Grand 17th-century palace with sprawling manicured gardens, currently the pope's summer residence.
Slide 1 of 8
I first learned about Castel Gandolfo, the Pope’s summer residence, from Robert Ludlum’s novel The Road to Gandolfo in the early 1990s. At the time, I imagined it as a distant and sacred place that only a select few could enter. Decades later, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Pope Francis opened the Papal Palace to the public in 2016. During a trip to Rome in the midst of the pandemic, I finally had the opportunity to visit. Having watched The Two Popes shortly before, I arrived with a sense of what I might see — yet nothing prepared me for the experience. The Papal regalia, the private chambers, the artworks, and the gallery of Popes all brought centuries of Catholic history to life before my eyes. The square in front of the palace is charming, and the view over Lake Albano is breathtaking. Visitors should allow enough time to explore the gardens as well as the palace itself. Transport is straightforward — we took a car service from Rome — and while we were able to buy tickets upon arrival, it’s worth booking ahead during busy periods like the Jubilee year. It was a remarkable and memorable visit that blended history, art, and a unique glimpse into the life of the Papacy.
The Palazzo Pontificio in Rome refers to one of the grand papal palaces historically associated with the administration and ceremonial functions of the Pope. While the most famous papal residence is the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City, the Palazzo Pontificio in Rome itself typically refers to buildings that housed papal offices, residences for high-ranking clergy, or the papal nuncio (the Pope’s diplomatic representative). Architecturally, these palaces often exhibit Renaissance or Baroque styles, with imposing façades, symmetrical layouts, and richly decorated interiors. Grand staircases, frescoed ceilings, and ornate halls convey the authority and prestige of the papacy, while chapels and private apartments within the palaces reflect both the spiritual and residential functions of these buildings. Marble columns, intricate stuccos, and classical motifs such as pilasters and pediments emphasize their connection to Roman grandeur and ecclesiastical tradition. Historically, the Palazzo Pontificio in Rome served as a hub for papal administration, including the management of Church affairs, diplomatic correspondence, and reception of dignitaries. It was also a center for cultural patronage: many palaces commissioned works from prominent artists, sculptors, and architects to decorate halls, chapels, and courtyards, turning them into showcases of papal power and taste. Today, the Palazzo Pontificio stands as a symbol of the temporal and spiritual authority of the papacy, reflecting centuries of papal history in the heart of Rome. Some sections may still be used for Church administration, ceremonial functions, or diplomatic purposes, while others are accessible to visitors interested in exploring the artistic and historical legacy of the Roman Catholic Church.
Our tour of the Secret Garden and Private Spaces in the Papal Palace was amazing. Our guide was personable and an engaging and enthusiastic expert on the history and institution. We purchased tickets through the official Vatican website. Arrived and departed Castel Gandolfo via Uber with no trouble. A refreshing day trip outside of Rome to experience the countryside, the Pope’s have enjoyed it too! Very generous of recent Popes to share this beautiful place with the public.
We parked on the main road in the CastelGandolfo carpark, and walked through to the main Piazza where you can gain admittance, it took about 10 minutes. You enter into the gardens and from there, up some steps into the Palace. My wife was interested in the paintings and artefacts, while I loved the pen portraits on each painting. I was amazed by how short some of their papacy's were. Some looked suited for the job, others may have had Daddy's help The views from the windows are stunning Well worth 2 hours and €10 each
The Papal Palace at Castel Gandolfo, located about 25km of Rome, has long served as the summer residence of the popes, although Francis did break with this tradition. It was built on top of the ruins of a Roman villa, belonging to Emperor Domitian, in the 17th century by Pope Urban VIII. It surrounded by the scenic Alban Hills and overlooks Lake Albano. The complex includes extensive gardens and beautifully furnished apartments that reflect centuries of papal history. In 2016, Pope Francis opened the palace and its gardens to the public as a museum, allowing visitors to explore the papal apartments, private chapel, and art collections that illustrate the daily life and legacy of the popes who once resided there. Its really worth visiting, only €12 entry and make sure you leave plenty of time to wander down to the lake too.
A nice experience, would recommend. 1 hour should be plenty and the entrance cost isn't too bad. The views from the terrace are breathtaking!
Castel Gandolfo — the Pope’s summer residence, now open to visitors. Surrounded by gardens and overlooking a volcanic lake, it offers a glimpse into centuries of papal history and breathtaking views of the Roman countryside.
I am glad I came to visit. So much Catholic Church history and I had time to soak it all in with much crowd (compared to the Vatican & Rome). I was impressed by the Popes’ interest in astronomy and the number of telescopes they have here.

