Our third visit to The Lost Valley and each time I learn more and marvel further at Gerard Bourke’s passion for his home area and his unparalleled historical knowledge of the tragedies which unfolded there and across the rest of Ireland in the 19th Century. I also very much appreciate the way he takes a broad perspective and relates what occurred in Ireland to events in many other oppressed nations then, and today. Looking forward to the fourth visit!
This a spectacular place, you will be so glad to have experienced it, make it a must do. The depth of information, background and context is amazing. This is a place deeply personal to the Burke’s but the story applies across mayo and indeed Ireland. This gives the people of past generations a chance for their stories to be spoken. Get to this, you won’t regret it.
Excellent tour fascinating place. Guide possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of the area that is rooted in his own family history. Quite balanced and fair. Grants a unique perspective on a time and place in history. Good 3 hours hillwalking taking in breathtaking scenery. Definitely worthwhile. A must see
Outstanding! This is one of the most thought-provoking, authentic experiences we've had. Using family generational knowledge of the area and events, Gerard brings the landscape to life! Keep doing what you are, brilliant. Take your waterproofs, but don't dip out because of rain. Just do it
Outstanding place to visit. A wealth of history and local knowledge in a stunning location. Gerard is a mine of information, with great charm and excellent delivery skills.
What an amazing beach and completely deserted. Tide was out so we could walk the whole beach. Such a beautiful place.
One of the most beautiful places I've ever been & I've been around.
Made a special detour just to visit this place, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of this trip: an amazing, enriching, warm, insightful, moving, beautiful tour. All of this in a stunning location, and the host was simply outstanding. Do yourself a favour: book online in advance and enjoy what will surely be one of the most memorable experiences in Ireland.

I loved my entire trip to Ireland but this may have been the best part. We had a sheepherding demonstration and a delicious meal with music. Run by a lovely family. Go! You won't be disappointed. ❤️
Wonderful, wonderful experience with the warmest, friendliest people you can imagine, great to see how the dogs operate and are trained, and topped off with lovely tea and scones. Couldn’t ask for a better experience’
Awesome experience. The family and Michael were so hospitable. Great demonstrations. Truly enjoyed the coffee and scones. Their own Irish Creme is the best I have ever tasted. Wish we could buy it in the US.
Had a great experience at the Glen Keen Farm. The talk about the bog and peatmoss was very interesting. Watching the dog and his human interaction was quite fascinating. They served us a great lunch, and the entrainment was fun.
Awesome border collie (Janice) working the ram sheep...fun to watch what she can do with whistle commands. Gift shop had good variety of items and they shared sips of irish cream liquor. Very generous and welcoming on all fronts.
This is an eye opener in Eco and Agri Tourism as we witnessed how they harvest Peat land and how they contribute to the entire Eco system with dedicated hard work. We met Jim, son and daughter, Mr An Neantog and his loyal sheep dog Jane, but the co- owner Jim's wife Catherine was away in Shanghai whom an Eco/ Agri Tourism Award recipient. Had lunch, freshly baked scones and their own Irish Coffee with whiskey and cream served by wonderful, friendly staff with a smile on face always. How Mr An Neantog harvesting the peat was amazing with careful consideration of the future generations. His loyal sheep dog Jane is always by his side for the command. We were very fortunate with the weather to see how Jane was rounding up sheep and keep them on their toes for Jane's next reaction. This is a huge 1600-acre farm plus another over 5000-acre common land adjoining the farm. We respect their dedication towards our Nature and Eco Habitat.
Beautiful spot to stop in at, great food and the best scones. The family/staff are all so very sweet and welcoming! The sheep dog demonstration is captivating and such a unique thing to experience.
This was my favorite experience in Ireland. The farm was so warm & inviting. We enjoyed a wonderfully informative & entertaining sheep dog herding demonstration, got lots of pets in w/ the pups when they weren't working and enjoyed a delicious intimate dinner in a beautiful candle lit setting w/ live music. I would go out of my way to come back here again.

