Wonderful monument, magnificent view. The ascent may be somewhat demanding, but both the site and the scenery are very well worth the effort for those with love for antiquities and with adventurous nature. If you prefer easy routes, the lower town in itself has so much to offer that you may just as well stay there and enjoy a refreshment or go shopping. The upper town, though mostly in ruins today, was among the most impregnable 'and thus safe- fortifications of the Middle Ages. Its natural defenses are insurmountable and obvious. The human touch is also decisive. Walls and ramparts were built all along the top of the rock, ensuring that the defenders would retain the advantage even if some incredibly skilled hikers made it up to the top from some unexpected route. Cisterns -along with a water collection network- were built in abundance and were maintained attentively, ensuring an ample supply of water. The city never fell by attack. An almost four year long siege forced the city to surrender in the 1250's to the crusader state of the principality of Achaea, and even in this case, under quite favorable terms. Even this mild subjugation lasted for less than a decade, as the city was given back to the Byzantines for the release of the captured Latin nobility after their disastrous defeat in the battle of Pelagonia in 1259. So, while walking along the shrubbery-strewn ruins, allow yourself to envisage the city as it was. If you can not reconstruct the walls with your mind's eye, you'll be missing much of what this magnificent place has to offer... but even then, you still have the view to enjoy, which is well worth the effort in itself.
We arrived at Hagia Sophia on a windy day with strong gusts, nevertheless, it’s worth the hardship 🤣 After admiring the interior and exterior, go beyond the church premise and surrounding as there is much more to relish following the shrubbery and overgrown passes that further lead to the walls and citadels. The vistas and beauty on top of the acropolis are truly breathtaking!
Would be great if it was opened a little earlier in the day. It hardly makes sense to trek up the mountain in the heat of the day - the only time it is open. It’s beautiful from the outside though.
The moderately challenging 30 minute hike up from the village is definitely worth the effort, rewarding you with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The restoration work on the church is impressive, making it a beautiful sight both inside and out!
Stunning views of all the castle, and beautiful inside. Worth the hike up - it gives you a unique experience! Definitely wear sturdy shoes and bring hats, sun cream and water as there is limited shade beyond the church.
This is a must see. Moderate hike to get there but the views are amazing and the history is incredible.
It’s old church from 12th century, Bizantine style. Great view from there. Free entry

Beautiful church, its history is en route with Malva (Monemvasia) and it was always a place for all the people to gather. Unfortunately it was closed so we didn’t had the chance to go inside.
I love it. Beers and relax with the outstanding view that the castle provide you. Cheap, real and romantic as I like it. The best psychologist is the mother nature. Take your boy/girl- friend and go there. Monemvasia has the power to eliminate your problem. Everybody deserve it. Let the wild nature to hug your soul and travel with the time ship as they call it. :)
It is placed in the center of the village so it is very easy to visit. Inside you can see the extra rare picture of Christ and learn the very special story of it. You should take a look of this magnificent piece of art. The building is ancient but in a very good condition so worth a visit.
What a great place to be in! It is very well kept and interesting. Here, one can think of the good old legends of Greeks rebelling here against the Turks, of the horrible and brutal siege that followed... Highly recommended!
Basilica with a cupola, three semi-circular arches to the east and a domed narthex to the west. The current architectural form is the result of alterations at various times, but the original structure probably dates from the Early Christian period (6th-7th centuries). In the 11th and 12th centuries the chapel of Aghios Ioannis was incorporated into the south side of the church. In 1539 a church official named Georgios Kougydas built buttresses onto the south wall. In 1697 the dome and narthex were added. In later centuries (18th – 20th) repairs were made and the bell tower was built on the northwest side. On several occasions, icons and other artefacts were were removed. Emperor Isaac II Angelos (1185-1195) removed the icon of the Elkomenos Christos (Christ in chains) and took it to the chapel of Archangel Michael at Sthenia, in Constantinople. In the second half of the 14th century the icon of the Crucifixion was stolen by illicit traders in antiquities and later on, was for many years exhibited at Athens’ Byzantine Museum. It was finally brought back to the Elkomenos Christos in 2011. It is considered to be one of the largest and most beautiful examples of what is known as the Palaeologian Renaissance and is of inestimable value. Today in the interior of the church are displayed post-Byzantine icons (17th-18th centuries) such as the Elkomenos Christos, the Virgin before the Cross, Aghios Ioannis Prodromos and the Birth of Christ on the altar screen, and the Lady of Pantanassa on the icon stand. The marble carvings date from the Early Christian and Byzantine periods. The marble altar screen was built in 1901 by the Tinos marble sculptor Georgios Kaparia to replace an older wood carved screen now standing in the Virgin of Myrtidiotissa.
Very beautiful and historic Greek Orthodox church. Very touching "atmosphere". Orthodox people's best choice for all ceremonies. Best choice for an Orthodox experience for everybody!

