It was on our route so popped in. Nice condition. A few other things to see here. The aqueduct built in to the houses (Houses built into the aqueduct more like). Roman temple ruins, cathedral etc.
Small, wel preserved castle. Free entrance. €2 fee for entrance to the tower. Stuning view, and free toilets. Be aware it closes between 12:30 and 14:00
A fascinating medieval castle with lots of history and great views from the top of the tower. Only €2 entry.
Proper castle that. And free to go round, except the tower which is just €2. The art exhibition is small but worth a free look around as well.
cool place to visit, the tower cost 2 euro and have a really nice view. Highest point in the town.
Beautiful castle. You can visit the tower. It cost 2€. Students pay 1,50 and a family ticket is 4 € for 4 persons. A great view from the top of the tower. There is a garden around the castle. Inside, there is also a museum.
Beja Castle is a remarkable slice of Portuguese history, beautifully preserved in the Alentejo region. The castle dates back to the 13th century, with a unique mix of architectural styles that reflect its long and varied past. The towering keep, which is one of the tallest in Portugal, offers stunning panoramic views over Beja and the scenic Alentejo plains—it’s absolutely worth the climb! Exploring the inner courtyard, walls, and towers feels like stepping back in time, and there are informative plaques throughout to give context to the castle’s role in the region’s defense. The surrounding gardens add to the charm, making it a peaceful spot to relax and take in the view. This is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, architecture, or photography. Beja Castle combines historical depth with beautiful scenery and is an ideal destination for a memorable day out in Alentejo!
It's an amazing place to visit. I was able to experience what it was like to live in Beja 700 years ago. There are many plagues with explanations of the evolution of the castle as warfare tactics changed over the centuries. The tower is breathtaking.

Beautiful snack-size museum. Sadly partially under construction (so soon to be even better 😉) but despite that worth stepping in.
Very well kept building with much art and sculpture inside. Entry is very cheap.
Art for art lovers . Baja have it around just walk and you will find
Very well situated and has food places near it.
The old church here has an impressive interior, but the rest of the exhibits in the museum tend to be dark and gloomy. None of the information boards have English translations, so much of the explanatory information is lost to non-Portuguese speakers. That said, the entrance fee is very cheap and includes the entrance to another museum.
A beautiful and interesting place to visit - the sad but romantic story of Sister Mariana whose love letters to a French young man named Noel Barton, Chamilly's Marquis were discovered after her death. These letters were world renowned. The church is very intricately carved with much gold leaf used. I enjoyed an excellent salad to finish off the day .
A small regional museum housed in an old convent of Our Lady of the Conception. It is worth a visit, especially if you like late Gotic and Baroque architecture as well as tiles - there are beautiful azulejos everywhere, both blue and white (sometimes also yellow) in the Baroque style and also some late Gothic Moorish looking azulejos. Housing a beautiful marble head of Julius Caesar as well, one of the few made when he was still alive. Friendly staff and hopefully they'll be able to make renovations of the building soon enough, the place deserves some decent care and restoration.
Convent is actually a Pousada Hotel. But you can explore the convent's massive rooms by just walking in. Lovely calm impressive building. Good as a hotel too with good swimming pool.

Type: Museum Time spent: 10-15 min Price: Free Car/Bike Parking: not available A small museum with exhibits of the pre-historical, Roman, and medieval times. The most interesting part is the glass floor, which allows you to see the ruins located under the modern building.
A one large room display museum built over town ruins, principally some roman baths associated with a villa. I enjoyed our visit but leave 15 minutes extra for the curator to turn up after his lunch. Leaflets are now in English and other languages also😊
Free entry and very interesting. Huge glass floor over archaeological remains so you float above them. Limited English information on exhibits and you are provided with shoe covers.
Small archeological site allowing you to see the archeology through floor glass. Free.
If you receive people in a museum, you should be at least quiet, if you don't want to be polite. The employee who received me today around 5 PM was neither.
Beautiful modern building. It has some great ruins under the glass floors. It's filled with explainatory boards, but in Portuguese only. It's free though!
Very interesting and well organised. But no Englisch Translation..