I visited here with my sister, I was here for the weekend and we booked onto this. From start to finish this experience was unreal. We had the best weather this year so got very lucky. Muirti and Catherine where amazing, made us feel at ease and where great teachers. They where always there if you needed help, and if not just to have a good laugh. They also took photos for us on the water and sent us them later....10/10! If you're contemplating this...just do it!!! Can't wait to return for more sup fun x
Had an amazing morning on the water. Did a lesson September 2024 with Catherine. The water safety instruction and guidance in how to get on and off the board left me confident to get out on the water. I felt totally safe and in control of the board the entire time I was on the water. Went back in May for my second time out on the board. I was delighted to find I remembered the skills I learned and glided along the water. It's great to have the piece of mind knowing the SUP team are watching the area. Everything is so well organised and easy to get set up, it's so handy to be able to hire everything 👌 Will definitely be back 😁
Just recently took a trip to Westport for a Hen Party and we tried out SUP on the Sunday to clear the heads. What an amazing activity, although it seems so simple, we had such a good time! Catherine and Connor went above and beyond to accommodate us out on the water. They made sure we had a good time and were even our personal photographers so we didn't have to risk dropping our phones. Would highly recommend for all ages! Top Class!!
Couldn’t recommend this place enough ! Organised stand up paddle boarding for a stag activity and they were absolutely excellent ! Catherine and the 2 Conor’s were great craic and made sure we all had a great time. Not to mention the views of Croagh Patrick from the water were unbelievable! Will definitely be back again.
We did a kayaking session with Catherine as a group of 10 with a range of ages and needs. Excellent activity for families with a mix of double and single kayaks. Easy to spin in and out when the smaller ones wanted a break (they could play on the beach). Very reasonably priced. Catherine was very easy going and looked after us really well- sent on lovely photos she'd taken. Simple to book ( a phoncall and text to confirm), excellent advice on the phone about what would suit our group best. Would definitely recommend.
we had the most amazing time on the kayaks, Catherine was so lovely and accommodating to us and made us feel at ease - wouldn’t recommend an activity more than this!!!
Had an amazing time kayaking with Catherine on Sunday. There was 11 of us including my five nieces and nephews, and Catherine ensured everyone was safe and having fun! We would highly recommend!!
Had a great experience with Catherine and the two Conors. Highly recommend for anyone regardless of ability. Scenery is unparalleled as well!

Surf Mayo – Simply the Best Surf School in Ireland!! I’ve had the chance to try three different surf schools across Ireland, while each School had something great to offer, Surf Mayo truly stood out above the rest. From the moment I arrived, the experience was beyond amazing. The instruction was clear, personal, and incredibly effective — I saw improvement in my surfing after just a few minutes of coaching. What impressed me even more is that I had only paid to rent a board, yet the instructor still came out, offered pointers, and genuinely cared about helping me progress. He didn’t have to do that, but he did — just out of passion and kindness. To top it off, I accidentally broke one of their board leashes, and they weren’t even going to charge me for it — That kind of honesty and generosity is rare. These are real, down-to-earth, genuine people. Welcoming, helpful, straightforward, and kind — exactly the kind of energy you want when you’re learning something as exciting (and humbling) as surfing. I’m so grateful for the experience. Thank you, Surf Mayo — from the bottom of my heart! I can’t wait to come back.
I had an amazing experience this week with Surf Mayo - I was over visiting my parents so booked up a 2 hour adult lesson (which was a great deal!) for Monday. Charles and Elvis were very welcoming and really organised for getting checked in and set up with gear. The instructor was great - we did some practical stuff on land then had plenty of time in the water catching waves. I enjoyed it so much I booked up to come back for another lesson on Wednesday! I had the same instructor and we picked up right where I left off and made good progress! All in all a great local business with lovely people, and I'm already planning my next trip over so I can get back in the water there!
Absolutely amazing experience! My friend and I took a lesson at Surf Mayo and it was truly unforgettable. Elvis and Charles were extremely professional and friendly, and the whole atmosphere was incredibly welcoming. Thanks to Elvis we absolutely fell in love with surfing. This is the kind of place you just want to come back to again and again. Highly recommended!
Absolutely amazing service! The lads at Surf Mayo really know how to look after everyone, and do so with such kindness. I’ve rented gear from the guys over the summer months since 2020 and I love bringing friends and family to experience the beauty of surfing at Carrowniskey. I brought my cousins from France last weekend and Charles and Elvis made sure we had the right gear for our ability so that we could have the most fun in the water, and advised us how to stay safe. The wetsuits kept us warm and the whole family had one of the best days out in a long time!
Spent a couple of weeks surfing and hiking in Ireland this summer and Surf Mayo was an absolute highlight! The owner , Charles, is skilled, relaxed and extremely nice. The school is located on this beautiful beach and the surf is consistent and fun. There is also great nature in the area. I would love to go back and I really recommend it to everyone else.
We had a wonderful experience with Surf Mayo, and it was an absolute thrill to see the whole of our family take to surfing so quickly. Moreover, everyone had an incredible amount of fun. Charles and the team were attentive and helpful. The instruction was superb, and catered to each individual. We're still talking about the Surf Mayo experience, and eager for the next time we'll have the chance to visit.
We sent our 3 boys (aged 10, 12, and 14) to a week-long surf camp, and we honestly can’t rate Charles, Elvis, and the team highly enough. You can see straight away that safety is their top priority, and their communication was fantastic – always keeping us updated if there were any changes to weather conditions or plans. The lads had an absolute blast, came home every day buzzing, and are already looking forward to many more days out catching waves!
This was an excursion we looked forward to and it was more than worth it. They created a really nice and safe atmosphere. They had good and clear instructions, it was helpful and it wasn’t too long. They made you feel confident and positive. Also the price was really good. Sadly this was our last day here but we would totally come back for sure.