Beautiful ancient walled city with cute shops and cafes.
All other reviews seem to refer to the old town, instead of the archaeological museum itself. But here it is, the museum is not very big but it explains the rise and fall of the town, along with collections of artefacts excavated in the upper town (uphill). The lady who runs the place is warm and knowledgeable. Had a great chat with her about the town’s history and culture.
Very beautiful and cozy old small town. Definitely worth to visit!
Mmm, one room with uninteresting fairly recent pottery, lights not functioning. Not able to read anything due to lack of light. Reaction of the attendant, after asking if he could switch on the light: “problem with the lights” although a few were actually working. Maybe switch the bulbs every once in a while. Quite a deception, left after 5 minutes. Price per mintue is highest of any recently visited museum in Greece and definitely not worth it. Only good thing here was the nice temperature on this very hot day.
One of my best memory in Greece! This little town is charming. A must see in Greece!
Favorite place in Greece so far!!! You have 800 y/o ruins (& a crazy history) surrounded by blue sea and a really quaint village below to get lost in or quench your thirst. Free entry and open 24/7. Wear a hat & sturdy shoes, bring water. It's a rough trail with lots of steps up and down but the view is oh so worth it. Go straight to the top first (multiple stops for pics), walk the circular trail then reward yourself down in the village. It's about 4 miles total if you walk it all but you can alter that at will. I believe there is an inexpensive shuttle bus that will take you from the parking lot to the first gate. You will really thank yourself for going here.
Excellent! Highly recommended. I was told of amazing stories of Greek uprising against the Turks, the siege that followed, the massacres, the suffering... And then the victory, freedom, the flourishing... Life! I guess that most of the legends were false, but they definitely provide a wonderful context to this amazing place.

Domed churchbuilt during the first Turkish occupation after a miracle-working icon from the Panagia church in Chrysafa, Lacedaemonia (Mystras) was found in a well on the south side of the church, where a chapel was built. To the north stands a building called Kellia, originally a monastery. During the second Venetian occupation, the Panagia Chrysafitissa was a parish church. Celebrations are held at the church on its feast day, the day after St. Thomas’ Day (the Sunday after Easter).
The church is indifferent, but it's alley and view are great.
Simple, but beautiful church next to the sea. Inspirational!
Beautiful scenery , ideal for marriage or baptism