This place is just beautiful with the crystal clear water and the sandy beach. I went there for a kayak trip and it was just an amazing experience. If you come here, I really recommend renting a kayak and enjoy the lake like that. The water temperature is really nice also, so after kayaking you can relax at the beach and take a swim.
Just a 30–40 min train ride from Rome, this spot is a hidden gem! A short uphill hike from the lake takes you to Castel Gandolfo, a charming village with stunning views, cozy cafés, and the beautiful Papal Palace. The lake is perfect for a peaceful walk or paddle. Great mix of nature, history, and a little adventure!
The lake is beautiful no matter where you are, whether from up high in the town of Castel Gandolfo or down by the shore itself. Getting there was quite straightforward. It took around 40 minutes to get to Castel Gandolfo by train from Roma Termini, and then we just followed Google Maps directions along the downhill road. We loved it here in late Oct 2025. the area is so tranquil and quiet. It's a completely different scene from the busy Rome city center and a wonderful escape.
Beautiful place with lots of restaurant and beaches. Paid parking is available.
It's beautiful 😍 and view is gorgeous you have to go there
Sweet volcanic lake near the popes summer house with kayaking you can do.

As for today, a big part of the building is under renovation. We saw about 28/41 rooms available normally, but it was totally worth it. Super friendly staff, and not a lot of crowds in the morning. Magnificent paintings and ceilings. The tour of the inside took us a little bit less than 2 hours, but you may spend more time there.
Fantastic building and gardens. Couldn’t find tickets for the Caravaggio exhibition, but the place was worth the visit.
Had a great time, beautiful place and wonderful artifacts. Buy tickets on advance.
Of course, the museum has many remarkable paintings and is worth a visit for its architecture and history. However, it’s absolutely unacceptable that visitors are not informed in advance when one of the museum’s main masterpieces is missing. I bought the ticket specifically to see that particular painting, Caravaggio, only to find out after visiting all the rooms that it had been sent to another exhibition, and there was no notice about it at the entrance, online, or at the ticket desk. A museum of such importance should respect its visitors enough to clearly communicate when major works are temporarily unavailable. It completely changes the experience and feels unfair to those who travel specifically for these artworks.
Total SCAM. Judith Beheading Holofernes, one of the (if not the) best Catavaggio's paintings is not in exposition. I wont here justo for that paintings, asked a guide and... Sueprise! They have lend It to a museum in Texas until 2026. Not kidding. Hasmd It been a museum in my country I would have open a formal complain and demanded a refund. Is like going to the Vatican and nos having the Sistin Chapel or going to the Prado without Apollo in the Forge of Vulcan. Hope the museums is getting payed enough for sendig Italy's greatest art pieced to other countries.
Palazzo Barberini is a great spot if you want some art and a bit of relative calm. The building is beautiful, with classic Roman baroque architecture. We came especially for the Caravaggio exhibition, which was absolutely worth it. Just keep in mind that you have to pay separately for the different exhibitions. Some reviews complain about the lighting, but honestly, we thought it was well done—Caravaggio is all about dramatic light and shadow, and the way the museum lit the paintings actually highlighted that even more. Subtle, but effective. Well done!
It's famous for its staircases one is Bernini and the other one is romini competitive architects in their time and sculptures
Wonderful museum full of fascinating history and a beautiful building to boot. We went to the Caravaggio exhibition that is on during the Jubilee year. It was a fantastic collection and well done guide in English. Prepare to queue even with your advance tickets. Takes you on a journey through the history of this Artists works. Toilets halfway through the exhibit Lovely garden to take a picnic in and run around in also.