Good cozy spot, staff are spot on and the bar seems popular enough. Glass of wine will set you back about 6 euro. The kitchen wasn't open when we arrived (after 22;00 so fair enough) and the staff seem nice enough and professional. GAA matches are shown (especially when Mayo are playing!).
Probably one of my most favourite pubs, cosy atmosphere and welcoming, great pint too.
Unfortuntaly, the pub is affected by the pandemic like everyone else right now. But I urge you to check their 30 minutes video session with wonderful "Tunes from a lonely Pub" recorded last September on their website. Dear An Bhun Abhainn people: Thank you so much indeed. Keep up your great spirit and your great work. Hopefully will see you in September this year.
Excellent pub. Lovely decor. Very clean and great staff. Well done!
Great Guinness, lovely decor inside and out. Good space in beer garden, staff very friendly and Guinness is always perfect
Just a lovely pub, first impressions are great, so inviting and very clean, staff are so professional, and Mossie is a gent, will definitely be back asap 🤗🥂
One of two pubs in the heart of Louisbrough, newly decorated on the inside and looks very good, also has very good Guinness
much nicer than it used to be as it's seated at tables so.more comfortable. also they have upgraded the toilets which is a plus

The most beautiful beach in Ireland I have seen so far. There are a few with that are highly ranked in the area but further about those, that's the one to go to...I am even reluctant to put a review about it to keep it more of a local secret and avoid too many tourists ;-) The road to the beach is narrow and so beautiful. There is a car park at the end. There were a few surfers parked there but no-one surfing. The beach is very long and wide with this perfect white sand. The water can get a tropical blue colour although it is very fresh ;-) The dunes are majestic. The place is surrounded by very green grass perfectly mawed by the many cute sheep all around. Sheep are even adventuring themselves on some isolated piece of land that is only connected to the beach by a few rocks. Truly a great place where you can walk, relax, and have fun for quite a while.
Beautiful beach with a nice hike up the green fields surrounded with sheep.
Best avoided, there is nothing here, no hotels and apartments overlooking the beach, no shops, no venders, no litter even. Just white sand, waves, a little seaweed and a view of the Atlantic ocean and the nearby islands. The road down is a bit of an adventure but with common sense and courtesy, everyone will get by. If you catch it near low tide (the best time), then there's a short walk from the carpark to the beach to finally remove you from almost all other signs of civilisation. Note that there is currently (2025) no lifeguard service here but it all felt very safe. One upside, there is a large rock in the middle of the beach which is really great for leaving your stuff on while swimming. Please leave this beach as you found it, hopefully pristine.
Stunning location, super clean, plentiful parking, and public loo available. There's vast dunes to explore and great views of the mountains and surrounding countryside. We camped here and it was perfect. Lots of other people camping but everyone is well spread out. I'd encourage everyone to he respectful of this beautiful place and take your rubbish home.
Beautiful place to wild camp and enjoy the beach. Public toilets available at the car park.
Beautiful beach. Seems to never have a crowd (other reviewers say this too) and I don’t know why. The water is beautiful. You can actually see small shoals of tiny fish near the shore on a warm day. We walked among them. Never seen the likes on any other beach in Ireland. Would happily return here.
One of my top 5 favourite beaches in Ireland. Breathtaking views, beautiful dunes, long sandy beach, mountains to climb nearby and amazing long walk to White Strand. Expected to be crowded, but it was very quiet (apart from a very noisy quad lover riding on the beach). Big enough carpark right beside the beach.
It was so so windy when we visited, we could barely walk on the sand. Great parking area. But it seemed a longer drive down to it than we'd expected. We'd also lost the signs for the Wild Atlantic Way !!! There's a little bridge for access onto the beach, but it was flooded ... lovely and desolate.