This place is amazing. Don't miss it. Essentially a farmer stumbled onto these ruins while doing their job since then a bunch of excavation has been done. This is the ruins of an ancient Roman house and their private baths. They had a furnace that heated water and transferred it into a pool. They also had a large cool pool too. You can see all of this and more for an entry fee of 3 euros. There are even colorful mosaics still visible throughout the property (some are more than 2000 years old). The visitor's center is also nice and staffed with a really nice woman.
Villa Romana de Pisões Type: historical ruins Time spent: 20 min Price: changeable Car Parking: available, free, 3-4 max 1/It is extremely hard to get there. In case of a car - N18 [3 km] + off roads [almost 3 km], in case of a bike - Beja - City Park - Beach Cinco Reis - Ruins. Most of the road is a path in the field. If you like your car, think about it. 2/I was told to pay 3 EUR after a few minutes paid 6. Also, no one gave me a ticket. In Troia [Portugal], the price is 5 EUR, in Vilamoura and Estoi - 2 or 3, in Evora - free. So, you can visit them as well and compare. 3/Even as for ruins they are in bad condition. After the rainy week, they are flooded. And take into consideration, that they are small. The pictures from the ads are just taken from a specific angle.
This was quite a trek on dirt roads and when you get there parking is limited to three spaces. We were a bit wary but the custodian was excellent and passionately told us about the excavations in a mix of English and gestures that was enough to make herself understood. The remains are off a Roman rural estate and are surprisingly extensive. The museum shows various stages of excavation and then on the site you can see the baths, hypocaust, pools and a lot of mosaics. Certainly better than we expected and well worth the €3 entry fee.
Great little place. The road takes you through a farm and it seems you're in the middle of no where, but once you get there a kind lady will open the gate and explain about the ruins. It is €3 each for anyone over 12.
I tried to choose some photos that were a little different from those others. If you find your self on a gravel road surrounded by olive trees or corn you're in the right place! The site is on a big piece of land with a house attached. It seems to draw in few visitors but I admit I was there rather early in the day go complete my trip to the Algarve. The mosaics are in tact for the most part and I did what I enjoy most which was to walk the house and get a feel of the layout and placement of the structure. The bath complex was also quite nice and I'd not seem a hypocaust system so we'll in tact that I could crawl in and see the parts and bits of the structure below. I stayed a short while but it was well worth the excursion.
Interesting but l info signs etc undergoing renovations. Very helpful lady explained a great deal of the history of how it was discovered and the layout of the villa.
There's only one tarmac road to the site which can be found in the village of Santa Vitoria, turn off by the school and follow a single track road right to end of the tarmac, this is the location of the Roman villa and visitor centre. Very interesting with a near complete swimming pool and several mosaic floors. Closed on Mondays.
It's a very distant Place in thé Middle of nowhere. The mosaics suffer in open air, not covered or protected.Hard to imagine Romains been here...Now dry place without water, very hot in summer

Jardim Gago Coutinho e Sacadura Cabral is a lovely and peaceful garden in the heart of Beja. This well-maintained park is perfect for a relaxing stroll, with plenty of shaded areas, benches, and lush greenery. It’s filled with beautiful flowers, statues, and a charming fountain that add to the tranquil atmosphere. The garden is also a great spot for families, with a play area for kids, and it’s close to many local cafes, making it ideal for an afternoon break. A visit to this park is a refreshing escape and a wonderful way to enjoy Beja’s natural beauty.
It’s a beautiful garden with variety of plants and trees. Kids play area is also available and a music stage to relax. Overall worth a visit
Amazing Atmosphere. Beautiful park just next to the police station office in Beja . Good place to spend some time with friends and family . Recommended...
Pleasant gardens with many ancient trees. A quiet place to relax.
Nice place to visit, quite, beautiful and interesting. Plenty of space for kids to have fun, even though the playground is closed due Covid-19. Good place to chill, read, or simply enjoy nature in the middle of the city. Ducks will welcome you!
Amazing park so much beautiful flowers and trees
Amazing tourist attractions place
Pleasant enough as an in town garden, but a lot more gravel than grass. Maybe I'm spoilt by green UK. Massive aviary for just a dozen or so hens too. Strange. Quite a peaceful place to sit - although there was continuous piped music while we were there.

We just finished our tastings. We chose the 18€ flight. The last wine of the 5, the Grande Reserva 2017, was by far the best. The wines were alright & the tasting fee isn’t waived when you buy bottles. BUT the pours are very generous, and our server was very knowledgeable and friendly. She spoke excellent English. We liked her very much. The tasting included bread, olive oil, olives & pumpkin jam. They allowed me to bring my own gluten free bread. Although they say they are open 365 days, they were not prepared to accept guests without a reservation and they scrambled a bit to accommodate us. But in the end we really enjoyed the experience and bought several wines.
I've tried their Versátil rose wine and it's absolutely amazing. This bottle’s bursting with strawberry and raspberry vibes, crisp, elegant, and really smooth. 💯

The Vila Gale hotel offered us the tour. Our surprise was that the young guide with glasses who was there today, February 28th at 4 pm, didn't even greet us on arrival. I describe it because he didn't even tell us his name, he notifies several groups and he doesn't even tell us that the tour is going to start. It seems that he didn't like that we were the only spanish in the group. When he starts the talk in Portuguese, he doesn't tell us that he's going to give it in English as well. We left early because he is the worst guide I've ever had on a tour by far. I give 3 stars because the winery does look very nice and well kept but with staff with that attitude you can't go with the tours.