Did kayak tour. 3 hrs. Paddled the circumference of the whole lake. It was very difficult for the last hour against the current and wind. Harder for older people that haven’t paddled regularly. I enjoyed it but really hurt the next day. Saw ducks, turtles, cormorants..
Michael was our guide and he was very knowledgeable about the history and the area. We had perfect weather and the water was amazing. What a perfect way to disconnect from a busy schedule. We would definitely recommend a day on the lake!!!
Absolutely perfect day on the water - the tour guides were amazing- ten out of ten!! Francisco and Enricco picked us up from the metro, gave really great instructions for first time kayakers or people who know what to do. The tour itself was absolutely beautiful. We swam and there was a yummy Italian surprise! Chatting with both them throughout the day was also a highlight! They clearly give a lot of care to each guest. Super thankful we ended up going with a tour with them!
This was such an amazing and beautiful way of seeing another side of Rome and learn it’s history. Our guides, David and Michael, were super awesome! You could just feel Michael’s passion for the history of the lake when he would share the stories. They both knew so much about every, “what’s that?”question. Also, pizza was delicious! Don’t be me, don’t forget your swimsuit and extra clothing. We get a chance to swim in the lake after the kayaking and I just went in my clothes 😂 Honestly, if I were to do this again, I’d just wear my swimsuit and cover up in the kayak so I could go straight to swimming. They give you time to change after and there are outdoor showers by the beach.
We had an awesome time in the Kayak guided by Andrea. He picked us up from the metro and drove us to the lake. We were given waterproof bags to put our valuables in. We then made our way into the kayak and onto the water. He explained the history of the area very well and told us really interesting facts. He even gave us water and pizza to eat on the boat. The lake was so beautiful to kayak on. Thank you so much Andrea, we really enjoyed ourselves.
This was a great experience! They rented us the kayaks and took us to this great little place to swim. The lake was beautiful and the water was perfect and so incredibly blue for a lake! Super fun thing to do to get away from the crowds in Rome and escape the heat.
Started the journey by transfer from Anagnina and were taken to the lake. The lake was beautiful and the tour with the kayaks was really fun. Francesco, Emmanuelle and Lucio were great hosts with Francesco in charge of the English speakers. Learnt a lot about the lake ( it’s actually a volcano 😱) and the things inside it 🚗. When we stopped to go swimming, we were given slices of pizza and got to enjoy the view. Would definitely recommend!
WOW!!!!! That was the best experience I have had in my trip in Italy... Stefano who was person in charge was a super nice guy who communicated very well regarding timings and meeting points. He was very kind to to give me the option of paying onsite also which made me very comfortable. Alex who was the person who received me from the metro station with his car and took me tothe spot always offering to stop by for some cappuchino and snacks and also paying for them. Alex was a sweethwart throughout the whole journey, maaking great conversation along he way and telling me about the history of places that we passed by. He was very clear in the demonstration and the instructions he gave regarding the pedalling, how to turn, how to maintain balance and also offered to give me extra socks when i thought i didnt bring any spares. He really responds to the way you want to make this experience more enjoyable... He showed me like small hidden spots along the coast of the lake and explained the history and base of the lake as we paddled through... After the whole unforgettable experience of kayaking, he also took time to take me to the Castle and showed me around. After everything was done, he brought me back to the metro station and sent me off... I thoroughy enjoyed my experience with Canoa Kayak Academy. Definitely made my trip sooooooooo much worthwhile... :D I would strongly recommed anyone who is in and around Rome to go here and try it out. It is €40/head if you are going alone and if you are more than 1 person the fee is €30/head... I went in the off season and so these were the prices... It was totally worth the €40 I paid. Definitely a MUST EXPERIENCE :)

Basillica San Tommaso da Villanova, Piazza della Libertà at Castel Gandolfo, a pure Italian atmosphere town mainly famous with Papal Gardens, located on a hill looking over Albano Lake, 30 KM south of Rome. We visited the place by train and from train stazione we had to walk uphill a zig zag lane through a forest to reach the town center (Hard & exiting 10 minutes walk - shows in one photo). Place is worth seeing. In this lovely town (Castel Gandolfo) November 2009, and according to a NASA newsletter, the Vatican hosted its first International Conference on Astrobiology, and attendant philosophical implications of finding {Alien life} elsewhere in this Universe!
Beautiful church that is open even until dinner time. We brought our family here to pray and admire the general splendour of architecture.
Very nice small square with cute places and a nice view of the lake. You will be breathless
The church is charming though a bit overwrought, but the view from the street behind the church is the best in the area.
Quick stop while in the village to admire the flooring ceiling and the artwork. Very peaceful and quiet location amongst the busy street of Castel Gandolfo. The church is located on the main tourist strip next to the tourist office and on the large plaza. There's parking available right down the road as well.
Simply splendid! A "small" Bernini triumph
Attended very peaceful Sunday Mass
Simple yet beautiful