Beautiful little shop to browse for books and sit with a coffee and a cake. They even have an upstairs with second hand books. Very cute spot
wonderful little book store with a phantasic assortment. Used and new books, greeting cards and little things to remind you of your holidays, without being tacky or overloaded. Basically the stellar opposite of a chain bookstore. Very welcoming book enthusiasts at the counter. I go there every time I'm around, without fail.
Lovely little spot Delightful selection of books, tasty coffee and a few treats Great place to sit and have a chat (tables and chairs out the back)
Wonderful bookshop in village of Louisburgh, Co. Mayo run by the fabulous Lisa. Lots of community events, workshops, children's story-telling, exhibitions of talented Irish artists, beautiful Irish gifts, limited edition prints. A real treasure trove. Love visiting there.
A browsing gem in this village! A great selection of stock for tempting bookworms! Lovely cards and other small gift items as well. Impressed with the super community and local school links and activities to promote youth reading.
Such a lovely book shop, love to visit! Very friendly and such a good selection of books!
Fantastic book shop. Had a great chat with the friendly owner and was then invited to a free event being held there later in the day. Saw three great poets and enjoyed some live traditional music. Will definitely visit again when I'm next in the area.
Best thing to visit in town! Great selection of local and unique books. Staff is very knowledgeable and ready to help you find your new favourite book!

A beautiful monument commemorating such a devastating time in Irish history
It commemorates the Great Irish Famine which occurred between 1845 - 1849. The memorial is located in Murrisk Millennium Park, across the road from the Croagh Patrick Visitor Center parking lot. It is free to visit and contains very interesting and stark imagery.
A very special and moving place, a haunting monument indeed.
Really impressive, moving and haunting sculpture.
Monument didn't really tell you too much apart from it's in aid of the famine. You only need 5 minutes but don't park in the car park over the road as waste of money for 5 minute view. Park down by the abbey which is down the side road, free parking and actually more interesting to see the abbey.
Amazing monument.
Beautiful work of art , the sculpture really sends you into the history of the genocide/famine of our ancestors. Haunting reminder of our struggles and past . 🇮🇪💚☘️ a lovely place to sit and take in the view of the sea while being in a peaceful environment.

Amazing beach between Silver Strand and Killary Harbour. Awkward to get to but well worth the effort. Respect landowner rights... but don't believe any propaganda or deflection you may come across... there is no such thing as a private beach in Ireland!
So unjust and such and shame and that land owners are restricting public access to government owned foreshore. They claim it is part of lost valley but it's not, they have blocked off the coastline access to this beautiful beach. Not only that but they aren't caring for it. They are damaging the area of natural beauty by adding concrete posts and fencing that animals can get trapped and hurt in. There were also large barrels of god knows what dumped on shore. Certainly the sign they posted is false! Something should be done about the situation. They are clearly just greedy and trying to make access to the beach exclusive to people that pay €25 per adult for a tour of their land.
Unacceptable Restriction of Access to Public Natural Areas It is deeply concerning that a property owner is preventing access to a public natural area. Regardless of the location, there must be free access to public zones. Denying access effectively privatizes the area, which is completely unacceptable. While I have no issue with anyone wanting to build a business around their farm, denying taxpayers access to a public area is simply unjustifiable. The argument that your family has lived there for a long time holds no weight. Neither you nor I were there in the past, and it should not influence decisions about public access today. The growing demand from people to access natural spaces must be recognized by the authorities. What was true in the past is no longer relevant. Today, the need for nature and public spaces is more pressing than ever. It is imperative that the authorities take action to ensure that public natural areas remain accessible to everyone. Blocking access not only goes against the principles of public rights but also ignores the evolving needs and desires of the community.
The propietary was so impolite. We wanted to visit Uggool beach, and the road seemed to be closed. There where some letters, signals, fences and a cctv camera to forbide the pass. Suddenly, this landowner appeared and after asking him if we could visit the beach, he told us to pay 25€ for his guided farm visit. Finally, we turn around with the car. It's a shame that people want to do busines in public spaces. Nature *must* be for everybody.
Country national treasure stolen from public by greedy local family to generate extra cash. No access given to coast line which is in breach of many regulations. Justice will always prevail.
The scandal of aggressively blocked access by a local smallholder to this public beach continues. When will Mayo Council take action to put a stop to this? An embarrassment to Mayo and Ireland.
This beach is rated as hazardous. Its dangerous to go to and is on Private farmland.
Lovely beach, unfortunately only accessible from the sea. A great stop on your kayaking trip around the Killary Harbour.