I had the pleasure of enjoying your rose wine at Sakkari restaurant in Monemvasia. I love it so much that now, I am looking for more. Hopefully, my friend can bring it back for me. Love to be on your vineyard tour on my next trip to Monemvasia.
Kalliopi gave us a fantastic tour at the vineyard. Her knowledge and English was fantastic. We ended up spending almost 2 hours here. Book the tour via email to get the best experience. We hope we can buy more of their wine once we are back in Italy!
We popped by on our way from Gythio to Monemvasia without a booking, and Barbara kindly gave us an informative and interesting tour and wine tasting. We loved seeing the cellar and behind the scenes of the whole wine making process. All the wines we tried were fantastic, and picked up a couple of bottles to enjoy for the rest of our Peloponnese trip. Highly recommend! Reservations can be made on their website.
Visiting Monemvasia Winery – Tsimbidis is an absolute must for anyone who loves wine, authenticity, and good energy. This family-run winery produces truly exceptional wines — every single one is premiere league quality, on par with (if not better than) much bigger vineyards. The experience itself is unforgettable. The winery is beautiful, full of art, warmth, and great vibes. The tour and tasting are not to be missed — it’s a chance to discover the philosophy, passion, and craftsmanship behind each label. The parents, their three brilliant daughters, and the whole winery team are extraordinary: welcoming, knowledgeable, and true professionals who clearly love what they do. We are wine lovers, and for us, Tsimbidis wines are the real deal. We regularly buy directly from them for our home and gatherings, but also had the honor of serving them at our wedding. The 300 White and Monemvasios Red were an absolute hit — all our guests adored them, asked questions, and wanted to know more about this gem of a winery. The labels are as elegant as the wines themselves. We couldn’t have wished for better wine on our special day. Thank you to the Tsimbidis family for sharing your passion with the world — you’ve won lifelong fans in us, and we’ll keep coming back again and again.
A very nice family business producing decent quality wines. My favourites are Monemvasia and Kydonitsa, 2 white wines coming from 2 native grape varieties that used to be extinct. The red ones were also good according to my taste. There are some photos from the old winery which we visited in 2020, now the business has moved to new premises. The winery is famous for a dessert wine called Monemvasia-Malvasia which is a very good quality wine that I highly recommend to anyone, however I have tasted similar, or even better wines of this kind elsewhere. I highly recommend it however for special occasions. The wine tasting experience has also changed and to be honest, I preferred the old one done by one of the daughters of the owner. Of course, it has now become more 'professional' and 'impersonal' if I may use this term. The girl who did the wine tasting for us had limited knowledge and experience in wine making and world wines which is normal as she was very young. Overall, I recommend a visit to this winery, you'll get to see all parts of a modern winery and taste some good wines. 4 stars, recommended.
Not far from Monemvasia Rock, 15mins driving on the main road. Great experience on wine taste with interesting tastes and good cheese aside. Beautiful environment, friendly welcome and very kind personell to share with you secrets on wines.
An absolute destination when visiting Monemvasia. A winery - symbol of fine winemaking. Great hospitality and wines!
Excellent experience! Great tour by Barbara, great wine , totally recommended ! Thank you so much !

(Translated by Google) With the establishment of the Elanides Women's Movement and the granting of the use of the primary school by the Municipality, the collection and exhibition of valuable folklore material, which comes mainly from the village itself, took shape. The collection is exclusively their own initiative and the goal is to preserve, preserve and display everything related to Traditional Life and Popular Culture. The Folklore exhibition is constantly enriched with objects that the inhabitants of the village offer, responding to the call of the women's movement to support an effort that hopes to pass on to the next generations what the previous ones bequeathed. Here the cultural significance of the place accompanies the object, so the resulting ethnographic data accurately record the historical and social development. It is obvious that the Folklore Exhibition is not a simple, in the typical sense of the term, museum space. It is a place of active Folklore and of the inside knowledge of the physiognomy and the goings-on of a traditional village. The collection will be open to the public every Saturday afternoon 15:30 - 18:30 as well as after contacting the ladies of the Women's Movement (Original) Με την ίδρυση της Κίνησης Γυναικών Βελανιδίων και την παραχώρηση της χρήσης του δημοτικού σχολείου από τον Δήμο έλαβε σάρκα και οστά η συγκέντρωση και η έκθεση πολύτιμου λαογραφικού υλικού, το οποίο προέρχεται κυρίως από το ίδιο το χωριό. Great, clean waters. Big Pebbles, so if not comfy bring shoes.
This is the only shower on the city beach. I recommend it)
Nice small beach (no sand just pebbles) there are some cafes and restaurants on the beach and a nice view !
The view from this beach is simply stunning. There is a restaurant on the beach serving delicious food too! Water is clear and warm and seeing Monemvasia is simply stunning!
Not sure why the beach got a reward. It was nice for a short stop and a quick swim. Close to the road, although without a heavy traffic, narrow, mostly gravel. There was some garbage on the beach. The sea was nice.
Clean and refreshing waters but a bit rocky, you have to be careful
Nothing special is a beach but the old town is something beautiful ..🇬🇷