(Translated by Google) Fantastic experience. Two truly evocative rooms. The staff knows how to get you into the atmosphere of the story, creating that mixture of fear and concentration to be able to get out of there as soon as possible. Also teasing a little the competitiveness towards other previous groups. Personally I wouldn't go with more than four to a room so as not to get in the way. And then by dividing into two groups the competition increases (if you want you can go back by doing the rooms reversed). For groups having their first experience, I recommend the horror room which has a lower difficulty. Excellent staff, ready to intervene at the slightest problem. Highly recommended!!. (Original) Esperienza fantastica. Consigliatissimo!!.
(Translated by Google) A unique place both from a scenographic point of view and from the stories that interest the games (serial killer/butcher). I had the opportunity to participate in both, experiencing a wonderful experience full of emotions and suspense. A feather in the cap goes to the ingenuity of the game for the numerous puzzles. Absolutely worth doing again to be able to finish it once and for all....💪 (Original) Un posto unico sia dal punto di vista scenografico sia dalle storie che interessano i giochi ( serial killer/ macellaio).
(Translated by Google) I had this wonderful experience together with my friends... after having tried several escape rooms including IL MACELLAIO (highly recommended, very beautiful), this escape definitely left me speechless due to the beautiful, very engaging puzzles... I must say that it is quite complicated but with group play he manages to flow everything very well!!! I had a lot of fun and congratulations also to the magnificent actor Gianluca!!! It was truly phenomenal and so much fun! What can I say guys, keep it up, you're fantastic! especially for the beautiful 100% realistic scenography!!!!! See you soon!!!! A presto!!!!
(Translated by Google) Fantastic experience. Very immersive rooms and truly well-constructed atmospheres. The puzzles are always different and ingenious. If you like escape rooms, these will definitely give you a hard time. Recommended both. "The Butcher" gives an even more immersive experience with the presence of the actor in the room. (Original) Esperienza fantastica. Stanze molto immersive e atmosfere veramente ben costruite. Gli enigmi sono sempre diversi e ingegnosi. (Translated by Google) Fantastic experience! I had been to other escape rooms before but none particularly impressed me. Although it is not a triumph of technology, there was no shortage of twists and touches of class! My group and I went for Halloween and we got a funny prank that made us crazy. The young and extremely helpful staff! We were the last group and we were delayed due to an unexpected event and they kindly waited for us! (Original) Fantastica esperienza!
(Translated by Google) Absolutely worth trying. My friends and I tackled the serial killer's room. For me it was the first Escape Room experience and it was a lot of fun. Both the story and the puzzles found in the room need to be complimented. A special compliment also goes to the game masters who very skilfully guide you through the puzzles and obstacles, making you immerse yourself 100% in the game.
(Translated by Google) Very nice Escape Room, the third I've done, and undoubtedly the most immersive despite the very small spaces. We were a group of 4 guys and we made it by the skin of our teeth, 58 minutes and a few seconds ("The Butcher"). I must say that the quality of the puzzles was very good, never predictable and placed in a fairly intuitive sequence, perhaps the padlock device was a little repetitive, but in small rooms I understand it is one of the only ways to create Chinese box puzzles. The help of the Soul is very useful, if it hadn't been for her we would have been quartered by the butcher on her return!😂 Very good guys and clear in illustrating the game dynamics. For anyone who was in doubt due to covid, I can say that all safety regulations are respected, with sanitizers at the entrance and mandatory masks.

(Translated by Google) This place positively surprised me... We went there without many expectations for a game of bowling with the children on a Saturday evening. Instead we found delicious pizza and classic hot dogs and burgers for the children. The guy who seems to run the place is very friendly and efficient. .. but I would recommend making the rest of the staff a little more involved 😉 I would also like to point out to the owners of the place to keep a little watch on the kids hanging outside because unfortunately the final evening was a bit ruined by having to pass through groups of kids all with cigarettes in their hands... One of whom got burned my son's new duvet!
(Translated by Google) Excellent for an aperitif, but also to enjoy delicious meat and sandwiches and to end the evening in style with a nice game of bowling.....they also organize parties for children, we celebrated our little girl's birthday and they had a lot of fun everyone including the parents, especially since at the end of the party all the children wanted to celebrate theirs there.