Lovely clean beach. Bathrooms on site too. Very narrow and bendy road just before beach so approach slowly as families live near and kids might be walking.
What a Jem, great beach with majestic surroundings. Overlooked by Croac Patrick with Clare Island in the distance. Commercialised place, lots of free parking, picnic benches on beach with a complimentary toy box area for children. Located ten minutes from Westport it's an idea spot to walk, swim, or just relax & take it all in.
A fantastic sheltered beech 20mins from Westport. Easy enough access road with a very ample car park and decent public toilets (at the rear of the car park). There is a coffee shop near by (walking distance). Beech itself is sandy and shielded to the rear. There’s a fine pier and a couple of very pretty smaller beeches adjacent. Ideal spot for paddle boarding or sea kayaking (there is a surf rental shop in the car park) but no waves for surfing on the day I was there. All in all great for kids and good services.
a very beautiful beach, a lot of space, there are picnic tables, dachas, as well as tuplets and in them everything you need to take care of hygiene)✨
Fantastic beach ,great activities Sup Boarding was wonderful way to view the bay most enjoyable. Great way to meet new people. Only down fall is the public Toilets are filthy not fit for use .
Scenic, clean beach, with nice golden sand, shallow enough water to your waist for a good distance. View of Croagh Patrick. Busy enough even in cold weather. Water sports school with paddle boarding and kayaking. Pier jumping. Large free car park, cafe and public toilets.
What a lovely beach. July 2018, 28 degrees in the shade. Beautiful. Overlooked by Croagh Patrick, is there a holier beach in Ireland? This place should be at least a class 2 relic and renamed a place of worship. Shallow warm water, I could've swore I was in the Seychelles. Only thing missing was a bar. BYOB. If you're around westport it's the best beach by far.
Big sea wave, rocky beach, toilet, lots of water activities( snorkelling, paddle boarding, swimming, diving?, fishing?) campervan or any vehicle higher than 1.9m need to park somewhere else than the car park provided.

Cosy pub with lovely big open fireplace. Great pints to be had and they show most sport as well.
Pub has closed and is to be 'developed' into tourist apartments. Like many small towns in the west of Ireland, Louisburgh is threatened with overdevelopment, the slapping down of tarmac in road schemes, and lack of control of second homes. Shops and pubs cater more and more to tourists/second homers, and less and less to those who live here. Pressure is building from vested interests for road widening to spread suburbanization from Westport along with a dedicate bicycle lane that will take bikes off the road and enable motorists to drive even faster.
stopped briefly on way to ferry to Inishturk - good chowder & mussels, friendly staff

Great little supermarket. Has everything. Cash dispenser, deli, off licence, and more. Friendly staff and great service. The home cooked ham from the deli is super delicious. Highly recommend this store when in Louisburgh.
Says on google closes at 9, for some reason on this fine Saturday it decided to close at 8:20, I am snackless for the evening. Thanks gala
Good place but closes at 8:20 earlier than google says
incredible expensive a chicken roll is above 6 euros and nothing is in it just butter and chicken ,some workers are kinda rude and managers doesn't speak english properly.
Fairly well stocked considering its very rural, West of Ireland location, and not that expensive. Friendly staff.
Had a curry here watched the rugby so friendly and caring staff atmosphere great no louts in Irish pubs