Although this cathedral is probably not as ornate as the one in Lisbon it is still definitely worth a visit. Plenty of spectacular azulejos depicting religious stories of Christ, and the stone work around the alter was particularly beautiful.
Mannerist style cathedral from the late XVI century, one of sites to take a look in town.
Spectacular tiles . Amazing collection of art and religious paraphernalia. Well worth visit.
Beautiful cloisters tiled in beautiful portuguese tiles. Whilst impressive, the building is in desperate need of some TLC. The paintings are all in poor condition. None I'd the interesting archeological exhibits have explanatory notes in English... The cover charge of 2 euro is small. Maybe it should be increased so the saving of the paintings and building can be accelerated. Worth a visit but don't expect to be in awe
Beautiful simple church that is worth visiting if you are stopping by the castle. Lots of blue tile artwork all over the walls, moat of it appears to be original.

Cosy restaurant with great service and good quality food. We had dinner at this restaurant with our two small children. The waitress took very good care of us and was very considerate. The chef came out and we discussed the local dishes, which did not disappoint. Really recommend the ‘porco preto’. Especially the cheek of the pork tasted amazing. Thanks again for the nice experience. We will surely be back!!!
Not so great. The chicken was 90% bones. Cheese and olives for starter were rubbish. On the good side, the sangria was really good and the price quite cheap.

The monument is a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture in Portugal, having been inspired by the loggias of Italian cities, such as the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. It was designed to be a butcher's shop (market), but during construction the building became so beautiful and majestic that it was transformed into a place of religious worship, "the great stone building that I ordered to be built for the slaughterhouse in the square, which God seems to have wanted as beautiful as it was poorly used for such a lowly function", said D. It was initially designed as a municipal butcher's shop (a place where meat is sold), but its beauty and refinement were so great that it was quickly considered too noble to function as a market, and the building was adapted to house the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, and then converted into a church. It was around the middle of the 16th century that Infante D. Luís (son of Dom Manuel I) ordered the construction of a magnificent building in Beja, with the aim of installing the municipal butcher's shops there. However, after construction had already begun on the space, whose design is attributed to the architect Diogo de Torralva, the duke decided to change the purpose of the new space, determining that “the large stone building that I had built for the slaughterhouse in the square, which God seems to have wanted to be as beautiful as it was poorly used for such a lowly function” should be the new church of the local Misericórdia brotherhood.

Some authors point to its construction between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, integrated into the Roman walls and corresponding to one of the entrance gates to the city, together with the other gates and walls of the then "Pax Julia". Under this gate there is still a section of the old Roman road, made with slabs of considerable dimensions.

It is believed to have been built between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, as part of the Roman walls and as one of the gateways to the city, but was demolished in the 16th century. The year 1938 is mentioned as the date of its reconstruction, with the remains that remained integrated into buildings that have since been demolished. (Translated by Google) Founded in 1259 on the initiative of D. Afonso III, King of Portugal, it is one of the oldest churches in the city of Beja and is one of the best examples of Alentejo Gothic architecture. The most surprising thing about the interior is the Tree of Jesse (the family tree of Jesus Christ), located in a side chapel. This site previously housed a Visigothic temple and a Muslim mosque. Beside the church, on the outside, is the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Clock Tower.
(Translated by Google) This is one of the oldest churches in Beja. The early Christian cathedral may have been built on the site of this temple today in Late Antiquity, which later gave rise to the city's main mosque in the Islamic era. With the definitive occupation of the city by Christians in the 13th century, the Portuguese monarchs authorised the construction of a new Christian temple to replace the mosque. All that remains of the building from this period is the Gothic structure of the transept, visible from the outside. The galilee was built at the end of the 15th century, the central body in the second half of the 16th century, and the main chapel and side chapels were remodelled at the end of the 18th century. The altar of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, designed by Manuel João da Fonseca, stands out, with a monumental Tree of Jesse.

(Translated by Google) It is located in a square of old buildings, among which the Casa da Torrinha, the old Town Hall and another Manueline building with a coat of arms stand out. There must have been a Visigothic temple and a Muslim mosque on this site before. The topographical location of a church, the fact that its patron saint was Saint Mary (since mosques were almost always consecrated in the name of the Virgin), a slight misalignment in orientation or an abnormal and unclear profusion of volumes, are sometimes sufficient clues to suggest the existence of an old mosque on that site.