Our three kids had a wonderful experience here learning how to make mosaics with a very kind and patient instructor. If you are looking for original and memorable experiences for children in the Rome area, this one is a real winner.
We bought a beautiful Catholic pilgrimage mosaic cross here. The owner was very friendly and the packaging is also ready for transport overseas which makes it easy for international tourists. I highly recommend this place for souvenirs. 🫶🏻 Update: I am now back in my home country after our pilgrimage and the cross is perfect and did not break during transit. ❤️
full of beautiful hand made mosaics. Pictures that are very artistic, we loved the cats. Huge range and choice. Also photo frames and very individual jewelry. Prices very reasonable when you consider the cost of the materials and the amount of work and imagination that goes into them. Highly recommended.
I took my seven year old to La Musa Mosaici this morning to make her own mosaic. She completed a heart shaped piece of art with the help of the lovely ladies in the workshop and she thoroughly enjoyed it. It cost €30 and was money well spent for a unique and personal momento to take awau from Castel Gandolfo. I would highly recommend a visit here.
💕 Very nice place to try to make mosaics yourself! Positioned at the centre of charming Italian town. Owner was friendly & answered all questions. I recommend 👍

(Translated by Google) I gave it one star but from the experience I've had it's too much. I bought some earrings for €90, the time I wore them they practically broke in my hands, I'm taking them for repairs and the owner made a fuss about me, casting doubt on my version of events, (in short, calling me a liar ). Ok, the earrings are repaired but when I go to collect them I see that the material is really poor quality, he sold me silver, dipped in gold, when in reality it has the resistance of tin, it is unacceptable that I pay €90 for a product and I can't use them at my pleasure, if I ever manage to use them, terrible experience and poor courtesy (Original) Ho messo una stellina ma dall'esperienza che ho avuto è anche troppo.

My family and I have enjoyed our stay here, friendly staff, very clean. You can purchase some basic snacks, ice cream and coffee on site. Pedal boats are available for hire.
Favourite little splashing spot by the lago. Bit squelchy when you get in the water but that might be a turn on for some. The water is very warm so you won't get caught out for taking a little light relief...
great beach access, overall clean and safe feel
Located at the Albano lake at Castel Gandolfo. Nice water. With train 45 min from Rome. Very good alternative for the beach.
Thank you for everythink Francheska

(Translated by Google) We have been there twice with my husband. The meat is very good, definitely the strong point of the place. They also have a nice cellar, a room with wines, it creates atmosphere. Maybe a little expensive for the area, but overall the food is good. A restaurant where you gladly return every now and then. Cutiest little restaurant! This spot over looks a lake in the middle of a crater. They are known for their sheep’s milk cheeses but everything we had was incredible. Highly recommend the ricotta cheese with walnuts and honey. Soooo creamy! And the perfect balance of salty sweet on a piece of bread. The bull testicles were an amazing experience, too!
What a great little find this was. Decided to take a short (and cheap!) train ride out of Rome for the evening and happened upon Arte e Vino in Castel Gandolfo. Well worth a visit to the village for the views of the lake (the zig-zag path from the station is steep but worth it) but then to find this place too was unexpected. The food was good and at a good price, staff were friendly and helpful and the restaurant is so quirky. If you’re in Rome, take a trip out here for a couple of hours, you won’t be disappointed (oh the Pope spends his summer out here)
Me and my friend had a great time here. We got the chance to hear the owner's brother - Luca - introduced each room in this restaurant. Each room has their own theme, which is very special!! The food, the wine, and the coffee was great. The atmosphere is very nice. The staff is super friendly just like the restaurant's owner.
For asians you can visit this place without any doubts. For me it’s become the best experience of this trip. In Europe you can barely find any place give you beyond expect experience with great foods and drinks. At first I came here to visit Pope’s sightseeing but ended up with this restaurant and cannot go anywhere with five glasses of wine. Beyond services, great food, superb wine, nice atmosphere. Thank you once again to made my day. If you came here for one day trip please don’t mis this restaurant they can change your journey.
Amazingly good food and brilliant wine. Tried the pumpkin and nuts pasta, was one of the best pasta I had recently. It is a hidden gem in this area. It is located in the street not overlooking the lake. If you need the view, this is not the place. But for genuinely good food, try it
Absolutely perfect experience. Food was absolutely perfect service was great. Really cool spot. If you are sitting outside be sure to ask for the tour . They have converted old WWII bunkers into dining spaces . It’s like a museum down there. 10/5 if I could . We did get a little crazy with ordering so our bill was bit high but considering how much we ordered it was very inexpensive .
The first restaurant we eat in that has underground caves and tunnels that takes you to the other side of the road! Food was good and the service was great 👍🏻 when the owner knew that we are staying at Mimmo place we received a bag of cookies 🍪 the best I ever tasted!
If you can wait for the meal about 30-60 minutes then it is ok. We got cold Lasagne, and little warm Porchetta. But the Cinghiale was very good.
