. When she arrived in Ponferrada it was still a town, and little by little the centenarian lady has embraced the entire history as a city with her life, whether first as a tree with no further attraction, later sheltering a churrería for many years, or now highlighted as another element of the Museum. The 'Lady of Ponferrada' as baptized by the late painter, Francisco Fueyo, was planted in the middle of Gil y Carrasco street presiding over the façade of the middle section of the building, just below an elegant balcony with a simple body on corbels.

Interesting little railway museum. Some engines restored, some cosmetically restored, some just about saved after years in the open. (Translated by Google) The town hall building, located in the historic center of Ponferrada, overlooks the main square or town hall square. It is a Baroque building constructed between 1692 and 1705 according to the designs of the master architect Pedro de Arén. The palace has a massive layout, built of masonry with regular granite ashlars. The façade follows a symmetrical structure with a central body, topped by a gable decorated with the symbols and imperial coat of arms of the Habsburg dynasty and surmounted by an imperial crown displaying the Golden Fleece. Flanking this central body are two slate-roofed towers topped by small domes crowned by tall spire-like pinnacles, following the Herrerian style of the Habsburgs, characteristic of the 17th century. On the ground floor, there is a wide lintelled doorway flanked by two Corinthian columns supported by bases and two latticed windows. The first floor is particularly notable for its long, continuous balcony supported by simple corbels. The two towers feature two latticed balconies above which the coat of arms of the city of Ponferrada can be seen. As far as I know, the town hall building is used exclusively for public purposes, so it cannot be visited by tourists. However, the façade of this imposing building is certainly worth a visit. Very close to the town hall is the Clock Tower, a Renaissance tower built over the Arco de las Eras, an old gate in the medieval wall, the only one still standing today. The Town Hall Square is a large, irregularly shaped pedestrian plaza that forms the nerve center of the town. Along with Calle del Reloj, it is the most touristy area in the city, with a good number of bars and restaurants where you can enjoy tapas and a good local wine.

The guided tour is worth it, to get a bit more detail of the history and the use of space. Make sure to include the visit to the belltower. Wonderful scenery and an architectural gem in a secluded mountain village. The tavern behind the monastery is also worth a visit, to drink some local wine like a monk.
Extremely interesting and well preserved in natural state. Take the guided tour… this is not to be missed
(Translated by Google) Curious monastery to see. It seems that the old one was destroyed after the Confiscation of Mendizabal and then rebuilt. Despite everything, it is curious. There is a plaque near the cloister that comments on some celebration in Latin, I think it dates back to the year 933!!!!!
(Translated by Google) A wonderful place. The monastery is a beauty full of history, located in a privileged place and environment full of great mountains full of chestnut trees, waterfalls and rivers. The tranquility is absolute, the town is beautiful, the inhabitants are friendly and close. The monastery hostel is a perfect place to spend a few days enjoying the valley, the person who runs it is very kind and pleasant, he gives you comfort and confidence from the first moment, the hostel is very beautiful, the rooms are spacious and very comfortable , very comfortable beds for a good rest after a walk with beautiful views of the monastery itself and the surroundings, the facilities are perfect, no detail is missing to have everything you may need, it has a very good kitchen with everything you need, areas to eat, rest, read a good book with views of the monastery, free wifi, cleanliness can be described as immaculate, the comfort of the hostel in general is perfect. Its cat inhabitant is a beauty who has accompanied us these days making the stay even more beautiful, without a doubt we will return because it has not been enough for us and I would recommend the place without thinking, both the valley, the monastery and the hostel, it is a place to return without thinking about it. On a personal note, I can only say that thank you both very much for everything, we have felt very comfortable and we will return and recommend the hostel to all our acquaintances as it has been a great experience that is worth enjoying. We have only been there for a few days and we have been so comfortable that time has flown by, spending a few days in a place with so much history sleeping in the restored rooms of the old monastery, where tranquility fills everything and waking up with the chestnut trees in flower in front of the window in the great mountains is a pleasure for the senses, and in an environment with so much to know and full of natural beauty it is undoubtedly worth repeating. We did not have time to see the projection of the history of the monastery because we wanted to cover as much of the mountains as we could during these days, but we loved the free tour, and on future visits we will be delighted to learn even more about the history of the monastery. Thank you for making us feel so comfortable and until next time. (Original) Un lugar maravilloso.

I recognize my ignorance and lack of knowledge on my part of everything that, historically and culturally speaking, the Kingdom of León contains. I promise from now on to gradually resolve this lack of attention in this magical land and the treasures it houses, both landscape and cultural. I know I have a long way to go so let's get to work and let's go quickly This personal and inspiring reflection has been the product of this unexpected visit thanks to the invitation of some friends. It has been a weekend full of surprises and although the days invited reflection and contemplation behind the glass, the magic of the place remained in the surroundings. I promise to return soon and calmly explore every corner of this special place. In its best moments it must have been impressive because of the number of rooms and how they connected. Curious about the eel pond. Its arches built from stone slabs stand out. It's a shame that not a trace remains of its Visigothic past.

Welcoming beautiful small church in Ponferrada old town. The lady stamped on my credentiale and had a good conversation re camino, 200km fr ponferrada.
Beautiful baroque church rebuilt over a medieval base. The very top of the tower that contains bells was built more recently.
(Translated by Google) Located at the foot of the Castle, it is a temple of great significance for the Old Town. Although of medieval origin, the current temple is baroque from the end of the 17th century. It has a nave with a Latin cross plan, a dome on pendentives in the transept and a square tower with three sections. The last body of the tower, where the bells are housed, is of more recent construction. Inside there is the main baroque-style altarpiece, the work of José Ovalle and Andrés de Benavente, and the Christ of the Fortress, brought there from the castle chapel. In this Church there are also some of the most famous steps of Holy Week.

It has a Latin cross layout, a single nave, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Inside, the Baroque altarpiece stands out. For years, this church housed the Christ of the Fortress or of the Wonders, a Romanesque-style Christ from the Templar Castle. It is currently on display in the Basilica of La Encina and is striking for being a crowned Christ with only three nails. (septiembre 2025)

Good selection of shops, Santander bank and a post office. The car park is free of charge. The bathrooms are very well maintained.
The stores are not bad but don't waste your time on another shopping centre. Better go support small businesses on the town.
Very nice and complete shopping centre. Highly recommended, not only for their shops, but also because of their hair saloons and grocery stores.
Hola~ I'm a peregrinos. Can I get a C-type USB cable in your shop?
